Work Text
“Izuku, I’m Home!” Mina called out into her apartment once inside. No response. Oh, silly me, he must still be out. Mina took off her shoes and entered the home she shared with the Number One Hero, walking to the living room and plopping herself in one of the chairs, opting to not even bother turning on the lights. Another day of saving the people, doing interviews, and being a pillar of society. All in a day’s work for the number 13 hero, Pinky. Mina was beat She wanted so bad to just sit there and let time go by without any interruption. But, today was a special day.Today was Valentine’s day. Mina smiled at the thought. She had made plans to cook for the love of her life, making him a big bowl of Katsudon for her and himself, before spending the night together cuddling and falling asleep watching bad romantic comedies. With her vision in mind, she sprung up from her seat and made her way to the kitchen. On the way, she passed by her dining room table, taking a glance at a gift she’d recently received from Izuku.A large bouquet of pink roses, sitting dormantly in a tall, turquoise vase. The clash of colors made Mina smile. He has no sense of decoration.Accompanying the roses and vase was a decorative card with a lacy design along the edges, with a short message in the middle, something Mina had kept to accompany the flowers.Happy Anniversary, Pinky!!-IzukuNow in her kitchen, Mina began cooking for her and her love’s dinner. As she cooked, Mina quietly hummed a little tune to herself, something that she’d remembered from her childhood. Humming, singing, she enjoyed it all, something she’d often done to past the time whenever she was either bored or was doing chores. She was grateful that Izuku’s favorite dish was rather simple to make.Mina smiled thinking about him. She loved him for all his quirks. From his persistent mumbling, his nervousness and blubbering when around her despite being together for a number of years, to his unwavering nerves on the battlefield, and his constant concern for the general public, always jumping into danger, for better or worse, even if it meant risking his own life. Despite nearly every one of his mentors, from All Might, to Gran Torino and many others telling him this would be his downfall, he never hesitated to jump into the fray, not wanting to lose a single person. That was how Mina had falling in love with him. He always wanted to save everybody, no matter how big the risk. She remembered noticing him very early in her time at U.A, despite his plain appearance and reserved nature. He seemed to almost radiate pureness whenever he went, lighting up even the darkest room with his presence alone. She remembered getting to know him better, even asking him out shortly after the end of their first term at U.A. They fell in love rather quickly, confessing to each other well before their first year concluded. Their dynamic was strange to some in their class, the plain-as-can-be quiet boy, and the loud, exaggerative pink-skinned girl, a rather striking contrast. But alas, all of their classmates welcomed the couple.Once the two had graduated, they moved in together in a small apartment just outside of Tokyo, wanting to stay close to the threat of villain attacks without being constantly pestered by city life. One of the things Izuku did to commemorate their new home was the gift of a small number of red and pink roses, used to decorate their kitchen.Izuku often purchased roses whenever they were in season, enjoying the splash of color they added to the otherwise plain apartment he and Mina shared. Mina could’ve sworn that pink had become his favorite color, too, something she liked to tease him about. But he’d really outdone himself for their 10-year anniversary, roughly two months ago, purchasing a bouquet nearly the size of Mina’s head, and just as pink. Mina remembered how happy she was that day, happy for the gift, and happy for the time she’d been able to spend with Izuku.Mina went to the table, two bowls of Katsudon in tow, setting up seats for both herself and for Izuku. She placed the bowls on opposite sides of the table, moving aside the vase so that she and Izuku could see each other as they ate. She sat herself down at the seat she’d set for herself, sitting silently as she waited for her love to walk thru the door. It was at least fifteen minutes before she began to grow worried. She began rhythmically tapping her fingers on the table. Surely, she thought to herself, she would’ve heard from him by now. Growing anxious, she pulled her phone from her pocket to see if maybe she’d missed a text from him. She quickly entered the messages application, searching for a message from Izuku. It was much further down than expected. She passed a number of odd messages from a number of her friends, some new and old.Denki: Are you ok? Plz respondYaomomo: Hope you’re doing alright. Call if you need anything.Eiji: Text me if need anything. Katsuki and I are here if you need anything. Ochako: Mina, I’m so sorry. What were they talking about? Did something happen?Mina eventually found Izuku’s name in the app, but, to her shock, the most recent text came from around three weeks ago. Mina grew more anxious, her hands shaking as she held the phone and read, the text, the last thing Izuku had sent her.Something came up, I’ll be home soon. I love you. ~IzukuTears started to form in the corners of Mina’s eyes. Her eyes began to dart around the apartment, asking herself what the hell was happening. Slowly, the illusion she’d created for herself began to crumble.Dirty dishes towered in her sink.A thin layer of dust caking every surface in the room. Piles of laundry, both clean and dirty, strewn across the floor.Despite her tears beginning to trickle down her face, Mina tried her best to put on a smile. No, No, No. It can’t be, she told herself.I mean, Izu just bought me these roses, there’s no way th- Mina’s last shred of hope, along with her smile, was destroyed as she glanced at the vase.Every single rose, whittled and devoid of the bright, cheerful color they once held. White and brown, only a tinge of pink along the edges of the petals. The most notable aspect, a single pink petal, seemingly free of Father Time’s power, which broke off and fell silently to the table. To Mina, that petal was anything but quiet, her heart sinking as it fell. Mina let out a cry of anguish and broke down, burying her face in arms as she cried, painfully reminded of how lonely she now was.The one thing that made her home a home was gone. And the roses reminded her of that.
