No power so effectually robs the mind of all its powers of acting and reasoning as fear.
- Edmund Burke -
=====================Thrór, king under the mountain, was starring at his grandchildren playing, from one of the balconies.
The sovereign was pondering.
The white witch of Lothlorien's forest had predicted the end of his line.
He did not like her, nor he fully trusted her.
Yet, he knew she told him the truth. She saw the end of his bloodline.
How is it possible?
His kingdom was prosperous. Erebor was thriving.
His son was healthy and strong, he had already two handsome young sons and his wife had recently given birth to a beautiful daughter.
Will my grandchildren produce no heirs?
Wealth and fortune come and go, he knew that ... yet.
The king was pondering. Why?
He needed to ensure that his line was going to continue.- Your majesty. – One of his advisors called his attention.
- The delegation from the Mirkwood has arrived. -
The Mirkwood elves…
Maybe he could ask them for advice…
Yet…
He did not quite like Thranduil.
However, if he had to choose between him and the white witch, he would have rather pick the elf king.
- Tell them I’ll be there shortly. – he needed to collect his thoughts and work out how to formulate his question.
Dealing with the elves had always required skillful diplomacy.
The dwarf began admire the many jewels that were adorning him, he loved to count them… the whole of his gold…
That day he made no request to the neighbouring king, they talked mainly about business exchanges between their kingdoms.
The sovereign needed more time to decide how to proceed.
Nothing is for nothing and he was sure that the immortal ruler would have demanded a costly payment for his good service.
He did not like to part from his precious treasure.
Thrór took his time, he counted his treasure, again and again, pondering on the situation while his grandchildren grew, while his fortune increased. Finally one day, years later, he confided his worries to the elf king and sought his advice.
As expected, his request caught Thranduil’s attention.
He was a curious creature he knew that, but it was also in his own interest to ensure that Erebor would endure long-lasting prosperity.
Not that the elegant sovereign of the wooden realm really enjoyed the company of dwarves.
However, the two kingdoms had greatly benefited from each other wellness and wealth.
The king under the mountain trusted that despite their differences the Mirkwood sovereign would have not let Erebor fall, at least for his own sake.
- There is someone… - his royal neighbour had told Thrór.
- Someone you know and trust? – he had asked a little too anxiously.
- An acquaintance of mine, let’s put it this way. -
- Tell me. – there was a hint of need in the dwarf voice.
A bit too much for his liking, yet he did not matter if he could get what he wanted.
Finally, there was hope that he might have been able to solve the problem that had begun to cause him many sleepless nights.
Stories told that a teardrop from a young witch that had yet to come to age would grant anyone that would drink it an offspring and Thranduil had ensured him those were not only mere tales.
His royal neighbour was going to look into it and let him know if an agreement could be struck.
A special arrangement that would have ensured the prosperity of Erebor for a long time.Years passed, as time never stay still.
The elf king held to his promise and a deal was struck, a secret meeting was arranged.
He had put the royal dwarf in touch with the witches and in payment for his valuable services he was promised some precious white gems that he very much desired. The king fear was that his grandchildren would have no heirs to continue the line of Durin, so in order to secure the continuity of his dynasty the ruler of Mirkwood had to arrange a meeting between the king under the mountain and the Witches' queen of Carn Dûm.Thrór prepared to travel to the sorceresses’ fortress to seal the deal.
However, another payment was necessary, the dame of the enchanted little kingdom demanded it, but it mattered not if the line of During could continue.
Also, the king was a clever trader, he had not yet paid the silver king of the wooden realm… as he saw it, dear Thranduil had time in his hands and could wait. The ruler of Erebor left his son in charge of his kingdom and travelled personally to meet the witch queen.
He took some of his advisors, some of his best warriors, his grandson Thorin and one of his aids, a young dwarf who the young prince had grown very fond of.
The delegation travelled to Carn Dûm to ‘purchase’ the prized drop that would have ensured the survival of the line of Durin.OOOOOOOOO
The attractive ruler of Carn Dûm had been very clear with the Mirkwood sovereign.
- One tear, one soul. – she had told him in her musical voice.
- I can guarantee him one heir to his kingdom. -
The charming elf had smiled confidently – That’s all we asked, and you will receive the payment as agreed… -
… and I will have my white gems of pure starlight.
- Do you trust this dwarf then, lord of Mirkwood? – a clever smile lit her features, she trusted no one.
- I trust his desperate need to get what he wants. I despise his greed. -
She pondered over his words and she was curious about the delegation that was coming to meet her.
- Is the young girl ready? – Thranduil asked, not that he really cared.
- I have chosen her and she will give what I asked. -
The elf king nodded as he sensed some resentment in her words.
- I need to remind you of the sacrifice she is making. – his coldness was upsetting her.
- The soul she is giving you is all her offspring … -
He nodded once more – It is for a good cause. -
She hated his lack of empathy. She hated him for putting her in that position.
She nodded herself keeping her emotions at bay.
One day you will pay, everyone does in time.
In time Thranduil, your arrogance will cause you to lose the only one still left to love you.
She knew for sure … the little girl, her chosen one had told her.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
The arrow is nocked, the aim is locked, the dart is fired and hits the target it desires.- Kilak_ki - We'd remember tonight for the rest of our lives -=====================================================The sun had just disappeared beyond the mountains line leaving the valley to the darkness. It was early spring and the days were already getting longer. However, nothing mattered to one young busy and excited dwarf. When his mother came to the room, he was still deciding what to take on the journey.- Supper is ready. Are you not coming? –She had asked entering the small bedroom that he shared with his brother. She had called him a couple of times, but he had not heard her.- Sorry, mum. I’ll be there in a minute. -His mother smiled warmly – I bet you will not sleep tonight. -She sweetly caressed the golden locks of her youngest son.A cheeky smirk lit his face.- I will miss you … -- Me too – he replied earnestly, still his excitement did not fade.It was going to leave the safety of Erebor of the first time in ages.He was so young when his family moved to the mountain kingdom and he could not quite remember anything beyond the city of Dale. That was going to be his first trip into the big world. The evening meal had been very happy and once they finished, they all sat together by the fire.- Think about it. If you had not saved the young brat, you wouldn’t have got this ‘free’ trip. –His eldest brother said half mockingly.- You should show more respect for your future king. – his father reprimanded him.- His grandfather is the king, it will be a long time before he can even dream to see the throne. -- Nili! – his mother rebuked him once more.- All right, all right … still, he is a bit of brat. -- No, he is not… you don’t know him really. – Vili said a little annoyed. He was true, maybe Thorin was a little spoiled… more than a little actually. At times he could be quite full of himself with other people, quite unreasonable in certain occasions however almost never with him.For some reason beyond his understanding, the young dwarf prince liked him, and it was not merely because he saved his life.He was certain of that.He was not actually even sure that he had really saved his life at all.He just had done what anyone else in Erebor would have done.A year earlier in Dale, someone had attacked the future king, a stranger, not one of the men of the town.An outsider, that no one new, had approached the prince while his guards were ‘distracted’.Young Vili just happened to be in the right place at the right time and he did not hesitate.Probably the assailant would not have succeeded anyway.Thorin was well trained he knew how to defend himself and his guards were very quick anyway. However young Vili's courage had not gone unnoticed. The dark-haired prince liked him and from that moment on Vili had become a special addition to the young prince entourage, a sort of ‘special’ adviser. He was ‘special’ because he was the youngest, just a year older than Thorin’s younger brother.Wherever the heir to the throne went, he was right behind him; and as his ‘newly acquired friend’ had grown very fond of him so did he.It was true that the young prince had quite a difficult character, at times quite impossible;however, it seemed that Vili was always able to break through to him and to get him to reason.Thorin was not just a brat as Nili had said, he had a good and generous heart, he was brave and clever. The ‘young adviser’ was sure that he would have grown to become a fantastic sovereign, one that anyone would have wanted to follow anywhere.Vili had made his family proud and he gladly accepted his new role next to the future monarch even though he meant that he had to abandon his apprenticeship with his father.Nali was one of the best jewellers in the mountain and both his sons had inherited his talent. However, his youngest son had to swap his artistic skills for the sword and began to train as a warrior. He had become one of the closest people to the prince and his trusted adviser so he could not escape the training.Vili trained every day with the prince and some of the top warriors in Erebor. It had been hard at the beginning, but the young dwarf had applied his unwavering positive attitude to every new task that was put in front of him and he had managed to conquer everyone’s favours. No one was questioning his place next to Thorin any longer.Vili’s family had moved from the Grey Mountains when he was little more than a toddler. He could barely remember it.Nali’s skills had quickly made him a more than welcomed addition to the Kingdom Under the Mountain. In the small village in the Grey Mountains where they lived, Nali and his wife were tolerated but never fully accepted in spite of him being born there. His father had died before he reached adulthood and he had no brothers. His mother had always been spurned by everyone in town, she was born out of wedlock and no one knew who her real father was;Nali’s grandmother had taken that secret to the grave.Nali’s mother was a beauty, although small in stature like any other dwarf, she had soft fair locks, no beard, charming green eyes and delicate elegant traits. However, those very distinctive features had brought her no luck as they had sparked even more rumours regarding her origins.Nali was quite tall for a dwarf and he had taken his mother deep green eyes however his features were not so distinctive…still, even if everyone liked his work he always felt at odd in his village. It all had changed once his family moved to Erebor, the mountain fortress was huge, no one was paying attention to him, they only focused on his craft. In there, he and his young family had found happiness. His handsome sons had grown to learn his skills and then young Vili had caught the attention of the royals.Everything looked well for his family. He could not ask for more. That evening Vili’s parents stayed up late sitting by the fireplace, while their sons went to bed. They both had an early start in the morning.OOOOOOOOOOThe royal company left the mountain in the early hours just after the sun had woken up.The blond dwarf was given a nice black and white pony and everyone in the group had a beautiful mount. Vili was impressed.Thrór wanted to display his wealth the young dwarf had noticed. Why?The delegation was formed by the king, two of his closest advisers, the young heir to the throne, Fundin and Vili as the prince's advisers and bodyguards, ten of the strongest warriors in the kingdom and few servants. The group leaving from Erebor was well equipped and they had plenty of provisions.Only the king and his advisers knew the real reason for the trip everyone else had been left in the dark. They travelled all day and then set camp once the daylight began to fall.Vili looked back at the mountain, "his mountain". His family was safe in Erebor.- Homesick already? – the prince asked.- No. -- We will be back before you know it. – Thorin whispered close to him sensing his friend’s mood. He is not a brat. The blond dwarf was happy to travel in the company of his friend. The following day they woke up just before dawn and again they travelled all day.The same happened the day after and the following. They got used to camp life. Early mornings most of the time and long days. However, they loved the evenings by the fire when old tales were told…epic battles and strong warriors filled the minds of the youngsters dreaming of becoming part of those ancients’ stories themselves.Youth gives you lots of energy and a mind for troubles, luckily the long journey kept the minds of the younger members of the group quite occupied and the elders did their best to make sure that there was no much room for fooling around. However, young minds are quick to plot any mischief. The young prince was desperate to get back at his bodyguard that kept a close eye on him and his friend not allowing any room for fun.A mischievous smile lit up Vili’s face once Thorin settled his plan.It was simply perfect.- If it goes wrong it’s your fault. -- Why? -- I am the prince. -- Get over yourself Thorin. – Vili laughed – If Fundin catches us you are no more a prince than I am. -- You cheeky … - he laughed as he tried to catch him, but Vili was faster.- Oh, the future king cannot even manage to discipline his adviser. – he mocked him again.- My adviser is an idiot. – Thorin complained a little annoyed.- A poor adviser for a poor king. – Vili laughed as he walked in front of Thorin still looking behind. He did not see Fundin approaching and he walked right into him.- Would both of you stop playing around and start to make yourself useful?! – the older dwarf grumbled.- I … I am sorry. – the blond youngster said sheepishly while his friend laughed.- Go and help the others to settle the camp. – he ordered.Vili glanced at Thorin.- I said go! - Fundin said louder.- Thorin… - the younger dwarf tried.- Once you grow a beard you can answer back. Now make yourself scarce. - the old warrior cut him off.- Go I’ll see you later. – Thorin told him before turning to Fundin.Vili could hear his friend arguing while he walked away.- You should not talk to him like that. – the dark-haired dwarf was not afraid to take on the beard warrior.- Maybe you should behave more like a prince then I will not need to pick on your adviser. – the older dwarf retorted. The young dwarf knew when it was time to keep quiet, he did not add a word. The next day Thorin’s plan was put into action.Fundin could not prove that it was one of the young lads that did it, but he was absolutely sure it was them. The poor dwarf had to walk all day long without his mount. The animal had run away early in the morning when he tried to climb on the saddle that had then fallen off making a huge noise that scared away the pony.Thorin did not manage to hide his smirk but Vili was a born actor. He remained inscrutable.- Next time he’ll think twice before he says anything to me or you. – the prince was quite satisfied. Not all their plans worked out and at times they both got caught and punished and prince or not Thorin got no special treatment. One evening Funding found Vili on his own by the river sulking a little after being punished, yet again. His friend was upset with him as well, as their latest trick did not work quite as expected and he had taken the blame.- What’s wrong? -- Nothing. -- Not so joyful, any more are we? -The young dwarf snorted while the old warrior sat next to him.- You are not here to create troubles with Thorin and have fun.You are here to protect him, to help him and advise him.If he will be a good prince and king in the future it is down to you as well.I am old but you will be with him for years to come. -- You are not old, Fundin. – he protested and the old warrior could read the worry in his voice.- Maybe but you should take your task more seriously, ‘cause he really listens to you. -Vili pondered on his words. He knew he was right.- I am sorry. -The old dwarf just looked at him.- I really am. -Vili was so young, he had been in the court environment only a year, he was expecting too much of him.Yet, he had already surprised him many times.- Just do your job the best you can. -- I will. - he promised earnestly. -- I believe you. – the old dwarf gave him one of his rare smiles. He knew the young lad felt his responsibility and his duty towards the future king, and he knew it was good to have him by Thorin’s side. After a while looking at the river in silence the youngster asked.- Can I ask you something? -- Aye. -- What’s wrong with the king? –- What do you mean? – The old dwarf was quite surprised by the question.Vili deliberated a little before talking. Was it really right for him to ask? To say something?- He always counts his gold and jewellery. -- That’s fine, we all count our possessions, no? And he is the king he has plenty, no? -- No, not the way he does. I… I do not mean any disrespect believe me, but I feel something is wrong. -Fundin looked at the boy thoughtfully, he had just given voice to some of his concerns as well.- Don’t worry laddie. I’ll keep an eye. -The blond dwarf nodded and left him to join again the campfire.Since that evening, he tried to keep himself and Thorin out of troubles and that took all his time. After all, being Thorin’s closest aid was a full-time job.OOOOOOOOOOOIt took them a month of constant travel to finally reach their destination. One late afternoon they climb over a hill and there it is was, the castle of the Witches’ Queen of Carn Dûm.It was a long, tall, light grey building nestled on the side of the mountain surrounded by fern trees. It looks almost as if it sprang directly from the rocks. It did not look daunting at all like the boys had imagined. It was more mysterious than scary with his high spires. They set camp in the valley below, they could reach the castle the next morning.Once more they all sat by the fire sharing the meal, chatting and singing songs.Everyone was quite happy as they all knew that the next day they would sleep in a proper bed.As they were sharing stories Vili thought he saw something moving in the bushes, so he went to investigate with one of Thrór's guards but they found nothing.Maybe he had been just one of the small forest creatures, nothing dangerous…However he had told both Thorin and Fundin and he kept an eye on the camp’s perimeter as long as he could, until sleep took him.In the morning he was one of the first ones to wake up before the prince and even before the old warrior; so, he was sent out to get some wood for the fire.He had already collected some small wooden sticks when he saw them. Two dark figures not much taller then him moving in the bushes. That time he was sure he was not a small animal, it was something else.He immediately dropped all the wood sticks and went on to pursue the “intruders”.Obviously, calling for help or even letting someone know what happened was totally out of question.I’ll catch you.He followed them deeper in the forest, not realizing that they were very much aware of him right from the start. In the game of cat and mouse, the 'predator' soon became the 'prey'.He could hear them laughing all around him. They were having fun with him.Maybe they were not a threat.Who are you? Where are you?He knew he was losing the game.Yet, somehow, he was sure that his pursuers were the same ones that had come to the camp the evening before.OOOOOOOOOOOSuddenly a sweet laugh echoed behind him.He turned quickly and he caught her looking at him hiding through the thick foliage. The young dwarf was not too sure of who or what she was… but it did not matter, because to him she was just sheer beauty. In his life he had not seen such perfection anywhere else. Her stormy eyes had easily reached his heart and they were not going to let go any sooner.Poor Vili did not quite understand what was happening, all he knew was that he wanted time to stretch to infinity never to leave that moment. So unaware he was that he did not realize that his deep dark eyes had pierced through her, in the same way, setting a new emotion on her soul. Those magnetic eyes had simply kidnapped her heart. However, she could see much further then him and she knew that from that moment on nothing would have been the same. She could feel the ripple effect of that chance encounter through time and space.Something deep was put into motion. She was not quite sure where it was going to take her.Yet as him she wished for that moment not to end.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
She was the enchanted castle...I was the forbidden throne...Right in the heart of theAlluring palace,Formidable once..!Now...Forever alone..!-Honey Bartwal -========================- Vili! Vili! - he was so lost in her traits that the voice seemed to come from a faraway dream. His head refused to reply, he wanted to remain there in that moment, never to leave.- Vili! - another voice called him again and it was getting near.He knew all too well that he might have been in troubles, but it did not matter because she was looking at him and she was as still as a statue lost in his eyes as he was in hers. Was it possible? Was she looking at him in the same way he was looking at her?Was her heart speeding as fast as his? Was... was she feeling...- Viliii! - they were too close. The blond dwarf was forced back to reality and as he turned to answer he was sure that when he was going to turn back again he would not have found her. That thought hurt him unexpectedly. What had happened? All he knew was that after that nothing was going to be the same.He had felt it deep inside in a part of him he did not even know it existed.- I am here! - he had to push those words out.- Damn it, Vili! - Thorin had almost reached him.- What got into you? You disappeared without a word. Nobody knew where you were! -His friend was clearly concerned and definitely annoyed. However, the younger dwarf was not looking at him his eyes were scanning through the thick foliage, desperately searching someone that was no longer there.I lost her.- Vili! - Thorin shouted just a few inches from him.- Thorin! - he shouted back irritated and upset for his loss.- Don't shout you made them run away! -- What?! Run away? Who? -- The intruders. - the blond dwarf snorted.- Intruders? -- Yeah, the same ones that were in at our camp last night, I saw them...I nearly caught them, and you made them run away. -- We didn't see anybody. -- 'Cos you made them run away. - Vili retorted.Fundin arrived in the middle of their discussion a little out of breath.- Stop arguing! -- You shouldn't answer back - he rebuked Vili.- And you! You should not have run ahead in the middle of the forest. -The blond youngster did not add a word, he had learnt when he had to keep quiet.- We needed to find him, did we not?- Thorin was not worried. The old warrior was not in a mood to argue with the young prince and he did not like the surrounding. The forest seemed thicker there, no sunlight was getting through the dense foliage.- Let's go back! - he growled at the youngsters. The black-haired dwarf was quite annoyed but instead of replying to his guard he decided to take it on his friend.- See what you've done, now he will be in a bad mood all day. - he whispered harshly.- I've done??? I was protecting all of you going after the intruders. -- I saw nobody. - he spoke at nearly an inch from Vili's face. However, the younger dwarf ignored his prince as his mind was still tangled in a dream that had lasted only the space of a moment. His eyes were avidly searching the forest until they arrived back to the camp.Where are you? Where are you hiding?Somehow, he felt that those stormy eyes were still following him. They packed everything very quickly and started the last part of their journey that was going to finally take them to their destination, the Witches' castle.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLlyal-Eresel, the queen of the witches was admiring her enchanted garden. It was a place of ancient souls that stretched into the forest and from there it spread its magic into everything that lived around it.It was a place for the creatures who dwell with the sweet sounds of moving water and birds songs and amid each green leaf and delicate petal, there were squirrels that darted and dancing birds.Few places in Middle Earth could compete with the luxurious beauty of the Carn Dûm gardens. That place brought her peace,… however for how long? How long is all this going to last?Even that heavenly place was destined to disappear. Her time, their time was ticking that was precisely what was tormenting her heart.Yet, everyone’s time is ticking... every hour, every day...Her 'guests' were going to arrive in the evening, the little one had already told her.Taking delicately a colourful flower in her hand she turned to her maid.- Where is she? - she was not really asking, she knew the young girl was not in the castle.- Sorry, my lady, I am not sure. I'll send someone to look for her. -The beautiful ruler of the enchanted kingdom narrowed her eyes, she let her spirit go and she was able to see her.The little one with another young one were in the forest, running free, playing games… hide and seek. She smiled but immediately felt a twinge in her heart. What am I asking of her?Yet she knew it was necessary, still, she regretted her decision even though she was going to go through with it.There was simply no other choice.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMiriel, the young one, was one of the youngest witches at the castle.Once, long ago, long before her time many witches were rooming the land. They lived freely and travelled across Middle Earth as they wished moving so fast that everyone used to say they were the wind itself. They were just one of the many races in Arda... but that was a long time ago. Then their number had begun to decline. The world they lived in was changing and the time of the witches was coming to an end. Most of the sorceresses had already moved to the castle many years ago only a few still prefer to live on their own and travel. All the young ones lived protected in the castle, sheltered from the outside world.Miriel had known for a long time that changes were coming. She could not quite see them, but she could feel them coming.Changes were going to sweep through Arda like the bitter cold winter wind that takes everything with it, and they were going to be harsh exactly like it was.Yet, after the unforgiving winter, spring always came bringing new hope. And so, it would have been, she knew, yet the details of what was going to come were scattered and she could not quite piece them together. She was young and she still had a lot to learn. Then one cold morning in the middle of winter she had woken up with a dream in her head.A dream that felt so real that she knew it was going to happen, it had filled her with happiness and trepidation. From that moment she knew her life was going to change, and she was going to be part of something much bigger than herself.Yet the edges of the dream were confused and she could not see clearly, she did not know what it meant. However, when the old Burgya asked her the reason behind her excited smile she had replied.- A dream, so real that I can feel it coming. -The old woman had smiled - What did you dream? - she was always so curious about Miriel dreams. The girl’s ever joyful face had become pensive as if she was trying to remember something that was already lost.- They are two sides of the same coin. - she finally said.- They who? -The young girl thought a little longer - I really don't know... I cannot remember. -- Then why are you so excited, little sister? -- 'cos they are important, and I love them. -Burgya was used to the enigmatic talk of the young girl, however, she never dismissed her words. The little one was a seer, one of the very few left and a powerful one.Although she was too young to understand everything she saw, her cryptic messages were always important. She had already brought many crucial insights to her queen.Later on, that day the old witch had told her ruler what young Miriel had told her and Llyal ponder for a long time about the meaning behind it wondering who what was going to come. From that day on that dream never left the young witch’s head and she kept on dreaming about it most nights.New details were added to the picture yet even if it was becoming clearer the meaning still eluded her.Shortly after king Thranduil, from the Wooden Realm in the Mirkwood forest had come to pay a visit to the queen. The clever sovereign of the forest had brought her a very interesting proposal, one that he knew she could not refuse. It was not a mystery to anyone that the witches population was shrinking, Carn Dûm was an impenetrable fortress that had protected them for many centuries, but for how long? The elf king knew that the witches needed new alliances to ensure their survival and they needed wealth to be able to pay for protection if needed. The deal that Thranduil had brought forward to the queen was going to ensure both.Yet such an important deal had its price.Llyal-Eresel took her time to think about it, to evaluate what she was going to sacrifice. She was wise, caring and understanding and these qualities had ensured her survival for centuries. She valued very much the lives of every one of her witches... every single precious life.Thranduil knew that a teardrop from a young witch that had yet to come to age would grant anyone that would drink it an offspring;he had witnessed such a miracle many centuries before. That was precisely what he had come to ask from the ruler of the enchanted realm: a teardrop. He had found someone very interested in its magic power, someone prepared to offer a profitable alliance and an interesting profit. It was a deal that the queen of the witches could not afford to decline and that left her with a heavy heart for a long time. However, Llyal was an old soul and she knew the elf almost better than himself; she had watched him change through the years. She had witnessed his spirt turn sower with the death of his wife. His world was turning smaller and darker, but he could not even realize it.Surprisingly, despite her situation, the witch did not allow herself to capitulate to the elf king. She wanted to make sure that he understood the meaning of what he was asking, the weight of a simple tear. The Mirkwood's ruler took his time to convince her and, in the end, he did manage to get what he wanted. The elegant lady of the Enchanted kingdom was extremely upset by king Thranduil's behaviour, by his lack of tact and sensibility. To him, it was merely a business deal that was going to get him the precious gems that he so much desired. To her, it was about her flesh and blood, the life of one of her protégées.She had observed the elf's change of attitude during the centuries and she knew exactly where it was going to get him.One day you'll open your heart again king of the Mirkwood forest, but it might be too late.Who will you find there?Even before agreeing to the deal Llyal-Eresel knew who the chosen one would have been, and it hurt her deeply. With one teardrop the young witch was going to lose all her offspring, she would have become childless; that was the price to pay.Yet, it was a tactical choice.Miriel was a seer and every day she was growing more powerful; taking away from her the possibility to bear any children meant that her precious skills were going to increase.Following that logic, the witches’ kingdom would have benefited from every side, yet what about the young one?The beautiful sovereign of the enchanted kingdom knew she had taken the wisest course, yet she was not able to rest peacefully with her decision.Winter changed into spring and Miriel knew even before her queen had called her.She understood what was asked of her and out of loyalty to her queen and her sisters she had accepted. However, the dream was still there filling her nights. She had told no one, but she knew that to solve its riddle she had to accept to fulfill the queen’s request.OOOOOOOOOCarn Dûm castle had seemed so near the day before yet the dwarves had to march all day just to reach its gates at night fall.A fine mist had risen at dusk as they approached the fortress and in the early evening, the place had acquired an even more mysterious and eerie look. The thick castle's walls rose out of the darkness, out of the silent charcoal curtain created by the mist. The beautifully smooth grey stone gleamed in the dimness of the night lit by flaming torches that created fascinating patterns of light and darkness.Hooded sentinels silently walked the walls, moving swiftly appearing and vanishing on the mighty battlements that connected the many turrets.Thorin and Vili were completely hypnotized by the scene not sure where to concentrate their gaze while still trying to grasp if the unearthly hooded figures were males or females. When the majestic gates opened they saw for the first time the queen of all witches as she was waiting for them by the castle door surrounded by some of her most loyal advisers and her top guards. The youngsters were totally mesmerized by the captivating beauty of the enchanted court. They had never seen anything like it, not even within their precious mountain and they simply could not help their dazzled look.It was beauty beyond dwarves, human or even elves creation and the ruler of that magical place fit her role perfectly.Their eyes were drawn to her and like everything around them, they could not move their gaze anywhere else.- I am Llyal-Eresel, queen of the Witches of Carn Dûm and of all the witches of Arda.I welcome you to my kingdom, king under the mountain, you and your delegation. -She said with a musically enchanting voice.Vili's spirit has been literally kidnapped by everything that laid in front of him. Nothing he had seen so far in his young life could compare. Then suddenly his bubble burst as he felt her eyes on him once more and he was sure it was her. The same one he had seen in the forest.Where are you?His eyes began to search eagerly for the one that had already taken his heart.

People are guests in our story, the same way we are guests in theirs.
But we all meet each other for a reason because every person is a personal lesson waiting to be told.

======================================Miriel spied on the queen’s guests as they entered the castle. Her vivid grey eyes searched the dwarves’ delegation taking in every minute detail. She searched and searched until her gaze fell on the one, she was looking for.The young blond dwarf that she had ‘met’ in the morning, the one that had chased her and her friend in the forest, the one that had snatched her heart with just one look. She stared at him intently and sighed.Did he travel from Erebor? How had his journey been? What did he like? And many, many more questions. No one had ever made her heart race like him.Her friend Zefyra smiled – There he is! Your little prince. -- He is not the prince... but it doesn't matter. – the young witch sighed again.Teyra giggled. – Where? Where? I want to see him.And other girls came looking all curious to see who had caught Miriel's attention.- There, the one with the golden hair. – Zefyra showed them. The one with the golden hair…. The little seer liked the sound of it very much.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOThe beautiful ruler of the enchanted kingdom led the guests into the castle to the great hall deep inside the palace. As the Erebor royals entered the fortress their eyes and the ones of the rests of the delegation were lost in its magnificence. The dwarves were used to Erebor and they appreciated the great craftsmanship that took to create their majestic kingdom, yet they were not prepared to find something that could rival that beauty so far away from their home in a lost corner of Middle Earth; however, they could not deny what their eyes were witnessing. The inside walls were covered in white stone that glistened at the light of the many torches that lit the place. Not all lights were the same; carefully distributed along their path there coloured flames, green, blue, purple or deep red that created a vibrant multicoloured effect on the walls. They were all so drawn by the flames that they almost forgot to notice the rest of the deco;ostentatiously detailed pillars, that had fruits and flowers carved into them by masters of the craft, were holding the vault of the castle’s hall. The dwarves were so taken by all the richness laid around them that almost did not realize when they reached the throne room.In there, someone else was waiting for them.King Thranduil had come as well since he was the one that had ‘created’ the opportunity for that special encounter, he had been invited as well.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUnexpectedly young Vili had caught someone else’s attention as well.As the delegation of dwarves from Erebor stood in the majestic hall of the Carn Dûm castle in front of Llyal-Eresel, queen of all witches;the silver sovereign of Mirkwood let his gaze dwell on him for a long time.He knew very well Thrór and he had seen the young prince a handful of times during his visits to Erebor but somehow, he had always missed Thorin’s adviser. At first, it was Vili’s golden locks that had drawn his attention, then Thranduil gaze had focused and he had noticed his graceful and delicate traits, almost unusual to the dwarven physiognomy and finally his captivating eyes caught him.The elf king did not allow the youngster to notice him staring, however, he felt an unmistakable ‘call’ when looking at him.Where were you hiding until now? How you came to be?And most importantly where exactly do you come from?As he concentrated more on his observation, he came to recognize who those features belonged to and in spite of his skills he could not hide the surprise that came with that realization. In that hidden away fortress Thranduil has discovered the existence of one of the most improbable 'being' in whole Arda.Llyal-Eresel caught the Mirkwood sovereign’s gaze as he was trying to flee from the subject of his interest, and he immediately knew he could not fool her.She made sure her royal guests did not notice, yet her thoughts let the elf know that she had some pressing questions to ask him.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOThe royal visitors from Erebor were then escorted to the guests' quarters after the formal welcoming;so that they could refresh themselves after the long journey before joining the queen for dinner.Vili was so busy searching for the mysterious girl he had seen in the forest and admiring the castle interiors that he almost forgot the real reason why he was there: Thorin. For a little while, he had completely forgotten that he was the prince's adviser and his guard. He was quickly brought back to reality once they arrived in the guest quarters. It is her, I am sure... but where was she? Is she one of the witches of the castle?- Vili, quick lad, stop starring at the ceiling and start unpacking. We need to get ready for dinner.Thorin needs to get ready for dinner. - Funding told him- I... - but he could not say much more.- Yeah, I want to wash before dinner, and I need to change. We are representing Erebor and we need to show them that the kingdom under the mountain has nothing to envy them. -- Really? I am not your maid Thorin. - That was what Vili wanted to say but he had to bite his tongue. He sighed and started to unpack their luggage. He never liked when his friend started to talk to him in ‘royal manner’.Yet, the prince was not the only one representing the royal household.Fundin and himself as well, needed to wear their grand uniforms.- Sharp lad, quick and sharp. - the old warrior kept on telling him as he promptly ran from one side of the room to other answering his and Thorin’s commands. However, after all the panic everything went as planned, the three of them got ready on time and joined the rest of the delegation while they were about to join the queen. As they marched through the grand corridors of the palace, looking at his advisers all dressed up for the occasion, Thorin whispered to his friend.- Wow look at you, I think I have never seen you in that uniform, I bet back in Erebor you would attract some stares. -Vili was not quite used to the uniform and his cheeks changed colour while Fundin pushed the prince forward.- Don't forget where we are your highness... and your role. - he rebuked him.And he was then that Vili felt it again. She is here.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAll the young witches had gathered with trepidation and curiosity to see the royal guests, only a few visitors came to the castle in those days and the arrival of the delegation from the Lonely Mountain was a major event.Once again, the young seer followed the dwarves every move from a hidden room that allowed her to see without been seen.'Her dwarf' had changed into a stunning uniform that merely complemented his perfect features. She could not move her gaze and she simply kept on nodding at whatever her friends were telling her, not hearing anything they were saying.Vili.She had picked up the name when his friends had rushed into the forest looking for him.To her, it was just the most beautiful name in the whole of Arda. She looked at him with dreamy eyes all evening, not missing a single gesture.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOThe dinner lasted well into the late evening. The ruler of the enchanted kingdom had lavished the Erebor's delegation with a rich feast that left them pleasantly surprised and more than satisfied. The servants kept on laying on the table huge silver platters stuffed we everything they could think of, and even many things they had never dreamed of.When the trays were empty new ones replace them so quickly, they almost did not realize... and then there were the drinks.Wine and ale came like there was no end to them. That had helped to smoothen the formal atmosphere, everyone had become more jovial and talkative and even king Thranduil did no longer mind the dwarves’ luck of formal etiquette at the dining table.By the end of the night, in the early hours of the morning, all guests were more than satisfied with their host and quite tipsy, some more than others.Vili was happily merry as he dropped himself on the comfy bed. Both he and the prince were fast asleep in seconds and even though he had drunk his good share of the fine wine and ale, Fundin helped both youngsters to remove their boots and some of their formal garments. The evening had gone well and for once he could rest soundly in the knowledge that they were in the safety of the castle walls and not sleeping outdoors.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOThorin woke up in the late morning to the sound of the birds singing.Everything in the bedroom was still. The elegant room and its tasteful décor left him confused. He felt his head spin a little as he took in every detail. His eyes run along the leaves of some unknown plants that belong to a huge painting that covered completely one of the walls. He took him few seconds to take in his surroundings and remember where he was. Then he noticed Fundin empty bed, Vili still fast asleep in his and finally, his eyes were caught by someone else. There was a girl that was standing by the balcony’s door, looking intently at his friend. He should have been immediately alarmed by her presence and yet was not.He knew she belonged to the castle and even if he had not seen any young one yet, he was more than sure she was a witch.Another minute passed, maybe even longer and everything in the room stood still. Was it a spell? Had the girl cast a spell on them?Yet, she was the one that looked hypnotized by some kind of magic. Finally, he called her attention.- Who are you? What are you doing here? Do you know... -- Sshh... - with a delicate movement, she put a finger to her lips.- or you'll wake him. - then she turned back to his friend as she tiptoed in the room.- he is so lovely when he sleeps. - she smiled.- What? - the young prince temper began to flare.Clearly, she was not a threat, he thought, not quite sure if he was going to change his opinion.Yet, she was very rude. Did she not know who he was?- Ssshhh... - she shushed him once more as she reached the bottom of Vili's bed.- What do you want from him? - a fit of strange jealousy got hold of the young royal. She turned to the young dwarf and then he could see the girl in all her beauty as she was truly a fascinating creature. She was not much taller than him, she almost looked human, a young human girl yet her out worldly features made her something else. She had moved through the room with an innate grace that made him think about the elves, yet her traits were much sweeter and more rounded. Her long dark hair ran sinuously through her back almost touching the floor, her skin looked smooth like velvet. Her long eyes seemed grey yet the colour kept on changing depending on the light.- I love him. - she said simply, replying to the prince’s question, like it was the most obvious answer, but almost as if she was talking to herself.- You what? You never even met him before? – the dark-haired dwarf protested, realizing only then that he was not jealous of her attention for Vili.He was jealous of her, the blond dwarf was HIS adviser, HIS friend. How dare she lay any claim on him?- You are wrong Thorin. - she said not moving her gaze from the blond dwarf.- I met him in the forest. -The prince did not care, he was just getting more and more annoyed.- I am prince Thorin to you... or your royal highness... not... -- Oooh, shut up Thorin. - Vili grunted hitting him with a pillow.- See you woke him up! - Miriel complained but she burst in a spontaneous laugh as the pillow hit the royal dwarf.Vili, that had buried his head under the many pillows that were populating the huge bed, came out from his cover immediately called back by her sweet giggle and he met the girl gaze. The poor youngster could not utter a world, he simply stared. It was Thorin that abruptly interrupted the reverie.- Is she the intruder you saw in the forest? -He nodded and yet he did not want to call her an intruder; how could he?The young witch once more ignored the prince.- Good morning, Vili. - she smiled.- Good morning. - the blond dwarf finally replied.- My name is Miriel, we met in the forest. -He nodded still very much mesmerized by her beauty, enchanted by her voice.Once again Thorin burst their bubble.- Who are you? What are you doing in our chambers? -She turned to the prince a little annoyed.- Like I said my name is Miriel, I live here in the castle. -- Are you a witch? -She nodded with a smile.- I don't think you are supposed to be here. Aren’t you? -- Still, I can be wherever I decide to be. - she replied, putting her hands on her hips, not quite antagonizing him but just standing her ground.Vili had liked her from the moment he had seen her, but he realized that he loved her witty character and the way she was able to stand up to Thorin. Then suddenly someone called her from the garden, a youthful voice, probably another young witch.- So sorry my friends I need to leave you... but I'll meet you at breakfast. - she smiled at Vili.- See you later, Thorin. – she looked directly at the prince as she said it.- Hurry downstairs to get your breakfast or you will find nothing left! - and with that, she rushed away climbing down the balcony like a squirrel. The future king was extremely annoyed.- And you stop staring! – he barked at his friend whom eyes could not leave the window from where the sweet girl had left.- What you have to say to that? – the witch had truly tested his patience.- Shall we go to get some breakfast? – the other dwarf said innocently.Thorin quickly picked up the pillow that was laying on the floor and he chucked it back at his friend but Vili ducked down and pillow hit the wall narrowly missing a crystal vase that was on the night table.- If anything breaks it’s your fault. -- Why it is always my fault? I just woke up. – the blond dwarf complained.- ‘Cos… -- Oh wait I know, ‘cos you are the prince. – he cut him off half mockingly as he got out of bed.In response he was hit by a pillow to which he replied with another one that once again hit the target. The prince mood was turning a little more playful, after all, he could not take it on his friend. It was the witch fault, not his.- Wait that I catch you… I’ll dangle you from the balcony. -- I really, want to see that Thorin. – the blond youngster dared him.- I … -- Tell me one more time that you will be king, and I’ll bet the crown will grow on your head. – he mocked him again. At that comment the dark-haired prince pulled a rug from under his feet sending is friend flying on the floor.- It is not for nothing that, I will be king. – he laughed out loud as Fundin enter the room.- Finally, you two are up. – he said dryly as Vili got up from the floor.- We were going downstairs to get breakfast. – the prince’s adviser tried to save the situation.- Stop mocking around! – the old dwarf barked.- You’ll have breakfast here and then you’ll come with me to the courtyard where the others are already training. –- Training? What do you mean? – Thorin mood was shifting again.- Your royal highness, you did not think that this was a holiday? –Fundin teased his prince picking up on what he had heard while the two youngsters were ‘playing’.- Where is my grandfather? – the prince was having none of it.- Busy in negotiation with the queen, so I am in charge. -In the meantime, Vili was busy getting ready as quickly as he could sensing troubles coming from far and predicting a long and hard day ahead.- Negotiations? What is negotiating? – the dark-haired did not like to be told what to do and he liked even less to be kept in the dark.Thor had never told him the reason for the trip, yet he had believed that the king was going to tell him once they had reached their destination.- I don’t know and it is not my nor your business to know. – the old warrior was talking at just one inch from Thorin’s face.- I … -- and I am in charge. – and with that, the conversation was closed. The young prince wanted to add something else, but his friend pocked him on the side.- Let’s have breakfast – he whispered – It’s better. –Surprisingly, with a cold stare directed at the elder dwarf, the stubborn youngster followed his friend.- We need to get back at him. – he said under his breath only when they were out of the door.Vili sighed, he was not ready to get into troubles once again. They had their morning meal in the main guests’ room and then they headed to training. The younger members of the Erebor’s delegation spent the rest of the day practising until the evening. They were very tired, their ‘guardian’, had not given them a second to rest during the whole day;his mission was to ensure that the two resourceful friends did not cause any problem. When they finished, they had their dinner in their room in silence as they were too exhausted to even talk, and they fell asleep soon after. They both woken up early in the morning, not by the stout warrior that was their guardian but by the fragrant aroma of cakes and biscuits. The young witch had returned, while Fundin was not around, and she had brought them a freshly baked breakfast and not only that …
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Nothing is impossiblesome things are justless likely then others.- Jonathan Winters -=================The queen of the witches had invited the elf king in her chambers the day after the arrival of the Erebor’s delegation. She wanted to see him before she met Thrór to start the negotiations. She had some very important questions for Thranduil; she had not missed his gaze on one of the young dwarves accompanying Thrór.She had noticed that he had not been able to hide his surprise while he had desperately tried to conceal it.What have you found out King of Mirkwood? On his way to the queen’s private rooms, Thranduil was debating, what he was going to tell her?He already knew why she had summoned him.He had been so stunned by his discovery that he had not been able to keep it from her.Yet she was a clever lady, he admitted to himself, it would have been difficult to keep anything from her.Still, he did not need to reveal everything. The silver sovereign could not stop thinking…The blond dwarf had been in his thoughts since he had noticed him upon the dwarves’ arrival. The more he had looked at him the more he had been puzzled by his existence.More than impossible, it would have been improbable and yet he was there before his eyes. Why would an elf choose a dwarf... a female dwarf? That puzzled him.Why would an elf of such stature choose a female dwarf? With a simple glance, the king of Mirkwood had discovered a secret that not even Vili's father knew. Most importantly with a simple glance, he had worked out who was the elf that had dared to mix his line with the dwarf race and that puzzled him even more. However, before he could say anything before, he could even think about how such a discovery could help him, he had to be absolutely sure.No more mistakes. He resolved to tell the queen only what he was sure of.After all, he had more pressing problems that the blond dwarf from Erebor. He had to push Thrór to agree on a deal with the queen of the enchanted kingdom and then he had to make sure that the king under the mountain was going to pay him for his part in making the deal possible and that was the most difficult task. The dwarf king had grown greedy and he was getting even more avid as time passed. He had warned him that his thirst for gold and gems and his ever growing treasure were going to attract unwanted attention.Ultimately they were growing only to bring him down.Yet, he knew that all that gold, that immense fortune had begun to corrupt Thrór’s mind and it would have been quite difficult for him to just snap out of it.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.Miriel had chosen for her dwarven friends the best cakes and biscuits. She had giggled while she picked them just thinking about their faces.I love surprises and morning surprises are the best! She loved Vili, she did from the moment their eyes had met.She had never loved anybody before, not in that way, yet she knew, that was love. However, she liked Thorin as well, in a different way but she did.She found him very funny, all proud of himself. It was so easy to make fun of him… she giggled again just at the thought.Yet, she knew he had a good heart, she could easily see it in his eyes.He would have been a good king, one day; she was sure of it.He and Vili were good friends and that made her happy as well. Those were her thoughts as she approached the room where the queen’s guests were sleeping. It had not been easy to reach them. She had to keep her visits secret, or she was sure they would have forbid her to see them. For that precise reason, she could not walk across the palace. She has to go through the gardens, hidden by the lushly foliage and flowers of the gorgeous plants growing in there. Then, she had to climb up to their balcony, holding tightly to the fragrant climbers growing on the castle's walls.Once in the room she looked at the two youngsters still sleeping and smiled. There was a lovely sense of excitement in her, she could almost taste it like her friends were going to taste her gifts. She laid the cakes on the table and then she checked on them pausing a long time by Vili’s bedside.Ah, if I love you!She took in every detail of the sleeping blond. She knew that the young dwarves were soon going to be awakened by the fragrant aroma of the cakes.Thorin took a deep breath… it was smelling cakes and it was smelling them for real it was not a dream…Not even a second later Vili took a deep breath… cakes… breakfast…- Thorin? – his friend called him.- Vili, it smells like cakes. – was his response.- It does… -They both sat up, on their beds at the same time.Vili’s face looked slightly sleepier than Thorin.- Good morning. – Miriel greeted them.- I have brought you breakfast. – she added with a large smile. They both smiled back and jumped out of bed. They thanked her while already devouring the cakes and biscuits.- Uhm… You know Vili? – the prince took another bite.- I think that after all, it is not so bad that she likes you. –Thorin said munching on a cake.- Clearly, your stomach comes first, your royal highness. – his friend chuckled.- You are just lucky to be at my service; you would not be eating such fine food otherwise. -- You are lucky I am at your service or you would have not even seen these cakes. -They went along like that for a little while until they finish all the cakes leaving not even a small crumb. The young witch was very satisfied she loved the way they appreciated her gifts.Vili went to fetch a jug of water as there was nothing else in the room that he could offer to the lovely girl that had kindly brought them breakfast.Thorin spotted him and he did not miss the opportunity as his friend approached the table.- Thank you for thinking about us and let me offer you some water. – he said as Vili put down the jug on the table, rolling his eyes. It was my idea.- I am sorry I can offer you only this. If we were in Erebor… -But Vili could not let him finish – If we were in Erebor my prince will shower you with gold and gems but since we are not, here you go. –He said offering her a glass of water. She giggled and took it from his hands.- How are you today? – Vili smiled to the girl looking straight into her stormy eyes. Then it was Thorin's turn to roll his eyes.- I am fine. Thank you. – a charming smile lit her face. The young witch was very curious about the queen’s guests, where they came from and how was life outside the castle. She was so young when she was brought to the enchanted palace that it was really hard to remember anything before, she was there. She craved to know what was happening outside her confined world. The Erebor price was more than happy to comply to it and satisfy her thirst for knowledge of the outside. He described to her his magnificent realm with words that only he could find and that were a real statement to how proud he has to be the prince of the kingdom under the mountain, and his blond friend felt very honoured to be at his service. Then Miriel turned to her favourite dwarf – Please tell me about your journey. -Vili was taken aback for a second as he was still lost in his friend’s words; then looking at her compelling eyes he began to recall their journey from the Lonely Mountain.Unfortunately, before he could even get through the first days, they heard the outside door, the one to the guest chambers and Fundin steady steps coming at a fast pace.- Hide. – Thorin hissed as the girl run to the balcony.- In your bed. – he turned to his adviser. As the old warrior opened the door, he found the two youngsters casually getting up from their beds.- You should have been up already. – he barked at them. The dark-haired dwarf seemed unaffected by his words, so he turned to his friend.- You should have been up already, and you should have woken him up. – the dwarf was gesturing towards the prince who clearly did not like his tone but still kept quiet.- I… - he tried to protest while Thorin’s eyes were telling him not to reply, but the blond one did not want to take the blame.- Thorin can wake up on his own, can’t he? -- You are his adviser, his guard, his servant. – Fundin barked again just one inch from his face.He was not having a good day and he needed to pass on some of his frustration.- Get ready, both of you. Now! – the old warrior said slamming the door while leaving the room.- Damn it! I always get blamed. – The young adviser complained.- You should have kept your mouth shut. – his friend replied.- Listen who’s talking. -They both run to the balcony where the young witch was waiting in hiding. She smiled when she saw them.- I need to go and you need to go too. – she told them.- But I’ll see you tomorrow. – she said landing a soft kiss on the blond dwarf cheek. He went slightly red but that made him more than happy. She likes me. She really likes me.Then she disappeared quickly claiming down the plants and running away into the gardens.Vili went back to the room, sighed and let himself fall on the bed while Thorin shook his head.- Honestly, one little witch and you already turned to butter. -- You don’t understand. She is the loveliest creature I have ever seen. -His friend shook his head again.- You don’t understand. Get up and get ready or Fundin will have a go at you again. -- I don’t care. – Vili replied touching his face in the exact spot where Miriel’s kiss had landed. The dark-hair dwarf rolled his eyes. – Idiot. -- I am in love. -- You are an idiot in love. – Thorin chucked one of his pillows to the other dwarf.- Move quickly! -His adviser sighed once more as they began to get ready as quickly as they could. They were expecting another long day of training.OOOOOOOOOOOLlyal-Eresel was sitting elegantly at the table by the window when her guards allowed in the Mirkwood sovereign.Thranduil eyes run quickly through the stylish room and its lavish décor before reaching the queen of the witches to search her gracious face. What I am going to tell you?- Good morning. – she greeted him.- You look stunning this morning. – he complimented her.- Thank you. - she smiled politely. - Please sit with me. – she gestured to the empty chair in front of her.The queen of the enchanted realm offered him some of the food that was on the table but she wasted no time and got straight to the point.- My friend, I am sure you already know why I have called you. So please tell me what or better who has caught your attention. -The elf king deliberation was quick and simple.Tell her as little as possible.- My queen, there is so little I can hide from you. – Thranduil, you are such a crafty liar.- One of the young dwarves in Thrór’s delegation. The prince’s adviser, I think. -- The golden hair youngster? -He nodded to the comment.- Well, he caught my eyes. – he paused a second wishing that he did not need to tell her.- I believe he has elvish blood in him. - he finally admitted. She elegantly lifted her cup.- As improbable as it is, I had guessed that much. - she revealed. - Yes, it bewilders me thinking who would be the elf that could mix with the dwarves. – he wanted to steer the conversation into another direction.- Yet, I cannot imagine you bothering too much about it if a common Silvan elf decided to fall for a dwarf… am I right? -She was going exactly where he did not want her to go.- Well… personally do not think any of my kind could fall for one of them, Silvan or not. -He admitted to her still earnestly puzzled. - Who is it, Thranduil? - - I honestly cannot say. -- You know. – I know that you know.- I cannot say, as I cannot be sure. – he said a little frustrated.- One of the high elves? - He hated the way she was trying to force the answers from him, yet he maintained his composure. He was a guest in her kingdom. That was her home for the queen there should have been no secrets. He knew that and he understood.- I honestly cannot be sure and I don’t want to be mistaken. – he told her.He gave her the best answer he could.Llayl-Eresel pondered at his words and their implications. If it was not Silvan elf that mixed his blood with the dwarves what was the reason behind it.Why? What is their plan?- He was not Silvan elf, was he? – she needed him at least to confirm what he knew.Reluctantly Tharduil was ‘forced’ to answer.- It was not a Silvan elf. -She nodded and pondered at the implications of what the Mirkwood king was telling her.One of the higher elves had deliberately mixed with a dwarrowdam;who were the two in question she did not know nor did her royal guest or so she believed. They did not know how far down the line this had happened.Yet, there was enough elvish blood in the young dwarf for Thranduil to recognize him as an offspring of a higher elf and crucially the youth in question had ended up in Thrór's royal court and very close to the young prince. What is the plan? Did they want him there? Finally, it was very likely that the young dwarf was completely oblivious to all of this; they need to know more.Taking a sip for her cup the queen of the witches said calmly – I think we need to take a closer look at our young guest? –The silver sovereign nodded.True.They needed to know more still the Mirkwood king was not prepared to share anything else with the royal witch.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAfter a long training day, the two dwarves’ friends returned to their room completely exhausted.- We need to get back at him. – Thorin grunted.- I cannot even think, Thorin. – Vili yawned.- We must! Before he finishes us off with another day of training. -- My brain has stopped working ours ago. – the blond one cried.- Your brain has melted this morning over the little witch. -His adviser sighed closing his eyes.- Do I need to do everything alone? – the prince grunted again.- You are the prince; you are in charge. -But the dark-haired dwarf was tired as well, too tired to answer. They both fall asleep on their beds with their boots still on, only for Fundin to come into the room later on to remove them.Miriel came the following morning and every morning after to see the young dwarf that had stolen her heart and to know more about them and their journey. She was absolutely fascinated by their stories.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
There is a secret garden
where miracles and magic
abound, and it's available
to anyone who makes the
choice to visit there.
- Dr Wayne W. Dyer -
- I can see you clearly now-
=========================
Their steps echoed in the castle’s corridors.
It was a very late afternoon and for once, Thorin and Vili had finished their training session earlier.
They were getting ready for the evening meal when the king had called the prince in his rooms and Fundin and Vili had been asked to follow. As they approached the door of the guest chambers assigned to Thrór, they overheard him taking.
- Aye, the young lad’s father is the best jeweller in the Mountain. – The king’s voice was a little slurred.
He was not drunk but quite tipsy.
– In fact, he is the one that has cut those stones that you like so much. – he laughed loudly.
Clearly, the alcohol had loosened his tongue.
- Uhm really? – Thranduil nodded sipping from his cup, somehow not surprised.
Those gems of pure starlight were made by the father of the blond dwarf.
- Obviously… - he thought - The best dwarf craftsmanship mixed with the skilled touch of an elf. -
He had begun to be intrigued by the existence of such a being.
Was it really such a bad idea, if he was able to produce such a marvel like those gems he loved?
He wondered again how far back the elves' line and mixed with the dwarves' one.The Erebor sovereign was in the company of the Mirkwood King who had decided to share some of his precious wine with him, a gift, he had told him.
A couple of bottles that he had brought with him from his Kingdom, especially for such occasion.Thorin, Fundin and Vili entered the room together but only the prince walked towards the king, alone, as his advisers stayed respectfully behind.
- Here you are… my grandson. - Thrór called Thorin to join them while one of Thranduil servant quickly offered him a glass of wine.
The old warrior and the youngster nodded politely towards their sovereign and prepared to leave the room, when the monarch called after Vili.
– There he is… come here, laddie. -
The blond bowed slightly and moved forward. – Yes, sire. -
The king had talked to him only a handful of times before. He seems polite and well mannered.
The elf had been carefully observing the youngster for days.
Sometimes he had pondered… Maybe if we’ll take you away from them you could actually begin to shine…
Just the day before he had observed him practising with some of his guards and he had been favourably impressed.
Obviously, anything that was good in the young half breed belonged to the elves and seeing his lineage he could not expect anything else than a top warrior.Vili took a quick glance at both sovereigns but then he tried to keep his eyes politely on the floor.
- King Thranduil has admired your skills yesterday. – a satisfied smile was on Thrór’s face.
His warriors were second to no elf.
- Thank you, sire. – he bowed again and Thorin knew that his friend did not like it.
All of them did not like it.
Thrór was too loud the young prince thought.
The king was too open and friendly with the elf, Fundin was quite suspicious.
His majesty had had one too many and he could no longer realize what game Thranduil was playing, Vili was concerned.
Maybe he was mistaken but he thought he had felt the eyes of the elf sovereign on him and Thorin, too many times, in the previous days.
It was hard to shake away that feeling.
What does he want from us?
- You have some skilled young warriors among your ranks. – the voice of the Mirkwood king was velvet to the ears.
- Erebor seems to be producing better and better warriors as time passes. – he added.
- We are indeed – the dwarf laugh taking the bate. He loved compliments too much almost as he loved to count his gold.
- …even if this young one it is not all entirely a product of the Lonely Mountain. –
- Oh really? –
- You come from the Grey Mountains don’t you laddie? -
Here you go granddad spill all the beans. Tell him every detail.
Thorin was not happy.
Vili just nodded politely.
- Still, Erebor is where you grew up and you got trained, and it’s your home now. Am I right? – the king reminded him where his loyalty should lay.
- Yes, sire. -
The prince just wanted to free his friend.
Vili was not a prize possession of the Erebor’s king or a mere loyal servant.
He drunk some wine – Let them go grandfather. They need to get back to their duties. – he said dryly.
Thrór did not mind him, he knew his grandson’s character and the sweet wine he was drinking has softened him.
– You can go. Both of you. – he dismissed them with a quick hand gesture.
The two dwarves disappeared as quickly as they could, breathing a sigh of relief.
Still, even if he did not like too much the company and Thrór’s behaviour; Thorin was going stay as long as he could.
The prince was desperate to find out the reason for their journey. He felt that he had waited long enough. It was time to know.OOOOOOOOOThe young prince was in a nasty mood the following morning when the sweet witch showed up to share the breakfast with them.
It had become a lovely habit of hers and young Vili enjoyed it very much and so did his grumpy friend.
However, that day the fragrant cakes did not seem to warm up the royal mood.
Vili sweet smile was all for her but she could not help but notice his friend foul disposition.
- What’s wrong with his majesty? – she asked her favourite dwarf deliberately letting the other hear her words.
The young blond was already on the cakes.
- He is upset with his grandpa. – he replied munching on his breakfast.
- Oh really? – she clearly wanted to catch Thorin’s attention.
- Yeah, he wants to know why we are here. – Vili kept on crunching some of the biscuits.
The prince cleared his throat deliberately making them turn to him.
- So dear witch, did you come here so early this morning just to see his pretty face?
Or to catch some gossips? -
She grimaced – I always like to share with you some cakes. –
Then, Miriel turned to the prince adviser and looking lovingly into his magnetic eyes she added.
- You are always my first thought in the morning. –
She smiled to Vili and he did smile back in response.
- I just love to bring you breakfast, you know. – she sighed as she was still looking deep into the blonde’s eyes while talking.
They were so captivating but Vili expression made her think that probably he was completely oblivious to the way he looked to her.
Thorin cleared his voice once more.
She finally turned her attention to him.
- Is it so important for you to know the reason why you are here, my price?
I thought you liked our palace. – she grimaced.
- As good as your hospitality is, I’d rather stay home than being dragged more than halfway across Arada, not even knowing the reason why? -
- Ah, that seems to be quite a problem – she moved closer to the dark-haired dwarf.
- It is. – he was getting annoyed with her as well.
- Sorry, I always thought… assumed you knew… - she trailed off.
- Knew what? – he said a little too abruptly.
- Do you know why we are here? – Vili echoed.
She nodded with a mischievous look on her face.
- You don’t know that. – How could you know that?
It was no mystery to anybody within the dwarves’ delegation, that the prince did not like that fact that his grandfather had kept him in the dark in regards to the reason for their trip and the possibility that the young witch knew more than he did, made him even less happy.
- I do. – she replied.
- I don’t think so. – he said turning away from her.
- I do ‘cause I am the reason you are here. – she protested and she finally managed to catch the full attention of both youngsters.
- You cannot…. You cannot possibly be. – Thorin said incredulously.
While his adviser was just looking at the girl quite astonished.
What is your story?
Again she let them wait, debating what to tell them.
The truth… let them in.
The prince was waiting.
He has the right to know.- You are here because the king needs one of my tears. – she said simply.
The two friends look at each other ready to burst into a spontaneous laugh, leaving Miriel looking at them quite disappointed.
Why don’t you believe me?
- And you expect me to believe that we travel all the way from Erebor just for a tear? –
Thorin asked her with a half-mocking smile.
- It is not any tear! – she protested.
- Come on, you could have found a better story. – he mocked her.
That really upset the girl.
She looked at both in such a way that Vili stopped smirking immediately.
- There is more magic in one of my tears than you can ever imagine. –
She went close to the prince as he seemed he had no intention of taking her seriously.
If she was angry with Thorin she was holding it well Vili thought.
- Really? -
- You won't know where it might take you. – she said just a few inches from his face more alluring than upset.
- And where that is? – he replied still closing the distance a little more as he was still trying to antagonize her.
Vili was stunned by the way she was controlling the situation pushing his friend to do exactly what she wanted him to do.They wanted to know what she knew.
Thorin was very curious, even if he could not know quite believe what she had said.
Her eyes were dancing on the prince’s face.
Yet, the one she had enchanted was not him.
Vili was staring at the girl completely mesmerized.
She smiled mischievously.
- Answer me. – Thorin demanded almost as if he was talking to one of his servants.
But she was not that.
The young prince grabbed her arm as she was still smiling.
- Tell me I command you. -
- You cannot command me... not me. -
She laughed and this time Vili laughed with her.
She turned to him. Her eyes got lost this time.
It was not the first time that she had looked at him like that.
- Your eyes are so... alive. – she said to the blond dwarf.
- Don't look at her Vili. She'll bewitch you. – the prince told his friend.
- He is the one doing the bewitching. - she accused.
Both youngsters laughed at that comment.
Miriel turned back to window
- If you are not prepared to listen to me then I’ll go. – she said a little upset.
- No please don’t. – Vili cried as his prince looked at him almost disappointed.
- Are you prepared to listen then? – she looked directly at Thorin.
The young dwarf nodded still a little incredulous and the girl knew then that she had his full attention.
So, she explained the power that one of her tears held and the deal that the king under the mountain was going to strike with the queen of the witches.
Both youngsters were very much absorbed by her story and they did not like the term of the deal.
- How could you queen have asked you something like that? – Vili began to dislike the ruler of the small kingdom.
How can she do this to Miriel?
The girl was touched by his concern.
- My sweet love, she has absolutely no choice. – she said gently stroking his cheek.
- Nonsense, there is always a choice. – he retorted.
- Do you think? – she marveled at his concern.
- She just made a bad one. -
- I’ll tell my grandfather not to accept. – Thorin said.
How could Thrór make such a deal? He was young, he had a brother and sister?
Why was the king so worried that his line, their line was in danger?
Erebor was a powerful kingdom within Middle Earth and one of the most prosperous.
Nobody would even dare to try to wage war on them.
Yet, he knew that the young witch did not hold all the answers.
- No, don’t… please. – Miriel cried.
The deal had to go through; she knew that.
It was important for her kingdom and it was essential for other reasons…
There were higher things in motion that she could not quite understand but she knew it was of crucial importance that everything took place exactly as it was meant to.
The faces of the children in her dreams suddenly popped in her head.
Who are they? The prince was upset, clearly, the young witch did not know what she was putting herself through.
Her queen must have coerced her so well into it that she even believed it was right.
The young dwarf was not going to let such a thing happen.
There were times when he no longer liked how his grandfather was conducting his business.
He had made his resolution he was going to talk to Thrór.
- I need to talk to my grandfather. -
The young witch looked and the future king with her stormy eyes.
There are so many things you don’t know ‘cause you cannot see them.
- You could be a good king... - she said.
- I will be. - he was overflowing with confidence.
The girl hand delicately touched his face.
- You could be a good king; you have gentile eyes and a good heart. -
Something in her eyes touched him inside.
- Don't look at the gold. - she whispered – You are not your grandfather. -
- What? -
- You will forget, and you'll remember only too late. -
- What? –
- Don’t ask anything to your king. Just let it happen. Please. – she told him.
Someone outside in the garden was calling her.
They were looking for her.
- Don't look at the gold. - she whispered again in one soft breath.
Someone called her again and she had to run away quickly.
She stopped in front of Vili to kiss him softly on his cheek.
- My love. - she murmured almost too low for him to hear it as she went to the balcony.
In less than a blink, she climbed the wall and disappeared through the lush foliage.A sad mood took hold of both youths and did not leave them for the whole day.
They could have never guessed the reason of their journey not even with all their imagination.
The young witch sacrifice had touched them deeply.
Thorin wanted to talk to the king as soon as possible.
That deal was wrong no matter what the young witch was saying.
He had begun to like her; she was a friend and friends were important to him.In the following days, he tried many times to talk to Thrór but his grandfather was always too busy.
At times he got very upset – He must talk to me I am his grandson! – he barked directing his frustration to poor Fundin.Miriel did not stop coming, she was there every morning with fresh cakes and biscuits for them, sometimes still warm from the oven.
Trying to convince her that she should back out of the deal, brought the prince even more frustrations.
She was simply too stubborn. As the days passed the two friends had managed to learn more about the deal.
The crucial issue where the negotiation got stuck, was the price that the king was going to pay.
For the value of one magic tear, the king under the mountain wanted to be guaranteed at least 2 heirs however the witches’ queen was unmovable the deal was one tear one soul, one heir for the Erebor’s sovereign.
That was, as the young witch had explained, because a magical tear could really generate only one soul.
Yet, Thrór was very determined and he did not care if another witch had to be sacrificed for the same price.
Llyal-Eresel had grown to dislike deeply the dwarf king, his greediness and his lack of empathy.
He had simply refused to understand her sacrifice, one that she was not taking lightly.
The poor queen had many sleepless nights looking at the starry sky asking herself if what she was doing to one of her young witches was right.
Yet, she could not sleep and therefore she could not dream so no answer was coming to comfort her.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOFinally, one day, just as they were about to finish their evening meal, Fundin came to get Thorin.
- The king wants to talk to you. Get ready, he is with Thranduil. –
The old warrior sounded quite tired but there was no way for the two youths to know why.
Lately, he had merely done his best to ensure that they trained so hard during the day that by the evening there was absolutely no energy left in their bodies.
They were both going to get ready but Fundin stopped them. – Only Thorin. -
As the old warrior left Miriel’s face popped out from the balcony’s door.
She had been clearly eavesdropping on their conversation.
- You go, my prince; I’ll take care of your adviser. – she smiled happily.
He rolled his eyes – He does not need any taking care and please make sure that I find him exactly as I left him. I cannot deal with a toad. -
She grimaced – No worries. I had never turned anybody into a frog… yet. -
- And I am sorry, where am I in this conversation? – Vili protested still taking one more bite of his dinner.
- With me, my love. You are with me, obviously. – she smiled sweetly to her favourite dwarf.
- Thorin? – not that the blond minded but still he was the prince adviser or at least he tried to be.
His friend looked directly at the witch – Not a hair out of place. -
- I promise. – she said earnestly yet a mischievous smile lit her face.
While the young prince was gone Miriel convinced his friend to climb down from the balcony into the garden.
Actually, there was not much convincing needed as the blond dwarf was prepared to follow her practically anywhere. The palace’s gardens were simply magical.
All the plants in there were so different from what the young dwarf was used to; the lush deep green vegetation with leaves of thousands different shapes and tones and maybe more, the flowers some so gracious and delicate and others so big colourful and vibrant. It was like walking into a dream.
Then there were the fireflies, they were everywhere following them, lighting their path.
A charming beacon in that enchanted garden.
Miriel loved the way Vili’s eyes darted around capturing every single detail.
She loved the wonder she saw in them.- I really like it here. – the young dwarf said totally mesmerized.
- I wish I could keep you here with me forever. – the young witch replied.
She sighed – If only I could. -
- I wish I could take you back with me. – he told her allowing himself to touch her silky hair, moving back a rebellious strand.
They were so soft, and she was so beautiful. Her eyes were beaming the moonlight.
She sighed again – And I wish I could come. -
Their wishing had brought them quite close and they had no longer any control.
Things always tend to happen the way the meant to, at times it takes longer others times it is quicker…
and so their lips met in a soft kiss and they both knew that was meant to be.
Once they parted, they were lost in each other eyes for a while protected by the garden, serenaded by the crickets.
They strolled hand in hand talking softly to each other trying to stretch that sweet evening as long as they could.
So, the young witch learnt a little more about her precious dwarf and the blond youth find out a bit more about the attractive enchantress.
Finally, she had to part from him again and she left him just under the balcony to let him climb back alone.
She did not move until she was sure that he was safely back into his room.Vili found his friend already waiting for him.
The meeting with his grandfather had not gone as planned but once Thorin saw his friend face he could not help himself and smiled.
His adviser had walked into the room with such a dazzled, dreamy look that he had not even noticed him while he laid on the bed.
- Let me see, you are not a frog and I think not a hair is out of place… but probably your brain is gone. -
Vili sighed. – She is the most beautiful creature that ever existed. -
The prince rolled his eyes.
His friend sighed again – Can we take her back with us? -
Thorin laughed loudly, at least his adviser was always able to lift the mood.
- She is not a pet or a relic that you can bring back from a journey. -
- I did not meant it that way. –
- I know but they won’t let her come …. And I won’t let you stay. -
Vili sighed one more. – So unfair. –
- I know, I know. – his friend replied thinking more about his conversation with Thrór than about what the blond one had just said. That night Miriel dreamed again a beautiful dream and even though the details were foggy once she walked up, yet she knew that her sweet Vili was in it, so was Thorin, and the lovely children she always dreamed of. Somehow, they were all connected, and it was all meant to be.
Most importantly she knew a decision was coming soon.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Sometimes when you sacrifice something precious, you're not really losing it. You're just passing it on to someone else.- Mitch Albom - The Five People You Meet in Heaven -=================The night was still enveloping her world when the girl woke up.Yet she knew the morning was fast approaching, and she knew a decision was coming.Still, she could not tell what it was going to be.However, there was only one decision, in her mind, that would have allowed destiny to take the right course. She knew that much. There was quite a debate in her heart, then what she had dreamt came back to her again.Right or wrong she was going to give a little push for destiny to follow his 'proper' path. She dressed up quickly, in total silence and climbed down to the enchanted garden.Darkness did not bother her.In the depth of the night, the garden looked even more spectacular than during the day.The nocturnal flowers were all open to reveal the bright colours that they had kept hidden during the day. They all glowed to lit up her way as the fireflies moved through the darkness.Miriel climbed up into her friends’ bedroom. They were both deeply asleep. She walked to the young blond dwarf's bed and paused there for a long while. You are so sweet, my precious love. The young witch committed every detail of that moment to her memory. She knew that soon after that night the dwarves were going to leave. She sighed. It was unfair but it had to happen that way.It was still night when she climbed into another room.No one heard her, no one saw her, she was invisible to all.Miriel watched the king while he was sleeping and then as silently as she had got into the royal bedroom, she entered Thrór's dreams.- Who are you? - the king asked with his eyes not quite opened.- I am the chosen one that would deliver what you are seeking. -- Are you the young witch .... you are the one that will... - he was still half asleep.- I am. - she said simply. She shared with him part of her visions and then she made her plea.- My king, I beg you to accept my lady's offer. I, not her... I promise you, two heirs. -- You? - What was she telling him?- I promise you, two heirs. And I am the only one that can promise you this as I know it will happen. -- You? -- Believe me, as I have no reason to lie to you... you know what I am giving up for this. -Thrór sat on his bed. The young girl was real, and she was in his room.- Please, my king. -She bowed once more and then she left quickly. The new day was going to start very soon, it was already there and there was no time left. The night flowers had gone to sleep again. She had made her supplication, her appeal. She could only hope to have reached the king’s heart, deep inside that disturbed soul. She could see clearly what only a few had started to notice and believe. The king was in deep troubles.Miriel run like the wind through the garden. She had another important mission to accomplish, getting breakfast to her dear dwarves. There was not much time left.Sadly her days with them were going to come to an end very soon. Her thoughts went to her sweet Vili.I will miss you so terribly every second, of every hour, of every day.She sighed.Once more she was going to share the morning meal with her two friends.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOThe young witch came looking for them early in the morning. She had been running and she was almost out of breath.- Look she cannot stay without us. - Thorin told his friend. The young prince and Vili laughed loudly as she laid the biscuits and cakes on the table.- Fools. - she said in one hard breath.- You were looking for us... or not? - a teasing smile lifted his features.- You were waiting for me. - she said catching her breath.Vili laughed; he simply could not help himself.Thorin shot him a killer look.- So, what do you want from us? -- You are always this charming in the morning, my prince? -The young dwarf looked away before his prince could see his smirk.- Have you come here just to make fun of me, witch? -- On the contrary, I love our chats and I thought you did too. - she was still mocking him.- Honestly, I cannot deal with you so early in the morning. - the young prince moaned. She smiled sweetly. The arrogant dwarf had grown on her.- I came to tell you that the decision is about to be taken. -They both turned to her quite shocked.- It will happen today. -- The tear. - the dark-haired dwarf whispered. She nodded and smiled.- Yes... -- Miriel. – her name on his lips sounded so sad that time. She looked directly at the prince.- I came to tell you that what my lady told you from the beginning is right... one tear one soul... however... -Her attention had drifted again to Vili, she stopped mesmerized by the dark eyes of the blond dwarf.- However? - Thorin called back her attention.- My tear will bring you, two heirs. -- Two... -- Yes, two. That's what I see. That is what has been reserved for you. -- How? -- How? Are you not happy? -- Well... yes, no… I don’t know. This all tear business, I don’t want it. … and how? -- I don't ask how to the Universe. -- I am asking you, not the Universe. Besides, why are you telling me this? -She turned once more to her charmer.- Is he always this confused in the morning? -The young dwarf chuckled.- There are many things the Universe has prepared for you Thorin son of Thráin.Many you won't like still you'll bare through them 'cos you will not even see them coming. Some you will welcome as they will warm your stubborn heart. My gift is one of them. -- Two heirs...- he repeated.- You two know this and your grandfather. No one else does and no one else should. -- Your lady? -- As I said, no one else does and no one else should. -The dark-haired dwarf looked puzzled.- I don’t want your gift. -She pouted.- I don’t want your sacrifice. No matter whatever your queen has told you. No matter what she or my grandfather want. -- I want to give you this gift. -What are your reasons? Why?Yet looking in eyes he saw no hidden plan.- What's in for you? -- You still don't trust me? -- You must have a reason. -- I have my reasons but unlike what you think I have no second plan. -She looked straight into his blue eyes.- Don’t you think that sometimes there are just people that deserve to be? -His face did not change so she continued.- They deserve to be, 'cause everyone’s life will be empty without them and as little or as long as they shine they will make the world a better place. -She then gave him a pensive look.- Maybe you are one of those people yourself... I have not made my mind up yet. -- Why? -- 'cause you won’t let the shadow fall on all of us. -- What? – poor Thorin was getting more and more confused, yet he could not see what she saw.Someone was calling the young witch; the voice was getting closer.- I must leave you. – there was urgency in her voice, yet her eyes were sad.The young prince understood her urgency... still I had so many questions, but he knew too well that she was not going to give him any answer.- Don’t do it… please. – he asked her.She just starred at the young dwarf and there was no way for him to find out what was going through her head.- Please. – he said again.Vili had never heard Thorin talking to someone like that.Miriel smiled and then went to hug Vili very quickly, taking him by surprise. Then she softly kissed his cheek.- You are always my love. - she whispered in his ear before running away.Thorin smiled at his friend looking at the girl dazed while she ran away and somehow they both felt that it all happened so quickly and that they should have stopped her.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOThat day Thrór, King under the mountain, sovereign of the dwarves of Erebor, accepted Llyal-Eresel offer.A deal was struck, and the payment was agreed. The queen of the witches was happily surprised and deeply saddened. What had been done could not be undone and destiny was going to take its course. The sovereign of the enchanted kingdom was going to live with what she had done. She sent one of her aids to look for the witch that was going to deliver her part of the deal, knowing very well that the young one already knew. The queen of the witches thought about Miriel. She was sweet, full of life and innocent goodness. She had a trusty heart that was not made for the evils of the world. She fondly remembered the day when the young witch had arrived at the palace as a child. She was just a couple of years older than a toddler; Byel, one of the high witches had found her in a farm quite far from the castle. They had told her that she was the daughter of a girl that lived in the nearby village; an orphan that had no family and that had died in childbirth.Nobody knew who the baby's father was and nobody had come to claim her so a local family had taken her in.As the little girl grew the farmer's wife had begun to notice that she was not quite like the other children in the village. So when Byel had asked for her, the lady had let her go gladly. The high witch had recognized in Miriel the bloodline of the witches and she felt her powers, so she had brought her to the castle. All witches followed their mother's line. All male offspring were abandoned as babies, only the females were taken back to the castle. And only the high witches were allowed to keep caring for their sons a little longer, but no male was allowed to live within the palace's walls. When Byel had taken in the child, she knew that her mother was not one of her own, the witches' line ran from her father.Every young witch was precious to Llyal, she was everything to them, their 'mother', their protector, the mentor, the guardian of their powers, their queen.Yet, Miriel was dear to her heart more than she ever knew, and more than the beautiful ruler liked to admit. She was important for so many reasons. The young witch was the product of centuries of unions between the witches, the great men of Númenor and the elves hence her name to remind anybody of one of her greatest ancestors. Miriel was the name of the first wife of Finwë, King of the Noldor.More important than that she was the granddaughter of the previous queen, her brother's daughter, her niece. She reminded her so much of him, innocent and naïve as she was.He had been taken away from her long ago because that was the law and the young one was the only family she had left.It had been a difficult choice, yet Miriel was a seer and that was the precise reason she was chosen. With their part of the bargain, the girl was going to give up all her future offspring, and paradoxically that was going also to make her more powerful.Much more powerful than what she already was destined to become. All was needed after that was knowledge and she was bound to acquire that with time. The young witch would have become one of the most powerful tools in her hands to protect all her witches. The sacrifice of one would have benefited all.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOThe young witch had gone through with what had been asked but when the ritual had finished, while she moved away from the circle of power, she felt very weak.As the palace faded from her vision, she felt two strong arms holding her before all went black.King Thraunduil witnessed the ceremony from far and when Miriel fainted he was there to hold her before she touched the floor. She is so light... so young. It was the first time that the queen had seen his carefully crafted composure fall. Not even when he had spotted the young half-breed within the dwarves’ delegation, he had such a reaction. The young seer had touched something deep inside. She is so pure that even you had to show your heart.Thranduil took the girl to the queen's chambers and he carefully laid her on the bed.Once you were like this... she had known him for a long time... where is your heart gone?Did you let it go with her?- She will be fine. - it was more a statement than a question that brought her back to reality.- She will be. - she went closer to move an unruly strand of hair from the girl’s face.Llyal-Eresel had sent everyone away, it was only them in the room.- Who is she to you? -She turned to look at the elf king. Was it so obvious? She should have been more careful.- Fine, keep your secret. - he turned around to leave.- Think, what you like Thranduil but it does not make you any less responsible. -No matter how he acted she knew he felt guilty. She knew by the way he carried the young girl.- Miriel... I should have known; she has elvish blood. - all kindness had faded. His walls were up again.- I have not tried to conceal it. - she countered- I guess you had just been too busy with 'your young dwarf' or probably trying to get the payment from his king. -Thraunduil laughed - The stingy dwarf does not deserve him in his ranks. - he let out.- And you think you do? – she retorted. But Thranduil was looking again at the girl laying on the bed.- She likes him, 'my young dwarf' - he said almost teasing.- My guards have spotted her climbing in and out of the guests’ chambers. -- I never thought that the king would listen to the guards' whispers. - she mocked him.And he ignored her - Imagine what a match that would have been. -Probably...When the young witch did not show up for breakfast for the first time since they had met her, her friends worried.Thorin waited, dreading to find out that finally, his grandfather had agreed to the deal.Vili worried endlessly for his sweet witch. He was nervous and frustrated, and he could not concentrate on the training practice or on anything else, as time went by their worries only grew.OOOOOOOOOThree days had passed, and the blond youngster had reached breaking point.- I'm going. I tell you, Thorin, I am going! - he said pacing the room again.- Stop walking up and down - his friend grunted. - You'll dig a hole. -Vili ignored him - I am going. -His friend grabbed him - Where do you think you are going!? -- I need to know what happened to her. - he cried in frustration. The prince sighed - You won't move from here unless I tell you. -He said but it did not sound like an order. The dark-haired dwarf was as frustrated as he was.He did not want his friend to get into troubles.Yet they both needed to know what happened to the witch, to their friend.Vili broke free from his grab and turned around to face him.- I am not taking any order about this, not from you, not from anyone! - he said decidedly.Thorin took a deep breath - And I am not ordering, I am asking 'cos I don't want you to get in troubles. -The blond dwarf was surprised, and his friend read it in his eyes.- Damn it Vili! I feel responsible, for her. All this was 'cause of my grandfather's decision. - he continued.- We should not have come. You would not have fallen for a witch you can never have and no harm would have come to her. -Then Vili sighed. Was his friend, right? Was that journey, a mistake? He ached inside, if they did not travel from Erebor to strike a deal with the queen of the witches, he would have never met his sweet girl ... yet.Are we the villains here? No, Thrór is and so is the stupid queen! Damn her!He sighed again.- Wait here I am going to talk to the king. - Thorin said.- Thorin... I ... -- Wait! I'll be back soon, I promise. - with a knot of sadness weighing on his soul the prince left. One hour, two hours.... The prince was not back...Another hour...Poor Vili could not wait any longer. He left a note for his friend. It read - Sorry. I won't get into trouble. -- What a lie - he thought as he left through the window not even too sure which direction to take.Once his feet touched the ground he went left, thinking that was the direction that Miriel usually took.Yet the foliage was thick, lush and very green; all the plants and bushes looked the same, soon he was lost.Still, he had no intention to give up.He turned following what he thought was the right path but then he found himself back to where he started. This is hopeless. He sighed sitting on a rock but then he heard someone in the bushes.Someone was laughing at him.He turned around and when he turned back, she stood right in front of him.- Are you lost, Master dwarf? -She was Miriel’s friend, the one that came to call her every day from the garden, he had recognized her voice. She was also the same witch that was with her when they met in the forest, he had recognized her giggle.- Come with me. -He looked at her suspiciously. The girl sighed - You have no choice, you know? -He snorted and began to follow her.All in a sudden it seemed that the path had open up in front of them and it had become so easy to follow.Soon they climbed back to the palace from another window.- Now, wait here. -He still looked at her with suspicion. She grimaced - Here! -He nodded. The room was dark with many doors and the only light came from the window where they had got in from. The young dwarf wondered what kind of trouble he had got himself into.Yet he did not wait too long to find out.His 'new friend' came back followed by a much taller figure and as they came to light, to his great surprise, Vili recognized the queen of the witches. He felt completely glued into place. Now I am in trouble.Llyal smiled warmly - You are Miriel’s young friend. - she said in a melodic voice.Up close the ruler of the enchanted kingdom was even more stunning, he could not move his eyes away.He nodded but did not smile back reminding himself why he had got into that situation.- Where is she? Is she well? - he looked straight in her eyes trying to pretend that he was in control but his voice betrayed his concern. For the first time, the queen managed to get a closer look the young dwarf that had taken her seer's heart and Thranduil's attention. She liked him immediately. He truly cares about her.His eyes were sincere, they had a special light and a sense genuine naïve goodness came from him.You are still untouched by the evil of the world as she is.You are made for each other. She was pleased with Miriel's choice, but sadly that could not change anything for the two youngsters. If this was another place, another time... maybe you could have been happy.- Do you know who I am? - she asked. He nodded again worried that his troubles were getting bigger.- Llyal-Eresel queen of the Witches of Carn Dûm - he said bowing a little. She nodded quite pleased.- She is well, master dwarf. - she smiled again. He breathed a sigh of relief.- And probably she will be pleased by the selfless concern that got you into such troubles. -- My troubles don’t matter. What happened to her? -- You should not worry. -She said calmly still smiling but that was not the answer that Vili was looking for.- What have you done to her? - he could not stop himself from asking. She pondered at the question, she did not like the sound of it.She knew that he was well aware of the deal that she had made with Thrór.The queen of the witches buried her guilt inside.- Like I said you don't need to worry. You will see her again soon. - She said calmly.- Why her? She did not deserve to be treated like that. -The young dwarf was letting his emotions flare and the witch that had brought him to the queen moved forward.Llyal dismissed the girl, the blond dwarf was not a threat.- There are bigger forces in motion, my young friend, some that I cannot understand myself. There was no other choice. -- There is always another choice, you just made a bad one. -Vili could not hide his anger and his words came out harshly forcing themselves through the queen careful composure. You have more within you that you know. Yet...She took a deep breath.- One day, master dwarf, you will learn that sometimes you have few choices and making the right one might hurt the ones you love.Yet you still need to make it for a greater good. -I sincerely hope for you that such a day never comes. And with that, she turned around.- You will see her soon. - She told him before leaving.- Wait! -Miriel’s friend put herself on his way.- Stop it! You are lucky that my queen has not ordered to bring you back to your king.Stupid dwarf! Who do you think you are? -He tried to move forward but two taller figures moved out from the darkness.Other two witches had come to stop him.She smirked satisfied. - Now follow me and I will take you back. -He gave an ominous side look to the tall ones and then follow again the young witch through the window into the garden. When they reached his bedroom's balcony before she was going to leave, he asked her.- His Miriel fine? How she is doing? -The witch found him very sweet for his concern. She knew he meant no harm to anybody.- My queen will let nothing happen to her. Believe her, Miriel is doing well and you will see her soon. -As he climbed into the room Vili knew immediately that his troubles had just begun.Thorin and Fundin were pacing the room, waiting for him.All in a sudden his encounter with the queen of the witches seem nothing compared to that.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVili had to wait other two long days before seeing his sweet witch again.Once Miriel felt better she went again to visit them.- Hello, my friends. - she said walking in the room from the balcony's door. Two incredulous dwarves turned to look at her at the same time. She looked slightly paler and maybe even thinner as she stood by the door.Miriel.Vili ran to her, he grabbed her and lift her as she giggled. She was so happy, her dwarf still loved her.- What they have done to you? Are you ok? -- I am fine, my love. - she smiled as he put her delicately down.Vili caressed sweetly her hair.- Are you sure? - he asked concerned as she smiled.Thorin looked her from far with a mix expression.- Is your prince upset with me? - she asked moving closer to Thorin.- You shouldn't have done it. -- He IS upset. - she turned to her sweet dwarf.- I AM upset. - the prince grunted - I am upset with myself. I should have stopped this. -He sighed genuinely frustrated. Both Vili and Miriel felt for him.- There are things that you cannot control. -- I ... I am the prince. What is this stupid title for? Is it there just to infuriate me with stupid rules and court ceremonials? Is it not there for me to right the wrongs at least? - his eyes were truly sad.- You can only do the best you can. -- Well, I have not done it this time. -- You did. - Vili retorted.- My prince sometimes things have to go the way they should, whether you like it or not. -She said sitting on the bed next to him.- It is for a greater good that you don't even know yet. -- Is it? Because you know, don't you? Or is it a fairy tale that your queen has sold you? -She sighted - He is a difficult one. - she said turning again to Vili.- In this case, I know it is for the best.Yet I don't see everything sometimes I have just to trust that it will be alright. -- Well, it doesn't help. - he grunted.- You are still my favourite dwarf prince if it comforts you. - she smiled. The blond dwarf smiled as well; she was just too sweet. And grumpy Thorin smiled as well – Why do you know any other? -She pretended to be seriously thinking about it.- I don’t think so. – she smiled again. The three friends had only a few days left to share.Thrór had got what he wanted so there was absolutely no reason to delay their return any longer.Vili would have never imagined at the beginning of his journey that he would not have wanted to go back home.He was very much torn, he missed his family, he missed Erebor, his mountain...yet he was going to miss lovely Miriel terribly and he had begun to like the palace hidden in the forest with its enchanted gardens.Thorin was upset by the way things had turned out, he wished at least to be able to make his friends happy;yet their problem had no solution and they were going to be separated. One day, when I will be king, I will fix this. One day...- I promised you, not a day will pass without me thinking about you. - the blond dwarf said earnestly.- I know you will, my love. - she said playing with one of his golden locks.- Me too. I just cannot keep you out of my mind. - she continued. He kissed her gently worrying that it could have been the last time he was able to do it.- Will we meet again? -She shook her head touching his face delicately - I don't know. I often cannot see what the future hold for the ones I hold dear. -She sighed, wishing very much it was not like that. She cupped his face in her hands, letting herself get lost in his magnetic eyes. Her touch sent his heart throbbing. How painful it will be not to see you. That was their last night in the enchanted garden.Just before dawn the following morning Miriel was once again in the guests’ chambers. She hugged them as strongly as she could manage.- You take care of yourself. Don't let them force you into anything else. - Thorin told her and his voice was trembling a little.- Whenever you need, remember that you have a home in Erebor if you want. -She smiled warmly - You are sweet my prince. -- You are a friend and I will not forget it. - he told her.Time was running out, Fundin had already gone to set the ponies and he was going to call them any minute. Miriel turned to her Vili.- Goodbye my love. - she hugged him sweetly and he hugged her in return. They did not want to let go of each other, yet...Reluctantly they broke their embrace wondering if they were ever going to meet each other again. The Dwarves' delegation left Carn Dûm just as the sun was lighting the new day. Both friends turned back many times to look at the castle until they could see it no more. The young dwarves kept quiet for days so much so that they almost worried Fundin. One day the old warrior pulled the prince aside.- You need to explain to your friend that it is not possible. - he told him.- It is not logical, not natural. A dwarf with a dwarf, a witch with a witch. -Thorin sighed.Since Fundin had found out he had struggled to accept the fact that Vili had fallen for Miriel so deeply. It was a concept that was completely out of his logic.- My friend, my problem not yours. - he grunted. You can control his heart no more than what I do.- I am here to look after you. -- Me! -- You both! -- Just keep it to yourself! I don't want to hear about it anymore. - Thorin grunted again.- Understood? Not a word! - he was quite upset, and the matter was not discussed ever again. As the days passed as they got closer to home Vili's mood lightened. His royal friend began to worry less yet he knew that the witch was not going to leave his friend’s heart. The blond youngster secretly hoped that one day, somehow, when he was old enough, strong enough...or maybe when his friend was going to be king... one day he was going to be reunited with the love of his life.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Sometimes in life, a sudden situation, a moment in time, alters your whole life, forever changes the road ahead.- A. Ardalan, Baghdad: The Final Gathering -===========================================Once the Lonely Mountain was finally in sight Thorin and Vili realized just how much they had missed their home. They were both very young and they longed for their families, the home comforts and even just to be able to sleep again in their own proper beds.Despite his heartache Vili was happy, yet his thoughts could not leave the young witch. You would have loved it here, my sweet fairy. It was so easy to let his imagination to run wild thinking about what would have happened if he had brought his sweetheart home with him and he loved to indulge in those thoughts. His young mind refused to see any obstacle. He loved her and that was everything it mattered.A Royal welcome had been prepared for the king and his delegation upon their return.Thráin had ordered a majestic banquet to welcome back his father and his son.Once they entered the throne room in their royal uniform both youths were surprised to find their families waiting for them.Frerin and Dis run to hug Thorin as Vili stood next to him smiling very pleased only to find his parents among the crowd of courtesans waiting to welcome the king. His mother moved forward pulling her husband along and they both hug their son.- You look so handsome in your uniform. I am very proud of you. - she whispered to him.And that was one the happiest days in his life. The mountain had not changed everything was the same and yet it all felt quite different after their journey to Carn Dûm.- You changed... you have grown. - his mother had told him as they went back to their quarters after the celebrations.Vili had promised to himself to talk to his mother about his sweet witch as soon as he was old enough and most importantly as soon as he was going to be able to bring her back to Erebor with him. You will love her as much as I do!Yet it was not exactly true that nothing had changed. While his brother was travelling young Nili got engaged to a dwarf dame, one of the young princess' aids.Varla, was her name and she came from a wealthy family, they were due to marry the following year.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAs time passed, the teardrop from the witch was almost forgotten...but young Miriel could not forget her lovely dwarf.Life at the palace had not been very easy following the dwarves’ visit. As the young witch's powers increased, she was taught how to master her abilities. There was no longer time to wander in the enchanted garden.Llyal-Eresel did not want her sacrifice to be in vain. She was determined to use all the tools in her power to keep her witches safe and young Miriel was one of her most important assets.Carn Dûm had not always belonged to the witches or better it had not always belonged to the good witches.Once upon a time, it was the witch-king stronghold. It was a wicked king that used black magic and he had made deals with orcs and with all kind of foul creatures to maintain his power. The elves had removed him allowing the good witches of the East to make that place their home. The problem was that all those foul creatures that were forcibly removed from the place were plotting to get it back and as the witches’ numbers declined Llyal needed to increase her strength to hold on to her kingdom. The young girl followed her queen's orders and she applied herself to master her powers. She had always enjoyed her life at the palace, yet at times she let her imagination run wild and she had begun to fantasise how life would have been outside the castle. What her life would have been with young Vili...… he was always in her thoughts.Yet she wondered ... do you still remember me, my sweet love? Her closest friend Zefyra, used to tease her when she found her with dreamy eyes looking out of the window onto the enchanted garden.- Zefyra, he is my precious love. I just cannot stop thinking about him! -Miriel complained - I wish I could have kept him here with us. -Her friend's laugh filled the room - The poor dwarf was not your pet to keep. -- Not my pet! My love, Zefyra. My sweet love. – she protested. Her friend loved to tease her, yet she understood quite well her ache…… To long so something you cannot have.Young Zefyra felt for Miriel the same as the young witch felt for the blond dwarf.Yet she had decided to keep it to herself as she knew her friend’s heart was already taken.Mostly she did not want to lose her dear friend.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTime never stops, sometimes it is slow, it almost stands still, others it rushes, and we do not even feel it.That was exactly how it felt for the two young friends. There were long training days when an hour felt like a whole week when Fundin pushed both of them to their limits. There were boring study days that did not want to end;when Vili had to learn the complicated court's etiquette, rules, and laws. There were hot summer nights, when they sneaked out to the city of Dale during the harvest festival to enjoy the fruity wines and the spiced beers or when Vili liked to hide in the upper terraces built in the cuts of the mountain, invisible from the outside;from where he could see the sky and imagine Miriel walking through the enchanted garden looking at the same stars. My lovely fairy, what are you doing now? Do you still think of me?Many times, in the depth of the night the blond dwarf remembered the young witch, her stormy eyes and her sweet laughter.Did she really like me? Was it all a game for her? Was it real? Did she...? Could she...?At times there were doubts but she would never leave his heart.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOThe witches numbers kept on declining far quicker than expected. They were hunted by the orcs, the goblins, the trolls and any foul creature;even some humans had begun to target them deliberately.Things were changing rapidly for Llyal-Eresel and her race. She had begun to spot the signs; some were close others were hidden much further away. She could almost see the net being built but she could not quite pin down who was behind it.Something is moving in the shadow. That uncertain situation worried her, and she spent many sleepless nights. She knew that sooner or later all those that were after them were going to attack. The queen of the witches knew that they were going to come for her castle and for her witches. As much as she wanted to hold on to her home, she had begun to prepare.Soon she would have to make good use of the dwarves’ gold, the payment that she had received from the dwarf king.It was going to ensure that they reached their new home safely. If she could not save their kingdom, she had to ensure the safety every single witch under her protection.Yet, there were so many details to oversee, to plan and to prepare; many enemies were out there looking for their demise. The queen primary scope was to ensure the survival on her ‘subjects’ and as her focus shifted to other matters, someone was ready to take advantage of the situation.Miriel had grown to become a true beauty and young Zefyra was no longer the only one drawn by her charming features. Someone else at the palace became attracted to her.One bright spring day some of the queen’s aids and councillors were taking a break from their duties strolling through the enchanted garden, while some of the young witches were playing hide and seek using the lavish vegetation as cover.Byel, noticed for the first time how pretty Miriel had become. She was the one that had brought the young seer to the castle as a child. The councillor eyes had begun to follow her movements totally enchanted. She had been there all along, yet she had not noticed when the child had transformed into a charming young woman. However, Miriel was still young and very naïve, with her head very much in the clouds thinking about her precious Vili and she did not notice that the elder witch attitude towards her had changed.Yet, Zefyra had begun to pay attention, to Byel. The seer’s friend was older and wiser. While she had been favourably impressed by young Vili and approved of him.She was very much concerned about the elder witch.Something inside her made her feel quite uneasy.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOFew years passed, the young prince and his friend grew.Vili fighting skills had greatly improved making him one of the top warriors in Erebor. Thanks to Fundin relentless training, the fierce competition from other warriors within the mountain kingdom and surprisingly also thanks to the neighbouring king. Unexpectedly, and to everyone amazement, Thranduil had developed 'a sort of liking' for the youngster.Picking up on that Thrór had begun to send him to deal with any kind of exchange that he had with the Mirkwood sovereign.Vili ended up being a quite regular visitor of the wooden realm and during his stays, the elf king encouraged him to train with some of his guards. The prince's adviser knew very well that the king had no complete trust in him as he let him see only part of his palace and meet only with selected few of his warriors;yet it was far more than any other dwarf in Erebor was ever granted. At times he had asked himself why?Yet he knew that the answers would have come with time and as every 'good resident of the mountain' he placed no trust in the silver sovereign of Mirkwood.Nevertheless, he enjoyed Thranduil hospitality and took the opportunity to learn as much as he could.- How much do you think he likes you? Only as much as a dwarf can like an elf! -Thorin used to grunt at him whenever he returned to Erebor. The prince did not like how his grandfather was using the situation in his favour.- I know, I know Thorin! I don't trust him either. - Vili kept on telling him.- Never trust him! He has always second intentions. -The prince had always been suspicious of the elf king and he did not like any of the deals that Thrór had made with him.Mostly he did not like how he had made use of his friend.- I think he mainly wants the gems. -- You are naïve Vili! A creature like him will never let you know what he is after. My grandfather should have never made that stupid deal with him. Be very careful. -However, it was not only Vili's skills that had grown. The young dwarf had become taller, one of the tallest in Erebor and a fine stubble had begun to grow on his cheeks. It was not the full-grown bear that he wanted but it had managed to enhance his handsome features. The blond dwarf had become the subject of most of the dwarf dames' talks within the mountain, young and old and even beyond the mountain in the City of Dale.Yet, he almost did not notice the attention as his heart belonged only to one.He had never forgotten his Miriel and he still lived in the hope that one day he was going to bring her to the mountain.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOZefyra was always Miriel’s saviour. She never left her side and helped her to deflect any unwanted attention. In the years, the young witch had become aware of Byel’s attraction to her; and while at the beginning she had playfully dismissed it every time her friend had mentioned it, she had begun to realize that the witch councillor thoughts were taking more of a darker tone.Miriel did not want to create unnecessary conflict at the palace especially considering that there was nearly not a single witch rooming free in Arda. They had all been called back to their stronghold ready for their enemies to strike at any time while preparing their escape route.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVili spent most of his time with the princes and their younger sister.Thorin’s siblings loved him, the blond dwarf was fun.He always managed to bring Thorin's good mood.At times he sided with Frerin to tease his friend, yet they always laugh together.Thráin liked the positive influence that Vili had on his son.The blond dwarf had almost become a member of the family;even Thrór had warmed up to him, mostly he considered him a precious asset.Erebor had grown in influence and in wealth and as his position within the mountain kingdom had become more secure and Vili had seriously begun to plan to go back to Carn Dûm…- Fool. – Thorin told him while they were out smoking in one of the high terraces.- Do you think she will refuse me? – he had asked surprised.- No. She is just another fool. Her queen will refuse. – his friend grunted. The blond dwarf smiled confidently.- No, not this time. I won’t leave without her. -- Then you won’t leave. – Thorin frowned.- Really? – Vili dared him in a mocking tone. The prince worried as his friend confidence seemed beyond arguments.- Come on, you know as I know that she cannot… - he breathed in heavily.- I mean... you won’t have any son. -- I thought you did not believe in that story. – the blond dwarf was still teasing him.Yes, you are beyond arguments. What can I do?- It does not matter what I believe. I cannot let you go. -Those words touched the prince’s adviser. It was his way to tell him that he was important.- Does it bother you that she is a witch? – he asked then. That through Thorin for a second.- No of course it doesn’t! - he frowned.- Good. – Vili smiled, happy with his sincere answer and moved to go back inside the mountain. It occurred to Thorin then how much his friend had grown. He had brought that conversation exactly where he wanted.- I need you too. – the blond added cheekily as he walked through the door.- Oh please! Go and hug a tree. - Thorin grunted. His friend chuckled.- I am going to see our ‘friend’ in the Wooden realm tomorrow. – he added jokingly.- Plenty of trees there. -- Is that where you get all your clever answers from? – the prince grunted again.- Are you jealous? – his adviser was still pushing his luck.- You seem to forget… -- Let me guess – his friend cut him off. – You are the future king? -- You know, one day that sharp tongue of yours will end you in so many troubles. -Vili looked thoughtful – Is it not what Fundin told you this morning? -- It applies more to you than to me. – The prince answered promptly.- When I return, we’ll plan our journey to Carn Dûm. – his sweet smile had not faded.- Keep on dreaming. And who says that I am coming? –His friend rolled his eyes. You are coming.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOThranduil and his son were looking from one of the balconies inside the palace.- He has improved greatly. Probably one of the sharpest dwarves that I had ever seen… -Legolas murmured still trying to grasp what made that young dwarf different from the others. What made him important to his father.- Enough idling with the dwarf. We have important matters to look at. –The king hurried his son;he had carefully hidden his secret from him, and he knew that the prince was getting very close to the truth, so he never let him get too close to his guest. The elf was not quite ready for his son to find out about his ‘little project’.They left Vili to his training with two of Thranduil’s personal guards. The king had returned to the same spot, much later, to spy again on the youth. Two days before he had received news confirming that his instincts were right. The envoy that he had sent to the Gray Mountains had found the information he needed. In the veins of that young dwarf run the blood of one of the mighty of the Firstborn. The silver sovereign did not waste any time and he sent the same envoy out again to look for Vili’s forefather.Young one, you will not believe what is about to befall you…you will not believe your luck… and mine.Finding the lost descendant of one of the greatest warriors of his race and returning him to his family was going to bring him immense pride and surely a very precious alliance. Thranduil did not even want to contemplate the possibility that the young dwarf warrior might shun his prestigious ancestor. Then the elf decided to test the youngster himself. He walked down right into the fighting circle, and with a simple gaze, he took the place of one of the guards. The blond youth gulp as he turned seeing the king.- Don’t be intimidated. – he tried to encourage him, but his voice was cold.- I am not. – Vili looked at him straight in the eyes.Bold.He made him smile.Let’s see what you’ve got.The dwarf bawled graciously to Thranduil and then wasted no time to cross his sward with the king. His movements had become more elegant, his fighting style more connected and refined. The Mirkwood’s sovereign was pleased.Mostly the young dwarf gave him a good fight before being overpowered.Thranduil smiled arrogantly… after all, he was still a dwarf.- Well done. – he said coldly turning away. And Thorin’s words came back to Vili.- How much do you think he likes you? Only as much as a dwarf can like an elf! -He took a deep breath. One day I’ll find out what are your reasons. The young warrior was extremely wary of the elf king.Vili left the woodland realm the following day.He took his time crossing the forest smiling just thinking about Thorin…Go and hug a tree. Then his thoughts turned once more to his sweet love. The dwarf was still young but very determined. It felt it was time to start planning his journey to the Witches Kingdom.A strange sense of hurry had got hold of him lately, about his plan to marry his lovely witch.Maybe it was because he had been dreaming a lot about her… he missed her so much…… maybe he was worried the more time passed the more she was going to forget about him…… maybe he just needed to see her.Yet that sense of urgency had grown inside him no matter how much he had tried to bury it.It did not want to live him alone.Maybe Thorin is right I have spent too long in the company of the elves.I have started to think like them… them and their stupid instincts.Riding through the dense forest he shook his head.I’ll plan it well and then we’ll go to get her.It was late afternoon when he reached Dale.Vili had to stopped there to buy a few things that his mother had asked for.He sighed as he entered the town.He really just wanted to go home but he had promised her that he was going to get her what she asked before he left the mountain. And then it happened…That was the day when everything changed for everyone.First, there was a noise like a hurricane coming down from the north.A strong dry wind came sweeping through the town. The pines in the mountain cricked and crack in the hot wind.He heard them, his pony neighed nervously. He patted him to calm him down, yet he felt the fear rising inside him.I need to get back to Erebor. NOW.However, before he could do anything the animal soared suddenly throwing him to the ground. That’s was when he saw it.It darkened the sun in the sky.A huge red-golden dragon, his scales shining in the bright sky.He was a fire drake from the North. He attacked the town first.Poor Vili did not know the meaning of sheer terror before that day.It was not himself he worried about, as the dragon set the town on fire.He worried for his home and those he had sworn to protect …his prince, his king, his family and friends…He knew immediately that Dale had no value for that monster, his eyes were set on another prize…Erebor.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Things we lost to the flame
Things we'll never see again
All that we've amassed
Sits before us, shattered into ash.
- The things we lost in the fire – Bastille -==============================An almost impenetrable wall of magic was surrounding the Carn Dûm castle.
It had been there for a while; it was created to protect all the witches that were living in the castle as the danger had come closer and closer.
The woods were no longer safe so Miriel, Zafyra and all their friends were confined to the palace and its enchanted gardens.
Llyal Eresel knew all too well that they would have to leave their home very soon, but she was not going to make it easy for her enemies to regain the castle.
Her councillors, her guards, her warriors and all the inhabitant of the small kingdom were ready and prepared.
The queen was also counting on Thrór’s aid, when the time would finally come, to provide a few of his warriors to help their escape.Miriel had an oppressing worry that had been rising inside her for many days.
She was afraid but, despite all her efforts, she could not see what was behind it.
Her vision was clouded yet she knew that the enemies were coming.
She was anxious for all the other witches, they were her ‘family’, and for her home.
The more she tried to look, to understand that ever-growing fear, the more she could not see, and it never occurred to her that the danger that she was feeling was not for her own kingdom but for her friends. One sunny afternoon while she was in the palace’s kitchens, she picked a tray full of cakes and she felt a strong heath.
The young seer dropped the tray instantly with a loud bang.
She could not quite understand what had happened to her as that sensation faded away quickly and the tray was not hot at all.
Zefyra came to her concerned.
- I am fine. I don’t know what happened… - she managed to say.
Then the palace around her faded once more and the heat returned, stronger and it burned.
And there was fire everywhere and everything was ablaze.
She screamed in pain as she felt her right-hand burning.
She screamed as she saw the giant dragon set the town on fire.
She screamed in horror as everyone was burning.
Then she turned and she saw the mountain, a place that she had never seen before in her life, yet she knew it was Erebor…
her friends had described it in such detail that she was sure it was the mountain kingdom.
- Dragon. – she whispered as she felt to the ground totally overwhelmed.
Zefyra called her terrified but she did not answer.
The palace's guards came as the young witch called for help.
They called the queen and she ordered for Miriel to be brought to the royal chambers.
The girl was delirious and the queen, a few of her councillors and high witches attended her as she slept in and out of consciousness.
Poor Zefyra was terribly worried, nothing like that had happened before. Seeing her concern the queen allowed her to stay next to her friend.
Llyal Eresel took her time with the young seer to obtain from her the information she needed.
The ruler of the enchanted kingdom knew it was bad news, she was sure, but she could not have imagined how bad.
Once she knew, once she was able to figure out Miriel’s vision, she immediately sent a message to warn Thrór and another to alert Thranduil.
Yet, she was fully aware it might have been already too late.
As part of the deal with the ruler of the enchanted kingdom, Thrór had agreed to send some of his best warriors to escort the witches safely out of Carn Dûm. when the time came, to their new home wherever that might have been. She desperately needed his help to ensure the survival of her witches.
What was going to happen if the Erebor was going to fall?
The faith of her own kingdom was inevitable.
Still if the Lonely Mountain was going to be taken by such a creature…
What kind of darkness was about to rise?
No Erebor cannot fall.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
The sun was shining on the mountain kingdom.
It was a bright day, so bright that some of its light had managed to enter the dark hallways of the fortress.
However, it was only the outer halls, the one close to the façade of the mountain that benefited from the sunshine, as Erebor was a mountain kingdom carved and shaped in majestic beauty deep in the rock.
Its grandiose entrance was nothing compared to the richness that laid inside; and it was not only the valuable metals and gems, precious and semiprecious stones that made its beauty.
It was the great dwarves’ craftmanship and dedication that had taken to transform a bare cave into its glorious splendour, intricate geometrical designs and ancient runes run through its walls from the great halls through to the smallest of corridors.
However, the key to all of its magnificence was just simple stone, for the dwarves were its masters.
It was not just carved stones, yet they would have been already enough due to the complexity of the design.
It was really just the stone, marbles and alabaster of every colour that existed in Middle Earth skilfully chosen to trick the eye and give the impression that there was real light inside the mountain even in its deepest corners so that even with few carefully placed torches there was no one corner of the mountain that was ever in darkness. In that perfect fortress, a young princess has been up almost since dawn.
Dis, the youngest of Thráin’s kids, was a pretty dwarfling with big blue curious eyes and long dark hair and she was full of uncontainable energy.
Growing up, in Erebor as the youngest member of the royal family, without a mother and two older brothers was no easy.
Yet, the young princess was very clever, and ‘court savvy’.
She knew every single secret passage within the mountain, so she had become a master at being present without being noticed.
At the tender age of ten, she already had a mind for political intrigue, and she knew every story that went around the kingdom.
- Little Lady, you are a tough nut. – her youngest brother Frerin used to tell her with a smug smile before smothering her in a huge hug.
- A clever nut, I would say. – his friend Vili used to add.
- Little Lady? Little brat I would say. –
Thorin always grunted before sending her away, back to the dwarves-dames’ quarters and not before getting from her the latest ‘news’.
Young Dis was his best informer.
Frerin was her favourite because he always covered for her and he never spared any hugs.
Also, he was clearly unable to refuse any of her demands.
Thorin… well, he was difficult, and he liked to give orders to everyone;
yet she was a ‘clever lady’, and she understood his position.
Vili used to say he loved to be in charge and actually that was what she and Frein needed;
after their mother’s death, many years before Thráin had not stepped in to fill the void.
He was the king’s son, and he was always extremely busy and probably preferred to avoid that task.
Her father had always made sure that they had everything they could possibly desire, yet probably he did not know how much they wanted to be a little closer to him.
So Thorin had stepped in when he was needed, and her grumpy brother was the one that came almost every night to tuck her in bed and wish her good night.King Thrór, her grandfather, had plans for her, he always had a different project for all his subject, even little Dis knew that.
A few years earlier the Erebor’s sovereign had invited one of his cousins to the royal court to take care of the young princess.
She needed to become a proper royal, not a spoiled child.
She was growing and he knew that soon he was going to be able to secure a wealthy marriage for her and with it an important alliance.
Everything and everyone were an asset to the king, everyone was important to increase his wealth.
Dame Thriena was Thor’s eldest cousin, and she took the task of ‘forging’ the young princess very seriously.
Under her guidance young Dis had learnt a lot, not just court etiquette, laws and ceremonial but also how the ladies of the court helped to shape the politic of the kingdom and how they could make its fortune or its demise.
That day Dis had woken up early and she had ran to Erebor’s kitchens to get her breakfast before it even reached the royal table.
After the morning meal, nobody could have stopped her.
Following her early breakfast, she ran to look for Frerin and she found him training with the guards.
She knew already that Thorin was busy with their father and that Vili had been sent once again to the Mirkwood forest.
Her brother was so happy to see her as she pushed him to take a much-needed break.- What do you think king Thranduil wants from Vili? –
She asked sitting casually on the floor next to her brother.
- Why? does he want something? –
- You are naïve. Of course, he does!
He would not keep asking for him otherwise. – she said shaking her head.
- Maybe. – her brother was not too concerned; his mind was clearly somewhere else.
- What is bothering you? – she asked looking straight at him.
Frerin looked around carefully.
- I need to get to Dale tonight. – he whispered.
- Why? – she whispered back very interested.
- I need to bring someone a present. – he confessed.
- A girl. – her eyes opened with excitement as she smiled quite thrilled.
Just the thought of Dale was exciting her. She was not allowed to go there.
She had only been let out of the palace a few times and with a full royal escort.
- Obviously. – he said unrepentantly.
- Thorin will kill you. – she smiled.
- Thorin won’t know about it. If you don’t tell him. – he smiled back.
- He will find out; you know he will. –
- You should have brought me breakfast you know. – he deliberately changed the subject.
The princess should have tried to dissuade him, yet she knew he would not have listened.
- I need to go before they find me here. – she said leaving a cake in his hands.
- You are the best. – he smiled.
Frerin loved his little sister.
Once she returned to the dwarves-dames’ quarters she arrived right on time to catch a very interesting conversation, while two of the palace’s maids were tidying up the royal’s quarters…
- Aye Lady Threina, I’ve heard them with these ears.
Young Ruvna and Brundis were talking about the prince’s adviser as if was the prince himself… no, more than that.
And the lad hasn’t got even a full beard yet. Imagine! I don’t know what they see in him! –
Dyrvi said while fixing the pillows on the large sofa.
Listen to her! She is such a rumours' spreader!
Yet Dis bit her tongue, nobody had noticed her, and she was eager to listen.
- Vili is a good lad. – Melgira rebuked her while picking up the laundry basket.
– You should not talk like that. -
- I never said anything bad about him! I was talking about all those young lasses crazy over him. -
She had finished with the sofa and had gone to help the other maid.
- What you said is not nice! -
- What I said is true! – Dyrvi retorted.
- He is the prince’s adviser! – her friend reprimanded her once more.
- He has only a bit of stable, and at his age… if you don’t mind me saying, he should have a full-grown bear. –
She turned to stare directly at Melgira.
The older maid was always quite animated when she was talking.
– Mind you now, that seems to run in the family, look at his brother! –
She said leaning in.
- Still… - the other maid was wiser, calmer and most importantly she remembered her manners when in the presence of the royals, so she kept her voice low.
Melgira knew that sometimes her ‘friend’s manners’ had got her in troubles with Lady Threina but not that day.
The older dwarf-dame was intrigued by the gossip.
- Still what? – Dyrvi shouted from inside the wardrobe where she had gone to check if any of Dis clothing need to be added to the laundry's pile.
- Vili has a certain charm. – she admitted.
- Oh no. Don’t tell me you are another one Melgira?! - she said turning around bemused.
- See Lady Threina, that's what’s happening. – she turned quite loudly to her mistress.
The old dwarf-dame sitting by the window smiled without lifting her eyes from her work.
- Oh, stop it Dyrvi you are just jealous and maybe you like him too. –
The younger maid replied with a little temper.
- Me?! Jealous?! Of who? You? Did you hear her? –
She turned quite theatrically to the ladies sawing by the window standing with her hands on her hips.
Lady Threina shushed her with a simple hand gesture.
- You are a married Melgira. You should feel ashamed of yourself! –
she said close to her friend.
- There is no harm in looking. – she whispered back.
- Listen to her Lady Threina and like her many others here in Erebor and not only here.
The women of Dale, the young unmarried ones and the married ones as well! –
Dyrvi could not help herself. She was again too loud and too direct.
- Please stop it. There is no need for it. –
Lady Threina quieted both of them.
The two maids had collected all the laundry and they began carrying it out of the door.
Dis had gone to sit quietly by the other small window, looking at the valley below but still listening.
Lady Threina had called Melgira back as she was leaving the room.
The young maid had returned to the room bowing slightly in front of the old dame.
- Tell me instead, have you heard any other rumours?
Do you know if young Vili has already a favourite one in his mind? – she asked.
- No ma’am, the lad seems to be not interested in anyone at all. -
- You can go back to your duties. -
She dismissed her with a simple hand gesture.
Melgira bowed again and quickly exited the room.
Lady Threina then turned to Fundin’s wife.
The other dwarf-dame was focusing on her needlework.
- You’ve been quiet my friend, what do you think? -
- About the young lad? He has a good influence on Thorin.
My husband tells me he is as good as gold and loyal.
He is very proud of him and you know my Fundin he doesn’t talk much. -
Threina nodded.
- He seems to be at the centre of lots of rumours. – she said.
- He is at the centre of all the ladies’ attention. – Her friend smiled lifting her gaze.
- Uhm… he should not be at the centre of all those rumours… not being so close to the royal family. -
The king’s cousin was keen to stop any kind ‘false stories’ related to the royal family or anyone close to them.
- I think the poor lad cannot help it. – Fundin’s wife replied.
- And I think we should help him, then. – her royal friend replied.
The dwarf-dame put aside her work.
- I think it is time we find him a suitable match. – the king’s cousin said.
- He is very young Threina… - her words were met by a sceptical look.
- He is much younger than his brother was when he got engaged and Nili was still very young. –
She pointed out.
- I don’t want him married yet, just engaged to stop the rumours. – the old dwarf-dame dame replied.
Young Dis knew that the pair was behind Vili’s brother engagement.
The two dwarf-dames loved to plan everyone’s future to suit their vision of the court.
‘Ladies politics’, Thorin used to call it.
- They always plot and plan. Playing dwarves like a game of chess. – he used to say. -
- Don’t let them involve you in their manoeuvrings. -
She did not like it, yet she knew that was exactly what the ladies of the court did, and she was very much afraid that she would not have been able to escape that game forever.
However, her loyalty laid with her brothers and she had immediately decided that she was going to tell Thorin that same day what she had heard.
Her brother was not going to allow those two to marry or even to promise Vili to anybody.
- Who have you got in mind? – the conversation about the blond dwarf's future was not over yet.
- Uhm, Dudna’s daughter… she is a real beauty.
I am sure she will suite him very well or even Varla‘s sister she comes from a good family.
Two brothers and two sisters. –
Lady Threina said enthusiastically already picturing the engagement and maybe even the wedding.
Dis felt almost sick. She could not stand their machinations.
If you two think I will let you give me the same treatment. You can forget about it!
You and anyone else. I will marry whomever I want!
- What’s her name? -
- Who? Varla sister? -
- No, Dudna’s daughter. -
- Ketila I think. -
- I think she will be a better match. –
- Really? -
- Yeah, Vili is already Thorin’s adviser he doesn’t need to marry into an important family.
He needs to marry the prettiest Darrow dame in Erebor to send any possible suitress away and stop all talks. -
Lady Threina looked thoughtful and then she agreed with her friend.
- You’re right! And his mother will be delighted. Ketila is lovely. -
The pair kept on chatting, but the young princess was tired of that conversation.
Unwillingly she went to pick a book from the shelf.
She was merely trying to busy herself before anyone noticed that she had nothing to do and assigned her an even more tedious task.
All she wanted was to be able to decide what to do with her time.
Not that her brothers had any luck in that sense, yet she envied them; she would have rather trained all day with Fundin than play ‘ladies’ politics’ with his wife.
Unfortunately for the princess, she was not forgotten for too long and she managed to free herself only in the afternoon when Varla came to her rescue.
The princess’ aid convinced the two ladies to let Dis come with her but as soon as they left the dwarves-dames’ quarters, they exchanged an accomplice glance and they took different directions.
Varla went to see her Nili in his workshop and the princess ran through the palace to find Thorin.
She ran through the stones decorated corridors, passing by elegantly decorated chambers that soon she was no going to see again.
As she reached the main hall, she saw Thorin getting out to the balcony above the giant entrance to the Mountain kingdom.
She turned around and took the stairs to reach the high corridor that was going to take her to the terrace and that was when it happened.
A hot wind rushed in and then there was a mighty roar, and the mountain shook like it never did before. She was almost on the balcony and she fell.
- Dragon. – she heard her brother shout as she was still on the floor.
The young princess felt sheer terror for the first time in her life.
Thorin saw her and he saw Frerin right behind her.
- Take her! – He ordered him.
- Take her to safety. – he shouted again.
- Thorin. – Frerin protested.
- Get out of here! – he shouted back as he prepared to defend his kingdom.
The younger prince grabbed his sister as she called her eldest brother and they run.
- We cannot leave him. – she cried.
- I am not leaving him. I need to get you out of here and I’ll come back. I promise you. -
They ran as everyone was screaming, as the thick smoke and the strong smell of burning flesh were filling the halls and the corridors.
They ran as their world had begun to crumble.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Vili was trying desperately to get out of Dale as the fire spread everywhere and debris kept on falling from the burning buildings.
Every time he found a way to escape something fell to obstruct it.
He was getting more and more desperate when suddenly he spotted a child crying in the middle of the road, miraculously untouched.
The sound of the town crumbling on itself was so loud that it completely covered the little boy’s voice but Vili could not ignore him.
He ran to him and grabbed him.
Yet, he did not know where to hide. Quickly scanning his surrounding, he spotted a metal door fallen out of its door frame and he ran to it.
He managed to slide beneath it with the child as the dragon descended once again on the town.
The beast breathed fire once more and it spread everywhere, as the young dwarf and the little boy hid under the door shaking.
Vili grabbed the doorknob with his free hand to hold it down praying in his heart that the monster had not seen them.
He needed to get to Erebor, to Thorin, to his parents, his brother.
He had to save them, he could not simply end up roasted in Dale.
As Smaug breathed fire again the flames reached the door, and the metal heated up, but the brave dwarf did not let go of his grip and… it burns, it burns!
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Those candle flames were like the lives of men. So fragile. So deadly. Left alone, they lit and warmed. Let run rampant, they would destroy the very things they were meant to illuminate. Embryonic bonfires, each bearing a seed of destruction so potent it could tumble cities and dash kings to their knees.Brandon Sanderson - The Ways of Kings ==========================================================================The silver sovereign of Mirkwood watched the young dwarf as he left his kingdom. His gaze followed him until the trees hid him completely from his view.Soon you will know...He thought as he walked through the palace to reach his study. He was thrilled at the idea to see another one of his projects reach its completion, and quite an important one actually.Finding the offspring of one of the firstborns were going to bring him new precious alliances. It was time for the light to shine again on his kingdom.OOOOOOOOOOOOThe day had begun well. The bright light of the sunshine had managed to creep deep into the mountain, illuminating some of the darkest corners of the dwarven kingdom. It brought out magical colours from the different stones that were decorating the walls creating intricate drawings. The young prince had been up bright and early and he walked along those embellished walls to reach his grandfather's study as he had a meeting with him and his father. There was much to be discussed, the expansion of the mines deep into the mountain, their current dealings with the people of Dale and the possibility of new a agreement to be struck with other important settlements beyond the Mirkwood forest.Thorin was sure it was going to take the whole morning, probably well into the afternoon; and while he knew he had to attend and some of the discussions would have probably interested him, his mind was on something else.Vili was due to come back that day and he really could not wait to see him again as he had much planned for them. The young prince was desperate for an adventure, since the long trip to Carn Dûm he had not really been able to leave the castle and he was longing to travel again. He was never going to admit it to his adviser but the thought of another trip across Middle Earth had begun to play in his mind.A long journey, that was exactly what they both needed!Thorin knew how much his friend was keen on getting his sweet witch back but he also knew that it was way too soon, Vili was still young.Although the possibility, the idea of having Miriel in Erebor played in his mind and he knew it would have been quite an entertaining experience. He had reached the study before anybody else and while he waited a wave of youthful curiosity took him as he started to examine the different papers and objects on the table.Something on the desk took his attention just before he heard the door and almost without realizing it slipped into his pocket.Sometimes things have a way to happen the way should a cheeky witch had told him once.As expected the meeting lasted quite a long time and it was only in the late afternoon that Thorin managed to finally have some time to himself. They had been locked in his grandfather's study all morning, they even had lunch in there. His head had been filled by numbers and calculation and he was desperate for a breath of fresh air.The prince walked through the grandiose halls of the palace to reach the balcony above the main entrance and as he walked he admired the beauty of his kingdom, majestically carved into stone. Once he reached the balcony he took a deep breath and let his eyes cherish the view, all the way down to the lake. Few dwarves approached him, some needed to talk to him and others just wanted to greet him. While it was there just enjoying a breath of fresh air a hot dry wind began to blow across the plain and reached the mountain. The trees cricked and cracked shaken by the strong wind. The prince and everyone else on the balcony looked confused while a strange sense of agitation took them. Something was about to happen. Then suddenly they saw the City of Dale on fire, it had happened so quickly before their eyes.At first, Thorin could not believe what he was witnessing, then he heard a mighty roar that shook the mountain and before anyone else he turned to the entrance hall and shouted in alarm - Dragon! -He was just on time to hurry everyone inside and the beast was already there. The young warrior could have never expected something like that, his brain was running faster than it ever did.Suddenly he needed to defend his kingdom. He turned to run downstairs to be ready with his soldiers, then he saw little Dis in the corridor. She had fallen but Frerin was there just behind her.- Take her! - he shouted worried about how he was going to protect them.- Take her to safety! - He shouted again reading the indecision in his brother's eyes.- Thorin. - he almost could not hear him. The beast roar was so loud.- Get out of here! - he shouted back as he ran to be with his guards.OOOOOOOOOOOOOLegolas watch his father from far, yet in spite of all his efforts, the king was well aware of his gaze but choose to ignore it.That really upset the young prince, his father choose to ignore him because he was busy with something else, someone else more important than him. What's on with the dwarf... what is so special about him...As upset as he was he still felt her presence and his head turned to her as she began to speak.- What's wrong mellon? -Reluctantly he replied - The dwarf. -The words came out harsher than he wanted, betraying his feelings.- He is leaving. - the red-haired she-elf pointed out the obvious.- Yeah. - but for how long? She knew Legolas had been growing more jealous of the attention that his father had been showing toward the envoy from the Lonely Mountain;not that she had ever got to see him.Thranduil had always been very careful with him, only a few of the palace inhabitants had met him.Yet she understood, or at least she thought she did.The king did not want to fully open his palace to the dwarves of Erebor, and that was a wise decision.Yet, she knew how much Legolas longed for his father's attention and how much he was eager for his approval. The king had been very generous with her but at times his duties had forced him to neglect his son still, she was more than sure that it was not his intention.Thranduil was a complex creature, as ruler of Mirkwood he was always occupied with many issues and yet she had never doubted his love for his son. However, she knew that the loss of his queen had a deep impact on him and on the young prince.- Come. - Legolas called back her attention.- I don't want to waste any more of my time thinking about this. -The young she-elf rushed to follow him.The king could not stop thinking about the young dwarf. If his envoy was going to find Vili's forefather, Thranduil could have been facilitating their meeting very soon... maybe even next month...the infinite possibilities of how that meeting could turn out kept on playing in his mind;when he suddenly got interrupted.- My lord - a brown-haired elf bowled to him.- We received a message from Carn Dûm. -The silver sovereign lifted his gaze immediately. What now?He knew of Lleal Eresel's troubles, yet he did not expect her to need any help from him so soon. However, as soon as he read the message he realized that the trouble was much closer and bigger than expected.Erebor.It took him a second to grasp the significance of what was about to befall Thrór's kingdom and all its possible consequences to his kingdom, to him and to his plans...Vili.OOOOOOOOOOOOOnce the beast flew up again, the young dwarf let his grip go from the door handle. It caused him great pain as the hot metal had moulded into his skin, into his hand.He looked around holding the child that was still sobbing.- Shh, don't worry. I am here. - he said in on breath as he felt his head spinning. He quickly scanned the place and moved to take a piece of cloth that was hanging from a broken window. He then dipped it in a barrel of water that just happened to be there, before rolling the cloth around his hand. There was still lots of water in the barrel so he picked up the boy.- Hold your breath. - he said dipping the child in the water.- And now wait here. - he told him after he put him back on the ground, just before jumping in the barrel himself.Vili hoped that somehow the water would protect them from the heat of the flames. The child had stopped crying and he clung to Vili as they try to find a way out moving through the debris.Destruction was everywhere. Then he saw him.Girion, Lord of the city of Dale was on one of the towers shooting black arrows at the dragon. One almost hit the monster and the archer did not waste time to shoot again but he missed. Finally one hit the target but his armour was too thick it could not pierce through. You cannot kill that beast...- Daaad. - the little boy screamed.Vili looked at him surprised.- Is he your...? -The boy nodded.Great.Then he hurried him through the debris as Smaug descended once more on the town. The child screamed again as he pushed him forward.Everything was set ablaze as they run through broken down arches, climbing the fallen stones while some more fell from the half-destroyed buildings narrowly missing them. The smoke and the heat made their eyes sting. Then there was no way out and they had to run through one of the houses as Smaug was breathing fire on the town again. The young dwarf lifted his gaze and he saw a burning wooden beam as it was about to collapse and he realized that there was no other way, he sprang forward to cover the boy. He could not avoid it and he could not let the child die.Poor Vili heard his own bones crack and then he felt the stinging pain as the fire burn through his wet clothing.Suddenly everything went back.OOOOOOOOOOOThe dragon was confident and rootless in its attack.Within minutes it had completely destroyed the city of Dale and killed most of those who lived there. Then it had turned to his real target, the dwarven kingdom of Erebor. Its roar was so loud it shook the mountain and the souls of all its inhabitants.Everyone paniked and tried ran to safety. Some were driven by fear deep inside the mountain without even realizing and it became their grave. The beast had no fear and it boldly attacked the front door.Thorin and his elite guards tried to hold it back; they were prepared to die and many did as the dragon pushed through them as if they were toy soldiers and began to spread his fire everywhere. The prince was not prepared to let his home be taken without a fight, he did not coward and lead the charge. However, Fundin was wiser and he soon came to realize that there was no hope. He pushed Thorin away from the dragons' claws and he pulled him back.- We need to retreat. -- No! I am not leaving Erebor to this monster. -- Look! - he forced him to look at all the dead soldiers.- They gave their lives for you, don't let them die in vain. Save yourself and our people. You owe it to their families! -Thorin looked once more at the great hall as the dragon was still killing his people. His eyes were stinging- We need to save what we can! -The prince nodded in the end as he realized that all was lost.He ran to the upper levels with Fundin as the fire follow them. They had to push Thrór to leave as the king was reluctant to abandon his precious treasure. Finally, they were outside in the fresh air and the prince was breathing hard to push as much air as he could into his lungs. The dragon's smoke was inside him.He could not believe he had managed to run away from that hell, yet many of his people were still burning in there and he could not get their screams out of his head.He turned the stream of dwarves that were running away. What do we do now? Then he looked around, for his family; Thrór and Thráin were safe, then he saw Dis and Frerin and he waved at them.Thorin ran to his brother and sister and he hugged them like he never did before. When he pulled away he realized that he could not just indulge within that moment.- Come on Frerin! Come and help me we need to take our people to safety. -They left Dis with the dwarves-dames that had made it out of the mountain and told her to walk and follow their people. The two princes begun to direct their people, they need for them to reach the edge of the plain and gather in a safe place.Thorin kept on looking, he spotted Fundin's wife and their sons, you are safe.He breathed a sigh of relief with everyone he recognized. And his eyes kept on searching but in all that horror he could not even give voice to his fear.Vili was not there, that was the problem. Was he still on his way?He hoped.Maybe he had not even reached Dale...and yet what if he did? What if it was in Dale when the beast had descended? No, no... it was too much to bear.He had just lost his kingdom, his home...everything and not only him everyone was without a home. The prince kept calling his people urging them to move as quickly as possible away from Erebor.OOOOOOOOOOO- Mum, mum - the sound of the crying boy brought Vili back. There was a woman standing next to him trying to move the wooden beam.He took a deep breath and the pain made him realize that he was still alive. He could hear the town still crumbling and burning but he could no longer hear the dragon roaring and that worried him even more.If Smaug was no longer destroying the town it meant that he had moved somewhere else.Erebor.The blond dwarf gathered all his force to help the lady to remove the beam from his back.Everything hurt terribly but it worked. He did not even know he had that kind of strength within him.- You saved my son. - she said as she stared at him in shock.- You saved me. - he replied.- We need to get out of here. - he added pushing her and the child to get out away from the fallen down building.- My ... my husband. - she sobbed.- Save your son. - he replied sadly. She gave the dwarf her scall to cover his burnt back.Somehow they managed to get out of Dale but when Vili looked at the mountain the majestic door to the dwarven kingdom was wide open and thick smoke was coming out of it. Thorin, mum, dad, Nili.He just started running in the direction of the mountain.- Come back. - the woman shouted after him.- You are injured. There is nothing you can do for them. -But the blond dwarf was no longer listening.Poor Vili ran like he never did before. He no longer felt any pain, he just needed to reach Erebor. As he got closer he began to run into his people as they were fleeing the mountain. He looked at all of them desperately searching for his own family and his prince. Finally, in that chaos of screaming voices, he reached him.- Thorin. - he called him.The prince clothing was thorned covered in dust.Vili knew immediately that his friend had tried to defend his kingdom from that beast.- Vili. - he replied so unbelievably relieved to see him.Yet his expression changed as soon as his eyes registered the state of his friend.Vili face was darkened by a mix of ashes and dust, so were his clothing. His eyes were wild and he was shaking.- You are fine. - the blond dwarf said with relief.- Where... where are my parents? Have you seen them? - he then asked.- Vili... I... - Thorin moved closer but Vili moved away looking at the mountain. It was chaos and everyone was shouting running for their life.- I need to find them... - the prince adviser said in one hard breath. The prince read the terror growing in the eyes of his friend.- Vili... - his friend called after him but once again he was not listening. His brain was running at a different speed, the speed of fear.He could not let his family burn in there.Yet Thorin was not prepared to lose him.He signalled to some of the guards to stop him and they tried but even as injured as he was they were no match for him. Sheer terror was driving him. While two other Erebor's soldiers tried to stop him, Fundin came behind the young dwarf and hit him. It was the only way.The old warrior could not let Vili run into sure death, sadly he knew that there was nothing that could be done to save his family.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPoor Miriel slept in and out of consciousness for days.Llyal Eresel knew that Erebor was lost and with it the protection that Thrór had promised. She just hoped that she was not going to lose her precious young witch too.Miriel and the young dwarf were so deeply linked that was not possible to puller her back without hurting them both and the queen of the witches was not prepared to do it unless the life of the young witch was seriously in danger. She hated to see her suffer but there was no other choice for those two souls so deeply entwined.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAs Vili fell unconscious to the ground and everyone gathered around him, it became obvious that the prince adviser had been through quite an ordeal of his own. When Fundin touched him the youth groaned in pain.- Don't move him. - someone shouted at the back of the small crowd and try to move closer.Oin got to the young dwarf as Thorin came through the crowd as well.Vili was breathing heavily and was covered in sweat.- He's burning. - Oin said touching his forehead.- What's wrong with him? - the prince sounded very alarmed. The dwarf healer carefully removed the shall that was wrapped around the blond dwarf's body only to uncover the extent of the burns on his back.- Water! We need water now! -Thorin's eyes widen in shock. The whole of Vili's back was burnt. The prince turned to look directly at Oin.- You have to help him! NOW! -The poor dwarf was already doing everything he could. Some soldiers gave him their flasks of water, others rush to get some more. Then out of nowhere through the crowd appeared a stretcher and Vili was put on it.Fear was creeping through the prince, fear and anger. Was he going to lose Vili?It was as if all his worst nightmares were materializing all at once.- Thorin! - Fundin call him back to his duty.- We need to get as many as we can to safety. -But the prince's eyes did not want to leave his friend.- I'll take care of him. - the older dwarf told him.- He has to live! - the younger dwarf ordered grabbing the old warrior.- Tho... -- He has to live, I said! - he shouted and then turned back to the people fleeing, to help them.Fundin sighed. He sincerly hoped he could fulfil that order.Thorin kept on calling his people hurrying them to run quickly as far as possible from the mountain. He took care of the elders ensuring there was someone there to help them.He picked up young dwarflings that had been separated from their parents and he kept on hurrying everyone. Then he saw him, the king of Mirkwood had come to their help.He waved at him to call his attention but the silver sovereign gave a quick glance at the scale of the destruction and turned away.Thranduil refused to help them in their moment of need. The young prince swore that he was not going to forget it.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOThranduil had quickly assembled his army and he had rushed to the Lonely Mountain. It was not just out of his goodness and yet it was a noble gesture but it was mainly protecting his interests.Erebor should not fall. And of course, the young dwarf was on his mind as well.Vili.The silver sovereign had kept on telling himself that it was all in his best interest.Yet, as he galloped towards the dwarven kingdom he had begun to ask himself how much he really cared for the dwarf. As they got closer, he had begun to see the smoke filling the air rising from the ground and he worried.Once they reached the edge of the cliff and they looked down to the city of Dale and then to the plain in front of the mountain, the extent of the destrution was clear.Dale was in ruin and Erebor was lost to the dragon.Thranduil's eyes scanned the scene eagerly looking through the survivors.First, he saw Thráin helping Thrór, then not too far from them some of the dwarves-dames of the court, he spotted them easily, their rich dresses had all been covered in dust.He saw the young princess clinging to an elderly dame, looking at the Mountain in horror. Not far from them was the younger prince directing everyone to run away as fast as possible, urging them to hurry. His eyes could not rest until he found what he was looking for.Thorin was waving at him desperately trying to attract his attention but almost right behind him, he saw a stretcher covered with a sheet and a pair of blue boots were sticking out at one end. Two soldiers were carrying it and he could not see the face of the poor soul that they were transporting but he had recognized the boots.Anger and a strange sense of sadness took him, but he was the king of Mirkwood and he kept his emotions carefully hidden. All was lost and the most logical decision was not to risk the lives of his soldiers.Thranduil turned around and he left with whole his army.Later on, on that fateful day, back at his palace the king of Mirkwood sat brooding. He was upset with Thrór for letting his kingdom fall into Smaug's claws. He had warned him so many times but the greedy dwarf had ignored his advice. He was upset because he had not made it on time and all he had been able to do was just witnessing the destruction that the beast had caused. He was upset because the young dwarf had perished.Mostly he did not like to admit to himself that he had grown fond of Vili.Thranduil picked up the cup in front of him still half full of wine and in utter frustration, he chucked it in the fire. What now?
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Maybe we lost the things we loved then so we could survive losing every thing else.- Susan Beth Pfeffer -=====================================================In the depth of the night, Thorin could not sleep. He was exhausted but every time he closed his eyes the images of Smaug's attack flashed in his head and with it all the faces of the ones that had perished, the ones that could not be saved. The people of Erebor... the people of Dale fleeing the burning town. Some he knew, many he did not and yet they did non want to leave his memories. They had been forever grafted there by the heat of the dragon's fire. Then there was his poor friend, Vili...- Please live - he prayed in his heart - do not leave me alone to face this. -The prince tossed and turned and finally, he got up quietly, worried to wake up his brother and left the cave where the royal family was sleeping. He walked back in the direction on the mountain, he walked and walked without realizing it until he reached the plain where he could see it clearly, the whole of it, his now lost kingdom. He walked to the edge of what was soon going to be known as the Desolation of Smaug. He fell on his knees and he lifted his eyes to the sky in desperation.- What had we done to deserve this? - he shouted to the ghosts that populated the night.- Why? - he shouted again and then he began to sob.The hard façade that he kept firmly in place all day crumbled.Warm tears run to cover his cheeks. What was he going to do? How was he going to save his people? They had lost absolutely everything. He closed his eyes and after a while, he stopped sobbing but the tears did not stop falling. It was then that she came to him.- Thorin - she called him from a distant dream.- Thorin... I haven't forgotten you. -She walked to him.Poor Thorin, he was so sad.Miriel sighed, she could not stay long with him.She had to rush to be with her Vili. She was shaking as she was so worried and scared. The young witch wanted to hug the prince and talk to him but it would have cost her too much. She had to make sure that Vili lived.- Thorin, I haven't forgotten you... -He could barely hear her and he was not sure if she was just a voice in his head.- Remember me, my friend. - she said leaning to kiss his cheek.Thorin eyes sprang open but Miriel was no longer there. The prince looked around confused while her last words still hanged in the air.- Miriel. - he murmured. The memories of his time in Carn Dûm came back to him.- I should have left him there with you he would have been happy and safe. -He thought as he sighed. He had to get back. He dried his tears. He needed to check on Vili.As he turned around he found Frerin approaching.- What are you doing here? - he grunted.- I... I could not sleep. What are you doing here? - his brother asked in return.- I needed some fresh air. -They walked back together.- Go back to sleep. We have a long day tomorrow. - he told his brother.- And where are you going? You need to rest Thorin. -- I need to see Vili. -Frerin looked down and left quietly without adding a word.Thorin walked to the tent that Oin had allocated to the most seriously injured, all the other patients had been assigned some space nearby in the open air. There were simply not enough tents for everyone.Vili had been laid on his left side to allow the burns on his back to heal and to help him breathe. He was deeply asleep, one of the dwarf dames tending him had told the prince that they had given him something to bring down the fever. He did want to ask anything else.He was just too afraid to hear what she was going to tell him.Due to the burns, he had a constant fever that was kept under control but never left him.The prince took his friend's hand, the healthy one, the injury-free one, to hold it.- I won't leave you alone. - he whispered - Don't leave me. - he prayed. He spent the night there only to be wakened by Oin in the early hours of the morning.- You should have gone to rest. - the older dwarf told him.- I am fine. - he grunted. But Oin saw past his abrupt manners. - There is nothing you can do for him now. -He patted the prince in the back. - I have done everything I could. Only time will tell. -Thorin nodded.- If he wakes up if he... gets worst call me immediately. -- I will. - he promised him and the young royal walked out of the tent.He found a barrel with some water and washed his face.- I will be back later. - he told himself looking again at Oin's tent.He then went back to his father. There was so much to do, their people needed proper shelter, food supplies and medicine.Mainly, they needed a home. A home that world felt so empty, it just hurt.He took a deep breath, his father and grandfather had so many worries already, there was no need for them to worry about him as well.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMiriel had been with Vili since the dwarves had escaped the dragon. The blond dwarf that had taken her heart had been unconscious since Fundin stopped him from running back to the mountain to look for his family. The young witch had entered his mind and she had taken him back to the enchanted garden to spare him any suffering and to allow his body to rest and heal.- How did I...? - he had asked her trying to understand... but his head was foggy and she did not allow him to remember the horror of what he had endured.- Don't worry my love. We are here that's all it matters. -She had capped his face in her hands and moved to kiss him. There was only the space of a breath between them and his dark eyes got locked into her perfect features. She was even more beautiful than he remembered. They were lost in a time out of time. They walked and talked hidden by the luscious vegetation and protected by the magic of that place. That was all she could do for her beloved dwarf. At night the crickets serenaded them while the night flowers and the fireflies illuminated their path.As time passed despite all her efforts, Vili had begun to feel the pain. When that happened he turned to her confused- What's happening to me? Why am I here? -So she tried to send away all his hurts and worries infusing his dreams with even more magic.- My love don't worry. I am here with you. - she kissed him sweetly.Worrying how long she was going to be able to keep the incantation. Her kingdom was under threat and her help was needed.Helping Vili and her queen at the same time had left her terribly drained.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOThe Erebor's survivors had spent quite some time at the edge of what had become known as the desolation of Smaug. In there, their number shrank by the day. Many of the severely injured had died from their wounds, some of the elderly had died in the first weeks due to shock and to the severity of the conditions, they had to live in.There were few tents and few places to take cover and many had to sleep outdoor at the mercy of the elements. Food was scarce.Few of the survivors had decided to leave to join their keens on the Iron Hills.Others left to find work in the cities of men to feed their children.Soon the Erebor's population was on the move again, slowly they went further and further from the Lonely mountain. Some of them cursed that place and all its gold. The suffering of his people has hardened the young prince and his siblings.Thorin was restless he did not stop a second, always trying to ensure that his people had enough to survive but unfortunately despite his best efforts, it was not always possible. His time was divided between his duty to his people and being by the side of his sick friend.Seeing his adviser in constant pain was horrible.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODespite everyone's best efforts Vili's burns had got infected so the fever continued to torment him. Many times it seemed it was finally going to leave him alone and Oin had hoped that the youngster was finally going to open his eyes again but then it only came back stronger to torture again his already worn-out body. There had been times when his temperature had picked so high that he was cover in sweat and every breath was a struggle. One day the dwarf healer found Fundin by Vili's bedside. The blond dwarf was dragging heavily on every breath as if he could not get enough air in his lungs.- Does he feel it? I mean do you think it does? -Oin looked at him sadly, it was not the first time he had found him there.- I honestly cannot say. I only hope he doesn't. -- What chances has he got? -Oin was silent.- Tell me. -- He is warning out, Fundin - he sighed.- I cannot tell you how long he will last if he continues like this. -Fundin sighed looking at the youngster. He stroke his golden locks and then turned to Oin.- Thorin is exhausted as well. - he said finally letting out his worries.- He is either trying to find a place for our people, trying to keep everyone feed and clothed or here. -The healer nodded.- I... I never thought... I - he sighed unwilling to continue.- Oin I don't want him to die like this, struggling to get some air into his body.Dying a little with every breath it takes. -- Fundin. - his friend had already sensed where the conversation was going.Yet he could not believe it.- My friend please ... - he continued.- What are you asking me? You know I ... -- Please - he begged, knowing that the other dwarf had understood.- Thorin... -- I am asking you for both of them. Don't let him suffer anymore. He does not deserve it. -He finally said.Poor Oin was shocked, his duty was to help his patients, to heal them how could Fundin ask him such a thing?Yet looking a poor Vili he felt the same as his friend did.The blond dwarf was in constant pain and he seriously doubted that he was going to recover. The youngster had seen what had happened to Erebor and he knew his family had perished, he had no reason to live except hid duty to the royal family...but was that enough? Was it fair to ask more of him?Every breath was agony.Unwilling Oin went back to the table and began to mix the medications.Fundin stroke Vili hairs again.- You've done all you could. - he thought. He left the tent and walked to the river he needed some time alone.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOYoung Dis had gone to the river on her own.Frerin had warned her many times not to wander around alone but that day she refused to listen. She needed to be on her own.She had washed her clothes and hung them on the lower branches of the trees to dry and then she sat quietly by the river listening to the sound of the water.Since the dragon's attack, there had never been a quiet moment.Since the dragon's attack the sound of pain had never left her.It was the sound of the hot wind rushing into Erebor, the roaring of the dragon, the fire creeping in everywhere and destroying the town and the tree on the mountain but mostly it was the people. Dwarves and men screaming endlessly in fear, screaming as they tried to escape, screaming as they burn to death. She could not get those sounds out of her head.Yet, the noise had never stopped. At night the injured weep and whine, while the healthy ones tended the injured and that went on during the day as well.As time passed the most gravely injured died but the noise never subsided and then some began to put their pain into songs that they sang all night long by the campfires. Those sad songs had become her lullaby. As she listened to the river the young princess began to cry.She was not weeping for the elegant mountain fortress and for her the life of luxury that she had lost. She could put up with hard conditions of her new life but she could not deal with the loss. Her friend Varla, her young husband and his parents had never made it out of the mountain. They were by the furnaces on the lower levels with absolutely no chance of survival.Lady Threina had escaped with her but what happened and the harsh conditions they had to live in took their toll. As the weather got colder she had fallen ill and despite Oin best efforts, she had died. These were just some of the people she had lost and all of a sudden she had begun to notice how important they were.Dyrvi and Melgira the two young maids that used to take care of her had perished as well and so many others. Then there was poor Vili that had not recovered since the attack, they were all worried for him and many times they thought he was not going to make it.Thorin had no longer time for anything and anyone other than taking care of the daily running of the camp that had become their new home, trying to find a suitable location for his people and being at his friend bedside. Frerin was not much different, every night he simply collapsed exhausted in his bed.Dis never complained but that day she had enough, she needed time on her own to moan all she lost.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOVili laid in the garden by the white flowers. He loved that spot he was so quiet and peaceful. He breathed their sweet scent.Pretty images came to his head, patterns that he wanted to draw, jewels that he wanted to create for his sweet fairy. It had been a long time since he had made any jewellery ... at the furnace. He had been busy ...Yet, that thought hurt him somehow, thinking of a place outside the enchanted garden made him feel strangely uneasy. He was happy in that place but when she left him he longed for her to come back. That day when she arrived her face was sad.The blond dwarf went to Miriel, he touched her face gently. You are so soft and delicate. My pretty flower.- What is it my sweet fairy? Who is making you sad? -She looked into his deep eyes.- I love you, you know? More than you can ever imagine. -He looked at her puzzled.- Am I making you sad? -She shook her head.- You always make me happy. -- Then... -- Lots of bad things are happening outside. -- Outside the garden? -She nodded.- Soon this place will be no more and I cannot help it. -- We will go somewhere else. - he said confidently but she shook her head again.- We cannot my love. -He looked at her ever more puzzled. She took his hand.- All the witches need to leave the castle.I need to go with them to help. I need to follow my queen. -- I'll come with you. - he said promptly.- No Vili. I am sorry you cannot. - she raised her hand to touch his face ever so delicately. As usual, her touch sent a wave of emotions through him.- Why? Don't ...-- We are not even here my love. - she finally told him.The blond dwarf looked around worried. What was she telling him?- I made this for you - she gestured to the lavish vegetation surrounding them.- But you are not here with me. -The fabric of the dream trembled.- I don't want to let you go but I have no choice.I made this to help you ... live. - her eyes were full of tears. He wiped them gently and hugged her tightly. He struggled to understand what she was telling him.Miriel was so real how could it be otherwise.- I am sorry I wanted this to be better... I did not want to let you go like this. -- Shhh... don't cry wherever I am, I will come to look for you. -- It's not so simple. -- I... -A sharp pain hit him.His right hand hurt as he looked at it.- Vili bad things have happened. Very bad things. -She cupped her hands on his face. The dream trembled again and the young dwarf caught a glimpse of the tent hospital where he laid. His body hurt.- I am sorry I don't want to... please, understand. -He hugged her tighter in response. He understood what she was telling him.- I won't give up on us. - he told her.He felt the pain but he did not know what was coming. He was sure he was going to be bad and while he was prepared to deal with the physical pain he was sure there was going more than that.As the young witch let go of her incantation the memories of what happened began to return. He held to her as long as he could while warm tears began to stream down his face and he finally opened his eyes for the first time in many months.
