Konoha ANBU base/Training Area 3
Sarutobi Konohamaru had a new assignment."Kakashi's got the file," Shikamaru said, bored. "Go find him down in their team training area.""Kakashi?" Konohamaru frowned, packing away his other files. "Why Kakashi?""Your protection details overlap.""What, Kakashi is going to pretend to be a transfer student to KU?" he snickered. "You know the 'non-traditional' kind? No – wait! He's going to be the lazy pervy proff isn't he?"Shikamaru gave less than half a shrug."Kakashi will tell you all the details.""Yeah, I bet," he zipped up his bag and tossed it over his shoulder. "You been to see Shōgi this week?""I've not been by since I got in from the Land of Iron.""Oh yeah," he said innocently. "That's right. So. How is Temari?""Fine. If you want to ask her yourself, I'm sure she'll be by soon.""Nah. Busting your ass about her isn't the same as hanging around to have her bust my ass. Later, Shikamaru."He heard the trademark 'troublesome,' as he left the office and hopped a shuttle to the ANBU training areas. Tired of the constant call for repair to the training facilities, Tsunade had a team of ANBU engineers designate and design one training area able to withstand Naruto and Sasuke's attacks; specifically against each other.Konohamaru walked in just in time to see Naruto climb out of a Naruto-sized crater in the wall."Whoa," he breathed, watching the melee of Narutos and Sasukes move like lightning. "What set them off this time?"Kakashi shrugged airily. "Did Shikamaru give you any details about your assignment?"He dragged his eyes away from the spectacle ahead of him, wincing when Naruto bounced Sasuke off of the floor before dodging the Uchiha's fireball. "Sort of," he took the file from Kakashi's outstretched hand. "I'm supposed to pick up a bodyguard detail over at Konoha U. Oh, wait, no way," his eyes went wide. "You want me to guard her?!"Kakashi still didn't look at him. "Problem?""Oh, no, not at all," Konohamaru grimaced as he flipped through the file. "Just looking after the Hyūga heir, and probably having to sign up for all of the same classes mid semester – none of which are even remotely close to my major, by the way – AND I have to somehow watch over this chick who talks to no one, and always has one of those creepy-white-eyed clansmen of hers hanging around. Should be a frickin' cakewalk.""Good to hear," Kakashi turned his head to the right to dodge an electrified kunai. "I expect you to make contact with her by tonight, Konohamaru.""By toni- are you kidding me?" he spat out. "Do you know how many guys try to talk to this girl a day? What's wrong with the standard ANBU-protocol 'watch over the target without introducing myself,' thing?!"Kakashi slid his eyes over to him. "Chicken?""He did study under Naruto," Sai chimed in. "Perhaps in his training he also learned to not have a penis."Konohamaru's eyebrow twitched as he flexed his jaw, fighting the urge to retort "I do SO have a penis!" or something equally as embarrassing, because Sai irritated people into doing the strangest shit."Fine," he spat out between clenched teeth. "I'll report in tonight." With that he exited, cursing under his breath the whole way.Mentally, though, he was already running the logistics of this assignment. Undoubtedly another female agent would have to be pulled in for some of this, considering there were places his assignment would go that he just wouldn't be able to follow."Moegi would be best," he thought, mentally flipping through possible mission partners. As a former teammate, Moegi worked well with Konohamaru, and they'd tag-teamed on assignments before. He sort of wondered why Moegi wasn't assigned to begin with. Then again, Hanabi had bodyguards, and it was no secret to anyone that she was an elite shinobi – maybe this was something that went beyond just a protection assignment."Threat to dōjutsu users," he murmured. An outside, unknown threat. Well, that made it a little more entertaining at least. Babysitting assignments weren't his favorite, and he'd been wanting something with a little more meat. But if he was on Hanabi's duty, then he could bet who was on Hinata's.He pulled out his phone and punched in the code for a fellow security contact."Hey, kid.""Hey. I hear we might be working together?""Did you talk to Kakashi and Genma?""Kakashi. Just got the file."
"Mm. Uzumaki and Uchiha still going strong?
"
"Yeah. I'm betting you have money riding on it?""Naturally. Genma always has a pool going when those two go at it. So. What do you need?""Did Genma say anything about another female on this assignment? I can't exactly follow Hanabi into the restrooms.""Why? Forget how to do your sexy-no-jutus?""Nah – made Ebisu get a nosebleed just last week, for old time's sake. But seriously, Tenten – what are my resources?""Genma will give you the details, but Hanabi will still have her normal guards, so you don't have to worry about monitoring her in the bathroom unless you go somewhere her guards aren't. Genma listed Moegi, Udon, and Inari as having clearance for information on this one – since you'll all be on campus.""I don't know Hanabi very well," Konohamaru admitted. "You think she'll get along with our gang?""I think it is your gang's job to get along with her," Tenten said pointedly, "but yeah – I think she'll surprise you.""If you say so," he shrugged. "I defer to you on all things Hyūga.""I am kind of an expert," she grinned. "Now check in with Genma. He was having a meeting with Hiashi today, so it might be a good chance to introduce yourself."Konohamaru blinked."Hiashi like Hyūga Hiashi? He knows about this assignment?""He knows that you are an intern with the ASF and that you are currently working under Gemna. He has been told that you are being brought on board as an extra set of eyes and a capable addition to the existing team. Neither he nor Genma want Hanabi to know about your assignment.""So is this an ANBU thing or an ASF thing?""Both. ANBU is working on the finer points of the threats, so any assigned agents have to have ANBU clearance. Officially, you are being brought on board through the ASF side of things, if you are looking for technicalities. All you really need to know is that you report to Genma.""So back to the part where I don't really know Hanabi?"
"You were invited for the clan celebration on the 27th, right? Her birthday?"
"Is that what that is?" he paused to flip through the file. "It didn't really say.""I'll go over the finer points of it with you later, but there are two events marking Hanabi's birthday this year. This one isn't so bad," he could hear her shrug. "There are some bells and whistles because she is turning twenty and therefore "of age," but it boils down to a birthday celebration for mostly family and a few select guests. The big event is in June, when she is formally instated as the heir."Konohamaru's smart watch buzzed against his wrist, and he tapped it to read the message."Aaand there's Genma telling me to come by. Guess I'll learn more about this. Kinda weird to not meet Hanabi until her birthday party, though, isn't it? Like – something kind of kindergarten about the whole thing…""You're just worried she won't like you and your cooties.""My cooties and I happen to be well liked and accepted anywhere we go," Konohamaru sniffed.Tenten laughed, "Good luck, kid," and hung up.Konohamaru tucked his phone away with an impish grin. Tenten didn't have a clan, so as the rest of the Konoha 11 grew into their clan roles, she'd grown into her position at the armory and working with Genma on security assignments. That's where he'd gotten to know her, and decided she was kind of like a really cool older cousin or sister. Also, she may have once saved him from getting thumped by Temari when he was a kid, and he might technically owe her his life. But either way, still cool.Genma, on the other hand, was very often not cool. He liked to stir up shit, and Konohamaru was often the recipient of said shit stirring. He knocked politely on Genma's office door, and only opened it when invited to do so."You sent for me?""I did," he said lazily before turning to the other man in the room – none other than Hyūga Hiashi. "This is Sarutobi Konohamaru, the young man I was telling you about. He is one of our most promising interns here at the ASF.""Unsurprising, given his family," Hiashi noted, his pale eyes inscrutable as he considered Konohamaru. "And do you also have plans to join the Allied Shinobi Force after graduation?" Hiashi inquired."Yes," he said politely before grinning, "Like you said - it runs in the family.""And you attend Konoha University, do you not?""Yes, sir.""And what year are you?""I am finishing my third year.""He is a member of the Konoha House. In fact - " Genma took the senbon out of his mouth, studying it idly, "- Konohamaru is up for the position of president next year." He looked up at the young man, his taunting expression unnoticed by the serious Hyūga."We have high hopes for him. Very high hopes indeed""Is that so?" Hiashi raised his eyebrows. "That is quite the accomplishment. Congratulations."Kohohamaru blushed slightly, making a mental note to have words with Genma. "Thank you, sir."The Konoha House was ostensibly an honor's society/dormitory with separate dwellings for the outstanding young men and women at Konoha University. In reality, it doubled as a base for the ANBU members at KU and those that needed special protection, and they were connected to the main base and each other via the underground shuttle system. In practice, the boy's dormitory was much more like a frat house known to have the absolute best parties on campus, especially during Bonfire Nights. The years when Naruto, Kiba, Chōji, and Shikamaru attended were legendary, and Konohamaru had long sought to surpass them. It just wasn't the sort of thing you mentioned to the leader of arguably the most prestigious clan in Konoha - particularly not when you're being considered for the security team for his youngest child and heir.Hiashi gave a short nod as if deciding something, and crossed his arms over his broad chest. "I would speak with you about a certain matter in which I feel you could assist me," he said. "That is, if you have the time," he added graciously.Konohamaru looked to Genma – and once he received a nod, turned back."I have time, sir."
Hanabi
*The Introduction*
Tuesday, March 24th 11:15 AM KST
ASF Headquarters
Hanabi was worried. She was also annoyed. Not three nights ago, she had been speaking with her sister, worried about her after her flight to Suna. In that amount of time, her sister had come rushing back on life-flight (which she knew must have sent her blood pressure through the roof), helped treat the Kazekage's brother, and been pulled into some highly classified ASF research with Dr. Haruno.Last night Neji had assured her that Hinata was fine, but that Lady Tsunade had insisted she rest, and put her in a carefully monitored sleep. She'd gotten a text that morning that Hinata was tired, but well.Having had no progress getting any thing else out of Neji, Hanabi decided for a different approach. Shiranui Genma was the head of security for the ASF, and regularly worked with her father; he would have to know more about what was going on.Something about everything was not sitting right with her. Of course the ASF had top secret research – but if this had been biological in nature, that could be cross-classified as a terrorist act. Counterterrorism was ANBU's department. As the heir, Hanabi was aware of ANBU and exempt from recruitment – just as Hinata was. It wouldn't surprise her if Hinata was helping ANBU out (because it wouldn't surprise her if Hinata was helping anyone out), but she had a strong feeling that all of this was far more complicated than she was being told."If only I had someone on the inside like Genma is on the inside," she muttered to herself. It was a gamble that Genma would tell her anything, but she could at least give it a shot. It wasn't until she got to the ASF headquarters that she learned her father was meeting with Genma right then."Do you want me to call over and tell them you are here?" the receptionist asked kindly."No, thank you," Hanabi shook her head politely. "I'll just wait for my father in the reception area."She decided to try her sister one more time."Why Hanabi," a warm, kind voice came on the line. "How nice to hear from you!""Master Sarutobi?" she blinked. "I…yes, it is nice to hear you as well. Is my sister there?""She is," and she could picture him nodding his head once."May I speak with her?""I am afraid that she has been trapped by the combination of a peaceful garden and hot tea – but she is well, and should be able to call you back in a few hours."Hanabi's smile was slow. "You tricked her into falling asleep, didn't you?""Tricked is a strong word.""Thank you for looking out for her," Hanabi felt some of the tension slide off of her shoulders."I'll have her call you when she wakes."The conversation ended with her sincere thanks, and his assurances that they were unnecessary. Hanabi tucked her phone away with a sense of relief. Master Sarutobi was incredibly fond of her sister – he would make sure that she was well. His ever-present medic Yori would be there as well; Hinata was in good hands."At least someone tells me things," she muttered, pocketing her phone.Hanabi was frustrated. In several days, she would turn twenty, and be considered "of age" in her clan. She would declare her intent to accept her position as heir on her birthday, and then, presuming she passed her clan's succession rituals, would be formally declared as the next clan head at the summer solstice. She had been training for the position of heir since she was a small child. She'd accompanied her father in the board room and on business trips. She was a master practitioner of the Gentle Fist style, and an extremely accomplished shinobi. In her two years at Konoha University, she'd distinguished herself academically, and was universally recognized as a quick-witted and excellent student with a bright future ahead of her. However, the uneven balance between freedom, responsibility, and inclusion in her life was beginning to chafe. It rankled Hanabi her to be forced to ferret out important information - like if her sister was alright - as if she were a child that didn't need to know the affairs of the adults. She had only two years left at KU, discounting the remainder of the semester, and she was more than a little tired of not having the freedom to enjoy the experience. It was the one irritation she didn't feel she could confide in anyone. Normally, she'd speak with Hinata, or Neji, but Hinata had taken over as Clan Mother when she was sixteen, and her time at University was spent living at home while managing the clan's affairs.Neji had been a diligent student, staying on campus occasionally, should it better serve his academic schedule – but he had no life outside of his studies and his assignments. Naturally, as the incipient head of the branch family, he had been a member of ANBU as well, and had those obligations, but he never indicated he had any interest in university life. Had Tokuma not stepped forward to take over the role of ANBU liason after the death of her Uncle, Neji might have skipped University altogether."It is an honor to stand in for Lord Hizashi," he had assured Neji, "But I will only stay until you are ready to take his place."She grimaced, remembering that Tokuma still wasn't back from his mission. She mentally added "Ask about Tokuma" to her "things to get Genma to tell me" list.A familiar voice broke through her musings and over the general hum of people bustling around the building."Hanabi," Kurenai smiled broadly. "I thought that was you.""Kurenai-sensei," she returned the smile. "How nice to see you. How are my favorite little ninjas?""The kids are fine. Shōgi was just asking about you.""Then I'll have to make a point to come see him," she pulled up her phone and flipped to her calendar. "I'm free later in the week.""We'd love to see you any time – you know that. Oh," she looked past Hanabi. "Konohamaru! What are you doing here?"Hanabi tucked her phone away and looked up to the young man striding over to them, with an open, friendly smile."Hanabi, I don't know if you remember Konohamaru – Asuma's nephew?""I'm your nephew, too, Aunt Kurenai," Konohamaru teased her lightly, nodding to the wedding ring on her finger. "Nice to meet you," he nodded, adjusting his backpack on his shoulder."Likewise," the cool, professional mask of the Hyūga slipped back into place automatically."I was just going to get some lunch," he turned to his aunt. "Would you like to go?""I would," she checked her watch, "but I have an appointment to get to.""I get it," he shrugged. "Tell the kids I said hey – I'll be by later tonight to drop off some of Shōgi's stuff.""You spoil him," Kurenai tsked."Big Cousin prerogative," he shrugged. "Can't be helped. How about you?" he looked over to Hanabi. "Did you eat?""I haven't had lunch," she answered truthfully."Care to come along?"Years of grooming meant that while she appeared to do no more than consider his request, she was reflexively analyzing his offer for every conceivable motivation, as well as weighing the pros and cons of accepting or declining. She found no reason for him to solicit her company, and decided he was merely being polite."I wouldn't want to impose," she said with that polite finality that most people would understand meant "No."It appeared that Konohamaru was not most people."It's no imposition," he shrugged. "I'm not polite enough to have asked you if it was.""That, I fear, is true," Kurenai sighed. "Perhaps if you eat with Hanabi, some of those manners will rub off on you.""Could be worse," he shrugged again. "I could be Naruto.""Fair point." She rechecked her watch. "I really must go – take care, you two." She waved, hurrying away.Konohamaru waited a beat before a slow smile spread across his face, and he slid a look over to Hanabi."So," he said, mischief in his bright eyes. "Figure out my angle yet?"She arched an eyebrow at him."Angle?""You look like you're trying to figure out my master plan - but honestly, I'm just hungry. You pick where we eat, and if you get sick of my company, just say so, and i'll bugger off.""Hm," she looked him over. She wasn't particularly hungry, and she definitely wasn't social…. But perhaps she could work this to her advantage. She met his gaze openly. "Your approach is novel, I'll give you that.""You got nothing to lose," he grinned crookedly. "Meal is on me - even if you tell me to leave. Or you decide to leave. Either way, no harm no foul.""That is novel," she said dryly."So?" he raised his eyebrows. "Where are we going to eat?"The idea came to Hanabi out of nowhere, and it was so impetuous - so ridiculous - that it begged to come to fruition.A slow smile tugged at her lips."I know just the place."

. Bonfire Nights Chapter Two . . .Hanabi *The Interview*Tuesday, March 24 th 1:15 PM KST KonohaHanabi looked around the restaurant while sipping on the brightly colored straw of her giant soda, startling herself when she made a giant slurping sound. She blinked twice and stared at the drink in surprise, while Konohamaru jerked his chin to the cup."Need a refill?" he asked, already standing."I guess?"He gave a nod and stepped over to the self-serve drink counter, occasionally glancing around. Hanabi pretended to be otherwise engaged, noting that he scanned the room without appearing to do so. Despite being jovial and cheerful through lunch, his eyes had remained intelligent and sharp. He'd purposely positioned himself to be able to see who was coming and going, and had kept an eye on their beverages and the kitchens. He'd nodded to a girl that looked to be their age – she'd arrived about five minutes after they did and sat closer to the restrooms."Backup," Hanabi decided. He was keeping an eye on her – or at least on their situation. She was deciding what she thought about this (and if her father had put him up to it) when he returned to their table and handed her the cup. "I gotta say," he settled back into his seat with a quick glance around the room, (perimeter check, she thought) "of all of the places I thought you might pick, this wasn't one of them.""You don't like it?"Konahamaru smiled brightly. "Just the opposite. I love it. What's not to love about crazy decor and a fantastic burger selection? I just wouldn't have put it down as your cup of tea." He kicked his chair out and took a seat."You mean it isn't snobby enough.""Something like that," he laughed lightly. "Or at the very least I would've guessed you'd order a salad. You look waaaay too healthy to tackle a burger that size," he nodded to the remaining half of her massive burger. "But either way, I am totally impressed.""I've wanted to come here since I was a kid," she admitted. "I was supposed to come here for a birthday thing when I was eleven, but ended up not being able to go. Guess I was just curious."His eyes took on a mischievous gleam. "So you've never been here before?""No, never.""Mm," he signaled the waiter. "Just out of curiosity, when is your birthday?""Friday, actually," she drummed her fingers on the table. "The twenty-seventh." She suddenly narrowed her eyes at him, suspiciously. "Why?""So if you are a year behind me at KU, you'll be, what, twenty?""Yes," she arched an eyebrow at him. "Again, why?"The waiter appeared back at their table"Can I help you, sir?""No," he shook his head before smiling slyly, "but you can help the birthday girl.""Oh!" the waiter turned to her gleefully, "is it your birthday today?""Well, actually,-""Sure is," Konohamaru shot her a look rife with amusement and let-me-do-the-talking. "AND," he said pointedly, "she's Never. Been. Here.""You don't say?" the waiter cut his eyes to Hanabi and back, conspiratorially."I do. I do say," he shook his head sadly. "Tragic, isn't it?""Absolutely.""Now wait just a second, what is tragic about-"And that is when it happened. The waiter jumped up on a chair from a neighboring table, and signaled everyone for their attention. Her confusion bled into something between horror and astonishment as he announced that it was her birthday, and calling for three cheers, while various staff members began to scramble and move to surround them.Hanabi's instincts kicked in, and she immediately searched out the quickest exit. She pushed back her chair, ready to bolt, but Konohamaru stood behind her with two strong hands firmly on her shoulders. He was damned lucky she didn't act on instinct alone and gentle fist his smirking self through the wall, or maybe he was lucky that all of that caffeine that she never drank was coursing through her system and making her shake slightly."Can't leave yet," he leaned down to whisper in her ear. "Fun's just starting!""Fun?" she hissed in a whisper. "This is an ambush!""Trust me," he gave her shoulder a squeeze. "And while you're at it, please refrain from jyukening the snot out of me until this plays out.""Why are the staff swarming us? Are they chanting? ….Is that a hat?""Go with it," was his parting advice before Konohamaru stepped back as one person plopped the hat on to her head, and another thrust a dessert with a sparkler under her nose. Hanabi stared deer-in-the-headlights at Konohamaru who had now joined in singing along lustily to the silly birthday song, and cheering the loudest when they all yelled "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" They dispersed amid a smattering of good-natured claps and cheers from the restaurant patrons, returning to their business as if nothing had happened."What," she blinked at him, "was that?""That," Konohamaru, picked up the two forks, "was my birthday present to eleven-year-old-you. Congratulations," he handed her a spoon. She stated at the offered utensil mistrustfully."Wow. Neji makes that face when he isn't sure what to do with me. Is that a Hyūga thing or a cousin thing?"She glowered at him. "Right now it is a 'give me one good reason I shouldn't jyuken the snot out of you' thing.""I'm trying to hand you one," he waggled he spoon in front of her. "Besides. We can't have you turning twenty without ever having had a hugely embarrassing birthday moment in public involving a hat and a free dessert. It simply isn't done."She blinked at him."What?" he arched an eyebrow. "You think you were the only kid in Konoha who grew up with 'what is proper' lectures? Believe me – as the only grandchild of the former director of the ASF in Konoha, and son and nephew to distinguished members, and the universally acknowledged brattiest child in all of Konoha, I've heard them all."Something tugged at her lips."And did any of those lectures stick?""Some more than others. I'm pretty sure there was a long one about gifts and hospitality, and never, ever turning down cake and ice cream. Especially birthday cake and ice cream. It might be a law.""It might be," she conceded, eying him calculatingly."So," he raised his eyebrows to her, flicking his eyes between her and towering dessert – clearly meant to be shared. "You in, or what?"Hanabi felt the smile in her chest before it ever tugged at her lips. She could keep up her façade for just about forever, but there was something about this Sarutobi boy that inspired a mesasure of transparency… even if she was convinced he was not being wholly forthcoming about his objectives. Still, she managed to accept the proffered utensil with dignity and gravitas. "I couldn't possibly risk impropriety. Not with such an illustrious local celebrity as the former brattiest child in all of Konoha.""I might still be the title holder.""All the more reason to oblige.""Well then," he held his spoon out to her. "To new adventures?"She tapped her spoon against his. "To new adventures."Konohamaru *The Invitation*Tuesday, March 24 th 6:45 PM KST KonohaKonohamaru was having a long day. Early meetings, weird assignments, running into his Aunt and ending up having lunch with his protection assignment, returning to base for some serious training, running research on his latest assignment… it all made for a very tired Konohamaru returning to his dorm room with less than his usual energy. When he opened the door to his suite, the was greeted first by the enticing aroma pizza, and second by his roommate Inari."It was my turn to cook," he said nodding to the huge, hot, melty, cheesy goodness on the counter. "Hope you don't mind." At that moment, Konohamaru reaffirmed the guy was the best roommate ever."Nice," he breathed, closing the door and kicking off his shoes.Next to Naruto, Udon and Moegi, Inari was Konohamaru's closet friend. Despite having ANBU combat and taijutsu training, he wasn't a shinobi. The latest in a long line of bridge builders, he was a structural/architectural/civil engineer, and a valuable member of ANBU. His job didn't technically call for espionage or combat, but he had bravely gone places to build where he might be attacked, and his life had been on the line plenty of times. Luckily, his quick wits, broad back, and strong arms were enough to deter most troublemakers – and being friends with Konohamaru meant there was never a shortage of those."Something waiting for you on the counter," he said over his shoulder. "It was delivered earlier by someone named Kō? Looked like a Hyūga. What did you do? Talk to the heiress in the halls?" he teased, sitting at the island that separated their small dorm kitchen from the living area and grabbing a big slice of pizza.Konohamaru picked up the manila envelope and turned it over to undo the clasp on the back. The slight sizzle of chakra at his fingertips told him it had been sealed to be opened by him only.He pulled out two envelopes and a printed sheet of paper "It's probably the formal invitation to her birthday dinner," he said, scanning the letter. "Oh," his eyebrows raised. "I take it back. It's for the one this week, and for the other one in June.""In June?" Inari stared at him. "You got invited to that?""Letter says I've been added on as an extra for Gramps. That's probably Genma's way of making sure I'm around for the job. What?" he arched an eyebrow at his roommate."You don't even know, do you," Inari narrowed his eyes at him. "She's twenty this year, and heir to the oldest, biggest clan in Konoha. That isn't going to be just 'a birthday dinner,' and that's not just a party. That's her seijin-shiki, and it will be a ridiculously huge deal.""So… what? There'll be party favors? Maybe a goodie bag?""I hate you," Inari muttered with no real malice while Konohamaru laughed at him."Don't get so bent out of shape," he grabbed a slice of pizza and slapped it onto a paper plate. "I'm assigned to her security detail. Genma told me to tell you so that you didn't blow my cover."Inari stared at him. "You get all the luck.""Don't know that any assignment involving the Hyūgas can technically count as lucky." Konohamaru grimaced. "The minutia is pretty insane.""And in return you get to guard the hottest, most unapproachable girl on campus," Inari snorted. "You realize most guys would kill to be you, right?""Most guys haven't met Hiashi.""Hanabi was in one of my resource managment classes," Inari countered. "She was was unreal; ridiculously smart, calm, collected, and able to shut down stupid people with a single look."Konohamaru tried not to frown at his roommate's sudden and unexpected enthusiasm for this subject. "She doesn't strike me as your type.""Did I mention she is beautiful?""Rich, too," Konohamaru bit back sarcastically."Don't care," Inari shrugged. "I 've saved enough to take care of mom and grandpa; that's all I really care about. So back to me wanting to talk to the smart, beautiful girl for forever. How do we make that happen?""She. Is. An. Ah. Sign. Ment." Konohamaru said, emphasizing every syllable of his exasperation."Then. Why. Is. It. A. Prob. Lem." Inari mimicked him, punctuating each syllable with a whap to his roomie's head with a rolled up pizza flier. "She isn't my assignment. What would an introduction hurt?""No ANBU is supposed to interfere with an assignment," he pointed out. "And that includes you. Ask Udon or Moegi.""Oh, Moegi already told me about lunch," he sat back and chewed on his pizza, smirking. "She just didn't say who you were assigned to. Is she going to have to shadow the two of you from now on?" he laughed. "And why doesn't taking her to lunch count? Just bring me with you next time." He looked down at the invitation. "At least open those things up. I'm dying of curiosity."Konohamaru rolled his eyes. "If it will shut you up, fine," he muttered. He tore open the envelope and fished out the first invitation, scanned it, and handed it over to Inari."See? Just dinner."The second invitation was on a much heavier paper, complete with response card.Inari gave a low whistle. "Pretty swanky stuff. You sure you are up to this kind of classy assignment? Maybe you should have your Aunt Kurenai review all of the etiquette and rules for you, just in case.""Whatever, man," Konohamaru grabbed another piece of pizza, accidentally knocking the manila envelope to the floor. As he bent to pick it up, a piece of paper fluttered out, and he snatched it before Inari could notice. He deftly took back the invitation and pretended to read it while he read the note instead.Just heard that you will be attending. Maybe the events won't be as painful after all? Just kidding, if you survive the first one, I'll definitely owe you lunch. Perhaps somewhere they don't know it's not your birthday. –Hanabi.Konohamaru smirked."So what did she say?" Inari asked, his chin in his hand, as he swirled his giant glass of milk the way Kiba might swirl a beer."Who?"Inari just stared at him. "Hanabi. She must've written you something; you're blushing like a little girl.""I don't blush," Konohamaru objected."You blush," Inari nodded emphatically. "Man, after all of that talk about ANBU and assignments?" he prodded his roommate. "You're really something."Konohamaru looked up at his teasing roommate and took yet another piece of pizza."Inari?""Yeah?""Shut up."The two friends finished their dinner with no further discussion on the subject, but when Konohamaru saw that Inari had put the invitations on the fridge (Hanabi's note was in his pocket) he knew that they'd only just begun.
Yes, Inari from the first incarnation of YMBIS is back because I love him.

.
. Bonfire Nights Chapter Three . . .Neji *The Objection*Wednesday, March 25th 11:15 AM KST Konoha, ANBU BaseNeji Hyūga was lividOne minute he was proctoring Sakura's ANBU combat trials, the next the arena was being locked down, and a split second after that, he was displaced to Observation Room 7 with Kakashi and Sai, and the person responsible was standing in his place behind Sakura."Uchiha," he seethed, glaring at the man who had yet to be noticed by anyone other than Gaara. Tempted as he was to force his way back into the arena, he knew better than to attempt it as long as the lockdown barrier was in place. He watched the fight with clenched fist and jaw, his keen intellect and sharp eyes following every move. His relief at Uchiha saving Sakura was quickly replaced with ire."What is he thinking?" he spat."I do not think this was strictly a tactical decision," Sai ventured, following the chaos. "Although you would not have been fast enough to save her as he did, just then.""I wouldn't have left her side in the first place," Neji snapped. "A lesson you'd thought he would have learned by now."Sai might have winced, but all conversation stopped. As soon as the summons was gone, and the barrier was lifted, Neji strode to the door."Tell him what I said," he flicked a glance to Kakashi before locking eyes with Sai, ice in his glare and words. "Remind him that he isn't needed."With that, he left the room.He made it part way to the training arena when he was met with his cousin's teammates."Where is Hinata?""Master Sarutobi's medic came to get her," Kiba jerked a thumb over his shoulder. "They are going to go help Sakura and Lady Tsunade.""And Tenten?""She must've left the holding area as soon as she knew something was up," Kiba rubbed the back of his neck. "She wasn't in the room with us for the fight. Probably went to Genma or something. We're on our way to help Yamato round up the prisoners – she's supposed to help us."Neji gave a sharp nod, mentally cursing his teammate as impetuous."Then I will head to the infirmary to be there if Hinata needs me. Lee reported to Gai, I take it?""Almost immediately," Shino intoned. "Why? That is because,-""Ah, Neji – I hoped I'd catch up with you. Sorry to interrupt, Shino," Genma held up a hand, "but I sent Tenten ahead to Ibiki, and I want Neji here to be down there as well to check out some of the mercenaries. You two will be acting as representatives of the Hyūga and Aburame clans, respectively."Neji could do little more than glower his assent, a fell into step behind Genma."So, Genma," Kiba called over Neji's head. "How long would you say that fight was?""I'd have to look at the footage for an accurate time. Why?""No reason," Kiba shrugged innocently.Genma turned with a sly grin."You have a bet going, don't you?"Kiba shrugged again."I sense Tenten's hand in all of this," Genma reached for his key-card and slipped it into a reader on the wall. "Am I right?"Kiba's grin was slow and predatory. "You wouldn't be wrong.""I'll see what I can find out," Genma punched in a code and ushered them into the secured area. "Kotetsu and Izumo will take you back to the others," he motioned to the waiting Chūnin. "I'll catch up with you when I'm done chatting with Ibiki."The three men nodded and followed after their guides."Neji," Kiba bumped his arm and murmured. "What's that place that you guys like? The one with the dumplings?""Do you mean Ming's?" Neji frowned, confused by the shift in topic."Yeah, that's it," Kiba snapped his fingers. "Ming's! That's Tenten's favorite, isn't it?""I suppose," Neji was even more confused. "Why?""Because," Kiba grinned. "One of our bets involved dinner."Their conversation didn't have anywhere else to go, as they were in the detention area. Yūgao was busy signing some papers on a clipboard while another medic stood to the sideGenma nodded to the bodies covered in white sheets."Those two didn't make it?""One was dead before he got here," Yūgao said, handing the clipboard back to one of Ibiki's Chūnin. "Both were severely injured before arriving.""Let us know what you find out," Genma said easily. "Any clues could help us bring the rest of Anko's team home."Yūgao nodded, and she and the other medic left quietly to return to the morgue.Neji completed his tasks as asked, his eyes seeking out every clock he could find. They were finally brought down to a deep interrogation room, where Tenten stepped out in the hall."Ibiki is working," she said grimly. "You don't want to go in there.""You okay?" Kiba asked with a frown. "You look off balance.""I'm alright."Kiba peered at her more closely. "They throw up barriers?"Neji noticed how Tenten was favoring her arm and did a quick scan with his Byakugan."Your chakra looks like you were pulled through a barrier," he said, surprised. "And your chakra flow in your arm is disrupted.""We had someone get a little rowdy, that's all," she shook her head and took a half-step back, leaving Neji to lower his hand and wonder why she would reject his help before he even offered it."Well, the good news is I owe you dinner," Kiba offered. "Bet you could use a drink after today. Ming's?" Kiba raised his eyebrows.Tenten's grin was slow. "That could work."Genma appeared down the hall and signaled for Tenten to join him and she lifted one hand in acknowledgement."Duty calls." She turned to Neji. "I'll turn my half of the report in to Genma. Make sure you touch base with Yamato." Neji gave a single nod, and she turned to the other two. "Nice job today, Shino," she said much to his surprise. "I'll be tapping you for modifications to that equipment to make that stunt harder to pull.""I shall help where I can."Tenten sized up Kiba. "Meet you at Ming's?""Six-thirty?""If we get out of here?" she shrugged. "Sure.""Six-thirty it is."Tenten gave a final smile and strode down the hall to Genma, disappearing around the corner.Neji frowned before turning on Kiba. "Why did you ask about a barrier?""The barriers down here leave a faint scent when crossed; it helps us to track people if we need to.""But why would she have had to cross a barrier down here?""If one of Ibiki's guests got rowdy like she said, they have defensive shields they can throw up and pull one of ours through. Or one of us can cross into it to get someone or something out. Sometimes there are barriers around people being interrogated by Ibiki. If it happened fast and she had to help subdue someone, one of ours might've put up a mini containment barrier; she'd have to cross it to get out."Neji nodded absently, deciding that it made sense. Yamato appeared moments later to speak with them, and he replied automatically, even as the sense of something not being right tugged at his subconscious. Whether it was the barrier or Tenten meeting Kiba at Ming's, he could not say.The feeling followed him as he outlined his notes for his morning meeting with his Uncle and Genma. His team and Hinata's would be serving as extra security for both of Hanabi's parties, and he wanted to touch base with them all about the dinner on Friday. His phone buzzed next to him.'Eternal Rival! I cannot reach Tenten. Are you both alright?'Neji considered the question. Tenten had, as Kiba observed, seemed 'off,' but she was unconcerned. She had left with Genma, and if she wasn't replying to Lee, she must be busy. If Neji mentioned his concerns, he might worrying Lee unnecessarily, which would irritate her to the nth degree. With a sigh, he tapped out:'We are both fine.'He hadn't even put his phone down before the reply came.
'Excellent! I was inspired by the find display of youth today; shall we train tomorrow morning?'
Neji smiled to himself.'I will be there.'Neji waited until his phone buzzed at least five more times before reading all of Lee's responses: one affirmative and multiple declarations of youth."At least one of my teammates is predictable," he thought, shaking his head. His phone buzzed one more time.'Tell me you didn't agree we would all train with an overly enthusiastic Lee tomorrow morning.'It was Tenten.'Why?' He smirked. 'Planning on a late night?''No - I was planning on not engaging Lee for at least 24 hours. Do you remember the last time he was this excited?'Neji paused. The last time they'd trained with Lee when he was this inspired...'You're remembering right now, aren't you. Lucky for you I suggested he and Gai do one of their ridiculous celebrations - I am betting 500 laps around city proper on their hands. You're welcome.''Fair enough. Coffee is on me tomorrow.'She sent back a 'thumbs up,' and he tucked the phone away. "Guess neither of us can afford a long night," he sighed, eyeing his paperwork. He returned to work, ignoring the fraction of his being that was lighter knowing Tenten would never make the mistake of staying out too late before dealing with an overenthusiastic Lee.
Konohamaru *The VIP*
12:27 PM KST Konoha, ANBU Base
Konohamaru started the morning excited to see some quality exercises in the training arena. Granted, a large part of that excitement came from knowing Uchiha was going to have to watch his ex be insanely awesome. Dr. Haruno did not disappoint, but even in his wildest dreams, Konohamaru wouldn't have pictured her being the Kazekage's teammate.Once the arena was released from lockdown, everyone mobilized. He hadn't been directly called into action, so he sent a text to Genma and Tenten."Guessing Security Meeting is postponed?"It was Genma that finally messaged back.
"Go ahead to the meeting room and relieve the current agent. Wait for further instruction."
"Relieve current agent?" he mumbled to himself as he tucked his phone away. "What's that supposed to mean?"It all fell into place when he arrived to find Master Sarutobi sitting placidly and reviewing a file."Ah," he looked up with amusement. "Here you are.""Hey, Gramps," he looked around the room. "Where's Yori?""Escorting Lady Huyga back to the infirmary.""I'm surprised Ebisu isn't here looming over you like a hawk.""I am not quite as feeble as everyone appears to think," his eyes twinkled merrily. "I managed to relocate undetected. And since there isn't much for us to do until Genma arrives," he pulled out a pipe and set it to the side. "We might as well catch up.""Well there's one good thing," Konohamaru moved to the side table. "Genma always manages to have food for meetings.""Yes. The rumor was that he won a bet with someone in catering.""He has a way of doing that," Konohamaru chuckled. "Winning bets, I mean.""Genma is excellent at weighing odds and outcomes against one another. He says that being in security so long means he knows people.""Guess that makes sense," he pulled out a chair and sat next to his Grandfather and put a plate of food between them. "So what did you do to get pulled into this assignment?""You mean other than being one of the longest serving members of the ASF and ANBU?" He quirked an eyebrow."Yeah. Other than that.""I am one of the few people who is familiar enough with both the Uchiha and Huyga to be of help – especially when discussing how their dōjutsu can be targeted and protected.""I remember Lady Hyūga coming to visit you when I was little," Konohamaru plucked out a couple of grapes. "I was usually sent to the other end of the compound, but I remember.""Yes, she would visit," Master Sarutobi sighed wistfully. "She was a kind woman and a good friend – to both your Grandmother and me. Hinata – the current Lady Hyūga often accompanied her. When she took over as Clan Mother, she made a point to bring me the teas and tobaccos that her mother used to bring.""Wow," Konohamaru breathed. "So you know Lady Hinata pretty well?""I do.""What about Hanabi?""Hanabi," the corners of his mouth tipped with the same mischief that had helped his Grandson make quite a name for himself as a child. "I wondered when that would come up. I've been told you are my 'plus one' for the Hyūga events. Shall I bring my cane and lean on it heavily to help you keep your cover?""Only if you use it to trip Ebisu like you did at that dinner two years ago.""That was purely an accident," he reached for his tea. "However, I should probably fill you in on a few key players of the Hyūga Family – especially Elder Hyūga."Konohamaru wince. "I might have heard a few things about him.""I can imagine," he said dryly. "Elder Hyūga doesn't often bother himself with the youth of Konoha – and by that he means anyone younger than his son Hiashi, or not one of his three grandchildren. As my grandson you might pass relatively unnoticed.""And that is…. good?""That is less work for you and everyone trying to maintain your cover. But it will require strategy."Konohamaru sighed heavily."I'm going to have to behave, aren't I?"His Grandfather's eyes twinkled."Only within reason.""So… if I can sneak you extra dessert without Yori or Lady Tsunade knowing, you'll trip Ebisu and maybe help cover for me.""Now you are asking the important questions," His grandfather's grin was a mirror for his own. "Let's talk 'Hyūga.'"
Tenten *The Dinner*
6:47 pm KST Konoha, Ming Flower Restaurant
"How's the lo mein?" Kiba asked, nodding to Tenten's dinner."Great. How is your beef?""Really good. I can see why you like this place.""Best food in Konoha," she grinned. "Want a sesame dumpling? They are my absolute favorite."Kiba reached out and took a dumpling with his chopsticks and then popped the whole thing into his mouth."Vif if rerry gud," he said. At her look of confusion, he hurriedly swallowed his mouthful and tried again. "Sorry. Manners. That was 'This is really good.'"Tenten pushed her plate toward him. "Have another; I always order extra."Akamaru crossed to Tenten's side of the table and sat expectantly. Tenten hesitated and looked to Kiba, but at his nod, she was quick put two dumplings on a plate. "There you go, big guy," she smiled, placing the treats in front of Akamaru with a fond pat to his head. He leaned into her before daintily nibbling on the first dumpling. She looked up to Kiba with a big smile. "I know we aren't supposed to spoil your dogs, but Akamaru is pretty amazing."Akamaru looked up at her and thumped his tail on the floor happily."Looks like the feeling is mutual," Kiba reached for his drink. "Akamaru always was a great judge of character.""Thanks," she said easily. "You aren't so bad yourself.""Can't say much for my luck betting against you, though," he leaned back in his seat. "How am I going to redeem myself? Perhaps another bet?""What did you have in mind?"After a long pull on his beer, he offered "Pool."Tenten quirked an eyebrow. "Pool?""Yeah," Kiba's smile was sly. "Not tonight - you have training the morning. But beat me at pool tomorrow night, and I'll pay for dinner.""And if you win?""Then you pay for dinner.""Interesting," she mused. "Why pool?""Because I feel like someone paying for my dinner tomorrow night.""You seem pretty sure of yourself.""I am," he shrugged. "That place down from Ichiraku's sound good? Say about Six?"Tenten considered him for a moment before shrugging. "Why not?""So, it's a deal?""Yeah," she stuck out her hand. "It's a deal."Kiba shook her hand. "Guess I should say sorry in advance. I hope you won't hate me in the morning.""I'll take my chances, Inuzuka," she said dryly.Silently they were both already congratulating themselves on the game's inevitable outcome.
Hanabi *The Sisters*
11:24 PM KST Konoha, Huyga compound
Once Hanabi was sure everyone in the Hyūga household was asleep, she slipped out of the main building and took the well-worn path to the family garden. She needed to talk. The footpath was brilliant white in the stark moonlight – courtesy of a rare break from the cloud cover that had been draping the Konoha skies. She moved silent as a shadow to her Mother's memorial, tucked into what had been her favorite part of the garden. As she stepped out of her winter boots and into the warmth, (the heated floor most welcome on her heavily socked feet), she mentally thanked her sister for insisting the memorial be designed as an all-weather space. She approached the family shrine and lit the incense before placing the night blossom she'd plucked on her way."Hello, Mother," she smiled wistfully. "I've missed you."Quietly she knelt on the tatami mats and told her mother about her last few days, and her introduction to Konohamaru, and Hinata's adventures as she knew them to be."She came home tonight very tired," Hanabi confided. "I barely saw her before she retired to her room, and I have so many things I want to ask her," she trailed off, recognizing her sister's approaching chakra. "…and here she is."Hinata offered Hanabi a small, tired smile."I thought you might be here," she touched her shoulder before paying her respects to her Mother, laying another bloom next to Hanabi's.Hanabi waited for her sister to offer her prayers, hiding her frown at her obvious fatigue."Long day?" Hanabi asked."You could say that," Hinata chuckled. "You?""I was having my second to last bratty-chat with Mother. I promised myself I'd leave them behind once I turned of-age. Just the complaining part," she was quick to add. "I'll still come talk to Mother."Hinata hummed her agreement and wound her fingers into Hanabi's."I am glad that you speak with Mother," she said quietly. "But I hope that you will come speak to me as well.""Of course I will," Hanabi leaned her head on Hinata's shoulder. "Who else would I go to…" she trailed off.Hinata squeezed her fingers, encouraging her to continue."It's just…" she took in a deep breath. "I have people that love me – and you and Neji are everything to me, and I love Kurenai and Kō and Father, but… I don't really have friends.""It's hard, isn't it?" Hinata asked gently. "Stepping outside of all that we are called to do to get to know people as just us.""Yeah," Hanabi breathed her relief, glad she detected no hurt in her sister's tone. "With as much security that is always around, it is hard to just get to know someone. And Father met with Genma recently, so I am betting that means something is up.""We do have the Clan events coming up," Hinata offered."What are the chances we can cancel the big dinner and just go get pizza?"Hinata laughed."I can try – but I think Grandfather might be an obstacle.""And he can see through clones," Hanabi groaned, "so no help there. And he does that pinch," she rubbed her arm where the phantom pain of pinches past still lingered. "You know – the one where he dispels a clone and you feel it for days?!""Yes," Hinata agreed ruefully, rubbing her own arm. "He has that technique down to an art.""Guess we'd better just go through with everything as planned," Hanabi sighed."Next week," Hinata smoothed Hanabi's hair. "We'll go get pizza or whatever you want. You and me – or whomever you wish to invite."Hanabi hugged her sister, and something else skittered across her mind."Speaking of invitations," she ventured, "I saw the list. I think Father is up to his matchmaking ploys again.""Probably," Hinata shrugged. "But he can't do anything without my approval – so we are both safe.""When did you stop liking Naruto?"Hinata blinked, confused."I don't dislike Naruto."Hanabi stared at her. "But didn't you used to really like him?" she persisted."Oh," Hinata's smile was wry. "That kind of like. Yes, a long time ago," she admitted. "But he never really noticed."Hanabi kept staring at her. "Was he dead at the time?"Hinata should have blushed, but she surprised her sister by laughing out loud. Well. It was Hinata, so laughing out quiet. "It was a long time ago, " she smiled. "I think I'm relieved he didn't. It makes life less awkward.""And what about now?" Hanabi asked, taking her sister's hand and meeting her gaze seriously. "Is there anyone that would make your heart happy?"Hinata put her hand over her sister's. "Now I am focused on the people that I will always love, and my work. Sixteen was such a long time ago, Hanabi," she squeezed her hand. "But there is something that will never change."Hanabi looked to her expectantly."I will always be here for you," Hinata leaned her forehead against her sister's. "And not because you are The Heir and I am Clan Mother and there is Duty; I'll always be here because you are my sister and I love you. I am so proud of you and everything you are. You are smart and clever – and they are not the same thing – and strong and beautiful," she smoothed a piece of hair from her sister's face. "Mother would be proud."The sisters hugged tightly and Hanabi pretended that the moisture beaded on her lashes was melted snow.Hinata tucked her sister into her side, and they were quiet a moment before Hanabi cleared her throat and ventured:"I might… It's too early to tell, but…I might have one friend."Hinata smiled into her hair."Tell me about them."And so, she did.The next morning would come far too early, but neither seemed to mind. Some things were just more important than others – and both Hinata and Hanabi considered her sister (and her brother) to be above anything or anyone else.
I love the Hyūga sisters.
This is a continuation of YMBiS, and returning readers will recognize some of the material from the original story, especially in the upcoming chapters. Unlike the other side arcs, this will run concurrently with the main story for a longer period of time.... mostly because I love Konohamaru and his friends. Especially Inari. Special thanks to Aurora Lynne for re-sparking that KonoHana interest, and for sticking with my crazy stories!!!!
With so many thanks, friends

Konohamaru
*The Check-In*
Friday, March 27th 4:45 PM KST
Konoha, The Five Kages
They'd made it as far as the coat check before his grandfather had been stopped to speak with someone. Konohamaru quietly took both of their outer coats and handed them to the attendant who promised to be right back.He took the moment alone to tug on the collar of his shirt, and wonder why anyone willingly wore a tie. As soon as the attendant returned with his tickets, he tucked them in the inside pocket of his jacket, and turned to find his grandfather still engaged in conversation. When he spotted Tenten, he nodded to her, and she motioned for him to step into the coat check area with her. Once they were out of sight of the others, she nodded to the woman who was hanging up the coats (which told him she was at the very least an ASF agent) and waited for her to go back out to the front to look him over."Not bad, kid. Kurenai take you shopping?""Yeah," he winced as he adjusted his tie. "She said this wasn't the super formal one, and Genma wanted me to be able to be more mobile, so no traditional attire.""Are you going to pull at that thing all night?""…Maybe?""Then take it off and unbutton the top button. Go for 'up-and-coming-collegiate' rather than 'my-mom-made-me-wear-a-tie.""Thanks," he sighed in relief and undid the tie and stuffed into his coat – which he spotted hanging on a nearby rack separate from the other guests."Much better," she nodded. "Just needs one last thing."He stood still while she fastened the pin to his lapel, which he realized would identify him to other members of the security team, and handed him the tiny wireless earbud that would vanish from sight as soon as he fit it snugly into his ear. They did a quick sound check and she made sure his phone was showing up in the ASF and ANBU tracking systems."Everything is set," she handed back his phone with a smile. "You alright?"He shrugged. "I've navigated people with Gramps loads of times. I think I'll be ok. How about you?" he looked her over. "You ok being unarmed?""I'm never unarmed," she snorted. "I'm just better at hiding my weapons.""Now that I believe," he chuckled."Now for the details," she checked her watch for the time. "Genma is running the show, but Kakashi's team minus Naruto is here. Sai is mixed in with the serving staff, but we don't want to tap the other two unless there is a bona fide emergency. As far as anyone knows, they are on the guest list and nothing else. I'm here as 'a friend of the family,' so I'm expected to be on the periphery and helping, especially if the girls need me. As a fellow guest you can approach me at any time without worry or consequence.""Got it, Ms. Sato," he saluted, using the surname she had adopted in civilian life. "What are my marching orders?""Glad you asked," Genma's voice appeared in their ears, making Konohamaru startle, and Tenten roll her eyes. "Your job is primarily to stay with your Grandfather since we have plenty of eyes on Hanabi. Your main reason to be here is to establish that you have grounds to know Hanabi outside of KU and have similar social circles so that when you are seen other places it won't seem out of place. Master Sarutobi will take the lead with the cocktail hour. Dinner should be uneventful but the crowd will be more liquid after the meal. We've narrowed the accessible areas to the mezzanine, the 5th floor, and the observation area. Anyone that exits those areas has to check back in at a host stand to reenter. Once he decides to retire to the cigar room, you can move on your own. Any questions?""Not yet," Konohamaru shrugged."Good. Tenten, take the Sarutobis up to the mezzanine. Master Sarutobi is about three paces from where you last saw him, and could use an assist to escape boring conversation.""Roger," Tenten grinned. Genma signed off, and they slipped back through the sea of oncoming guests to find Master Sarutobi. Once they extricated him from his conversation and into the elevator, he sighed in relief. "Thank you," he rubbed his forehead. "I was beginning to think I'd be spending the party three meters from the coat check.""We would have brought you a plate," Konohamaru nudged him with his elbow, as they stepped out from the elevator onto the wide landing of the mezzanine. Tenten led them to a corner where they could either stand or sit in the comfortable chairs, and motioned to one of the circulating attendants who brought them water and promised to return with hors d'oeuvres "I think that's it for me," she smiled. "Genma will check in with the two of you shortly. I'm going to go check on the girls.""Thank you, Tenten," Master Sarutobi smiled. "Excellent work as always.""Thank you, sir," she bowed, and slipped into the crowd.Konohamaru waited until she was out of earshot to ask "You need something stronger than water?""Definitely."
Hanabi
*The Hour Before*
5:00 PM KST
The Five Kages was not only a restaurant, it had many amenities for its guests. A popular venue for parties and weddings, Hanabi was currently seated in a suite on the 5th floor where she'd been since earlier that day. She and Hinata had spent the morning together, and had followed Ino's advice and gone to an out-of-the way spa where no one had thought to look for them."Today was nice," Hanabi sighed happily, wiggling her painted toes. "I almost hate to ruin it by going to the party.""I understand," Hinata laughed lightly. "But I think you will enjoy it. It is an important day, after all.""I guess," Hanabi shrugged one shoulder. "At least I'm not coming straight from a week of ceremonial spars.""True. Which is why that party is at the end of the week – and not all in one day.""In case I fail?""To give everyone else time to recover.""You think so, huh?" Hanabi leaned into her sister to nudge her."I know so," Hinata nudged back. "I am quite happy to exercise my right as Clan Mother to recuse myself from the spars.""I dunno," Hanabi eyed her slyly. "I think it would be interesting to go full out – now that we are older.""True," Hinata's smile twitched. "But only if I am your only opponent that day. It would hardly be a good fight if I had to face you at anything other than full strength.""True. And after two years of trying to figure out how to bypass Neji when I am exhausted, I really don't want to go through that level of thought for an opponent that isn't trying to kill me."Hinata raised her eyebrows. "And have you found a way to face Neji?""I think I'm on to something," she said vaguely. "Any chance we can evade certain guests?""I'll let you in on a little secret," Hinata whispered, and Hanabi leaned in. "The trick is not to evade certain guests. It is to greet them on your terms, and then redirect them politely so that they think it was all their idea."Hanabi's eyes grew wide. "Are you telling me," she asked, her voice barely a breath, "That all this time I thought you were super polite, and you were Devious. The. Whole. Time?!"Hinata nodded gravely.Hanabi shook her head. "Just when you think you know someone."The girls held their gazes for about a second longer before erupting into giggles."Come on," Hinata stood, holding her hand out to Hanabi. "We should finish getting ready.""Only if you tell me more secret ways to get rid of people."Hinata smiled."Deal."
Sasuke
*The Reminder*
5:20 PM KST
Sasuke didn't particularly care for social obligations, but that hardly meant he didn't know how to navigate them. He'd shown up twenty minutes after the cocktail party started to make sure others saw him arriving. He was dressed in an expensive suit, and was spotted checking his coat as well as a gift for the heir to he Hyūga dynasty before making his way to the mezzanine to greet Master Sarutobi and several other prominent figures in Konoha's society.Everyone who was anyone was there, but there was an unspoken rule with people like Sasuke and the Hyūga. Don't approach unless approached. Therefore, Sasuke pretended to ignore the mothers that might want to introduce him to a daughter, and even took time to greet Ino, knowing someone other than the official photographer had snapped a photo of them both."A few attempts at pictures," Ino murmured as they sipped on their respective beverages. "But the Hyūga have a tight lid on whatever press can enter. There might be a Ninstagram or Chirp photo or two, but no one publishes anything without Hiashi's say-so.""That's alright," Sasuke gave a hint of a shrug. "They only see what we let them."She hummed her agreement as she sipped her beverage. She slid him a glance before offering, "I heard Naruto's flight landed safely. Everyone is settled in Suna.""The dobe let me know," Sasuke studied her. "But… It is nice to hear.""Quarter turn toward me," she murmured, and he complied."Amateur photographer?"She nodded.A hint of a smile played across his lips."Did you just help me?""Nothing of the sort," she scoffed. "I'd just prefer if they catch my good side.""And here I remember you saying you don't have a bad one. At least when it comes to pictures.""Don't press your luck, Uchiha. I meant what I said in the locker room.""I never doubted that for a second.""And?"He studied her for a moment before stepping toward her as if to let someone pass by."Another photographer," he said before sipping his drink. "I'd hate to see anyone catch your bad side."Ino took the olive branch with a "Good call," before smiling at someone behind him who had obviously beckoned her. "See you around, Sasuke.""Ino," he lifted his glass as she moved on to socialize, leaving him to navigate the crowd as he saw fit.
Neji
*The Trouble With Guests*
5:25 PM KST
Neji calmly observed the throng of guests as they moved about the wide mezzanine, their voices a hum that echoed over the balcony and drifted into the main atrium below. Had the restaurant not been closed for their use only, Neji might have had concerns about disturbing other patrons, but the Hyūgas had the entire venue to themselves. As to the crowd, It wasn't surprising, really to see so many people of note gathered to honor his cousin and his clan. It would be nothing compared to the formal installation of Hanabi as heir – that event would be truly massive. Still, her seijin-shiki was not to be overlooked. Because Hanabi was now of age in the clan, she was automatically included more in family matters – particularly ones pertaining to the business. Even if she wasn't the heir apparent, her voice would carry more weight as Hiashi's daughter, and the business world would listen. Many of the people attending that evening were business associates more than anything else. Most of them would return for the formal ceremony in June, eager to find themselves at the same event as foreign diplomats, national leaders, and other prestigious persons.Because of those expectations, Neji knew that Uchiha would be invited to the event – he just assumed he would send his regrets as usual. He'd be lying if he said he wasn't still irritated from the stunt he'd pulled earlier in the week, but Genma had reminded him that there was a known threat to dōjutsu users, and his cousins were targets."If we have him at the birthday party, it will make more sense if he is at the big to-do in the summer," Genma had shrugged. "With that many people there, we will need someone like him, and it affords the girls some extra security."Neji wasn't totally convinced that was the whole of the matter – especially since his Uncle had been making remarks about Uchihas in general lately – but he could not deny that Sasuke would be a deterrent to all but the most stupid of criminals. To that end, Neji was just about to discretely activated his Byakugan and to do a quick security sweep when Sai's voice appeared in his ear."I've identified a member of the staff that might be a person of interest. He is trying to be one of the ones to bring refreshments to the family-only area. How would you like me to proceed?""Keep an eye on him for now, Sai," Kakashi's voice chimed in. "Tenten?"
"If he makes it to my sector, I will intercept. Send me a picture, Sai."
Kakashi
*The First Hint of Trouble*
5:32 PM KST
Kakashi had excused himself from another conversation, and was ostensibly talking to Master Sarutobi, even though he was actually speaking to the security team in his ear piece.Genma had joined them, and he was the one to check his phone for the updates from headquarters."I was afraid of that," he sighed. "It's a match."Kakashi arched an eyebrow. "Recognize him?""Remember that mission in Iwa six months ago – the assassination investigation? You and Sai were on surveillance while Tenten and I were undercover in that crappy bar.""Is that where we saw him?""It's the only place we saw him," Genma affirmed. "He didn't appear to be a member of the core group planning the assassination. He was hired in. He got out before we rounded up everyone else."Konohamaru frowned. "So what's he doing here?""That I couldn't tell you," Genma said frankly. "I can't even tell you for sure what his role was in Iwa, but I can tell you that you might want to have a medic on standby. You remember the brawl that you and Sai helped us break up that led to the gang's capture?""Clearly," Kakashi said dryly. "I also clearly remember that you were never particularly forthcoming on how the brawl started.""Well…about that…This guy started it.""Him?" Kakashi asked, eyebrows raised. "Why?""Well…" Genma rubbed the back of his head. "He didn't exactly start it, but he is why it started.""This oughtta be good," Konohamaru snorted, but Kakashi just raised his eyebrows and waited for him to continue."He may or may not have done something that led to someone else retaliating, and another someone else trying to redirect the retaliation, and then the fight broke out.""Quite the conjecture," Kakashi narrowed his eyes. "So, which someone was you, and which someone was Tenten?"Genma grimaced. "Both.""…""The guy stalked Tenten all night," Genma sighed. "She was the only girl in there not behind the bar. We were at the bar getting drinks when he started hanging all over her. She kept her cover right until he left… unfortunately right before he walked away he sort of… grabbed her ass.""…And?""She may or may not have rounded on him, and I may or may not have tried to stop her, and that may or may not have caused her to slam into someone else, who thought it was the guy behind him, which may or may not have started the fight.""And you may or may not have decided to share this with me before now because…?"Genma offered with a shrug and Kakashi sighed, "What aren't you telling me?""Nothing that you need to know in the next few hours… or possibly years.""Kakashi," Sai's voice interrupted, "It appears we might have a complication. It seems that Elder Hyūga will intercept our friend first.""I'm on my way," Neji chimed in, but a sigh slid over the line."I'm closest," Tenten muttered. "I'll make sure the Elder is alright. The other guy though? No promises."Genma and Kakashi exchanged glances.Genma cleared his throat. "About that medic…?"
Elder Hyūga
*The Opportunity to be Miserable*
5:33 PM KST
It is a well-known fact: some people are at their genetic level, miserable. Their base nature in life is irascible, irritated, and irrationally pessimistic. Their misery loves company solely in the sense that they feel all others should be at any given time just as miserable as they are.Elder Hyūga was a miserable person. He was a mean, miserable, irritable, petulant, stubborn, Old Man.He wasn't a bad person, necessarily; he did have the clan's best interests in his scrawny little heart. He was even a knowledgeable person, but the wisdom of his years had a snide, twisted bend to them that hadn't been earned by a life of hardship or betrayal, but just by observing life through his own warped kaleidoscopic view of the world. It could even be argued that Elder Hyūga didn't consciously try to make others miserable and that it was simply his natural state of being, and therefore out of his control. There was however, a glaring exception to this rule.He absolutely delighted in hating that kunoichi on Neji's team. She was a thorn in his side, and he made it a point to be one in hers. It wasn't bad enough that she was a nobody with no clan; she was neither the least bit ashamed of her lack of pedigree nor respectful of Neji's impressive one. She delighted in defying convention -and therefore him- at every turn. Oddly enough, he had no ire to spend on Lee; Lee was harmless enough, and a dedicated shinobi. But that girl on his grandson's team was insolent in the extreme. She was willful and stubborn, and petulant, and was obviously the kind of cunning kunoichi that distracted others away from their family dealings. When he had activated his Byakugan to check that everything was moving smoothly, he saw her sitting at the small, unattended bar just outside of the restricted area, and playing on her phone when she should have been tending to Hinata and Hanabi. It was with a mix of spite and smug satisfaction that he noted Neji was also headed to the restricted areas, and he thus excused himself from his conversation, determined to catch her in a flagrant flouting of duty, and perhaps ridding himself of her for once and for all. With a wicked smile, he altered his trajectory to make sure he intercepted with Neji and her simultaneously.Misery loves company, and he was absolutely going to make sure he had a witness to what he had planned.
*The Uninvited Guest*
5:35 PM KST
Sumashi looked around as the elevator door closed behind him. He'd come on board with the Five Kages about four months ago with glowing references and a fabricated identity, ensuring he would be selected to work this event. His objective was fairly simple, but it was a high risk situation if he got caught. That was why he'd secured half of his pay up front, and it was now waiting for him elsewhere. The rest would be deposited once he finished up tonight. He smiled at the thought of how he intended to spend that money, and the smile sharpened when he noticed the woman outside of the restricted area. She was sitting at the small bar, flicking idly through her phone. He allowed himself a thorough look from the floor up, taking in the view of the long, shapely legs, the curve of the waist, the swell of the breast, the bored hint of a smile, and the glitter of gold in the chestnut coils of her hair. With an impatient huff she put her phone face down on the bar, pouting prettily as she leaned over the counter to see if anyone was there."Sorry to keep you waiting," he offered, coming forward with a heavily laden tray of pitchers full of ice, "but the ice maker up here was down, so I had to go get some more.""Oh!" her eyes widened as she noticed him. "Do you need help?""I've got it," he smiled, going for affable."Those look heavy!""Awkward more than anything," he expertly swiveled the tray onto the bar before opening up the small door that let him step into the serving area behind it.Once there, he brought the pitchers through to the bar and placed them in the ice chest of the ostensibly non-working ice maker. He watched her out of the corner of his eye with a subtle smirk. He didn't know who she was, but if she was on this floor, she was connected to the family in some way. If he had to bet, she was one of the girls that management said would be coming in to personally cater to the Hyūga sisters. That meant she was both related to and not part of his mission, and therefore useful but expendable. That was his favorite kind of woman."Now then," he turned and smiled at her. "What can I get you?"
5:41 PM KST
Neji could not have just rushed out from the cocktail hour without looking suspicious. When he had managed to extricate himself, he took the precaution of proceeding at an unsuspicious pace, checking in with the Five Kage staff as he entered the lounge area of the fifth floor. It would be open to others later, but for now, only one guest was at the small bar, and (so far) there was no indication that she had attempted to forcibly subdue the suspect. In fact, she was sitting swiveled in her chair, poking at a drink with a cocktail straw. She pretended not to see him, even as she lowered one hand out of the bartender's view and made a few, quick signals. The man said something, and she smiled, placing her drink back on the bar. It wasn't until he was closer that Tenten acknowledged him."Lord Neji!" she gasped, her eyes round, and her expression surprised. "I.. I didn't expect to see you here!""Sato-san," he nodded. "Shouldn't you be with Lady Hinata and Lady Hanabi?""Lady Hinata asked me to give them a moment," she shrugged, managing to look both guilty and helpless at the same time."It's my fault," the bartender offered. "I offered her a spritzer in addition to the glass of water she asked for.""Then I'd switch to that glass of water, if I were you," Neji noted dryly before turning to the bartender. "And I'll take a scotch on the rocks.""Right away, sir," the bartender nodded, and readied their drinks. While his back was turned, Tenten quietly grabbed a second cocktail napkin and placed it in her lap. Meeting is eyes, she drummed her fingers on the table and he nodded. When the bartender handed her the water, she took it with the appropriate amount of chagrin, while Neji took his drinks with just the right note of arrogance."So," Tenten cleared her throat. "What do you think of –""So there you are!"Neji and Tenten turned to see Elder Hyūga eyeing Tenten with a smug sneer."Shirking your duties, are you?"There was a flicker of fire in her eyes that Neji hoped the bartender missed as Tenten swallowed her immediate retort for the sake of their current ruse."No, Elder," she said as evenly as she could. "Lady Hinata asked for a moment with her sister.""That's no excuse for you to have exited the restricted area," Elder Hyūga crossed his arms. "Is that not right, Neji?""I was addressing it, Grandfather," he said calmly, flicking his eyes from his grandfather to the bartender. He knew that Elder Hyūga would happily harangue his teammate, but he had issue with doing such things in front of "the help.""Well then," he narrowed his eyes at her. "See that you do. A glass of water, please," he directed to the bartender. "With ice.""Grandfather, we should-""Nevermind," he took the untouched glass on the bar. "I see you already ordered me one, Neji. Must've seen me coming, I take it?"Before Neji could reply, the old man drank half of the glass, and paused to consume an icecube he'd gulped by drinking so quickly. After that, he finished the glass and intentionally ate one of the pieces of ice."Much better," he said with satisfaction. "Most refreshing."He put the glass back down on the bar, but his hand was slightly unsteady."Perhaps a seat, Grandfather," Neji offered, noticing the armchair not far from the bar."Yes… yes perhaps that is wise," the old man agreed, a confused look on his face. "I think I am more tired today than I thought. Perhaps.. perhaps a nice cup of tea."Neji looked to the bartender with raised eyebrows."I don't have any right here," the bartender grimaced. "I'll just go to the kitchen and get some.""I'll go with you," Tenten offered. "I might need to grab his doctor while I do.""Probably better if you stay here," the bartender said a little too quickly. "Just in case.""Just in case what, Sumashi?" Tenten blinked at him. "In case you drug him again?"Sumashi's eyes widened, and he froze in place."No way out from there," Tenten continued. "Why don't you join us out here, and we'll chat."Cornered, Sumashi jumped over the half door that separated the bar area from the lounge, and raced toward the stairwell. In less than five seconds, he was flat on the ground.Tenten wandered over to the prone figure of and nudged him with the toe of her high-heeled shoe as her lips quirked into a smile."Gotcha."She gingerly plucked three gold senbon out of the crook of the man's neck with a cocktail napkin, careful to avoid the no-doubt poisoned ends."You're going to want to get him a glass of water," she flicked her eyes to his grandfather. "No ice."Neji hurried behind the bar, notifying Genma as he did so."Someone is on the way to grab him," he said as he brought a fresh bottle of water to his Grandfather, who was beginning to look dazed. "Why did he spike your water and not your drink?""He probably spiked all the drinks," she sighed, taking her original cup from the small table next to Neji's grandfather. She carefully took out an ice cube and let it drip onto her polished nails. The pale pink turned black on contact, indicating the presence of drugs. "It's something with the ice.""Clever," Neji mused, "but how would that have been effective when the other guests arrived?""He prepped three pitchers of ice and put them in the chest of the ice maker – which wasn't broken. He would have given normal ice to everyone else.""Were you a target?""Probably a potential diversion," she shrugged. "You, and the girls were probably targets, though."Neji barely had time to digest that before the elevator pinged and Genma, Sai stepped out, followed by several of Ibiki's chunin.Akamaru came bounding from the door to the restricted area, followed by Kiba."Wow," he grinned at Tenten. "Look at you all dressed up and taking out bad guys!""All in a day's work," she grinned."It appears you didn't need backup," Sai noted."Told you I had it handled," she shrugged. They all started at the dull thud of Elder Hyūga sliding out of his chair to fall on the floor. The chunin medic hurried over to help Neji while Sai turned to Tenten."Did you handle him, too?"Kiba sat on his haunches and sniffed at him and then at his glass. "I think something he drank didn't agree with him."He sniffed the air again and then looked at Tenten in puzzlement. He blinked and his grin became wicked. "Do you seriously have poisoned weaponry as a hair accessory?""Doesn't everybody?""Man, I knew I liked you," he stood with a laugh before turning to Neji."You alright, Hyūga?""Fine," he replied, "Which is more than I can say for my Grandfather.""Don't suppose we could leave him like that," Tenten muttered crossing her arms.Kiba offered "Want Akamaru to wake him up?"Tenten looked up at Neji hopefully. He narrowed his eyes at her. "No.""Spoilsport""Ugggghhh."They all looked down at Neji's grandfather who was sitting with the help of the medic and rubbing his head."What happened?" he asked groggily."We identified an intruder," Neji said in clipped tones. "Ibiki's men have come to take him away.""Oh," he nodded. "Good. That's good." He looked up at them all, and his eyes fixed on Tenten. To her shock, and possibly horror, a smile suddenly split his normally sullen features. "Well don't you look lovely?""Who?" Tenten asked incredulously. "Me?""Of course, you, my dear, you look absolutely stunning! Doesn't she, Neji?""She sure does," Kiba interjected impishly. "Right, Neji?"Neji turned to his Grandfather, dumbfounded by the expectant look on his face. Speechless, he and Tenten flicked glances at each other and then back to his Grandfather."What's the matter boy, cat got your tongue?" he laughed heartily. "Oh!" his face lit up. "A doggie!""A what?" Neji stared at his grandfather, who was now reaching out to Akamaru."You're my favorite of Hinata's teammates," the old man said, happily scratching the dog's ears."Uh, thanks?" Kiba ventured."I think he's talking to Akamaru," Genma offered."Oh my god, he's dying," Tenten breathed. She looked up at Neji. "We broke your Grandfather.""We'd better have Lady Tsunade take a look at him," Genma sighed. "Kotetsu. Izumo. Get the party crasher out of here. Kiba - we can take Elder Hyūga back to the restricted area.""I want the pretty girl to come, too!" The Grandfather said happily."Sorry!" Tenten stepped back. "I have to get back to help Hinata and Hanabi get ready for the party.""There's a party?!" The Elder asked with excitement. "I love parties!Neji stared at his Grandfather. "She's right," he muttered. "You're dying.""You can't stay?" Elder Hyūga asked, mournfully."No, sorry," she shrugged. "Don't worry. Neji is here."The Hyūga Elder frowned. "Why don't you leave," he narrowed his eyes at Neji. "Then she can stay.""She can't stay," Neji said, to Tenten's visible relief."Fine, fine," the Elder interrupted, "but the dog stays. Neji, come pet the doggie!""Looks like I'm staying, too," Kiba smirked."Now can you leave?" Elder Hyūga asked Neji. "Then she could stay!""Good news," Genma interrupted, hand to ear. "Lady Tsunade is on her way.""Oh thank god," Tenten breathed."Well, there's not so good news," Genma added.Tenten glared at him."Someone has to stay with Elder Hyūga that can access the restricted areas.""Fine. I vote Neji.""I second," Kiba chimed in."I object!" Elder Hyūga cried out standing up quickly before falling back down onto his bottom."So do I," Neji muttered."Tenten," Genma warned."His grandpa, his problem.""You have to stay, Tenten," Kakashi's voice echoed apologetically in all of their earpieces. "Just until Lady Tsunade gets there. Ibiki is coming for Sumashi, and Genma and the team have to make sure he was acting alone. Neji is going to be needed out here.""You can't be serious.""Who is she talking to?" Elder Hyūga whispered loudly to Neji."Ghosts," Kiba deadpanned."It won't be long, Tenten," he assured her. "Kiba - I will need you and Akamaru, but I have Pakkun helping right now. Stay until Tsunade comes.""Alright," Tenten sighed, "but so help me, if -!" She froze mid-threat, and slowly looked over her shoulder to find Elder Hyūga tugging on her sleeve."Are you talking to ghosts?" he whispered. "Don't worry," he assured her activating his Byakugan and taking a hold of her wrist. "I'll keep an eye out for them. Neji, you watch out, too."Tenten's eyes widened in horror as the old man went back to the couch and plopped down, yanking her after him. She perched on the very end of the sofa and looked at Neji helplessly. Kiba nodded to Akamaru who went to sit at the old man's feet, and looked over at them all expectantly."Looks like they're waiting in the lounge for now," Genma swallowed a smile. "I'll as Ko and one of the others to come out and help." When the elder began to pat Tenten's hand murmuring 'No ghosts so far,' he added, "I'll hurry."
I confess I liked the original YMBiS scene with Elder Hyūga so much, that I had to include it here, self indulgent as it may be. Coming soon: the YMBiS universe drabble series, for all of those scenes that happen, but slow down the reader. Thank you for reading!!!

Sasuke*The Pretext of Civility*
Friday, March 27th 6:07 PM KSTKonoha, The Five Kages
It would not really have been surprising if the festivities were delayed, given the circumstances, but Hyūgas didn't do delays. The main banquet area opened on time and the guests filed in encouraged by the cocktail hour to be social and in good spirits. Elder Hyūga's place setting could have been removed and a table re-configured, but Hiashi asked Hinata to consider an alternate idea. After dispatching Ko to feed two or three key people the official story as to his father's whereabouts should any question arise, Hiashi asked another Hyūga to fetch Uchiha Sasuke to Lady Hyūga and himself.Hinata made the formal request that he join them at a seat of honor, and Sasuke accepted – because those were Kakashi's instructions. He was aware that Hiashi had multiple agendas at work, but with the capture of Sumashi, he was equally as certain it was a prudent decision."Look at it this way, Uchiha," Genma's voice buzzed in his ear. "No one is going to approach you for idle chit-chat or flirting while you are seated with the family.""Oh, no doubt," Konohamaru snickered. "I overheard at least three social climbers discussing course correction for an introduction. Not even Sasuke's resting bitch face is deterring them. I bet he's trending on Ninstagram before the night's over!"And that, Sasuke supposed, was the downside to being socially reclusive; when one did finally make an appearance, it generated more interest. To not only make a social appearance, but at an exclusive clan event and to be seated next to the young matriarch of the Hyūgas? Sasuke had already of begun to steel himself against the inevitable social interest and repercussions. As much as he dreaded that unavoidable consequence of this assignment, he couldn't deny that the situation could be turned to their advantage. His presence at this event - specifically his sitting next to Hinata - implied an alliance of sorts between the Uchiha and Hyūga, which sent a message on two levels. On the surface, it could indicate anything from a business arrangement between two powerful companies, to a potential merging of two families. Sasuke understood that the speculation of the nature of their alliance would be quite the topic for gossip. This was not outside of his realm of experience; he had always been somewhat in the public eye. As much as he disliked this aspect the plan, he reluctantly recognized it had its benefits. Tomorrow there would be pictures and news articles about his presence here; in no time at all, most people in the Land of Fire would know he had attended this event.Underneath the underneath was another matter entirely. Sasuke's name carried a very different type of weight in underground circles, and it was respected almost as much as it was feared. The former student of Orochimaru, the man who killed Danzo, the sole surviving Uchiha- his reputation was fierce, and his past was draped in shadow. The general consensus was that his 'reformation' simply meant that his own darkness had been minimally contained and would now be redirected to anyone foolish enough to cross him or those to whom he was currently allied. Even those that held little respect for the man, had a healthy respect for what it meant should they take him on as an opponent.Sasuke was well aware of the multiple motivations behind Kakashi assigning him to not only provide security for Hinata, but to also be very visibly present with the young matriarch of the Hyūga clan. Despite being a potential target for this latest threat to dōjutsu users, it would give anyone with sense pause before attempting to harm those under his direct protection. He was still wondering at the situation when Hinata delicately cleared her throat."I thank you for your help in this situation," she said quietly, her voice for his ears only. "It is an honor to have you with us.""You are kind to say so," Sasuke returned, resurrecting his more mannerly responses from years of disuse. "Any word of your Grandfather?""He is under Shizune's care, and has been taken elsewhere. It sounds as if he was remarkably pleasant, all things considered."Her expression was amused, and he found his lips tipping up in spite of himself."I heard he insisted Pakkun ride with him," her smile grew. "I am rather sorry I missed it." Her eyes skated to his left, and she nodded. "Master Satutobi," she explained. "He and Konohamaru just took their seats.""I haven't seen his medic," Sasuke looked around, suddenly struck by the notion."I am sure he is here," Hinata's eyes scanned the room. "He prefers not to sit at the table and be part of discussions if he can help it.""We have something in common, then.""I suppose so," she gave a small smile before reaching for her water. Moments later, Hiashi welcomed everyone to the celebration, acknowledged key guests, and introduced Hanabi to thunderous applause.Food followed immediately after, and the room was abuzz with joyful conversation and the promise of a fantastic meal. His conversation with Hinata was pleasant and comfortably minimal, and he found himself grateful that the attention was so wholly – and rightfully- focused on Hanabi. After the meal. Hinata and Hiashi would stand with Hanabi as others approached with well wishes and introductions, while other patrons dismissed to enjoy the ongoing pleasures of the well-planned event."If you hurry," Hinata whispered, "You can slip out of here and toward one of the quieter lounges before anyone realizes you've gone.""Nonsense," he stood. "I shall be the first to pay my respects to Hanabi…and then I shall slip away.""I might envy you," she chuckled."I won't be far," he met her eyes, and her smile softened."I appreciate that. Knowing you here for Hanabi puts my mind at ease."With that, she excused herself. And in that moment, she reminded him of Itachi – because he was certain she would always put her the importance of her sister's safety first. Had she been anything approaching reckless, it might even have reminded him of Naruto."It's like he haunts me," Sasuke muttered, and prepared to be among the first to formally greet Hanabi.
Konohamaru
*The Not-Quite Escape*
7:14 PM KST
After the meal, Konohamaru waited with his Grandfather to take their turn greeting Hanabi. He raised his eyebrows when Sasuke of all people was the first in line, but Master Sarutobi simply stroked his chin and murmured, "Clever."When it was his turn, his Grandfather led the exchange of felicitations before engaging Hiashi in some conversation that let him have a moment with Hanabi. He gave her a smile. "How are you holding up?""Let's just say I am glad I have nothing scheduled for tomorrow.""I'll bet. You need a break?""Desperately," she half laughed. "But I fear that isn't an option.""Hanabi?" Hinata stepped over to her side. "There is a break in the line, and more desserts were just put out. "Why don't you take twenty minutes to catch your breath. Konohamaru," she turned to him. "Would you mind going with Hanabi to the observation area above here?"Konohamaru didn't know what to say, exactly, but some signal passed between the sisters, and Hinata gave him a tiny nod."Certainly, Lady Hyūga," he hurried to agree. "We'll be back in twenty minutes."He tentatively offered Hanabi his arm, not sure if he was supposed to or not, and was surprised when she took it. He waited until they were out of earshot to ask. "So… who are we avoiding?"Hanabi heaved a heavy sigh and half laughed. "His name is Chikara. He is a powerful business figure in the food industry, and his company is one of the main vendors for the hospital. He started out making noodles of all things, but branched into other foodstuffs. He isn't bad, really," she continued. "He is just a bit… overwhelming."The pieces fell into place for Konohamaru. "He makes you uncomfortable.""Incredibly," she admitted almost guiltily. "He seems to believe that he is irresistible to women which leads him to make odd, unsolicited, supposed-to-be-romantic gestures. Nothing sexual or lewd or unkind, mind you," she was quick to clarify. "It is how he is around pretty much all women all the time, and I know he is probably just lonely, I just…""Hey," Konohamaru held up his hands. "You don't have to justify how he makes you feel. If we run into him, we'll just keep our space. What's he look like?""You can't miss him," she snorted. "Tall. Blonde. Wears very odd western-style clothing.""With jewels all over it?""Sometimes.""And is he almost as wide as he is tall?"Hanabi winced. "Almost."Konohamaru gave a distracted nod. "Ok. Get behind me.""Behind you? Why would I…?""Ah, Lady Hanabi!" a man called out with enthusiasm, making Hanabi turn around, eyes wide. "How wonderful to see you! Oh, hello there," He stopped short when Konohamaru stepped in front of Hanabi and smoothly held out a hand."Have we met?""Don't think we've had the pleasure," he said with a smile and a firm handshake. "Sarutobi Konohamaru Pleased to meet you.""Ah, Master Sarutobi's Grandson," he nodded, shaking his hand. "Chikara. Pleased to meet you.""What brings you here?" Konohamaru asked lightly while putting a bit more pressure on the heavier man's hand. Konohamaru was a head taller, but Chikara was much, much wider."I just wanted to congratulate Lady Hanabi on her birthday," Chikara said, blue eyes darting from Konohamaru to over his shoulder trying to see Hanabi "How exciting it all is!""Very," Konohamaru agreed, releasing the man's hand, but not moving out of his way. "It has been a most exciting day for Lady Hanabi, as I am sure you can imagine.""I can imagine!" his eyes were bright. He sidestepped just enough to be able to see Hanabi. "What a milestone for you, Lady Hanabi, although not quite as large as the one in June. How lovely you look this evening!""Thank you," Hanabi had come a little closer, still staying angled behind Konohamaru, but without being rude."Oh, I nearly forgot!" Chikara moved to reach for something in his jacket, and Hanabi suddenly found herself staring at Konohamaru's back."Think very carefully about your next move, sir," he said quietly.Chikara looked up at him, startled, his blue eyes wide in confusion. He slowly removed his hand from his jacket. Konohamaru tensed, but he felt a warm hand on his back."Konohamaru," Hanabi said quietly. "I can see that it is alright."Konohamaru didn't move but he didn't leap to kill the other man either. Chikara very carefully pulled out the thin, flat piece of something and turned it around to them."M-My fiancé," he said, his voice strained. "I-I just wanted to tell Lady Hanabi about our engagement."Konohamaru relaxed ever so slightly, but he kept the other man in a firm gaze. The warm hand that now pressed on his arm was the only thing that made him look away."I can see that," Hanabi repeated, eyebrows raised, waiting for him to understand.Konohamaru blinked, waiting for his mind to catch up. She'd checked him out with the Byakugan. The man wasn't a threat."Sorry," she turned to Chikara. "It's been a long day and my friend here is just looking out for me. Is that Fuku?" she asked, redirecting the attention to the picture. Chikara beamed and gushed on about his fiancé, but kept a respectful distance.Barely a moment later, one of the Hyūgas approached them and bowed politely."Forgive me, Lord Chikara," he interrupted apologetically, "but there are some guests who are interested in meeting you. May I direct you to them?""Wonderful!" Chikara beamed. "Congratulations again, Lady Hanabi," he winked audaciously at her. "I hope you have just as much good luck as I have had when it comes time for you to find your own Princess Fuku!""Thank you," Hanabi bowed her head low. "You are most kind."Chikara eyed up Konohamaru before offering him the same smile. "Keep an eye on Lady Hanabi," he said cheerfully. "Not everyone is as honorable as I am. It is a good thing that she has you as a friend!" With that, he turned on his heel and swaggered back to the party. Konohamaru turned to see that Hanabi was still in a low bow, her hand over her face. It took a moment to realize her shoulders were shaking, and that she was using her Byakugan."He's gone," Konohamaru said dryly.Hanabi stood straight up, and burst into laughter. She gasped in giant breaths of air, and laughed a fantastic, exuberant laugh that tugged at the corners of Konohamaru's mouth."You're really heartbroken, huh?" he asked.Hanabi carefully swiped at the corners of her eyes to try to stop the tears from rolling down her cheeks. "Devastated," she gasped for air. "I may never recover.""Don't worry," he offered. "With time and good luck, someday you will find your own Princess Fuku."It was a good five minutes before Hanabi was composed enough to make the return to the party"That," she said, her voice breathy from laughter, "has to be one of the most ridiculous things I have ever seen.""Hang around Naruto some more," Konohamaru snorted. "Then we'll talk.""Thanks for stepping in," she said, looking up at him. "I appreciate you trying to buffer the situation.""Well I could hardly pass up the chance to step between you and an overly romantic noodle magnate. Now. Should we head back? Hinata did mention something about dessert.""We should," Hanabi agreed. "Besides. Any longer than twenty minutes and someone will come find us.""Considering all of those someones report to your father, I'm gonna say we need to get back now." Konohamaru held out his arm to her with a bright smile. "Shall we?""This isn't an ambush dessert, right?""Shinobi's honor. No hats, no singing, no sparklers.""Alright, then," she took his arm. "Dessert it is."

*The Just Desserts*
7:43 PM KST
Tenten was sipping on a glass of sparkling water, ostensibly listening to the chatter around her as she kept a visual on Hanabi and Hinata. Genma sidled up to her and glanced at her drink."No ice?""Not tonight," she scoffed. "What do we hear about our guest?""Don't expect to hear much tonight. Ibiki will fill us in tomorrow.""I almost feel sorry for him," Tenten's lips quirked into a smile. "But not quite.""You know, Gramps spent most of his ride with he medics asking about the pretty girl back at the party. I may have video.""I'm good for now," her eyes followed someone approaching Hinata. "I've had more than enough of him for a while. Possibly forever. Besides – I'm sure he will be back to his charmingly surly self by morning.""That is the current prognosis, yes.""You do know that you owe me big time, right?""I am aware. Figured I'd start with dessert.""Sorry that took a moment," Ino apologized, joining them. "Is here ok, or do you need me somewhere else?""Here's fine," Genma gave a nod. "Just keep a visual on the girls, and go with them if they need to go anywhere the guys can't.""Got it. Go on," she nudged Tenten. "Take a break.""Thanks," she squeezed Ino's arm. "I won't be long." She looked to Genma. "Where am I headed?""Backstage," Genma jerked a thumb over his shoulder. "Dessert will be there in five. And don't worry," he held up his hands. "I know I still owe you.""Damn straight," she handed him her glass, then to Ino, "See you in a bit."With that, Tenten made her way through the crowd and slipped into the the room that had been set aside for those keeping an eye on the Hyūgas while they got ready. When she opened the door, the first thing she saw was Neji, checking his phone."Hey," she made her way to the table set up with pitchers of water and canned beverages. "Everything okay?""Fine," he typed something before tucking his phone away. "Just checking in with the hospital in Suna.""Everyone made it there ok, right?""Yes," he reached for his water. "Everyone is fine.""Good," Tenten smiled, taking a seat. "I heard your Grandfather will recover to his cantankerous self.""Considering he skipped an appointment last month and Lady Tsunade decided he might as well keep it while he was under observation, I am certain that is the case.""Ah, well," she grinned. "It's for the best. I'm not sure I would ever get used to him actually liking me.""It was just this side of terrifying," Neji agreed. There was a quick knock on the door before Kiba opened it, and Akamaru bounded over to Tenten."Hey there, handsome," Tenten reached out to scratch his ears. "What are you doing here?""Bringing dessert," Kiba pushed in a cart with several plated desserts and a carafe of fresh coffee. "I'd say Gemna was compensating for earlier, but I am pretty certain Hinata had already arranged for this stuff to be available to us throughout the evening.""She did," Neji nodded to the assortment. "But I wouldn't put it past Genma to take credit.""True," Tenten half laughed as Akamaru nudged her for more skritches, "but he did arrange for me to take a backstage break, so I have to give him at least a little credit.""Fair," Kiba put the carafe on the table and handed her an empty mug. "I think he sent us on break because he figured Akamaru would cheer you up.""He does," she stroked his large white head fondly."What about you, Hyūga," Kiba nodded to the cart. "You joining us?""I just came back here to take some calls from Suna," Neji checked his watch. "I had better get back.""More for us," Kiba shrugged, and took a seat opposite of Tenten. "Besides," he plucked a dessert from the cart, and winked at Tenten. "We have to decide where we're meeting up for our game of pool.""Pool?" Neji blinked, flicking his eyes between Tenten and Kiba."Part of a bet," Tenten shrugged. "Loser pays for dinner.""Ah," Neji sent her an understanding look. "I'll leave you to it, then."Tenten's phone buzzed in her pocket a moment or two after the door closed behind him.'Try not to fleece the poor fool too badly. He is Hinata's teammate, after all.'Tenten smiled to herself and replied 'No promises,' (which she did not know made her team mate smile in spite of himself) and returned to sharing a pleasant conversation with Kiba.
Hanabi and Hinata
*Afterward*
10:45 PM KST
The party ended, the guests were thanked, and the Hyūga sisters were finally back at home. Hanabi sent Konohamaru a text that she got home safely, as promised, just as Ko alerted Hinata's team, Genma, Tenten, and Kakashi. Hinata sent Sasuke a text thanking him again for his help, and promising to send him an assortment of teas they'd discovered they both liked. Neji reminded Genma to keep him in the loop about Sumashi. Tenten congratulated Konohamaru on surviving his first Hyūga event and reminded him that there would be a debriefing next week. Tenten also sent Hanabi another 'Happy Birthday' text, checked in with Hinata, asked Temari if anyone in Suna needed to be incarcerated – a.k.a, was Naruto behaving, and reminded Lee that they would not be up for an early morning training session.Lee and Gai insisted on accompanying Elder Hyūga to the hospital, as they were certain Neji would have normally done. Gai reported to Genma and Kakashi throughout the evening even as Lee texted Neji and Tenten. Their last collective report was that Elder was being monitored and would soon be allowed to sleep.Neither Neji nor Tenten could formulate a reply; both sent a 'thumbs up' emoji.Freshly showered and glad to be free of any makeupor event-worthy grooming, Hanabi flopped onto the overstuffed couch, with a contented sigh."You know?" she stretched before letting her head loll to the side to face her sister. "All in all, that wasn't so bad. I thought it would be way worse.""Glad to hear it," Hinata laughed."I know it was as nice as it was because of you, Sis," Hanabi met her eyes seriously "Thank you. For everything."Hinata's smile was warm. "You're welcome. Now," she scooted closer and tucked a blanket around them both. "Post-party cookies, snacks, and movie as promised.""This makes even running into Chikara all worth it," Hanabi sighed, grabbing a still-warm cookie."Chikara?" Hinata blinked. "I thought we managed to get you away in time.""Oh, he found us," Hanabi laughed. "I haven't had a chance to tell you! We were getting some air, when…"Hanabi told Hinata about the run-in with Chikara, and was soon laughing so hard tears streamed down her cheeks. And although she didn't mention it, it did not escape Hinata's notice that 'us' and 'we' were Hanabi and Konohamaru, and that she hadn't seen her sister laugh like that in a very, very long time. The mood carried through the evening until Hanabi had drifted to sleep on her sister's shoulder, a smile still on her lips.Hinata expertly extricated herself, replacing her shoulder with pillows, and tucking the blanket around her sister."Happy birthday, Hanabi," she murmured, kissing her forehead. With that, she went no further than the adjoining loveseat, curled up, and drifted to sleep, with her heart full of gratitude, and dreams full of promise.*Somehow I left off that last section the first time I updated! Neji
*Training*
April 17
th
5:15 AM KSTKonoha, Maito Gai's Dojo
Neji had returned from Suna feeling oddly refreshed. It was not unusual for him to go between Konoha and Suna, but the newest threat to dōjutsu users coupled with the acknowledged return of Sasuke to their ranks had given a new urgency to his travels. His budding relationship with Sakura, Hinata's involvement in ANBU, Hanabi coming of age and training for the combat trials, Naruto being more Naruto than usual and in proximity to his cousin, Hiashi hinting about wanting to strengthen ties with other clans in a thinly veiled attempt to suggest Hinata marrying…. It all weighed on him and pulled his attention in different directions. In a bid for normalcy, he decided to join his team for the early morning training session that he had thought he would be unable to make. The sounds coming from the dojo were so familiar, that he felt himself (almost) smile. This was familiar. This he knew. Therefore, he was genuinely surprised to find not Lee and Tenten on the mats, but Naruto sparring with Konohamaru while Lee and Tenten watched.Lee's face lit up brilliantly as he waved him over."Neji! I didn't think you could make it!""We finished a little earlier last night than projected," he said, putting his bag against the wall and joining his teammates. "What's all this?" he pointed with his chin."Konohamaru and Naruto normally train after us," Lee turned his eyes back to the spar. "Since we thought we'd be a minus a teammate, we invited them to join us.""Naturally," Tenten added, "we gave them the chance to go first.""Naturally," Neji caught her eye and did not miss the impish look there. Tenten was not a morning person by choice; having someone else kick off the training was just fine with her."How are they doing?" Neji turned back to watch as Konohamaru blocked Naruto's kick."Standard rules," Tenten hid a yawn. "Taijutsu only. Rasengan or any technique that can take out the dojo is forbidden."They ducked as one of Konohamaru's clones soared overhead and dispelled just as a second went the other direction. Naruto almost missed the original that had been hiding behind him, barely managing to dodge the attack."Nice!" he called out as Konohamaru flipped back and reset."Almost got you that time, boss!""Almost," Naruto's grin had a feral edge to it as the others cheered on his opponent."Get 'im, Konohamaru!" Tenten cheered as Lee cried out "Youthfully done!""Traitors," Naruto called back and the spar resumed.Neji, however, remained silent. He watched Konohamaru with particular interest, and tried to remain objective."Told you he isn't a kid anymore," Tenten said quietly - now at his other side to avoid being deafened as Lee continued to yell encouragement.Neji had to admit, she had a point. Konohamaru had been an annoying pipsqueak for so long, it was strange to see him this way – or any other way than annoying and constantly following Naruto around for their stupid sexy-no-jutsu contests. It was hard to believe this over-six-foot twenty-something was that same kid.Just as Neji was about to allow that Konhamaru truly was not the same person, he shot off a less than delicate remark to Naruto who had just won the round."Except when he opens that mouth," he muttered, and Tenten shrugged."Takes time."As Naruto and Konohamaru made their way off of the mat, Lee turned to Neji. "Shall we?""Sure," Neji inclined his head.Naruto, Konohamaru, and Tenten cheered them on as they spared, each taking turns with different styles. Gai had assigned them forms and restrictions in later years, forcing them to become more fluid opponents. It was almost like a dance, although Neji was sure his several weeks away would mean he would not feel like he had been dancing. When they finished, Naruto and Tenten headed to the mat, surprising Neji."We've been meeting while you were gone," Lee explained. "Naruto is having Tenten use her wooden melee weapons today. They are tied 1-1 and this is their last round. She is using her bo staff."Neji watched Tenten test the weight of her staff before leaning it back against the wall with a satisfied nod. She shed her warm-up clothes, carefully folding the bottoms and jacket and placed them to the side. It was a familiar sight; she always wore them between fights, even when it was warm as it currently was in the dojo area. She bounced up and down a few times on the balls of her bare feet and shook out her arms, rolling her neck and loosening up. Neji watched her with the practiced eye of a team mate. She had a determination in her eyes that he recognized; Tenten hated to lose, and they were tied. Naruto was in for a good match."Excellent, Tenten!" Lee called out to her enthusiastically. "It is important to warm up!""I'll say it is," Konohamaru mumbled appreciatively.Neji looked sharply over at the younger operative before following his gaze back to where his team mate alternating between bouncing on the balls of her feet and stretching. Neji narrowed his eyes at her.Her black athletic shorts molded to her legs, stopping right below her hips. The black tank-top came barely to her ribs and her short off-the-shoulder purple crop top was surprisingly feminine for someone that was a walking arsenal. He tensed and the corners of his mouth moved almost imperceptibly downward. He'd seen her in this training outfit probably a hundred times, but today he disliked it.Tenten retrieved her bo staff and Naruto nodded to her, grabbing a couple of kunai. After a few trunk rotations with her bo staff across her shoulders, she asked Naruto, "You ready?""Yeah," he stuffed one more kunai into his pouch and came out with one in each hand. "You sure you only want that one weapon," he asked uneasily. "Not like you to risk being unarmed."Tenten sized him up. "One," she held up one finger, "good luck disarming me. Two," she held up the second, "what makes you think I've only got one weapon?"Naruto stared at her, raking his eyes up and down her several times searching for additional weaponry before he noticed her arched eyebrow, and beyond her, a confident Lee, a smirking Konohamaru, and a glowering Neji. "Done checking me out?" she asked shifting her weight and putting her hand on her hip."What! Yeah, I mean no – I mean –I wasn't-!" he stammered."Good." She cut him off and made her way to the center of the floor. Her demeanor shifted to competitive and her stance to deadly. "Then let's go."Relieved, Naruto instantly joined her. Some imperceptible signal passed between them, and they both sprang forward, clashed weapons and sprang apart again. Naruto sliced wildly at where her head had been but she dropped down and swept for his legs with her staff. He had to let his momentum carry him forward and he flipped over her, leaving his back to her for a fraction of a second. She had already turned, though, and slapped a hand between his shoulder blades, catching him off guard and allowing her to spring back. He looked over his shoulder and saw the tag on his back, yanked it off and tossed it to one side as he jumped to the other. It exploded in a harmless puff of smoke."Where did you-?" he stared at her, but he didn't have time for questions. She was already charging at him again, and he felt himself grin. They exchanged blow after blow; Naruto with two kunai, Tenten with her staff that she could break apart and straighten at will. Naruto grabbed her staff to dodge and jumped over it, sending a clone behind her. She sent a kunai she had pick pocketed from his leg pouch on her last pass flying over her shoulder with deadly precision and without looking."We said no clones!" she called out as the clone poofed out of existence."Sorry," he replied ducking as her staff swept over his head. "I forgot!""Sure you did," Tenten grunted. She twirled the staff in front of her, swiping at him and just as quickly maneuvering it behind herself to block his every blow."Tenten is very youthful today!" Lee cheered enthusiastically."Is that what you'd call it?" Konohamaru asked idly. "My first thoughts were somewhere between 'badass' and 'scary as hell.'" He looked over her appreciatively. "Pretty amazing to watch, though."Neji tightened his jaw as he glanced at Konohamaru. It seems that the teachings of Jiraiya lived on. "Don't you have somewhere else to be?" he asked coldly."No-PE!," Konohamaru popped the "P" emphatically and took out his water bottle. "I'm slated to be in this training session for at least another hour."Neji narrowed his eyes at the younger agent who was completely unaffected by it.They watched as Tenten and Naruto clashed again and again; kicking, spinning, flipping, and punching. Konohamaru winced when Naruto slammed against her staff, but she allowed it to collapse and moved to the side, using the momentum to throw him off, twirling it behind her and straightening it back to one piece. Neji looked at the clock; they had been at it nonstop for almost 15 minutes and neither seemed to be gaining an advantage."Go Tenten!" Lee cried, and they both turned to see her spinning toward him, rotating her staff hypnotically then feinting high so that Naruto would duck, catching Naruto's back leg and flipping him onto his back before rushing forward, the end of her staff less than an inch from his throat. To his credit, Naruto didn't even flinch. He was actually too stunned. She held the strike position for a moment longer before retracting the staff and holding her hand out to him. "Good spar," she smiled."Yeah," Naruto grinned, taking her hand. "Real good."She stood for a second to catch her breath, sliding her staff to her side and leaning with one hip out. "Why do we let Lee talk us into turning down the air in here," she muttered, as one of Naruto's clones brought them each a towel. She took it gratefully and wiped her forehead, face, and neck. Neji didn't miss any of the appreciative gazes. Tenten was narrow hipped and lean – more athletically built than the other girls. She was bustier than Sakura, but not as curvaceous as Ino. She was darker than the other girls, too. She swiped the towel around her abdomen and down her long legs before going to the barre to stretch out."Well done," Lee slapped Naruto on the back. "Shall we start?""Gimme a minute, Lee," Naruto said between slurps of water. "Break for ten?""Certainly," Lee beamed. "Come, Neji," he motioned to his teammate. "I am anxious to hear about your time away." Lee trotted over to where Tenten was pouring cool water into the towel before swiping at her face, arms, and neck."Great job out there," Lee enthused as Tenten put her towel to the side."Thanks, Lee," she reached for her water. "You guys mind if I stretch out while we catch up?""Far be it from us to interrupt your routine," Neji sat on the floor"So?" Lee dropped next to him. "Tell us about Suna!""Yeah," Tenten, who stood her back to the corner, dropped over at the waist with her arms folded to help pull her forward. "How was everything?""Fine," Neji shrugged as she stood and stretched her arms over her head, the full expanse of her defined abdomen and narrow waist visible. She dropped her arms and swung one across her chest and then the other, stretching them out."Hinata travel ok?" she asked, eyebrows raised."Yes," he nodded. "It was a much better flight this time." He detailed his time in Suna as they each took their turns stretching out. Lee alternated between pushups and handstands and push-up-handstands. Tenten took to the barre - stretching to touch the floor on either side of her planted leg and then back to the leg on the barre. She switched legs and repeated. They had been team mates so long, that this was not unusual to any of them."We should go for dinner," Lee exclaimed.Tenten stood, scooping up her towel from earlier and wiping her face. "I can't tonight, Lee, I have plans. Does tomorrow work?"Neji arched an eyebrow. "Plans?""Yes, Neji, plans," she reached for her water bottle. "As in things to do that are scheduled ahead of time, and aren't work related.""What youthful activity will you be engaging in tonight, Tenten?" Lee asked, running in place.Tenten smiled at him. "I have to teach someone it's a bad idea to play me in pool," she grinned."Lee – I'm good to go," Naruto called over to them, and Lee excused himself.Neji slid Tenten a glance."Is your opponent who I think it is?""Kiba," she affirmed. "In fact," she checked the time. "I might duck out early. Genma wants me to report in, and I have just enough time to clean up and talk some smack before getting to work.""Charming," Neji drawled."Don't hate the player, Hyūga," she winked. "Hate the game.""What does that even mean?""Ask Konohamaru to explain it to you," she grabbed her bag and gave him a cheeky smile. "See you later, Neji."Neji watched her go. You'd have to be blind or dead not to notice and appreciate her athletic grace or the view as she walked away. Neji was absolutely none of those things, but he was more preoccupied by his teammate's love of all things competitive.Later, when he had to deliver a report from Suna to Shino, he found Kiba chatting with his teammate in his office. Neji recognized the bento box between them as one of Hinata's."Snacks from Suna," Kiba said nodding to the box. "From your cousin. You want some?" Neji politely declined and Kiba grinned while he picked out a small pastry. "Your loss, man. Shino and I always knew we had the best kunoichi on our team, didn't we, Shino?""That is correct. What brings you down to the lab, Neji?""I brought this for you," Neji handed him the scroll. "I was hoping to discuss some of the information with you, if you have some time."Shino looked at Kiba. "I have some time now.""Yeah," Kiba dusted his hands off on his jeans. "I was heading out anyway. Oh, wait!" his eyes lit up. "Don't know if Tenten told you, but I'm taking her on in pool tonight. Any pointers?""Only if you need advice on how to accept defeat with dignity." He paused before adding, "You do know she is hustling you, right?""Of course she is," Kiba grinned a slow, easy grin. "No way is a girl like that is not a pool shark. But losing means I get to take her to dinner again; so, I win.""And if you win?""I still win – she takes me to dinner. Not that I'll let her pay, of course," he shrugged.Neji raised his eyebrows. "Then why not just ask her back out for dinner?"Kiba's grin grew wider. "Where is the fun in that? Man, do you even know your team mate? She jumps at the chance for friendly competition and bets and hates to lose. She might turn down dinner, but she'll never turn down a challenge. Besides, have you ever watched a girl play pool, Hyūga? I mean really watched?" He asked Neji before leaning back in his chair with his hands behind his head and giving an appreciative sigh. "Best sight around. Totally worth getting beat at the game."Shino hmphed, preventing Neji from having to make a reply. "You are quite good as well. Who is to say you won't win?"Kiba shrugged. "I already can't lose. I just have to keep the game going long enough to enjoy the view."Neji was spared a reply by Shizune, who came in to speak with him. Agreeing to meet with Shino later that afternoon, he left and Kiba reached for another pastry with a triumphant grin.Shino sighed. "That wasn't very wise, Kiba. Why? That is because, you intentionally tried to annoy Neji with your insinuations about your plans with and designs toward his teammate.""I know," Kiba's grin was positively wolfish. "Fun, wasn't it?"
Hanabi
*Casual Encounters*
10:30 AM KSTKonoha, The Sarutobi Residence
"What a nice surprise!" Kurenai greeted Hanabi and put her coat and scarf on a chair. "You're freezing!" she gasped as she brushed against Hanabi's hand. "Hurry in and we will have some tea.""Thank you," Hanabi smiled. "It is colder than I thought it would be today.""What brings you by?""Hinata had some things to drop off to Master Sarutobi, so I brought them over for her. She also had some teas for you," Hanabi reached into her bag before draping it on the chair with her coat. "They are from Suna. She wanted you to see which ones you liked so she could bring you those back on her next trip.""So, she will be going back?""Yes," Hanabi sighed. "She wants to finish the tour. Luckily Master Sarutobi and Yori will be with her." Hanabi's grin was crooked. "And people say I'm the stubborn one.""You are," Kurenai chuckled, "It just so happens that you are one of several. Come on through to the kitchen."Hanabi followed, looking around."Where are the kids?""With Asuma," Kurenai filled the kettle and set it on the electric base. "Shōgi has been working with him on something."Kurenai had no sooner poured the tea when their quiet conversation was interrupted by something that sounded suspiciously like an explosion from the vicinity of the training area. Both women startled and listened, before Hanabi tentatively offered, "Shōgi?"Kurenai sighed. "Sounds like it."The sound of a door opening and closing was followed by heavy footsteps and laughing in the hall."Um, Aunt Kurenai?" Konohamaru ducked in the kitchen with the youngest on his shoulders. "You might want to step outside for a minute."Kurenai glanced at Hanabi who waved her away."I get it.""I'll get their snack ready," Konohamaru offered. "That might speed things up."Kurenai nodded, and hurried to the children."C'mon, you," he poked at his cousin. "Let's put you in your bouncer while we get the snacks put together."Hanabi watched him put the toddler in the bouncer where he proceeded to happily bounce to whatever music it played before coming back into the kitchen."Sorry to interrupt like that, Hanabi," he gave an apologetic smile as washed his hands. "How have you been?""I am well," she answered. "But it sounds like Kurenai is going to need all of the help she can get. May I help with the snack?""Sure," he toweled off his hands. "Aunt Kurenai already has most of the stuff ready. We were going to make fruit salad today.""I can help," Hanabi offered, and joined him at the sink to wash her hands. "Does the fruit need to be washed?""We did that earlier," he pulled out a cutting board and two knives. "If you can start with the fruit, I'll get their cups and everything ready and join you."In moments, Hanabi was working her through a variety of fruits, pleasantly at home with this sort of kitchen work."So what is Shōgi working on these days?" she asked, her knife moving quickly against the cutting board."He has a fascination with exploding tags, lately." There was another loud burst of noise. "And gunpowder.""Ah," she hid a smile. "That explains it.""It is never a dull moment when babysitting, that's for sure. You never quite know what Shōgi will get into.""Interesting," she said, adding strawberries to the large bowl. "I can't say he's ever given me any trouble. In fact," she added airily, "I believe I am currently his favorite babysitter.""And he says I'm the most fun," he grinned as he filled the last of the kids' cups. "So, I think you have some competition for the title."Hanabi stiffened at the surge of old insecurities. She knew what people said about her; was spoiled, stuck up, uptight, opinionated, and all kinds of other things – none of which went with being "fun." On the other hand, Konohamaru was all at ease, and he trained under Naruto. He was probably on the top of everyone's 'Invite to party' list. He'd even gotten invited to her parties, and would most likely enjoy the stupid thing, because he was probably one of those people that just had a good time no matter where they were."There's no competition," she said coolly, masking the irrational hurt she felt at being reminded, however unintentionally, that she was not fun. "I'm his favorite. He said so.""Well, Shōgi never lies, so if that is what he said, then it must be true," he conceded, watching her out of the corner of his eye. He waited a beat before adding, "He is mad I got to go to your birthday party, by the way.""He would have been bored to tears," Hanabi tsked, slicing an apple with a little more force than was strictly necessary."I wasn't," Konohamaru shrugged. "I had a good time with you. I mean, I didn't find my own Princess Fuku," he sighed dramatically, "but it was still a good time."Hanabi narrowed her eyes at him, looking for any hint of deception."Really?"His smile was slow. "Really."Hanabi considered this, and mentally revisited the party. "I guess…I guess all in all it wasn't so bad.""I almost had to carry you after we ran into Chikara because you couldn't stop laughing.""Alright," she smiled, trying to suppress an errant giggle. "I admit it. I had fun.""There you go," Konohamaru nudged her. "Just don't tell Shōgi that, ok? I'm in the doghouse as it is."The sound of the kids tumbling back in the house broke the silence, and Hanabi refocused on her task with a slight blush. "Deal."
Asuma
*When Opportunity Knocks*
Asuma trailed Kurenai and his (mostly) unharmed children into the house, wincing as his eye began to swell closed. Shōgi had a bandage on his cheek and singe marks on his clothes, but was rather pleased with himself and his latest round of 'experiments,' which made Asuma think it was high time Shikamaru spent time with the boy.A chorus of "Hanabi!" went up as the kids rounded into the kitchen and swarmed the girl. She laughed and she reached down to hug and kiss each of them, ruffling Shōgi's hair until he stepped away blushing and jamming his hands in his pockets in a posture very similar to the older cousin idolized."It is good to see you all," Hanabi beamed."We've got your snack ready," Konohamaru added. "Hurry and wash up before Hanabi and me eat all of your food."The younger children hurried off to wash their hands with gleeful shrieks while Shōgi sized up his cousin. "I didn't know you knew Hanabi.""We bonded over getting your snack ready," Konohamaru shrugged."Actually," Hanabi interjected in that way that made Kurenai meet Asuma's eyes. "You could settle a bet for us, Shōgi." At his raised eyebrows, she continued. "Who's your favorite babysitter."Shōgi frowned looking between them. Finally he admitted, "You are. But Konohamaru lets us get away with more."Hanabi gave a triumphant "told you so!" while Konohamaru turned to Shōgi with a mock gasp of indignation."Bro! That is totally against cousin code!""But it's true," Shōgi flushed. "And she asked – and we aren't allowed to lie!" He looked up at his dad, his eyes wide with worry. "It's never bad stuff – he can still babysit us, right?""Mm, I don't know," Asuma rubbed his chin. "Sounds like Konohamaru should have supervision.""Maybe Hanabi can help," Shōgi offered, trying for damage control. "Then if he messes up, she can fix it."A strange sound – suspiciously like a snorted laugh – came from Hanabi, but Asuma kept his eyes on his son."Your suggestion is that Konohamaru should babysit you… and Hanabi should babysit Konohamaru?"Unsure if this was some kind of grown-up trap, Shōgi looked between his parents. "Yes….?"Well then," Asuma clapped his hands. "What are you doing next Saturday, Konohamaru?""Uh…" Konohamaru rubbed the back of his neck. "I- don't think-""Yeah," Hanabi chimed in, innocently. "What are you doing next Saturday, Konohamaru?""Well – I've got, I mean -""What's the matter, Konohamaru?" she raised her eyebrows in question, as an almost-smile tugged at her lips. "Worried I'll send you to bed with no dessert?""What? No, it's just –""Well, I'm free," she said with finality. "What time?"Asuma looked to Kurenai. "Six?""Six works for me," she shrugged."Then that's settled!" Asuma grinned. "Kids, finish up your snack, and then you can show Konohamaru and Hanabi your new training area!"The children chorused an excited "Yeah!" and as soon as they were able, dragged the two younger adults out of the room. Squeals of laughter indicated that Konohamaru had scooped up at least one more of his cousins, while Hanabi must have grabbed another.Asuma reached down and took a cup of tea and sipped it calmly. "That went well.""I hope you know what you are doing, Asuma," Kurenai said, reluctantly, still looking toward the doorway and listening to the raucous sound of her kids dragging their victims down the hall."First, we are having a quiet cup of tea for a change. Then, in a little more than a week, I'm leaving our kids with the only two people that might have the skill, energy, and stamina to watch all of our kids at the same time, and be able to call in the entire Hyūga clan and/or ANBU level backup if needed, while I take my wife on a date for the first time in over a year."Kurenai looked up to him in surprise. "Has it been that long?""Ah," he smiled wryly. "I was about to call in one of the Nara's for tactical support. It shouldn't be this difficult to spend time alone together.""We do have five children," she pointed out."And I love every one of them," he wrapped an arm around her waist, "Shōgi, the Twins, and the Little Boys, but they can do without their parents for one evening."A loud crash came from somewhere near the training area, and he winced. "Alright," he amended. "Make that we can use a break for one evening.""Only one?" Kurenai mumbled.Asuma laughed. "Depends. Last time we took more than one night off, we ended up with five kids instead of four.""Let's just start with dinner," she said quickly. "One night can't hurt."Another crash. She winced."I think…"
The Team Guy/Naruto/Konohamaru sparring scene is an homage to the Shippuden ending #15; the song is U can do it by Domino. I loved that scene in the original, and revamped it. Hope you enjoyed!

Neji
*Taking stock*
Tuesday, April 21st 7:42 AM KSTKonoha Huyga hospital/Neji's office
Neji unlocked his office with a wince.Lee had been so enthused by Naruto and Konohamaru's 'Youthful display last week,' he invited the pair to join them for training again that morning. Neji knew there were not enough hot showers and Hyūga remedies in the world to completely prevent him from being sore after going head to head with Naruto, but even he was surprised at his achiness."Geez, you move like an old man," Tenten complained as she followed him in."And you badger like an old woman," Neji muttered, flicking on the lights."An old woman who left at the same time you did, and yet still managed to arrive at the same time as you, and with coffee, no less," she tutted at him."You also managed to get out of sparring with Naruto.""I believe you mean 'was clever enough to avoid sparring with Naruto,' and 'thank you, Tenten, you are the most amazing teammate ever.""Thank you," he took the coffee she handed to him."I shall infer the rest," she said loftily. "I am feeling magnanimous since I beat Kiba in pool this weekend –""-surprising no one-""-and kindly agreed to take him on again this week.""So, you are using him for free dinner?""Maybe," Tenten grinned wickedly."And he is using you for… entertainment?" Neji watched her over his coffee cup, thinking abut Inuzuka's more unsavory comments last week. In retrospect, Kiba was probably trying to irritate him, and since he had survived the experience, Neji had to presume he had not acted poorly to Tenten."If you are asking me if I had a good time, yes. Kiba is good company. If he had been disrespectful Tsume probably would've killed him before I had to lift a finger – but we had a good time.""Glad to hear he was a gentleman.""I didn't say that," Tenten blinked innocently. "I said we had a good time."At Neji's frozen expression, she laughed."I'm kidding, Neji. You'd better lighten up if you want to survive Hanabi's security detail. Ninety percent of what Konohamaru says will probably want to make you kick his ass, and he'll only deserve it maybe thirty percent of the time. Which," she continued when he would have interrupted, "Hanabi can handle.""You're hopeless," Neji grunted."Right back at you," she winked. "I'm going to go check in at the armory, and then see if Genma has any news about our party crashing friend. One of us will check back in with you.""I will be here," he glanced at the clock. "I am hoping we hear something more about Anko's team. Ranka is able to stay conscious for longer lately; Inoichi and Genma and Tsunade are looking into it.""I heard that," she said, her demeanor shifting to serious. "Hinata told me she is still working with Master Sarutobi to see if there is a way to learn more about Tokuma through that scroll he left her.""I suspect that jutsu is sealed, but Master Sarutobi is one of the greatest jutsu masters of our time. If anyone can figure out a way to do it, it is him."Tenten's watch buzzed against her wrist, and she checked the message."That's the armory. I'll check in with you the minute I know something.""Thank you."With a quick smile, Tenten left his office, leaving him to think.Neji sank into his chair, sipping meditatively at his coffee.Tokuma's absence was a sobering reminder of all that faced his family. It was even more sobering when he learned that Sasuke agreed to allow the Sharingan to be studied.Tsunade asked that both he and another Hyūga be observed simultaneously, in the hopes of learning more through what they knew about the Byakugan. Hinata had volunteered. Since Sakura ended up taking over the task, Neji suspected she was grateful. As for Neji, he had his own reasons to be grateful. His relationship with Sakura was in the nascent stages, and he was not fool enough to think that Sasuke's return would have no effect. Admittedly, their relationship was unhurried (not glacial, as he heard Hanabi grumble to Hinata), but it worked for them. Neither had much in the way of time, and both had plenty to attend to that was more pressing than the business of courting.Still, for all of the inconvenience (and the fact he did not care for Sasuke) Neji had to admit (begrudgingly) that the Uchiha's involvement was not a wholly disadvantageous event. He had navigated Hanabi's party far better than anyone thought he would, and he and Hinata appeared to get along well. That was hardly surprising, really – Hinata got along with everyone. However, she was more at ease than Neji had thought she would be. When he had said as much to Hinata, she had offered,"Maybe that is because the Sasuke you are thinking of isn't the one I know."When he'd raised his eyebrows, she'd smiled gently and added, "People do change after University, Neji."He'd conceded her point, even if he did not give the Uchiha nearly as much credit as Hinata did. However: they key thing he had to remember was that personalities aside, having Sasuke on the front lines to protect his cousins – and invested because of a threat to his own dōjutsu- was hardly something of which to be dismissive. There were very few shinobi of his caliber; his cousins were in good hands."Better him than the Uzumaki," he muttered to himself, going through his paperwork. If Neji had to deal with Konohamaru and Naruto on a regular basis, he might seriously consider a covert operation to relocate them to Suna until the threat passed. At least Gaara was quiet. He allowed himself a moment or two to indulge in the idea – he could work at the hospital in Suna, as could Sakura. The girls could be kept safe in the Suna branch of ANBU…It was a tempting daydream, but the logistics would never work. No, Neji was currently where he needed to be and working with the people with whom he needed to work. Satisfied with his ruminations, he sat down to work, and waited to hear from Genma.
Hanabi
*Grounds for Thought*
Saturday, April 25th 10:12 AM KSTKonoha, Grounds for Thought café
Konohamaru contacted Hanabi the same evening he'd seen her at his Uncle's house.
We just challenged Shogi with two babysitters. We need to talk strategy.
Bemused and amused, Hanabi agreed to meet with him at a local coffee shop. The brisk spring air was fresh and full of promise, and her heart hummed with anticipation. After having a lavish birthday party, a stop at a quirky coffee joint might seem like nothing special, but to Hanabi, who secretly craved the normalcy of these experiences, it was one of the most exciting things planned for her week. She wasn't far from the door when it swung open and she was met with what was becoming a familiar smile."C'mon – get in here where it's warm," Konohamaru urged. Hanabi gave an appreciative nod and hurried forward, burrowing her head into her scarf and collar to evade the chill of the early spring air. When she stepped in, warmth washed over her, as well as the inviting smell of tea and coffee and baked goods. She followed Konohamaru to the counter."Didn't you order, yet?" she asked, glancing to a table where she saw a familiar backpack and jacket."Time for a refill," he pulled punch card and some money out of his pocket. "I came early to do some studying." He nodded to the large menu boards over the counter, listing out any number of custom beverages and snacks."I don't even know where to start," she blinked in awe."Let's ask the expert," Konohamaru shrugged. He referred her to the man behind the counter, who after asking her a series of odd and seemingly irrelevant questions, stroked his chin, adjusted his thick, black glasses, and set about (presumably) making her a drink. Konohamaru carried their tray to the table and held her seat out for her. He then shuffled his papers away, put their drinks and snacks in front of their respective seats, and returned the tray to the guru behind the counter. Hanabi looked around, with what she hoped was nonchalance. There was a 360°-stand-alone fireplace in the middle of the room and their table was a comfortable distance from it. She noted that they were in a corner of sorts, but had an excellent view of exits, restrooms, and everything else. She smirked to herself. Did Konohamaru seat them strategically on purpose, or was it just second nature at this point? He slid into his seat across from her. "So, I have good news and bad news," he said handing her several brown paper napkins."Oh?" she wrapped her fingers around the warm mug and inhaled the tantalizing smell of chocolate."The good news is that Uncle Asuma called me. The kids spent time with Tsume, and had such a great time – wait, scratch that – Tsume had such a great time with the kids, that she invited over for this weekend."Hanabi blinked broadly. "All by herself?"Konohamaru shrugged."That is…" Hanabi tried to think of a word."Insane?" Konohamaru sipped his drink. "I agree. It would be different if Hana was still around; she was always good at helping keep Tsume focused.""She was nice," Hanabi said fondly. "I haven't seen her in forever. Not since she moved away. So," she took a slow sip and was pleasantly surprised at the rich burst of cinnamon under the cream. "What is the bad news?""Shōgi," Konohamaru said flatly. "He refused to stay."Hanabi put her drink down and watched the lazy vapors of steam float and dissipate in the air between them. "Well, that isn't such a big deal, is it?" she focused on her mug. "I could babysit him myself if it comes down to it," she offered, ignoring the twinge of disappointment somewhere in her stomach. "It makes more sense, all things considered.""That makes no sense," Konohamaru said flatly. "Besides - that would be where the 'bad news' part comes in. Shōgi not only refused to stay with Tsume and the others, he demanded we hold to the original agreement – or at least a modified version of it.""Modified, how?""He wants a sleep over, for starters," Konohamaru ticked items off on his fingers. "No parents. Movies. Pizza. Late night. That is my specialty.""Sorry I'll miss it.""That's the kicker." he grinned. "He wants you there, too.""Oh," she arched an eyebrow. "And In what universe does he think Hyūga Hiashi will permit a sleepover with just the three of us?" Hanabi leaned forward with a conspiratorial whisper. "I'll give you a hint. It's not this one.""No kidding," Konohamaru chuckled. "Shōgi knows that, and his suggestion got as far as Uncle Asuma saying 'nice try.' I think it was part of his strategy, though," Konohamaru took a bite of brownie and chewed thoughtfully."How so?""Well," Konohamaru said thickly before downing some of his drink and starting over. "Well, I think he made the most unreasonable request he could, so that negotiating for you to stay as long as you would normally stay, and then essentially still getting a solo pizza party and sleep-over with no parents until the morning would seem like nothing." Konohamaru shrugged. "It's just a theory, though.""Sound logic," Hanabi allowed. "Well the bad news isn't so bad, then" she shrugged. "I guess that is what Kurenai meant when she said that I'd only have two kids to look after. "Konohamaru looked surprised. "When did you see Aunt Kurenai? And is one of the other kids coming?""Hinata and I had lunch with her yesterday," Hanabi sipped her drink. "And I'm looking at the other kid.""Oh, ha, ha," Konohamaru laughed flatly."Still," Hanabi leaned back in her chair with a small laugh. "We should have a strategy in place. Shōgi is a handful.""Absolutely," he affirmed. "Maybe moreso now than before, because we will have Shōgi's undivided attention.""You sound nervous," Hanabi arched an eyebrow."No, I sound apprehensive, and if you aren't, you don't know my cousin."Hanabi gave a modified version of the Hyūga derisive snort. "It's still two against one.""Not going to cop out on me, then?" Konohamaru teased. "Now's your last chance.""I don't go back on my word," Hanabi said coolly.Konohamaru was going to answer, but he stopped when he saw the familiar approaching figure of his roommate. He flicked Hanabi a 'we'll come back to this' look and nodded a greeting to his friend."Hey," Inari said with an easy smile. "Udon and Moegi sent me ahead; they had to finish up some group work." His eyes drifted to Hanabi, who had slipped back into her 'polite' mode."Hanabi, right?" he asked her. "I think we had a class together.""We did," she nodded. "Resource management. You did quite well, as I recall.""So did you," he grinned and nodded to the chair next to her. "Is that seat taken?"Hanabi shook her head, and Inari plopped his backpack on the chair before hanging his coat on the back. He was a shade shorter than Konohamaru, but he was broad chested. He absently shoved his sleeves up, revealing strong, well-muscled forearms. "Either of you need anything?" he asked, nodding his head to the counter."No, thank you," Hanabi said with a small smile, and Konohamaru shook his head."I'm good, man."Inari looked to the door. "Rest of the gang is here," he said mildly. "You two want the usual?" he called over his shoulder.A "Sure" and a "Yeah, thanks," came from Udon and Moegi respectively, and Inari headed up to the counter while the other two shook out of their coats."Back for introductions in a second," Udon said with a quick smile, and Moegi followed. "Same!" They hurried over to where Inari had placed their orders so they could pay individually. Hanabi kept her mask firmly in place but there was a longing in her heart. She wondered what it would be like to have friends that you knew so well and saw so often that if you had a 'usual' order somewhere they knew about it. It was a fleeting thought, and she hid her moment of introspection by taking another sip of her warm beverage.Konohamaru glanced around the room, busily cataloging details. There weren't many people there, but he had been told ahead of time that there was still another ANBU or two keeping tabs from a distance. He stopped cataloging everything when Inari slid a tray onto the table, and started divvying up the contents."So, Hanabi," he sat comfortably in his chair. "Nice to finally meet you, officially. Since my roommate is being rude," he shot Konohamaru a mock-offended look, "I'm Inari," he looked over to the other two."Udon," he half waved from his end of the table."Moegi," the other girl grinned before elbowing Konohamaru. "Udon, Konohamaru, and I were all a genin squad. You'd think we'd be used to his bad manners."Konohamaru nudged Moegi back. "Very funny," he narrowed his eyes, but his air was playful."So what's up?" Inari asked as he offered her a cookie from what was apparently a communal plate. "Come up with a way to keep Shōgi entertained, yet?"Konohamaru glanced at Hanabi who was carefully taking one of the smaller cookies on the plate with a polite murmur of thanks and flash of a smile."Still working on it," he said vaguely."Good luck with that," Moegi grinned. "Last I heard, even Shikamaru had a time outwitting him.""Hanabi's dealt with Shōgi loads of times," Konohamaru shrugged. "Between the two of us we'll come up with something for tonight.""Good luck, just the same," Udon offered before sneezing into a tissue. "Allergies," he explained with a sniff.Konohamaru rolled his eyes. "Thanks for the vote of confidence, guys. What would I do without you?""You'd still be wearing goggles, for one." Moegi smirked into her latte."Goggles?" Hanabi asked. She cocked her head at Konohamaru. "Why did you wear goggles?""Get comfortable, Hanabi," Inari leaned back in his chair. "Udon, Moegi? The genin days, please."
Tenten and Kiba
*Hussle*
6:45 PM KSTKonoha, Snookered billiards hall and restaurant
Tenten watched Kiba circled the table, eyes on the felt and deciding what shot to take. She was incredibly competitive, but she also loved a good challenge. She appreciated that Kiba turned out to be excellent competition, and provided her with a great game of pool.He lined up his shot."Don't you dare.""Why?" he leaned over sliding the cue back and forth as he gauged the trajectory. "'Fraid this is the end?""Hardly," she snorted. "We both know this shot," she outlined another option, using her cue as a giant pointer "is much better, and that if you miss this one – which you probably will – it's a terrible shot, I am going to clean up and win."Kiba stood and considered her."I'm perfectly capable of kicking your ass on my own, Inuzuka," she put a hand on her hip. "Play the game to win or don't play."Kiba's smile was slow and sure. With a shrug he said, "Suit yourself." He was solids – he cleared the 3, the 7, and the five before sinking 8-ball for the win. "Like that?""Just like that," she grinned. "Fair's fair – dinner is on me. We're going to have to have a rematch, though – you know that, right?"Kiba glanced at the clock. "Tell you what. Let's grab dinner now, because we are going to have to call it an early night. Raincheck on the rematch.""Fair," she said with a slow smile. "I kinda can't believe you won.""I can't believe you're not mad."Tenten laughed, and crossed to take his pool cue. "I hate losing, but it isn't so bad when the other person is good at the game. Besides," she looked him over, "the view was pretty good." Kiba's mouth dropped open, and she laughed before reaching up to close it. "I'll go get us a table."He watched her put their cues away and saunter back to the restaurant area, pausing to look over her shoulder, and putting a hand on her hip while she raised her eyebrows. "Coming?" she asked.Kiba's smile was slow, but wolfish. "Absolutely."
Hanabi and Konohamaru
*Lessons in Strategy*
7:45 PM KSTKonoha, the Sarutobi residence
Shōgi had demanded a full report of all activities from the party. Anticipating this, Hanabi handed him at tablet with insider photos and explained who everyone was, and where they came from. When she and Konohamaru began to retell their encounter with Chikara, he began to dart looks between the two of them suspiciously. He kept quiet, though, and got in his training and sparring and playing that he usually got with Hanabi, and pizza and movies that he usually got with Konohamaru.Hanabi was in the corner of the couch, legs tucked up.Shōgi was backed into the opposite corner, propped on a couple of pillows, half watching the movie, and half watching Hanabi watch the movie.Konohamaru sat on the floor, his back to the couch, but between them both. Now and then, he'd tag Shōgi's leg and they'd smirk triumphantly at some scene or say a line to each other, or bump fists.Upon discovering that Hanabi had never seen most of their favorite movies, Shōgi and Konohamaru immediately set about correcting this tragedy."I still don't know how you haven't seen these," Konohamaru shook his head. "Did you even have a childhood?"Hanabi darted a sharp look his way before reminding herself he was teasing. She settled for mumbling something like "Have you met my clan?""There are too many to watch tonight," Shōgi said philosophically. "And you don't have time to watch them in general, or you would have already." He looked up at her seriously. "This is a problem.""Is it?" Hanabi asked, curiously.Shōgi nodded sagely. "There are more boys than girls in our family. The older my brothers get, the more they will want to watch these. Even my sister watches them. If you are going to babysit us, you should probably know about them all – both the movies and series.""Guess I have my work cut out for me," Hanabi said gravely."We'll help," Shōgi shrugged. "Like training.""Oh?" Hanabi asked. "Who is 'we?'""Konohamaru and me. No one knows this stuff like we do. We'll watch them with you and fill you in on everything you need to know." He looked to Konohamaru for backup. "She still has a lot to learn.""Absolutely," Konohamaru nodded sagely, and instantly picking up on what his cousin was trying to do. "So what kind of training strategy are you thinking?""She's basically starting from nothing," Shōgi sighed. "It's going to take a lot of work.""I agree," Konohamaru nodded."I sound pretty hopeless," Hanabi muttered."No, we can get you up to speed," Shōgi mused in that so-much-older-than-seven-years-old way of his. "Every week would be best," he offered to Konohamaru."That is a bit tight, buddy," his older cousin flicked a glance to Hanabi. "Once a month might be an okay start."No," Shōgi shook his head. "That will take too long. Maybe every other week."Konohamaru rubbed the back of his neck. "Still pushing it. We both have pretty full schedules, Shōgi.""Every three weeks," Hanabi interjected, earning looks from them both. "It is a compromise," she shrugged. "I can't do all-nighters," she pointed out, "but I am sure I can find room in my schedule for some extra training."She and Konohamaru exchanged a glance while Shōgi pondered that. "It's a good start," he nodded slowly."I've been told I'm a fast learner," Hanabi said dryly."Well, no time like the present," Konohamaru grinned. "Shōgi – go pick the next movie. It will probably be the last one before Hanabi has to go home, so no run times over 120 minutes."Shōgi, tasked with this mission, sprang up from the couch and went to the shelves of DVDs.Konohamaru looked over to Hanabi, flicking a glance at his cousin. "You don't have to do this," he said too quietly for Shōgi to hear. "I know your schedule is insane, and-""And I love these kids. I've never really had the luxury of making time with them a priority. Father has often said that the Sarutobi compound is the safest place in Konoha, outside of our own. I know he won't object."Konohamaru looked uncertain. "Well, if you're sure," he trailed off as he looked over to where Shōgi was still contemplating their next movie selection.Hanabi followed his gaze and smiled at the sight of Shōgi in deep thought. "I'm sure," she said quietly. Two hours and forty-five minutes later, Hanabi was stretching with a yawn before reaching for her coat. Natsu and another Hyūga were standing just outside of the room, waiting to escort her home."Konohamaru and I will put together a watch list," Shōgi said. "I'll send you a copy of what to expect next time."Hanabi gave Shōgi a fond smile. "That sounds like a good plan," she agreed before yawning again. She began to blink away tears and apologized as she fumbled with her coat. Konohamaru reflexively plucked it out of her arms and held it out for her. She fished her scarf out of the sleeve of her coat – which is what had been impeding her progress in the first place – and wound it around her neck. "Thanks," she said over her shoulder as he she pushed her arms through the sleeves, and he dropped the coat in place."Anytime," he shrugged and put his hands in his pockets."And thanks for the movies, Shōgi," she turned to the boy who had come over to her, subconsciously mimicking Konohamaru's easy hands-in-pockets pose."Anytime," he also shrugged. Hanabi hugged Shōgi while she and Konohamaru exchanged amused glances."I'll see you soon," she promised the boy. She backed up and smiled at them both. "Don't stay up too late," she warned, buttoning her coat."Yes, mother," Konohamaru rolled his eyes. Both Sarutobis walked her to the door and waved goodbye, before returning to their lair.Konohamaru shot off two quick texts before taking Hanabi's spot on the couch. About ten minutes later, his phone buzzed multiple times. One was Genma, letting him know that per the assigned ANBU agent shadowing them, Hanabi made it home safely. The second was Hanabi giving him the same information and thanking both he and Shōgi for the fun night."Hanabi get home okay?" Shōgi asked sleepily."Yeah," Konohamaru glanced at his phone and back to his cousin. "She just messaged me. She said to give you a hug for her. I'm guessing you'd prefer a fistbump?"Shōgi held out his fist lazily, and his cousin initiated their complicated cousin-only-fistbump-handshake combo."Tell her thanks for coming," Shōgi yawned."Will do. You want to crash out here or in your room?""Here," Shōgi mumbled. "Never get to when everyone is home.""Got it," Konohamaru fixed the blanket on his cousin. "I'll put on another movie, and you work on conking out, okay?""Deal," Shōgi's eyes began to drift closed.Konohamaru did as he said, before settling in and sending more texts, grinning at his phone.Shōgi continued to watch under the guise of sleep. He knew that Konohamaru messaged his teammates and roommate pretty regularly, as well as Naruto and Kakashi – but he didn't normally grin that much when he did. Shōgi frowned. For whatever reason, the idea that his cousin might be messaging Hanabi didn't sit quite right with Shōgi. He didn't know what the weird tightness at the top of his lungs was, but he just didn't like it. Maybe he'd ask his dad about it in the morning. Man to Man.Pleased with that solution, he fell asleep with several itineraries for Hanabi flitting through his mind, and the sounds of his favorite anime in the background.

Konohamaru
*Ready Player One*
Tuesday, May 12th 11:15 AM KSTKonoha, Big Mart
The last few weeks of April and first week of May were a whirlwind of last classes and finals.Konohamaru hadn't seen Hanabi much, but they texted back and forth on occasion. Genma kept him updated, but her protection and surveillance was largely off campus, and not in his area."Your detail will pick up soon," Genma assured him. "June will be busy, but July should be fairly quiet. August is when you will be more involved, and it will be steady through the next academic year. Enjoy your free time while you can."Konohamaru and Inari had been on their way to having a lazy Tuesday, when they realized they were out of nearly everything from food to ketchup to toothpaste to sriracha."Guess it's been a while since we went shopping," Konohamaru sighed as they wound their way around the megastore."Been busy," Inari shrugged, reaching for a second pack of toilet paper. "For Moegi," he added, chucking it into the cart. "Since she lent us that pack.""How did we get so busy we didn't even put in our supply request last month?" Konohamaru groaned. "It isn't like it is that hard.""Can you imagine what we'd have to spend if the House didn't supply most of this stuff?" Inari asked rhetorically. "No wonder most university students are broke. We're lucky we just have to get through a week or two."That was a definite perk of living in Konoha House – especially as an ANBU agent in Konoha House. The dorm got some kind of crazy deal or tax break or something that allowed the organization to supply the students and agents with all of the essentials – and even some inessentials."But in almost four years, have we ever gotten this low?" Konohamaru puzzled."No," Inari shook his head. "Usually one of us is on top of it. Or Moegi reminds us."Konohamaru reached for toothpaste. "That's true," he tossed the box in the cart. "What's her excuse for slacking off?""Genma's been keeping her busy lately," Inari studied the list, then looked up to scan the shelves. "I don't think I've had to buy floss since I left home," he muttered."That's because your mom sent you to school with that gigantic box with, like, fifty things of floss," Konohamaru snorted. "I didn't think it was humanly possible to go through all of that.""Not if you don't take dental hygiene seriously," Inari drawled checking floss off the list.Konohamaru rolled his eyes. "Yeah, yeah, it's more important than brushing, blah, blah, blah.""Yuck it up," his roommate said calmly. "I'll be the one laughing when you have to glue your teeth in."Konohamaru was about to retort when his phone buzzed in his pocket.Text message from Hanabi:He's right. You should floss.Konohamaru looked around in surprise, while Inari leaned over his shoulder to read the text."See," he smirked triumphantly. "I told you so."Konohamaru rolled his eyes as he texted back.'Thanks for that. It isn't like he's already hard enough to live with.'"I'm an awesome roommate," Inari rolled up the list and swatted Konohamaru on the head. The sound of a smothered laugh came from the other side of the aisle, and they looked at each other before smirking. Inari jerked his head left, and Konohamaru nodded right. Leaving a clone with the cart, each scurried down opposite ends of the aisle to peer around the corner. Inari leaned back and motioned Konohamaru ahead. He nodded and crept on the other side of the aisle while Inari continued to banter with the clone. With the stealth one might expect of a fully trained shinobi, Konohamaru stole along the aisle, undetected. She hadn't registered his presence, and had her hand pressed over her mouth as she giggled and listened to the two of them on the other side.Konohamaru was within inches of her, when she turned around lazily. Her eyebrow was arched, and her Byakugan was active."Oh. Yeah," Konohamaru rubbed the back of his head. "Forgot about that.""She spotted you with her Byakugan, didn't she," Inari called over the aisle."Yup," Konohamaru replied wryly. Hanabi's smile was somewhere between amused and smug as she released the Byakugan and he dispelled his clone."Nice to see you," Inari waved, rounding the aisle with the cart and closing the distance between them. "What brings you here of all places?""This," she handed Inari a list. "Shōgi gave me specs for what I needed to buy to continue my training, but I wasn't sure where to go. This seemed like a good place to start."Inari's eyes went wide as he scanned the list. He showed it to Konohamaru, they shared a knowing look, and Inari pulled out his phone. "I'll round up the gang. We can finish up and then hit Quirks."He strode off, and the last thing Hanabi heard was "Udon? We've got a situation.""A situation?" she looked to Konohamaru, puzzled. "I'm just buying a gaming system like Shōgi said."He shook his head and tsked at her. "And that is where you are wrong, grasshopper. It's a good thing we found you when we did. C'mon. Help me finish up what's on our list, and we'll get on to your problem.""But it isn't a problem," Hanabi insisted reaching into her bag, extracting a folder. "I looked everything up, and matched his specs to the different systems so that I would know what to look for." "Udon will call Moegi," Inari announced, striding back down the aisle as he put his phone away. "I told them to give us twenty to finish up shopping and another fifteen to get there.""Perfect," Konohamaru gave a nod. He made a few shadow clones, tore the shopping list, and handed them each part of it. "Meet up at the register ASAP," he instructed, and they shot off into the store."Nice," Inari approved. He looked over to Hanabi. "You need to tell anyone that you're coming with us?""I don't need to go with you," she frowned. "Here," she offered him the folder. "See? According to the list he gave me, any of those systems should cover me. The list you have is just the model numbers I new were in stock."Inari blinked at her but took the folder. "Not even close," he murmured eyes darting between the list and the printouts. "We can do way better than this," he flicked her printed out information, "Udon will contact Shōgi after he gets a hold of Moegi.""Udon. Calling Shōgi," Hanabi said flatly. "Does he regularly contact an eight-year-old?""Sure," Inari shrugged. "Between the two of them, we'll make sure your system is up to speed with the rest of ours.""Why does that matter?" she threw up her hands. "It's not like I'm competing with you for coolest gaming system.""Wait, aren't you going to play us?" Inari wagged his finger between he and Konohamaru. "Online gaming and all of that? You weren't really just planning on playing by yourself all of the time, were you?"Hanabi looked at him blankly."Didn't think about that, did ya?" Konohamaru nudged her arm."Look," Inari shuffled the papers back into order, placing her list on top. "It isn't that this stuff isn't serviceable – it is. And I get that you are probably doing this more for Shōgi than for your own interest, so you're not looking for some crazy powerful set up or investing a bunch of money. But what we're really talking about is a system that gives you more options for about the same cost. This stuff," he handed back her folder, "won't keep up with our stuff – or, really, Shōgi's stuff – after a while. Might as well only buy once, right?"Hanabi held his gaze for a moment before sighing."Well at least one of you can explain things properly," she mumbled, returning the folder to her bag. "I suppose I should make sure I am purchasing only what I need.""Atta girl!" Inari grinned, shoving the cart forward. "Come to the Dark Side!""The what side?"Inari and Konohamaru both stopped short and looked at each other before looking at her."Shōgi hasn't gotten that far yet," Konohamaru offered."Long way to go?""Oh, yeah.""Still right here," Hanabi muttered."Well," Inari straightened up. "We'd better get on it! C'mon, Hanabi," he motioned for her to follow. "It's faster if we split up, and keeping up with KonoClones is a nightmare.""Now that I can believe," her lips twisted into an amused smirk. "I'm surprised they even let him use that technique in here.""Well," Konohamaru rubbed the back of his neck, "It isn't exactly encouraged.""In that case," Hanabi's grin glinted. "Inari and I will go check out with what is here, and you can meet us outside.""Great idea!" Inari agreed. "See you outside, Kono!""Traitors," he called after them, ignoring the tug in his gut at Hanabi's laugh. He felt one of his clones dispel, followed by another, and hurried to the register. He'd settle up with Inari later - right now, he had to get out of the store before someone complained to the manager. Again.
Kiba and Tenten
*Calculated Risks*
Friday, May 15th 8:45 PM KSTKonoha, sports bar
The night Kiba had won at pool, he and Tenten had no sooner gotten through their appetizers when she got called in to work."Genma's timing is the worst," she sighed, stuffing her phone into her pocket. "Normally I don't mind," she gave him a small smile, "But I admit – tonight was fun.""Agreed. And while I hate to cut it short, I can't really complain - seeing how you are racing off to keep an eye on my teammate and all.""True," she gave a small smile to the waiter as she signed the receipt and took her card. "This doesn't count as the dinner I owe you," she said, gathering her things. "Raincheck?""Raincheck," he grinned. That had been three weeks ago. They'd been trading texts more often, and sometimes they'd catch up at the ANBU base, or have a cup of coffee, but neither of them had much time. Tonight was their last mutual night free before Kiba's upcoming mission, so they'd decided to meet up for dinner. They had a pleasant dinner and conversation, skipping dessert in lieu of a final round of beverages. As the game playing on one of the big televisions overhead wrapped up, Kiba found himself halfheartedly hoping for overtime.Unfortunately, the buzzer sounded, and the game was over."Guess we'd better wrap up," Tenten said, tracing a bead of condensation down the neck of her beer bottle with the tip of her finger. "I have early training.""Lucky you," Kiba put his own glass down. Akamaru began to nudge at Kiba's leg. "I'd better take him out. See you outside?""Soon as I get the check."Kiba nodded and took Akamaru out of the restaurant while she waved the waiter down. He was leaning against the restaurant, one leg propped against the wall, arms crossed when she stormed out."What's your deal, Inuzuka?" she demanded, marching over and poking her finger into his chest. "I thought we had a bet.""We did.""So, what's with picking up the tab?"He shrugged. "Tsume didn't raise her son to let a girl pay for a date. Especially one that is heavily armed.""Well that is the most ridiculous thing I – wait, what?"Kiba's grin was slow and easy, his sharp canines glinting in the low light. "You heard me."Tenten blinked at him"This… this was a date?""Sure," Kiba pushed away from the wall and stretched. "We had a great time, I paid for dinner, and now I'm going to walk you home." He shrugged. "Pretty sure that constitutes a date. Unless," he studied her face, "you don't want it to be. Then it's just an excuse to have you take me out for a meal when I get back from a mission."Akamaru put his head under her hand, and she scratched his ears. "Is he always this difficult?""It's ok, Tenten," Kiba said gently. "It can just be a meal between friends."She kept her eyes on Akamaru, her lips twisting wryly."I'm… I'm not an easy person to date," she admitted. "That's why I generally don't bother.""It's hard to find people outside of work who get it," he agreed. "But I do get it. I know how insane your schedule is, and I know June you will basically be MIA. Still," he shrugged one shoulder. "I like spending time with you. I'd like to give it a shot."Tenten met his eyes then, peering at him as if looking for the fine print in a contract. He laughed lightly and held his arms out."I'm not that complicated, Tenten. What you see is what you get.""And… we're friends no matter what, right?""Absolutely.""Well," she rubbed the back of her neck. "I do like hanging out with you. And I wouldn't mind spending more time together…"He lifted his eyebrows."Alright," she smiled slowly. "We can call tonight a date."Kiba held out his hand to her. She took it tentatively and he looped her arm around his. "Now," he nudged her. "Was that so hard?""Oh, the beginning is always easy," she rolled her eyes. "Give it a week.""That's the best part! I'll be gone for more than a week! Easiest start to dating ever!"Tenten rested her hand on Akamaru's head as they walked. "I do have a long weekend coming up," she offered. "I could…I could request for the time off to match up with when you get back.""You don't have to give up your time for me," Kiba watched her carefully. "Especially since you don't get much of it to yourself.""I know, but… but maybe it would be nice to have the option to spend time together. You know. Without Genma or Hyūgas."Kiba gave an inelegant snort."Anything without Hyūgas – Hinata being the exception – is fine by me."The Inuzuka compound was in one of the less crowded areas of Konoha, which made it ideal for the training and raising of ninken. One of the roads that lead to the compound diverted to the training grounds right near Tenten (and Lee's) apartment building so Kiba knew where to go. Also, all of Lee's friends knew where he lived, just in case someone had to get him home. Just last month, he'd had one sip of alcohol from the glass next to his and fell asleep at the table."This is me," Tenten finally said as they arrived at the main entrance."So it is.""Thanks for a really fun night," she smiled at him. "Even if I didn't know it was a date.""That's ok," he winked. "I wasn't sure it was a date until you let me walk you home.""Oh?" she raised an eyebrow. "And what about that cemented this as a date?""Well, you didn't skewer me, for one," he nodded to her general person, as they both knew she was armed. "And for two, you agreed to getting together when I get back.""You make it all sound so simple," she chuckled."It is that simple, Ten," he met her eyes. "I'm interested in you, but I am your friend first. That won't change, ok?""No one can promise that things won't change, Kiba," her eyes darkened for a moment. "But that doesn't mean I'm not willing to try.""It's all we can do," he shrugged. "Well," mischief sparked in his eyes. "Not quite all we can do.""First date, Inuzuka," she narrowed her eyes. "Don't push your luck.""You've been hanging around Kakashi too much," he scoffed."But you are the one who said –""I meant a good night kiss, pervert.""I am not a -!"Kiba was grateful her initial stiffening at his kiss did not translate into him getting slapped or stabbed. She kissed him back, tentatively at first, but it became something more sure, and teasing, and warm, and absolutely worth getting beat at pool for. They stood for a moment, foreheads pressed together."You ok?""Yeah," she breathed. "I just…It's been a while.""Could've fooled me."She gave a breathy laugh as she met his eyes. "Thanks," she smiled crookedly. "See you when you get back?""Absolutely."Akamaru bumped her leg, and she scratched his ears. "You, too, big guy. Make sure you stay safe, ok?""We will," Kiba assured her. He leaned over and kissed her cheek. "Have a good night, Tenten.""You, too, Kiba – and Akamaru," she smiled. He waited until she was inside and the lobby door clicked shut behind her before heading toward home."Not a bad first date, eh Akamaru?" The big dog gave an enthusiastic bark. "Yeah, I agree," he chuckled. "She's way better than not bad."Akamaru sniffed the air, and looked up at Kiba, questioningly."Ah," he nodded. "I know." He sauntered down the path for a short while before passing a large tree."Have a good night, Lee," he called over his shoulder."You, too!" the enthusiastic reply came back before he could stop it.Kiba smirked. It looked like Tenten was going to be an even bigger challenge than he initially thought. His smirk turned wolfish.
"Bring it on."
Note:* Timeline is almost caught up to YMBiS. Lots of cross posting of things that happen, if you're into following multiple stories.*If you are reading YMBiS - this is the mission Kiba is coming back from at the beginning of Ch 9.

Neji
*The Morning Report*
Saturday, May 30th 7:28 AM KSTThe Hy
ū
ga Compound/Neji's home office
Neji was splitting his time looking over some clan reports, and going through the things Hinata asked him to consider for Hanabi's upcoming initiation. To think they had less than a month, now, for everything to fall into place. He was in a unique position of being both fully supportive of Hanabi, and yet a potential barrier to her position in the clan. She would have to endure the ceremonial spars, and he was to be her last opponent. If she failed to defeat him, she could be challenged as heir. Neji could also chose to declare his loyalty to her, even if he won the spar. If he was being honest, he did not think she could defeat him – not yet. Still, he had no intention of denying Hanabi her rightful place as heir, nor did he intend to fight with anything less than his full capacity. Not only would that cheapen her achievements, Hanabi was good enough to take advantage of any weakness shown. Anyone fool enough to underestimate her was bound to regret it.He sat back a moment and pinched the bridge of his nose with a sigh. Still no word from Tokuma. With any luck, the team that went to Oto might find something else – anything else – that might bring them closer to bringing the lost shinobi home. Anko had been making progress with her recovery, and was providing whatever information she could… but ultimately it was a waiting game. Neji only hoped that time was on their side. Then there was the small matter of Sumashi. Genma reported that there hadn't been legal ground to keep him in custody, so he had been released. Naturally, this had been done to see if it was possible to trace his movements back to whoever had hired him in the first place. He'd left the Land of Fire nearly immediately, and his movements had been erratic. The latest report was that he was headed toward Suna, but it had yet to be verified."I wonder who sent you," Neji mused aloud. His thoughts were interrupted by his mobile buzzing."Hyūga.""Three things," Tenten began without preamble. "First: our party-crasher made it to a small village outside of Suna. There is a sandstorm brewing, so Genma doesn't expect to hear much for a couple of days.""Noted," he jotted himself a note. "And second?""Yamato's team left this morning."Neji kept his voice carefully neutral as he asked, "Did you see them off?""No," she smothered a yawn, and he heard her pouring a cup of something – most likely coffee. "Kiba and I had dinner last night. We got our goodbyes in yesterday, and I got my run in this morning. Which leads us to the third thing.""Which is?""Lee and Gai reported in. They are doing well, are safe, and already debating how much curry they need to bring.""That is both reassuring and terrifying.""Well, given all the clan things you have coming up, I am sure you will have ample reasons to excuse yourself. Speaking of which, shouldn't you be training by now?""I'm training at home today," Neji shuffled some papers. "I'd invite you to join, but with the spars coming up, Grandfather has taken to watching anyone in the training areas and giving them the benefit of his years of wisdom.""What does he do after that five minutes is over?""Repeats himself."Tenten's laugh was honest and clear. "Hard pass, Hyūga. However, if you want to meet me at the dojo on Monday morning, I will be there at the normal time.""Not tomorrow?""My schedule is surprisingly full this weekend," she sighed. "I will probably settle for a trip to the gym instead. We might as well give ourselves a little bit of a break; you know what those two will be like when they return.""You make a valid point.""It happens more often than you'd think," she scoffed. "Alright. This coffee isn't going to finish itself. I'll let you get back to your morning.""Thank you for the updates.""No problem. See you Monday."They ended their conversation, and Neji shook his head at his teammate. She liked whatever quiet she could get in the morning, so he was not surprised she kept the conversation short. Knowing her, she was freshly showered, and would not budge until she'd had her second cup of coffee. He flicked a glance to the clock; there was still had about an hour before his scheduled training, but he had reached a good stopping point in his work. With a mental note to check in with Genma later today, he decided he might as well head to the training ground a little earlier than planned – and perhaps have some time before Grandfather arrived to offer his advice.
Hanabi
*Late nights and early mornings*
Saturday, May 30th 7:25 AM KST
The Hyūga Compound/Clan Head's private residence
Hanabi was tired. She yawned widely as she sat down to breakfast, thirty minutes past when she would normally arrive, even after training.Hinata was waiting for her, breakfast at the ready."Late night?""Sort of," Hanabi yawned again. "I was practicing a game that Shoji taught me. I played with him and Konohamaru online until Kurenai sent him to bed. After that," she yawned a third time," Konohamaru and I stayed up and played.""Was it fun?""I guess," she shrugged. "I like the mission aspect of the games, and some of the ones like puzzles. I'm still getting the hang of the different kinds.""Kiba plays," Hinata said, sliding a glass of juice in front of her sister. "I used to like watching him and Shino when we were younger. I wasn't very good at the first-person fighter ones," she frowned. "I liked the epic adventure ones, better.""I don't know," Hanabi smiled lazily. "There is something satisfying about taking out an imaginary enemy with an even more imaginary weapon. Or, at least I assume the weapons are imaginary, or we would have seen them in Tenten's arsenal.""Good point," Hinata chuckled. "What are your plans for today?""I don't really have many," she reached for her drink, blinking back another yawn."Then, perhaps we could spend part of today together," Hinata poured herself a small glass of juice. "Things will be more hectic soon, and I'd like to spend the time before clan matters take all of our time.""I think we should put a "meeting" on the calendar every week just so we can be somewhere Gramps can't find us," Hanabi grinned. "Maybe somewhere they serve cinnamon rolls.""Hm," Hinata pursed her lips, ostensibly in thought, but hiding her smile. "There is quite a bit of business we need to attend to as clan-mother and heir-apparent. I'll see what I can do.""Excellent," Hanabi grinned as Hinata handed her an omelet, cheered with the prospect of more time with her sister, and time away from the Elders who had so many things to say about the upcoming events. It was a good thing she hadn't registered for any summer sessions this time around; she would hardly have the time. What she did have was a rigorous training schedule, and a laundry list of minutiae to address before the ceremonial spars.Hinata had a similar list, but Hanabi didn't mind going with her on her errands."Just remember," Hinata told her once they stopped for a cold drink. "Everything will be over by the 22nd of June. You'll be heir, and life can go back to normal. At least," she smiled as she poked a straw into her drink, "that is what I tell myself."Before Hanabi could reply, someone joined them at the table."Oh, hey," Naruto stood at the high top, his smile bright and his eyes brilliant. "I thought that was you, Hinata. This is your sister, right?" He looked her in the eye. "We haven't been formally introduced – I'm Naruto. Uzumaki Naruto. A friend of Hinata's.""Hanabi," she took his outstretched hand, skating a glance at her sister. "Hyūga Hanabi. A sister of Hinata's."To his credit, his smile did not falter, even as Hinata shot her a warning look."Right, right," he laughed. "So, what are you two up to?""Taking a break," Hanabi replied easily, taking the wrapper off her own straw. "Hinata has a full day of errands.""Oh!" Naruto's eyes went wide. "I didn't mean to interrupt –""It's not an interruption," Hinata offered kindly. "We were just taking a moment to check things off of our list and plan our next stop.""Would you like to join us?" Hanabi asked innocently, making Hinata look at her curiously. "I stand a better chance of a rest if you distract her.""If that's ok…" he looked between them, and Hinata nodded. "Ok, great! I'll be right back!"And with his signature endless energy, he went to wait in line for a drink."Hm," Hanabi studied him before turning back to her sister. "He's taller than I remember.""Hanabi," Hinata eyed her sister. "What are you doing?""I'm in the mood for some entertainment," Hanabi shrugged. "What's wrong with that?"Hinata continued to study her sister for a moment, unsure what she was missing.Hanabi grinned and slurped her drink, making Hinata blink, and buying her just enough time until Naruto came back to join them."So!" Naruto smiled at Hinata. "How're things going for the party?""So far, so good," she returned the smile. "How is your day?""Fine," he waved away the thought. "I have the day off, so I am getting a few odds and ends done.""There you are!"The bell on the door tinkled behind Konohamaru."Been looking all over for you," he rolled his eyes at Naruto. "Oh, Hi, Lady Hyūga," he noticed Hinata as Naruto turned to face him. "Nice to run into you again. And to see you, Hanabi.""We do seem to be running into each other lately," Hinata gave a small laugh."Small village," he shrugged. "Do I have time for one of those?" he nodded to the drinks and looked at Naruto."Join us," Hinata interjected. "It will be good company."With a nod (and after asking if anyone needed anything) Konohamaru left to order, and Naruto and Hinata settled into easy conversation.Hanabi, meanwhile, kept her expression perfectly neutral, sending a quick text before giving her full attention to Naruto and Hinata.Even when Konohamaru returned and gave her a subtle wink, she maintained composure, suppressing her urge to grin.It would be too bad if she ruined her own chance to monitor her sister for any signs of lingering or burgeoning affection for Naruto by giving herself away.
Konohamaru
*Don't Hate the Player*
8:45 PM KSTKonoha house/Konohamaru and Inari's room
Konohamaru wasn't surprised when he opened his door to a mostly dark room peppered with the sounds of explosions, and the furious clicking of controllers. He had walked in to find Udon and Inari locked in an epic gaming battle."On your left, Moegi!" Inari warned, eyes fixed on his screen. There was the sound of something exploding and Moegi's voice came over the speakers. "Got him!""Nice!" Udon said, adjusting his headset. "If you take the shortcut to your right, you'll be on the same level as Inari. I'll go ahead of you guys and cover from the top level."See you there, Inari," Moegi chirped, as her character cheerfully tossed another kunai with an exploding tag at the enemy."I'll be waiting," he smirked. "I'll try to leave a couple guys for you to take out.""Well, aren't you the gentleman," she replied. "Just don't get taken out before I get there."Udon peered at his screen, coordinating everyone's movements. His specialty was animation and CGI, but he usually worked to construct battle simulations and interactive digital or holographic maps for ANBU. With Inari's talent for architecture, they often worked together to mock up 3-D digital layouts of areas for missions. Right now, though, they were playing a popular game, Shinobi's Creed."Welcome back," Inari said over his shoulder, not looking away from the screen. "You want in?""I'm good," Konohamaru went to the fridge. "I'll wait until the next round."The small living area of the two-bedroom dorm room was separated from the kitchen by the breakfast bar. Konohamaru grabbed a drink and stood on the kitchen side, watching as the three of them played their way through the level. He checked the time and pulled out his phone. He typed out 'You get home alright?' and sent off the text. Maybe a minute later, his screen lit up with the reply. From: Hanabi'Yes. Naruto saw us home.''Oh, yeah? '
'Yeah. After you left, he 'just happened' to be headed most of the places we were, and he stuck around to help. And offered to help again.'
Konohamaru raised an eyebrow at his screen.'For real?'
'For real. So. What's his angle? Because I think he made a point to run into my sister.'
Konohamaru thought about it for a minute.Naruto had been the one to suggest meeting where they did and when they did, hadn't he? No, he was positive. Naruto had him meet up over in that area of Old Konoha because he said that he was wrapping up some business down there. Konohamaru hadn't thought to ask him about that. The more he considered it, the more he thought Hanabi might be right. Normally Naruto would meet him wherever – where they ate was always more important to him than the convenience of getting anywhere.'You might be on to something. The reasons he gave for meeting up and staying in the old city area were pretty flimsy. And he didn't exactly seem surprised when we bumped into you.'
'Did you know where we were?'
'Not at the time,' he replied truthfully. 'And Naruto didn't ask me. But now that I think about it, we've 'run into' Lady Hyūga multiple times.
'So I gather. I also suspect he is texting her fairly regularly.'
Konohamaru felt his eyebrows shoot up, and he blinked a few times at the screen.'Are you serious?'
'Very.'
'And what do you think about it?'
'Honestly, I'm not sure yet. He seems nice enough, and he seems to genuinely like my sister. She isn't just part of his assignments, is she?
He was quick to reassure her. 'Not generally. He's made a point to be assigned to her when he can, though. Like, gone out of his way to be.'
'Is this normal for him?'
That time, he snorted.'Okay, when it comes to Naruto, the word 'normal' doesn't really apply.'
'Wonderful…'
He corrected himself. 'That probably sounded meaner than I meant it. Naruto's always been unpredictable, but he's never anything other than genuine.'He waited a good forty seconds or so for her reply.
'And what are his thoughts about my sister? Because from here, it looks like he is trying to date her.'
Konohamaru stopped and stared at his phone. Was Naruto trying to date Hinata, or was he just still trying to make up for their super awkward re-introduction a couple of months ago? He'd made a point of trying to make her feel welcome and included, saying that her clan duties separated her from their group of friends pretty early on, and that she was shy. That wasn't suspicious, really. Naruto knew what it was like to feel left out, so he made a point to make sure no one else felt that way. Then again, he'd heard quite a bit about Hinata from Naruto lately. Not always directly, but she came up in conversation pretty often. He drummed his fingers on the countertop.'Honestly? I'm not sure. But it sure looks that way.'
'Should I be concerned?'
Konohamaru shook his head as he replied.'No, not at all. You just bring up a really interesting point, and I think it is worth considering.'
'Meet me for coffee tomorrow to help me consider it?'
A little smile pulled at the corners of his mouth.'Name the time and place.'There was another loud explosion and a cheer from Inari, Udon, and Moegi. The screen flashed 'Mission Complete' in bold red letters, and his friends got up to stretch."That was intense," Udon exhaled. "You up to joining in the next round?""Absolutely," Konohamaru pocketed his phone. "Looks like you guys are really on tonight.""Moegi is the one who is on fire tonight." He frowned at his friend. "You sure you're up to a game? You're looking a little flushed."Konohamaru brushed the comment away. "Just got some sun earlier. You guys ready to go?""I'll get the game set up," Udon went back to his 'station' and Konohamaru booted up his system to play.Inari eyed him with something that looked suspiciously like mischief. "So," he asked nonchalantly. "Got some sun?""A little," Konohamaru shrugged."Hm," his roommate hummed. At the look Konohamaru leveled him, he asked, "Shut up?""Shut up."Inari shrugged "Fair enough."They both settled in their stations, and got in the game.
*Meanwhile*
8:43 PM Suna Time/11:43 KSTLand of Wind
The Land of Wind was not the place to be this close to summer.Sumashi downed another cold beer and reminded himself not to do this again next year.He glanced over his shoulder. He was still the only person in this godforsaken place, and the raging sandstorm made it unlikely that that would change. Turning back to the bartender with a sigh, he held up his hand. The pale man nodded a grizzled head, collected the empty glass and filled a fresh one.Sumashi fidgeted in his seat, his foot bouncing on the bottom rung of the barstool. It had been like this since he'd been released from Konoha. If he had realized he'd have to face Morino-fucking Ibiki, he'd never have taken the stupid job. As soon as he had been let go, he gathered the money and supplies he had hidden away, and gotten the hell out of Konoha and the Land of Fire.He only came to the small village fifty miles outside of Suna because he got word of a job."Sorry to keep you waiting," a voice said smoothly over his shoulder.Sumashi didn't turn to acknowledge the man that slid into the seat next to him, or speak until after they both had fresh drinks."My rates have gone up," Sumashi said without preamble. "And I'm not working in the Land of Fire for a while.""Mm, I heard that," the man replied, pushing his glasses up his nose. "Unfortunate bit of business, that.""Yeah," Sumashi snorted. "Unfortunate. That's one word for it.""So is careless," the other man shrugged, "but then, I'm not one to pay for sloppy work.""Show me someone else that could've gotten in, then," the Iwa nin growled. "And you know what? Then go hire him.""Easy, friend," a surprisingly strong hand on his shoulder kept him from shoving away from the bar. "I wouldn't waste time meeting with you if I didn't have work for you.""Fine," he grumbled. "Then let's talk business.""Go ahead and finish your drink," the man said, lifting his own glass. "No sense in rushing.""You're different than the last guy," Sumashi remarked, drinking his beer. "He was nothing but hurry.""Oh, that was just Rokuro. You get used to him after a while.""You know him? That how you got my name?""We are acquainted.""Sorry about that," he snorted. "So who are you, anyway?""I'm just a humble medic," he replied with a shrug. "But you can call me Kabuto."The man looked up to order another drink, but found the bartender gone."Well, then, Kabuto, what is this job?""Oh, don't worry," Kabuto said with an eerie smile. "You're perfect for it. Or you will be, once I get you ready.""What do I have to do?""It's simple, really," He shrugged. "There is only one thing we have to change.""And that is?"Kabuto gave an apologetic smiled. "You have to be dead.""I have to be what-"His eyes widened in horror, but no scream came from his gaping, twisted mouth. His vocal cords were severed by a sharp blast of chakra to the throat, as were many of his major neural connections. He fell to the ground in a writhing, convulsing heap."There," Kabuto said looking down at the man's twitching body. "Much better. Don't worry. Once I get you back to my lab, I'll fix you right up. Until then," he leaned over and activated the seal on the scroll. The body disappeared, and Kabuto rolled up the scroll and tucked it into the folds of his cloak. He left money on the counter for the bartender, and disappeared into the whirling sands.Several moments later, the bartender returned, put the money in the till, and promptly forgot everything he had seen that night.
