darkness was all yoongi could see when his eyes were shut, the dizzying pitch black causing his world to spin.

he tried to concentrate on the sensations around him.

his eyelashes rested on his cheeks under his closed eyes.

the soft give of the memory foam mattress underneath him.

the thick blanket cloaking him in warmth and softness from head to toe, yet he still felt cold.

he opened his eyes, still seeing only blackness before slowly bringing his head above the mass of duvet cover.

his bedroom was still dark, the only light coming from the open window behind him he decided to leave the window open that night, knowing that fresh air was said to make you sleep better. but now he regretted it, seeing that it didn’t help a thing.

despite his back was towards the window, yoongi knew that it was a cloudless night, only the moon and the stars hanging in the inky blue sky. a beam from the lamp post next to his bedroom window streamed through the gap in the lazily drawn curtains on to the pillow next to him.

it bathed the sleeping head rested on the pillow in a soft yellow light, the teeth between the slightly parted lips glinting and rich brown hair glowing softly gold. it was jungkook, and yoongi knew that of course, but he always looked different when he slept. a noticeable feature of his were his big and excited doe eyes, but now that they were shut, long eyelashes fanning over smooth skin, he looked more peaceful. yoongi watched him for a second, only hearing the faint ticks from the clock on the wall that read 4 am and the soft wind ruffling the curtains at the window. jungkook was sleeping on his side, his arms splayed out and empty from when yoongi was curled up in them. he had moved when he had gotten up to go to the bathroom, but he didn’t to disturb jungkook by clambering back into him. so he let him sleep, instead holding one of his outstretched fingers.

he was surprised the light hitting jungkook’s face didn’t wake him up, then again, not many things could. and that was something yoongi envied.

jungkook could fall asleep anywhere, no matter how bright, loud or disruptive. in bed, whilst yoongi lay awake for hours just waiting for exhaustion to finally take over his body, jungkook had drifted into unconsciousness in a matter of seconds. yoongi didn’t like calling what he had ‘insomnia’, knowing that many others hand a worse case than him. it was more that he couldn’t keep up with his own thoughts that spun round and round his head as soon as it hit the pillow, causing him to jolt into alertness no matter how tired he was. the prospect of sleeping was so anticipated that it frequently didn’t arrive until late in the night, yoongi’s eyes slowly shutting as dawn began to break. he was just thankful that he could sleep eventually. whether it was insomnia or something else, yoongi knew that sleeping wasn’t easy.

jungkook would hold him until he himself fell asleep, leaving yoongi alone in the bedroom with jungkook far away from him. but jungkook’s breath on his neck and hands clasped around his stomach brought him comfort, the heartbeat pressed against his back eventually lulling him to sleep on some nights.

yoongi traced the nail of the finger clasped in his hand, his breath stuttering when jungkook’s eyes slowly fluttered open.

jungkook blinked groggily, squinting his eyes as they focused on yoongi’s face that was tucked half into the pillow next to him. his face was slightly shaded as the light came from behind him, creating a small halo of light around his black hair that stuck up from tossing and turning. but he could make out yoongi’s features and the dark circles rested under his eyes. he sighed, bringing his free hand up to yoongi’s face and running the tips of his fingers up his cheek bone to his hair, smoothing down the bed head.

“can’t sleep?”

his voice was rough from waking up, a slightly deeper pitch than it normally was.

yoongi only shook his head.

jungkook nodded, running his fingers through yoongi’s hair once more before stretching slightly, pulling the covers off himself and hauling himself of the bed with a quiet yawn. yoongi watched him with his face pressed into the pillow as he watched jungkook go over to the wardrobe, pulling out two large hoodies and two pairs of slippers. he then wandered over to the bed and slipped his black hoodie on, helping yoongi to sit up as he handed him one of his other hoodies, this time in red.

“come on,” he muttered with a tired smile as yoongi pulled the soft material over his head, “put on your slippers, we are going for a walk.”

yoongi allowed himself to get gently pulled along by the hand through the house and out the front door into the silent street. he was only wearing light blue bunny slippers on his feet, jungkook having similar, but he didn’t care as he was led into the cool night air. jungkook sensed the slightly chilly breeze, pulling both his and yoongi’s hood up around their heads to keep them warm.

they clasped each other’s hands as they walked down the street, their surroundings being washed in nothing but silvery moonlight and golden streetlamps. their footsteps barely made a sound as they walked aimlessly, their shadows, one big and one small, rising and falling with every step.

yoongi brought his other hand up to hold onto jungkook’s arm for additional support, not wanting to fall over in his zombie like state. jungkook smiled as he felt fingers curl into his sleeve, squeezing the hand in his.

“what were you thinking about in bed?” he spoke into the quiet of the night, the only other sound being the occasional car down the main road a little while off.

yoongi shrugged, leaning his head on jungkook’s shoulder as he walked.

“too many things…”

jungkook nodded, feeling yoongi’s hair soft against his cheek. he didn’t know what else to do to help yoongi, he tried everything. he knew something he did helped like rubbing his back in slow circles or combing his fingers across his hair. but there was only so much he could do, and that hurt him. but that wasn’t yoongi’s fault, and he knew that just being there made yoongi rest easier. and he was getting better slowly but surely. he was on medication that was making things better by the day, but they weren’t quite there yet.

“talk to me about something.” yoongi muttered quietly into jungkook’s arm.

“what do you want me to talk about?”

“anything,” yoongi’s eyes raising upwards to the moon that hung high in the night sky, “tell me about the moon.”

jungkook looked up to the moon, the bright, silver light stinging his tired eyes. his pupils traced the outline of every deep crater, remembering an indian fairytale his mother told him when he was young and couldn’t sleep.

“look up at the moon, yoongi,” jungkook whispered, feeling yoongi’s head lift slightly upwards, “look at the holes and the texture near the bottom. there are ears, and legs and a tail. it’s a rabbit.”

“what do you mean?” yoongi’s walking had slowed slightly, finding it hard to concentrate on walking and looking at the same time.

“in india there was a huge and beautiful forest,” jungkook began, turning down a path that led to a small green sheltered in evergreen trees, dappling the silver moonlight, “it was full of all the trees and fruit you could imagine. bright fruits and sweet flowers bursted on every branch, filling the forest with life and colour as animals swung through the trees. four animals in particular were friends, an otter, an elephant, a monkey and a rabbit.”

jungkook felt yoongi chuckle, a giggle fizzing from his lips.

“mmm… ok. weird but ok.”

“well,” jungkook continued, gazing at what he could see of the moon through the dark leaves, “the thing was that everybody loved the rabbit. she was kind, and generous and loyal. she told the best stories. all the animals were inspired by her to become better. until one day a poor man came into the forest begging for food. and despite all their efforts, none of the animals were willing to sacrifice themselves to be eaten.”

“what has this got to do with the moon?”

“when it became the rabbit’s turn,” jungkook’s eyes crinkled into a smile as he finally caught a whole glimpse of the full moon, “she offered to sacrifice herself to be eaten by the man, and she threw herself into a burning fire. but before any of her soft, grey fur was burnt or singed, she felt a large hand close around her and pull her out. it was the safest she had ever felt. she looked up and saw the huge face of the great spirit staring back at her with a soft smile. he stood up, leaving his beggar disguise behind him as he reached up into the night sky that had faded from blue to pink to black, decorated with gems of stars. he reached all the way up to the moon, setting the rabbit down in its cool silver. he told her that her selfless deed must be spread to all corners of the globe for all to see and learn. every full moon, the earth is bathed in silvery kindness as the rabbit watches down on humanity, hoping they will do the same as her.”

as jungkook drew his story to a close, he felt heaviness on his shoulder, yoongi’s grip faltering. he smiled as he turned around, hauling the barely conscious yoongi onto his back as he wandered back home, a pair of arms hung limply around his neck.

yoongi thankfully didn’t wake up as he was tucked carefully into bed, pulled close to jungkook’s chest. jungkook pressed a small kiss to his forehead that was tucked into his chest, sheltered from the light of the street lamp. he gazed at the moon that had began to lower in the sky as dawn started to break, his own eyes closing as he breathed to yoongi’s heartbeat.
