Holding one hand out to the warm glow of the campfire, Yuuri peered at the bundle of blankets lying to her right. Not being on watch, Chito was fast asleep. And snoring, a sing-song of whistling huffs.
Yuuri smiled to herself, ignoring the hollow rumbling of her stomach. They were running low on supplies. Again. It got harder with each passing month to find food, water, and a functioning refueling station.
"But at least we have more room to stretch," Yuuri mused, with a glance at the almost empty back of the parked Kettenkrad.
The wind picked up outside, howling through the city ruins and rattling the shed they had taken refuge in for the night. A sudden noise prompted Yuuri to look at Chito, who was now grumbling and twitching.
There was a dark spot on her cheek that hadn't been there before. Setting her rifle aside, Yuuri stood and moved closer. It was some kind of insect, its green and yellow body gleaming as if armored, with six barbed legs and huge antennae. Staring at the thing, it took a heroic effort of will for Yuuri to keep her first impulse in check, which was to annihilate it. But she managed. Barely. And only because she knew that Chito wouldn't appreciate being woken with a slap.
"Hm, what now?"
Chito grew ever more restless as tiny legs pricked her. Legs that looked so green, like the vegetables from the garden plot that grandfather had saved up for his 'special occasion stew'... Yuuri's mouth began to water at the memory.
She bent down until she could feel Chito's hot breath on her own face - and licked the insect off that pale skin with one long, wet swipe of her tongue.
Chito startled awake with a yelp. She jumped up and back, until she stood flattened against the nearest wall, wide-eyed and panting. "Yuu?! W-what--"
"Chii-chan, there was an insect on your cheek," Yuuri explained. She crushed the wriggling thing between her molars with a crack that made Chito flinch. A stinging bitterness flooded her mouth, but Yuuri chewed once, twice, and swallowed. "See? It's gone."
"Sometimes I just can't believe you," Chito muttered with a shudder.
"So, what about my reward?"
"...reward?"
Yuuri nodded. "I saved you from that big bad insect. I deserve a kiss."
"No."
Yuuri knew that no-nonsense tone far better that she would have liked. But now that she thought about it, the taste of those soft lips, with their hint of salt and gunpowder, was far sweeter than any food she had ever had. Well, except for that bar of chocolate.
"But Chii-chan...!"
"Maybe after you've brushed your teeth," Chito relented, far more quickly than expected.
"Aha!" Yuuri crowed. "So you did want to kiss again!"
Chito flushed and stuttered a denial before going back to sleep in a sulk but, Yuuri noted with glee, she didn't try to deny it.
