Charlotte Clain, Queen of Pallendria, has been stricken with grief.
Her husband, King Marcos, was lost at sea, presumably killed in a great storm which swept the western coast for miles.
Hundreds of condolences were gifted to the now lone-ruler, but nothing could take back the love of her life, and father to her young son, Lancelot. She vowed to never find love again.Only a few months later, the neighboring country of Arus was filled with bittersweet remorse. Their new queen died in labor delivering her first and only son. They say the king, Theodrin, mourned for years after. His face changing to a distant and forlorn expression. Layla had been his dearest love, one who he could never forget, nor replace. When he first cradled his son, Keitherdin, in his arms, he swore to never marry again.Under the threats of war, the two monarchs came together in grief, binding their kingdoms close in a pact.
They knew that their kingdoms were too weak to last under the looming threat of the Galra empire, and decided together to bind the kingdoms as one. Under the protected gaze of their parents, the young Pallendria-Arus youth were to be raised as true kings, and at age eighteen, joined together in marriage. It was the only way to keep the people, and their sons, safe. Eleven years have past since...
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Lancelot to some, was a troublesome boy, one who pulled pranks and stole sweets from the kitchens —A nuisance to the kingdom until he grew to be a man.To others he was the friendly lad who helped the palace servants with their work and did whatever he was told.Lancelot was neither of those.Of course Lance caused trouble, it's what children do best. —But his charm redeemed him. So when Lance pulled the crazy stunt of jumping off the castle wall and into a nearby pond in late winter, none were too alarmed. If it wasn't for the gardener's son, Hunk, the chances are Lance would have always been neck deep in some sort of trouble.Lance would frequently recall the day he realized how much he relied Hunk.
“It was the year with snow well into April, the day I jumped into the pond and he pulled me out of the freezing water, ‘hauled me to the nearest fireplace. A savior.”
Lance still couldn't remember what he thought about jumping off the castle wall was so intriguing. But he would always defend himself by saying that it was an awesome jump.Hammond, or Hunk Garret was a tall, bulky boy. Very kind at heart and a remarkable archer. He and his family lived a short way from the castle, a minute’s walk to a small cobblestone and brick house that housed the family of five. The relationship between the boys was none too uncommon, they sparred their wits and built bows and arrows from tree branches. They'd even convinced a few of the guards to assist them into making a tree fort. Within a few weeks they had built a fort large enough to fit five and plenty of storage. There they stashed the apples and berries they had picked from the surrounding forest, and read books that Lance borrowed from the palace library.Sometimes the boys would allow the other children of the palace to join them, up in the tree fort or down beneath to play war games. Hunk did his best to be patient and made sure every child was heard, and Lance tried to set the same example. The children of the palace were a group of seven, consisting of Lance, Hunk, Hunk's two younger siblings, Akiah and Jirosh, two children belonging to one of the palace cooks, and the single son of the palace Steward. As the minors, the children looked up to the boys a great deal, even more so since Lance was their future king. To Lancelot the children of the palace were like his younger brothers and sisters. But now instead of climbing trees or throwing stones into the river, Lancelot was trapped inside his study.Looking back, Lance noted that had been days since his last outing with Hunk and the children. Every hour the Meeting Day drew closer and Lance's mentor had kept him shut in and nailed reviews on etiquette and courtesy into his skull. He hadn't a moment alone for ages, it seemed his mentor had him rehearsing the prime elements of formal greetings in his sleep. But now it was early morning in the castle. All of the servants were out doing the washing, or scrubbing down the main hall from floor to ceiling. Finally, Lance was alone. Running free though the halls, staring up at the polished wood molding that decorated the palace ceilings. They were all ornately carved, each corner and crevice was a part of some greater art, it was absolutely mesmerizing. He followed the polished curves in the wood, twisting and winding to create waves and branches with budding flowers. The carvings were one of the hundreds of mysterious details hidden throughout the Palace. Art was everywhere, it would always be what Lance loved most about his home.Grinning, Lance tore his gaze from above to the empty halls in front of him. He skipped down the hall, casting glances at the doors he passed and trying to recall what was behind each one. Many of these rooms were the household servant's quarters, and Lancelot knew most of them by name.Castle Pallendria had a large staffing of course, but it felt close-knit. Maybe even unusually so, but when Charlotte had insisted everyone attend dinners toghether, that meant everyone. “The best ruler is a compassionate one.” She would always say.Lance continued to pass doorways and mirrors, halls and staircases, reveling his freedom. He was twelve years old now —almost a man! He could roam the halls of his castle whenever he wished. No teacher could tell him what to do!The heels of his shoes clicked against polished marble as he turned to a magnificent golden archway and into the enormous ballroom. The ballroom was by far Lance's favorite place in the palace, it had the highest ceilings, reaching so far up he could barely make out the cherubs in the mural above. The tall windows let the sunlight stream in through undrawn drapes, making the pale walls glow. Lance walked out into the middle of the empty room, noticing a few of the high glass windows were pushed open, letting in a clean breeze that swept over the freshly polished floors.Like everything else, the ballroom was being prepared for the Meeting Day.The events that would follow the night would shape the rest of his life. Taking a breath, Lance stared out, smiling, into the room that would be soon filled with music, dancing, and people.Excitement shot up his spine and made him shudder. This is is what he was meant to do.With a warm feeling in his heart, he strayed from his thoughts, and began taking long lunges and strides across the empty room. He plié'd into a wobbly pirouette and laughed as he stumbled. The sounds echoed quietly, and the wind whistled.Dancing had always been something that Lance loved. He began when he was only seven years old, inspired by a group of traveling dancers who had stopped and preformed in the very ballroom where he stood. It was an incredible ballet accompanied by a quartet of musicians. After the performance Lance went up to the lead dancer, a young woman, and began bombarding her with questions. She answered them all with equal excitement. The following morning Lance was granted with a full day lesson. He was beaming at the start, but after the third or fourth hour he was frustrated. He wanted to dance like the dancers the night before, beautifully, elegantly. Yet he teetered and fell and slipped in a constant fumbling loop. He wasn’t graceful in the least! When he voiced his frustration, the dancer just gave him a kind but firm smile and told him that when she began ballet she was only nine years old, she began exactly as frustrated as he was, and now at sixteen she had worked hard for seven years building strength and flexibility. And if he, at seven, started off strong he might be just twice as good as she was at sixteen.
“Skill is created through practice and commitment.”
Later Lance would come to realize that that moment truly inspired him to work as hard as he had, to become the best he could be.Five years later at age twelve, Lance’s ballet instructor was amazed by his dedication and perseverance. It was this dedication that now allowed Lance to strut gracefully around the empty ballroom, to kick at the air, or take a risqué leap. The music of an invisible orchestra filled his mind, he stepped, twirled, and jumped to the beat of the song his instructor would play on the piano whenever they practiced, he felt so free. He landed a final leap as the rétardando drew on. He pulled himself into fourth position dramatically as the song in his mind slowed once more, and ended. Then he heard an applause."Beautiful Lancelot, but save yourself for this evening please.""Wha-What!?" Lance sputtered, breaking out of his pose. He spun around to see the tall figure of his mother, smiling warmly from the other side of the hall.Queen Charlotte was a tall, thin, and tan skinned woman with long ringlets of dark hair. The spitting image of Lancelot himself, with the same light blue eyes and upturned nose. She spoke with a fond smile on her lips."Not to worry dear! I come here to watch you sometimes. You're very good." She said, walking out onto the dance floor.Lance remembered his manners, "Oh, T-thank you." He said, his face burning red."It's alright I won't tell anyone," She laughed, "If you promise me a dance tonight.""Oh- Yes of course! After all who could turn down the Queen!" Lance joked, relieved. They both laughed, and a comfortable silence fell. After a moment of hesitancy Lance asked, “Mother, what do you suppose tonight will be like?""I think tonight will be... Magical," Charlotte said, her eyes glided to the open doors at the side of the ballroom, she stepped foreward and gestured him to follow. Lance contentedly obliged. "You are meeting your future husband after all."She smiled down at him as they passed through the glass door, and out onto the stone veranda.Lance worried his sleeve, "But what if I don't like him? What if he's rude? Or mean?"Charlotte sighed as they strode down the garden path, "Lance how many times have I told you not to worry? He's a very nice boy. You two will get along just fine —And I've heard from King Theordrin that he is quite a fan of horses." She added."I know it's only that... I wish I got to choose." Lance sighed, he felt guilty admitting it, but he was ...frustrated.Charlotte stopped before a patch of hyacinths, and looked down at Lance with fierce love in her eyes. They were just like his."I understand Lance," She said, "I too wish you could choose your own path but, this treaty needs to follow through. You need to marry Prince Ketherdin and save both Pallendria and Arus. I know you understand Lance, and I'm sorry I have to place this burden upon you." Charlotte gave Lances shoulder a tight squeeze, and the worst of his anxiety subsided.Lance took a deep breath, and promised in that moment, staring out into the gardens with his mother by his side, to try his hardest to work with Ketherdin when he and King Theordrin arrived. It was even possible Ketherdin felt the same. He would do it for his Mother, and he would do it for Pallendria. ... The morning and noon of the Meeting Day passed before Lance could comprehend what had happened.Immediately after Lancelot and Charlotte returned from the gardens they were ushered off to their rooms by Tamerlain, Charlotte’s Court-Lady, to prepare for the evening. The Meeting would be one of the biggest events to happen in Pallendria in over a decade —Since Lancelot had been born. The people had waited eleven years since the King of Arus and the Queen of Pallendria first announced the engagement. Marking a hopeful end to the tensions of the Great Eastern War. The union of the two countries would create decades of prosperity. It was an ingenious plan, the only thing to do now was hope. But Lance wasn't ready.Tonight was to meet the boy he was to marry, and his anxieties were gnawing him to the core. He had stumbled when his mentor asked him to repeat his formal terms.Minutes later Lance stood in front of the mirror in his dress room, staring at the dark blue ensemble that he was to wear.It was a sleeved tunic that fitted at his waist with a gold chain, the tunic was finely woven with sky blue silk, and the stitches patterned like waves. Underneath he wore a pair of thick navy tights, knee high leather boots, and a deep blue cape to trail his footsteps.Lance spent a long time admiring himself in the mirror, he felt powerful. Like the king his father was.It was only an hour until dusk now, all of the preparations had been set and perfected. The servants and cooks had left to busy the kitchen and dining room, and the hallways were empty when his mentor escorted him to the entrance hall. The entrance hall was one of the most impressive rooms in the entire castle —Next to the ballroom of course. The ceilings stood high to accommodate the dozen chandeliers and for an echo to resonate when a person of power spoke. It felt like a cathedral, the sculpted walls and ceilings encased a feeling of holiness.Queen Charlotte sat on her throne in a beautiful silk dress, one of her finest. Lance had only seen her wear it once before and it was certainly a sight to behold. The lace trimmed across the collar and the cuffs of her long sleeves. The breast embroidered with small sapphires and diamonds, contrasting to the yellow gold accents hidden in the lace border. Some people called Charlotte the Sapphire Queen, Lance understood why. She was absolutely magnificent.Tearing his eyes away from the queen, Lance surveyed the hall. Although the dozens of palace servants stood at the sides of the hall and the guards flanked entrances, it seemed empty. He finally reached his place next to his mothers throne, where he was to stand in silence as Charlotte and King Theordrin exchanged formalities.Lance mused the thought of Charlotte and Theordrin marrying instead of him and Ketherdin, but he then sourly recalled why that wasn't to be...His thoughts were pushed away by a page's announcement.
"The King and Prince of Arus approach!"
Queen Charlotte then spoke, rising from her throne. Her dress sparkling and shimmering in the candle light, "Positions, everyone! Be mindful that these are Kings and should be treated with as much respect of that which you grace me. These are the future kings of Pallendria-Arus! But most important of all, tonight is of celebration, all are welcome to dance and rejoice this evening!" The crowd of servants cheered, and Queen Charlotte smiled,"Now let us greet our guests with love in our hearts! Rejoice the kingdom of Pallendria!" She shouted across the hall, smiling even brighter as the people of the palace cheered. She sat back in her place, composing herself as the crowd returned back to their respectful silence. She shot a reassuring glance at Lance, making an overwhelming sense of ease cloud over his mind.
"The King and Prince of Arus have arrived!"
Lance took a deep breath, everything was going to be fine.He turned and stood to face the entrance of the Castle of Lions. It was time to meet his betrothed.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
"Greetings and salutations to the King and Prince of Arus!"Lancelot watched as the heavy wooden doors were pulled open, revealing five Arusians at its threshold.Applause sounded as they strode into the palace —Three of the figures stepped off to the side of the hall. Leaving two to walk down the long navy carpet. It stretched on like a river through a forest of onlookers. The sailors swan upstream.Lance could easily recognize King Theordrin from a distance —They had met before— He was very tall, and muscular in a lean way. He wore his stringy hair low to the jawline, framing his worn face. A thin scar cut vividly through his left eyebrow. He wore a thin velvet tunic of crimson, the color of Arus, tied at the waist with a silver belt. The collar of his dark cape was turned up, but the rest flowed and cascaded around his shoulders with prowess. Lance felt intimidated by his stance.Glancing over to the shorter figure he was a bit taken aback, next to the King of Arus walked the prince.Ketherdin.The prince was very similar to his father. He had the same dark eyes and hair, the same strong jaw —Even in the way they walked they mirrored the other. Ketherdin wore a dark red tunic patterned with gold and a long cape. He looked short for twelve, but he was certainly athletic.Lance had to swallow hard to push his nerves down again. Finally, the Arusians arrived at the thrones. The applause died as they bowed to the Queen of Pallendria."My dearest Queen Charlotte," Theordrin said, his voice was deep, "I thank you with utmost gratitude for having us here in Pallendria for these next few days.""Of course my dearest King, you and your people shall always be welcome in my country." Queen Charlotte replied, she let a smirk ghost her lips. "Or should I say what is to be our country." She glanced warmly at Lancelot and Ketherdin, who seemed to be trying to stab each other with their eyes.Lance couldn't help it! Ketherdin's stare pierced through him. It was unnerving, his gaze was set with authority and entitlement. Like he already knew he was better than Lance. Lancelot raised a brow and returned Ketherdin's hostile stare with a glare of his own. They were so intent on staring each other down Lance almost missed his introduction."... This is Lancelot, of course." Charlotte let her eyes widen, and quickly waved a gentle hand in his direction, motioning for him to greet the King of Arus.Breaking his eyes from Ketherdin, Lance snapped to meet the King, "It is a pleasure to finally meet you Sir." Lance covered his fault of attention smoothly, taking a low bow in the Theordrin's direction."The pleasure is mine, dear Prince, I've heard many things of you of late." King Theordrin said with a smile. Lance wasn't certain if that was a compliment, but he dared a quick grin.Theordrin stepped back a bit to introduce the boy standing next to him. But instead, Ketherdin stepped up to the Queen and bowing, he said, "It is an honor to meet you my Queen, may my father and I grace your kingdom in our stay.""The honor is mine." Charlotte replied. Ketherdin turned to Lance, his dark eyes meeting Lance’s. All hostility abandoned."It is also an honor to finally meet you too, Prince Lancelot. I hope both of our Kingdoms will find peace in the treaty that binds us."
‘Wow, that was good. Did Ketherdin come up with that on the spot?’
A quick flash of movement dared to prove him wrong, Ketherdin's eyes sweeping to the King’s, who nodded in approval. It was rehearsed, of course it was."Thank you Prince Ketherdin, Theodrin.” Charlotte said, nodding as she spoke, “My servants will now escort you to your rooms. I apologize for such a brief greeting but there is still much to prepare for this evening!" She smiled sweetly."Of course, of course! Do not let us keep you any longer," Theordrin agreed, “come Ketherdin." The prince of Arus stood to attention, and walked with his father and the servants deep into the palace halls. Charlotte stood as soon as they disappeared.“Time for a Dance!” ... Lance was quite glad to have freedom to walk around the castle after the meeting. So much so that he practically ran out of the Hall. He sped out a sidedoor and passed the ballroom which was now illuminated with yellow candlelight. He made his way to the garden path where he and his mother had stood only hours before. He needed another minute alone, just to compose himself. It didn't go that bad… did it?
'No… it went horribly! You just stared at Keitherdin like you wanted to kill him! What were you thinking?! All those lessons and drilling for three minutes of disaster!’
Lance kicked a rock, it tumbled into the bushes.
‘Well it's not like it was completely my fault, Ketherdin was crazy. He just kept glaring at me, has no one told him how rude that is?’
He slowed his pace and walked next to a row of rose bushes in decaying bloom. He’d watched all of them bud and bloom, but summer had taken its toll.Lance supposed he‘d been rude as well. Through his fears, Lance had hoped that his betrothed would be everything he dreamed of. Someone to sweep him off his feet at their first greeting, but he realized that that wasn't going to be true. Lance gazed back at the red rose bush, pulling at the spiky leaves as he passed, and was struck with a tremendous idea. Turning and leaning into the bush, Lance reached back for one of the unwilted roses, the thorns piercing the palms of his hands, and picked it.…Maybe the engagement could work after all. … Lancelot ran up the garden path, stashing the rose under his cape, secured beneath belt.He made his way to the enormous ballroom. After sliding inconspicuously through one of the large glass doors, Lance hurried his way to the far end of the room.Four chairs had been set on a raised platform in honor, two trimmed with blue, and two with red. Queen Charlotte was already sat in her own, waiting for the guests to arrive. Her eyes met Lance's as he approached."Ah! Lance I thought you were going to miss the dance, here have a seat." She waved to the chair at her side. Lance obediently walked to his seat. Charlotte asked him as he did,"So, what do you think about the kings of Arus?" Lance sat and thought back to the few minutes they stood before him, it had felt like hours,"I'm not sure, we didn’t really converse with one another —But King Theordrin seems... Very powerful." Charlotte nodded,"That he is."Lance looked away, "But Ketherdrin…” He paused, thinking, “I don't know about him. He seems a little brash, but I won't be able to tell until I’ve really talked to him… I hope we can get along." He ended his uncertain sentence with a smile and looked back to Charlotte."He was probably just nervous,” Charlotte teased, her nose scrunching as she smiled, “Your father was just the same.” Her mirth seemed to radiate through the room, accentuating the bright glow of the candles. “Talk to him, show him who you are is nothing to be afraid of." Her comment made Lance laugh, but the conversation ended there, there was not much else that needed to be said.Besides that, the first of the guests had begun to arrive. And so, the formalities continued. Each party-goer entered the ballroom and greeted the Pallendrian Royals, then drifted off into the ballroom. Charlotte sent Lancelot small glances and smiles between them. But by the time Lancelot had greeted his fourteenth or fifteenth Duchess-of-wherever, he was sick of formal. Excusing himself from the platform Lance quickly looked around for Hammond, the head gardener and Hunk's father. He wasn't sure that he and his wife would be here tonight, but it at least gave him something to do until the dance started. He walked around the edge of the room, eyes glazing over face after unfamiliar face. He listened to the chatter and small talk filtering from the crowd. How could adults understand one another? They all say one thing but mean another, ridiculous in Lance's opinion. Like waste of breath. He was returning to the thrones just as King Theordrin and Ketherdin entered the room. The crowd stilled as Arusians stalked their way across the noisy ballroom.Lance hurried to get back to his seat, missing these formalities, no matter how lame, would cost him dearly. He noticed Ketherdin spotted him through the crowd. He walked even faster, and slid into his chair with only a wary glance and a raised eyebrow from the Queen to signal his entrance.
‘Here we go again.’
The King and Prince bowed for the rulers of Pallendria, then took their chairs as the ballroom quieted.Charlotte stood, "Greetings, friends, accomplices, and honorable guests. I'm here to welcome you to this great celebration and of the joining of Pallendria-Arus. We are here to celebrate the marriage of our sons and future kings, Prince Lancelot Clain of Pallendria, and Prince Ketherdin Kogane of Arus!" She waved to each of the Princes in turn, they both stood as their names were announced.Lance swallowed and tried to look confident in front of the large crowd at his feet."Let us all rejoice together for this great Union! Let us rejoice!" Charlotte chanted, and the crowd cheered.
"Let the dance begin!"
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
"Let the dance begin!"Queen Charlotte's voice rang through the ballroom, filling everyone with excitement. The small orchestra in the corner of the hall started with a flourish, and as the music and the crowd dispersed, Lancelot took a step towards his mother. He bowed, "May I have this dance as promised, My Queen?" He glanced up, a sly smirk taking over his expression."Of course!" The Queen laughed, then clearing her throat, she restated elegantly, "But of course, my dear Prince." She took Lance's hand in hers, and they strode gracefully onto the dance floor.Charlotte's magnificent dress shimmered and sparkled in the candlelight, making the crowd gasp in awe. When they reached the center of the dance floor, Lance guided their hands into the proper positions, one on Charlotte's waist and the other holding her hand up high. As soon as Charlotte let her hand fall on Lance's shoulder he took a lurching step backwards, surprising the queen who laughed as she stumbled to catch up.Through the din of the ballroom, Lance watched other guests were begin to dance in suit. The bright ballroom seemed to radiate the combined joy of the participants, the music and laughter ringing from the highest point in the ceiling. Lance looked to Charlotte, pride sparkling in her eyes. Lance laughed and lunged farther into the steps, Charlotte joined him in his exaggerated dance. Both attempting to keep their faces regal for effect, but failing as their laughter burst from their chests. They danced on and on, —for five songs at least!— until Charlotte had to excuse herself from the dance floor. She stopped them at the end of a particularity quick-paced Waltz."I'm sorry Lance but I can't keep you to myself all night." She said, slightly out of breath.“Same to you! Theodrin looks like he’d like to have a word anyways.” He inclined his head to the thrones where Theordrin watched them. He raised his eyebrows as he and the queen made eye contact.“Well then Lancelot,” Charlotte said, turning back to him, “I’ll see you next at your formal dance with Ketherdin.”‘Oh right’He and Ketherdin were supposed to dance solo as the highlight of the evening. And Lance was absolutely dreading it. But, there was still a lot of time between them and now. He forced himself to forget about it as he and Charlotte walked to the edge of the dance floor. He must’ve made a face because Charlotte layed a hand on his shoulder and reassured him yet again. “You’ll do fine, nothing can go wrong.”She then bid him farewell, and left to find Theodrin. Now that he and the Queen had parted, many of the duchesses and noble-women approached him with light-hearted invitations to dance with the charming young prince. He happily accepted all of them in turn.He danced and danced, with whoever asked and whoever didn't, Lance wasn't even paying attention to who he was dancing with anymore. He swore he took the Duke of Vinus by hand at one point in the night.Soon enough the cooks and servants rolled in the banquet tables, loaded with trays and platters full of all sorts of delicacies, roast venison and red grapes from the surrounding vineyards, cheeses, fresh breads and pastries, even fish brought in from the Sire lakes. The guests flocked to the buffets, and Lance begrudgingly stayed behind. He knew if he joined the guests right away he'd get a week long smacking from his teacher. It was apparently considered rude for the host to eat before the guests. Lance thought it unfair but he did not want to be smacked again. He was starting to get headaches. The Prince glanced over back at the thrones, hoping to catch another glimpse of his mother, but instead his gaze was met by Ketherdin, who seemed to be holding back from joining the other guests at the buffet. Lance thought of the rose tucked away deep in his robes, and made a quick decision. He took off, strutting valiantly across the empty dance floor up to Ketherdin, who then seemed lost in thought. He was staring up at the high mural. Lance stood to the side of him and followed his gaze up above. The mural was stunning, even from such a distance; it displayed images of the sky and the sea, both raging against the other. Large horses from the water kicked and reared at cherubs and the wind, spraying the sea to the clouds. The cherubs shot back at the Horses with fury. Lance had never asked what the mural meant but he had a sinking suspicion that it represented the deep rivalry between Pallendria and Arus.He returned his gaze to Ketherdin, daring to speak. "It's pretty spectacular right?" Lance said with a smirk. Ketherdin jumped, he hadn't noticed that Lancelot had approached him."Uh- yes." Ketherdin caught his voice in an attempt to cover his surprise. "It's quite marvelous and your chandeliers make it seem even more so.""Pfft, c'mon Ketherdin it's okay to not be all gross and formal with me. I'm not quite a king yet!" Lance joked. Ketherdin stiffened in surprise, "Do you want to get some food? You looked like you wanted to grab something." Lance asked."Oh… Yes I suppose, but shouldn't we let the guests eat first?" Ketherdin responded."Well, you're a guest right?" Lance smiled, motioning to take Ketherdin by the arm. Keitherdin cautiously obliged. Lance beamed. The Pallendrian drew the Prince of Arus along with him across the ballroom. When they reached the buffet tables, Lance began taking a few jelly-filled pastries. Ketherdin hung back. Lance noticed Ketherdin's awkwardness, and was amused by his demeanor."Here, grab one of these." Lance said, handing Ketherdin a pastry. Ketherdin shyly took the sweet and followed Lance to a corner of the ballroom, out of the way from the other party-goers. He turned behind a curtain and disappeared. Ketherdin slowly followed.Behind the curtain was a surprisingly wide stone verdana, the curtain the boys walked through was a large draped floor to ceiling window. The castle continued to surprise Ketherdin in the strangest ways. As Ketherdin stepped away from the glass pane, Lancelot carefully closed it -like a door, leaving only the smallest crack so that the conundrum of the ballroom could be heard.Ketherdin stood aside as Lancelot walked to the edge of the verdana and sat, boots just barely brushing the grass. He beckoned for Ketherdin to sit with him.The summer night was warm and welcoming, the grass was a festival of fireflies. After he had settled, Lancelot turned to him and smiled at the pastries."These are my favorite, our cook makes them with the apples from the forest orchard." He took a bite out of his, "They're amazing."Ketherdrin couldn't help but laugh at the prince's enamored expression, but Lancelot was too involved with his pastry to notice. Feeling brave, Ketherdin took a big bite out of his own pastry. It was... Wonderful. The baked apple was sweet and spicy against his tongue. And the dough around it was flaky and buttery."... Wow." Ketherdin sighed. He'd never tasted anything like it before. It was amazing. Ketherdin quickly finished off his own pastry in a few bites, trying to savor it was much as he could. But it was gone far too soon. Lancelot glanced slyly over at Ketherdin who was busy licking his fingers."It’s good right?" He laughed."It was fantastic!" Ketherdin exclaimed quietly. "What is it called? I've never had one of those before." Lance was rather surprised, surely they had turnovers in other countries.“It's called an apple turnover." Lance handed Ketherdin another pastry from his stash."I must ask my fathe- the... King of we can get these in our kitchens as well." Ketherdin said excitedly. Lancelot smiled, tearing into another turnover almost as eagerly as Ketherdin."Are there apple trees in your kingdom?" Lancelot asks between bites, "Because you can't make them without them. Although, I guess you could use a different fruit too, but apples are the best.""I don't think we have any." Ketherdin replied, “I’m pretty sure all of ours are traded in from Balra.”"What kind of great country doesn't have apple trees?" Lance joked."Arus is a great country." Keitherdin snapped. "We don’t need to grow our own."Lance was alarmed at Keitherdin's rise in volume, then cursed himself for not being more diligent about his jests. But he wasn't about to apologize either, he was still wary of the death glare Keitherdin had knocked down on him earlier in the entrance hall. They both continued to munch in silence. Staring at the grass dimly lit by the early moonlight. Crickets hopped from stem to stem on the lawn.Lance's mind was racing to bring up a topic for conversation to change the mood, but before he could speak he heard the music in the ballroom turn to a halt."We have to go back." Lance said, quickly pulling himself to his feet. He held his hand out to Ketherdin who reluctantly allowed himself be hauled to his feet. Lance led him by hand back to the window, and through the curtains. Once they were inside, Lance pinned Queen Charlotte as the speaker. They had barely enough time to hear her announce,"-Lancelot and Ketherdin!" before all eyes were on them. She must have introduced them again, probably expecting them to dance together as previously planned. He knew the both of them were dreading it. Lance blushed as he remembered his palm in Ketherdin's, but now was not the time. He turned to the prince, trying not to laugh from how Ketherdin had turned a new shade of red, and pulled him out into the empty ballroom.Ketherdin stumbled, but Lance held him up steady. As soon as the reached the center Lance put his hands on Ketherdin's shoulder and waist, and the Arusian quickly followed in suit."Can you dance?" Lance whispered."O-of course!" Ketherdin harshly whispered back, he had to look up to meet Lancelot in the eyes. Before Lance could say another thing, the music started up again, and he pulled Ketherdin into a dance. The music that played was quick and joyful, a little faster than Ketherdin could seem to handle. But Lance kept his movements quick and clean trying to save Ketherdin's dignity the best he could. Ketherdin was a blushing mess, stumbling over himself and clinging onto Lance. He didn't like being led, controlled by a stranger. But he held on. He had to be strong.Lance continued leading them in circles across the marble floor. The two princes were the spectacle of the evening, the reason for celebration. They had to be good if not perfect. This night had to go well.Soon enough the music slowed, and so did Lance's pace. Ketherdin was relieved that the dance had finally come to an end.But before Ketherdin could unclasp his hands, he felt himself being swept off his feet. Alarm sprung from Ketherdin as he faced the ceiling. Lancelot leaning over him with a rose in hand. He panicked. In a second Ketherdin freed himself. This was too much. Too much. He spun on his heels, and ran out of the ballroom, Lance’s voice ringing in his ears.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Prince Ketherdin awoke to bright sunlight, gleaming into his newly woken eyes. He shut them immediately and pulled his head back under his sheets with a groan. As he recovered from the unwelcome haze, the gears in his mind whirred in a sea of thoughts.
Firstly, his chambermaid was never to draw the curtains before he woke. He was certainly going to tell her off again. After breakfast of course, Ketherdin was starving, and the scent of fresh lavender only seemed to sharper his appetite.
Lavender...? His room never smelt of lavender....
Ketherdin slowly lifted his head from the bedsheets and glared at his eerily unfamiliar surroundings. Royal blue curtains and rugs decorated the room, which was built in unfamiliar large gray bricks of stone. An elegant fireplace across from his bed had been snuffed out overnight, though the embers still cracked from within. This wasn't his chamber at all! He shot up in alarm as the memories of the previous day flooded his mind. The meeting, the dance ...
He had spoiled everything.
...
"I just don't get him Hunk!" Lance cried, pacing back and forth on the rickety wooden floor of the treehouse. "He's just ridiculous! He barely spoke to anyone last night including me! And then he decides he hates me all of the sudden after the dance, I might have messed up a little, but who could just storm out of a ballroom?" Lance finished, flailing his arms wide for emphasis.
"I don't think he hates you." Hunk said from his spot on the floor. He was messing around with a stick and pieces of twine, a furrow of concentration marking his brow. "I think he's just maybe- maybe scared? Nervous? Pallendria is a whole different place than Arus... ‘Whole different people..."
"Pfft, the Prince of Arus? Scared? I doubt it. Did you know he's already learning combat?!" Lance scoffed, avidly avoiding the subject. "He has a master trainer and everything! A war hero! His name is Shiba-gonay or something."
Hunk snapped up, eyes wide in astonishment.
"Wait do you mean Shirogane the Reborn?! Lance! You don't know about Shirogane?!" Lancelot shook his head,"Wow! Alright, so years ago Shirogane was captured by the Galra emperor himself. They tortured him halfway to insanity! He even has a Magic Galra Arm, from the Garla leaders enchantress!" Hunk explained.
"No way !" Lance exclaimed, throwing himself down next to Hunk, both boys enthralled by the tale.
"Yeah! A lot of people don't trust him because he's part Galra, literally, he's banished from Vinus and Balrac. Probably more places too." Hunk concluded with a sad nod.
"No way! I'm getting the map out." Lance said, quickly crawling over to a crate filled with stolen books from the library.
"Balrac seems like such a nice kingdom." Hunk sighed.
"Really? It rhymes with yak." Lance replied pessimistically.
"What's a yak?" Hunk asked.
"I don't know, but it sounds like the sound makes when a dog throws up."
They both burst out laughing
"Ewww Lance you're going to make me throw up." Hunk giggled from his corner.
"That's my job, of course." Lance smirked. "But hey I found the map!"
"Lay it out!" Hunk said excitedly, scooting over to Lance, who crouched as he rolled out the large piece of parchment.
"Alright." Lance began. "Here's Pallendria," he
pointed to a jagged shape outlined in blue. "And here's Vinus, and Balrac, and Marsan... And Arus..." Lance pronounced the word Arus with a small groan of distaste.
"Speaking of Arus aren't you supposed to spend the day with Ketherdin?" Hunk asked, turning to Lance.
"Psh yeah, if he ever wakes up." Lance sighed frustratedly, he did not want anything to do with that stuck up Prince. "I'll just bring him to the orchard and ditch him, then we can work on our catapults."
"I'm not sure that's a good idea..." Hunk cautioned.
"He'll be fine, Prince of the Kingdom of warfare and stuff yeah?" Lance nudged Hunk’s shoulder. "Now let's get back to Balrac..."
...
Ketherdin had decided that the best way to deal with Lancelot, was to not deal with him at all. He'd fake an illness and he'd be sent back to Arus before he knew it. But he knew it was a foolish idea, and it was only a matter of time before someone would be called in to wake him. Only a matter of days before he'd be back in Arus, training with Shirogane and learning about how to rule his kingdom. Ketherdin let out a sigh of defeat. Maybe a day spent with Lancelot wouldn't be the worst.
A knock at the door started him, he quickly sat up in a formal manner. He cleared his throat,
"Come in."
The large wooden door swung outwards and in stepped a short woman followed by a rolling tray. The maid pulled the tray to the end of his bed then bowed quickly.
"The King requested that your Breakfast should be served in your chamber. And that by the turn of the hour you should be ready to seize the rest of this gorgeous day with Prince Lancelot and those who wish to accompany him." The maid squeaked joyfully.
"Yes thank you, tell my father I will be ready." Ketherdin replied politely. He watched as the turned away and closed the door softly behind her before leaping out of bed to the rolling tray.
The delicious smell of eggs and ham prodded his appetite, and almost as soon as his breakfast was there, it was gone. The palace cooks sure knew how to cook. Feeling content, Keitherdin moved over to the window, curious about how Pallendria would look from this height.
It was beautiful, the rolling hills of forest surrounded the castle, off to one side a river rushed with the spring downpour. Below him, a small clearing showed figures running around, children perhaps. Maybe Lancelot was down there.
Eventually Ketherdin moved away from the window and found his chest of clothes by the fire. He picked out some casual robes and dressed by himself, making sure to hoist his dagger to his belt, tugged on his boots, and waited.
...
Lancelot and Hunk had found themselves babysitting, the other two Garret siblings buzzing to hear from Lance about the night before. Hunk too, although Lance had already told him almost everything.
"Are we really going to meet Ketherdin?!" Hunk's brother Jirosh exclaimed, bouncing up and down.
"Prince Ketherdin." Akiah, Hunk's younger sister scolded. "But we are going to meet him yeah?" She asked Hunk.
"I think so." He replied distractedly. Lance was off in a corner of the courtyard, messing with a puddle. "He's probably a little nervous so don't jump on him or anything."
"I won't." Akiah promised. "But Jirosh might."
"I won't!" Jirosh defended. His small eyebrows scrunched up in indignation.
Hunk laughed, "Alright you two, just be polite. He is one our future kings after all." He said mussing up Jirosh's dark hair.
"Not if I can help it!" Lancelot yelped from his corner.
"Lance we are not going to throw mud at him!" Hunk sighed.
"Okay but what about those apples I left in the-"
"Lance!"
"Joking, joking." ...
Ketherdin jumped up as soon as he heard the knock at his door.
"Come in." He called. The large door swung back, it was the maid once again, her voice as cheerful as ever.
"Your father requests your presence in the main hall. Your Ladyship awaits." She said, bowing.
"Thank you." Ketherdin replied, standing from the bed. He followed her out the door and into the marvelous hallway. Everything about Pallendria seemed to shine, the curtains always drawn letting shining sunlight gleam on the polished floors. Tapestries decorated the walls, displaying scenes of battle, and ships sailing over the Great Seas, and of forests dotted with elk and wolves. Besides him and the maid, the castle seemed empty. They made their way down a grand staircase to the entrance hall.
His father sat with Queen Charlotte in a pair of chairs off to the side of the thrones, chattering like a pair of sparrows.
He and the maid walked up to the pair. They laughed at something Theordrin said before Charlotte turned her gaze to meet them.
"Ah my dear Prince, did you sleep well?" Charlotte tittered kindly.
"Yes my lady." Ketherdin replied, nodding in her direction. He turned to the king. "Good day father."
"Good day, my son." Theordrin smiled. "Are you ready?"
"Yes sir." Ketherdin affirmed, bowing stiffly.
"Fantastic, shall we go?" He asked Charlotte.
"No time like the present." She smiled in return. Theordrin stood and held his hand out for the queen, she kindly took it and rise to her feet.
"Lancelot is out with his friend Hammond, the other children that live in the palace will be about as well." Charlotte said as they walked to a side entrance. "I heard they're all very excited to meet you!"
"Make sure to show them what a real Arussian is like." The King chided playfully. Ketherdin smiled, although he felt a little wary. His father was never in such high spirits. Ketherdin followed the king and queen out the small doorway and into a garden.
...
Lance wasn't really looking when the King, his mother and the Prince turned the corner of the stone wall. He was too busy scowling at the dirt. Brooding about how loathsome this day would be. Hunk had given up trying to cheer him up a while ago. He knew it was a little childish to pout but it might have been his only chance he got for a while to groan about his misfortune.
But maybe he would try to get to know Ketherdin. Maybe show him the pond behind the garden, or the stables. The Queen did say he liked horses. But before he could suggest any of that to Hunk, he heard Akiah gasp,
"Good day my Queen!" She exclaimed. Lancelot whipped around.
"Good day to you as well Akiah." The Queen replied. Beside her stood King Theordrin, and Ketherdin.
Lance scrambled to his feet.
"Well Ketherdin, I think you'll find yourself quite comfortable. If you need anything, just ask Lancelot." Charlotte said.
"Yes, thank you." Ketherdin replied.
Charlotte gave him a quick flash of her beaming smile, and then turned to the king.
"We should be going, I have much to discuss with you my liege."
"Of course, my Queen, we will go now." He said, and as they turned to leave he placed a hand on Ketherdin's shoulder, before disappearing behind the stone wall.
The children stood in silence, not quite sure where to begin. Ketherdin shifted nervously from one foot to the other. Besides Lancelot, who stood awkwardly in one corner, Ketherdin had never met many kids before. They all looked similar, with the same dark hair and skin. The oldest out of the three children was approximately his age. Ketherdin guessed that he was the Hammond Queen Charlotte had mentioned.
Clearing his throat Ketherdin took a step forward, but was interrupted by Lancelot.
"Alright everyone stop drooling," He said walking over to Ketherdin, his voice dripping with sarcasm, "this, indeed, is Prince Ketherdin of Arus."
Ketherdin barely had time to throw him a glare, what was with the attitude?
The girl who looked like Hammond gasped.
"Oh Lance he's so pretty!"
"I'd agree but he'd punch me." Lancelot joked.
"I would not!" Keitherdin gasped dumbfoundedly, blushing at the complement. Now his fiancé was accusing him of assault!
"'Tis a jest my good sir." Lancelot replied, mock bowing. "But may I introduce my good friends here?"
"Uh—"
"These are the Garret children, Hunk, Akiah, and Jirosh." Lance interrupted.
The boy that Ketherdin thought was Hammond approached and gave a quick bow. "It's an honor to meet you Ketherdin." He smiled, "My names Hammond, after my father, but everyone calls me Hunk."
"It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance." Ketherdin replied.
"Alright. Now that everyone is acquainted, let's show him around the grounds, what say you?" Lance inquired.
"Let's go!" Akiah shouted. Keitherdin didn't know if he liked what was happening. He was only meant to spend the afternoon with Lancelot- who was actually beginning to appear respectable- and instead he was being dragged along by two children through the forest. This was supposed to be their first day together, and Ketherdin had hoped that he could have time to apologize for the night prior but with all these other children around, he supposed not. Now Ketherdin was being led by the sleeve out of the courtyard by one of the Garret children, Hunk and Lancelot trailing behind."Pallendria is the best, especially our castle!" The boy named Jirosh exclaimed, "Lance's great-great-great grandfather built it, right Lance?""Yep." Lancelot answered. He popped his 'p' at the end of his word."This is the tree fort that Hunk and Lance built!" Akiah exclaimed running towards a gigantic ash tree at the edge of the clearing, it's branches twisting and curving from the trunk. It was beautiful, but unfamiliar.Arus was a kingdom surrounded by conifers, the woods back home were laid thick with a carpeting of needles, muffling footsteps and sounds. Here there was springy grasses and flowers everywhere. Ketherdin hadn't seen anything like it! Akiah had sprinted off ahead of them to wait below the tree, it's shadow loomed over her small figure. As he and Jirosh approached, Keith began to make out the shape of a wooden platform in between the branches."Lance and Hunk spent an entire month building it," Akiah continued, "it's the most amazing place ever." They had reached the base of the ash tree, and Jirosh motioned to a rope ladder swinging a foot or so above the ground."Do you want to see it?" He said pointing up above with his free hand."Woah woah woah," Lancelot interrupted. Ketherdin had missed his arrival, "let's not forget to ask the makers of the fort permission first.""Lance..." Whined Hunk. Lancelot ignored him, standing his ground."Lance can we go up and show Ketherdin?" Akiah queried obediently."Yes of course." Lancelot replied, a fake tone of flattery drawn across his words. Ketherdin fought to keep his expression neutral as he was led up the ladder by Jirosh and Akiah, the rope was rough and scratched beneath his un-calloused hands. He wondered if they were even bothered by it. As soon as he pushed himself up on the platform, Ketherdin couldn't help but be amazed, though it was the middle of morning the sun was muffled through the density of the leaves, casting only occasional beams of light where it fought through. Because of this, everything under the canopy shone in an ethereal shade of green. It masked everything around them. The platform itself was also impressive, it was put together with care and forethought. Everything was lined up perfectly and corralled by a small wood railing around the edges. There was a basket in one corner that Ketherdin could only assume held slingshots or maybe twine. After a moment of admiring the sight Jirosh said,"Isn't it fantastic?!"“It is." Ketherdin replied. Akiah gasped abruptly,"We should show him the gardens! And the library!""And the pond!" Jirosh yelled back."Let's go Ketherdin!" Akiah exclaimed, running towards the ladder. Jirosh was right behind his sister, too excited to wait. Ketherdin waited until they both had made it to the ground safely before descending. As soon as his feet hit the ground Lancelot said,"They're quite energetic huh?" He was gazing off into the forest where they'd disappeared."Yes," Ketherdin replied, a little exasperated, looking up just in time to see Hunk running to herd his two younger siblings. It made him smile. "I don't have any brothers or sisters, it must be quite a handful,""It is," Lancelot sighed, "sometimes I think want to ship them off to Galra heh, but I don't think I could stand being apart from them," They said nothing more as they followed the Garret children into the forest. ... After seeing the forest, the gardens, the river, and the orchard, the sky was dusking. The Garret children were soon called to home and the princes were left to their own air of awkwardness. Ketherdin didn't know where to go so he just followed wherever Lancelot went, neither of them spoke much. Lancelot had quieted exceptionally since Hunk had left, and Ketherdin thought that maybe the prince did have a shy side after all. The sky had begun to cloud over, threatening rain, and Ketherdin had followed Lancelot down a rose and hydrangea lined path down to a small muddy pond. Lancelot sat on a rock on the water's edge, but made no effort to invite Ketherdin to join him, so he lingered a few feet away. The pond itself wasn't much to look at. A dense thicket covered the sky above their heads, just high enough for them both to stand comfortably. Around the ponds edges circled cattails and small stubby shrubs straining for the small rays of light that filtered through the branches. The grass around them was sparse from the mud, no flowers grew. Ketherdin attempted to admire the dark murky water, but found it unappealing, it didn’t seem very special. He cleared his throat before saying to Lancelot,"I'm… sorry about last night, I shouldn't have run off. It was foolish of me,""Yes, it was." Lancelot replied curtly, "Rude too.""I really am sorry. I didn't mean to embarrass you. I think I embarrassed myself more really." Ketherdin continued, Lancelot wasn't looking at him."Well I guess I expected more of you then." The prince replied, his voice suddenly sharp. Why was he so angry all of a sudden?"I'm trying to apologize." Ketherdin argued, his volume steadily raising, he didn't want to fight."You don't have to shout." Lancelot countered, then sighed, "I'm sorry. I-I'm just having a hard time piecing things together, alright?" He paused as he picked at the stones by his feet, "The thing is... We don't know anything about each other a-and we're already getting married? It's unfair don't you think?""Maybe, but our kingdoms need us—" Ketherdin argued, but Lancelot cut him short,"But I don't love you," Lancelot burst out, his voice was thinning, "I don't... Know if I can have a marriage without love it's... just wrong," Ketherdin took a step forwards."It's not about us Lancelot, it's about our people. There are lots of marriages without love, it's about keeping our kingdoms alive,""Oh yeah? Did your father tell you that?" Lance said, the hint of a sneer ghosting across his face as he tossed a rock into the water. Ketherdin paused before replying."Yes. And I believe him because Arus is one of the greatest kingdoms around," Ketherdin shot back. Lancelot felt his patience snap,"Well he did do a great job on raising a coward running away from the gala like that!""I already apologized! Do you think I want to be part of this?" Ketherdin yelled back."Then you should just leave!" Dead silence followed, Ketherdin felt heat burning at the backs of his eyes. He just wanted to go home— Away from the too-cheerful blues and apple orchards, away from Lancelot and his unrealistic expectations, staring him down with his sky-blue eyes. He couldn't even look at him. He couldn't bear another moment beside him. So Ketherdin took the last of his resolve and turned heel, walking back up the path.He began to run as soon as he was out of the trees the and pushed the tears of frustration out of his eyes. Now he knew Lancelot hated him. ... Lancelot felt absolutely monstrous. He didn't want to fight with Ketherdin, but he did, and what he said probably ruined things forever. He ran after Ketherdin, calling out his name."Ketherdin? I'm sorry! Please come talk to me,""Please Ketherdin, I didn't want to make you upset!" He checked the garden, the orchard, the treehouse. But nothing lent him any wind to where Ketherdin has gone. He wouldn't have told the King would he? No, he was too proud to do that... Lance felt himself panicking, small shocks of fear pulsed his every movement....He really messed up. ... Ketherdin was in the garden wondering how he was going to escape this nightmare. His head low between his knees as the clouds above him began to thunder. He will admit that he cried after storming off, he sat under the hydrangea bush he is under now and cursed Lancelot's name into the wind. The only thing he could do now was to go back, so he did.He didn't know how long he had been hiding, but as soon as he stepped inside the main hall it began to rain. The slow pitter-patters echoing off the castle roof as Ketherdin aimlessly roamed through the halls. The palace was surprisingly empty of staff, quite empty of anyone. So he kept to his thoughts as he stared, ogling at the ceiling. Though he'd much rather be at home, he had to admit that the castle of Pallendria was beautiful. The ornate carvings that swirled above his head were dazzling to watch, with each inch the polished wood pushed movement across the gazers eyes. It was like the whole ceiling was a moving tapestry. As Ketherdin moved on deeper into the palace, everything caught his eye, the embroidery, the pottery, the candelabras. It seemed as if everything was on display. He was admiring a portrait when he turned and crashed into a woman carrying a three foot high stack of sheets."I'm so sorry!" Ketherdin gasped, both he and the maid had fallen to their knees, struggling to refold all of the sheets that now draped themselves all over the hallway."It's quite alright I-I should have been aware of my surroundings sir," the woman stumbled, grabbing a sheet the same time as Ketherdin. She looked up at him and her face flushed, "OH! O-oh my! Prince Ketherdin I am so sorry, please accept my most humble apologies!" She stammered, bowing deeply."Oh no it's alright," Ketherdin consoled, trying to calm her down."No no oh dear I simply cannot believe my mind was elsewhere," she continued, "I am so deeply sorry milord.""It's alright, really!" Ketherdin was starting to blush now, "L-let me help you with these," Ketherdin began to pick up the sheets beside him and fold them, the maid looked like she wanted to refuse, but she only thanked him."...you are truly a graceful gentleman milord." She said, pulling the folded sheets into a pile."It's no trouble at all." Ketherdin replied, "say have you seen the King or Queen recently? I must have a word.""I'm afraid not sir, they still must be conferencing in the queens study," she paused as she reached for another sheet, "but I did happen to spy Prince Lancelot in the library. It seems he spends most of his time there," she said with a hint of amusement. He was surprised, Lancelot didn't seem like the reading type to him."... Was that of any help?" She asked him. Ketherdin hadn't realized he stopped folding."Yes, actually, thank you," He folded the last sheet, and handed it to the kind maid beside him. He smiled, "There, all stacked again." They had stacked the sheets into two piles, one of which the maid was picking up again. Ketherdin gingerly put the second pile on top of the first. The maid looked grateful."Thank you for your help milord. Is there anything else I can do for you?" She asked."Yes, could you point me to the direction of the library?""Kindly sir, turn down this hallway, make a right and it's the double doors on your left.""Thank you miss." Ketherdin said. The maid bowed and continued on her way. When Ketherdin first reached the library, he thought it was empty. The tall bookcases stood ominously around the room, filled with books and scrolls and maps so old, that they were bound with strings of horsehair instead of twine. The room itself was dark, quiet, and air was crisp with the smell of rain mixing with the dry musty smell of the books, someone must have opened a window. He took a step into the room. The library was big, with two levels, several reading areas, and many more tapestries in a forest of paper. He had heard that the Clain family was fond of reading but... This was magnificent. Ketherdin began exploring the small dusty roads that trailed through the bookcases, occasionally stopping to inspect an intriguing book or scroll. He soon stepped out of the shelves into the main reading area, a large cleared space for tables and chairs that faced tall windows. A few of them were open near a small huddled figure sitting at a far table. It was Lancelot. Ketherdin approached slowly. He looked genuinely upset, with watery eyes and a forlorn expression across his face."Lancelot..." Ketherdin called softly. Lance's head snapped up. His eyes met with Ketherdin's."Ketherdin!" He gasped, standing up, "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have yelled at you I-""It's nothing." Ketherdin said, he was getting tired of these apologies."Ketherdin—""It's nothing." He snapped, then saying quietly, "let's just not speak of it.""I—" Lancelot tried again."Stop, I don't care for you apology." Ketherdin pressed, "Let's just, do something else." Lancelot looked at him with a frustrated gaze before sighing and motioning to the table in front of him,"Care for a game of cards then?" ... The Arusians left Pallendria three days later. Things... had not gone smoothly. The boys had another fight, Lancelot had given up on apologizing. Their remaining time together had been layered in hostility, snapping and bickering. It was disappointing for the king and queen, for the princes too, so it was decided they'd try again the following year...
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Prince Lancelot to some, was already a man, fit to be king overnight and rule over Pallendria with grace and confidence. To others he was still a boy. The young and charming Prince of Pallendria. They would trust the kingdom to be in flames as soon as Lancelot would be crowned.Lance was not either of those.Of course he knew the rules and roles of royalty, he boasted about how sure he was of being the best King Pallendria will have ever had -but he was still young, and unsure. That he did not boast about. If it wasn't for Hunk, Hammond's son, he'd probably be neck deep in trouble every minute. But instead of climbing trees or building bows and arrows, he and Hunk were training for war. Today was to be another day of mock-combat.Learning to fight was necessary for a king of course, Lancelot needed to be able to protect himself and others, especially under the threat of a new war. In the last four years, the tension between Arus and Pallendria has melted away. Mostly due to Lancelot and Ketherdin's proposed marriage but also because of the rising terror of the east. Both Pallendria and Arus were small trade and agricultural countries. Their meager size had been an issue for many years, especially when surrounded by the large Kingdoms of Balrac and Vinus, who shared part of the eastern border with the Galra empire. Many people thought that the two small kingdoms would be crushed in a new war, but the small and protestant countries were not going to give up their names so easily. Both Charlotte and Theordrin had spent the last few years preparing to build and army, and their sons were no exceptions. They hired an Arusian soldier named Shirogane to train their heirs. But today, it seemed, Lancelot was not for it.Instead of matching right to their practice ring as he should have, Lancelot took his time pondering as he strode down the castle halls. He didn't look up at the ceiling, he'd already memorized every inch there is to see. He smiled as he pictured the mural above him and kept walking. The halls were empty again, everyone was out doing something except for him. Lancelot slowed his pace as he neared the ballroom entrance. He looked fondly up at the intricate work on the doorframe, recalling all the marvelous dances held in his own palace. He thought that he might just be a little late for training (Sorry Shirogane) and instead decided to take some time for his own leisure. Strolling casually into the ballroom, he found it to be as empty as always. The tall window panes allowing streams of weak light to filter through from the gray sky. Lance had to admit it, he was sick of the gloom, yet the showers of early summer rain never seemed to cease. Out of boredom and unwillingness to train, Lance began to stroll in a wide circle across the edges of the hall. The faintest shadow following his slow movements, like a specter. He'd find himself in the ballroom often, usually to think. There was a lot of things he liked to think about, philosophy was one of his most favorite subjects. Where did they come from? Where would they go? How is the world so perfectly balanced? How far until he reached the world's end? From these thoughts brought forward Lancelot's craving for adventure, the kind of journey full fear and courage that soared through him as he tested his limits... The same feeling he got when he traveled alongside Shirogane and Hunk to Balrac, the feeling of sights and sounds of new places. Oh how he wished he was a knight! But no, he was the prince, and he had to be trained in etiquette, and ethics, and all of that princely nonsense.Lance had considered running away, but choked the thought back. He had a purpose, people and friends to look after, he couldn't just run off into the blue! But did he ever so long to. ... When Lancelot reached the training clearing by the stables, Shirogane was rather annoyed."This is the third time this week Lance. Where is your head?" Shirogane sighed. Shirogane was Lancelot and Hunk's mentor in battle training. Shirogane was an Arusian Knight that had gone missing during a spy mission into Galra territories. The two scientists and other knights along never came back. Shiro was found by a Balra squadron on patrol. His hair stricken white and a gnarled scar slashed across the bridge of his nose. Not only had he been tortured, but it was rumored that his left arm had been replaced with one of black magic.Shirogane of course denied the rumors, as he himself remembered very little, but Lance never gave up easy. When he first arrived in Pallendria at Queen Charlotte's request, Lance badgered him non-stop about the abduction. Hunk had to smack him on the arm to bring him back to his senses. Hunk loved his friend, but no matter how book-smart the kid was, he was still dumb as a rock. He raised his eyebrows now, scoffing,"He was probably off chasing one of the handmaidens." Lance faked a gasp."You are wrong there my friend," He said dramatically, waving his arm about, "because I was in the ballroom testing the deep waters of my own mind.""Philosophy I suppose?" Hunk asked."What else? I think I'm going to be the new Socrates!" Lance chimed."Socrates was put to death by poison." Shirogane stated bluntly."So?" Lance countered, the meaning of Shirogane's words flying past him."Dear lord." Shirogane sighed, "Never mind! Pick up your sword." Lance did so. "Alright, what I was explaining to Hunk before you arrived was that I've already taught you both almost all I can. There are only so many ways to block and parry, and frankly, I've just run out of new techniques to teach you. So-""We're done with swordplay?!" Lance said, hopefully, he couldn't wait until they shifted back to archery."-No. Lance, I've told you to stop interrupting. Our lessons will continue, but it's going to be much less easy on you two."“How?" Hunk asked."Well, for one you're going to start wearing your armor every fight, you'll be fighting one-on-one against me... so, it will be a little harder. But that depends on hard I push you."“I'm willing to give it my best." Hunk chimes proudly. Lance nodded in agreement."Me too, Shirogane." He paused and laughed, "Hey, if I ever beat you, could I start calling you Shiro?" Shirogane mulled it over playfully,“Hmm, we'll see Paladins."The three of them began their training, they succeeded for several hours without interruptions, calamities or catastrophes. Very impressive if Shirogane had to admit. But the weather was poor, and after shouting over and over again through the clanging of swords and armor, Shiro heard impatience begin to creep into his voice."Again!" "Hunk, broaden your strokes!" Shiro called, "You won't reach Lance without exposing yourself."He wiped at the sweat gathering at his brow, and frowned at the sky. They'd been going at it for more than three hours, and the sun had finally broken free. He turned his gaze back to the boys. Lance had turned to face Hunk. He stood readily, feet spread apart, he hoisted up the steel blade, prepared for attack. He met Hunk's eyes from across the clearing, focused and steely, mixed with his casual goofiness. This time his enemy would fall. Shirogane shielded his eyes from the sun, watching the two trainees for mistakes in their posture or stance. He glanced to each set of eyes, and Lance stiffened when the blue ones met his gray. Hunk took the distraction to his advantage and swiftly swiped down at Lances legs. Lance unfortunately had noticed Hunk wheeling towards him and jumped up at the last second, missing the blade by inches. He hit Hunk across the shoulder with the flat of his blade as he landed, disorientating him. Lance scurried away while he had the chance. Hunk steadied himself and once again waited for Lance to engage. As expected, Lance hurled himself back into the fight, sword raised ready to swing down onto Hunks armor. Unfortunately for Lance, Hunk caught a glance at an opening and took opportunity. He swung before Lance had even had the chance to parry and struck him sharply in the ribs. The steel blade scratching sharply against the armor. Lance flew off of his feet and into the dirt. His breath caught in his throat as he hit the ground. Breathless, he reached for his sword again,"Wait, stop, STOP!" Shirogane shouted, the two friends lowered their blades immediately, and Shirogane sighed, "Lance, I just told you, you have to cover your blind spots, Hunk's just going to end up taking you up to heaven's gate. Now try again." Hunk walked over and pulled Lance up. Lance mumbled a quick thanks."Jeez did you really have to hit me like that?" Lance teased, holding his side."Yeah, sorry. You alright?" Hunk asked with a shrug. "Oh yeah, yeah. I'm fine." Lance coughed, "Just lend me a minute and I'll be alright." Hunk shrugged, and stood waiting for his friend to catch his breath. "Lance! Hunk!" A girl shouted from behind them. It was Akiah, Hunk’s sister. Shirogane recognized her appearance as the end of any focus remaining, and patted the boys on their backs."You two did great work today," he had said, "just remember to parry for god's sake. And Lance don't put too much stress on your side, we have a one-on-one tomorrow. I can't afford to break you in two." The boys laughed along nervously to Shiro’s joke, knowing fully well that he could do just that. "You two will not believe what I just heard!" She shouted, waving her arms high above her head.“Can this please wait for another minute?” Hunk begged, “You know how Lance gets when you bring up gossip and we’ve still got to clean up.””Hey!” Lance interjected.”He’s right Lance, you do get quite ruffled at the mention of your... fiancé.” Akiah teased. Lance tried not to let his blush show,”I don’t get ruffled—“”Well see you in the Library Akiah.” Hunk dismissed, and his sister waved a short goodbye before running back from where she came. The two boys made their way quickly to the library, under Lance’s haste. They met Akiah in the Palace library, and sat down at their favorite table, right by the window. Akiah had been uncharacteristically silent as they settled, but they could tell that she was just bursting to speak. It was creating a tension that Lance detested. He was hoping for news on Prince Ketherdin, and he didn’t like the excitement that was radiating off of his friend. Lance may have hated the Arusian Prince with every fiber of his being, but he was not going to give up a chance on information on him. Lance hadn't met the neighboring Prince in over a year, but his passionate distaste for his spouse-to-be had not subsided. Though the stories Lance had heard about Ketherdin were worthy of redemption, Lance refused to move on. Hunk and Akiah had gotten rather tired of it, not to mention half the kingdom as well. Whenever there was a whiff of news or gossip from Arus, Lancelot was there. Only to claim his undying loathing for Ketherdin, of course. Most of it people ruled off as jealousy, but others thought that maybe Lancelot did care for Ketherdin after all. Luckily Lance wasn't as bothersome as he had been the years before, especially after Akiah herself had scoffed at him."If you want to know how Ketherdin is doing so badly why don't you just go and ride off to Arus already?!" She had said.No. He wasn't going to do that. Every time his mother mentioned it he came up with the most ridiculous excuses. But truly, he didn't know what would happen if they met again. He stiffened now as Akiah took a breath."Yes Lance, it involves Ketherdin..." Aikah said, with a hint of satisfaction, "Because there's going to be a tournament this year! In Arus! And guess who the wonderful king invited? Everyone! All men from ages of fifteen are welcome, there's a prize of course but the best part is that you two are going to be honored guests!""NO!" Lance shouted, slamming his palms on the table. Hunk grinned."YES!" Akiah shouted back, slamming on the table herself, "Both the king and Charlotte are still trying to get you two together! Charlotte's going to tell you all about it during dinner tonight, so don't say I said anything but...""There's going to be a tournament!" Lance exclaimed, bouncing up and down, then seriously, he stated, "Finally I can show Ketherdin who's the best!" Both Hunk and Aikah rolled their eyes."Sure Lance, suuure." Hunk sighed. He had heard enough of this feud over the last four years, and honestly, he couldn't wait for Lancelot to get over himself. Keith had tried to be forgiving the last time they had seen him, but Lance wasn't having it. If Lance wasn't going to get his act together, Hunk was afraid he'd have to smack the poor boy."I'm going to go out and prepare!" Lance exclaimed. He was buzzing with purpose. He took a wild leap, and marched out of the library."Lance, the tournament's not until next month!" Aikah called after him."Then I have time to get even better!" Lance shouted back, and ran out of the library doors. The two siblings shared a glance and laughed. ... Later that evening, when the Queen, Prince, and staff had taken their seats at the banquet table (Informal yes, but Charlotte was against the traditions of classes. She thought it to be archaic and useless) she delivered the evening news. All was well in Pallendria, the early summer harvests and farming were going well, their trade status with Balrac and Arus were perfect, Vinus and Carth were fearful of the uprising Galra forces of course, but otherwise the economy had been doing well. After a bit of casual conversation and dining, she dropped the news they had all been dying to hear."So, I assume most of you have heard the tournament that Arus is holding to celebrate its one hundred and thirtieth year. A wonderful feat, of course." She paused, "But also, that our own royal Paladins are invited," Charlotte clapped her hands together and gazed at Lancelot proudly, "Lancelot and Hunk have been invited to join the tournament!" The staff gasped and clapped, talking altogether at once. Charlotte let the buzz continue until she spoke again, "The tournament will be held this August, the third. I'm allowing a small party to come with us to Arus, but we must have some to stay behind and care for the castle. We'll only be gone a week, but we still must be ready for anything." Everyone nodded, a few sighing sadly. But the electric buzz of excitement stayed clear. Charlotte let them speak, and waited a moment as questions were asked and answered before changing the topic."Now, would anyone else like to share and news they have?" ... Lance lay awake that night. Thinking of Ketherdin. Usually he avoids this topic because the guilt layered on and on. Like a thick wool blanket. The last time he had seen Ketherdin he was fifteen, a little less aware of his voice, his actions. And he had been cruel to Ketherdin. He remembered as the Arusian came up to him after dinner. Alone in the dark halls. He had asked Lancelot to forgive him and his actions. But Ketherdin has already annoyed him past the point of reason that day, and looking back, Lance realized they were a poor justification. He didn't yell at Ketherdin, or curse, or shout. He just turned up his nose, asked him if his father had put him up to it. Asked him if he even cared at all. Ketherdin just stood there afterwards, palms shaking but saying nothing. Eventually Lance just left, and nothing was solved. Deep down, Lancelot really wanted to like Ketherdin. But he was just so... so unbearable. He wouldn't talk out issues or slow down. He was always fighting out of things. Lance saw it as arrogance, and left it at that. Maybe Lance could finally bring Ketherdin down from his high horse. Maybe he could finally show him who is best.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Ketherdin was shaken from his thoughts when a loud rapping sounded on his door. He was hiding out in his chamber, a quiet cozy room in the east tower. Sunlight streamed through the open windows as the knocking sounded again."Come in." He called. The door swung open and his tutor and advisor, Caroh, stepped into the chamber. The walls of his room were dressed in dark red tapestries and curtains. The floors a warm gray stone. It was large for a tower room. Ketherdin's bed was pushed up against the left wall, his wardrobe and sword rack to the left and right of it. The room would be open and spacious if it was not so stacked with strange odds and ends. Books and papers were strewn in piles around the room, there were beautiful shelves carved from Redwood full to the brim with interesting objects Ketherdin had found out in the forest, grass necklaces, odd branches, large pine cones and so forth. Below these shelves was a card table, and beside this sat a tall cage that kept his pet Robin, Talon, who sung quietly in the corner by another tall window. What drew the eye the most was Ketherdin's large wooden desk at the farthest wall, which was covered in papers. There were some that lay in piles which started out as orderly, fallen into disorder and spread across the surface of the dead. Ketherdin said his mind worked too fast when he was writing, and he had given up on cleaning it up day after day. Many of these papers lay in a circle around the chair Ketherdin was now sitting in. It was a mess, but there was a system to it. Caroh now gazed at the papers around his feet in disgust. He was constantly badgering Ketherdin about how keeping a clean workspace was necessary. But the Prince didn't seem care. Caroh flicked his judging eyes up to Ketherdin's gaze, his tone steady in contrast,"Good morning my lord. It is ten o'clock in the morning as of now. What are your plans for today?" He asked. Ketherdin pulled his arms back behind his head and stretched,"Ten already? Wow." He brought his arms back to his sides, "Today I was planning on going for a ride on Red, for a few hours at least. Oh and more combat training if Shiro's back yet." He said hopefully."Unfortunately, Shirogane is still in Pallendria, he will be for a few more weeks as I've said before sir," Caroh reminded him."Fine." Ketherdin whined, playing with a corner of one of the papers, "I'll start practice later this morning. What's my work today?" He asked."I have it here," Caroh explained, pulling a stack of papers out from underneath his arm, "These are reports and complaints from our smaller villages, you are to organize them by importance and attempt to find solutions for them. Is that clear?""Yes sir." Ketherdin responded. He took the papers from Caroh rather reluctantly, and turned to his advisor once more, knowing that he wasn't free quite yet, "Is that all?""Yes sir, but your father asks for you to be here, on time for dinner tonight, he wishes to speak to you about something or other of importance." He joked, then stood, "Have a good afternoon, my Prince." Caroh bowed."You too." Ketherdin responded. He tossed the paper stack onto the desk immediately after the door closed. Sorry peasants. Today was for riding. And it wasn't that much work, he could do it later that night. He ran to his wardrobe and pulled out his riding gear. He threw a thin white shirt, thick cotton trousers, and his overcoat out on his bed, he tore off his sleepwear in anticipation. He hadn't ridden Red in ages, and he could not wait to take her out again. He barely laced his boots before he was running down the stairs and into the main hall. The main hall of Castle Arus was magnificent. The checkered tile floors were laid with gold leaf and sparkled impeccably in the sunlight streaming through the large windows. The hall was bustling with activity as usual. Desks and tables were filed in rows up and down it’s length. Theordrin liked to conduct most of his business there. Ketherdin spotted him now as he crossed the hall.He was in deep conversation with his advisers, whom Ketherdin disliked. They're were all too conceited. Theodrin looked troubled, but then again, the king always looked troubled these days. He did make eye contact with his father as he passed and offered a wave. The king only nodded, and bowed his head to his work again.Ketherdin reached the other side of the hall and pushed open the side door that led to the small gardens on the south side of the castle. He walked the path and cut through some hydrangea bushes to reach the trail to the stables faster. Both the Armory and Stables were a minutes walk from the palace as Ketherdin's great great-grandfather, who had built the castle, was more interested in humanism than war. It was a little annoying sometimes, as for when it was dark or raining. But Ketherdin had memorized the trek well.He reached the stables after walking down a wide dirt road under the fir trees. The pine sap filled the warm summer air with sharp tones. It was refreshing.Red was standing in her stall, the stable hand nearby. Red was a chestnut mare with a startlingly white blaze marking across her face. She was feisty and rude, but Ketherdin loved her to bits.He now watched as Red bent down, bit the hem of the stable hand's shirt, and pulled up. The stable hand jumped up with a small cry and Ketherdin allowed himself a smile before he got close."You alright there?" He called to the stable hand. The man looked at Ketherdin with annoyance."Your Red here is impossible! I'm jus' glad you're here to take her out before she takes ma' hand off." He grumbled. Ketherdin patted him on the shoulder as he stalked off. Yes indeed, Red was a handful. He approached her stall."Hey there girl." He said calmly, Red turned to him, ears attentive, "You miss me?" Red snorted and pushed her face against his, she was itching to be out."Alright calm down, calm..." Ketherdin consoled, patting her shoulder, when she quieted he went off quickly to find her saddle and reigns. Ketherdin enjoyed riding bareback, but if they were going to be going as long as he had planned they would need extra support. He returned to her stall and walked in. After placing on her bridle carefully, and strapping the saddle on tight, he walked her out of the stall. She was anxious to run, Ketherdin could tell the second she stepped out. So quickly he brought her to the edge of a grassy hill and told her to wait as he mounted her. Fortunately years of riding had built trust between the two, so she stayed still, but tense, as Keith climbed on. If it had been anyone else, she would have taken off.Keith looped the reins around his gloved hands, and prepared for flight. He leaned forward and kicked Red twice."Hyah!" He cried, and Red took off with incredible speed.Red was fast. Very fast. The trees and hills around him blurred at the edges of his vision. They raced over hills and looped around trees, always getting faster. The wind in his face felt so incredible. Freeing.Releasing.Like an adventure of their own.He tasted the sweet pine air as Red pressed on. ... The prince of Arus entered the private dining hall at precisely six forty-one in the afternoon. Meaning he was forty-one minutes late for dinner.Theordrin watched with eyebrows raised as his son sat down on the opposite end of the short table, face and clothes streaked with dirt, and with a few pine needles tangled into his dark hair. Even more so when Ketherdin began to tear into his meal, only offering him half a glance. He sighed."Keith-" he began, Ketherdin snapped up at the use of his nickname, mouth still full. He swallowed as Theordrin continued, "What have we discussed about eating at the table? I've told you a thousand times.""...be on time, make small talk..." Ketherdin sighed guiltily through his mouthful."And?""And not to forget your manners." Ketherdin finished."Perfect. Thank you." Theordrin said sarcastically. He took a sip of wine, "So you went riding today I assume, how was it?""It was wonderful." Keith said, taking smaller bites of his food, "Red was exited today. We were out for a long time.""As usual." Theordrin added."As usual." Ketherdin laughed, "But we saw a pack of coyotes today, we stayed clear of course, but there were eight all grouped together. I thought it was strange.""Hmm. Maybe there was carrion." Theordrin suggested."Maybe, we weren't close enough to see. I'd bet it was though."The conversation bounced around, politics this and economy that, until Theordrin spoke again,"The tournament is coming up soon. Are you ready?" He asked."Yes! I've been practicing everything frequently. I'll prove myself." Ketherdin assured confidently, he had been preparing himself for a whole year."I'm proud to hear." Therordrin boasted, then his tone changed, "Now Ketherdin, we've talked about the Pallendria-Arus pact before now of course, but Charlotte and I have been thinking that we'd ... like to give you two another try." Ketherdin froze, Theordrin continued, "You're going to be seventeen soon, and that leaves little time for you two to ah... connect." The king paused, searching Ketherdin's face for a reaction, what did this have to do with the tournament?"So, I've invited the queen and prince to join us for the tournament, and I hear Lancelot intends to enter."There was a pause."Well. It's too bad that Lancelot insists on being such a pompous child all the time, or else I'd get no joy in beating him." Ketherdin said snarkily."Now Ketherdin-""Father, we know well enough that Lancelot and I cannot get along! You might as well find another way to make Pallendria-Arus a reality because I'm sure he hates me.""Son I understand. But I’m certain he doesn’t hate you. And you have to remember you had not been as friendly to him as I'd hoped either." Ketherdin tried to argue but Theordrin silenced him the wave of his hand, "You were polite yes, but you weren't tolerant. Everyone knows the Pallendrians are eccentric, they're not like you and I Ketherdin. They're different people. You can't expect a man from a different culture to change for you.""That's not my issue, I don't care what family he's from he's loud and dismissive and unkind to me. And for no reason it seems!""Then why don't you talk to him about it? Write a letter for god's sake." Theordrin barked. Kertherdin threw his head in his hands, defeated,"You obviously don't understand. He won't talk to me!" Ketherdin cried sullenly."Then do as I suggested. Talk to him." Theordrin said sternly. Ketherdin stood up, paced for a second, then began to walk out of the dining hall. Theordrin knew better than to go after him. He called to him as he walked through the doors."I can't fix this for you, son." ... Ketherdin marched up the tower stairs, making sure every step sounded loudly in his ears. The anger pulsed inside his head until he reached his chamber door, then after slamming it, he only felt disappointment.Surely the king didn't think he was the only one upset with this outcome. He wanted to like Lancelot, but they hadn't been able to cooperate on anything. Even simple card games had ended in fury, spitting at each other like animals. Though that had been a year past, Ketherdin doubted Lancelot had changed much, he'd always been the same since the night he met him...Ketherdin threw himself down on the bed and his disappointment turned to guilt.Perhaps the Dance of pallendria had been the only real time Ketherdin had enjoyed Lancelot's company. He remembered it vividly, though it's bitter end still haunted him. But maybe it was because of that night's end things turned out so poorly. What would have happened if he hadn't run out of the ballroom in embarrassment? Maybe Lancelot wouldn't have resented him... Maybe it was his fault everything went wrong.But... No. It wasn't...It had been Lancelot who said they could never be together, down by that muddy pond. It had been Lancelot who ignored his gestures of friendship. This was not his fault. All Ketherdin had done was try to fix it. But no!Knowing that made the anger rise in his throat. Knowing that made Ketherdin push himself off his mattress. Knowing that had him scrambling for a fresh piece of parchment. His father wanted him to write a letter? Well fine.He was going to write one hell of a letter.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
The two days ride to the Arusian capital had Lancelot practically dying of boredom. He and Hunk, under the watch of Shirogane, had exceeded all expectations in their final month of training together. Shirogane had said though they were young, they had true heart and intellect. That made Lance's chest fill with pride. He couldn't wait to get to the tournament, to show everyone what he was made of one and for all! ...The other passengers of the carriage they rode in were becoming rather annoyed with this."Sit down for gods sake, you're shaking the whole carriage." Spat Aikah, who had begged and begged the Queen to come along. Charlotte eventually caved, and now she, Charlotte, Hunk, Lance, and Shirogane we're traveling across the countryside to where Arus waited.Lance sat down at Aikah's demand, rather irritated himself, and began drumming his fingers on the padded seat. Charlotte, who was sitting next to Lancelot, sighed and said,"Honestly Lancelot if you can't sit down in a carriage for a day how on earth will you be able to stand sea travel?""Sea travel is different," Lancelot argued, "You can stand and walk around, or stare at the waves. All I'm seeing is trees and dirt.""Lance." Charlotte warned exasperatedly, they'd had this conversation at least three times after they had left, only adding to the anxious tension of the carriage. And when Lance did not respond immediately, the passengers felt peace in hope for silence. When he was not raving and ranting about the tournament, he had been playing with the embroidered seat cushions. The now familiar -snap- of the fabric was one of the most aggravating sounds imaginable. They all shot him a glare when he began to do it again, and Lancelot cried apologetically,"Alright! I'm sorry. I'm anxious is all!" Aikah sent him an annoyed, yet understanding glance. Hunk spoke up from his quiet place in the corner."I told you. 'Should have brought a book." Shaking his own novel at Lancelot. Lance scoffed quietly and stared out the window.Ugh, road travel. At the least they could be riding horses instead. But 'no Lance the carriage is tradition' and, 'How are we supposed to carry all our things Lance?'.What he would give to be out in the open forest right then. Beneath the sun. His steed, Blue, was almost old enough to ride. She was even more beautiful than the foal she had been he first laid his eyes on her. He had taken her out many times into the forest near the castle so she could learn it's scents and sounds. He looked forward to training her, riding her, becoming the best of friends. Lance loved her steadiness and surefooted advances into the unknown, she loved water and cats too... He was already missing the stables at home. Blue would wait for him.Outside the carriage a large gush of wind rattled the leaves together, creating the loud chorus of layered voices that sent Lancelot into a daydream: He lay in the center of the forest. Blue, now fully grown, was grazing close by. The sun reaching through the leaves was warm on his face, dappling in the grass in light. He wore no shoes and the softness of the earth could always be felt. He imagined taking a deep breath and knowing it was spring, the air thick with the fresh scent of growing things. New flowers, saplings, grasses, bushes, flourishing everywhere. It was wonderful, his own quiet place, and he could stay there forever if he wanted. But the carriage hit a dip in the road and Lancelot bumped his head against the roof. After Aikah had finished laughing at him Charlotte pointed out the change in foliage, the Oaks, Ash, and Elms we're slowly turning into Pines. Shiro and Hunk pointed out the different Spruces and Cedars as they passed. The wind blew the sharp scent of sap into their faces and Lancelot knew they had arrived. Finally, after the horrendous two days travel, The Kingdom of Arus was just ahead.Arus was much much different than what Lancelot had expected. For some odd reason he imagined it to be a cold and gloomy place with craggy rocks and tall peaks. Like the Iron mountain back home. But Arus was beautiful. The sharp trees led from the valleys created by the northern mountains, letting the foliage spread on and on thickly, but the landscape grew sparse and grassy as the valleys turned to meadows. The road itself followed these valleys, creating an easy passage for the travelers. Rock outcroppings surfaced here and there but what really caught Lancelot's eye the flowers. He gazed across a field of white daisies and drew in the scent. He gazed at this view intently, making sure it would stay in his memory forever.Far off he saw a horse and rider on the edge valley. It only passed through his field of vision for a moment, but he recognized the horse as a beautiful and powerful chestnut. The person riding it was irrecognizable by distance, but rode proudly on. He was reminded of Blue once again, and began to point the rider out to his mother, but the pair had already ducked into the trees at the edge of the valley.Besides the landscape, the second thing that had surprised Lancelot the most was the lack of people. As far as he knew this was the main road, and the road that led to the capital the quickest, but they had been through only a few towns and villages. He asked Shirogane about it. He and Charlotte explained that Arus mostly relied on its western trade where it touched Balra and shared its south western border with Pallendria, and that the biggest cities such as Surda and Tairm were located there. They had past north of these cites on their travels, which put-off Lance a little. He would have loved to see an Arusian city. He had heard people talk about it's great high white-brick walls and beautiful mosaics... He had been quite exited to see it... but after all, that's not where the tournament was held.He asked if they could ride through on the way back to Pallendria, and got a wavering 'maybe' that would probably turn into a 'no.' He sighed dramatically to pronounce his displeasure, but got nothing in return. The royal city of Arus (appropriately named Arus, but called by most as the Royal city), was indeed grand, but it wasn't Surda. From what Lance had heard it was very quaint and polite, peaceful and boring. It sounded just like home to him, just like Castle Pallendria. But, with the tournament on, there would have to be some fun! West of the city, located just outside the walls, was a large clearing in the wild pines made by lumberers when the city was first built. It had always been the place for large events such as this, but he was told it was local enough that people had their weddings and group picnics there.Soon it would be home to the best sword to sword combat in the country, knight against knight, shields clanging shields. For the first time in a while Lance felt himself get nervous. Shirogane caught Lancelot's eye as he frowned again at the thought, and used it as a cue to strike up conversation."Say Lance, when we set up camp could you do the rounds and find out our competition? I'll know a few men there, but not as many as I'd like." "What do you mean? You want me to strike up conversation with everyone? As in, ask our opponents their strengths and faults?""That's what you're good at! Hunk and I can set up the tent when you're gone.” He paused looking at Hunk, "Does that sound alright?" Hunk didn't look up from his book. He made a small grunt of approval,"Yep. Sure. Whatever." Content with the resolution Shiro smiled a bit and returned to looking awkwardly at the carpeted carriage floor. Silence fell again."Well, at least we're almost there." Charlotte said, breaking the brief quiet, "You see that big stump there? That tree fell on the middle of the road during a storm. It blocked our way once riding here, I insisted we climb over it, as I was late already, and I trudged my way to the city in the mud, ha!" Charlotte laughed."You did?!" Aikah inquired, Hunk looked up from his book with a look of wonder."Ma'am, you never fail to surprise me." He said."Thank you Hammond," Charlotte replied, "King Theodrin was quite, err, surprised when I turned up on his door step like that.""Did he loose it?" Aikah asked."Well... yes." Charlotte said with another laugh, everyone laughed with her, after things had settled Charlotte ended her story by saying, "We are very close now. I do remember this road well." Everyone laughed."I'm relieved, I can't stand another minute in this stupid carriage." Moaned Lance."That's one thing we can all agree on." Hunk remarked with a snort. Everyone doubled over with laughter. ...The sun had begun to set as the road ahead shifted from dusty and unpaved, to lined with cobble and a grove of cedar trees. They traveled down the stone cobble until they reached a clearing, and the walls of the Royal city lay just ahead. The city streets were wide and paved, the streets lined with people, shops, homes. They passed awestruck citizens gazing at the carriage in marvel. Lance waved out, and a small girl waved back. They passed a market, wide two story buildings, a blacksmith, a woodworkers shop... there was so much! The city was huge! Lance whirled around to meet Shirogane and his mother,"You mean this place is a small city?!""It's quite big compared to a few of our small towns isn't it?" Charlotte remarked,"Bigger than Castle-Pallendria I must say...""Bigger than Castle-Pallendria! We don't even have a Royal city!" Aikah exclaimed as she gazed out the window, nose pushed against the glass,"N-not to be pert, my queen.""I'm so impressed. Wow, look at that craftsman ship." Hunk said pointing to blacksmith hammering on a scythe, "Hey, Shirogane, Queen Charlotte, do you uh, think there may be a slight possibility for us to go out looking around town? ...Just for a stroll." "We will see," Shirogane answered, "we're going to be spending a lot of time training here but, maybe after the tournament if you're up for it." Hunk flashed a mischievous look to Lance, who reciprocated. Aikah turned to Charlotte."What about you and I?" She asked, "Were only here as spectators.""Well, I have a little bit of business to discuss with Theodrin, but it shouldn't take up much time." Charlotte said, playfulness dancing in her eyes. Aikah looked ecstatic."Oh I can't wait!" She squealed. They turned off the main road, and followed a slightly smaller passage to the east. They had cut through the Royal city to save time, and were now back on the cobble road to the clearing where the tournament was being held. The tournament grounds were very large. There were 'stations' set up for every sport, lances, archery (Both Lance and Hunk's favorite), swordplay, fencing, discus, and to Lance's surprise, a jousting arena. He had never seen a joust before. The carriage stopped as the cobble turned to gravel. Lancelot opened the door and jumped right out."Ah! Sweet freedom at last!" He shouted. The rest of them followed but in a more quiet manner, stretching out their aching backs and legs. Shirogane walked to the back of the carriage where their luggage was tied down, he pulled three chests from the back of the carriage, it bounced in relief from their weight."Hunk, Lance," Shirogane directed, "Help me with these." The two lads did as they were told. They stepped back and waited for instructions."Take care ladies," Shiro called to Charlotte and Akiah, who had moved back to the carriage."You three as well." Charlotte said. She bowed gracefully in farewell."Wait where are they going?" Lance asked."We're to stay in the palace. We're not competing." Akiah replied teasingly, "Just dropping you off for safe keeping.""What?!""Really Lance, you'd like to stay in the same place as him." Hunk joked. "Well if it means I don't have to sleep in a tent then I'm for it!" Then in a slightly lower tone, "And don't call him him like that.""Too bad tents are mandatory for us." Hunk replied, ignoring Lance's secondary comment. "You're joking." Lance said, his expression low."None here." Hunk shrugged."Ughh.”"Let's get a move on boys, we have a lot to do." Shirogane called. He had already begun making his way down the grassy hill. Hunk followed without question. Lance turned back to the carriage only to see Aikah sticking out her tongue. Oh was he ever going-"Come on Lance!"He sighed another exasperated sigh. And looked out over the beautiful scenery. Golden light from the late afternoon sun shone all around. He would be here for a week at the most. Only a week. That was fine yes? After all, what could possibly happen in a mere week.Though the tournament grounds were large, they weren't nearly large enough for all of the travelers to camp on. Many of the competitors chose small clearings between trees, or camped on the edge of the woods. Lancelot, Hunk, and Shirogane looked around for an empty space, but found none. They asked around, and had been instructed by guards and fellow competitors to make camp somewhere in the woods. They trekked across the grounds again. They were often sneered at, judging eyes all glued to the rich foreigners passing through. For the second time since arriving at Arus, Lancelot felt self conscious. He thought to trade his embroidered vest for a plain shirt as soon as Shirogane instructed them to set down their trunks.Few recognized Lancelot in comparison to Shirogane though. Almost everyone heeded him. He was a legend out here, the Arusian hero who escaped a Galra prison. And though Lance and Hunk were quite sure Shirogane's arm was anything but magical, the people asked to see him raise it high. Lance took one of the trunks from Shirogane's hold so he could do so. After escaping the gaze of the other citizens, Hunk pointed out the direction in which they were instructed to go.They reached the edge of the clearing, then passing through a line of bushes, making twigs snap and taller branches tremble. On the other side was the forest of pines. The air snapping with the smell of their mid-summer sap. Eventually Shirogane found a nice spot beneath a large pine where the earth was spongy with mosses and needles. Because of the needles, there was little to no undergrowth in the forest. It felt odd to Hunk and Lance, who had grown up knowing thick bushes and tall grass. They could clearly hear and even see other travelers settling down for the evening."It's really open here..." Lance said, unnerved."It's open everywhere here." Shiro replied. He heaved a trunk with a grunt behind him, "There, that should do it. Give me a minute to organize the tent, in the meantime, can you two go look for firewood?""Sure," Lance replied, Hunk nodded with him, "but don't be surprised if we come back without anything. This place is emp-ty." Shiro laughed at his tone,"You just have to look. Take your time, explore if you want. Just be back here in a half hour.""Yessir!" Hunk said, and turned to find Lance already a few canters away, "Hey Lance! Wait up!" "This one would work yeah?" Hunk said, pulling a small log from beneath the needles."Yup, might want to let it sit out for a night though, it's a little wet." Lancelot responded. They had been wandering the wood for a good while, they both had their arms stacked with firewood. There was a pause as they moved forward, searching in the twilight. It was getting dark fast, and they both had agreed to returning to camp soon. The pause lengthened as they shuffled in the fallen needles."Do you ever think about love sometimes?" Lance asked Hunk. When wandering Lance usually became quieter and pensive, they had bounced around in conversation, but Hunk was surprised he brought up such a sensitive topic."Uh, sometimes," He replied warily, "it seems nice. Especially how old poets describe it. Yeesh, heh." He joked. Lance looked away and kicked a large pile of needles. He watched as they fanned out through the air, and fell without a sound. Hunk could tell he was frustrated, but also... sad. The way he didn't respond definitely told him so."...Do you want to talk about it?" Hunk ventured. He leaned down to pick up another stick, this one curved at a sharp angle. He brandished it like a scythe."Talk about what exactly?" Lancelot said, his eyes moving to the scythe, "That's pretty neat." He commented."Yes isn't it?" Hunk said with a smile, "But y'know, talk about the marriage pact and stuff. If that's what you're thinking about.""I'm always thinking about it." Lance replied bitterly. "What else is there for me to worry over?""Well, y'know, leading Pallendria someday is always something. The Galra too, yeah, they're scary. What about a plague sweeping over the land?" Hunk said, beginning to worry himself, "There's always stuff to worry about.""That definitely helped me, thanks." Lance sighed. He paused for a moment before apologizing. "Sorry Hunk, this idea just terrifies me. I don't expect you to understand but..."“Yeah... yeah, it's completely alright Lance. I'm sorry too." Hunk said, stepping in closer. "Sorry for what?" Lance said, his usual cheer poking through."I'm sorry... for this." Hunk said gravely, his arm with the scythe stick whirling around until it jabbed Lancelot in the ribs. Lance tottered back, dropping a few sticks."Hey! Oh you prick!" He shouted back, but the anger was gone, replaced only with Lance's mischievous expression. He could deal with whatever his emotions spat at him later, now he just had to defeat his true enemy."I'll show you!" Lance picked up one of his own sticks, straight with bark peeling. He whipped it at Hunk, creating a high pitched 'whoosh' sound as it flew through the air. "En garde!" Hunk called to his friend, and steadied himself into position. They lunged back and forth crying out insults as they did. They sparred until they reached back to the firelight of camp, where Shirogane awaited with a disapproving glance, and supper."Looks like you boys dropped half the firewood on you way back." He said with an eyebrow raised. Youch."Sorry Shirogane." Supper for the three was stew made with dried chicken and Vinus rice. Shiro had also picked small weeds and edible grasses for flavor. It was... surprisingly... decent. The boys had been on multiple trips with Shirogane where they had camped out, and usually Shirogane burnt whatever he tried to make. Lancelot and Hunk had learned how to roast a rabbit very quickly. But this stew was an accomplishment for the cuisine-challenged-veteran. Both the boys complimented Shirogane on the ratio, and Shirogane admitted he had been practicing. They stayed out late, until the fire turned to embers, talking and sharing stories that they had all heard many times. As the night grew still, Lance asked about the competition, and the opposition they would face."Seems pretty rough doesn't it?" Shirogane asked with a chuckle, "Don't worry, many of the men and women here only look skilled. Honestly I think the only trouble you two would have would be with Bertock, Farina, and Ketherdin. Those three are the real competition. But neither of you will fight Bertock, he's a discus and wrestling man. Farina is a sharp archer and staff-wielder, but she is lacking in her offensive swordplay. I've watched, and even competed with these two for years, but nothing to the scale of this year's tournament. Everything is on the line for them... especially with Ketherdin competing this year." Both Lance's and Hunk's faces fell, they were both challenging Ketherdin in swordplay and archery. Shirogane saw their expressions and tried to raise the mood again. "Hey, not all is lost! But I can't tell you how to beat Ketherdin because I cannot predict him. He may also be the only one who can beat me besides you two. But I'll tell you this, don't underestimate him, and don't let your feelings," He turned to Lance with a look, "get the best of you. He will take any opportunity. He is fast, smart, and strong... Be ready for anything." Those were the words ringing in Lance's head as he lay down for the night."Be ready for anything." The final competitors had already arrived, and the dark northern sky glittered with stars. It was late, but Ketherdin still sat awake. Leaning against the open windowsill. He needed air tonight, he needed to breathe.‘Deep breath in, exhale. Let yourself become one with the wind and sky. Breathe deeply, fully, when you need to think. Brush away your unnecessary anxieties. With each breath drawn, comes patience. Patience yields focus.‘He had an argument with his father again. This time over something as simple as Ketherdin's riding times. It was their third squabble this week, and Keith's temper only became more brittle. Theodrin detected his heightened irritability arrived when Queen Charlotte and her niece (Or maybe her cousin? He hadn't payed attention to her introduction) walked through the castle gates, as it meant that Lancelot has arrived in Arus as well. They had had a separate ongoing argument about the Pallendria-Arus pact.'Ketherdin you don't understand, this has to happen and I'm just trying to help you make it good.' His father said, 'I want you to be happy.'
'You don't understand how much he hates me! How could I be happy with him?’
'He doesn't hate you, if he hated you he wouldn't be here now. If you don't believe me go find him and ask him yourself, he's probably in the clearing with Shirogane right now.' Theodrin retorted, and once again, Ketherdin stormed out.'What am I going to do with him Caroh?' He felt bad after hearing that, but he pushed it away. Instead of climbing the stairs to his chamber and slamming the door, Ketherdin walked out a side door into the warm light of the setting sun, and wandered into the forest. He didn't return until the sky had darkened. Now at the window, Ketherdin did feel awful. He was full of confliction. On one hand, the thought of him accompanied a bitter taste on his tongue. His hatred for Lancelot was beginning to cement in his mind, and he was almost sure he couldn't go back —Writing that damned letter had surely fixed that.He had sent it only to find silence in return. Maybe if Lancelot had actually read what he had written and understood how he felt... Ketherdin leaned back from the window, closing the stained glass panes. He turned from the window, and sighed into the dark of his chamber. No... no. He couldn't force Lancelot to care. But if he would just listen to what he had to say, maybe, just maybe, he would. And they could fix this whole mess.He walked to his bed, and fell face-first on the fur blanket. Stupid Lancelot. Stupid tournament. Stupid pact. Stupid treaty. Stupid him for taking it all out on his father. Stupid... everything. He was going to let himself wallow pathetically for a while longer, but a thought struck him out of this stupor. Lancelot had challenged him, that was his response. He had torn his heart open for him, and his reply was a battle? Keith shot up.He must have read it, he’d sent it a month ago. He must have read it. And... he wanted to fight Ketherdin? In Arus? In a wager for honor? He had told Lancelot the torments of his heart, apologized over and over... now he knew, now he knew the truth. His brow furrowed as the words became clear.Lancelot hated him. The early morning passed by with a flurry of activity. Shirogane had the boys up right after dawn, cleaning bowls and the pot used for stew in a stream nearby, then they straightened up the site, locked their belongings in their trunks, and set out for a sparring session. They had left the forest and now stood in an empty corner of the clearing. They dropped their swords and began to put on the armor they'd be using for the tournament. Shirogane watched on and shooed onlookers away. Once they were ready, They sheathed their swords and prepared themselves as Shirogane raised his arm, and threw it down. The boys drew their swords, facing each other across the dewy grass. The scraping of steel rung in the morning air as the duel began. Lance stepped first, leading with his right foot. His sword swung low as he forced it underhand. Hunk leaned forwards and brought his blade down into Lance's. A perfect block. Lancelot slipped his blade from underneath Hunk's and lifted it again for a shoulder strike. He was fast, but Hunk was there. Again blocking the blow. He wasn't going to be playing defense for long though. In the few seconds that Lance stumbled back Hunk had lunged and knocked the flat of his blade against Lance's chestplate, the sound clattered out, and the movement forced him back even farther. He was playing offense now. Lance staggered to regain a solid footing, he barely stood strong enough to counter the force of Hunk's blade. He had to get out of there, Hunk continued to force him farther back into a corner. Lancelot blocked again and again, he was scrambling to find an opening to escape. But Hunk was always on top of him. He parried again and again, and as Hunk raised his arm for a blow that was sure to knock him off his feet he saw the opening. In an instant he flashed his sword up, blocking Hunk's blow from below. He used the fraction of a pause to turn and run, getting himself clear. Lance pushed his sweaty hair off his brow as he regained his breath and stance. That had been close, too close. He shouldn't have let himself be caught in that corner. But he was out now. Hunk turned to meet Lance again and before he had the chance to charge again Lance was there. They sparred long and hard. Their equally matched skills lead them to a standstill, and Shirogane called them off."Good warm up you two! You're certainly ready for this." Hunk and Lance exchanged a glance and beamed,"Now," Shirogane continued, "let's do a little one-on-one. 'But we should avoid anything intense, you guys have to fight good tomorrow.""Yeah, no spraining anything Hunk." Lance teased."Wh- Okay. Then no getting your sword stuck in the trees then." Hunk countered."Hey it's me you're fighting." Shiro laughed, "though I will say that watching Lance fish a broadsword out of that Oak was very amusing." Both he and Hunk laughed. Lance whined loudly, he hated that story."Ohh, come on guys!" That evening electricity zapped through the air, a storm previously unseen swept through the Arusian plains with vigor. It soaked the trees and the dry earth, filling streams and creating mudslides. This night was dark and bleak, the few that slept, slept poorly as thunder boomed overhead. Lancelot could not sleep, nor Hunk, nor Ketherdin. The three of them knew the next day they would meet, and battle not only for glory, but dignity and respect. It would be a day that could change everything.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Ketherdin woke early the next morning with a headache. He cringed through his breakfast and avoided his father, Caroh too. He had to focus on himself today, he had to be at his best. He walked back up to his room to pack his armor and feed Talon, maybe even pick up some papers that still fell in disarray around his desk. He dressed in his good working clothes and packed for the day. After, he slipped out through a side door and ran to the stables. It was still early morning, he wouldn't have to be at the tournament grounds until noon.He half sprinted down the familiar path, which was slippery with mud. He slowed as he reached the building and whistled out for Red. She flicked her ears and turned to meet him. "Hello pretty girl." Ketherdin sighed, reaching up to stroke her face, "You need some company?" Ketherdin spent the rest of the morning on a pile of dry hay talking incessantly to Red about anything and everything that came to mind. The overcast sky gave no tell to what hour it was. So after Ketherdin had finally talked himself into boredom, he realized he had stayed much longer than he had intended. He cursed and saddled Red up quickly, barely off his feet before they took off, following a path that led them through the Royal City. Red's horseshoes clicked loudly against the cobblestones. They dodged carts and pedestrians, winding through the streets. When the two finally made their way down the slippery hill to the tournament grounds, Ketherdin spotted his father waiting outside the Royal tent. Ketherdin avoided eye contact as he dismounted Red and tied her to a post. He shrugged on his pack full of armor and slipped past his father's glower."You're late." Was all Theodrin said to him. Ketherdin entered the tent with as much reserve as he could muster, but was almost immediately bombarded by Caroh, who accosted him for his tardiness and irresponsibility and whatever else. Ketherdin wasn't listening. He just began to strap on his armor and hoped that he'd see Shirogane soon. His headache persisted and had his left temple throbbing. Caroh slipped out of the tent at one point or another. He had just fit his gauntlets when the entrance of the tent was shifted aside, when he saw Shirogane step through, they both burst into grins."Shiro!" Ketherdin exclaimed, his teacher, mentor, and friend responded with an embrace and a hearty laugh."Hello Keith," Shiro stepped back and knocked on his armor. There was a goofy grin on his face, "ready to win?""It's the only thing I'm here for." Ketherdin laughed."I expect nothing else hah! But those two Pallendrian boys might give you a rough time.""I expect nothing else. Otherwise, I wouldn't have any competition. What am I up against?" Ketherdin asked curiously. He pulled his helm out of his pack, admiring the metalwork."Two of the finest swordsmen and archers I've ever met, that Lancelot is quite the shot!" Said Shiro, placing his hands in his hips. Ketherdin tried not to set his jaw."So I've heard..." Ketherdin knew he was going to beat Lancelot today, no matter what. He wasn't going to let some string-bean of a prince make a fool of him in his own country. Shirogane continued conversation as Keitherdin laced up his greaves, and before they knew it, the bells began to ring throughout the city, echoing deeply through the trees. It was time. Shirogane bid farewell to Keitherdin with a slap on the back and wishes of good luck. Ketherdin thanked him and watched him leave. He then took up his sword and shield, and slung them over his back. Grabbed his helm, and stepped outside of the tent. By now most of the civilians had arrived, and the few that spotted him shouted out a cheer, he responded with a wave and continued on his way. He was supposed to be at the main judging ring behind the jousting pitch, as it was near to where most of the challenges and competitions would be held. Theodrin stood tall and proud at the edge of the raised platform, a massive crowd at his feet. Ketherdin, luckily, had arrived in time to hear the speech about Arusian pride. Theodrin went on about the founding of Arus, the hardships and war they'd faced. The crowd rejoiced as he praised Arus and its one-hundred and thirty years. He also announced that and though the tournament was the traditional celebration of Arus, he was hosting a Masquerade ball- on Ketherdin's birthday, of all days- to celebrate the one-hundred and thirty years. He finished his speech with praises to Arus and promises of a bright future. The crowd beneath him cheered loudly for a good minute, but soon dispersed and herded themselves towards the archery field, where the first challenge was to begin. The archery field was a long strip of land on the edge of the forest, targets stood at different distances and different heights. Both Lancelot and Hunk were ushered in line by Shirogane, and watched each archer take their mark and shoot twenty arrows into whichever targets they pleased. Many were fairly good, others poor, but few were excellent. The people who were, were Farina the staff wielder, a stocky farmer, and professional huntsmen or guards. Neither Lancelot nor Hunk had yet seen a hint of the Arusian Prince, but Shirogane had promised he was there. Soon it was Hunk's turn, and he walked up to the judge. The judge, a short woman with a startlingly deep complexion, asked for Hunk's name, and called it out as she had for the many prior competitors,"Hunk Son of Hammond, a Pallendrian!" People cheered politely. The judge stepped back and motioned for Hunk to begin. He removed his bow from his quiver, and tested the string. Then, he double-checked his arrows.Lance held his breath as Hunk notched his first arrow, aimed, and released. The wooden arrow whizzed through the air and struck through the nearest hide target with a 'thwuck'.Next was the third farthest target, which he struck straight-center. Then the sixth farthest. People were starting to cheer. By the twentieth 'thwuck', Hunk had struck center target nineteen times, only missing the farthest shot to the farthest target. It was impressive, and squeezed him into the 'excellent' category. Lance gave him an excited smile and laugh when he returned to them."You did great!" He said. Hunk grinned and stood by Shirogane, he looked winded."Thanks Lance. Now get out there and show them what you've got." Hunk said, gesturing playfully to the field."No problem." Lance replied, drawing out the vowels. He turned, walked, and met the Judge."Name and City of origin." She stated."Lancelot Clain of Pallendria." Lance replied. The judge raised her eyebrows."I didn't think you'd actually come. Heh. Well show us what you can do Lancelot." She called out his name and the crowd stirred. The Prince of Pallendria was an archer!Lance blocked them out and stepped up to the field. He drew his bow and fetched an arrow. Inhaling deeply as he notched it. The blue and white colored fletching scratched his cheek as he drew the string back. He then found his first mark -the fifth farthest target. He loosened his grip, and exhaled. The arrow flew from his fingers, marking just below the center of the target. He kept the crowd out of his mind, notched another arrow. He chose the sixth farthest target. Inhale, exhale... release. Hit. The seventh, twice. The eighth, once. The ninth, three times. The tenth, eleven times. He was down to his last arrow, and his sight was clear. Notch. Inhale. Aim. Exhale. Release. He successfully struck he tenth target, twelve times.Lance burst into a grin, turning around to see Shirogane and Hunk, who were cheering loudly. He'd done it! He ran to them tackling Hunk with a half-hug. Their armor clattered together. People in the crowd cheered respectfully."I did it!" Cheered Lance, he got a pat on the back from Shirogane."I think you're Pallendria's Eagle-Eye." His mentor said with a laugh."'Sharpest eyes there ever were!" Lance said laughing along."Heh, maybe we should just call you a 'sharpshooter'" Hunk mused."I like that!" Lance smiled. The rest of the archery competition was rather underwhelming, buried beneath his own pride. Even when Ketherdin showed up in his shining armor, it felt lack-luster in comparison. Especially when the Arusian Prince did rather mediocre work. When Hunk commented on his marksmanship with just a dash of triumph, Lance was beaming with it. He had beaten Ketherdin already! As soon as the Arusian turned to leave, Lance caught his eye and gave him a prideful glare. The Prince ignored him, continuing on his way. It was rather infuriating for Lance, who's face flushed red, but neither Shirogane nor Hunk wanted to hear it.Both Charlotte and Aikah had soon found the boys and congratulated them on the archery, Charlotte was especially proud. There were still a few hours until their next competition, so to keep Lance from hunting down Ketherdin himself, they all walked together to the wrestling pit, and watched as muscular men and women chocked and strangled each other."This is a rather, uh, Medieval sport isn't it?" Charlotte said to Shirogane. Shiro laughed and said he didn't think it 'd be going anywhere. Soon enough, it was time for them to depart. They said casual goodbyes as the boys headed towards the arena where the next challenge would be held. Swordplay. They arrived just as the rules were presented, and listened closely. Then one of the announcers read off the list of 'randomized' opponents. Hunk was first to be named, followed immediately by Ketherdin's name."No way! Hunk switch places with me, I have to go up against him!" Lance cried, "Ugh! This is so unfair!""Lan-" Shiro began, only to be interrupted."I mean, we're the rivals!""Lance you-" Hunk tried to explain."The two rival princes from Pallendria and Arus! Who wouldn't want to see us fight?! I have got to talk to this Judge-""LANCE!" Hunk cried, "You're up against Ketherdin a few rounds after I am.""Oh." Lance said, realizing his impatience had gotten the better of him. "Well... Good." Shiro laughed. Time flew quickly as Hunk strapped his sword around his waist. When he was called over, Ketherdin was already waiting. His iron armor gleaming in the sun. He looked distinctly powerful in full armor, like the royalty he truly was. Hunk quickly noted the height difference between them. Ketherdin hadn't grown much since the last time he'd seen him. With a deep breath, Hunk stepped into the arena. It was more of a small fenced in pen than an 'arena'. There was barely just enough space for maneuverable combat. As Hunk walked, the chest plate placed atop his broad shoulders glinted in the mid afternoon sun. He almost outshone Ketherdin himself. Undoubtedly, an unforgettable match was about to begin. Though the crowd gaped as the Pallendrian came forth, Ketherdin appeared unmoved. Although, Lance swore he saw the Arusian tense as his friend approached. A good judgment too, the one thing that the Pallendrians had on their side was Shirogane, and his helpful negligence for secrecy of combat. For all Ketherdin knew the two of them knew all the ins and outs of his technique, and he knew nothing of them. He had no idea what type of power Hunk could wield. It was good judgement.Without cue they took their respective places in the arena. Dust rose in wake of their footsteps, and Lance immediately noted it as an asset. The crowd grew quiet. He felt Shirogane behind him, tensing with each breath. Lance understood why, before him were two of the best men he had ever trained, it was really his moment. Then a tall man —the blade-master, trainer of Arus's soldiers, and judge of swordplay— stood on a crate outside of the edge of the arena. He raised his arms, and with a gruff voice called out,"Swordsmen to your marks!"Hunk and Ketherdin drew their swords from their sheathes, the soft scrape of steel carrying through the crowd. Lance quickly glanced at Hunk. His expression was a mixture of fear, determination, and hope. Lance whispered out loud that he knew he'd beat the Prince, that Hunk was even better than him with a blade, that in close combat he had the advantage. The blade-master went over the rules once again. To win one opponent must disarm the other, or pin him to the ground, and that would be no problem for Hunk, who towered over his opponent. A wild gust of wind howled through the trees. The blade-master finished, and paused, heightening the tension. Then threw down his arms as he yelled,"Fight!" Ketherdin immediately lept into action, using his speed to gain the upper hand. His agility was incredible. Hunk was ready for it, he drove his heels into the ground and caught Ketherdin's blade on impact. With this first slap of metal the crowd grew wild. Crying out in a chorus of sound. Hunk used his height to overpower the Prince, leaning down as he pushed farther out with his blade. The force pushed Ketherdin back and he staggered for balance, obviously unprepared for the strength of his opponent. The crowd roared, Lance and Shirogane along with them.Ketherdin regained his balance and threw himself the Pallendrian a second time. Hunk prepared himself for another forceful attack, rooting himself into the ground. Ketherdin must have spotted his pattern of movement, he changed his force and slowed as he reached his target. The blades each hit the opposers flat softy, creating the faintest hiss of steel. The two opponents made eye-contact and Hunk rushed his blade furiously into Ketherdin. It put the Arusian off balance, but he turned the stumble in his favor by twisting around Hunk and scraping the edge of his chest-plate. He had been aiming for a gap in the armor but Hunk had moved quickly to protect himself. Keitherdin returned to the offensive, attempting to hack at the tiny holes in Hunk's defense. They carried on in evenly matched blows, but Ketherdin was using Hunk's defense against him. He would lunge to a vulnerable area which Hunk would immediately protect, but then twist at the last second to make a cut in the spaces between his gauntlets. It was wearing him down, the Arusian's speed and accuracy were almost inconceivable. Soon the duel began to sway in the Prince's favor, and the cheering increased. But then, just as Ketherdin made another lunge at Hunk, he sidestepped and smashed both elbows back into Ketherdin's Helm. The Arusian stumbled and fell to his hands and knees, and the crowd exploded. Hunk stood above his opponent, arms raised to deal a blow to with the flat of his blade, one that would surely win the round, but before he could swing the Arusian Prince rose, and, kneeling, swung his sword up a final time. The movement was extremely fast, a blur, no one could tell what had happened until Hunk's blade fell with a clatter to the ground. The two opponents stood opposite to the other, the shorter rising to his feet with his blade forcing the other back to the fence.Ketherdin had won. Ketherdin stood a few feet away from the arena leaning against a flagpole. His chest still heaving from his fight with Hunk. He'd originally been confident that he could defeat the Pallendrian, but it seemed he'd misjudged Hunk, and his skills. That was a mistake on his part. It also didn't help that in the last year, the man had grown about eight inches in height. Besides that, Hunk hit him over the head. His headache had immediately burst into an out-right migraine when his opponent's elbows met his skull. He had made too many mistakes. Made so many false assumptions... He couldn't help but throw his head back into the pole, things were not going well.'First Father and I fought, then I'm late for the actual tournament, I did terribly at archery, I'm now trying to avoid my father and Caroh, I've only spoken to Shiro once, I almost lost my first round... Nothing is going right!' His frustration quickly turned into annoyance, especially knowing that he'd have to fight him next. God, he'd only seen the man once that day but even then he had to fight to remain calm, keep his cool. There were many uncertainties. Ketherdin continued grumbling to himself as he half-heartedly watched the next match. A bit later he saw Shiro waving at him, so Ketherdin beckoned him over."Good to see you again." Keitherdin said to Shiro as he approached."Hm. How's your head doing? That was a pretty good hit." Shiro said, stopping beside him."I sure felt it." Ketherdin replied, rubbing his temples. Shiro gave him half of a smile."You're not up to par today. Anything wrong?" He asked."Nothing important. I'd much prefer today to be over besides anything." Ketherdin said glumly."Really? That's upsetting, you were so exited last time I was here.""I know, just... today hasn't been a great day for me." The prince said, lowering his eyes."Hm. Well, you're fighting Lance next so I'd get out of that mood if I were you." Shiro warned, but his tone was light, "But if you need to talk, meet me tonight at my camp, we're set up just beyond those trees." Shiro said, pointing to their left. Ketherdin feigned a smile."Thanks Shiro.""Anytime, Keith." There was a short pause in conversation as Ketherdin continued to rub his temples."When's our match?" Ketherdin asked, "I hadn't really been listening to the announcer.""As soon as this one ends." Shiro said, then he smirked, "I'll let you know that Lance over there is just rearing to go.""Hmph. Wonderful." He replied sarcastically, Shiro actually laughed."At least you'll have a good opponent." A pause, "I've got to get back over there, it looks like Lance is struggling with his sheath." He was. He had put it on upside-down."Okay. I'll see you." Ketherdin replied."Fight a good match for me alright?" Shiro called as he walked away. Then he was gone. Well, only a few feet away, helping Lance unbuckle and re-adjust his sword sheath. Maybe it wouldn't be such a difficult battle after all. The second time Ketherdin stepped into the arena, his headache was almost gone. The dust that clouded his footsteps settled as he waited for his opponent. The crowd around the arena had increased in size. No one wanted to miss this. Ketherdin wasn't looking up when Lancelot entered, but the roar of the crowd was enough to announce his arrival. When their eyes met, they both set into a cold glare. Ketherdin wouldn't have said he was trying his very best not to be hostile.Lance marked his place, swinging his sword in wide circles with only the flick of his wrist. People in the crowd cheered and gasped as he swung the blade around a final time. Keith noticed he was taller, and definitely just as cocky. The Blade-Master stepped back onto the crate, and once again, raised his arms to silence the crowd."Swordsmen to your marks!" He shouted. Silence fell, and the Princes took their positions. Finally, finally... it was their time to fight. Keith felt the old anger rising in him, and gripped his blade tighter. The blade-master waited for a moment, threw down his arms and yelled,"Fight!"This time, Lancelot was the first to engage, barreling towards Ketherdin full speed. Ketherdin stepped back, and dodged aside at the last moment. Lancelot flew past him, not having time to turn. Ketherdin decided staying out of range was a good plan for now. He may wear out his spark before he even landed a blow, and that wouldn’t be any fun. He stayed stoic as the Pallendrian halted, spun around and charged him once again. Just as before, Ketherdin side stepped and avoided the attack completely. He moved away as Lancelot turned."You trying to make a fool of me, Sire?" He mocked. Ketherdin paused, but stood his ground and did not retaliate. Lancelot sniffed, took back up his guard and ran at him for a third time. Ketherdin was ready for him now, from what he'd already seen he knew he'd be able to win. He caught the Pallendrian's blade as it slid through the air, locking him into a standstill as he slowed. Lancelot stayed strong and matched his force. They stood still and Lancelot caught his eye. The same cocky expression still plastered on his face."Not going too well over there my liege?" He said, his voice under strain. And Keith again, faltered, what on earth did he think he was doing? Just then Lancelot's blade slipped, and they continued their dance. Steel hissed against steel as the duel bore on. Lancelot pulled a twist that left a bruise on Ketherdin's shoulder, they collided again only to be pushed back. Lancelot continued to mock and insult Ketherdin between movements.Lancelot would yell, 'Good chance missing THIS!', when he took to the offensive. In the first few minutes his jests and jabs turned from confusing teases to infuriating blows. Ketherdin was trying very hard to keep his attitude optimistic, but Lancelot was wearing him down like water over rocks. He wasn't taking the fight seriously, or Ketherdin himself. Soon the Arusian felt close to his breaking point. After an especially hefty push, Ketherdin managed to fell him to his knees."This is a competition," He yelled, pointing his blade at Lance, "not a game. If you wish to best me in wits, then do not come at me with a sword.""Hilarious, I came here to do both." Lancelot called back. The crowd hissed with excitement. Ketherdin made a face."Your sportsmanship is most unbecoming. Pair that with your faulty swordsmanship and you're nothing but a knife wielding child!" A few people in the crowd gasped."What? Me? I'm only mimicking what you've shown me over the years." Lancelot countered. Ketherdin's face grew hot as the crowd raised in volume. He threw himself back into the fight. Just as expected, Lance's comments slowly brought Ketherdin's temper to a boil. As the minutes wore on, Ketherdin began to lose himself. He got sloppy, and Lancelot could see through every attack. Ketherdin was starting to think he wouldn't be able to bring himself back down, so he pushed himself harder and harder, while Lance kicked up dust and slipped out of reach. The dust was making his eyes water."What's the matter my liege?" Lancelot called again after a particularity intense break, "I had thought you were the best in Arus, but it seems that now you will be beaten by two Pallendrians in a row. Pathetic!" The mockery in Lance's voice drained into malice, "I guess I shouldn't have expected so much of a lapdog huh?!" Ketherdin stiffened. He ran at his opponent again, forcing Lance back to the edge of the arena with several well placed blows. Then the Arusian turned and stalked away, he halted in the center of the arena, head hanging.'Patience yields focus.' He told himself as he burned, 'He's only trying to get to you to make you angry. Calm down Keith.' The Prince took a deep shuddering breath to attempt steady himself. But Lancelot was quick on the uptake. He had already risen, and stood in the corner of the arena, blade poised."Running away from me again?" Lancelot shouted, his chest was heaving, his expression, wild. "Well, I don't expect much else from you, you coward!" Ketherdin's head snapped up. He felt something in his heart grown wild and unkept. His grip tightened and his brow furrowed. He turned to face his opponent, his enemy, his damned fiancé. Body shaking as he took a step forwards. From the edge of the arena, Shiro paled. He took another step. And another. He walked, hurried, ran, sprinted, sword raised. He threw his arms down as he leaped towards his opponent, crashing past any outer defenses. He kicked Lancelot straight in the chest, making the iron armor ring as his boots collided with the metal. Lancelot was thrown off his feet, falling back into the dust. Ketherdin landed heavily near Lancelot's feet, he fallen hard and his incisors broke the flesh inside his cheek. He scrambled to his knees and pushed himself up again, tasting blood. Lancelot tried to rise but Ketherdin was fast. Using his foot to push him back into the earth, pinning him.Lancelot began to thrash, trying to pull Ketherdin off of him. He looked down into Lances eyes, and was surprised to find fear in them.Ketherdin stepped off his opponent, raised his sword above his head. His face was hot, and he was humiliated. He had been beaten again and again. He was supposed to be the idol. The Prince his people could look up to and know that they'd be protected, guided... But he had failed. He had failed his people, failed his father, failed his own name. He was a coward. And why? Because of him. Because of him. It had always been him. He threw his sword down with a cry, and Lancelot rolled out of the way. But the blade would have never made a mark. Ketherdin stabbed it into the earth, far right of where Lancelot had lain. The Arusian prince stood, and walked away, gasping for breath. Lance was in a similar condition, crouching in the dirt. The arena was dead silent as they waited for the next move. Then whispers rose in a quiet hush. What had happened? Who had won?Ketherdin raised his head. There was an immediate hush as he turned to face his opponent a final time, his eyes devoid of emotion.Shiro held his breath, 'Please don't do something stupid.'"Prince Lancelot Clain of Pallendria!" Ketherdin shouted, blood dripped from his mouth, "I challenge thee to a Joust!" Lancelot Lance pulled up his horse to the edge of the ring. Beneath his armor sweat dripped into his eyes. The day was cooling down, the sun staining the sky orange, but he still felt as hot as ever. He was terrified. He saw Ketherdin ride up to the opposite side. His scowl was deep, obscured by polished steel. Something in his expression made Lance feel cold, and fear again flashed through his body. The minutes grew closer. Lance straightened himself in the unfamiliar saddle, wishing for Blue. He stretched his wrists out one at a time before clasping his reins tightly. He watched as people in the stands shifted nervously.People were herded to the jousting pit almost as soon as Ketherdin had challenged him. Shiro earlier had explained to him and Hunk there was usually only one demonstration of Jousting during the entire tournament. And then it was done by professionals. He had no idea why Ketherdin would have challenged him to this.Lancelot, of course, had accepted it without question. And the action got him a stern slap up the back of the skull from Shiro."What are you thinking?!" He had cried, his voice low so no one could hear."He challenged me. There's no way I could have declined!""It's would have been better if you had." Shiro growled, "Now your insolence has brought the entire tournament— The entire city to know about your feud with Ketherdin." He paused and took a breath. "But now there's no way out of it. Not even the King can stop this now." Someone hurried past him, a man carrying a lance. He passed it to Ketherdin who ripped it from his hands. Every detail of his posture screamed hostile.A man caught Lancelot's attention, holding up a lance meant to be his own. Lance picked it up hesitantly, trying to keep his hands from shaking. This was it.This was it.'Stop it,' He told himself, 'you're the Prince of Pallendria, a future Paladin, the best archer around! You can win, this isn't swordplay and it isn't just chance. You can prove him wrong, you can defeat him.' They waited in silence as an announcer informed the crowd and participants of the commencement of the Joust itself, and listed off the rules and manner of the Joust. The King had ordered that soft lances as to not pierce flesh and to keep the princes from serious harm. Lance held onto every word, every moment like it was his last, his confidence ebbing into dread. Then Theodrin himself spoke, declaring he would commence the Joust himself. His voice stood strong as he called out."Lances at the ready!" Lance's grip grew tighter. He held onto the lance just as Shiro had instructed him a few hours ago. There was nothing anyone could do now. There was going back. He pushed his boots deeper into their stirrups.Across from him Ketherdin tensed, and he knew there'd be no mercy. The air was dead still, the sky turned to red. Every breath was baited, in the distance a horse whinnied."At your marks!" Each horse took a step forward. "Charge!"Both horses took off in incredible speed, clouds of dust flew high into the air. The princes's armor glinted brilliantly in the last light of day. The lances were set strong. And as the gap closed, they saw too late what was to come. Lance closed his eyes. Immediately a tremendous force knocked his shoulder back, the shock of the hit spiraling back up his arm. He dropped the lance and fell back in his saddle. His horse only traveling a few feet before he slid off the side, falling on his back. He hit his head on the earth, and felt his brain bounce against his skull. Everything was dark.It took him a second to recognize the scream. Then to open his eyes. His vision was blurry at first, sound was muffled, like it was blocked by water. He sat up slowly, then turned and stumbled to see what he had done.He saw Ketherdin on the ground, heard the groans of agony, his lance on the ground; the tip streaked with red blood. Shirogane being pushed to the side, Theodrin leaping from the stands. He stood, and took a shaky step closer. There was a hole in Keith's chain mail, slick with blood. The tip had been sharp. He stumbled back in shock. Two men lifted Ketherdin to his feet, and the princes's eyes met for a final time.
What had he done?
