The moonlight filtered through the dense trees of the Cyrodiil forest as Rocky padded silently beside Lucien Lachance. The Khajiit’s sharp eyes pierced the gloom, her tail flicking behind her with restless energy. Despite the weight of the mission, her heart quickened in his presence. Lucien’s face was a mask of calm determination, but she knew him well enough to sense the turmoil beneath. His life, their love, both rested on the razor's edge tonight."We must move quickly," Lucien murmured, his voice low and smooth, barely audible above the rustling leaves. "The dead drops have already been compromised. I fear we have little time before the others begin to act."Rocky nodded, her mind racing as they neared the hidden cave where they hoped to find answers. The dead drops—the secretive method the Dark Brotherhood used to communicate with their assassins—had been compromised. Someone was impersonating Lucien, and the orders they were delivering weren’t just false—they were deadly. It was only a matter of time before Lucien himself became the next target.Rocky’s claws flexed in her gauntlets. "This one will not let that happen," she hissed softly, her voice carrying the distinct cadence of her people. "Whoever is behind this treachery will regret crossing us."Lucien’s gaze flicked to her, the faintest hint of a smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "I know you won’t, my love. But we must tread carefully. Bellamont has covered his tracks well."Mathieu Bellamont—the name sent a ripple of anger through Rocky. A fellow brother, a man they had trusted. He had harbored a vendetta against the Brotherhood for years, plotting to destroy it from within. And now, it seemed, he was ready to strike by using the dead drops to turn the Brotherhood against Lucien. They entered the cave, their footsteps silent on the stone floor. Inside, the air was cool, damp, and heavy with the scent of moss and decay. Rocky’s sharp ears caught the faintest sound of movement ahead, and she signaled to Lucien, who nodded and moved into the shadows with practiced ease.In the far corner of the cave, a figure crouched over a chest. Bellamont. His fingers moved swiftly as he sorted through the letters, oblivious to their presence. Rocky felt a surge of adrenaline. This was their chance. With a graceful leap, she closed the distance between them, her dagger flashing in the dim light as she pressed it to Bellamont’s throat. Lucien stepped forward, his voice cold as ice."Bellamont," he said. "I had hoped it wasn’t you."Bellamont froze, his eyes widening in shock before he regained his composure. "Lachance," he sneered. "I should have known you’d find me. But it’s too late. The wheels are already in motion. The Brotherhood will turn against you, and when they do, I’ll be the one to restore the true order."Rocky’s grip tightened on her blade, her golden eyes narrowing. "You underestimate us," she growled. "This one will see to it that you pay for your betrayal."Bellamont laughed, a hollow sound that echoed off the stone walls. "You think you can stop it? The Black Hand already suspects him, and once the others know…"Lucien stepped closer, his gaze locked on Bellamont. "I know what you’ve done, Mathieu. But you will not succeed. I’ve been in the Brotherhood longer than you can imagine. I know how to survive.""Perhaps," Bellamont spat. "But you can’t kill me without proving me right."Rocky’s pulse quickened, her mind racing for a solution. Killing Bellamont here, without witnesses, would only serve to deepen the suspicion against Lucien. But if they could expose him to the Black Hand, show them the evidence of his treachery…"Lucien," she whispered, her voice soft but urgent. "We need proof. The others will not believe us without it."Lucien nodded, his eyes still on Bellamont. "You’re right."Rocky’s mind whirled. There had to be something they could use—something in the letters, the false orders, perhaps even in Bellamont’s own words. She scanned the cave, her keen eyes settling on a set of parchments near the chest."Hold him," she said to Lucien as she moved to examine the letters. Her sharp claws sifted through the papers, quickly finding what she was looking for—correspondence in Bellamont’s handwriting. False orders, carefully crafted to mimic Lucien’s style, but with enough discrepancies to raise questions."This will be enough," she said, holding the letters up to Lucien. "We can present these to the Black Hand. They will see the truth."Bellamont snarled, struggling against Lucien’s grip, but it was futile. "You can’t stop this!" he cried. "The Brotherhood is already broken!"Lucien’s voice was low, dangerous. "The Brotherhood will endure, as it always has. But you, Bellamont, will not."Rocky stepped forward, her dagger gleaming in the dim light. "This one will see to it that your fate is sealed, traitor. For the Brotherhood, and for Lucien."As they bound Bellamont and prepared to leave the cave, Rocky felt Lucien’s hand brush against hers, a silent promise between them. The road ahead would be dangerous, but together, they would face whatever came. The Brotherhood was their family, but their love—secret and forbidden—was their strength.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

The sanctuary was quiet, too quiet. The flickering torchlight cast long shadows against the cold stone walls, but there was no life here anymore—only the lingering scent of death. Rocky stood in the center of the sanctuary, her golden eyes scanning the emptiness, her heart heavy with the weight of what had been done. The cleansing was complete, as Lucien had ordered, and the Brotherhood was in ashes. Only one had been spared.Vicente Valtieri. The vampire had been a loyal member, and Rocky could not bring herself to strike him down. Instead, she had sent him into hiding, trusting that his centuries of experience and cunning would keep him safe. Now, standing in the ruins of what had once been her family, she was alone. But the Dark Brotherhood was not gone—not yet. It was up to her to rebuild, to find those worthy of joining their ranks, to restore the order to its former glory. She would begin tonight. The cool night air greeted her as she stepped out of the sanctuary, pulling her hood over her head. She had spent weeks watching, observing those who moved in the shadows, those who lived outside the bounds of law and society. There were whispers of skilled assassins and cutthroats scattered throughout Cyrodiil—individuals who might be persuaded to join the Dark Brotherhood. Her first target was a Khajiit thief named J’Zargo, a master of stealth and illusion magic who operated out of the Imperial City. He had a reputation for being elusive, always a step ahead of the guards, always disappearing into the night like a shadow. It was said that J’Zargo had never been caught—not once.Rocky had tracked him to a run-down tavern in the Waterfront District, a place where the underbelly of the city gathered to drink away their sins. She entered quietly, her eyes scanning the dimly lit room, until she spotted him—a lithe, black-furred Khajiit sitting alone in the corner, his eyes darting around the room as if he expected danger at any moment.Perfect.With a grace born from years of training, Rocky approached his table, her movements silent as she slipped into the chair across from him. J’Zargo’s eyes narrowed as he studied her, his hand moving instinctively to the dagger at his side.“Who are you?” he hissed, his tail twitching in irritation.Rocky smiled beneath her hood. “I am someone who knows your talents, J’Zargo. Someone who can offer you a new life—one filled with purpose and power.”The thief’s eyes flickered with interest, but he didn’t let his guard down. “What makes you think J’Zargo is interested in your offer?”She leaned forward, her voice dropping to a whisper. “Because I am part of a family that values skill and stealth above all else. A family that rewards those who are loyal—and ruthless. I come from the Dark Brotherhood, and we are looking for someone like you.”J’Zargo’s eyes widened slightly at the mention of the Brotherhood, but he quickly masked his surprise. “The Dark Brotherhood? This one thought they were gone. Rumors say they were wiped out.”Rocky’s expression darkened. “There has been a... cleansing. But the Brotherhood is far from dead. We are rebuilding, and I need people I can trust. People who know how to kill without question, without remorse.”J’Zargo considered her words for a moment before nodding slowly. “J’Zargo is interested. But he will not join without knowing what is expected of him.”Rocky reached into her cloak and pulled out a black handprint, the symbol of the Dark Brotherhood, etched onto a small piece of parchment. She slid it across the table to him.“Follow this. Complete the contract I give you, and you will have proven your worth. Fail, and you will never hear from me again.”J’Zargo studied the parchment for a long moment before tucking it into his belt. “J’Zargo accepts. Where does this one begin?”Rocky smiled, standing up and pulling her hood further over her face. “Meet me at the abandoned house in Cheydinhal when the job is done. The details are written on the back of the parchment.”Without another word, she turned and melted into the crowd, leaving J’Zargo to contemplate his fate. The second name on Rocky’s list was an Imperial woman named Arquen, a former mercenary turned bounty hunter. Arquen was known for her cold, calculating demeanor and her expertise with poisons. She had no loyalty to anyone but herself, which made her a perfect candidate for the Brotherhood.Rocky found her in the wilderness outside Bruma, tracking a bounty. The woman was as fierce and deadly as the rumors had said, her bow slung across her back and a belt full of vials at her waist. Rocky had watched her for days, admiring her efficiency in eliminating her targets, and now it was time to make contact.“Arquen,” Rocky called as she stepped out from the trees, her voice low but carrying enough authority to stop the woman in her tracks.Arquen turned, her hand immediately going to the hilt of her dagger. “Who are you, and why are you following me?”“I am from the Dark Brotherhood,” Rocky said simply, stepping closer. “And I’m here to offer you a place in our ranks.”Arquen’s eyes narrowed, but she didn’t draw her blade. “The Dark Brotherhood? What could you possibly offer me that I don’t already have?”“Power,” Rocky replied, her voice smooth. “Purpose. And the chance to belong to something greater than yourself. The Dark Brotherhood may have been weakened, but we will rise again—and we need skilled killers like you.”Arquen tilted her head, her sharp eyes appraising Rocky. “And if I refuse?”Rocky’s hand rested lightly on her dagger. “Then you’ll walk away, and we’ll never speak again. But I don’t think you’ll refuse. You strike me as someone who enjoys a challenge, and there is no greater challenge than becoming one of us.”A slow smile spread across Arquen’s lips. “You’re right. I do enjoy a challenge. Tell me what I need to do.”Rocky handed her a similar piece of parchment, the black handprint staring up at Arquen from the paper. “Complete this contract, and you will be one of us. Fail, and you will never hear from me again.”Arquen nodded, her smile fading as she slipped the parchment into her belt. “I’ll see you in Cheydinhal.”By the end of the night, Rocky had recruited the beginnings of a new family. The Dark Brotherhood was still fragile, still teetering on the edge of destruction, but she had faith. With J’Zargo, Arquen, and the others she had yet to contact, the Brotherhood would rise again.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

The cold air of the Cheydinhal sanctuary was thick with tension as Rocky stood before her new recruits. The torches flickered along the stone walls, casting long shadows across the room. J'Zargo and Arquen, along with two others—silent and eager—stood in a half-circle, their eyes locked on Rocky. Each of them had proven themselves worthy of the Dark Brotherhood, completing the contracts she'd given them. Now, they were here to take their final steps, to swear their loyalty to the Brotherhood’s ancient laws.Rocky’s eyes, sharp and golden, swept over the gathered assassins. Her tail flicked behind her in a slow, deliberate motion, a sign of her focus. She stood tall, her voice steady but commanding.“You stand here because you have been chosen,” she began, her tone low and reverberating through the silence. “You have killed in our name. But before you can call yourselves true Brothers and Sisters, you must understand what binds us together.”Rocky stepped forward, her hood casting a shadow over her feline features. “The Dark Brotherhood lives by five sacred laws. These are not suggestions. They are the Tenets—the foundation of who we are. Break them, and you will meet the wrath of the Dread Father himself.”She paused, letting the weight of her words sink in."The Five Tenets."She raised her hand, counting each one on her fingers as she spoke:“First: Never disobey or refuse to carry out the orders of a superior. In this family, you follow the chain of command without question. Your orders come from the top, and they are carried out, without hesitation.”“Second: Never steal the possessions of another Brother or Sister. We are bound by trust, and theft among us weakens that bond. We must trust each other with our lives.”“Third: Never kill a fellow Brother or Sister. We do not spill each other's blood. Our blades are meant for outsiders, never for family.”“Fourth: Never betray the Dark Brotherhood or its secrets. We are shadows. We live in the dark, and we take our secrets to the grave. Betrayal is the gravest sin.”The room was silent. Rocky’s voice was softer now but no less intense. “And the Fifth Tenet: Never dishonor the Night Mother or the Dread Father. They watch over us, guide us. Our existence is for them, and them alone.”Rocky let her gaze linger on each of the new recruits, watching as they absorbed the gravity of the Tenets. J’Zargo’s ears flicked as he processed the words, and Arquen’s cold, calculating expression remained unreadable, but there was a glimmer of understanding in her eyes.“Fail to live by these Tenets, and you will face a punishment worse than death.”She stepped back, allowing her words to settle before continuing. “Now, the ranks of the Brotherhood. You will start at the bottom, as all must. Each contract, each life you take, will move you higher through our ranks.”She raised her chin, her voice filled with purpose. “Murderer. Slayer. Eliminator. Executioner. Silencer. These are the ranks you will rise through, should you prove your worth. Above all of you are the Speakers—those who communicate directly with the Night Mother.”Rocky’s voice dropped to a more intimate tone. “And above even them is the Listener—the one who hears the Night Mother’s whispers directly, who receives her sacred commands. That title belongs to me.”The new members exchanged glances, understanding that they now answered to someone touched by the Night Mother herself.“But you will also answer to another,” Rocky said, her voice shifting to a solemn tone. “Lucien Lachance is the Speaker of this sanctuary. His word is law, and you will treat him with the same respect you give to the Night Mother.”Rocky watched the new recruits carefully. Lucien’s name carried weight in the Brotherhood, and it was clear by their reactions that they understood the gravity of serving under someone like him.“And now, you must understand who we serve,” she said, her voice quiet yet firm. “We do not kill for pleasure alone, nor for gold, though it is often a reward. We kill for the Night Mother, and through her, we serve the Dread Father, Sithis.”She stepped forward again, her golden eyes gleaming in the dim light. “Sithis is the void, the embodiment of emptiness and chaos. He is the darkness before creation, the nothing from which everything comes. To serve Sithis is to embrace death, to understand that we are the instruments of that void. Our blades, our spells, our hands—they are his will.”Rocky felt the weight of her own words, as she always did when she spoke of Sithis. The void was both terrifying and liberating, a force that she had sworn her life to.“The Night Mother is his bride, and it is through her that we receive our contracts,” she continued. “When someone seeks our services, they perform the Black Sacrament. They kneel before an effigy made from bones, nightshade, and a heart, chanting the words: ‘Sweet Mother, Sweet Mother, send your child unto me, for the sins of the unworthy must be baptized in blood and fear.’”Rocky let the chilling phrase hang in the air for a moment before continuing. “The Night Mother hears these prayers, and she whispers the name of the intended target to the Listener—me. From there, I give the orders to the Speaker, and the contracts are sent out. That is how the Dark Brotherhood operates.”She let her words sink in before turning to the wooden chest behind her. With deliberate slowness, she opened the lid and retrieved four sets of armor, each one shimmering in the torchlight.“Now,” she said, stepping forward, “you will receive the armor of our order. This is your shrouded armor, crafted for stealth and protection. It is marked with the color of death—purple, the hue of twilight, when life fades into darkness.”She handed the sets of armor to each recruit, watching as they accepted the Brotherhood’s uniform with reverence. J’Zargo’s paws ran over the fabric with interest, and Arquen inspected hers closely, her fingers brushing over the intricate designs sewn into the cloth.Rocky stepped back, watching them. “From this day forward, you are no longer just thieves, mercenaries, or wanderers. You are the Dark Brotherhood. You will serve the Night Mother and Sithis, and you will carry out their will without question.”Her voice dropped to a whisper, but it carried the weight of an oath. “Welcome to the shadows, Brothers and Sisters. Embrace the void. For death is only the beginning.”As the recruits donned their shrouded armor, the room seemed to grow colder, darker. The Black Hand had risen again, and under Rocky’s leadership, the Dark Brotherhood would once more thrive in the blood-soaked shadows of Tamriel.
