As per usual you sat on the roof of your apartment complex staring up at the starless sky. You hated that you couldn't see the stars, but when living in the city this should be expected. More than anything you wanted a place where no traffic could be heard. No nosy neighbors that gawked at you. Nobody but you for miles. Just you and the stars shining above. The thought made you smile."You're always up here all by yourself." You turned to the voice seeing one of the boys who lived in the building start to walk through the service door. Recognizing the spiky green hair you met the eyes of the Quirkless kid who lived on the floor beneath you."I like it up here." You said matter of factly bringing your attention back to the nothingness you were staring into. You hoped he would just go away. It would be easier if he just went away. "Is it alright if-" "No." You interrupted, and almost felt bad glancing back to see the look of shock and hurt on the boys face, almost. "Leave me be.” The stunned boy stuttered at first, but ultimately left without another word. Nobody could abandon you if you are alone to begin with. It has to be this way. It wasn't long until you yourself climbed back down, and into the window of your bedroom. ------You didn't see the boy for another two days. Except for maybe in the lobby once or twice when you went with your dad to get groceries. You couldn’t meet his eyes. That night when you climbed up to the roof he was already sitting there typing away on his phone. You wanted to climb back down, but this was your special place, and he wasn't going to scare you away. You sat as far away from him as you could. He noticed your arrival looking up from his phone to give you a beaming smile. Even though you were annoyed because he, in your mind, was intruding you could feel yourself softening. You couldn’t bring yourself to say the nasty comments brimming at the surface to make him leave. First time for everything they say. You guessed he just had that effect on people. "I'm Midoriya Izuku." He said after a bit of silence. Instead you chose not to say anything. This boy, Midoryia, wasn’t going to get to you. The two of you sat in silence for the rest of the night. -----This continued for four more nights before a conversation was started. You had noticed he was looking beat up. Despite not being close to him you couldn’t help that you were mad. He smiled at you like he always did, and you just scowled at him. "Hold on." You had said before climbing back down ignoring his confused look as you went to grab the first aide kit that sat in your room. "You don't have to do that! My mom already took care of it." You ignored him and re-bandaged everything anyway. Your fingers brushing against a small bruise on his cheek. "Who did it?" You asked him looking into his eyes for the first time. He blushed and started sputtering out a half assed excuse."Izuku." You said seriously, and he frowned looking away from you. "Who hurt you?" "He's a childhood friend of mine. It's just how Kacchan is. I'm-Well...he beats me up, and-and calls me Deku because it looks like useless." You sighed brushing the stray tears on his face. "Are you going to tell me why he beats you up?" You already knew, everyone knew, of the boy who was quirkless. For some reason you just needed him to say it. To pretend it was news to you. "It's because I'm Quirkless and a waste of space and-" "So what?" You said cutting him off, and he looked at you with wide eyes. "You're not a waste of space Midoriya. Having a Quirk isn't always that great." Realizing how insensitive that sounded you blushed and tried to back track. "I mean I think you're more useful than I am! I'm not as calculating as you are and my Quirk is kind of...frustrating. I don’t know what to use it for, and it's really embarrassing honestly." You played with a stray piece of hair, and continued to ramble about how great you thought he was although you only knew things from school because his mother is always bragging about his grades like any proud mother. "I can't even change a light bulb. Can you change a light bulb? I twisted it too much and it shattered when I turned on the light. Can you believe that?" You hadn't noticed, but in your haste to cover up your remark Izuku started to cry. "Hey don't cry. I'm trying to make you feel better. Am I not doing it right? I don't usually have to do these things." You trailed off opting to wait for the boy to calm himself down when he pulled you in for a hug, and tried not to sob uncontrollably. You smiled feeling like you did something right. "It's okay to cry Izuku." You reassured him. You spent two more hours holding him like that, and when he fell asleep you carried him to his apartment. You smiled at Inko who had come to the door apologizing for waking her up. After putting Izuku in his bed Inko bombarded you with questions and reassured her he had just been crying and assumed he tired himself out. She scolded you like a good parent would about being up past ten, but thanked you for being there for Izuku.-----“(Y/N)” You said your name out of the blue. Izuku and you had been sitting on the roof in awkward silence for quite a bit. For some reason the silence wasn’t comfortable anymore, and you needed to fill it.“Wh-What?” Izuku looked at you bewildered.”I didn’t tell you my name when you introduced yourself. That’s my name.”“I think it’s really pretty (Y/N).” You turned to look at him. This was the first time you had been so close in the daylight. He is...Izuku is adorable. You blinked in surprise wondering how you never saw it before. Caught off guard was an understatement. You cleared your throat. “Umm...thank you.” Your response was a little forced and awkward. You weren’t used to having conversation with anyone other than your dad and teachers. The fact you now realized Izuku was cute made it that much more difficult. That smile having not left your thoughts quite yet. Meeting his eyes once more he seemed to be studying you. Admiring you, maybe? You forced the thought back as quickly as you could, locking it away, and tossing the key. No. You thought, absolutely not. He’s going to leave. He’ll leave just like mom did. The little voice in the back of your head reminded you. You turned from Izuku clenching your jaw. Just before you could bolt his voice cut through the uncertainty like a knife through butter. The softness held you place.”I appreciate what you did the other night. I don’t have anyone to talk to like that. Just my mom.” His voice got a little tight as he said that. “I see you by yourself at school constantly. We aren’t in the same class so it was hard to approach you. Always passing each other by, but never saying a word. I knew you were coming here for as long as I could remember. I was afraid to...to come up here to talk.” He paused, and your heart pounded in your chest. What was he trying to say? “I thought maybe we were the same. Alone. Wanting to reach out, but not knowing how. I thought I screwed it up by just coming up here. I’m glad you didn’t ask me to leave. I expected you to, and I would’ve left. I want you to know that I would’ve come back again and again.” He looked at you then. Really looked at you, and you could see he was struggling like you were."What you said to me last night Y/N, that's the nicest thing anyone has said to me. I also think it's the most you have ever spoken to me. My mom said that you had to carry me to bed because I fell asleep." "I-umm....” The sincerity of his words dug deep. For once in your life you considering letting your walls down. Don’t the little voice threatened, but you ignored it. “You’re welcome.” You scratched your head trying to be nonchalant about everything. “You're not all that heavy either, but I have to admit I was terrified to carry you down the fire escape. Please don't fall asleep like that ever again. It's too much for little ol' me." "You could have woken me up." He said with a shrug, and a small smile on his face. He seemed really relieved that his words didn’t scare you away. You didn’t want to linger on that too much. "You looked so peaceful. I didn't want to wake you up." You smiled at him. A real smile this time not that little forced smile out of politeness. That was the first time Izuku felt something in his chest when it came to you. Your speech last night may have been the root cause of the seeds being planted. Neither of you realized then that it was this moment that would complete your friendship, and make you realize having company isn't so bad. "So what is your Quirk?" Izuku asked, and you blushed not wanting to show him. "Please don't make me show you." "I'm just curious is all. I'm not going to judge you. I mean one of the kids in my class can take his eye balls out! How weird is that?" "That's...gross. Okay fine, but you're not allowed to laugh." Then you took a deep breath, and slowly began to shrink. Until you were pocket sized, and claimed into Izuku's hand. "Woah!" He said his voice booming in your ear and you cringed. "That's so cool. You know it's like the opposite of Mt Lady! Did you see her debut the other day? So cool!" "Yeah I saw it." You said deactivating your Quirk.Speaking of Mt Lady’s debut you remembered seeing on the news what happened earlier today with the sludge villain, and after a moment you felt you needed to ask. "That boy on the news today. The one you decided to rush in and save. That was Kacchan wasn't it?" Izuku didn't look at you, and you barely heard the whispered "Yeah." That fell from his lips, and the two of you were back to the regular silence and small talk. ------You knew something was different with Izuku. He was more tired than usual. You only saw him in passing, and he hadn't come up to the roof in, what? Three days now? You sighed feeling satisfied that you finally had that alone time you wanted, but you were also sad. You couldn't feel the warmth of Izuku's presence, feel the happiness of his laugh when you said a dumb dad joke that wasn't even funny, and you were even starting to miss his mumbling when he was analyzing a Quirk. You loved those moments, and thought it was cute how he seemed to forget everything around him. You missed Izuku a lot, and found yourself despising all the alone time you had wished for. The phrase careful what you wish for was truly something to keep in mind. Did you do something wrong? -----Ten days. It had been ten whole days since you've seen Izuku, and before making your way out the window you decided to go the long way. Maybe you would see him in the hallway. You did, but you felt your heart constrict at the blatant dismissal you were given. "I'm sorry Y/N I know I haven't seen you a whole lot, but I have been working really hard." With a wave of his hand he was in his apartment, and you were dumbstruck. You didn't blame him. You could see the sweat, you heard his labored breathing, could see his tired eyes, but you still teared up. He didn't even say goodnight, or ask how you were. You didn't go up to the roof that night. Or the following two nights. I told you. The little voice in your head mocked you. Continued to torment you the next few days. -----It had been almost a month now. You had seen Izuku in the hallway again, and he smiled at you like he usually would. You had almost forgotten the feeling of abandonment creeping up on you. You should’ve listened to me. He left just like mom. He never cared. She didn’t either. The voice was there more frequently now. You forced that small smile out of politeness putting your hands behind your back looking him over. You wanted him to leave, and the thought tore your heart up."The U.A. placement test is coming up in a few months." He said trying to bring back what both of you had started to grow. Those seeds hadn't died, they felt a little dry, but it was pouring right now, and they soaked up every last drop. "I have no doubt you'll get in." You said pulling away from him. Hope flittered around in your heart when he reached for you, but his phone rang. The obnoxious 'All Might' ringtone reminding you of reality. Izuku didn't answer for three seconds touching your cheek apologetically mumbling a ‘I’m so sorry’ before answering his phone as he turned away. Don’t let him back in. You watched until his back disappeared. You continued to stare at the wall at the end of the hallway for a few seconds. His changing appearance didn't slip by you. You wondered if someone was training him, or if he was training himself. You wanted to slap yourself when you wished he wouldn't get accepted just so things could go back to the way they were. You hated yourself for thinking like that.
Good luck.
------It had been four months now, and you laid on the concrete roof of the apartment complex. The cold was creeping up on you, and the solitude felt like a blanket draped over your shoulders. Even your dad had been gone for a few weeks now on a business trip. Which was nothing new, but now you were used to Izuku filling that void, but he wasn't here. He hasn’t been here for months. What did you expect? The voice seemed to be laughing at you now. The thought left a bitter taste in your mouth. You listened to the wind blow the fallen leaves of the dying plants brought up here by the elderly tenant in the apartment across from yours. You stood up feeling the need to stretch your legs. You sighed at the feeling of your sore muscles protesting from laying on concrete for so long. You were in a more urban part of the city, but you could still see the busyness of the main strip from the roof. You stepped up to the edge feeling the breeze against your skin, but wished it was a nice flowery smell instead of the city assaulting your senses. You looked down at the ground, and couldn't stop your thoughts from wandering. Would it hurt to hit the ground? You shook your head, but didn't pull away from the ledge. Opting to indulge the race of adrenline that coursed through your veins when you wobbled. There was a smile on your face, and in that moment you reached out for the stars you couldn't see. You reached out for a new life for yourself. You no longer wanted the one you had. Silently prayed to a higher power to take you away. You wondered if that’s how death worked, and for a moment you weren’t scared anymore. You almost let yourself slip from the edge. A sharp intake of breath captured you're attention, and you almost cursed when the noise startled you, your body pitching forward. There was a crunch of feet rushing across the gravel as you realized someone had witnessed what just happened. Before you could think you were yanked back, and pressed against a much smaller frame. The two of you crashing to the ground, but you ignored the sting in your body. Unable to form a sentence you just blinked bringing yourself back down from whatever weird adrenline rush you just put yourself through. "I wasn't going to jump." You said after a moment recognizing the green head of hair in the dim lighting. "Izuku." You could see he was shaking. His eyes were wide, and you didn't know how to explain yourself. You knew what that looked like. It didn't take a genius to guess what he was thinking. He had wrapped his arms around you, and anytime you moved he would hold you closer. It was almost suffocating, but you wanted more. You wanted so much more, and found yourself practically tearing his shirt to get closer. You didn't realize you had been crying. Didn't realize how much you became dependant on his presence. Those small seeds had started to burst from the soil. You just continued to mumble apologies burying your face in his shirt. You had a flashback of your mom leaving, and never returning. You thought of his back as he walked down the hallway. You had been so sucked into yourself you didn't know how dark your thoughts had turned. He just started to run his fingers through your hair, and whispered words of comfort that weren't being registered. You were just hiccuping now wiping tears with the sleeve of your free hand the other one still had a fist full of his shirt. He had sat both of you up, and you clung on to him refusing to let go."I'm sorry." He said after awhile. Your tears had dried, your face still felt too warm, but you had calmed down now. Small sniffles could be heard, and you desperately needed a tissue, but neither of you moved. "Why are you apologizing?" Your voice broke as you asked, refusing to move talking into his shirt. "I wasn't here for you. I haven't been here, or-or seen you in months-" You knew he was about to go on a rant, and begin to mumble apologies, but you just put a finger to his lips silencing him. "It's okay Izuku. You're here now." "No Y/N it’s not okay." The sharpness of his words made you freeze. “You’re hurting, and I’m sorry. I’m sorry I wasn’t paying attention.” Both of you were silent for a moment.”Tell me what I can do to help you.” He whispered cradling you so close you nearly started crying again.”I don’t have the answer to that.” You whispered back, “but for now I’d like to lay down and get some sleep.”He nodded picking you up bridal style with ease. You clung to him beginning to protest, but the look on his face made you stop. Carefully he carried you down the fire escape, but before he reached the bottom you stopped him."Hold on. My room's right here." You said pointing at your bedroom window. He set you down keeping his hands close, but not touching. You opened the window and slipped inside. Izuku hesitated rocking back on his heels, but you just grabbed his hand tugging him towards the window. "Please?" He nodded and climbed in with little difficulty. You were already in your pajamas wearing a pair of loose fitting shorts, and a tank top. Pulling off your shoes you tossed them towards your closet climbing into your bed while Izuku placed his nicely by the door. "Is this really okay?" He asked nervously playing with his fingers. You played with the edge of your comforter. "My dad is away on business, and...well I don't want to be alone. If you’re not comfortable with staying the night with me I understand. You can come check on me in the morning.” You offered an alternative, but you wanted him to stay so badly. He pondered for a moment causing your anxiety to grow. Resolved to stay the night Izuku slid into bed next to you. For a moment the two of you laid down in silence. Both of your hearts racing with how close you were to each other. The skin burning where the two of you touched. Shifting to be more comfortable Izuku held his hand up for you to hold. No words needed to be said, but you got the message. Entwining your fingers with his a peacefulness settled over you. That voice in your head didn’t have anything to say now. In your sleepy haze you turned to face him curling into his side like you belonged there.”Is this okay?” You asked him.”Yeah.” He whispered, slipping the arm that was trapped out from under you in order to pull you closer. You knew your problems wouldn’t be solved overnight, but being close to Izuku like this, having made unspoken promises like he has, you found yourself wanting to work towards solving them. The first step would be to trust in him, and open up. You wanted to say more, but Izuku’s soft snores made you close your eyes and follow him into sleep. Those seeds that had started to grow were now budding flowers that were sure to bloom.
