Work Text
8AM. Another Tuesday beginning, one more day in which Jungkook seemed too lazy to get up from his own bed. It was not that he didn’t like what he did. On the contrary, he loved it; he loved to be able to live through photography. To be able to capture one moment of happiness of one’s life, or to be able to express so many emotions in one single piece made him feel fulfilled as an artist and as a human. But the truth was that he just wanted to sleep until 2PM once again. ‘Adult life is not as cool as they’ve told me’ he thought as he gathered all of his strength to get up and ready. Making his way down the streets as usual; the spring turning that scenery into something much more pleasing than the past season had provided him. A usual stop at the nearest coffee shop where the attendants already knew about his order. A man who needed his daily dose of caffeine, at the end. That was planned to be a packed day, some photo sessions on his schedule. Another thing that was really being missed on all that adult life mess was ‘lunch hour’; words that combined did not meant a thing anymore for him. 3PM and an empty belly to be filled. He wished he could be just waking up on that exact minute, turning on the video game, and just enjoying his own apartment in peace. He missed vacations, another almost foreign word for him. Grabbing his phone for the first time in a couple of hours, a strange number appeared on his recent conversations. [10:27AM] Anonymous: Hey! It’s me :D
[10:32AM] Anonymous: Are you receiving this text?
[10:34AM] Anonymous: Text me back, if you are. ‘It’s me’ who? Was it some prank? Jungkook stared at the phone, a confused frown planted on his face. It could be a client that he had forgotten to save the numer, or maybe a new client who he spoke to somewhere but forgot. I should be it. He would be texting that person back some hours later, though. ‘I hope they have not given up on me already’, was the thought on his head as he typed an answer. [15:12PM] You: Hello. Who is this?
[15:12PM] You: I’ve received your message but I don’t know who it is, I’m sorry. He was kind and polite, as polite as he could be to a complete stranger. He would not lose a client like that, he was nice enough. That would be okay; he convinced himself like that, taking another bite from his lunch quietly, enjoying the view of the busy street through the restaurant window. Not even 15 minutes later, he felt the buzz on his pocket of a new message coming on his phone. [15:24PM] Anonymous: Oh, I didn’t tell you who it was, sorry. It’s Taehyung.
[15:25PM] Anonymous: The guy you met at the coffee shop.
[15:25PM] Anonymous: We were talking today and you gave me your number. Jungkook couldn’t fake the slightly disappointed and annoyed expression on his face. It wasn’t a client after all, and he was there all worried about nothing. On other areas of thoughts inside his mind, he couldn’t really remember talking to anyone other than the attendant. And he couldn’t really remember any Taehyung, or anyone he met at the coffee shop that he gave his phone number. That guy just got fooled, as it seemed. [15:29PM] You: I’m sorry, Taehyung. I don’t think you’re texting the correct number. The text response this came as soon as Jungkook locked his screen; watching it lighting up again with a new text from that coffee shop meeting he didn’t have. [15:29PM] Anonymous: What? Is it not you? That guy that talked to me at Coco Coffee Shop?
[15:31PM] You: I actually go there every morning but I’ve never really talked to anyone, or given my number to anyone.. I’m sorry. I’m not the one you’re looking for.
[15:32PM] Anonymous: Oh man.. I just got fooled. And here I was thinking I was totally rocking it.
[15:33PM] Anonymous: But hey, I also go there every morning? How do I not know you?
[15:35PM] You: I’m always kinda in a rush because I always seem to get up late, so I don’t really talk to anybody.
[15:37PM] Anonymous: Oh, that’s a shame :(
[15:37PM] Anonymous: I like to read there before going to work. It’s so calm and nice, it’s like a contrast from the busy city in a small bubble. Jungkook didn’t even know why he was still talking to that guy; maybe because of the strange coincidence of attending the same coffee shop; maybe because he seemed so nice, too nice to be fooled by someone that gave him the wrong number on purpose. He didn’t know why but he kept answering, and answering everything. The guys seemed so funny and outgoing, but at the same time, deep and thoughtful. It was really a shame when his lunch time ended and he had to take a little more to answer. It was also a shame when Taehyung’s interval ended and he had to go back to teaching Literature to his classes once again. After being up until 1AM on that night, it started to feel right at some point, somehow. It started to feel like they were just some old high school friends that were reconnecting. It was kinda interesting how the clicked so well just by some couple texts sent for the wrong number. It was easy talking to him, so easy that it was even more pleasant. They formally met on the next day at the coffee shop. The bright smile on Taehyung’s face being shinier than the sun could ever try to be on summer; his happiness overwhelming Jungkook’s soul, infecting him, in a way that he was also happier; his small eyes becoming little moons because of his wide smile. He was almost the definition of the word cute. ‘I’m happy to meet you! Not through the phone and not by mistake now!’ He told Jungkook as he let out a shy chuckle, his cheeks a bright shade of pink. And Jungkook could, indeed, share those feelings. It was amazing how they’d become close so fast, barely 1 month of constant talking and current encounters at the coffee shop. Jungkook could find, somehow, a reason to not be so lazy in the morning on those days, entering the café with a smile on his face, to go along with the one that Taehyung always presented for him. He knew so much about that boy, and he shared so much that people who used to tell him he was ‘reserved’ would be shocked. He really was reserved, that was not a lie. But he couldn’t explain why, he felt somewhat comfortable with Taehyung. He felt like he knew him from other places, other times maybe. He was so easy to be with, so serene. It felt like being embraced, feeling at home, and he digged that feeling. ‘Have you ever seen Leap Year?’ Taehyung asked him one shiny morning, as they enjoyed their everyday morning coffee together for the billionth time on that past months or so. ‘I.. don’t think so.’ ‘WHAT? You must watch it. It’s the best romantic comedy ever made, I promise you. We have to watch it!’ Just the thought of such event happening made his heart skip a bit, for no reason at all, no reason; just two good friends watching a movie together, there was nothing to be nervous about, right? It may have taken three more months for him to fall in love, surely less than that but three more months for him to accept the fast-beating heart on his chest and the red cheeks whenever he thought about the other guy. After some movie and game nights, after number of book and film recommendations, after a couple of memories made together already, there was no way out of that feeling growing and invading his heart. ‘Now the question, my friend, is: when are you going to tell him?’ Namjoon told him as if it was nothing, just after Jungkook had opened his heart for him, expecting some kind of surprise. ‘A-Are you not even a little surprised?’ Namjoon chuckled a little, almost making fun of him through that irony. ‘Of course not.’ ‘What? W-Why- How?’ ‘I’m your best friend, Kookie. I know when you’re trying to hide something from yourself. And you can't hide your happiness whenever you are talking to this guy. That’s something, my friend, that’s something more than friendship.’ It did upset him how Namjoon could read him like that. He tried to be smooth but he could never fool him even if he tried. Maybe that was the result of years and years of friendship, as Namjoon said. That question filled his mind for days on end; how to, or what to, or even should he say something to Taehyung? The question was not ‘when’ but ‘if’. If he did it, would he be ending something that did so good in his life. He felt brighter and happier with the boy’s presence; he felt that if Taehyung got out of his life, it would all become gloomy and nebulous once again; the days repeating themselves, the hours not passing. How could he like someone that much? It was not really fair. His days felt complete because of that guy, of his beautiful smile and his passionate words. He had to say something, he had to maybe hint on something. He should ask him out and see what his reaction would be? If he freaked out, he could say he meant it as just friends and that he was just kidding about it being a date. ‘That’s an incredibly awful plan’ Jungkook though, lying on his bed, staring at the ceiling. It was already 2AM, and he certainly should be sleeping now. But his mind wouldn’t let him. The bright light on the phone screen along with a familiar bizz indicated then that he had received a message. At 2AM. ‘Why are you awake at 2AM, person?’. And there it was. The name that would not leave his mind painted on his phone screen. A message from Taehyung. Some messages. [2:03AM] Tae: I know it’s a bit too late but.. I just got to tell you this. I need this to be off my chest so I can sleep peacefully tonight. Even if you hate me in the morning for this.
[2:04AM] Tae: I.. well. I really like you. I mean, more than as a friend. I love being with you, I love talking to you, I think about you everyday, every second. I want to be with you or just talk to you all the time.
[2:06AM] Tae: It may be weird. I don’t know if you feel the same but.. I don’t know. If you can read my heart like this, please, text me back. Jungkook’s eyes widened as he stared blankly at the now black screen of his phone. How did they match so much that both of them were thinking about confessing at the same time. And Taehyung got the courage Jungkook couldn’t find on himself to just do it, he had to praise that mentally. Joy was what he felt reading that texts, but he chose not to answer for the night. The small walk to the coffee shop of every morning being too difficult to be made. Taehyung had not messaged him anymore since the text confession. Maybe Jungkook’s plan of talking that in person would fail since Taehyung was now thinking that he got rejected. But as he approached the store, seeing the boy’s brown soft hair at one of their frequent tables made his anxious feeling calm down just a tiny bit. A really tiny bit. ‘O-Oh hey, I- Well I’m sorry for that-’ Taehyung started to apologize, clearly thinking that he had messed up with their great friendship with his words. Jungkook interrupted him, a playful smile on his lips. ‘How could you confess to me through text? I thought I deserved roses at least.’ He opened his smile, facing a confused Taehyung. Trying to fake the fact that his heart was almost jumping out of his own chest. ‘And also, I was gonna do that first, you stole my chance.’ ‘W-what? But- You never answered me so I thought that..’ Taehyung chuckled, surprised, the red tone on his cheeks that matched the one that was also on Jungkook’s heated face. Jungkook grabbed his phone, hands a little shaky. He opened their conversation that carried the cute late night confession from Taehyung; something that he should really text back, since his feelings were the same. [9:24AM] You: So when is going to be our date?
