Work Text
Nino was bored. Fifteen minutes into the class and he was already done with all the atoms and molecules shit the teacher kept on sprouting. Like, haven’t they covered this topic hundreds of times since they started the damn school already?
Sighing quietly, he rested his forehead on the cold wood of the desk and took out his phone. Usually, he’d bother Alya but she had some important gig today and didn’t want to be disturbed at all and while Nino was an asshole, he wasn't that big of an asshole. Hence, the phone.
About ten minutes later, scrolling through Tumblr, he came across an article that said:
Ten best ways to make your soulmate regret ever ignoring you
. By the time he finished reading it, Nino was enlightened in ways he could not explain.
“Holy shit,” he whispered, awed. “Holy— Mari. Marinette, dude,” he poked his desk partner with a pen until she finally paid attention to him. “You have to see this,” he said, pushing his phone in her face.
“What-” she began reading the text, her nose scrunched up in confusion, “—the hell? Best ways to propose to your soulmate, what?” She squinted at him suspiciously. “You’re not asking Alya to marry you or something, right?”
“What, no!” He snatched the phone out of her hands and looked down at the article open now. “Oh, no!” He wailed, scrolling frantically. “It was just here! When will you learn to use the touchscreen? Jesus.”
“What,” she said, incredulous. “It wasn’t— you are the one who flaps his hands about when excited. Stop blaming me for your mistakes.”
“Whatever,” he huffed, switching his phone off and sliding it back in his pocket. “It’s just that it was an amazing article. You’d have loved it.”
Marinette rolled her eyes. “Dude, I’m sure you can find it again. Check your history or something, you’ll find it.”
“Maybe.” He cupped his face in his palm, watching Marinette return to doing what she was doing earlier (doodling while pretending to take notes, not like Nino, who didn’t even pretend these days). He sighed. “Aren’t you the least bit curious about it, though?”
She shook her head. “Not really.”
“Liar.”
“I’m not.”
“Okay.”
A sigh. “Alright, yes, I’m curious. Now tell me what was it about?”
Wiggling in excitement, he did.
……..
“You’re not serious?” Marinette asked once Nino, grinning like a loon, explained what he read. “Nino!”
“Oh, babe, I’m dead serious. It’s gonna be glorious, you just see!”
Marinette gave her best friend a look, hoping it would convey all the emotions she was feeling at the moment; judgement, disappointment, everything. This idiot, after reading an article on how to exact proper revenge from your soulmate, wanted Mari to give him her arm and then, freedom to do whatever he wanted to do and. And, look, Marinette trusted Nino with her life alright, but with this?
“You’ve lost your mind if you think I'm letting you come anywhere near my arm with a marker,” she growled, hoping to scare him away.
He pouted. “You hurt me. Don’t you—”
“No! I don’t trust you. Dude, the last time I trusted you, I nearly ended up in prison. Prison, Nino, like criminals!”
“It wasn't my fault!” He cried. “You were the one who shot down my idea of taking it out on the balcony and suggested the basement!”
“You lit the lighter near it!”
“Exactly what we were supposed to do! Did you even read the experiment?”
“I did! You on the other hand—” She paused and inhaled deeply. She needed to calm herself down, she told herself. If she got another detention, her grades will suffer which could mean a college of not her choice which, if happened, she will kill Nino and she didn’t want to be a murderer, right? “Alright, whatever. The point remains. I’m not letting you draw or write anything on my arm. Not now, not ever.”
Nino rolled his eyes, his shoulders relaxing. He was preparing for a longer argument. “Don’t be a baby,” he said, fishing out a marker out of her pouch. “Give me your arm.”
“Nino.”
“Come on, Mar,” he pleaded, eyes wide and lower lip jutting out. “Please? It’ll be harmless. Like, totally harmless, I swear on my honour.”
Marinette snorted. “As if you have any.”
“And it’s not like they even exist, right?” He continued, ignoring Marinette’s remark. “So, really, what’s the big deal?”
Indeed. Why was she protesting this so much? She sighed again. “You know what, fine. But if anything goes wrong, I swear to god, Nino, I will kill you.”
“Done,” he replied, grinning madly. “Now arm, please!”
-
Moments later, Nino began his artistic whatever on Marinette’s arm while she, the gullible girl child, turned her back to him and without really paying attention to what the idiot was doing, began to complete her next commission (yes, commission work, not mindless doodling, Nino!). And now well, in the words of some wise man, she was reaping what she sowed.
“Oh, my god,” Marinette bellowed, horrified. “Nino, what the fuck did you do?!”
“What I had to,” he replied but Marinette could scarcely hear it over the buzzing of her ears.
There, on her arm, were dozens of brazenly drawn dicks, in various shapes and sizes. One, looping around her wrist was especially creative with a big dot on each ball and ‘balls or boobs’, written underneath it, a winky face next to it. How the fuck did this boy draw so many dicks so quickly?
“You fucker!” She glared at her grinning best friend. However, before she could curse him further, Ms Mendelive’s sharp voice cut in.
“Is there any trouble, Ms Dupain-Cheng?” The teacher asked, her eyebrow raised.
Marinette shook her head. “N-no, Madam. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to disturb—”
“I hope not,” the teacher said dryly, waving her hand. “Now please sit down and pay attention.”
“Right. S-sorry, ma’am,” Marinette murmured and did as told, her friend still sniggering next to her. “You absolute fucker,” she hissed once the teacher’s attention was no longer on them. “You—”
“Jesus, your face,” he said, wiping his eyes with the back of his hand. “Fucking hell, this is
hilarious
. Shit, ow, my stomach is hurting, this so funny, hahaha!”
Reluctantly, a smile broke on Marinette’s face too. Despite how blatantly disrespectful the message was, it was funny. Nino was hella creative when he wanted to be and looking closely, Marinette could swear he’s paid special attention to this.
“Shit, Nino,” she whispered, once the class was over and done, still unable to believe this actually happened. “I can’t believe you really did this.”
“Honestly? I can’t either,” he admitted with a giggle making Marinette snigger as well.
“Jesus. They’re gonna be so mad!”
“Justice well served,” he said, all proud. “The dude, if alive, didn’t bother replying to you after your numerous attempts. If this offends them I’ll be so happy. Knowing you, you would be too!”
Marinette smiled. “True.” Picking up her bag and sliding over her shoulder, she said, “I guess I’m just afraid that it might make it worse than it already is.”
Nino snorted. “Nothing can’t be worse than this. Now stop worrying! I’ve got some delicious homemade pasta in my bag, begging to be eaten.”
“Fuck yes!” Marinette cheered, uplifted. “Let’s also take some photos, yeah? And send them to Alya. She’ll be so jealous!”
Nino nodded, a matching grin on his face. “I love the way you think, Maribug.”
-
Meanwhile, in some other part of the city, a model with golden hair and green eyes stared down at his arm in horror as dicks after dicks kept appearing on it.
.
When Adrien woke up, he thought it would be a nice day. The weather was nice, the people around him looked happy and confident. And, he was clean today. There wasn't even a speck of something not
his
on his skin which cheered him even more.
His soulmate was a very active woman. Despite him not replying to her, she didn't seem to mind carrying conversations or doodling mindless little drawings on their shared skin which, while was something he didn't mind, could be sometimes a little bothersome. Especially on days like today. Adrien's eyes, warm all over with the emotions he couldn't describe,
wandered over the massive crowd filling the stadium. It was supposed to be a small event with admittedly very expensive tickets and yeah, he didn't expect so many people to really show up today. All for him!
Once, after the event started, he walked on the stage wearing pieces of his father's latest summer collection, making the crowd go wild. Shouts and cheers filled the stadium making him gin truthfully in a long while. And grateful. So fucking grateful. He loved his fans a lot.
“Such a handsome lad he is,” the announcer said in his mic, eyeing Adrien up and down saucily. Adrien just grinned a tad darker, posing in a way to display all his assets. Damn it, he felt confident today. Everything would go well.
Except.
Except it didn't. for as he answered the silly question of another one of his fans’, a strange hush fell over the crowd, making him squirm.
“Natalie,” he whispered in his comms. “What’s wrong?”
“Your arm, sir,” she said, sounding horrified.
Swallowing, he looked down at the arm he’d refused to cover today, and—
For as long as he can remember, Adrien has not even once written to his soulmate. Not once! Took special precautions to avoid even giving them a sign he existed. Today, however, once he was ushered to safety by his security, he didn’t even hesitate before picking up the pen and writing the words that would change his life forever.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
“—We ended up sitting there until Alya came and shouted at us,” Nino finished with a flourish. “She was quite mad at us, but thankfully, Mar gave her one of that kicked puppy looks so she relented. Or, maybe because it was my birthday? Either way, it was damn scary but hella funny.”
“I swear to god you kids end up in the strangest situations,” said Mrs Dupain-Cheng, Sabine, shaking her head ruefully. “Give them too much freedom and they do this!”
“But we didn’t do
any
thing, Mama DC, that’s the whole point,” Nino exclaimed. At her deadpan expression, he continued, “I swear to god, we didn’t!”
“I believe you,” she said, not believing him at all.
Nino shrugged and looked at Mr Dupain-Cheng who was sitting next to her, shaking with laughter and smiled sheepishly.
They’ve come home after school, Marinette eager to change into something that would hide the monstrosity that were Nino’s drawings because no matter how much she washed, the ink wouldn’t go away! (“What the fuck did you even use, you motherfucker, I’m going to kill you!”) While she did that, he sat in the living room, chilling with her parents, entertaining them with their latest adventures and sipping on the delicious hot cocoa.
“Marinette needs to be grounded for that,” Tom mused, finally over his laughing fit. He sipped on his cooling tea and said, “Nino, too, of course.”
“Of course,” Sabine chimed in agreement as Nino shot Tom a look of utter betrayal.
“Why me? I was just an innocent bystander!” He said, “C’mon guys, believe me a little, pleeease!”
Tom snorted. “Right. Because innocent bystanders encourage their best friends to mix—”
Whatever he was going to say was cut off by a loud thump, followed by a series of curses. Nino turned to look at the trapdoor leading to Marinette’s room, waiting for an explanation.
“Marinette, are you alright, sweetheart?” Sabine asked loudly.
“Yes, mama.” The trapdoor creaked open and Marinette’s head poked out. “Or, err, no. Maybe? I don’t know. This is a little confusing. I need Nino upstairs.”
“But I’m not finished with my story yet,” Nino whined, already getting up.
Sabine rolled her eyes while Tom pointed at the tray of freshly baked cookies and said, “Take those with you and give some to Marinette. We’ll talk about your punishment later.”
Nervous of the mischievous glint in Tom’s eyes, Nino nodded and did as he was told.
.
After pacing the nth round in her tiny room, Marinette decided to sit on her sette and curl into a small miserable ball of hurt and pain until Nino came. Which, shouldn’t he be here already? How long does it even take a person to climb like ten stairs?
Then, as if he heard her thoughts, Nino finally entered her room, wearing a sheepish, apologetic grin and holding a cookie tray in his hand. From the huge smudge adorning his cheek, he probably had hot chocolate too, which— “Ugh,” she growled in frustration. Now wasn’t the time to think about food!
“Sorry, I really needed to pee first,” Nino said, lowering the tray on her desk. Eyeing the mess of clothes on the floor, he raised a curious brow. “Sooo, I guess something happened?”
“Yes.” Marinette curled into herself tighter.
“Alright.” Brows knitting in concern, Nino sat beside her and gently asked, “What’s wrong Nettie?”
“I—” She swallowed, willing the sudden lump in her throat away. “I— Nino, I got a reply.”
“You got— what?” Marinette nodded miserably. Nino gasped. “No shit?”
“Nope.”
“Holy—” he gasped once more, then got up and began pacing, running hands through his hair anxiously as if it was he who got the damned message. Drama queen, Marinette thought with no little amusement as her lovely best friend finally asked the most important question: “What did it say?”
“Well.” Marinette sighed and sat up, showing him her arm and said, “I think it'll be better if you read it for yourself.”
For a second, Marinette thought he might argue but he must’ve seen something on her face because he didn’t, instead took her arm, and— “I’m going to kill that bastard,” he growled, half surprised, half angry.
Marinette winced, tracing the first words his soulmate ever wrote on her skin with her eyes.
‘WHAT THE HELL, YOU F*UCKING CRAZY???’ stood starkly against the pale of her skin, all bold and angry; a reprimand to her grievous crime to try to get her soulmate to talk to her.
“What an absolute piece of shit,” Nino shouted, snapping Marinette out of her spiral. “This is so unnecessarily mean! Like—”
“I know, Nino,” Marinette said with a sigh. She leaned back and pressed her eyes close. “I- I don’t even know what this means. Like, we thought they were dead, Nino. We thought— this is like a new level of fucked up.”
“True.” Nino sat beside her, and said, “Mar. I’m so sorry.”
She shifted, hugging him back. “I mean I never really did expect them to be polite or anything. They have ignored me for so long, but—” She huffed, unable to put her thoughts in words. “My expectations for them were low but holy fuck.”
“Did you just, um.”
She smiled and shrugged. “I don’t know how to feel, Nino,” she admitted after a brief pause. “I mean on one hand I’m happy that they’re alive. Papa says the pain of losing your soulmate is excruciating and I really wasn’t sure so, yeah. On the other hand, though, I’m angry. I’m- I’m so fucking angry, Nino. I drew or wrote or did something on my skin every damn day my entire life and now they dare to paint themselves as a victim here? Like, fuck you, you turtle dick. You- you—”
“Mari,” Nino interrupted, rubbing her back. “Babe, breathe.”
She shook her head. “I’m mad, Nino! It’s so unfair what they put me through. I just I just, ugghhhhhhhhhh!”
Huffing out a small laugh, Nino nodded. “I know, babe. And honestly? Same.”
“Even Chloe has a soulmate! She, who’s bullied everyone around for the longest time, still does, has a soulmate who loves her and cherishes her while I- I just.” Just what, she thought, disgusted by her own thought process. “I just can’t stop wondering what makes them resent me so much.”
“I’m sure they don’t resent you, Mar,” Nino said, rolling his eyes. He looked Marinette in the eyes, daring her to challenge his words. “To resent you, they need to talk to you first, right? Since you guys have never actually talked, I’m pretty sure it’s them who’s the douchebag here.”
“But—”
“Nah. No buts, bro. If they’re somehow offended by an imagined slight, it’s their fault, not yours. You have done your best to make things work between you two. If they can’t see that, then they can suck my dick. You will not blame yourself for this, not even a bit. That’s an order!”
Marinette nodded, her eyes stinging a bit. “Alright, alright. I’ll try.”
“I’m serious, okay? I know you. I know what soulmate means to you. But you need to realise that at some point you need to stop making excuses for them. This can’t- this can’t go on forever. You’ve done all you could: you gave them space, you gave them time. For fucks sake, Mar, you never even left a single angry or rude message despite everything! So, please, okay?”
“Okay.” At Nino’s still worried look, she sighed and said, “Yes, Nino, I accept that none of this is my fault. I’ve done all I could. Fuck them. They can eat shit.”
Nino nodded, grinning proudly. Marinette rolled her eyes but grinned back. She realised that what she just said was true. It wasn’t her fault. She didn’t choose to get stuck with such a person who only replied because instead of a bouquet of flowers, he got a few dicks on themself. She’s done everything she could and yeah, now this all was on them.
Feeling validated and lighter than ever, she said, “God, Nino, what would I be without you,” and hugged her best friend properly.
.
Later that evening they were both laying on her couch, binging
Supernatural
, when she asked, “Do you think I should write them back?”
“Absolutely not,” Nino said almost immediately. He hit the pause and turned to look at her. “Marinette, I feel like I’m repeating this for the nth time this day but I guess you need reminders constantly. They’ve been nothing but a complete asshole to you. First ignoring you, then cussing like that, as if that bitch has
any
right. No. You will not reply to them.”
“But they’re my soulmate,” she grumbled, pouting slightly. “It is not like I can do it for very long.”
“Well.” He shrugged. “Do it as long as you can?”
“Easy for you to say, bitch. I will have to use my hands and not like I can afford those pens with the ink that doesn’t show on your partner.”
He rolled his eyes. “Burn that bridge when we get to it?”
“Fine, fine.” After a sigh, she said, “Sometimes I wish you and I were soulmates. How easy it would’ve been. But then I realise we wouldn’t have met Alya if that had happened.”
“Yeahhh.”
“Also, it would’ve been like being your sibling’s soulmate and, unfortunately, incest is not my cup of tea.”
“Soulmate doesn’t mean you have to fuck the other person, dude. Sam and Dean are soulmates. You think they’re fucking?”
“You think they’re not?”
“Dude, gross!”
Marinette laughed loudly.
“But seriously though,” Nino said, turning to her. “You do know that you don’t always have to have something romantic with your soulmate, right?”
“Yep.”
“Like, yeah they mostly do end up in one, but not always. My parents, for example. They’re not soulmates but still love each other so much that they just might be. Don’t be down if yours do end up being an asshole, Nettie, please. Just let them go, okay, and try to find whatever you want in other places. Please. I hate seeing you sad and heartbroken.”
“Nino,” Marinette said, giving her friend a soft, reassuring smile, “I know.”
“In fact, you know what, you don’t even have to search that far. You can hop in with Alya and I. We can all be a big happy family,” Nino said, grinning as Marinette laughed.
“Yeah, definitely. I look forward to it.”
;;;
It has been 7 hours, 48 minutes, 18 seconds since Adrien, in a moment of utter fear and desperation, wrote those words on his arm and he hasn’t got a reply yet. It wasn’t as if he was looking forward to her reply or anything, haha, never! It’s just it wasn’t what he was expecting either. He didn’t think she'd remain quite like this and, fuck. He was getting anxious.
Exhaling in an attempt to calm himself, he shifted until he was lying comfortably on his ginormous sofa. He was filling up a mini questionnaire Natalie had sent him, asking for every small detail of his relationship with his soulmate. “We need every bit of information about the relation between you two,” she’d said, “to prevent this turning into something more than a childish prank.”
Yeah, right.
“I don’t think I should’ve cussed. What was I thinking,” he muttered to himself as he typed the answer explaining how, no, his soulmate has never expressed any ulterior motive other than wanting a relationship like normal soulmates.
The thing is, though, he wasn’t really thinking. As soon as he was seated in his comfortable limousine after the blunder, the first thing he did was to write that message out. He was angry and hurt and it seemed like a perfectly reasonable thing to do.
It was after he was in his room, scrutinizing over the dicks he realised that it wasn’t his soulmate’s style at all. She’s been drawing mini doodles on herself for years and so he knew it wasn’t her but. But it was already too late.
Then he thought she did allow the other person to draw on her; jeopardized his entire future. So, his anger wasn’t entirely unreasonable right? And while yeah, he can be blamed for not taking the necessary protection, he knew that even if he had worn makeup today, with the type of marker that was used, the dicks still would’ve been visible meaning there was no way he could’ve prevented this from happening. So.
Rubbing his tired eyes, he looked up eagerly when he heard the door knock. Natalie had, in a moment of kindness, promised him food full of flavour and calories for dinner and Adrien was excited. However, it wasn’t the steward who entered his room, oh no.
“Father!” Adrien yelped, springing up from his relaxed position. Flapping around in order to look presentable, he said, “What are you— I wasn’t made aware that you were going to stop by!”
“I know.” Gabriel hummed, eyeing Adrien’s room with a distasteful expression. Adrien swallowed, afraid he’ll have to endure a lecture about keeping the room tidy but, for once the gods were kind because quietly, Gabriel sat down on a single sofa seat and said, “I didn’t think you need to be told beforehand every time your own father wants to see you, Adrien.”
“Sorry.”
“Natalie informed me about what happened earlier at the event today,” Gabriel said, his brows raised in an intimidating manner. “Of all the things I’d expected to go wrong— I must confess it shocked me quite a bit, Adrien.” His lips quivered a little as if he was trying hard not to laugh. Or shout. “Can I see them?”
“What?”
“The drawings, Adrien! If they have not erased them by now, of course.”
“Oh. They’ve, um. No, they’re still here,” Adrien said, panicking because what the fuck?! “But I don’t see why you need to see these? Natalie has already taken several pictures for the report. You can—”
“I can also see them on your arm. What difference would it make?”
Um, for one I won’t be there.
“But, father—” Adrien tried feebly despite knowing there was no way he could get out of this. Biting back a sigh, he carefully offered his arm.
.
“Father, are you- are you alright?” Adrien choked out, bewildered as he took the scene in front of him. His father, the embodiment of grace and agility, was leaning heavily on the armrest, his face pressed into his elbow, making weird, raspy sounds that strangely sounded like, like—
“Wait, are you
laughing?”
Adrien had, afraid as he was, immediately pressed his eyes shut when he felt his father, with surprising gentleness, grasp his arm, not wanting to see how the older man might react. He was sure he would be angry, disappointed. Resigned. But never in his dreams did he expect
this
.
“Jesus Christ,” Adrien said, sliding down on the floor next to his father’s seat. “Jesus Fucking Christ.”
“I, I am extremely sorry, Adrien. It’s just I didn’t—” his father managed between gasps, “—didn’t expect this.”
“Right.”
“This is so embarrassing,” the older man continued, “but also so very hilarious. Oh god, I can’t stop.”
“It really isn’t,” Adrien muttered mostly to himself as he got up to pour his dad a glass of water.
“Your soulmate is very creative,” Gabriel commented, sipping on his water. He glanced at Adrien’s arm and started giggling again and Adrien wondered if this was how being high felt. His father was
giggling
. His soulmate drew
dicks
on him. What.
“Very daring, too,” Gabriel added, humming thoughtfully. “Managed to flip the entire event single-handedly.”
Blinking at the (accidental?) pun, Adrien shrugged. “I guess? Wait,” Adrien said, confused as fuck. “Shouldn’t you be mad at me for this?”
“Oh, I am mad at you, son,” Gabriel replied. “But not for the reason you think. This, however funny it was, could’ve been taken as a serious offence were you anyone else but Adrien Agreste. This was too dangerous for not only your or Gabriel’s reputation but your soulmate’s too. You are, like it or not, a public figure and public figures can’t go about scandals like these. Understood?”
Adrien, understanding the gravity of his father’s words, nodded solemnly. “I understand. I apologize for today, father. I can’t take back what happened but I promise it won’t happen ever again.”
His father relaxed back into the seat with a small smile. “Good,” he said. “This does make me curious, though, about what could you’ve done to agitate them so much that they did that?”
“Err.”
“Did you forget to tell them about today?”
“...”
“Adrien?”
Adrien looked up at his father’s pinched look of suspicion and swallowed. There was no way this was going to end well, he thought remorsefully. The least the universe could’ve done for him was let him eat dinner first.
“It’s the first time they did something like this,” Adrien started honestly, “which is why I was so shocked. She usually draws simple flowers or doodles cute little things but other than that? Not really.”
“There must be a reason for them to do something so drastic, though, yes?”
“I, um, don’t know?” He ran a hand through his hair sheepishly.
Gabriel heaved a deep breath and in a tone that broke no argument, said, “Why don’t you start from the beginning, son?”
.
“So, you’re saying that you’ve never once talked to your soulmate,” Gabriel repeated, disbelief clear in his voice.
“Yes,” Adrien huffed, frustrated. His father has repeated this line about five times now.
“And that is because?”
“Because of you, of course!” He exclaimed. When his father gave him a rather surprised and offended expression, he huffed, “Oh, come on, surely you aren’t this blind?”
Apparently, he was.
“For fucks sake, father, you think I didn’t see what this bond did to you and mother? What Chloe’s mum and dad went through?” He ignored his father’s flinch and went on. “The before you and this you are two entirely different people. You used to love me,” he said, his voice cracking, making him even angrier. “I remember you being there for me when I was little. But then she went away and you, you—
“I can’t do the same, alright? Not to my soulmate, not to anyone I might have one day in my life. I can’t— I can’t make them go through what I went through because I couldn’t handle my emotions.”
“Adrien,” Gabriel said, stricken.
Shit, he didn’t mean to say this. None of this but, but he has been quiet for so long he really couldn’t help himself, alright. “I mean, do you even remember the last time you saw me? Not as an- an investment but as your son?” Adrien asked, his eyes stinging. “Not as your company’s lead model but a fucking human being with his own needs and wants because I fucking don’t.”
“I—Of course, I see you, Adrien!” Gabriel exclaimed, looking extremely frazzled. He obviously didn’t mean the conversation to go like this, Adrien thought with only a bit of guilt. But then, isn’t that how life goes; unexpected? “Of course, I care about you,” Gabriel continued. “What are you— how can you even
think—
” He took a shaky breath. “You’re my
son
,” the old man said. “There’s no one in the whole damn world I care about more than you!”
“Well.” He shrugged. “You’ve got a funny way of showing it.”
“And, about your mum and I? Things between us were far more complicated than you know. I should’ve told you, obviously, but I thought—” He sighed. “I never wanted to burden you with such things, Adrien.”
Adrien almost rolled his eyes.
His poor father, who, after years of ignorance and neglect, had the audacity to laugh at his son’s plight, on his face, ask intrusive questions, didn’t want to burden him. Oh, yeah. Believable.
Gritting his teeth in anger, he said, “no offence, sir, but if you really cared about me so much, you would’ve been here for me when I lost my fucking mother. Helped me understand what happened, not run away and hide in your office, leaving me with Natalie. So, please spare me this bullshit.
”
Gabriel blinked in surprise at his son's tone but didn't reply
. What a surprise, Adrien thought, snorting. He got up and for a second just stared at the slumped and defeated figure of his father, sighed, and walked towards his door. The butler should’ve sent his dinner by now. It was getting late!
“Adrien, wait,” Gabriel said. Adrien almost didn't.
“I, I realise now that what I did was wrong. I was so sure I was doing the right thing, you know, keeping you in the dark like that but I wasn't. Fear, it has a strange way of blinding us from the most obvious. What I believed, it doesn’t matter now. I only— I want you to forgive me, my son, but I would not ask for it today. You have your mother’s heart and you will forgive me even when I don’t deserve it. All I ask is another chance, Adrien, son, please.”
“Chance for what, father?”
“To be a better father to you. In my idiocy, I have not wronged just you but also your mother, my wife. I just- Please, Adrien. Just another chance.”
Adrien remained quiet for a long time. While he did desperately want to say yes because that's all he ever asked for, he knew the pain he will go through when his father forgets about him again and yeah.
“First you need to tell me what actually happened between you and mum.”
Though his answer wasn't a yes, his father's face lit up in victory. Motioning Adrien to take a seat across him, he began,
“
So, it all started when we were ten. I came home from school, crying when on the palm of my hand I saw—”
