“Hey Deku.” Izuku had been off in his own little world of hero research, when Katsuki had called for his attention. It was the end of school, the day before their weekend began.“What’s up Kacchan?” He asked when he looked up from his notebook. Katsuki was standing farther away from him than usual. He seemed.. Off? Nervous even? Which was weird, because rarely is he nervous. Or, at least shows it. Izuku could count on one hand the number of times Katsuki was expressive with that certain emotion. “I need to talk to you. Behind the school.”Izuku was growing confused. Weren’t they supposed to go to his house to do homework? “Sure?”With a nod, Katsuki left the room. Izuku hurriedly gathered up his things to chase after his childhood friend. Something was wrong. Katsuki was tense, not making eye contact. The middle schooler grew more and more worried the longer they walked, the longer the silence held. It was almost suffocating. When they reached the back of the school, the blonde still wouldn’t face him.Something was definitely wrong. “Kacchan?” Izuku started hesitantly. “Are… Are you okay?” His friend started to kick the dirt, still not turning around.“Kacchan-”“I think we should break up.” The words died in his throat. What? Break up? What did he mean? “W… What?” Was he hearing that correctly? His ears weren’t playing tricks with him, were they?“I said, I think we should break up.” This…. Was not happening. It had to be a dream. A terrible, terrible dream. Izuku felt like his heart stopped. His body felt cold. He felt physically sick, like he was going to throw up. All he could get out was a broken, “Why?” Katsuki clicked his tongue. Like this was a waste of time, like explaining why he wanted to break up was completely pointless. If Izuku didn’t feel emotionally numb at the moment, he would’ve gotten angry. “I just don’t think we should be together anymore.” After all this time… After all these years… After everything they’ve been through… Katsuki just wanted to end it? Just like that? That their relationship was something he could throw out like Sunday’s trash? Emotions began to resurface. “Tell me why Katsuki,” his tone wavered, but he tried to keep it steady. Katsuki sighed. “You’re quirkless-”Anger boiled inside of him. “That excuse would've worked if we were four. You’ve known I was quirkless for ten years, and that’s never stopped you before. You knew I was quirkless when we started dating. No, tell me the real reason-” “I don’t like you anymore.” The words cut him like a knife. Stabbed him twenty times in the chest and remained there, just to torture him. “You don’t… Like me anymore...” He repeated slowly. “I’ve never really liked you. This was all just messing around. I didn’t think you’d get serious.” Then it hit him. The confession last week. After they fooled around and Izuku confessed that he was in love with him. Katsuki didn’t say it back. He knew that Katsuki wasn’t ready to say it yet… But he thought… But he thought……. “I-I’ll take it back!” Izuku pleaded. “We can forget it happened!” God he was such an idiot ! The blonde shook his head, stuffing his hands further into his pockets. “It’s about time we stop this anyway. I’m going to be a hero. I don’t want my reputation to be ruined if people found out I was fooling around with a quirkless loser.” “I-I’m going to be a hero too-”“No you’re not!” Katsuki yelled so viciously that it surprised him. “You’re just some quirkless nobody. You’ll never be a hero.” Even though he’s heard that all of his life, hearing it now, from the person he loved ….It hurt. It hurt it hurt it hurt…. Tears welled in his eyes. How it took this long for him to start crying, he will never know. “Kacchan.. Please...” “Goodbye Deku.” Izuku watched the blonde walk away, feeling all of his strength zap out of him. He fell to his knees, staring at Katsuki’s retreating back while tears streamed down his face. He was in shock, that much was obvious. They have known eachother since they were babies and now… It was over. It was all over. The shy kisses, the warm cuddles that he knew Katsuki secretly liked, watching the hero news together, the walks through the park, the sleepovers, laughing at old hero movies they both enjoyed… Gone. Because they were over. Because Katsuki didn’t love Izuku like he thought he did. It made him wonder… If he did have a quirk… Would things be different? Izuku finally let himself break. Ugly sobbing. Cries of agony, of heartbreak. Just when he thought he found happiness, it was ripped away. Life was cruel. How much time had passed? Izuku didn’t know. It felt like a long while before he finally felt like he was in control again.Which, was far from the truth. Barely did he have his emotions in line. Barely was he able to contain them. He needed to get home. His mother would be worried. The walk home was long and torturous. Izuku wanted nothing more than to curl up on his bed and cry. Maybe sleep. That way, he’d be free from the pain in his heart. When he walked through the door, almost like she was a sixth sense for when something was wrong, his mother came to greet him. One look at his face, and she knew.“Oh my poor baby...” She said softly, rushing over to envelop him in her arms. And just like that, he broke again. It was almost worse than when he found out he didn’t have a quirk. He thought Katsuki loved him. That Katsuki accepted him, quirkless and all. Turns out it was just a joke. Them just messing around. First friend, first kiss, first boyfriend, first time,...First love. All a joke. Was any of it even real? Was all that he believed.. Really a lie? Izuku didn’t know if he wanted to know the answer or not.
