“Yoonji!” You call the beautiful new transfer student over to your small group in the cafeteria with a small wave. You were the vice student council president, second only to the always gentle Kim Joonie, who was thee student council president, so, it was your duty to make sure your student body was well received and worked as a happy family, at least for your grade. You could tell the first time that when you met her, she was an aloof girl, keeping herself guarded and closed off to others around her. You couldn’t imagine transferring to a different school your senior year after so long at a different school with all the friends she’s made. You figure she had to be fairly popular with how amazingly talented she was at everything. She said it was due to her father getting a transfer at his company, switching to an all-girls school here at Spring Day Academy. And you are so glad she did. Not only were her grades remarkable, blowing even Joonie out of the water sometimes, but her simple elegance was breathtaking. Too much for you to handle sometimes, sitting right next to her for most of the day...Though, you kept your secret crush to your most trusted advisor, Kim Seokmin, hoping your feelings would remain under wraps. She comes over to your rowdy table, tray in hand with a wry smile on her lips, midnight silky hair looking as perfect and smooth - you wish your hair would look as fresh and styled as hers did on the daily. She eats quietly after a small wave back to you as Jung Hori goes on and on about the weekend you all have planned together to go up to her parent’s lake house for the next two days. She starts eating her chicken nuggets quietly as the group rambles on and on about the lake and how pretty it was. You are unable to focus on the topic though, too blown away at the dark-haired beauty across from you chime in your thoughts on which inflatable pool noodles to bring. She looks up at you, rich eyes casting up from under her full black lashes, catching you staring for what must be the hundredth time in your friendship. Was it a friendship or was it her tolerating everyone around her, deciding that your group wasn’t that bad? You couldn’t figure it out as you look back to your applesauce which you scoop into your mouth, turning your head to look to your right at Park Jiminnie, who was arguing with Kim Taehyungwa about driving and sleeping arrangments. Jeon Kookie slaps your shoulder roughly saying that you and Yoonji get the pullout couch for being absent in the conversation. OH.You feel your cheeks flush, looking back to your barely touched plate in a rush for no reason, missing the tiny smile Yoonji gives you as she watches you from across the table, corners of her mouth twitching up at your quick action. You know that this weekend was either going to go swimmingly - avoiding her with the fluttering butterflies in the bottom of your stomach or you would be drowning in your feelings by the end of it. You weren’t sure which one was worse at this point. ---------“Seokmin…” You trail off after having closed the trunk to her jeep, packed full with your bags and floatation devices for this weekends outing. “What am I going to do about toniiiight?” You whine as you hop into the passenger seat next to her. She pops her gum as pushes her giant white framed sunglasses to her head in one fluid motion making you giggle at your dork of a best friend. You loved everyone in the group, you really did, but Seokmin and you really connected on another level you just couldn’t with the other girls. “I think that you should just go with the flow, y/n, and be yourself!” She says, turning the key to her bright blue car, revving the engine. “She’s always been the most comfortable with you anyways, hasn’t she?” Seokmin asks you gently smiling, keeping her sunglasses fixed gaze solely on the road. “I guess.” You say, sinking down in your strapped in seat, only getting so far. You think about it for a minute. You guess it’s true, she had warmed up to you immensely after she overheard your group discussing what music you all liked, figuring out that you loved the same bands through and through. She kind of stayed with the group after that, lingering around more and more before your group invited her to sit with you of you during a pep rally at the beginning of the year. Now that time was almost up for your little group of fun, the end of the school year almost here, you didn’t know whether to drop any mention of your crush on her or just go with it. Something in the universe was pushing you to go that way, to follow your heart rather than your head this time. You weren’t even sure if she liked the same thing as you did - girls - but, it was worth a shot, right? What did you have to lose other than her friendship maybe? After a long car ride of loud rap music up to the thirty minute away lake, Serendipity Lake, you had made up your mind. “Alight…” You huff as Seokmin pulls up to the cabin behind the rest of the crew. “I’m gonna do it.” You state confidently hopping out of the passenger seat. “Do what?” The soft, slow drawl of none other than your crush comes from the right of you. You whip your head around to the sight of the raven-haired beauty carrying a cooler full of soda pop and other caffeinated drinks up to the cabin, cheeks ablaze. She quirks her brow, hidden behind her dark fringe as she stares at you with a sparkle behind her gentle eyes. Your mouth unhinges and closes several times, Seokmin sorting as she pops the trunk open. “She’s gonna help me carry all of these inside!” She chuckles as you nod vigorously, hair and sunglasses bouncing with your motions. “And she’s not going to complain!” She laughs out loud again as you groan, trudging over to handle all the stuff you’ve packed in her while Yoonji shrugs her shoulders and disappears into the wooden house. “Close one.” You mutter, arms being packed full of supplies and goods for the weekend trip. “I bet you’d like to get closer to her.” Seokmin jokes, wiggling her brows behind her thick frames at you. You scoff and whip around. “I’m clocking out of this conversation!” “I need you to clock back in and help me!” Seokmin shrieks from her spot on the pavement. Sink or swim, you thought to yourself as Seokmin fills your arms more. Sink or swim. ------------“Y/n! Yoonji!” Kookie calls from the wading water, waist deep already. “Come in you two!” She demands with a low whine! Her short hair was already soaking wet, dripping down her face as Taehyungwa and Jimmie continue their onslaught of attacks from either side of her. “I told you: I can’t swim!” You retort back to her, sticking out your tongue, sitting on the beach chairs, far away from the mass of liquid on shore. You fold your arms over yourself, sitting back down on the white long beach chair in a silent huff.“You can’t swim?” Yoonji asks you quietly off to the right of you. You whip around. You haven’t really gotten a good look at her, too embarrassed to look at her directly, knowing your face would be redder than the sun, but damn if she wasn’t lovely. Dressed in black from head to toe, wearing black long sleeves and leggings, she looked like she was prepared for winter, except the giant straw hat and tinted glasses which humored you slightly. You shake your head, hoping to hide the blush that was lighting your skin positively on fire. “Nope!” You give a sheepish grin pointing to her now on a similar looking beach chair. “What’s with the getup?” You ask with a smile. She looks down to her covered swim-shoe clad feet and back to you in a moment of silence. “I don’t like the sun...or the water.” You nod in understanding, looking to the girls shrieking in the water. “Can’t swim either?” The sun was setting now, casting beautiful oranges and golden hues across the otherwise blue lake. “No,” Yoonji whispers looking at you affectionately - small smile on her perfect M-shaped lips - though you miss it, too busy watching Joonie and Hori play chicken with Taehyungwa and Jiminnie in the depths of the lake. “No, I can’t…”-----------That night before bed, Seokmin played her acoustic guitar - which she’s named RJ affectionately - playing several hits and making up her own silly ones. Kookie and yourself dance to the majority of them, breaking every so often to build a s’more and giggle at the goofy expressions of your group of girls who were cackling at your antics. Seokmin was taking requests after tiring of only letting Kookie and Jiminnie pick the music selection when Yoonji perks up suddenly. “Do you know the Siren’s Song?” She asks in a slow, raspy drawl, sitting next to Joonie, making your heart flutter at just a few words she’s spoken.Seokmin looks puzzled and plays a series of chords, looking up to Yoonji who only nods in approval, midnight bob swinging with her up and down motions. As Seokmin plays a few more melodic chords, Yoonji begins to sing. It’s not really like singing, It’s like someone pouring light through a stained glass window, a vibrant melody of sounds echoes in the forest around the group of girls. You feel so happy, so full, so uplifted by what sounded like an ancient language rather than a song that anyone would know of nowadays. Your heart was soaring. It felt like she was singing directly at you, which was a silly thought because her eyes were closed, sitting on the log across the way. You feel entranced, like you are in a bubble of emotions, like you are the only one in the world at the moment her voice climbs, hitting notes that you weren’t sure her low voice could muse out. You are enraptured by the beast that was this song, the guitar and the vocals working in tandem, awakening a flicker of desire that rises and bubbles in you for the woman singing the song. The ebb and flow of the music makes you almost see stars at how beautifully the two sounded together, Yoonji’s voice a stunning clear tone compared to her usual low and even speaking voice. Yoonji’s voice fades away as Seokmin strokes the strings of the guitar a few three times and the song ends, leaving everyone to sit there with their mouths wide open, catching mosquitos surely. It feels like the rainbow bubble has been popped once she stopped. No more Yoonji peeps an eye open as Kookie hushes a, “Wow…” out into the open air of the fire pit. You see the pink in her cheeks ignite, or, was that just the light from the fire? You weren’t sure. As everyone cheers for the quietest in the group, you get up and stretch your back, wanting the sweet release of some shut-eye to overtake you and your weary bones. You gasp as you remember who you’d be sleeping next to tonight. The ebony haired siren herself, Min Yoonji. ----------“Do you have enough room?” She asks you, shuffling under the floral printed beige sheets, slipping onto the mattress with you. ‘Play it cool. It’s just a sleepover...In the same bed...With the girl you’ve been crushing on all year…’ You hush your rising blush up to your cheeks with your willpower, watching her snuggle in close to you.“I do yes, t-thank you.” You whisper out, seeing the lights turn off from down the hall, the other groups of girls going to bed too. Yoonji makes a noise of approval, facing you before shutting her eyes and sighing wistfully. It’s very quiet for a few ticks of the old clock hanging above the fireplace mantle. An owl hoots outside, signaling the wildlife of the night coming out to play for the evening. “H-Hey Yoonji?” You question with caution. She grunts in response to your soft voice. “What was your song about? And what language was it in?” You stare at her face, moonlight pouring in through the cracks of the windows. She cracks an eye open at your query, looking at you with that stoic, passive face before closing her eyes and turning over. “Lovers.” She says after another few loud heartbeats of silence. “And Latin.” She responds dryly. More silence. “Goodnight y/n.” Hearing your name grace her lips makes you glow with a nice pinkened hue. You hoped your thunderous heart wasn’t heard over the noises of the night. Why was everything so perfect, so pure, when Yoonji did it? And, why were you such a sucker for it?“G-Goodnight, Yoonji.”-----------‘Can I buy myself a new bladder or will I have to live with this useless one forever?’ You question yourself as you make your way back from the bathroom in the middle of the night. You rub the heel of your palm to your eye, rubbing the sleep out of your sockets. Crickets and birds chirping and hollering for their potential mate outside made you a little sad that your budding, fleeting crush would never go anywhere in the history of anywhere. You were only doing it to yourself, though, never making a steadfast move so the only person you had to blame was yourself. You make your way back to the front room, sleep lingering in your body that you didn’t want to shake again as you head back to the living room - not before peeping in on the girls tucked away in their beds and futons. You couldn’t help it. Maybe it was your strong desire to be a teacher or what, you couldn’t help when the nurturing side showed itself in you. You make it back to the living room, yawning a little too loudly, worried you’d wake your bed partner as your eyes continue to adjust to the moonlit room around you. Under the light colored floral sheets, you wondered where the dark-haired beauty was? You didn’t run into her in the halls and you didn’t see her in any of the girl's rooms.Your heart was sinking as you quietly walked through the whole house, grabbing a flashlight in your silent search of the rooms of the log cabin. The noise from all the nightlife was buzzing, ringing in your ears, making it very difficult to process any sort of emotion happening in your head, a strangled feeling creeping up in your throat now as you search the house like a baffoon. ‘Where is she?!’ You question yourself as your third wave of looking was turning up nothing, no signs of your secret crush. You frantically text her, hearing the ding sound off in the bundle of blankets on the makeshift bed. She didn’t...You hear a splash in the lake that makes you muster a peep of a cry out, hopefully not waking any of the girls, not wanting them to freak out anytime with you. ‘Oh...my goddd....’She DID. You do what any sensible person does and you run out of the log cabin into the night, past the fire pit and onto the tiny dock as fast as your feet could carry you. Your thunderous footsteps were wild, your heartbeat erratic all the blood pumping and flooding into your ears as you have only one thought in mind: find Yoonji. “Yoonji!” You hiss out into the murky depths below, the wooden platform rocking with your fevered running motions getting on said tiny dock. “Yoonji, where are you?” You try a little louder. Something breaches the surface a little further out, as you startle, jumping ten feet in the air at you being scared witless. You lose your balance on the moving, rickety platform falling forwards into the black lake water below. Everything happens in slow motion as your face collides with the cool of the liquid, hands bracing for impact but finding nothing to give purchase to, the water welcoming you and your PJ-clad body all in one go, swallowing you up like you meant nothing to the beast of the tides. The moonlight hits the lake, the ripples still momentarily before your break the surface, gasping for a single gulp of air. You scramble in the lake, body rocked into panic mode, screams being muffled by the water that you were inhaling. Your arms flail, water sprinkling and flying everywhere around you. Your legs kick and kick under you, trying to keep your body afloat, failing miserably. You feel something soft brush your ankle and you swear you are going to die now. Creatures of the deep blue where going to eat you, make you their meal, devour you whole. Immediately, your first instinct is a shark but that would make no sense. Not especially after the soft thing wrap around your ankle and jerk you down to the murky throes of the water towards your certain doom. Your body was growing weak, you could barely resist the pulling of the strong unknown creature to the middle of the lake. You struggle to keep your eyes open, underwater not really being your domain anyways as you struggle to remain conscious, body losing steam with no oxygen to fuel it. You hear the slow drawl of someone talking to you and you try to reawaken your body, you really do. You open your eyes, the inky blackness of being submerged underwater had you feeling like your already terrible vision spotting around the edges. ‘This is it. This is where I die.’ You think as the pulling ceases, two soft - cool feeling - fleshy substances hold your face together. A sudden press of something equally cold happens to your lips, something slimly and strong being forced inside your mouth in a swift motion. Your eyes pop open, you cough and sputter for air realizing someone, or something, had kissed you. And there, in the pits of blackness, in the middle of the lake, was a beautiful woman being illuminated by the moonlight pouring into the water from above. Not just any woman. It was your fond crush, Min Yoonji, staring at your with golden, firey irises. Her raven hair looked a thousand times silkier now than it had ever been, splade around her in a rich, dark halo. Her breasts exposed and out for you to see and rake your eyes over openly, but what really conjured your attention to what lay below her navel, a trail of purple and teal scales. They joined her legs, wrapping her legs you only saw a mere few hours ago a vibrant, gleaming tail full of scales rich and glittering in the fluttering depths of the lake. Wait. What?“Yoonji?” You question, more-so yourself more than anything, realizing that you were breathing. Your hands fly up to your throat, worried you had died, that this wasn’t a dream or something. “What…?” You sputter, not understanding the situation still. A gummy smile plays on her lips, peary canines shining the moonlit waters. “You were right, you really can’t swim.” She chuckles, swimming closer to you. From how close you two where, there was no way to deny that this was not a dream as her face comes to a halt, right in front of your nose. You see the gills float in and out on her neck, filtering water and oxygen to her now half-fish body. “How am I…?” You ask, still in awe and shock from the events of the past ten minutes. “Siren’s kiss.” She taps her lips with her finger, now clawed and hooked a little into talons at the ends. “As long as I’m in the water with you, you get oxygen from me.” She smiles on and you swear you’ve never seen anything more beautiful. “Oh my god…” You mutter under your breath though she’s heard every word you’ve said. You look down at her tail, violets and rich swirls of blue make an appearance everytime she flicks her tail under her. “You kissed me?”“Yes.” She exhales as you glide your head up to meet her burning gaze. “Want to do it again?” Your eyes go wide as she smears her long thumb over your bottom lip in question, staring at you as if you would be her last meal. A shiver ran down your spine as you could only think of the one thing you know about mermaids and merpeople. “Are you going to steal my soul?” You ask quietly, her thumb still tracing over the bottom portion of your pink lips. She lets out a low laugh, sounding like ringing bells. “No, y/n. Not when I’ve been drowning in the thought of you for so long.” Your eyes are going to roll out of their sockets and become fish food with how much you are staring at her unabashed.Yoonji brings your face closer to hers underwater with both of her hands now. “My song was for you and really only you. I know you feel the same, I see your little glances, I feel your wistful sighs all day. I know you’ve wanted this for far too long.” She finishes, golden eyes softening as her perfect lips ghost yours. “Let me give you a proper kiss, a human kiss.” She begs now almost, nostrils flaring in desire, golden eyes burning. You inhale sharply, catching her lips in yours by complete surprise. Your body was working faster with her brain down in these depths. You touch her pale face, peppering her lips with passionate pressing of your flesh to hers, tongues finally finding each other, tangling in and out with the other. Yoonji tastes like salt water taffy which was what you were going to assume what heaven tasted like. Your faces mold into each other, hands holding the other innocently, exploring the wet cavern of the others hot mouths. After more than several minutes of a shared heated kiss in the throes of the lake, you part ways, coming to breathe separately for air. Your shoulders heave as does her chest, but you can’t be concerned to look anywhere other than her eyes, pressing your foreheads together in a soft manner. The world you swore stopped spinning for you and Yoonji in this moment of shared bodies, breathe, and flesh. “My starfish, let’s get you back to land.” She says in that low soft rasp that made your spine shake and stomach do flip-flops at the sound of it. “Why?” You whine as she takes your hands and flips them over to your open palms, pointing with a clawed finger. “You're going to turn into a prune if you aren’t back on land in a minute.” She states, dragging you up to the surface in an easy motion, breaching the still of the water once more. You crawl onto the sandy shore, watching her emerge after you in the pale of the moonlight. Her tail, scales and all, melt right off her body, vanishing into glittering sand in her wake, revealing legs that were almost translucent never seeing the sun hardly ever. You wrap your arms around yourself, a shiver of cold running through your soaking wet frame. “It’s freezing!” You state. Your hair was dripping in your face and you hadn’t a heart to fix it now. Yoonji comes up behind you and pinches the soft flesh of your rear end. “I’ll warm you up, human.” She purrs, smiling over her shoulder as she races you back up to the the log cabin. You stand by the fire pit in bewilderment. You never imagined your weekend would go like this - this swimmingly - all you had to do was go with the flow, and really be yourself. Who would have thunk your little crush was felt in the same manner. ‘My’, you think to yourself as your black-haired beauty saunters up the little hill to the house, ‘how the tides have turned.’ She turns back to you, hair dripping with water running down the side of her face. ‘But, only for the better.’ You affirm in your head, sighing with a smile and following her lead, back into the house.
