Day 2: Soulmates  In a world where you can’t see color until you meet and have touched your soulmate, “the one” you’re destined to spend your life with, you’d think that love would come more easily. That there’d be less broken hurts and bad decisions, less trial and error. But it wasn’t. Some people searched there entire lives, and never found theirs. Others resented the idea that they’d have to be with someone who they felt like that’d had no choice in, and never tried to find theirs, wearing long sleeves and gloves to avoid touching anyone they didn’t know. Some people met their soulmate, watched their world bloom into color, and realized that they didn’t like their soulmate, let alone love them. As a child, then as a teenager, and even as a young adult, still bright eyed and filled with hope, Toshinori Yagi wanted more then anything to find his soulmate. He shook or clasped the hands of nearly everyone met, and introduced himself to every stranger he saw. But now, at 45, his quirk fading more every day, barely able to hold on too his large form for longer then a few hours, he hesitated. He shied away from the touch of strangers on the subway, and added gloves to his hero costume. It was too dangerous. Being the number one hero painted a target on your back, and the backs of you’re loved ones, And like this, he wasn’t sure if he’d be able to protect even himself for very much longer, let alone someone else. Besides, with the fight with All For One still haunting his dreams and waking him up sweating and coughing blood every night, and the near skeletal form that was slowly becoming his new normal, Toshinori wasn’t sure what he’d be able to offer to a soulmate anyways.   He wasn’t thinking about any of this at the moment though, half his uniform ripped and torn from a surprisingly intense fight with a villain who couldn’t have been older the 17 , and who possessed some kind of rock based quirk. As the police led the villain away into a cop car (villain? Barely even an adult, he’d have to look in to where he’d end up later, see if he could help) he took in the other hero standing across from him. Endeavour. He’d only worked with the man a few times over the many years they’d both been in the hero scene, the other man usually preferring to work alone. During the times they had met, Toshinori always got the impression that the other man didn’t really like him. He always seemed tense, and Toshinori had turned to see the other man glaring at him more times then what seemed socially acceptable considering the total amount of time they’d been in the same place. Toshinori felt the by now familiar pull in his stomach, and knew that he should leave soon, least he end up transforming in the middle of the street. Toshinori turned until he was facing the other man, and pasted on his brightest smile. He strode forward, acting completely oblivious to how the other hero grew ever tenser, hands balling into fists, and one eye almost twitching. “Kill them with kindness, as the Americans say” Toshinori thought to himself. “It was great to work with you again, my man!” He boomed, hand outstretched. Currently, soulmates were the furthest thing from his mind, despite his shedded gloves and normally not bare hand. Despite the fact that they met handfuls of times and but had never had reason to touch beyond gloved handshakes. The idea that Endeavour could be his soulmate would have seemed laughable this morning. But it was anything but funny when Toshinori grabbed the other man’s hand and everything around them slammed into color, a sharp contrast from the slow blooming he’d heard described in stories, so violent he dropped the other man’s hand as if burned, and Endeavour took a step back. Later, he’d wonder if it happened like this for more people, and the moment was just sweetened for the movies, or if the man across from him caused it just based on the sheer intensity of his personality, but right now, as he started back at the other man’s shocked eyes (was that what blue looked like?) and dropped open mouth, knowing his own face probably looked the same, there was only one thought in his mind.
Shit.
