Just Decent

You couldn’t help but watch Wanda from the moment she entered the room, her hair up in a messy bun with flushed cheeks as she chugged water from the bottle in her hands, probably exhausted after another combat training with Natasha. The agent in question soon followed behind her in a much better state, not a single strand out of place in her short ponytail.
The sight brought a grin to your face, a small chuckle slipping under another slow sip of your coffee.

“Is there a problem, (Y/N)?” Thinking the laugh was directed at her, Wanda glared daggers at you as Natasha tried to pass her a fresh bottle from the fridge - the ingredients to make a smoothie in her other hand as the sharpness in the younger woman’s voice caught the others’ attention.

Still too early to register anything - even her voice directed at you, you studied her face for another moment, your mind wandering those hidden feelings you made sure to keep locked away.

Thinking just how cute Wanda looked - even annoyed - a small line forming between her furrowed brows.

I could never have a problem with you around...you’re the best human I’ve ever met and my day becomes a hundred times better when I see that smile or hear your laugh in my ears, even if I’m not the cause. Wanda Maximoff, I love you - I love you - I love you! Oh man, I think I like you more than anyone I’ve ever...and wow - when you’re pouting your lips look so…

Your train of thoughts broke when Bucky coughed and elbowed your side so you could answer, realizing that you probably got distracted by your own thoughts, leaving you more confused than before, surprised to see all eyes on you (whether directly or discreetly), “I’m sorry, what?”

Bucky wanted nothing more in that moment than to admit you were friends, cringing at how dense you had to be to get caught staring at your crush, and be unable to step out of your thoughts when she actually talked to you. (It had to be in your top 5 densest moments - easily.)

He groaned as both he and Natasha watched as Wanda’s eyes began to glow and stomp over to the table where the two of you sat, still too early to even think about trying to stop or prevent a fight amongst the team.

“I said - do you have a problem with me?”

Your mouth moved before you could think, a small shrug and smile pulling at your lips as you answered her with a quick, “I actually think you’re pretty decent.”

The answer was short - awkward - but not...horrible. Bad enough to make your two onlookers groan in their heads, but it wasn’t anything that would give Wanda any idea that you had a problem with her. It wasn’t your fault that you weren’t sure what to say to your teammate you spent more time daydreaming about than interacting with - your only saving grace being that you rarely ever openly interacted with the others aside from Bucky and Natasha, still too wary of letting your relationships be openly known to any wandering eyes from your undercover days.

But short as it was, the answer shocked Wanda to speechlessness, the red glow fading immediately, an unheard of fondness (to her) hidden deep under your usual steady tone, Natasha recovering first from the exchange with a laugh to continue the conversation, “that’s a compliment from (Y/N) if I ever heard one.”

Having broken the silence, Bucky moved next, slapping your shoulder with a grin on his face, shaking his head in disbelief, “ever the charmer.”

“What did I say? Why are you two laughing?” Finally peeling your gaze away from the object of your affection to stare at your friends, they realized just how oblivious you were to the mood in the room, laughing even harder as they went back to their own mornings, too preoccupied with bothering Bucky to notice Wanda wander back to Natasha to help her with their smoothies, watching you out of the corner of her eye.

Even if she didn’t have the same experiences with espionage as the rest of you, Wanda could tell that you were hiding something from her, she just couldn’t tell what, at least, not yet.

As you finished off what was left in your mug with a short coughing fit, Bucky doubled over again in laughter, snickering at how many times you’ve embarrassed yourself in front of your crush in one morning.

“Fuck off Buck, keep laughing as I choke on my coffee instead of helping - I’ll remember that.” Your cheeks burned in embarrassment as you stood up from your chair and rolled your eyes, kicking the legs of his lightly on your way out. “I got a meeting with Fury and Maria - I’ll be back later.”

This made him stop laughing just enough for him and Natasha to yell quick goodbyes, both of them moving their heads just enough to catch Wanda watching your retreating figure down the hall.

“Y’know, Wanda, if you’re really that curious about what (Y/N) thinks of you that badly that you’ll check them out so blatantly without saying goodbye, can’t you just...I dunno...read the vibes from them or however your powers work.” Bucky offered the idea before taking a sip of his own lukewarm coffee, hoping Natasha would catch on and actually make some sense of his advice.

With the younger woman’s back turned, Natasha shot a look at Bucky before continuing what he was trying to say, “I think he means to say that if you’re really afraid that they have a problem with you, a quick peek into their head wouldn’t hurt?”

Wanda pursed her lips, unsure how she felt about being called “pretty decent” to her face...annoyed? Disappointed? Maybe grateful that it wasn’t anything bad?

“...I suppose you’re both right.”

“Goddamn right we are, might even be happy at what you find out,” Bucky mumbled under his breath, lifting the cup back up to his mouth, but Wanda heard him loud and clear, piquing her interest even more in what you had to think about her - making up her mind to take a peek into your thoughts the next time she saw you.

The day dragged on without anyone hearing a word from you, returning to the Compound long after the sun had already set, long after the rest of the team finally agreed to start dinner without you after a vague message to Tony that read: sufferin w F eat w/out me

Nearly an hour after everyone had finished eating, you showed up to the Compound looking worse for wear, eyebags heavier than usual with a small frown resting on your face - worrying Wanda more than she would care to admit, Steve calling out to you before she could even think of doing the same, “everything alright with Fury?”

“If you mean the Director using my performance review as an excuse to nag me for all our property damage in the Compound and agency from pranks gone wrong and break-in attempts by supervillains then yeah...everything’s just decent Cap - feelin’ great.” It was the most you’ve been able to talk all day, the frustration and annoyance breaking your usual mask, groaning as you dropped into the closest chair to eat the leftovers left on the table, “I’m just starving.”

They knew to give you your space to cool off, so the team reluctantly turned back to whatever series they had put on for the night, allowing you to shovel the last bits of pasta and bread onto your plate as your eyes wandered around the room, stopping only when they found Wanda.

And much like your eyes, your mind began to wonder - what did she think about your answer to her question earlier - if you messed up - if she was mad at you because you messed up...but if she was, she looks so cute when she’s mad…

From your spot on the table, you could only see the back of Wanda’s head, unable to see the blush that slowly crept up her neck and cheeks as she looked into your mind - embarrassed to be trespassing on your thoughts even though they were all about her.

Wanda was never aware of how much you thought about your interactions, of how careful you were when thinking about what to talk about with anyone. She felt bad for being annoyed at you in the morning over nothing, especially seeing you come back much more exhausted than before, pulling your eyes away from the back of her head to focus on your plate, playing with the food in front of you. Your thoughts still dancing around her.

Did she like the show that was playing on the screen? Everyone’s laughed but her, but maybe she would watch it with you again from the beginning if you asked? But then again...how would she react to that? Would Wanda be happy to get a chance to spend time with you? Like how you are whenever you’re able to talk to her without messing up, or would something be wrong like this morning again? That’s even if she would agree...she has no reason to though. What if you could kiss her however many times you liked...take her on dates...would that all be okay?

When you finally looked up from your food, you were shocked to see Wanda standing beside you, arms crossed and a blush on her cheeks, her voice muffled under the rest of the team’s laughter. “I would say yes you know.”

Having your stream of thoughts broken by the one you were fantasizing about made your throat go dry, not sure what to say, cheeks burning after being caught so off guard, “I’m sorry, what?”

“I would say yes to watching this show with you, and I’m sorry I yelled at you this morning for nothing, and I would be more than happy if you took me on dates and...kissed me.” Wanda avoided your eyes as she wore a shy pout on her face, focusing on some random corner of the table as she basically admitted to reading your mind for the past few minutes of your pro-Wanda rant.

You weren’t sure how to react, but the confession left you lightheaded and burning up, sneaking a peek at her pout before blacking out on the table - the exhaustion finally catching up to you at the worst possible moment.

When you came to, sunlight was pouring into your room, resting alongside a familiar mess of hair on your chest, holding your hand without a care in the world.

“Wanda?”

Hearing your voice, she quickly shot up, still too sleepy to try to smother her relieved smile to see you awake and talking, “glad to see you’re okay, you fainted after you came back home...how are you feeling?”

The memories from last night came flooding back to you, all the things she said before you blacked out, mentally kicking yourself when all you could manage was a quiet, “just decent.”

You couldn’t meet her eyes, dropping your head to hide the growing smile pulling at your lips, your mind wandering just once more.

Just decent? I mean so much more than that - so much more waking up to see you by my side holding my hand and with a worse case of bedhead that I’ve ever seen...wish you would just kiss me good morning though.

Wanda let out a small giggle before grinning and leaning forward to pull you into a kiss, slow and savoring every second, “you could’ve just asked using your words, you know.”

“Hm...but I think what we have going on right now is working just decent,” you laughed into a second kiss and pulled her into the bed with you, eager to make up for all those wasted moments and long daydreams when you could’ve been kissing her like this. “No need to read my mind anymore to make sure I love you though, I’ll tell you those three words however many times you want.”
