Dark clouds blanketed the night sky concealing stars and crescent moon alike. Through the clouds, rain poured like bullets onto the streets of Lowtown. A few unlucky souls caught in the downpour jogged down the streets, jackets pulled up over their heads. Marian Hawke chose otherwise. A few passerbyers gave her a second glance as she strolled by, face tilted back to greet the rain and a smile hinting at the edges of her full mouth. She appeared unaware of the slight chill in the air, no doubt risking a cold, and radiated a sense of misplaced elation. In truth, the rain reminded her of better times. Of Ferelden, warm fires, and the deep timber of her father.Sighing, Marian ran a pale hand through her soaked hair, pushing the auburn locks out of her face. The Hanged Man was just up ahead, its red neon sign a beacon in the dark. In the past, Marian had always found the slightly crooked sign to be an eyesore but over time it became another enduring quality of Lowtown’s most notorious bar. The building’s chipped brick exterior and tinted windows only added to the establishment’s drab decor. But yet, inside it was a welcoming establishment, if not questionable, much like its owner Varric Tethras. After fleeing the Blight in Ferelden and coming to Kirkwall, Marian had been desperate for work. Varric was the first person to hire her to bartend night shifts and the two became fast friends. Eventually Marian, who at the time was a journalist student, discovered Varric also owned the controversial editorial Thedas Geographic. It featured editorials, sometimes over the span of many editions, regaling events around Thedas. At times the topics could be considered “hot button” issues like the several stories on mage rights or the series of anecdotes from elven prostitutes; too oppressed to find work elsewhere. It had been Marian’s dream to one day write for the magazine. When Varric revealed he was actually ‘Bianca’ the mysterious head writer and publisher she spent the next several months getting over a slight case of hero worship. Now a graduate from Kirkwall University and a rising star in the journalism world, Marian’s dream had come true and her articles were some of the magazine’s best. Occasionally, like this night, Varric would summon her to the Hanged Man at odd hours in order to go over a high profile story. The last time was a deep look into the mage underground, complete with prolific photographs featuring blurred out faces of the rebellion leaders. Anders, their close friend, was one of the main features and through the numerous interviews he was now like family. Whatever story Varric had in store for her had to be at least on par with that one. It was the only reason he would be so vague on the phone. Marian avoided the front doors of the bar and instead slid into the side alley towards the back door. She fished out the key Varric had given her and easily slipped inside the back room. The warmth of the Hanged Man greeted her along with distant murmurs from patrons and the smell of alcohol mixed with sweat. The place was normally overwhelmingly boisterous but with the rain not many bar goers wanted to venture out. Leaving small puddles in her wake, Marian skirted past the kitchen to avoid Nora’s disapproving scowl and made her way towards the staircase leading to Varric’s suite. As she turned the corner she stopped so suddenly her wet boots nearly slid out from under her. Varric awaited her on the first steps, lounging lazily with a mug of whiskey in his hand. The dwarf was dressed as always- a burgundy, deep cut shirt which showed off his ample chest hair and a pair of nearly flamboyant trousers. His hazel eyes seemed to smile at her while he peered over his mug, raised in mid-sip. Marian smirked back before plopping down next to her friend. Her jeans instantly created a tiny puddle. She tugged playfully at Varric’s short ponytail, nearly pulling some lightly hued strands loose, “So what’s the emergency?” Varric swatted her hand away half heartedly, “Not an emergency Hawke, more of an once in a lifetime opportunity. How would you feel about pissing off the whole of the Tevinter Imperium?” Marian’s silver eyes widened slightly, “And how or why would I do that…don’t leave me in suspense Varric.” “Sitting up in my suite is our ticket to the next biggest story.” Varric continued motioning his free hand in a dramatic flare, “His name is Fenris. Came across me through one of my contacts-a jumpy fellow named Anso. Point being, the broody bastard is an escaped slave from Tevinter. He's been on the run from his former master for nearly three years and...Hawke...he’s willing to spill all of the Imperium’s dirty secrets. He’ll be anonymous of course and in exchange we have to make him a legal citizen. I already have my guys working on getting him fake identification. But, this is it Hawke. The story we’ve been waiting for… and I want you to write it.” Marian leaned back against the stairs, mind whirling. The Tevinter Imperium was almost impossible to get inside information on. The border control was nearly impenetrable and the magisters who called it home held no desire to share their secrets. Despite this, it was common knowledge that mages ruled free with blood magic and slavery remained the backbone of its economy. Elves, the Imperium’s preferred enslaved race, had attempted to flee in the past. Most were hunted down before reaching free land by Tevinter bounty hunters. The few who did make it tended to become easy marks and were either sold back to the Imperium or killed for their profitable bounty within months. It was a problem and one often swept under the rug for fear of angering the elite magisters. To have access to actual information on the inner workings would change everything but sharing it could prove fatal to those involved. A strange grin spread across Marian’s face, “You said his name was Fenris? I want to meet him.” If he was surprised, Varric gave no hint of it. Instead, the dwarf tipped his glass back and swallowed down the last few dregs of amber liquid. He set the now empty mug down on the steps and pushed himself up to his feet, “Somehow I knew you would say that Hawke. I’d say you were getting predictable but then you’ll go and do something to prove me wrong.”  Shaking her head, Hawke began to climb up the stairs with Varric trailing behind her, “It’s almost as if you know me.” When she reached out to grab the doorknob of Varric’s suite the dwarf stayed her hand, “One last thing...the elf isn’t the easiest fellow to get along with so you might want to watch that mouth of yours.” Marian raised a single brow, “Right, because your’s is so much better.” “You wound me.” Letting out a soft snort, Marian eased the door open. Varric’s suite was situated in such a way that the first room was like a lounge area. A large table with high back chairs dominated the room along with a lit fireplace. Many games of Wicked Grace among Marian’s closest friends had taken place around that table. At this moment the very elf Varric had been describing sat at the head of the table. With their entrance, he looked up from the untouched mug of what Marian assumed was Varric's favorite whiskey. Like most elves he was lean but there was no hiding the hard muscle beneath the dark jacket and shirt he wore. A mop of shaggy, white hair contrasted against olive toned skin and fell into impossibly, large moss green eyes. His eyes were so distracting it took Marian a moment to notice the white, three pronged tattoo that started beneath Fenris’ bottom lip and traveled down his throat like a vine. It disappeared beneath the neckline of his shirt and similar tattoos graced the bared skin of his arms and hands. Elves were always known for holding a sort of unearthly beauty and Fenris was the epitome of such claims.“You must be Fenris.” Marian started not bothering to waste time, “I’m Hawke, one of Varric’s closest friends and one of his head writers. You could say the best. He told me about your situation.” When Fenris didn’t respond Marian took a seat opposite of him. His wide green eyes bored into hers like hardened malachite. She could feel him actively assessing her, deciding if she was a threat or an ally. It was something she was use to client’s doing however the sheer intensity of Fenris’ gaze made her skin feel too tight and her spine stiffen. She forced herself to meet his gaze with a cheeky grin. He blinked, once, twice and then shifted his gaze back to his still full glass. “And? ” His voice was not what Marian would have expected. With a deep timber and the slightest hint of an accent it was easily pleasing to the ears. Paired with his looks, the combination was anything but fair. “And I want to help you” she answered with a shrug.Fenris’ eyes flashed, “I do not want your pity.” “It’s not pity”, Marian mumbled while fishing out a pack of damp cigarettes, “I’m getting something in return, right? I don’t know what information you exactly have but anything about the Imperium is rare here. Getting to write about it will put me years ahead in my career.”“I was told as much.” Fenris confirmed eyes fixed on the unlit cigarette between Marian’s lips. He watched her hands as she dug into her coat pocket for her lighter and his shoulders seemed to relax as she flicked the spark wheel and ignited the flame. Why? What was he watching for?  “I told the dwarf I would answer whatever questions you had within reason and anonymity.”
“Of course” Marian stated, taking a long drag of her cigarette, “You want a smoke?” Fenris hesitated before shaking his head, “Where do we proceed from here? Dwarf?” At this point Varric had already taken his spot next to Marian, “I’ll have a contract written up regarding everything you and I agreed on earlier. You can read it over, sign it, and my guys should have your new identity set up within a few weeks. You could petition for asylum but the process is...well shitty and there is no guarantee you’d be allowed to stay in Kirkwall. While we get your alias, I have a few safe-houses setup for high profile clients such as yourself so you can stay at one of those. You’ll have to try and lay low if we’re going to pull this off especially since you’re not exactly...inconspicuous.” ‘Speaking of which” Marian interrupted a trail of smoke escaping between her lips, “We could work on that. I mean the hair you have going on right now is very ‘look at me’...but with a little dye that problem could be solved.” “You think I have not thought of such measures? I am an escaped slave on the run from the Tevinter Imperium. I am more than aware that I ‘stand out’.” Fenris growled, “Hair dye does not work. Perhaps it is these markings; I am not sure.” Marian’s eyes traced over the exposed patterns on his skin once more, “There’s a story there. Care to tell?” Fenris’ sloped shoulders tensed before he let out the smallest sigh of defeat, “You will find out soon enough”, he spat, “ These markings are pure lyrium. My previous master, Danarius, carved them into my flesh as an experiment, such is the way of the magisters.” He was holding back. Marian could see it in the clipped tone of his words and the slight flicker of hesitance in his eyes. Oh, he was good, of course. She had no doubt he needed to be able to keep his secrets close to his chest but Marian always had a way with picking out what others did not want her to see. She would let it go for now but soon Fenris would tell her everything. She leaned causally back in her chair, “Sounds painful.” Varric groaned and palmed his face, “Nice, Hawke.” “Yes, I would endeavor to say the slow torture of having lyrium burned into your flesh is painful” Fenris snarled sarcastically. It made his features twist into something ugly, a feat Marian would not have thought possible. A flicker of guilt wormed its way into her gut but she quickly snuffed it out. “So for the time being should we get Fenris here set up in the safe-house? Personally, I think we could all do with a good night’s sleep.” Varric nodded, “The safe-house I have in mind is not far. There’s the car in the lot across the street or if you prefer you could always walk. Hawke here doesn’t mind the rain but well...some of us are a bit more sane.” “I would prefer to walk.” Fenris answered. He stood fluidy from his chair before bending over to grab a small duffle bag near his feet. The process gave Marian a view of his toned ass and she allowed herself a few moments of subtle admiration. Who could blame her? The moment she glanced up Fenris’ eyes met hers with a knowing, calculated glint and Marian narrowed her eyes. Had he done that on purpose? Fenris slung his duffle over his shoulder, “ Shall we?” “Hawke can take you” Varric answered, “I prefer not to walk through the rain and the three of us would attract more attention anyway. You’ll need to keep your hood up. Don’t want anyone to notice a strange elf walking about and have your magisters get wind.” Fenris yanked the heavy hood of his jacket up and over his head; obscuring his snowy locks from view. With the zipper of his jacket pulled all the way up the collar of his coat he was able to hide some of his face and all of his tattoos. He looked suspicious but it was better than flaunting his identity. “Alright” Marian said, “Follow me.” Walking with Fenris was much more complex than it should have been. He refused to talk, prompting Marian to give up on conversion, and would only follow two steps to the left of her. She’d even experimented, moving closer at times or farther away, but the elf was stubborn in his proximity. The way he moved was deadly, each motion calculated, and it attracted attention. In some ways it bore similarities to the assassins among the Antivan Crows Marian interviewed a few years prior. She could only wonder just what Fenris’ duties had been while enslaved. It made her skin crawl. The safe house was a nondescript building near the edge of Lowtown. It appeared abandoned but Marian knew Varric kept the inside clean and stocked. Hidden from view were a few surveillance cameras which when activated monitored the front door and side windows. Varric, as well as the occupant of the home, would have access to the feed 24/7. The feed was of course only of the outside of the building to ensure privacy of the occupant. Complete with a high end alarm system the building was a haven of protection. Fenris remained quiet while Marian lead him to the front door, the keys Varric had given her already in her hands. She punched in the alarm code and shouldered her way in.The house was hardly larger than a two bedroom apartment, in fact that terminology better suited it. Upon entrance, the two were greeted with an open kitchen flowing into a tiny dining area and living room. A hallway resided near the back of the room which lead towards the two bedrooms and a single bathroom. It was small but Varric had taken the time to keep it tastefully decorated and welcoming. Marian flicked on a lightswitch and tossed the keys onto the kitchen table, “Well, home sweet home. It’s not much but I’m sure it beats wherever the hell you were staying before.” Fenris’ eyes flickered about the room, “Indeed.” “So” Marian continued, “As you can see the layout is pretty simple. Varric always keeps canned food stocked in the pantry but it tastes like shit so if you make a list I can get you more food tomorrow. Add any personal items you might need too- you know like toothpaste and shit. The locks are all set along with the alarm which I can leave you the code for. The television can be switched to watch the live feed on all the building’ entrances but Varric is the one who knows how to do all that not me. And that’s really about it. Oh, do you have a phone?” Fenris shook his head minutely. “We’ll have to get you one then- in the meantime if you feel threatened there is a home phone in each of the bedrooms. I’ll leave you my number, Varric’s, and the Hanged Man’s. Any questions?” “No.” Marian rose a single brow and took a moment to really look at Fenris again. With visible bags under his eyes and the way he shifted his feet it was obvious he was a mixture of nerves and exhaustion. No doubt he wanted her out of his way so he could finally relax; as much as one in his position could. She cleared her throat and pulling out her wallet drew out Varric’s business card , “Right, well I’m beat so I’ll be heading out. All the numbers you need are on here and the alarm code is 5900.” Fenris reached out for the card, his fingers angled in such a way that he would not have to touch her. He peered down at it in his hand, “Thank you. I will endeavor not to to call.” “Whatever you want.” Marian said nonchalantly, “Alright, I’ll see you tomorrow morning. Have that list of things ready for me.” ……………………The moment Fenris was sure he was alone he tore apart the safehouse. Drawers, cupboards, and any other hidden spaces were delved into. Although he was fairly certain Varric’s proposition was genuine there was always the potential of being betrayed for the bounty Danarius had on his capture. However, as Fenris continued to search he found nothing damning. Satisfied, he retrieved his duffel bag from the kitchen floor and journeyed back to the first bedroom he’d searched earlier. After setting the bag on the bed, Fenris reached with practiced ease for the concealed 9mm, Glock 43 in the holder hidden against his ribs. The gun felt right in his hands and he could breathe freely again. His mind fixated on that Hawke woman. She had not been what Fenris was expecting and he was uncertain what to think. He knew she was driven, that much was certain, but her ambition could be potentially just as dangerous to him as it was useful. At least she appeared not to be a mage. The mages he knew would not have bothered using a lighter to ignite a cigarette; it wasn’t a complete insurance however. Regardless, his time spent with her would have to be a careful balancing act that he wasn't sure he had the energy or time to manage. She also was attracted to him, easily proven at the Hanged Man. If need be he could use that to his advantage although he would prefer not. It was something he had utilized in the past during his time with Danarius and the first year of his escape. He liked to think he had put that behind him but survival made one do unexpected things. He supposed if the situation became too hazardous he could always dispose of her but the thought made him sick and brought back images he wished to forget. Images of blood and sightless eyes still frozen in betrayal.
Fenris sighed falling face up on the bed. It was soft, easily the best place he would sleep in a long time. Of course, there would be no sleeping tonight. It would leave him too vulnerable in such an unknown situation. His body objected strongly to the decision; aching with exhaustion. He could feel it down to his bones and within his limbs but Fenris knew he would manage. He had before. So instead, he stared up at the ceiling, white hair fanned out beneath him and gun in hand, thinking about how he would stay one step ahead of the woman named Hawke.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Marian drove her buick through Lowtown while enveloped in the aroma of hot sticky buns, boxed in the passenger seat, and purchased from Orana’s Bakery. With each passing minute the buildings of Lowtown shifted into increasingly decrepit homes and abandoned buildings; the ambiance of Darktown. This section of Kirkwall was named after the soot filled air thick like smoke and birthed from the overwhelming abundance of factories. The melancholic faces of those who begged on Darktown’s streets and the prominence of violence from an absent police force added to the area’s ghastly nature. It was not a place anyone desired to be; unless you were an undocumented mage.

Near the beginning of her work with Anders, Marian was introduced to the Mage Underground. It was an activist group working towards creating a society where people born with magic could be freed from oppression. It was common knowledge mages were legally required to wear an armband signifying their ability in public. The band was white with a shocking, crimson sunburst originating from the days of Templars and the Chantry. In truth, it was a lie that Templars no longer existed. Instead, the language was simply changed and Temples were now referred to as Handlers. These Handlers still maintained the ability to silence a mage’s power and supervised all magic use by their charge. Only healing magics and others deemed beneficial to society were allowed. The presence of these Handlers, as well as the forced identification, caused blatant discrimination and many mages were unable to find employment or housing. Not to mention a life of contentment. If a mage was found to be undocumented and without a Handler they were placed in a specialized prison called the Gallows. Some were still made tranquil if their crimes were dubbed extreme enough. It made Marian’s blood boil and she fully supported the work Anders and the others did. Whether it be pushing for political reform or freeing mages from their Handlers and granting them asylum in Darktown. Despite this passion, it took nearly full two years before Marian was trusted with the Mage Underground’s location of operation; an old warehouse on the outskirts of Darktown. As the familiar graffiti, in blacks and blues, appeared upon various building’s craggy walls Marian began to slow her vehicle. These marks, seemingly the art of vagrants, were disguised symbols to allies and mages of the Mage Underground. They promised shelter; in a hidden language provided by recruiters to recruitees. Marian pulled her car to the side of road, grabbed her bag, the sticky buns, and locked the door. She would have to walk the rest of the way. A vehicle parked outside an abandoned warehouse would draw suspicion.
The walk was short and no one accosted Marian on her way; she was hardly welcoming in appearance. The building she approached was immense in size and imposing, decorated with extravagant graffiti and dented metal plating. Marian knew magical runes, almost undetectable by other mages, littered the surrounding area to warn the occupants of any approaching persons.
She shifted her items to one arm and walking up to the heavy, metal door, pressed down on a seemingly broken buzzer with her free thumb. It took only a few breaths before she heard the tell tale click of the door unlocking . She pushed it open with her hip and was greeted by the shabbily dressed mage who had buzzed her in.“Here for Anders?” Marian nodded, “Sure am. Is he in his office?” The mage, she could never remember his name, smiled softly, “Of course, he’s updating the manifesto. Always working, that one, truly inspiring to us all.” “He would be more inspiring if he took a shower every now and then” Marian teased, “Thanks, I know the way.” Every hallway and door leading to Anders office was surveyed with security cameras and locked to anyone without the passcodes . The measures to others may be perceived as extreme but the authorities would be exuberant to take any of these mages into custody. Anders’ office, as the leader, was in the far back of the warehouse and behind many locked entrances. Several mages greeted her on her way; familiar with her presence. Marian punched in the code to Anders’ private quarters, waiting until the light on the alarm pad turned green, before entering. The moment she walked in Anders looked up from his desk and grinned. Anders was a good looking man; if he took the time to present himself as such. His strawberry blonde hair was often pulled back into a sloopy half tail and his jaw was littered with light stubble. His nose was a bit long for his face and at times his eyes appeared pinched as if he were staring into a bright light. But, if he relaxed the planes of his features they altered into an earnest, traditionally handsome face. She lifted up her box, “Brought your favorite from Orana’s. They’re still warm.” His grin only widened, transforming his face from exhaustion to jubilation. Marian grinned in return, placing the box on his desk. He took no time to open it and grab one of the pastries, taking a large bite. “So.” Anders asked around a mouthful, “Why are you here? I would love you to just be visiting but I know that’s not usually the case.” A playful smirk toyed across Marian’s lips, “As Varric would say, “you wound me”. Her expression sobered suddenly, “But you’re right. Truthfully, I’m here to warn you and hopefully not destroy our friendship.”Despite the suspicion playing across his features Anders’ eyes grew warm like honey, “I doubt you could do that, Hawke. You know how I feel...what do you have to tell me?”Marian shifted uncomfortably. Her relationship with Anders had always been professional during their time working together. Afterwards they were able to maintain a strong friendship due to shared ideals. That friendship had morphed into something more for Anders and although he was certainly tempting Marian was not too horrible of a person to fuck him. Not when it would mean one thing to him and something entirely different to her. So instead, she pretended she never knew what he meant. It was cowardly and childish but it had worked for the past two years. “Right well, you might feel differently in just a minute”, Marian mumbled, “I’m writing a new piece. Its’ topic may not exactly put mages in the best light but I promise I’m going to do my damn best to avoid that. I just want you to know in case this increases the amount of pressure the Mage Underground gets from Kirkwall’s city council and law enforcement.” Anders put down his half eaten sticky bun, brows furrowed, “What do you mean by it might not put mages in the best light? I thought you were an ally? Someone we could trust to help fight against the injustices facing all mages.” His voice rose as he spoke; passion and an edge of desperation leaking into his words. Those eyes, warm just a moment before, were now hard like chipped gold, “You can’t possibly be willing to do this, Hawke. Not with what happened to you sister. What is the bloody piece even about?” The mention of Bethany stung and Marian swallowed down the lump in her throat roughly, “I don’t want to tell you that just yet; there are some details that still need to be worked out. Like I said I wanted to give you a warning considering our friendship. You know I support what you do here and not just because of Bethany. But I also have a job and I’m going to fucking do it. Don’t ask me to put aside what I want just because it doesn’t coincide with your expectations for me.” Anders laughed; face dark and twisted with anger, “My expectations for you? I thought you were someone to count on. I guess I really don’t know you the way I thought I did. If you really supported us , supported your sister, you wouldn’t let this story run at all. You wouldn’t put yourself before the oppressed. I can’t deal with this right now. This is a place of solidarity and justice so just leave.” Even expecting his response, it was like a slap to the face. A sliver of doubt, the fear she may be making the wrong choice, wormed its’ way to Marian’s core but she snuffed it out immediately. “Okay” she said, “Just don’t let this ruin us. I’ll see you around.” Anders didn’t even bother to look up. The drive back to Lowtown was significantly more harrowing than the trip to Darktown. Flashes of Bethany’s face, the warmth in her brown eyes and the easy smile, plagued Marian. Those memories were replaced with Bethany’s vacant expressions and the brand upon her forehead. The monotone of her once chipper voice. Marian pulled over to the side of the road, vision blurring with angry tears. She struggled to take calming breaths but her chest was too tight and her lungs to small. With a strangled wail she clenched her fists and slammed them against her steering wheel. A few pedestrians, strolling down the street, glanced her way as the car horn sounded. It was enough to shock Marian out of her rage and she hurriedly wiped at her eyes. Clearing her throat roughly she put her car back in gear; she had a broody elf to visit. There was no time to be miserable. There was no time to grieve Bethany. The safehouse was just as vacant looking in the day as it was at night. Marian made sure to knock on the hard oak door before disarming the alarm and making her way in. The moment she entered she paused. It looked like someone had robbed the place. Cupboards were thrown open and canned food tossed aside; the couch cushions and the couch itself flipped and left on the floor. All the cushions were marred with slits, the stuffing torn out and left in a careless pile. Marian had witnessed paranoia from clients before but none at this level. This was going to be an even longer day. She did not have the patience. She schooled her face to mask her shock, “Fenris? You in here? I might not find you through all this shit.” Yes, make it a joke Marian, that’s what you do. At the sound of her voice, Fenris appeared from one of the bedrooms. Even from a significant distance, Marian could see the circles under his eyes had darkened to a deep purple and his mouth was set in a weary line. She doubted he had gotten any sleep since she left him. Not surprising considering. “What do you want?” The deep timber of his voice, roughened in exhaustion to sound like sandpaper, was still shocking. “I told you I would be here early.” Marian said, “You know, to get anything you might need and to meet up with Varric. He should be here soon enough. He’ll probably shit himself at the sight of this place though.” Fenris glanced around the room as if just noticing its state, “I suppose I could have cleaned.” “You think?” Marian quipped only to earn a frigid glare. The elf could kill with that glare. Ignoring him, she padded into the open kitchen and grabbed one of the wooden chairs, turning it to face him before she sat down. “You want to take a seat? Maybe get something to eat that you haven’t thrown on the floor? Or, I think those apples under the table aren’t bruised too badly.” Fenris glowered, brows forming a near ‘v’, before making his way to Marian and pulling out his own chair. He sat as far from her as possible, arms crossed against this toned chest, body taunt with anticipation as if ready to spring up and flee. He did not look the least by amused. “What is it you want, Hawke?” Marian cocked an eyebrow, “I can’t take the time to get to know my newest friend. Make sure you’re well provided for and comfortable?” Fenris shifted in his chair, “By “get to know” you mean gain information for your articles? Just speak plainly; we are not friends.” “Are you always this charming?” Marian asked drily “You must have been so popular in your old role”A deep, animalistic growl emerged from Fenris’ throat while his lip curled in disgust. Marian’s eyebrows shot up, her lips parting minutely. For the life of her she couldn’t decide if that was incredibly sexy or completely absurd. She would go with absurd; it was safer that way.“And you” he snarled, “must submit to bribery with your lack of competence in a profession you chose.”Marian narrowed her eyes, “Bribery worked on you, didn't it? Desperation drives people to do terrible things so don’t act like you’re any better than me. I’m sure you’ve done some awful shit to survive.I would imagine all slaves have.” Fenris stood suddenly from his chair, knocking it over, “Futue te ipsi! You know nothing of slavery.” She held up her hands, “I said I would imagine; never claimed I knew so you can calm the fuck down.” Fenris only clenched his jaw harder, a muscle visibly twitching. Marian sighed. She had a shit morning and she knew she was taking it out on Fenris. Not exactly the best idea considering they would need to work together. Just as she opened her mouth to apologize there was a knock at the door and Varric strolled in. The room seemed to still as the dwarf took in the mess and the visible animosity between Fenris and Marian. The bag he held in his hand threatened to slip from his grip as he wrestled with his shock, “Well shit. There’s a story here, isn’t there?” “Fenris had a rager and didn’t invite us.” Marian interjected with relief. Varric was the perfect buffer. Things could calm down on their own now. Fenris shot her another cold look before addressing Varric, “I apologize. I do not mean to appear ungrateful. I have learned during my time on the run that few can be trusted; I had to ensure my safety.” Varric surveyed the room again, “I prefer Hawke’s version. Better potential for a story there.” Hawke snorted, “I vote we just move on. What’s in the bag Varric?”He pulled out a thick manilla folder, black hair dye, and a burn phone that Varric always used with clients in hiding. “This is the contract” he said to Fenris while sliding the folder to him, “Read it over and if you have questions I have a lawyer I can provide for you. This cell phone already has my and Hawke’s numbers programmed in. We also have its’ number. I’m assuming you don’t have much of a social life but don’t use it for anything else but to contact us. If it still gets compromised destroy it; just like in the movies.” Fenris grabbed the phone, pocketing it, “And the hair dye? I told you it will make no difference.” “Maybe not before” Varric responded, “But your new identification will say you’re Dalish to help with those markings of yours. Combine that with your new look and you should blend in easier.” Fenris sighed but took the box, “I am not fond of the Dalish although I suppose I do not like most people.” his green eyes darted to look pointedly at Hawke before training once more on Varric, “I will play your part, dwarf.” “So, it’s decided then.” Varric said, “I have to meet with my contacts working on your identification, elf. Trying to move it along as fast as I can but sometimes these things take time.” “How long?” Fenris asked. Varric rubbed his beardless chin, “Probably a few weeks. Possibly more.”Fenris seemed to deflate on his chair, his shoulders slumping, “I see. I suppose I will be unable to leave this place until then.”“Unfortunately”, Marian answered, “ It might go by faster than you think. But, anyway, I need to head out too. We’ll talk later.” She followed Varric to the front entrance not wanting to be alone with Fenris again; just as she went to close the door behind her Fenris called out. “No fish.” She paused in surprise, looking over her shoulder, “What?” “You asked me if I needed anything.” Fenris stated, “I do not like fish. I have no preference otherwise.” Marian rose an eyebrow, holding back a satisfied smirk. He might just be talking about food but this was progress. Maybe she didn’t fuck up as much as she thought. She gave a half hearted wave goodbye before shutting the door, “Alright, Fenris, no fish.”
…………………..Fenris wrinkled his nose at the strong, acidic scent of hair dye. His once snowy locks were now saturated in the black substance along with a few smears across his forehead. It irritated the three dots of lyrium there and he was relieved to finally turn on the shower and step inside.
He washed quickly, despite the soothing warmth of the water; not wanting to remain vulnerable in his own nudity. The water ran dark, staining the white ceramic of the shower and swirling like ink around the drain. Fenris stared at it mindlessly, escaping for just a moment from the prison of his thoughts. Eventually, the water began to clear and he was free to dry off.

The process of rubbing a towel over his skin still aggravated Fenris’ markings no matter how careful he was. Being forced to look at his own body exceeded that physical discomfort. To see the mutilated skin, to remember what it represented, would never fail to rise bile in the back of his throat.

He gazed up at the fogged mirror, green eyes examining his now raven hair and trailing over the repulsive lines across his entire form. They snaked down his chest and defined torso, running down in swirls and curves across his arms and legs. His cock, hanging limp yet heavy between his legs was even marred by twin lines of lyrium. He wanted to rip apart his own skin. Wanted to smash the mirror in front of him so he would not have to endure this again. And that Hawke, throwing what he was in his face so casually, he wanted to break her apart as well. He was not a gentle man after all.
Fenris grabbed an apple after dressing and returned to the bedroom he chose earlier. He’d tossed the cell he’d been given on the bed before his shower and the screen now flashed with a notification. The dwarf, no doubt, ensuring his investment functioned. It was not. Instead, Hawke’s name appeared on his screen:To: Unknown
From: Marian Hawke-I’m texting you since we can’t seem to talk without bitching at each other. I get that we’re off to a bad start. I’ve been a bitch. I'm good at that but I’m also a damn good writer. I need this to work out. You do too. Anyway, that’s it. I’ll see you tomorrow to start the interviewing process. Expect me around noon. If you have questions you know how to reach me. Fenris snorted, tossing the phone back onto his bed. She truly was infuriating; that woman. To think he would have to tell her of his life made him ill. But perhaps it was good she held no sympathy for his situation, she would not pity him. He picked up the phone: To: Marian Hawke
From: Unknown-Very, well.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Fenris could not recall the last time he slept. He had tried to keep track, but as the fifth day approached, he came to the realization his awareness only added to this torture. In truth, his mind was so addled and his body beyond exhausted he could hardly bring forth conscious thought. He could not even remember what he had done to displease his master. Whatever it had been must have been inexcusable to deem this treatment. Master loved him after all. Anytime Fenris’ body attempted to lapse into sleep the soles of his feet were tazed and the bare skin of his back flogged by the guard on duty. His arms, stretched out above him and secured with cuffs, had lost feeling long ago. The metal bit into the skin of his wrists and dried blood caked the torn skin. Twice he had succumbed to hallucinations; visions of his master’s apprentice Hadriana and her mocking face. Of her wandering hands, cold mouth, and sharp nails. He was being provided water and a gray, gruel like substance for food but was not allowed the decency to relieve himself properly and instead remained clothed in his soiled pants. The stench made him want to vomit. The worst of his punishment was that Master refused to visit. Fenris had not been separated from Master for this long and he found himself aching for his presence. Master loved him after all. Fenris was robbed from his wandering mind as the heavy metal door slid open and bright light streamed in. It was a beacon in this darkness and the watering of his eyes was caused more from his relief than the stark adjustment to the sudden light. He dropped his gaze immediately the moment he could see the figure in the door clearly; Master had finally come. Fenris flinched as light steps, faint against the cement flooring, approached him. A voice, like a caress, reached his ears, “My dear, poor pet. Look at what you make happen to you. So disgraceful.” Shame blossomed in Fenris’ chest, “This slave is sorry, Master. I only wish to please you, Master.” Silence accompanied the cell after Fenris spoke and he hesitantly glanced up at his master’s face. Master’s features, considered plain by many, remained frozen in an expression that concealed his thoughts. Fenris let his gaze fall back to the floor of his cell; the ground appeared blurry and he knew tears were brimming his eyes. So shameful. Master sighed, “I know my pet. Yet, you continue to fail. I think a few more days in here will do you well.”“Please, Master” Fenris croaked, “Let me please you. I only wish to serve you.” Master shook his head and trained his gaze at the still present guard, “Tell the others to keep him here for another three days. Same treatment as before but do not let him die. I will not see my investment ruined.” Fenris held back a sob as the sounds of his master’s steps vanished behind the metal clang of the cell’s door. It was replaced by the whisper of a whip unraveling and the delighted chuckle of the guard. “You heard your master; let’s continue.” …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..Marian sat back in her chair, staring at the words and blinking cursor on her computer screen. It was already the third month of her time interviewing Fenris and as they spoke the narratives he told had become increasingly personal. Gone were the information dumps about how Tevinter politics functioned. Or the details of how the structure of the slave markets worked. Instead, it was replaced with the gritty realities of a slave's life. She’d asked for it, unfortunately shock value ensured more readers, but she didn’t realize what she was going to expose herself to. Even the horrors of the Antivan Crows paled in comparison to this twisted shit. It made her regret her first conversations with Fenris more; she truly was a bitch. The worst part was all her exchanges with him somehow evolved into an argument. They just couldn’t seem to mesh and it was hindering her work. Plus, there was a part of her, despite Fenris being a prick, that genuinely wanted to know him. Maybe, it was time to interact outside the environment of their professional relationship. Fenris hadn’t left the safehouse since arriving and there was a game of Wicked Grace planned tomorrow night at the Hanged Man. Marian hit the save icon on her document; she would invite him tomorrow and hopefully they could start to mend what she had broken. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………Fenris starred at the rectangular piece of plastic set in front of him. His own face, hair dyed to its’ current onyx, donned the card alongside an alias and personal identifiers. He snorted at the irony; once again another person had given him a name. This time it was Theron Mahariel; painfully Dalish in nature, and he found he hated it. At least he had made Fenris his own. He had expected Hawke today but the sun had already set and she usually stopped by in the mornings. So, he spent his day going through his standard exercises, cleaning his gun, and watching the local news to see if there were hints of Danarius. Instead, there was a segment on the shock waves Hawke’s articles were causing within the community and political arenas. Only two had been published so far and the effect they had was greater than Fenris had imagined. It was only a matter of time before Danarius’ agents were able to track down Thedas’ Geographics true place of operation. Then, Fenris would be able to begin his true plans and take out those who hunted him. He could care less about his confidentiality but letting Varric or Hawke know he wanted to be found would complicate matters; he only hoped they would not be harmed. Despite everything, he did not want their blood on his hands. He was tired of having them stained red and being haunted by vacant eyes. Fenris was startled from his contemplation when a knock sounded at the front door followed by the disarming of the alarm. He looked up from his place at the table and frowned as Hawke casually strolled in. She held such an easy claim on this place and it only reminded Fenris of the debt he owed. She gave him a half hearted wave before joining him at the table, “Did you miss me? I always wonder what you do here when you’re alone.” “I dance.” The joke slipped out like water between his fingers and Fenris instantly felt like a fool. He struggled to reign in the heat he felt at his cheeks and ears, cursing himself for the slip in character. He would not be embarrassed in front of this woman. Hawke just snorted, “Who knew you had a sense of humor? I like it.” “I was thinking” she added while avoiding his gaze, “It’s been a little over three months since you got here and about two weeks since Varric was able to get your id and paperwork. If I were you I know I would be going stir crazy-despite the dancing. If you’re up for it there’s a game of Wicked Grace at the Hanged Man. There will only be a few people I trust and it’ll be in Varric’s suite. They wouldn’t know who you are anyway since I use Malcom as my pen name and Varric goes by Bianca. Not to mention he has a trail of publishing companies to keep Thedas Geographics origin under wraps. Anyway..I know it’s short notice...but it could do you some good..I think..?” Fenris knew he was staring, but this was not what he thought Hawke would be suggesting today. He had assumed it would be related to more details from the last anecdote he gave her but apparently Hawke felt the need to integrate herself even further in his life. Had she not done so enough? His instant reaction was to decline but as he observed her face it was open and genuine. She rarely appeared so and it softened her features. Made her somehow pretty and younger in a way he had not thought possible for her. Normally, Fenris found her to to be a severe sort of beauty; with her constant smirk and superiority. It reminded him of Hadriana and often made his stomach twist. He cleared his throat, “Perhaps you are right. I will admit I have been...antsy.” Hawke grinned with her teeth, “Perfect. We can head out now so if you need anything I’d grab it.” Fenris stiffened in surprise, “You mean for us to leave now?” “Well yeah, it’s already eight and everyone else will be there. I’m guessing you’re going to want to walk so that will take more time.” “I see.” Fenris stood from his chair and slipped his new id in his jacket’s pocket, “I have all that I need already. Lead the way.” The walk was silent. Hawke did not try to lure him into conversation and he found himself grateful. And as the two passed several alleyways, he resisted placing a reassuring hand on the hidden holster beneath his heavy jacket. The familiar route and street signs, memorized from months ago, were the only things keeping him from bolting. He supposed if this was some form of trap he still had the element of surprise. Fenris had purposefully hidden from Hawke and Varric the abilities his lyrium markings gave him. If he needed to make a quick escape taking them unaware would prove beneficial. Truthfully, there were a few instances were his arguments with Hawke had threatened to activate the lyrium by emotion alone but Fenris had managed somehow. Infuriating woman; she would ruin all his plans by simply existing. The Hanged Man looked just as Fenris remembered; sign flickering and exterior a chipped brick. Marian lead him down the side alley Varric had months ago and through the employee only door. They were greeted by the deafening sounds of bar goers and chaos from the kitchens; it was much louder then Fenris’ previous memories. One of the bartenders, a middle aged woman, shot Hawke a displeased look before grabbing a tray of fresh chicken wings. “I don’t know why Norah hates me.” she whispered to Fenris as they went up the stairs, “Never did anything to her.” Fenris rolled his eyes, “It is simply you. The hate you inspire is unfortunate.” Hawke shot him a glance over her shoulder, pausing with her hand on the doorknob to Varric’s suite, “You’re just full of jokes today. Keep it up and I might actually start to like you.” “That would be increasingly unfortunate.” he said dryly and Hawke snorted in amusement.“I suppose it would. Enough talking, get ready to meet the crew.” Fenris steeled himself; if she were to ambush him this would be the opportune time. However, instead of bounty hunters he was greeted with a different sort of ambush; the kind only inebriated individuals could make. Varric appeared much the same, seated at the head of the table with an impressive amount of betting chips before him. He raised his mug of whiskey at Hawke’s arrival and skillfully hid his surprise at Fenris’ appearance. To his right was an attractive woman with skin darker than Fenris’ own. Her thick, dark hair fell in waves to her shoulders and caused the eye to travel down to her gaping shirt; boasting an abundance of cleavage. She was the type of exuded confidence while maintaining an air of nonchalance. A few others, training their eyes on him, resided around the table. There was a petite elf with wide, green eyes that belayed a sense of innocence. Vallaslin, in artistic, earth toned loops adorned the exposed breadth of her forehead and high cheekbones ending in two branches beneath her bottom lip. Her hair was cut short to further expose the length of her ears, whereas most elves preferred to keep it long and hide as much of their heritage as possible. It was obvious she was Dalish and held her elven lineage in high esteem; a rarity outside the reservations. If they could truly be considered reservations. Instead, they were more like prisoner of war camps meant to pacify the Dalish and the public who took an interest in the civil rights of elves. There was also a man, strawberry blonde hair held back in a loose tail and stubble littering his jaw. His eyes were gold and tired and his lips drawn in a tight frown. He eyed Hawke from behind his mug with a mixture of anger and longing and Fenris knew there was a story there. A spurned lover perhaps? He would not be surprised if Hawke had many. “Hello my darlings” Hawke greeted cheerfully, “Say hello to Theron; he’s new so don’t scare him off.” It took Fenris a moment to remember Hawke was referring to him and when he did he gave a stiff nod. “Theron, you know Varric. The rest are Isabela, Merrill, and Anders; in that order.” The one called Anders set down his mug with an exaggerated thud, “I didn’t realize you would be here tonight, Hawke.” “I didn’t realize you would be either” she replied; her voice pitched low in discomfort. It was not a tone Fenris was familiar with from her and he scrutinized her face in surprise. Other than the downturned corners of her mouth there were no hints to what she was thinking. Anders narrowed his eyes at the dwarf, “Varric invited me.” “Are you and your delicious friend going to sit down or are we all just going to waste time? I have money to win.” Fenris’ eyes flickered to Isabela. He curved his shoulders protectively as he noticed her appraising glance. Her nearly amber eyes trailed up his body, an appreciative, hungry glint to them. It was as if he were standing before Danarius’ guests once again, naked and presented as an unwilling offering to their pleasure. He forced himself to stand straight and met Isabela’s eyes in a sharp glare. He would not let her reduce him to a submissive plaything, even in his own mind.Isabela only smirked and took a long dreg from her mug; eyes still locked on his. Her tongue darted out to lick the corner of her mouth.“I told you not to scare him away” Hawke teased, although there was a hint of malice to her tone, “But you’re right let’s get this game started.” She gestured for Fenris to take a seat next to her with the elven woman on his other side. Merrill leaned towards him after he was situated, excitement plain on her face, “Is that vallaslin? I have never seen any like it before? Your name is Dalish; what clan do you come from? I haven’t seen you in the alienage and it’s so rare to find any outside of the reservations-” Hawke cleared her throat, “Let’s put a freeze on any personal questions tonight, alright Merrill?” The small elf blushed, “Oh my! Of course, I would never want to pry!” She looked Fenris in the eye, “Ir abelas, lethallian*.” Fenris nodded, “Mas serannas*.” Merrill’s face beamed at the sound of her native tongue and Fenris could see Hawke watching him closely from the corner of his eye. He never told her that he was fluent in multiple languages; she would no doubt ask about it later. As Varric shuffled the deck, a fresh mug of the Hanged Man’s signature brew was passed to both Hawke and Fenris. Hawke quickly attempted to explain the game’s rules as the cards were passed out and assured Fenris he would pick it up as the game went on. As time went on the alcohol in his system became pleasant, casting the events and the room in a warm glow and Fenris found himself relaxing; a dangerous state really. He did not engage in conversation, instead choosing to observe the light banter, and as the rounds of Wicked Grace passed he found Hawke was right and he easily adapted to the rules of the game. The pile of chips Hawke had loaned him had grown steadily and Fenris took a silent pleasure in stacking them into neat, individual piles. The expression of contempt on Anders’ face only managed to increase Fenris’ amusement. The man had been shooting him dirty looks throughout the night and Fenris could only assume he misunderstood the type of relationship he had with Hawke. If only he knew just how much Fenris could not stand her. Another round ended with the Angel of Death card and Fenris gathered the substantial pot.“Damn beginner’s luck” Hawke groaned, “should have known better than to bring you.” “And where did you find such a delectable stray?” Isabela asked coyly while she began passing out the next round of cards; a twinkle in her eye. Fenris bristled, “I am no stray.” “Isabela could you please try to go one afternoon without trying to sleep with someone new?” Hawke bit out, “We met a while ago while I was in Lowtown. Theron just moved here from Ferelden so we got to talking.” Merrill perked up at the mention of Ferelden, “Truly? You don’t sound or look Ferelden but our clans must have crossed paths at some point. We only just migrated to the Free Marches. It’s the Sabre clan. Have you heard of us, lethallin?” “Merrill” Hawke warned, “Remember what I said earlier.” Merrill’s ears seemed to drop, “Of course, I forgot.” Hawke gave her a kind smile, “It’s alright; Theron just doesn’t like to talk about it. Right, Theron?” Fenris grit his teeth together, annoyed Hawke felt the need to speak for him, but managed to bite out, “Right.” “But why the secrecy?” Anders suddenly spoke up, “It’s not like you have anything to hide. Right?” Anders’ golden eyes bored into Fenris accusingly; a smothered fire of vengeance just below their surface.Hawke spoke before he could, “Don’t do this right now, Anders. Especially not here,” Anders barked out a bitter laugh and pushed himself away from the table to stand, “I think I’ve had enough for tonight.” Hawke rose from her own seat as he gathered his belongings and began to head for the exit. The two of them stopped just before the door and with a glance over her shoulder Hawke began to speak to him in a hushed tone. Even with his elven hearing, Fenris was unable to hear what the two of them discussed; he could only pick up on the heated tenor of their words. The others at the table shared a look and Varric cleared his throat, “Hey Hawke, you in for another round?” Hawke and Anders froze, their conversation ending abruptly. When Hawke turned to face the table, Anders took the opportunity to slip out the exit and slam the door shut ; she winced at the sound like it hurt her personally. “I actually think I’m going to head back. You good to go, Theron?” Fenris took another long sip of his ale, grabbed his winnings, and got up from the table, “Yes.” “You could stay, kitten.” Isabela directed towards Fenris, “I have more than enough room.” “Bye, Isabela” Hawke snapped. She gave her signature half hearted wave to the others, “We’ll see you guys another night.” Fenris simply nodded his farewell and followed Hawke’s back out of the room. It had only begun to turn dark on the walk to the Hanged Man but the journey back was ominous in its lack of light. It reminded Fenris of locked cells and the bite of the whip and he struggled to maintain his mask of calm. It was a relief when Hawke, stopping in the street to face him, spoke.“Did you enjoy yourself?”Peering down at her face, so open and vulnerable, Fenris found he could not look away. Her eyes shone with hope and her cheeks, normally so pale, were flushed with a mixture of alcohol and the night’s chill. She so obviously wanted him to say he had a good time. Fenris could read it plainly in the tension of her body and he found himself not wanting to hurt her; odd really. But why does she care? Why do I? “It was tolerable. It appears, however, that you did not enjoy yourself.” Fenris stated, “You and Anders...you are close yet you fight.” Hawke sighed and ran a hand through her auburn hair, “ Look, I’m only telling you this since I know you aren’t in the position to go tell anyone and you might be around them again. Merrill and Anders are mages. Anders knows what I do for a living but he won’t identify you so don’t worry. He’s pissed about the amount of backlash the mage community is getting from our articles and wants me to stop the stories. People don’t exactly look kindly on mages when they’re reading about the horrors of the Tevinter Imperium.” “They are mages?”, Fenris growled, “And you thought it wise not to tell me beforehand?” Hawke’s already pale face grew ashen, “Look, I get that I should’ve probably told you before we went but would you have gone if I did?” Rage surged through Fenris’ body and he struggled to keep himself from igniting his lyrium, “Fasta vass*, woman! I will not have you manipulate me. Have you learned nothing from what I have told you? Mages will always find a reason to abuse their power; they are a viper in the nest and you are a fool to align yourself with them.” “You better watch yourself”, Marian snapped, “Anders and Merrill are good people and are nothing like the magisters. Fuck, Kirkwall is nothing like the Imperium! Mages are the ones who are imprisoned and enslaved here. You should at least feel some sympathy for them!” The lyrium in Fenris’ viens burned. His anger and the pure audacity of this woman was nearly unbearable. He should have never trusted her. He made a disgusted noise from the back of his throat before turning and striding away with purposeful steps, “I knew you were not to be trusted; leave me.” “Fenris” she called trying to keep up with him, “You can’t just run off without me. It’s not safe for you.” “I am more than capable of handling myself” he hissed, “For your own safety I would recommend you stay away from me.” Hawke came to a sudden halt, eyes narrowed, “Don’t threaten me.” “Then” Fenris gritted out, “Do not follow.” Her face, so open moments before, hardened into a cold mask; lips pressed into a thin line, “Fine Fenris, get lost. Get abducted. See if I care, you stubborn ass.” Fenris snarled, spitting on the ground at Hawke’s feet before turning sharply on his heel. He could feel her heated glare as he left her behind in the open street. That, fucking, infuriating woman. She would not make him a fool again.  *Fasta Vass- Tenvinter curse *Ir abelas, lethallian- I’m sorry, friend *Mas serannas- Thank you

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Marian woke to the type of headache only a hangover would be generous enough to give. It took her a moment to realize she was in Isabela’s bed, although she knew nothing had happened, and that Isabela herself was gone. With a groan, Marian forced herself out of bed, grabbed her phone, and padded down the hall of Isabela’s apartment. She was greeted by her in the tiny kitchen, the smell of coffee fresh throughout the room. “You look like a hot mess, kitten.” Isabela said, “Coffee is fresh and there’s a bottle of stamina potion if you want an extra kick.” “Thank god”, Marian moaned and quickly poured herself a fresh cup. She grabbed the bottle of stamina, the amber liquid catching the kitchen’s lights like a prism, and poured herself a healthy portion. Isabela took a seat at the small round table located just outside and within view of the kitchen, “So, are you going to tell me why you tried to out drink me last night? On a weekday?” The coffee was still too hot when Marian took her first sip and she cursed under her breath. With a sigh she made her way to the table to join Isabela, “I had an argument with Fe-Theron last night after we left the Hanged Man. It was pretty fucking bad. I’m pretty sure he hates me at this point.” Isabela peered over her mug as she paused from drinking, “Since when do you care if someone hates you? Are you two fucking? He looks like he would either be the most vanilla fuck you could ever have or the most kinky. Which one was it? Tell your friend Bela everything.” Marian shot her a glare, “No, we’re not fucking. And I’m not sure why I care. We argued about mages and you know how much that shit matters to me; maybe that’s why. I’ve been trying my best to help that fucker too but look at the thanks I get.” “Shame. He’s so pretty to look at.” “Could you please get off the whole sex thing?” Marian begged, “I love you but sometimes it gets old and I know there’s more to you so stop trying to fool me and yourself.” Isabela’s face softened and she set down her mug, “You’re too sweet to me, kitten. Why you always try to hide behind that mouth of yours and the “I don’t give a shit” attitude I’m not sure. If your little spat really upset you then suck it up and go apologize.” Marian put her head in her hands, “Apologizing to that dick will kill me. But, I guess you’re right. It’s worth a shot.” The conversation ebbed from there; the two women occupied by their coffee and a few bagels with cream cheese. The stamina potion and coffee was starting to kick in when Marian’s phone went off on the table where she had set it. She could see Varric’s name across the screen and frowning she quickly answered. “Hey, what’s up?” “The broody elf is missing. I went to his place this morning to drop off some things and the safehouse was like a ghost town. Tried calling him but he wouldn’t answer. Was hoping he was with you or you knew where he went.” Marian stiffened in her chair and her heart felt like it dropped into her stomach, “No, I haven’t heard anything. God damnit, Varric we had a huge argument. Do you think he would leave town? Fuck, what if he left town?” “Well shit” Varric mumbled, “Maybe the broody bastard will answer you. Try, give me call if he does, and then meet me in my suite and we can go from there.” “I’ll find him Varric” Marian replied, “ If anything I’m good at hunting down information and people even when they don’t want to be found.”Varric chuckled, “Yeah, trust me I know. I’m hanging up; good luck killer.” Marian slumped in her chair with a defeated sigh the moment the call ended, “Well, looks like I won’t be able to finish my coffee. Thanks for the drinks Isabela but I have to head out.” Isabela quirked an eyebrow, “I gathered. Go find that delicious elf of yours.” Marian gave her a flat look and the finger before collecting her wallet and car keys. Her chest felt tight as she left the apartment and slid into her car parked on the side street. She took a moment to take a few collective breaths before starting her vehicle. Her words from last night kept playing through her head in a vicious cycle. She had told him she wouldn’t care if he got abducted and the thought that it could have happened that very night made her sick to her stomach. She would have to believe he simply went out early this morning and wasn’t in the mood to answer his phone. Speaking of which, Marian grabbed her own cell with one hand and called him while she drove. The phone rang as if it were taunting her and then stated the voicemail was full. No doubt Varric had called too many times. Cursing under her breath Mairan chucked her phone on the passenger seat. She would have to drive around Kirkwall and hopefully spot him.
……………………………………………………………………………………………………...She didn’t. The damn elf was nowhere to be seen and the few establishments Marian stopped at claimed they hadn’t seen him. It was already past noon by the time she parked outside the Hanged Man and made her way to Varric’s suite. He was waiting inside, face tense, and his phone at his ear. He hung up when he saw her, “No luck either?” Marian shook her head, “I looked all over Kirkwall and asked around but no one has seen anyone with his description.”Varric cursed under his breath. “I was thinking” Marian interjected, “I should wait at the safehouse in case he comes back. You have more contacts so hopefully one of them might have a lead.” Varric stood up from his chair and started to pace, “It could be a good idea. Look Hawke, I downplayed this a bit but my contacts have been keeping tabs on the Imperium. They aren’t pleased by what we’re doing here and have already sent out some emissaries to Ferelden, Orlais and now the Free Marches. They have people with them that claim they aren’t here to hunt anyone down but it’s obvious what their purpose is.” It was Marian’s turn to curse. “Even more reason for me to wait at the safehouse” she said, “I guess it’s not like we didn’t expect this but I wasn’t expecting them to take action so fucking fast. I suppose we can find a way to interview one of them. Get another side of the story.” “Hawke, I love your tenacity but that is one of the dumbest things I’ve heard you say.” She folded her arms across her chest, “Don’t be a dick. I should head over now; let me know if you get a hold of Fenris.”“Sure thing Hawke. And you let me know too.” ………………………………………………………………………………………………………Marian parked her car down the street from the safehouse and tried texting Fenris on her way to the building’s front door. Despite Varric stating Fenris hadn’t been there she still knocked, it was his home for the time being, before disarming the alarm and letting herself in. The inside was deathly quiet but nothing seemed out of place. Although, considering Fenris was a slob it was often hard to tell where things were. “Fenris?” When there was no answer Marian searched the few rooms the house managed to have only to find all were empty. She tried the phone again but it still went to voicemail. Frustrated she sent a quick text to Varric to let him know Fenris was still gone and settled in for the long wait. It was late evening by the time she heard the alarm disarm and the door creak open. A wave of relief washed over her as she watched Fenris enter the house and close the door behind him. The relief was quickly followed by a surge of anger. Fenris paused when he saw her, “How long have you been here?” “Just about all fucking day.” she snapped, “ I get that you were angry at me but you could have answered your fucking phone. We had no idea where you were and I was starting to think you got taken by some Tevinter asshole.” Fenris calmly made his way to the kitchen and started pulling out leftovers from the fridge, “I thought you could care less about what happens to me?” “Are you fucking kidding me? You put us through that for something so petty. People say things they don’t mean when they're angry Fenris. Of course I don’t want you to get forced back into fucking slavery; I’m not a monster. And to be honest you might be a complete dick but I do care about you as a person.” Marian could literally see the moment Fenris took all her words in. His brow furrowed in that near ‘v’ it always did and he grew still like he was made of stone. When he turned to face her she could see the confusion in his stunning, green eyes.“You were worried?” Marian threw her hands in the air, “Of course I was worried you ass.” Fenris’ brow furrowed more, “Why? Why do you care? Does your magazine mean that much that you are willing to put up with, as you put it, a “complete dick”. Marian exhaled through her nose, “Look, I do care about you. You’ve been through too much shit to have to go back into it again. It makes my stomach hurt just thinking about it. And no before you accuse me of it I don’t pity you. Varric was just telling me that there’s been activity from the Imperium in response to our articles. We need to be more careful now.” A light seemed to ignite in Fenris’ eyes, “Truly? They have arrived here? When?” His body language was too eager; too open for someone who was normally closed off and Marian scrutinized him closely. It made no sense that he would want anyone from Tevinter getting close to finding his location. It would either be a bloodbath or an ambush and either would no doubt cause some form of international ramification. She was about to explain when it hit her; he knew exactly what would happen. Marian looked straight at Fenris; making eye contact, “You want to be found.” The color beneath Fenris’ earthy skin seemed to drain, “I have no idea what you are implying.”Marian’s lips slowly aligned themselves into a queer smile and she walked up into Fenris’ personal space, “ Don’t try to bullshit me. I bet this was your plan all along; right? But don’t worry. An international incident, the dark workings of the Imperium, and an escaped slave on a quest for revenge…well this story has just gotten even more interesting. ” She leaned in so close she could feel Fenris’ breath on her face, “I’m in.”

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

A bottle of wine, nearly empty, sat on the table between Marian and Fenris. They hadn’t bothered to acquire glasses and instead passed it back and forth between them; fingers occasionally brushing. The past hours had been spent with Fenris giving Marian the names and dealings of the magisters in the Imperium. Danarius, his past master, was at the top of that list and Marian still felt queasy from Fenris’ blunt descriptions of the man. Or maybe that was wine. It was probably both. “Do you truly mean to publish these names? Their crimes?’ Fenris asked while reaching for the bottle. Marian shot him a look, “ I wouldn’t have spent the past four hours getting and recording this information if I didn’t intend to use it.” “And are you sure you are willing to deal with the consequences? Blood mages and their subordinates are not to be trifled with carelessly. You will most likely be hunted for the rest of your life.”“I’m aware.” Marian answered, “But I’m someone you shouldn’t fuck with too. Besides I’ve had others after me because of my writing.” She stole the wine bottle back from Fenris and took a long dreg nearly finishing it off, “We need to find more tangible, incriminating evidence. If there are emissaries here then they would be staying in the main embassy building. If we can get ears on what is going on in the privacy of their room we could find enough evidence to end them once and for all while they are in the Free Marches. Even diplomatic immunity only goes so far.” Fenris leaned back in his chair, “And how do you intend to do that? It is not as if we can simply walk in.” “Actually” Marian smirked, “That’s exactly what I intend to do. Remember, I have good friends in very high and supposedly illegal places. And let’s just say you’re not the only one Varric has gotten fake identification and...other certain legal papers for.” “How” Fenris asked in his usual deadpan, “Is it that someone such as yourself has so many resources?”Marian shrugged, “Trying to make a living after The Blight I guess. There is something about escaping death that makes people more inclined to ditch their so-called morals.” “I heard of the Blight even in Tevinter,” Fenris said softly, “I was told it was a sickness that slowly ate away at a person’s flesh and mind. I was also told there was a cure developed nearly three years ago? If that is your home why have you not returned?” Images of Carver’s face and the flesh of his body melting away in clumps flashed in Marian’s mind. The enforced burning of bodies had ensured that he could not be buried next to Father and they weren’t even allowed to have his ashes. The journey away from Lothering had been filled with anguish and near starvation; a deep desperation to survive. As much as Marian loved Ferelden she could never return to the place which harbored those memories. Besides, this was where Mother was buried and where Bethany. Even if she was a husk of herself Marian would never abandon her sister. Marian shrugged her shoulders in an attempt to appear casual, “Kirkwall is my home now and I’m not one to get stuck in the past. Something you might want to try by the way. But enough talk, we’re wasting time and energy here. We’ll need our rest since I want to do this first thing tomorrow.”Fenris grabbed the wine and threw his head back drinking the last of it. It revealed the lines of lyrium down his throat and the enticing bobbing of his adam’s apple while he swallowed. Mairan looked away with a strange twisting in her lower gut. “Yes” he said with a feral smirk, “Let us not put off this folly.” ………………………………………………………………………………………………………...The next morning was far too chipper in Marian’s opinion as she drove to pick up Fenris. Her feet were pinched from the heels she managed to shove them into and her expensive blouse and pencil line skirt were too confining. But, if she was planning on infiltrating the embassy she had to dress the part. A vase of flowers was secured in the passenger seat beside her, rigged with an enchantment that would allow Marian to hear any conversations near the bouquet for days. She would deliver the flowers to the Tevinter ambassadors and record any conversations they had in the privacy of their rooms. The enchantment was arranged so that all conversations would be contained in an old voice recorder and could be retrieved later. An odd enchantment created by an even odder dwarf. Marian would have to be meticulous in her execution of this facade in order to be successful. Which brought about the issue of sneaking Fenris in and out without someone questioning why he was there. She would have to go it alone and she already knew Fenris would fight her on it. Stubborn bastard that he was. As usual, she parked her car down the street and muttering curses towards her damn heels entered the safehouse. Fenris was already up eating an apple and raised one eloquent eyebrow at her appearance. “I did not know this was a formal event.”“I need to look the part if I’m going to search the embassy.” she huffed, “If anything you’re going to be the problem here. I’m assuming you don’t have anything formal to wear and more importantly you don’t have the same paperwork I do. We should have talked about this last night but I’ll admit it didn’t occur to me at the time.”Fenris paused to look down at his own clothes; a plain gray shirt, black jeans, and his ever present dark washed leather jacket. Not to mention his lack of footwear. “I suppose”, he said, “You have a point.” “We don’t have time to get you new clothes” Marian replied, “And we certainly don’t have time to get you forged documents. You just have to wait here while I search the building and plant our bugs. I know it’s not what you want but it will be for the best in the long run.” Fenris stiffened, “I will not stay behind while you delve into my past. I have my own ways of getting past security undetected.” “And how is that? Are you going to magically teleport there? Walk through walls? This isn’t a place you can just stroll into Fenris. It has security cameras, alarms, Handlers, and armed guards. I'm even going to be risking my ass poking my nose around there and I happen to like my ass.” He crossed his arms over his chest, “It will not be a problem. You are constantly asking me to trust you so give me the same courtesy.” Marian narrowed her eyes, crossing her arms in a mirror of Fenris’ own stance, “Against my better judgement I do trust you Fenris. But this has nothing to do with trust; it’s just common sense. We can compromise. You can drive with me and wait in the car. If anything goes south at least you’ll be there to back me up and get us the fuck out of there. You do know how to drive, right?”Fenris just stared at her with one of his more vocal expressions; the one with a deep furrow in his brow, narrowed eyes like slits of green, and slightly flared nostrils. It was the look he gave when he was going to be difficult and Marian felt the urge to pull his hair out. His stupid, silk like hair which she was certain had more body than her own. Damn elf. “You don’t get a choice in this” she continued warily, “I know you value having the ability to make decisions but if you don’t listen to me right now then we’re not going to be able to follow through with this plan. So please, just put your stubborn pride aside and accept what you can do to help.” For a moment it looked as if Fenris was going to continue arguing however he let out a long sigh and slumped his shoulders, “Fine, but I do not like this.” “Trust me” Marian grumbled, “The feeling is mutual.”
…..
Driving with Fenris for the first time was not an experience Marian would ever want to repeat. He was so tense it was palpable and despite her best attempts, she was unable to distract him. She could see him looking for each street name they passed; ensuring she was actually taking him to where she said she would. It stung. It wasn’t as if they had come to like one another in the past three months but they spent nearly every day working together. She had thought he would at least trust her. Hadn’t he just talked about it? As they approached the embassy building Marian was reminded of how unimpressive it was to look at. The exterior was a dull gray and the only source of decoration were a series of flag poles boasting the emblems of each country in Thedas. Even the Tevinter flag swayed in the wind regardless of the fact that the Imperium rarely associated with the rest of the world.Instead of parking right outside the building, Marian drove past the entrance and parked two streets down. Fenris had stiffened the moment they passed but he seemed to be able to deduce why they weren’t blatantly driving up to the front door; at least he wasn’t entirely dense. With the car parked, Marian took a breath, reached into her purse and retrieved a small plastic case resembling a retainer holder. Fenris watched curiously as she flicked it open and carefully picked up a thin, flat piece of metal. She watched him from the corner of her eye before using the rear view mirror to help her place the metal piece to the roof of her mouth. Small prongs activated as it touched the flesh and she winced slightly as they dug into the hard palate of her mouth. The metal then began to fasten and blend into the texture of the area leaving behind only a few small droplets of blood that Marian easily swallowed. As intended by the enchanter, the very same dwarf who had enchanted her flowers, Marian’s body seemed to shift before Fenris’ eyes. Her hair turned a mousy brown, her skin darkened to a slight tan, and her facial features warped into an entirely new, unassuming visage. It was a glamour and an expensive one.Marian could feel Fenris’ intense stare boring into the side of her head and turned to give him a look. He was closer than she expected, having leaned forward in interest at the sight of her transformation. She could see the flecks of silver and gold in his brilliant green eyes and could smell his decidedly male scent. It reminded her of some sort of spice. She jerked away quickly and cleared her throat, “What? You didn’t think I would risk showing my own face. If something goes south I need to be able to go about my life.” “I must confess” Fenris stated, “Your resourcefulness continues to surprise me.” Marian felt her face grow warm “Look at you, actually complimenting me.” Fenris ignored her, “Although I must ask, won’t the safeguards against magic pick up your device?” “Normally” Marian answered, “But this baby is fool proof and has never failed me. The guy who made it is a genius. We can talk about this more later if you want but right now I need to get in there before I lose my nerve. Also, my tights are riding up my ass crack and I really can’t wait to tear them off.” Fenris made a face, “How charming.”  Marian opened the car door, juggling the vase full of flowers in one hand and her purse in another. She peered back into the car before slamming it shut, “Remember to stay here, please.” Fenris glared, giving her the middle finger but at least he stayed seated as she walked away. She looked back once and was surprised to see his glare had softened into something resembling concern. Concern for her or for their mission Marian wasn’t sure. She did not have time to dwell on it or the strange twist in her gut the thoughts brought. She needed to focus on infiltrating the embassy after all. In order to get into the embassy, Marian would need to pass a security check as well as a check by unassigned Handlers to ensure she was not bringing in illegal magic. Once she actually managed to even enter the building, she would have to present the fake documentation Varric had made her which named her as an ambassador for the Cousland family in Ferelden. The Couslands were one of the ruling families alongside the Therrins and carried enough weight that others would hesitate questioning one of their ambassadors too religiously. It was the perfect cover. As expected, she was stopped the moment she reached the main doors. The two Handlers at the entrance eyed her coolly as she approached and Marian forced a small smile. The action made her feel ill as thoughts of Bethany flooded her mind but she snuffed the sensation out quickly. Now was not the time to wallow in her own self pity. The taller of the Handlers, an older man with a craggy face and neatly trimmed beard, gestured her forward. “Business and identification.” “Oh of course” Marian breathed trying her best to appear unassuming. In her experience, men always seemed to enjoy a naive woman to lord over.“I’m here representing the Cousland family. My identification papers are in my purse...if you could hold these flowers for me I can grab them. “The Handler shot his partner a look, clearly annoyed, “Don’t bother. I have to search your purse and person anyway.” The man, Marian had decided to call him “Craggy”, grabbed a hold of her purse and slid it off her shoulder before she could give him permission. A protest died in her throat as he shifted through the contents with a singular focus. The other Handler, a short squat man, stepped forward while Craggy searched and took the vase from Marian. “Arms out please” he instructed, “I need to search you. It should be quick, I promise.” He at least was somewhat polite and Marian grudgingly did as she was told. Her nose crinkled as his meaty hands passed over her body in search of any concealed items or weaponry. Personally, Marian thought this whole procedure was archaic. She would be stepping through metal detectors in just a moment and the Handlers had their “spells' ' to ensure she was clean of magic. For a moment she entertained herself by thinking of how Fenris would have responded to receiving a pat down. No doubt he would have socked the man in the face. The image was satisfying and Marian held back a smirk. Shorty stepped back when he was finished and Marian then felt the cleanse. It was a creeping chill that sucked the air from her lungs and made her skin tighten across her bones. The casting would in theory alert the Handlers to any magic Marian had on her person but as predicted the two men remained unaware of her glamour and the additional enchantment on the flowers. The sensation abated as the Handler ceased his cleanse and Marian could breathe again. Craggy folded her papers, placed it in her purse, and returned it to her, “Very well. You may proceed forward.” Marian quickly bent down to retrieve her flowers and looked up at Craggy, “Thank you, I know you keep us all safe.” The words felt like bile on her tongue.Craggy puffed out his chest, “Of course, miss” With a halfhearted wave, Marian proceeded through the building’s front doors and the metal detectors without any incident. Contrary to the outside of the building, the inside of the embassy was pristine and fit for housing ambassadors and other political figures from Thedas. The floor was a faux white marble and the walls were painted an eggshell white. The effect made one feel like they were in a large white box but it also boasted a sense of superiority. There were people about. Some situated in the foyer on the expensive appearing furniture and two standing idly by the indoor fountain featured in the center of the room. Marian made a beeline to the left towards the main desk and the frigid looking woman who sat behind it. She looked up from her computer at Marian’s presence and pursed her lips. A name tag, shined and formal, named her Allison.“Yes?”“I would like to request a meeting with the Tevinter ambassadors who arrived a few days prior. I’m here to represent the Couslands and welcome them to the Free Marches.” Allison sighed and aggressively tapped at her keyboard, “I’ll need identification please.” “Of course.” Marian stated and crammed her hand into her purse to present her papers once more, “Everything should be here,” The documents were snatched harshly from Marian’s hands and Allison’s grey eyes scanned them before typing more information into her computer. She slid the papers back to Marian, “It all looks to be in order Ms. Amell. You can wait in conference room six. If you would follow me please.” Marian was led down a series of hallways and into a cold, impersonal room with a large conference table.A few standard paintings one would find in an expensive hotel room donned the pale walls and the lack of windows gave off an oppressive air. “I will send out a request for the emissaries to meet with you. It should not take too long as they have no other appointments at this time.” With that, Marian’s guide left the room. Sighing, Marian placed the vase of flowers on the table and took a seat in one of the high backed chairs. There was a clock in the room, analoge, and it's ticking set the tone for her anxiety. Marian did not like to wait and she did not like to be alone. Thankfully, it took less than twenty minutes before the door swung open and a willowy, frigid woman dressed in finery strolled in. Her face was moon pale, lips dyed blood red, and her sapphire eyes were lined thickly in black. Her dark hair hung limp about her long face and just brushed her shoulders. She was trailed by three men and a meek, young girl with wide set eyes. When Marian had lived in Ferelden there was a type of venomous snake that hid in the tall grass. As a child, she had been told to be wary of them as they were deadly and struck from seemingly nowhere. However, while out riding with Bethany one of those vile creatures managed to strike Marian's horse on the fetlock. It had died by sunset. With just one look into that woman’s cold eyes, Marian knew she was one of those snakes personified.Swallowing down her apprehension, Marian stood from her seat and offered her hand, “Hello, it is a pleasure to meet you. My name is Elizabeth Amell, an ambassador of the Couslands. It is my honor to welcome you to the Free Marches.” Her hand was eyed coolly by the woman in front of her. Instead of grasping it, she folded her arms across her chest, “I would have expected a welcome far sooner than this. You may address me as Magister Hardriana.” Her voice was a poison that suited her nature. Marian lowered her hand, “Yes, well we wished for you to settle in Magister Hadriana however you have my sincerest apologies. Please accept these flowers as a gift and an apology.” Marian quickly grabbed her vase from the table and held out the gift. Hadriana’s eyes flickered about the flowers with distaste and for a few seconds Marian began to fear she would not accept them. Instead, the Magister motioned for the young girl at her side to collect them. “If that is all.” Hadriana spoke. “I was asked”, Marian interjected, “to offer assistance for whatever it may be you are visiting for. The Couslands wish to make your stay here as enjoyable as possible. If I may ask, what is the nature of your visit.” Hadriana’s eyes narrowed and she took a few steps forward until she invaded Marian’s personal space. Something heavy seemed to follow her and settle like a cloak. It made Marian recall the discomfort she once felt coming across a dead deer when camping with her father. It had been in the middle of decomposition and the smell of death still clung to her memories. Carver’s death flashed through her mind. He had been burnt before the smell took him but, yes, this woman carried that feeling of death with her. She leaned in to stare into Marian’s eyes, “I would suggest you tell your Masters they need not worry. My business is my own and I would like to avoid any...conflict. Do you understand?” Marian simply nodded. Hadriana leaned back and patted Marian’s cheek idly, “Good, pet. Now, I must be on my way. Business calls. Thank you for the flowers, they are quite...charming.” Her voice left no doubt that she in fact did not find them charming. Heat rose to Marian’s cheeks and her jaw tensed. For the first time since their interaction a familiar flame of rebellion stroked her blood. But, if this was to work she needed to remain the diplomat, “Of course, Magister.” With a wave to her people and without a backward glance, Hadriana left the room. The door swung shut behind her meek servant who clutched the vase to her chest and Marian was doused in silence again. Except for that analogue clock that seemed to mock her with it’s ticking. She glanced up at it. Not even five minutes had passed. Upset with herself, Marian quickly retreated back outside while ignoring the faces of those around her. Her heels clicked against the cement sidewalk and in irritation she kicked them off before stooping down to carry them with her. A fool. She was a fool. Her only hope was that something Hadriana or her servants said would be incriminating enough and caught on the recorder. Dread fell upon her as she thought of telling Fenris about her failure. Marian’s chest was tight when she finally managed to slip back into the driver seat of her car. Fenris’ eyes on her were intense as if he were attempting to gauge her state of mind. Marian could only wonder what he would discover. She cleared her throat, “I need to get out of here and drink. We can head back to my house. It's not far from here and it will be a good place to listen in on the recorder.” “What happened?” “I met one of your friends”, Marian stated, “I’ll tell you everything I promise but right now I really need to get the fuck away from this place. I feel...dirty. Sick.” Fenris’ gaze softened, a solemn look of understanding painting his face, “Very well.” His voice was softer than Marian had ever heard it and it made her want to cry. She struggled to process why she was so disgusted with what she had just experienced. She had dealt with people who lacked morals and even the basic human decencies before but there was something about Hadriana that made her want to vomit. The experience allowed her to envision not even a mere snippet of Fenris’ life. A life where he had no choice but to submit to that vile woman and others like her. Others worse than her. The urge to vomit intensified. Marian took a deep breath and put her keys into the ignition. Her legs shook as she drove to the old family estate less than twenty minutes away. Fenris was a quiet spectator in the passenger seat but his sympathy was tangible. It was confusing and made her head whirl. This was a side of Fenris she didn’t even know existed. Was this him unguarded? It was too much to think about. Marian had expected Fenris to say something when she pulled up to the old family estate. It was extravagant beyond necessity with a high decorative fence and a professionally maintained yard. But yet, Fenris remained silent and followed her into the estate like a shadow. Marian threw her shoes to the side and tossed her keys on the side table. She was just about to remove the enchanted piece of metal from the roof of her mouth when she saw Fenris tense from the tail of her eye. There was someone in her house.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Chapter Six: Confronting There was someone in the house. A sense of dread spiked with anxiety shot through Marian making her heart jolt. Then in the span of a breath, Fenris was there. He moved as if liquid. Flowing in a way that was both predatory and somehow beautiful only to rest before her as if a shield. A gun, not known to Marian, was held loosely in his grip and aimed towards the shadow now moving in the corner of the room. A shadow which morphed into a shape so familiar to her if not newly distant.“Fenris don’t.” The elf stiffened in front of her but did not lower his gun, eyes fixed on the shape that slowly emerged and revealed itself to be Anders. Anders’ amber eyes glowered at them both and his hands remained lifted, palms out, to show that he meant no harm. In truth, those hands lifted in a gesture of peace could easily become as deadly as the gun Fenris held.“Hawke” Anders stated dryly, “Call your dog off, will you?” Fenris growled and if the mood had been less tense Marian would have pointed out he was not helping Anders’ comparison. Instead she placed a gentle hand on Fenris’ shoulder. He felt surprisingly solid; she so rarely touched him it still took her by surprise to realize he was in fact as real as anyone else.“Fenris put away the gun. It’s Anders.” Fenris hesitated before lowering his weapon- he did not however replace it in the hidden holster beneath his jacket. One that Marian was going to have a discussion with him about. She couldn’t help but wonder what other weapons he had hidden on his person and how often he had been walking around with them. Had he had a gun on him when they went to the Hanged Man? Or all the late nights they spent with him talking while Marian typed furiously away on her laptop? She bit her lip and pushed the thoughts aside for now.“What are you doing here, Anders?” Anders’ face twisted into something ugly. His eyes darkened and his lips curled over his teeth in a sneer, “ I came so you would know what you have done, Hawke. Just this morning one of the shelters for the mage underground was raided. Thirteen mages were taken into custody and sent to the Gallows to undergo who knows what kind of torture. They’ll be made Tranquil I’m sure-worse than any death. And this isn’t the first raid. No, ever since you and your...beast...have published those articles the Handlers have become increasingly violent. The government is hounding us further and it is only a moment of time before they come knocking at my doors and then what?” Marian opened her mouth to respond but Anders swiped a hand her way motioning for her to remain silent. “No. You will listen to me and then you can talk. Talking is all you ever do and where has that gotten me? Where has that gotten the mages? The very same people as the sister you claimed to love so much? You have doomed us all and for your own personal gain. A vanity project. But I won’t let it happen. “ Anders' eyes began to shimmer a subtle blue while wisps of the same color escaped from his lips and sudden cracks in his skin. He took a step forward and Marian tensed her hands into balls at her side. Before Anders took a second step, Fenris was in motion with a harsh snarl. If Marian had thought he moved like water before she was mistaken. Fenris moved as if he was a part of the very air around him. He was but a blur of motion as he launched himself forward into Anders. The two fell backwards, pinning Anders to the wall while Fenris forced a strong arm across his neck and beneath his chin. Fenris’ free arm held his gun loosely against Anders’ temple. “Abomination” Fenris hissed, “I should have known.” Anders bared his teeth, gums showing, and the light beneath his skin grew stronger. “No.” The voice that escaped his lips was not his own as Anders gathered his strength. A strong pulse of magic sent Fenris backwards, his feet swept out from under him, so he fell on his back with a heavy thud. Marian, despite being further away from the blast, stumbled backwards and nearly fell to the hard floor herself. The impact of the magic was like being hit by a strong wave and struggling to stay above the surface-useless.“I am no abomination. I am the seeker of Justice and Justice answers to no one.” Fenris had already leapt back to his feet by the time Anders’ finished speaking and the sound of his gun firing rang through the room. Marian had heard guns go off before. When she worked with the Antivian Crows she had heard several however never had it been so sudden and so close to her. It made her body jolt and caused an ache deep in her ears. She gasped in a sudden lung full of air that left her nearly choking on her own breath. “Fenris, no.” It had all happened so quickly. Marian fought back angry tears as she looked forward expecting to see an oozing bullet wound placed neatly in Anders’ forehead. But yet, the bullet remained suspended in the air before him before clattering to the floor uselessly. She took a chance. Lunging forward Marian, wrapped her arms around Anders and held on tight. Surprised she was even able to touch him, she pressed her mouth against his ear and spoke, “Anders come back. Don’t let yourself become an example for the Handlers. I refuse to believe you are this weak. I refuse to have invested in someone who falls to this.” Anders’ brow furrowed the light around him flickered. Marian pressed forward, “You’re angry with me. So be it. But don’t let me or anyone else turn you into this. You’re a healer Anders. An advocate. You’re better than me so prove it.” The magic in the air thinned until it began to dissipate and Marian squeezed Anders closer to her. She angled her body to block Anders’ from Fenris' line of fire. “He’s calming down Fenris. You can put the gun away.” Fenris narrowed his eyes, “I will not.” “Then at least don’t point it at us” Marian snarled, “Maker, Fenris you almost killed him.” “A pity” he stated, “The almost, that is.” Marian glared, her icy eyes a fire.It was then that Anders finally came back to himself. His body learned heavily against Marian’s for a moment before he separated himself with a small grunt. He took a step back and Marian mirrored him. An agonizing moment filled with tangible tension stretched out between the three present. Anders eventually glanced up, his eyes sunken as if he had aged years. “I apologize. Despite my anger, it is never my intention for Justice to become something he is not. Even if the situation deserves it. I came here to let you know what you have done and to tell you that I can’t be a part of your life when you have caused so much destruction in mine. I’m begging you Hawke to please stop these articles. Please, if you hold any part of our friendship...any part of me of some worth just stop.” Marian hesitated. She could feel Fenris’ eyes on her back and Anders gaze bearing into the core of her. She should stop, she knew that, just as she knew she was betraying the memories she held of Bethany. However, there was a part of her, one which was all consuming, that demanded she continue forward. A part that urged her to ride out this story to the end and deal with the consequences after. And then there was that hidden part of her that fixated on the defeated slope of Fenris’ proud shoulders, the shadows beneath his vivid eyes, and the tired planes of his face. He deserved his story told, did he not? He deserved his justice. “I can’t.” she finally whispered. The words fell heavy into the air and left a sour taste in her mouth. Marian could see the moment Anders went from hope, to sadness, to finally settling onto a hollow acceptance. He had always been terrible at hiding the way his emotions played out in his eyes. He looked away, “I see. I guess this is goodbye, Hawke. I loved you, you know? I had thought that maybe-but no I see now that I was nothing but a story for you.” Marian wanted to disappear. Her fingers felt cold.Anders’ eyes flicked to Fenris, “And I suppose I should say goodbye to you as well Fenris. Theron never suited you by the way. You're no friend of mine but I’d watch your back, you’ve just seen how much Hawke values her friends.” Fenris stiffened, “It is fortunate then that Hawke is no friend of mine.” “I guess it is.” Anders mumbled. He gave one last haunting look towards Marian before slipping out the front door and closing it softly behind him. He left silence and a heavy air behind him. Marian sighed heavily and walked slowly to the staircase situated just beyond the foyer. She sat down without any grace and then finally removed the glamour from the roof of her mouth. While her disguise shifted back to her own appearance Fenris stalked over to the stairs.“You kept his true nature from me.” , he accused. Marian looked up at Fenris, her eyes sunken, “It was none of your business. Would you like it if I went around telling everyone your dirty secrets? You can tell me all you want that those stories you’ve given to me were about other slaves but you and I both know they are too detailed to be anything else but your own experiences.” Fenris’ shoulders grew taunt, “This is not about me. My “dirty secrets” as you say do not endanger anyone. That abomination is allowed to walk free and it is only a matter of time before he harms all those around him.” “Ander is the most gentle man I know.” Marian defended, “He could have fought back against you- hell he just stood there when you tried to fucking shoot him. Which, what the hell? Have you just been walking around everywhere with a gun?” “I am an escaped slave on the run from the Tevinter Imperium, of course I have.” Fenris growled, “Do not distract from the subject at hand. Anders is dangerous and you should not have let him walk out that door.” Marian stood up, “Don’t tell me what I should or should not have done, Fenris. And what about you? You let him walk out too.” “Fasta vass”, Fenris snapped, throwing his hands up in the air, “Would you have still helped me if I had stopped him?” Marian paused for a moment. Would she have still helped Fenris if he had actually managed to harm Anders? Kill him? She liked to think that she wouldn’t but there was that dark part of her that whispered she would have continued pressing forward. Fenris, however, did not need to know that. “No” she lied, “I wouldn’t have but that didn’t stop you from trying to shoot him so your reasoning makes no sense.” “I was simply reacting to the situation as needed” , Fenris defended himself, “He had gotten his demon under control so I no longer felt the need to waste my ammunition on such a foul creature.”Marian crossed her arms, “Sure.” The two remained silent, eyeing each other. Marian’s eyes flickered about Fenris’ face taking in the downward turn of his full lips and the deep furrow between his strong brows. She had become very familiar with that furrow over the past three months and over time found it oddly endearing. At the moment, she was far too furious to consider it anything but an annoyance. With a long drawn out sign she let her arms fall back along her sides, “We don’t have time for this. What’s done is done. We can either spend the rest of the night bitching at each other or we can get to work and see what your “friends” have been up to. Which would you prefer?” “They are not my friends.” Fenris growled. “Yes, I know. According to you no one is. So? What will it be?” Marian waited, exhausted, while Fenris took his time to answer. Eventually he also let out a long sigh, “So be it. We will speak on this later for now let us hear what has been said.”
“Alright” Marian breathed, “ I’ll grab my purse. Follow me to my office and we can get started.” Fenris followed behind Marian two steps and to the left as always. The air around them continued to be tense and it made the silence in the house all the more prevalent. Marian fought the constant urge to look over her shoulder and check to see if Fenris was in fact following her and if his gun was nestled back in the holster under his jacket. Now that she knew he had it, the thought of him pulling it on her nagged at her. He hadn’t hesitated in firing it earlier when he was threatened so what was stopping him if he decided she was a danger.Marian gritted her teeth and forced herself onward. Her office was situated on the main floor and therefore the walk was in reality short. She wrenched open the office door and flicked on the light. The room was a decent size, littered with papers and old coffee mugs she hadn’t brought back to the kitchen yet. A desk, complete with a computer monitor and comfortable computer chair, was the focal point of the room. A pull out couch rested against the left wall with some old quilts tossed across the back lazily and a coffee table with a filled ashtray and old cigarette butts in front of it.Marian motioned towards the couch, “Have a seat and we can get started.” Fenris had already been sweeping his gaze about the room taking in the mess and appreciating the lack of windows. He gingerly walked over to the couch, inspected the surface, and then sat down while somehow still appearing on the alert. While he situated himself, Marian placed her purse on her desk and sat down. She turned her monitor on and then fished out the recorder she had Sandel link to his enchantment. It should have been recording since the moment Marian handed off the flowers. She would listen in on any current conversations that were being had before going further back to the start. She held her breath after hitting play and then frowned in disappointment as she was greeted with silence. She looked over at Fenris who raised a single brow in question. “They aren’t talking right now” she explained, “But we can go to the start of the recording and anything they said should be on here.” Fenris nodded but remained silent. There was a tenseness to the outer corners of his eyes that betrayed his nerves but Marian refrained from asking him how he felt. Fenris would only take it as her babying him- pitying him. The elf was too damn proud. She went to the beginning of the recording and held her breath before hitting play. That vile woman’s voice instantly filled the room and Fenris became so still he was but stone. “What a waste of time.” Hadriana sneered over the recorder, “Those Feredlens are always such meek little mice.” Marian’s cheeks reddened but she continued to listen in silence as the sound of walking and other indiscernible noises continued. Finally there was the sound of a door closing. “Go put those over there” Hadriana ordered, “Such, vile smelling things. Not to mention such an eyesore.” “Yes, mistress.” the soft, meek voice of the slave girl from that morning replied. “Now then” Hadriana continued, “If the Fereldens are aware of our presence in the Free Marches it is certain the little wolf must know we’re here.” “I would agree, Magister.” Mairan did not recognize that voice however it was deeply male.“Hopefully” Hadriana continued, “We will not have to wait in this horrid place much longer. However, just in case we will continue with our plan. I was told that the shipment of slaves has already been delivered?” “Yes, Magister.” “Good, then we will make our way down to the Wounded Coast and wait for him there. Danarius’ pet is painfully predictable. Once we let it spread that there is a slave operation being held there it will be in his nature to show. When he does, we’ll be waiting. Danarius will be pleased with the fresh slaves as well. Good slaves are becoming so hard to come by.” “That they are.” Marian flinched when there was a sudden, loud crash over the recorder followed by a small gasp. “You idiot girl” Hadriana snapped. The sound of flesh hitting flesh sounded clearly over the recording, “Go throw them away and clean up this mess immediately.” “Yes, mistress. This slave begs for your forgiveness, mistress.” It then became obvious that the sound was in fact the vase of flowers falling. Marian listened in frustration to the process of the mess being handled and the flowers being thrown away in some other room. She cursed under her breath. They had gotten some valuable information but there could have been so much more. “I’m sorry Fenris” she started turning to peer at him, “It seems-” Marian paused. Fenris had already stood from his place on the couch and had his back turned to her. His shoulders were hunched and he vibrated with palpable rage. “Fenris?” “That bitch” he growled from deep in his throat, “I knew she would come but to think she has already been here for so long. I will tear her throat out.” Marian’s mouth went dry, “Fenris. I know you’re angry and I don’t know everything about what’s going on here but if you were listening you would have heard that they are ready for you. It would be best to stay low and wait this out.” Fenris whirled around, eyes flashing, “You would have me stay here while she roams free? You would have me act as if I do not know a “shipment” of slaves is being held mere miles from here?” “I know people in the force” Marian reasoned, “I can call and let her know about the slave den. As for the rest, Hadriana is here on diplomatic immunity. Personally, I don’t care about that but it will make dealing with her all the more difficult. She could be asked to leave once the slave den is found by the authorities and then we won’t have to worry about laying low.” “She does not get to leave” Fenris hissed, “I want to tear out her heart.” Marian recoiled, “I understand that you’re-” “No,” Fenris interjected, “You do not understand. You could not possibly understand. That, woman…” “What, Fenris? What about that woman?” Marian watched as Fenris began to pace back and forth across the room, “She is Danarius’ apprentice. She would hound my sleep and deny me meals. I was but a toy for her that she would try and break only to mend when Danarius required me. There is none I despise as much as her except for my previous master. I refuse to allow her to live. I need to leave now before she has time to escape.” “Okay” Marian whispered while her mind whirled in an attempt to get Fenris to stay. She didn’t have time to think about what Fenris’ confession implied. She needed Varric. Varric, could get him to stay.“I’ll come with you” she acquiesced, “But why don’t we get Varric first. He knows a lot of people and I’m sure they could help us-”
“There is no time” Fenris growled, “I leave now.” Marian cursed as Fenris stormed out of the office. She quickly grabbed her purse and followed after him, “Okay, just at least tell me you have something I can use to defend myself?” Fenris stopped so suddenly that Marian nearly ran into his back. He fished his gun out of his holster and handed it to her. It felt too heavy in her hands and she had no idea how to use it.“What about you?” Something icy grabbed at Marian’s heart when Fenris finally turned to look her in the eyes. She had never seen someone so bloodthirsty-his brilliant, green eyes shown with a fever that robbed him of reason. “Trust me”, he spat, “I will not need it. Not for her.” With that he left the manor, Marian speechless and on his heels.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

She was here. Fenris must have said something to Hawke. He vaguely remembered her shouting and giving her his gun but the exchange remained on the edge of his consciousness. He knew they were driving-but there was nothing but a buzzing in his skull. Hawke was talking. She always talked and Fenris always listened but now her lips moved and there was no noise. His eyes peered at the clock on her car radio. It had already been three minutes since they left. Three minutes that Hadriana could have used to escape. Thoughts of her hands, pale with long stiletto nails, haunted his mind. Hands which had soiled every inch of his skin. Hands that tried to tear him apart only to mend and start over again. Had forced pleasure from his body when he wanted none and had forced him to give pleasure. Flashes of them on his cock plagued him when he tried to sleep at night. Of Hadriana riding him, forcing him into her body. He remembered the waves of electricity that she would force across his skin until he begged her to stop. The draining of his blood to fuel her own magic when Danarius remained unaware . And of course how she would ignite the lyrium in his veins to bring forth a white hot pain of which was indescribable. Yes, he was going to tear her heart out before her eyes and crush it. Hawke could never understand. Ten minutes now. They were moving too slow. He must have said so out loud since Hawke swore and accelerated. Her car lurched and the engine complained but she did not relent.Thirteen minutes of the buzzing in his skull.
Fourteen of the ringing in his ears.
Fifteen of the thundering of his heart.
Twenty of the rage which blinded his eyes.
Too slow. They were moving too slow. Twenty six minutes had passed when the car stopped. Fenris looked out the window for the first time since getting into the vehicle. They had parked on the outskirts of an array of old docks. Warehouses loomed, the sun casting long shadows of them like sickly fingers, and not a soul was in sight. “It was used for a while for shipping but gang activity and the black market forced normal, everyday people to abandon it.” Hawke explained, “The whole area is actually the Wounded Coast so I’m not sure where they are staying. Probably in one of the warehouses.” Fenris gritted his teeth and swung the car door open. The smell of ocean water and an unidentified stale scent filled the air. The sound of the car door opening and then closing echoed when Hawke excited the vehicle. Fenris closed his own.“We should be smart about this”, Hawke urged. Fenris did not want to be smart. He did not want to be safe. Safety had gotten him nowhere in the past.He pressed forward, stalking towards the nearest warehouse with Hawke on his heels. She was shouting at him but once again it was drowned out by that ever present buzzing. One warehouse was empty and then the second. The third smelt of fish and not of blood magic. But yet, when Fenris began to approach the fourth the lyrium in his veins itched. He paused, taking in the decrepit building and knowing that she was in there. A feral grin stretched across his face. Soon, he would hold her heart in his hands. The buzzing stopped.“This is it”, he said. Hawke stood at his side with his gun in hand, “How do you know?” “I can feel the blood magic beneath my skin. This place smells like death. It is like a disease. Follow me and do as I say if you wish to live. Do not hesitate to kill as they will not hesitate to kill you.” Hawke’s already pale face drained further of color but she nodded, her eyes determined, “Right. Anything else I should know?” “Hadriana is dependent upon blood magic” Fenris spat, “It is likely she will summon demons to her aid.” “Great.” Hawke said dryly, “Nothing like a few demons to bring excitement to the day. Do you have more bullets than what’s in this clip?” Fenris did not answer but silently passed her three more clips of ammunition he kept attached to the straps of his hidden holster. It was time. He had his own demons to kill. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………..Fenris was not in his right mind but Marian had no idea what to do except follow in his footsteps. Interesting that this was the first time he let her be at his back-he was truly being led by bloodlust. She should not have driven him to the Wounded Coast but knew if she hadn’t he would have gone without her. At least this way she could try and keep him alive and as much as she hated to think about it if things went south she could always leave. Something in her chest grew tight but Marian did not have a death wish and it seemed that Fenris was leading her towards one. The closer they got to the old warehouse the harder Marian’s heart beat against her chest. It almost felt as if it would break through her sternum and she forced herself to breathe deeply. Her hand clutching the gun shook and her knuckles were drained of color. Fenris stopped just outside the door, squared his shoulders, and without a word to her forced his way in. Marian stared into the open entrance way, the dark warning her to not enter, but just like Fenris she steadied herself and took her first step forward into the unknown. It was silent and dark. Unbearably silent considering the risk that awaited them. Marian’s eyes flickered about the main room, trying to spot any potential threats but she saw none. Instead there was rusted machinery, dirty windows that let in streaks of light, a jungle of old metal containers, and the ever present scent of rat droppings. It mirrored the scene of a horror film and her skin grew cold.“No one’s here”, she said but Fenris continued to stalk further into the building. Cursing under her breath Marian followed, “Fenris, just listen to me, there is no one here. I know you think-” Marian’s words died on her tongue. They had turned a corner, into a new room, and entered hell. Blood. Death. So much blood and death. Marian wanted to throw up, she wanted to scream, or wail at the scene in front of her. She wanted to sleep and wake up to find this was just a sick dream. Mutilated bodies littered the floor surrounded by pools of drying blood. Dead eyes pleaded at Marian and their faces, twisted in the agony, would be branded into her mind forever. And Maker, there were children. All of them were elven and set aside like trash. Marian’s body felt numb, her stomach turned, and she gagged but nothing came up. “This is-” she tried but her words tapered off.“Behold” Fenris growled while making a sweeping gesture, “The glory of the Magister’s. Hadrianna is afraid to have used so much of her resources.” “Resources?” Marian whispered her vision swimming, “These are people.” “No” Fenris looked at her without really seeing, “They are slaves to be used as their Master wishes. Turn back if you wish but I will press on.” Marian shook her head, “No, we need to do this...I see that now.” Fenris nodded and prowled forward towards the next room. Once they stepped through the doorway they came face to face with a group of slavers. Marian cursed and dived behind a crate. Fenris however charged forward with a beastlal yell. Something that was far too guttural to be human. Marian watched, wide eyes as he appeared to vanish in a wisp of blue only to reappear behind one of the men. The lines on his skin burned bright as he plunged his hand in the man’s chest from behind. Marian struggled not to scream as she watched him pull out the man’s heart, blood coating the entirety of his arm and dripping out of the gaping hole. Fenris crushed it and let the pulp splatter to the ground. Marian’s mind whirled as she watched Fenris vanish again, leaving behind streaks of blue. He tore through the bodies of the men while grasping whatever organs and bones he could. Shots rang out as the men fired in desperation however they were unable to pin down where Fenris would appear next. One of the men went to flee, running straight towards Marian’s hiding spot. He came to a sudden halt when he saw her and aimed. Marian’s eyes widened and she lunged forward wrestling the gun from the slaver's grip. He had hesitated and she had not. With a coldness that could only come from the desire to live, Marian pressed her gun against the man’s forehead and pulled the trigger. The recoil forced her arm sideways and she nearly dropped her gun. Blood and brain matter sprayed her face and someone was screaming. It took her but a moment to realize it was her. Tears in her eyes and ears ringing, Marian stood up to survey Fenris' situation. There were only a few men left and with a sick twist to her stomach Marian pointed her gun towards one who charged to Fenris’ left. She shot once, twice, three times and the man fell in such a way that Marian knew he was dead before he hit the floor. By the time she had finished, Fenris was tearing out the spine of his final victim with a sick smile across his face. The room grew quiet while Fenris turned and appraised Marian defensively. “What the fuck, Fenris?” “We do not have time to discuss it, not until after I crush her heart.” Marian swallowed while taking in the room. Her instinct was to fight Fenris on this and get the answers she deserved but the carnage around her shouted louder that she needed to wait, “Fine but you owe me a fucking long explanation.” Fenris’ lips pressed into a thin line but he nodded his head in affirmation. With a firm shake of his wrists, he flicked remaining blood and viscara from his fingers before moving forward into the next dimly lit hall. Marian took one last look around her, fighting bile, before stepping carefully around torn body parts to follow,The next room was vacant but Fenris and Marian remained on guard. It was more spacious than the other rooms however with the lack of windows it was like a coffin. The only light came from a few flickering overhead lamps which buzzed incessantly. Marian swept her eyes about the dark, industrial space, attempting to search for any hidden foes. There were a series of cat walks above and she eyed the warily for movement. She rushed to keep up with Fenris and whispered in his direction, “I really don’t like this-”Before the words could finish leaving her mouth, a series of hisses echoed about the room and scorching pockets of light erupted beneath the concrete. Marian cursed as rage demons forced their way to the surface. Fenris wasted no time, bellowing as he tore into the one closest to him. The demon’s molten appearance shattered as his fist tore through it. Marian took a step back and counted; there were seven left. Her hand shook as she aimed her gun towards the one closest to the front and her arm nearly went wild from the aftershock as she squeezed the trigger and emptied her bullets into the creature. It wailed and broke into pieces of rock and fire.A voice, vicious and oily, rose over the clamour, “Why isn’t it the little wolf. So, very predictable. I see you brought a friend...foolish of you.” Fenris froze in his battle with another rage demon to peer up at the catwalks. Hadrianna stood far above, her hand gripping her staff tightly and her jaw clenched to the point of pain. Fenris snarled and took down the demon he was engaged with before shouting her name and phasing forward across the room. “Fuck.” Marian spat with the realization Fenris had just left her alone with the remaining two rage demons.“Fuck you Fenris” she yelled while franictically reloading. The rage demons both fixated on their nearest target, her, and Marian screamed while she shot frantically at them. Several of her shots missed however enough managed to hit the nearest rage demon and it broke apart just as the others had previously. The second managed to swipe at her and white hot pain erupted across Marian forearm as she attempted to block the attack from her face and chest. The smell of burnt flesh made her gag and the taste of blood flooded her tongue as she accidentally bit down on it in her pain. The demon prepared for its next strike and Marian’s hands trembled while she tried to back away and reload at the same time. Her heart raced and her legs felt as if they would collapse. She feared she would piss her pants. This was it, she thought, as she stared into the soulless eyes of the creature before her. She was just not fast enough or experienced enough to save herself. A part of Marian was relieved she wouldn’t die as a boring, old woman but the greater part of herself lamented that she would no longer be able to live among those she cared for. Bethany and her friends flashed before her mind. Anders as well-she would never be able to truly apologize to him. Then blue. That pale ethereal blue seeped through the rage demon's chest along with Fenris’ clenched fist. Marian gasped as the demon broke apart and revealed Fenris behind it. They made brief eye contact and Fenris’ eyes flickered down to the wound across Marian’s forearm before he went back to his war path. “Fenris” she whispered but with the way he moved, full of deadly vengeance, there was no way he would hear her. In truth, he hadn’t truly heard a thing she had said since they left the estate. Mairan watched, feeling useless, as Fenris phased up into the catwalks, trails of blue smoke following him. Hadriana scrambled backwards and clutched her staff to her chest. She raised a pale hand as if to summon more demons to her aid but Fenris was already there. His hands clawed into the flesh of her shoulder and Hadriana screamed as it was torn away. Her staff clattered against the metal platform of the catwalk before tumbling off the side and landing with a crack upon the warehouse floor. Marian could see Fenris’ twisted features from her spot below as he prepared to sink his fist into Hadriana’s heart. She squirmed, face pale, “Wait! I have information for you!”“Danarious’ location?” Fenris snarled, “I don’t need it, he will come to me.” “No”, Hadriana begged, “You have family! I can tell you her name but first you need to promise you will let me live.” Fenris paused, his hand still lit that startling blue, before he relaxed slightly, “Tell me.” “Do you promise to let me go?” He nodded and Hadriana’s face melted into relief. She took a few deep breaths, “You have a sister. Her name is Varania and she works as a tailor.” “Not a slave?” Fenris whispered. “No.”  Fenris furrowed his brow, “I see.” Marian gasped as his fist lit up once again and he plunged into Hadriana’s chest. The sound of her heart squelched as he crushed it in his hand and tossed it to the ground. Hadriana’s body slumped forward as if a slab of meat.Fenris took a moment to stare at her body before causally making his way down. He didn’t bother to clean the blood from his hand. As he neared, Marian found her voice, “You lied to her.” It was the wrong thing to say as Fenris whirled around to face her, his eyes wild and face contorted. He took two threatening steps until he was nearly nose to nose with her. “Have you not seen what she has done? What her magic did?” Marian took a step back, “Yes, of course I have but you killed her in cold blood.”Fenris snorted, “You know nothing.” “Apparently not.” Marian hissed and gestured to the remains of the rage demons around her, “Were you even going to tell me about your little trick?” “Now is not the time” Fenris snapped, “I-” He faltered and ran a hand through his hair, streaking it with red, “I need to think.” He pushed past her and made his way towards the exit of the room. Marian turned and shouted after him, “You can’t just leave! You don’t even have a car.” Fenris continued forward without any response and Marian stood rooted in place, watching as his figure disappeared through the door.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

With Fenris gone, the warehouse became so oppressive that Marian felt as if her lungs were compressed. A weight had settled on her chest as she surveyed the room and took in the remains of the soldiers she had killed. Her skin crawled, the blood drying on her hands and face itched, and her arm was sore from the gun’s recoil. She dropped the weapon to the ground with a resounding thud and slid to her haunches while gripping her hair. Her eyes fixated on the blurred ground below her, tears sliding down the bridge of her nose to stain the cement. She was officially a murderer. Anger simmered in her gut. She was a murderer but it was Fenris’ fault that her hands would never be clean again. She cursed him before struggling to her feet and grabbing Fenris’ gun off the floor. Before leaving the room, Marian dug into her jean’s pocket to retrieve her phone. She turned on the camera and, disgusted with herself, took photos of the scene before her. She did the same as she stumbled through the warehouse. Pausing to snap pictures of the elves that had been drained of their life to fuel Hadriana’s magic. Through it all, Marian had gone numb, while she made sure to get close ups of the mutilated corpses of the several children that lay like trash on the floor. The flash lit up their gnarled appearance, their bloated and purple faces with dead fish like eyes. It was nauseating. Satisfied, Marian finally walked out of the warehouse and into the fresh, sea air. Despite this, she could still smell blood as if it had homed itself in her very senses. She needed a bath. With trembling fingers and laden steps towards her car, Marian dialed Aveline. Her friend picked up just as Marian was turning on her Buick. “Hawke?” Aveline’s strong voice was a godsend and Marian bit on her bottom lip to keep herself from crying. She took a deep breath, “You need to send out a patrol to the Wounded Cost. Go to the warehouse labeled “9” there have been several murders.” Silence. “Hawke..Marian...what did you do? What have you gotten yourself into this time?” Marian’s hands shook while she hit the end call button. She turned her phone off to keep Aveline from calling her back. Listlessly, she drove back into town and stopped before the Circle of Kirkwall in surprise. She gripped her steering wheel until her knuckles turned white however put her vehicle in park, pulled out hand sanitizer to clean her hands and face of any remaining flecks of blood, and walked up the steep stairs to the entrance. Two Handlers stopped her before the double doors.“Name, purpose, and permit.”Marian swallowed, her throat was so dry, “Marian Hawke. I’m here to see my sister Bethany Hawke.” She reached into her pocket to retrieve her wallet and pull out a card, “Here is my permit.” The two Handlers looked it over and Marian held her breath. It felt so...bizare that she, a murder, was standing in front of these two authority figures and they had no clue. Was this how apostates felt? The Handler handed her back her permit and then sent a cleanse over her, “Very well. You will have no more than thirty minutes and must meet in the specified rooms. We will be recording the entire conversation.”Annoyance flared up in Marian’s gut but she was too drained to even think of arguing. Instead she followed the Handlers, face devoid of any affect, while they directed her into the appropriate room. It was cold, with a simple, plain table one might find in a precinct’s question room. There were one way mirrors and a video camera in each corner of the room. The lights were dim and oppressive. Marian sat down on one of the worn metal stools while she waited for them to retrieve Bethany. Her hands started to sweat while she waited;she hadn’t seen Bethany in three years as she had no desire to see what was only a walking skeleton of her sister. But now...she needed her. If she could have just even one miniscule glimpse of Bethany’s sweetness she could recover from this.It was around ten minutes when the door opened and Bethany was led in. She was wearing simple brown robes and her dark hair lay plainly to her shoulders. Her face was the same delicate oval with doe eyes and full lips. However those eyes were blank and unseeing. Her mouth was too relaxed and demonstrated no hint of expression. Marian’s heart sank. She glanced at the choker around her sister’s neck that proudly displayed the mark of the Tranquil. Marian swallowed down the tightness in her throat, “Hello sister. It’s been a long time.”Bethany stared at her, unmoved, “It has been three years and four weeks.” “Right”, Marian whispered, “I’m sorry about that.” “Why?” Bethany’s voice was so robotic it hurt but Marian attempted to smile, “Because you are my baby sister.” “I am not.” Bethany responded, “You sister was left behind in the Fade. I am Tranquil. I am safe.” Marian’s face drained and she felt as if she was tipping when she jumped to her feet, “Shut up! Bethany, you are my sister! You will always be and I’m so sorry I failed you. If I could go back I would give anything to see you be free.” ‘I am Tranquil, ' Bethany responded, “I am free. How may I assist you?” Bile rose in Marian’s throat and she marched forward until she was face to face with her sister, “Shut up! Give me my sister back! I know you’re in there Bethany so please come back.” Bethany’s head tilted however she remained as blank of a canvas as before, “I am sorry. Bethany is no more. I am Tranquil. I am at peace. How many I-” Bethany was cut off as Marian howled and slapped her sister across the face hard enough to make her head turn to the side. The sound echoed in the little room and Marian could feel the sting of her hit against the palm of her hand. However, Bethany remained unphased as she turned to look at her sister once again; only a blossoming bruise revealed there had been any altercation.“I have upset you.” Bethany responded, “How may I assist you?” A large sob worked its way out of Marian’s throat and mumbling apologies she ran from the room. The Handlers let her go having seen the interaction and in shame she found herself back in her car and driving to her estate. In a panicked mix of emotions, Marian swung the front door of the estate open after haphazardly parking her vehicle. In a rage, vision blinded by tears, she turned on her laptop. Varric would be so disappointed in her but she could not let this rest a moment longer. Vision still blurred; she brought up the main blog page associated with Thedas Geographic. Varric gave her unlimited access some time ago as it was easier to respond to comments on the page however Marian knew he was going to regret trusting her by the end of her newest post. In great detail, omitting all names, she described the events that transpired less than a few hours ago. Then she linked her phone up to her computer and downloaded all her photos onto the page. None doctored. Let the whole world see what she saw today and let them understand what evil existed. Holding back bile and with shaking hands, Marian hit submit and instantly turned her computer off so she could not go back on what she had just done. This would of course ruin the mage underground further but where had they been for Bethany? Hiding like the cowards they often were. Maybe this would call them to action and Bethany could finally be avenged. Marian curled into herself and sobs racked through her body. She had hit her sister. Her poor defenseless sister that she had already failed in the first place. She was a murderer and a bitch. The sound of the front door slamming shut made her look up and tense in her chair. Aveline must have already found the bodies and was now coming to her to get the truth of what happened. Or maybe Varric already saw her newest post and was ready to take away all her privileges and hard work. She forced her head up and through swollen eyes faced Fenris. His face was blank but she could see a deep unsettledness in his eyes. He fidgeted in place before starting to pace back and forth across the room like a caged animal. Marian’s eyes followed him as if transfixed, “I wasn’t expecting you here.” As soon as she spoke Fenris whirled around to face her completely, “I did not expect it either but I told you I owed you an explanation.” He gestured to the markings on his arms, “What you saw today was the result of Danarius’ ritual. I do not know how these brands work however they grant me the abilities you witnessed today. Although I did not ask for this, I will acquiesce that they have been useful. That bitch, Hadriana was his apprentice. She would torment me, hound my sleep, deny me meals...I will not lie by saying I did not take pleasure in ripping her heart from her chest.”Still numb, Marian just nodded, “Okay, whatever.” Fenris froze and glowered at her, “Whatever? You think the ritual that plagued me with these brands and took all that I ever knew amounts to “whatever.” That what that bitch did is so inconsequential?"“Frankly” Marian responded, “I don’t give a fuck. I just killed people and I hurt my sister who has done nothing wrong in her life. I just want to feel something other than what I feel now.” Fenris paused and looked at her timidly beneath his bangs, “I...I can understand that sentiment.” Marian stood from her chair and traveled over to him until their faces were but a hair's breadth away, “You do, don’t you?” She raised a hand and softly drew her fingers down his pronounced cheekbones. Fenris stiffened but did not move away. “I want you to make it go away. I can make it go away for you. Please.” Fenris sucked in a sharp breath, “I-this would not be wise.” “I don’t care” Marian whispered, “I just don’t fucking care about anything right now.” She put another hand on Fenris' other cheek and with only a small amount of resistance from him pulled him that small remaining space forward so their lips touched. Mairain hummed into the kiss willing Fenris to respond and although he remained stiff at first eventually he parted his lips and deepened the kiss. From there it was like a switch had been flipped. Marian could barely remember leading Fenris up to her bedroom between rushed kisses and pawing hands. Her heart was hammering in her chest and all her nerves felt as if they were on fire. She tore at Fenris’ clothing as her bedroom door swung shut, still working her tongue in his mouth, while he cupped her ass in his hands. The stupid shirt was not coming off fast enough and frustrated Marian pushed Fenris back while scrambling to lift it over his head. Once she did, she was greeted with his olive, toned skin decorated by those silver brands in such a way that his lean muscle was accentuated. Fenris stood straighter, clearly uncomfortable, and Marian flung her arms around his neck and kissed him fiercely. Her head had started to feel fuzzy as Fenris peeled away her clothes leaving her bare. He pinched at her nipples and slid a tentative finger across her clit before circling the nub. It made Marian’s knees buckle and she managed to gasp out, “Bed.” She pushed him backwards until his knees hit the mattress and Fenris fell on his back. Marian scowled when she noticed he was still wearing his shoes and jeans and she quickly rid him of both. Now, both bare, Marian stopped just for a moment to take in the elf before her. His brands were a masterpiece and covered his entire body, including his cock which currently stood proud and at the ready. She licked her lips and not wanting to make Fenris self conscious by staring too long lifted her legs to straddle him. Chest heaving she looked in his eyes, the green was hardly visible against his dilated pupils. Licking her lips, she bent down and gave him one gentle kiss before grabbing his cock and lining it up to her entrance. Fenris watched, entranced as she slowly lowered herself on to him moaning at the stretch. She paused, hands resting on Fenris’ chest to gather her breath before starting him in the eye while she lifted herself up with her thighs and lowered herself back down. The pace was brutal and exactly what she needed. Her mind was nothing but pleasure and filled with the sounds of their fucking. Fenris jackknifed his own hips up to meet her thrusts and it hit something so deep inside of her that Marian nearly screamed and saw black. She could hear herself begging him to go faster and deeper however it was as if she was outside her own body. Then she felt that tightness in her lower stomach and the tingle at the base of her spine that warned her of her oncoming orgasm. She gasped and moved her hips hard. Fenris also had to be nearing his climax as his thrusts had become desperate and erratic and deep moans flew from his mouth. She could feel his heartbeat hammer beneath her hands and watched his face as his mouth fell open. With a whine he came, his brand flashing just once, and then slowly rolled out the aftershocks with his hips. Marian continued to work herself fiercely on top of him before he softened and after three more rolls of her hips her mind went blank as her intense orgasm washed over her. Fenris’ and Marian’s labored breathing was the only thing heard in the otherwise silence of the room. Marian peered down at Fenris and a jolt of shock hit her as she witnessed his face so soft and vulnerable. His eyebrows were relaxed, eyes wide in an almost sense of wonder, and his mouth slightly open. It was the look of someone not just blissed out from good sex but of something too close to...well she didn’t even want to think of the word. Not when she had just used his body for her own distraction.Marian got off him with a slight wince. It had been a while since she had sex and Fenris’ girth had been impressive. Without a word she started collecting her clothes and dressing while tossing Fenris’ his own. He watched her hesitantly, confusion clear on his handsome face. “Did...did I do something wrong.” he whispered. Marian’s chest tightened at the vulnerability in his voice.“No” she responded, “It was great and was just what we both needed but now we both have to get back to reality. I think you should get dressed and go back to the safe house. I’ll call you tomorrow.” Fenris froze for a moment before silently dressing. He paused at the doorway, “You remind me of them sometimes. It is ironic.” Marian couldn’t look at him. At the sound of her front doors closing she sank back onto her bed and cried.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Fenris could still feel her hands on his skin and the warmness of her inner walls around his cock the day after. Her dismissal made him feel hollow at his core but he was grateful his mind was too occupied to think of Hadriana and his supposed sister. It was not as if this was the first time Fenris experienced causal sex (it had been a slight against Danarius during his new found freedom) nor was it the first time that he used his body to get something he wanted. But yet, with Hawke there was that persistent, nagging feeling of hurt and regret. He could not figure out why and he did not want to search himself too deeply to put a true name to it.He was trying to sleep while his mind whirled with thoughts of some faceless, nameless sister, and Hawke’s warmth when his phone rang. Fenris’ stomach clenched and he held his breath as he checked the name on his caller ID. A breath of relief escaped his lips as he saw it was only Varric. “What do you need, dwarf?” There was a moment of silence on the line before Varric cleared his throat, “Look, Fenris.”Fenris stiffened, Varric rarely used his name and only when something bad happened. “There is a situation” he continued, “I don’t know what she was thinking and she isn’t answering her phone and not at the estate but Hawke posted on the blog. She wrote about everything the two of you did yesterday; in detail. And Fenris, she posted pictures...they were disturbing to put it lightly.” Fenris’ lips pressed into a straight line and he fought against the sour taste in his mouth. “Did she mention my name?” “No” Varric answered, “She at least had the control to omit that. She did mention the name of that magister and she wrote about that little trick of yours. I’m sorry Fenris.”“Fasta vass” Fenris hissed and rose to his feet, heart pumping and sweat breaking out across his brow, “ you need to take it down.” “Way ahead of you” Varric stated, “but it was up for hours and the damage was done.” “Futuo” Fenris growled, “That selfish bitch. I’m going to...” He trailed off in a stream of curses. “Look” Varric interjected, “Obviously Hawke wasn’t in her right mind. I understand why you're pissed, I am too, but right now we need to figure out where she went before we can even start to fix this. You’re not the only one affected-the mages are under fire right now and there are Handlers everywhere. People are terrified. Hawke may have just started conflict here between mages and common folk that we haven’t seen before.” “At least some good came out of this” Fenris bit out. Varric’s long sigh was audible over the phone, “Now really isn’t the time for that. I’m going to ask our friend Aveline to keep an eye out for Hawke and I need you to stay put for now. I’m hoping some of my informants might know something but it’s a long shot. When Hawke disappears it is nearly impossible to find her. Shit; this mess aside I hope she’s alright.” Fenris clenched his jaw, “This involves me and I will not sit idly by.” “Elf-” “No,” he spat, “I refuse to let others control my fate. I will look for Hawke as well.” “And if you find her?” Varric asked hesitantly. Fenris ran a hand through his hair, “I will not know until it happens.” Varric sighed again, “Just promise me you at least won’t kill her.” Images of Hawke, face awash with pleasure, flashed through Fenris’ mind’s eye. The way she had touched him, kissed him, and the sound of her moans came unwillingly. Fenris swore under his breath. “I can promise you I will not kill her but I can not give you more than that.” “Well” Varric acquiesced, his voice laden with fatigue, “I suppose that’s something. I need to go, call me in an hour and if you find her, call me immediately.” Fenris agreed and hung up. He sat back down on his bed and squeezed the bridge of his nose between his thumb and pointer finger. Conflicting emotions ran through him and made his stomach churn. He suddenly felt so very tired. Shaking his head and squaring his shoulders, Fenris grabbed his worn jacket and placed his phone in the pocket before heading out the door. He would find her.…………………………………………………………………………………………………..She regretted everything but it was too late to take it all back. She hated herself for using Fenris when he was just as vulnerable as herself and she was beyond disappointed for betraying Varric’s trust. Marian leaned back against the driver’s seat in her parked Buick and stared at nothing. She had driven all night to get out of Kirkwall and halfway to Wildervale. Her phone rested on the passenger seat, still turned off. Marian had never been one to run away from anything. But yet, her insides twisted when she thought of facing her friends, addressing her mistake with Fenris, and of course owning up to the consequences of her blog post. Publishing the photos of those poor elven victims was what left the strong sour taste in her mouth. She had disrespected so many innocent dead to simply force others to feel the terror she had. To be relevant even if they didn’t know who the author was. Marian knew she always struggled with the need to control the decisions and perceptions of others, it made her feel important, however this had gone too far. Varric and Fenris had to hate her now-Anders probably wished she was dead. And poor Bethany...she may be a husk but she had failed her.Groaning so deeply from her throat that the vibrations rumbled in her chest, Marian reached over to her phone. She counted to ten before turning it on and winced as it chimed excessively from missed calls and texts. There were sixteen from Varric and Marian selected his contact to call back. It rang once before he picked up. A beat of silence proceeded and Marian cleared her throat, “Hey, I’m assuming you saw the post.” “Shit, Hawke, I thought something happened to you. Yeah, I saw and I took it down. Where are you?”Marian shut her eyes, she should have known Varric was more worried for her than angry, “I’m halfway to Wildervale but I’m going to turn around. I’m so sorry Varric, I don’t know what I was thinking. I fucked up and I know I can’t take it back.” She took a moment to collect herself, “Is Fenris okay?” “He’s not happy and I couldn’t convince him to stay put but I don’t think he’s going to be tearing your heart out anytime soon. You’re going to need to explain that trick of his more to me once things calm down. It’s the mages and Handlers that are a shitfest right now. People are scared and disturbed by what they read and things have escalated quickly. Everyone is holding their breath for the Mage Underground to respond, myself included.” Marian cursed, “Have you heard from Anders?” “No.” “Okay” Marian responded while she turned the engine of her car on and put it in drive, “I’ll reach out to him but we did have a bit of a falling out. I’m going to try and get a hold of Fenris as well while I drive back to Kirkwall. I probably won’t be back until late tonight or early morning.” “Get her as fast as you can Hawke” Varric said, “But be safe-like I said I don’t know what is going to happen but it’s not good.” Marian promised she would and ended the call. She could feel her heart racing while she drove and dialed Anders’ number. It went straight to voicemail and she left a message. Next, with sweaty hands, she called Fenris. It took three rings before he picked up. “Hawke.” His voice was stern and she winced. “Fenris.” “What the fuck did you do?” he snarled. Marian gripped her steering wheel with her free hand until the skin in her knuckles stretched, “Something fucking stupid. I’m sorry, truly. It pains me to say it but I know I fucked up and I’m on my way back to Kirkwall. I just talked to Varric and told him I would be there by late tonight or early morning.” A pause and then Fenris’ gravelly voice answered, “Where are you?” ‘Halfway to Wildervale.” “A part of me hates you.”Fenris’ statement in theory was off subject considering the conversation however to Marian it felt appropriate. “I know,” she whispered, “To be honest, for once I don’t blame you.” “But” he continued, “ Despite my efforts I cannot seem to hate you as much as I should. I have never seen myself as a fool however I suppose I would consider myself one now.” Marian’s shoulders relaxed, “I know we need to talk about what happened and what I did but it’s more important right now to try and fix the consequences. Will you help?”Another pause, “Against my better judgement you will have my aid.” Relief flooded through Marian and she released a breath she did not realize she was holding, “I can meet you at the safe house.” “Very well however I will not hide if the conflict comes to a head.” Marian bit back an argument, “Okay, I’ll see you tonight.” Fenris hung up and Marian tossed her phone back on the passenger seat, eyes trained on the road, and her jaw clenched tight. ………………………………………………………………………………………………..It was nearly 1:00 AM when Marian reached the safehouse. The streets were errierly empty and there was a sense of tension in the air. It was as if the city was waiting for some sort of catalyst that would finally bring everything to its peak- a catalyst that may have already started.Marian had called Varric when she got back in town, her voice groggy with exhaustion, and he stated he would meet her and Fenris back at the safehouse. Both of them had still not heard back from Anders. Marian paused in front of the safehouse’s door, fists clenched, but before she could knock on it was yanked open and Fenris stood on the other side. It startled her, a yelp just contained in her throat, and Marian scolded herself for forgetting the security cameras. “Hawke” Fenris stated plainly. He stared at her for a moment, a sense of awkwardness settling over them and Marian tried desperately to keep her focus on the task on hand and not how he had felt inside her. “Hey”, she said lamely, “Do you mind letting me in?” Fenris moved to the side before shutting and locking the door after Marian entered. The safehouse appeared the same as usual which seemed wrong somehow. So much had changed it only seemed appropriate that the environment around them should follow suit. Marian cleared her throat and pulled the gun from the waistband of her jeans to place it on the kitchen island, “Here, I’m guessing you want this back.” Fenris didn’t respond but followed her over to the kitchen and leaned against the island, arms crossed over his chest. Marian struggled to keep her gaze averted from his mouth. She could feel his eyes fixated sharply on her. Fuck this was ackward and not what they needed right now. “I know If said we needed to concentrate on what to do next but I can already tell we might need to just address the elephant in the room. “Fenris raised an eyebrow. “We fucked,” Marian continued, “It was good, really good, and I’m sorry I used you.” “I do not recall complaining” Fenris stated drily and Marian’s cheeks flushed. Fuck, she felt like a stupid school girl; what was wrong with her? He took a few steps forward until he was in her space. Marian finally looked up at him and was struck by that look in his eyes she refused to name. She swallowed, throat feeling dry, “Fenris…I’m sorry but I don’t know what to fucking do.” He turned his head to look away, “I do not either. I cannot stop thinking about that night; I find myself hating you for it but also...not.” Marian took a step closer, something twisting in her gut, but quickly jumped back when the front door clicked open. Varric stepped in, his face worn and Marian was thrust back into the emergency at hand. She hesitantly turned to face Varric, “I-I’m so sorry.” Varric shook his head, “Shit Hawke, I’m glad to see your face. We can talk about what you did later but right now I got some news from my informants for you both.” Marian bit her lip, “What did you find out?” “There is a lot of activity with the Mage Underground. They’re preparing for something big but I don’t know what yet.” Marian’s stomach dropped. Varric turned to peer at Fenris, “They also heard news of another Magister in the area.” Fenris stiffened suddenly, much more alert, “And?” “Its’ Danarius” Varric answered, “He’s here,”
