In the grasslands of the Kingdom of Novak the sun reached its peak in the sky; heat beating down on the crowded dirt streets in the market. The rainy season had been dry this year; the grass crunched under the children's feet as their parents pushed their way in the streets to the stalls they needed to visit. The bakers' trays had just been refilled, sending cinnamon and nutmeg floating through the air. A flock of people turned towards the stall, having been waiting for the fresh batch. This was Dean's chance. He wiggled his way between patrons, keeping his head low. After checking that both the baker and his wife were busy with sales, Dean slipped a morning loaf in his pants. He looked over to where the fruit salesman was bent over fixing something under his counter, but Dean wasn't willing to take the chance today. He had already had to outrun the guards once this week, and he did not feel like weaving his way through the town again. It might only be a few miles wide, but it's settled in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by open grasslands. The only reason Dean hasn't tried to take Sammy to another town, one where he wasn't known as a thief, is because it's a three-day trip by carriage. Dean could never steal enough food for that trip. Even if he could, should they meet some unfriendly strangers Dean wasn't properly prepared to defend them; and though Sam is freakishly tall he's only thirteen.Dean made it back to the familiarity of the two story clay building at the abandoned edge of town. The roof had long since caved in, but he had cleared as much debris as possible and the floor between the stories was sturdy enough. Once upon a time, it had been a tavern and inn.Sam was sitting on the floor when Dean shut the door behind him. His younger brother looked up as Dean pulled the bread out and showed it off with a cocky grin. "Nice!" Sam stood and took the stale chunk Dean held out for him. Dean hadn't eaten yesterday, and the bread felt amazing in his mouth. The fullness of the food as he chewed slowly, savoring each crumb. Dean would often go hungry to put food in Sam's mouth; happily. When the boys were four and eight, their parents had been in a fire. His mother's last words were carved in his memory."Take care of Sammy." And that's what he did. He stole what they needed. He kept them on the move to throw off the guards. Sam motioned for Dean to sit with him in their makeshift bed of hay covered in cloth scraps, and they finished their bread in comfortable silence. ~<3~Castiel stood at the palace gates with his family as a gold encrusted coach pulled in. It was pulled by six white horses, each dripping with jewels and precious metals which probably made it unbearable for the poor animals in this heat. It was followed by four smaller coaches, less ornate than the first, but still rather extravagant. One of the two coachman of the main coach stepped forward to open the door and a beautiful young woman stepped out. Her long red hair was laced with threads of golden silk, and her gloved hands were balled tightly in her layered blue dress. She was the epitome of beauty, and the definition of rage. The look on her face could probably melt you where you stood, and after one glimpse Castiel hung his head. Gabriel clapped his younger brother on the back.Gabriel was the eldest of the two, but he had abdicated the throne. Even their mother agreed it was in the Kingdoms best interest. A thin, light haired man exited the coach after. A single trumpet sounded, and the coachman cleared his throat."Presenting their Royal Highness' King Lucifer Morningstar and Princess Charlie Morningstar of Purgatory." Several of the higher ranked staff members, who were allowed to attend the event bowed low as the royal guests climbed the palace stairs. Charlie stuck out her hand toward Castiel in greeting. He sighed and kissed his soon to be bride's hand. He could tell she shared his feelings of dejection about this engagement."Welcome. Please join us in the Grand Hall." Naomi, Queen and mother to the princes, said as she turned towards the polished stone doors. Chuck, her late husband had passed when Gabriel was seven and Castiel was five; leaving her in complete control of the Kingdom. Much to her delight.Gabriel was more of a parent to Castiel than Naomi ever was. He was also his best friend. They spent time together outside, hunting, swimming in the lake, and everything else that's improper for a price to do. Naomi lead the way with their guests behind and the princes last. The group settled around a large map table and everyone else was dismissed."I must say, this arrangement could not have worked out better. Charlie has just turned eighteen, and with Prince Castiel being nineteen I'm surprised he hasn't been snatched up." Lucifer pulled several pieces of parchment from his coat and laid them on the table. "Of course, I'll need a few days with my advisors to read this over." Naomi smiled as she pulled the document to her. Charlie was seated next to her father, and across from Castiel. She was paying little attention while fussing with her itching gold-laced braids.Castiel wondered exactly how much she was told about the arrangement. It was hard enough for he himself to get information; but with Charlie being a girl it might be impossible for her, depending on the customs of her Kingdom."We will need to adjust the trade agreement you have set up." Naomi spoke, her eyes still reading. Lucifer sighed and turned to look at his fidgeting daughter. "May I suggest we let the young couple take a stroll?" His tone was calm, but the annoyance was clearly there."I'll chaperone." Gabriel stood quickly, eager to escape the room as well. With a nod from the Queen, the three young royals took a side door out. The atmosphere changed immediately once the door was shut; Castiel sighed with relief. Charlie humphed and crossed her arms as she stared the princes down with light brown eyes. "I take it you aren't too thrilled about this either." Castiel motioned for her to follow him. Gabriel lead them out to the first garden. "No." Charlie sighed, letting her guard down and showing a softer side for the first time since her arrival. Gabriel waited and walked several steps behind them; giving them as much privacy as he could."I've tried everything I can think of to get my mother to call the wedding off." "It's not her fault. My father is the one who threatened war if the trading laws weren't shifted in his favor." Castiel hadn't known that. "Do you have someone special?" The question caught the young prince off guard. "Someone I love? No." Castiel sat on a stone bench at the edge of the palace walls."You're lucky." She sat next to him; but as far away as the bench would allow. Gabriel decided he was okay to wander off. He wasn't worried about the two getting into trouble. No one came out this far into the gardens; especially not in the dry season."You do." It wasn't a question. The words stuck in his throat, as though if he didn't say them, they wouldn't be true."Her name is Rowena." Charlie leaned forward resting her forearms on her legs. A very less then proper posture."Oh." "Just another reason to hate this shit agreement." Castiel snorted, causing Charlie to startle herself right off the edge of the bench. She landed on her butt with a squeak. "What the hell?" She was clearly upset but Castiel's laughter was contagious, and she was quickly giggling. "I have never heard anyone above the rank of Noblemen curse." He said wiping tears from his eyes. "If you liked that we'll get along just fine," Charlie chuckled. Castiel stood and helped her to her feet. She brushed the leaves off but there was a large dirt stain on her rump which would have to be explained away very carefully. "You two couldn't wait for the honeymoon, hmm?" Gabriel chuckled as he reappeared from the hedge maze. Charlie marched over about to pop him in the mouth when Castiel grabbed her by the shoulder."Forgive my brother. He's an ass who doesn't know how to keep his mouth shut." Charlie shook his hand off but kept her eyes on the older prince."I know where you sleep." She leaned in just a bit as she spoke before patting his back and starting off towards the palace. Gabriel was at a loss for words and Castiel ran to catch Charlie with a shit eating grin plastered on his face."Do you really know how to get to his room?" Castiel turned to make sure his brother was following; he was."Nope, but that one always works."

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

The rest of the evening was uneventful. There was very little talking at dinner and Castiel decided to turn in early. He tossed and turned in a restless sleep and woke a few hours before dawn. With a sigh he got up and dressed, knowing he wouldn't be getting any more sleep. He intended to go to the kitchen when he left his room but one of his best friends and second in command of the Royal Guard, Balthazar was posted in his hallway."Bit late for a midnight snack." Balthazar leaned against the wall as he spoke. "Couldn't sleep." Castiel sighed."I have a suggestion. May I?" "Of course." "You're too tightly wound. You need a few hours outside the palace." He had to cover his mouth to keep quiet at the guard’s suggestion. The idea was ludicrous."Let's say you find a way to sneak me out, you would be in serious trouble for letting me go." "Oh, what's that your Highness? You're ill? Too ill to get out of bed you say? Well I suppose I'll just have to stay by your door in case you need anything." Castiel smiled."You are the best, Balth.""I know."Balthazar helped the prince over a section of the wall that was unguarded during the shift change. He insisted that Castiel take a cloak and a pouch of gold."The sun will be on the horizon when you reach the market. I will meet you at the old oak tree just to the West of the wall at three o'clock to help you back in." Castiel smiled in thanks and quickly hopped the wall with his friends help.Despite the hour there were quite a few people in the streets. The glow of the blacksmith's forge could be seen from the start of the market street and the smell of cinnamon made his mouth water. He pulled his hood up and began to walk along the streets. After only half an hour Castiel couldn't help himself and bought a cinnamon and pecan roll. He found a small nook between stalls where he stood to people watch as he ate his treat. By the time he was done there wasn't a single stall that wasn't open. Most stalls stood in front of homes or shops, but others sat freely in the streets. Colorful cloth roofs provided shade for people who looked over goods and food. The streets were packed and Castiel was having the time of his life. He'd been in town before of course, but never like this. He was always in an open carriage during a celebration or holiday. People feared him and kept their eyes low. Now he was rubbing elbows with his people. He was experiencing as much of a normal life as he could. Castiel was browsing over a cloth stall when he heard shouting. A few people ran off not wanting to get involved, but most of the citizens ran towards the noise; curiosity winning over fear. The prince pushed his way through and found Metatron, the head guard holding a young boy by the wrist. His feet were almost off the ground as he tried to squirm free. There was an apple in his free hand which was then snatched away. Castiel was about to intervene when a boy his age burst through the crowd."Sam!" The freckled boy was about to strike at Metatron when another guard caught him by the waist. Castiel had had enough of this."Release them!" He flung his hood back stepping out from the crowd. Metatron recognized him instantly and bowed, forcing the young boy down with him. Everyone in the crowd and all the other guards followed suit. "Up; up please. Now release the boy." "He was caught stealing, Your Majesty." The guard holding the older boy struggled to speak as he got a new grip, completely immobilizing him."I will pay for the apple, and for the disturbance it's caused." He reached for his pouch and pulled several coins. Metatron waited for the vendor to nod before releasing his captive. "If you get caught again the price will be a finger." Metatron growled. After rubbing his wrist, the boy bolted to whom Castiel assumed was his brother. "Him as well." "My apologies Prince, he is wanted with a high price on his head.""I'll pay for the price and then some." Castiel felt rather protective of this stranger, even if it did seem crazy, he would help him."I'm not sure you understand. This boy is wanted by the Royal Guards for crimes against the Crown." "Then I pardon him." "My apologies again Your Highness, this situation is above your station." Metatron's tone was harsh and Castiel could tell this was personal. "Then I will escort him to the palace where I will speak to whom is above my station." Castiel gritted his teeth, he was not used to having someone say no to him. If this were about anything else, he doubted he would have cared, but if he was reading the situation correctly this boy's life was in his hands."Sam, go!" Dean turned his gaze to the younger boy and fought against the guard holding him. Castiel looked over just in time to see the long-haired boy take off.Several horses arrived and Dean's hands were tied in front of him tightly. He was then tied to a length of rope attached to a horse's saddle."That is unacceptable. I may not be able to pardon him, but you will take my requests seriously until we reach the palace, and I insist he ride." Metatron's scowl returned and he folded his hands in front of himself almost in a praying motion. "I'm sure if Your Majesty would take a second look at his plan, you'd see that a criminal cannot be trusted to have his own horse." Castiel walked over and began to untie the leash like rope."By that logic it does not make sense; you are correct. However, I never said he'd have his own horse. He will be riding with me." "With you, My Lord?" The guard holding the reins to Impala, Castiel's black stallion, asked. "Yes, with me." Castiel lead Dean by his wrists gently over and helped him up. Dean put up no resistance but kept his eyes on the ground. Castiel could see the anger blossoming on Metatron's face; he must have a personal connection to this, or he wouldn't be so aggressive. For as long as Castiel had known Metatron, he had been cruel; a truly nasty and spiteful individual, but this was a new level of malice. The likes the prince had not seen before. Castiel mounted Impala behind Dean and wrapped his arms around the man to hold the reins. Metatron ground his teeth but mounted his own horse as well, then started the group towards the palace. There were five horses in total. Castiel behind Metatron and the other guards blocking the prince in. "Thank you." Dean let his shoulders drop. He had been keeping a tough appearance, but it didn't seem to matter much anymore."For helping the younger boy?" Castiel leaned forward to whisper."Yes, he is my brother. I know I have no right to ask, but can you get a message to him? I need you to tell him not to do anything stupid like try to rescue me. We live in the old inn on the North edge of town." "I can do that." Castiel smiled despite Dean not being able to see. They had made half the journey and were on the dirt road that ran by the woods. Dean turned his attention to them, looking up for the first time since the market."Why did you do it?" Dean asked."Hmm?" "Help us?" He said. He felt the princes' arms stiffen around him, but didn't take back the question, which had been the first thought to go through his head after the words left his mouth. "Your brother is just a boy. I assume that you two don't eat very often. If I'm judging by your appearance. " Dean nodded. "No one should go hungry, especially children. I'd do it for anyone." "You don't sound like a prince." Dean scoffed as they reached the decorative iron gates. The guard who had escorted Impala dismounted his own gray stallion and went to take Impala's reins, causing Castiel to pull back. "I'm not leaving-" he stopped for the man to supply his name."Dean." "I'm not leaving Dean until I know what's going to happen to him, and I doubt they will be escorting him through the main door." The guard stepped back with a nod, and Metatron sneered but started the group back to the stables. "I'm going to do everything I can to help you and your brother. I promise."~<3~ "Even if I could pardon this boy, I would not do it on principle of your actions today. Balthazar, who was a highly regarded member of our staff, had to be let go due to your selfish actions. Until further notice, you will have a guard escort you at all times. I honestly expected better of you, Castiel." Naomi scolded her son from the table of her personal office. It was just a smaller version of the grand hall she had sectioned off for herself. When they had entered the palace Castiel still refused to part with Dean and literally dragged him around until they found his mother, who was the only person that was in fact 'above his station'. "To the dungeon for now. We don't have time for a trial until after the wedding." "So, he will get a trial then?" Castiel asked his mother who turned her attention back to her papers. "In front of the court judge, Gadreel; yes. Now leave me." She waved her hand in dismissal. Dean was grabbed by the shoulders with an extreme amount of unnecessary force by Metatron, who smiled as he did so. Metatron had Gadreel in his pocket, there was no way this was going to go in Dean's favor. Castiel sent a sympathetic smile towards Dean as he was pulled away. He was then ushered through another door.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

"You did the right thing." Charlie said placing her hand in Castiel's for a brief squeeze. Gabriel nodded in agreement. They were all taking a stroll around the palace wall with Castiel's new escort a few feet back. "Do you think you'll be able to get the message to his brother?" Castiel asked Gabriel. After he had explained what happened he had told them about his promise to Dean."Even if I can't do it myself, I will make sure it gets done. I'll even make sure he will get a sack of coins." "The way you talk about him, it almost sounds like you care. That is- I mean, more than a prince would for a subject." Charlie shifted her eyes to ensure the guard was keeping his distance. "I will admit he is handsome." "Oh, you have been holding out! I want details! Now!" Castiel lifted his hands in a shh-ing gesture. "I like her," Gabriel added with a chuckle. "Alright, alright, he is very handsome. He has freckles that could rival the stars, and his eyes-" he took a moment trying to find the right words. "-his eyes are the shade of the leaves from father's rose bushes. Remember how he could get them to grow? No one else can get them anywhere near as healthy as he could." Gabriel nodded as they reached the front gate. The sun was setting, and dinner would be served soon. "We should probably go inside and freshen up." Charlie said. "Unfortunately, we should." Castiel sighed. ~<3~ All of the time spent between the young couple to be and their parents was very serious. Not only in a 'walking on eggshells' way, but also in an 'our family is just as rich and proper as yours' way. Lucifer sat at the head of the table with Charlie on his right and Naomi to his left. Leaving the Princes' at the end; Castiel next to Charlie and Gabriel to his mother's right. The table was ridiculously large for such a small group. Normally it was for balls or other large parties; easily holding thirty people. "How was your stroll?" Lucifer gently blew on his spoon of chowder. "I enjoyed it," Charlie nodded. She hated these formal dinners. She was expected to be a perfect princess in every way. Her posture had to be perfect. This meant no elbows on the table, which is just plain uncomfortable. Her manners were to be on point; no loud chewing or noise of any kind. However, the worst part by far in her opinion was that she couldn't speak unless spoken to. This rule was only in place for formal dinners, but it was demeaning nonetheless. Castiel's attempts to clear his mind of Dean had failed completely. He wondered if he would be eating dinner tonight. Sometimes the guards would 'forget' to feed the prisoners."Castiel!" His mother's sharp tone pulled him back into reality."My mind must have wondered, I apologize. What were you saying?" He spoke to no one in particular. "I was asking what is so enjoyable about walking in circles; though now I'm more curious as to where your mind went off to." Lucifer pushed his empty bowl away. It was quickly replaced with a plate of roasted chicken and potatoes."It wouldn't have anything to do with your trip to the market today, would it?" Lucifer asked as he began to cut into his food."No, I'm afraid I'm just tired." He smiled."I'm aware you did have a tiring day." There was a sly tone to his voice. "This food is lovely." Charlie tried to change the topic, despite the possible repercussions to her. Her father's head whipped round and he scowled at her, but only for a brief second after deciding it was more important for him to continue to embarrass Castiel. "Yes I-" Gabriel began to speak over his younger brother. "You know Lucifer, you haven't spoken a word to me since you've arrived. I feel left out." Charlie bit her tongue to keep from snorting at the look on her father's face. Not only had Gabriel not used a title but he claimed the King had insulted him. "It was my understanding that we were here for my daughter to wed your brother. I apologize if my attention to you, the Prince who abdicated the throne, was insufficient or insulting." Lucifer leaned forward and narrowed his eyes."Apology accepted. I can understand how trying to appear domineering and impressive must take up a lot of your energy." Charlie bit her lip. No one had ever spoken to her father that way. "Gabriel-" Naomi snapped, but Lucifer raised a hand to silence her. "It does indeed require much energy and focus to run a Kingdom. Though, I suppose you wouldn't know anything about that."“I’m well aware of the requirements needed to run a Kingdom actually. Which is why I chose not to do so. You see Castiel is much more qualified than I to rule this Kingdom. I concede, it is hard to admit to one's shortcomings, though it can be rather freeing and rather good for the soul. You should try it. I understand your wife left a few years back."Naomi stood up swiftly and turned to her eldest son. "That will be enough of that Gabriel. Since you appear to have no interest in eating, I suggest you leave dinner for those of us who do." With a firm nod to Lucifer and a hidden wink to his brother, Gabriel made a dramatic exit out of the dining hall. The rest of the meal was eaten in silence.  ~<3~ Charlie said goodnight to Castiel and then he was escorted to his room by a guard named Zachariah. He is one of the oldest guards around the palace, and he wasn't the talkative type. "I'll be right outside this door." The guard said. With a quick nod he slipped into his room and closed the door. He gripped his fingers in his messy black hair and pulled at it lightly. His life was plummeting out of control and he had no way to catch himself."Hey, I know it's bad kiddo." Castiel threw his head up at the sound of his brother’s voice from across the room. "Gabriel, how did you get in here?" He released his hair and tilted his head slightly. "Cassie, it's time I show you something." Castiel cocked an eyebrow and crossed his arms. This seemed like the beginning of a bad prank. Gabriel was a notorious trickster around the palace, but he wasn't mean. He wouldn't try to prank him at a time like this. Gabriel waved his brother over to the large wardrobe against his left bedroom wall. With an eye roll he followed and watched as Gabriel lifted the rug that was pinned by the wardrobe. There was just enough room that when the rug was pulled back, he could see part of a trap door. "I came here after dinner, but I'll be leaving through here." He smiled slyly at his younger brother. "Where does that go?" Castiel asked as he helped to push the heavy piece of furniture. "To the old slave halls. Way back when, it was distasteful for slaves to be seen walking around the grand halls we use. So, they built these small walkways for them to get around without the royals having to see them. Now that we mostly use servants and provide clean clothes and regular baths, they don't use them anymore. I think I'm the only one to use them in over fifty years." Gabriel lifted the thick, wool rug and pulled it to the side. "So, this is how you pull your pranks? You use these walkways?" Castiel looked down at the smooth door on the floor of his room. How could he not know it was here all these years? "Yep. I found them when I was wandering around the old East wing." "You mean the one where no one is supposed to go because it's practically falling apart?" "Hey, I get bored sometimes." Gabriel reached down and pulled at the hand hold. It took a bit of force, but it popped free with a puff of dust. "I'll get a lantern." Castiel started to grab one from his night stand, but his brother stopped him holding up a box of matches. "You underestimate me," he chuckled. "Come on." ~<3~ Gabriel took Castiel through several sets of walkways, lighting lanterns he'd lined through them over the years. The walkways were just big enough for two people to walk side by side, though slightly bent forward because of the low ceilings. The dust made the air thick and it stirred as they walked.Gabriel showed him the markings he'd made in the walls so he didn't get lost, and eventually they arrived at a collection of rooms that formed a type of hub; the slave quarters. "People used to live down here?" Castiel swept the rooms with his gaze. Most of them had straw beds with blankets or even rugs thrown over them. He followed his brother to the very last room and smiled when he opened the door. There was a massive pile of blankets; at least two feet thick. On the left wall was a small table with some dried meat and a few cheese rolls. Castiel went to sit at the table and Gabriel took a handful of dried beef."This isn't our final stop. We're just picking up some food." Gabriel nudged his brother playfully. "Where to next, then?" "The dungeon."

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Dean had resumed his struggling as soon as he was taken away. Metatron dug his fingers into Dean's arms as he hauled him off to lower levels of the palace. On the last set of stone stairs, he decided it wasn't worth the struggle and gave Dean a powerful shove. He tumbled head over heels down and landed at the feet of another guard. "Slipped right out of my grip, Uriel." Metatron smiled down at Dean as he spoke to the guard. "I saw." Uriel hauled the young man up by the elbow to inspect the gash on his forehead. Blood ran down his face and into his left eye. Dean went to wipe it with his free hand but was struck with a sharp pain when he went to move it. "He dislocated his shoulder," Uriel hmphed with a grin."I'll give him a hand with that." Metatron took a firm grip on Dean's left arm and forcefully popped it back into place. Dean's screaming rang out and echoed off the walls of the guard’s room, as both men snickered. The dungeon was large, especially for a Kingdom of their size. There was the main guards’ room, where whoever was on duty stayed and through a heavy wooden door there were several hallways lined with cells."I'll leave him with you then," Metatron said before starting back up the stairs. Uriel opened the door behind him and continued to drag Dean, who was limp in his grip. He opened the last cell in the line with an iron key he kept on his belt, before throwing Dean to his knees inside. The floor was a cobblestone pattern, and though there was some straw on the ground it was damp and starting to smell. Uriel slammed the iron bared door shut and left without another word. Dean caught himself on his good arm as he fell forward, but he didn't have time to steady himself before his elbow buckled. Leaving him face down on his forearm andknees desperately trying to catch his breath.Despite his better judgment he ended up laying down on his side. Even with his blurry vision he knew he was alone here. His head was swimming and exhaustion started to hit, until the heavy cloud of sleep overtook him. Dean startled awake and tried to get to his feet, when a heavy ache started through him. Then it all came rushing back as the pain hit; the prince, the dungeon, the stairs. He took his time sitting up and looked himself over, finding large patches of bruising. It mostly covered his chest, but if he had to bet he would guess it was covering his back, too. Dean pulled himself to the corner of his cell where there was a slightly thicker layer of hay and propped himself against the wall. His mind had been wondering about Sam when a noise startled him back to reality. He turned to the main door, but once he saw it wasn't moving, he began to search for the source of the sound. It must have come from the next hall over, but he was too dizzy to get up and try to look. When the shadow of a man came into view his body went ridged. It could be that guard again, coming to knock him around a second time. The thought terrified him, as he still had not recovered from the first. The relief that poured over him when he saw the man step from the shadows was better than the first rain of spring; Prince Castiel.  ~<3~ The prince stared at the hunched figure of the boy he saw in the market. Where he once stood tall with a face of bravery and nonchalance, now lay a shivering boy covered in dried blood."Oh, what did they do to you?" He whispered to the air, trying to calm himself.Castiel rushed as quietly as he could and stopped at the door giving it a good shake; it didn't budge. He felt like screaming. Were all prisoners treated like this? Dean began to crawl across the floor with his weight on his good arm. Pain shot through his legs at the movement, but he had to get the bars. Castiel knelt down and rested his hand on a bar as he watched the boy’s face switch from determination to pain and back again.Dean propped himself up against the wall; finally by the bars, and trying carefully to avoid bumping his shoulder. It was swollen and throbbing."I'm so sorry," Castiel whispered."It's not your fault." Dean chuckled, only for it to end in a coughing fit; his ribs on fire. "It is though. I didn't know it was this bad. I should have fought harder." Castiel cleared his throat to hide the tremble in his voice. "You literally wouldn't let go of me until you spoke to the Queen." Dean winced in pain as he readjusted himself against the wall. The stone was cold against his shoulder, and it helped chase away some of the pain."Still, I didn't know they did this. How could I not have known about this, what they do to people. What they've done to you.” Tears began to gather in the corners of his eyes, and Dean could hear the desperation in his voice. "Hey, I'm still alive. I've been through worse." He reached up and placed his hand over Castiel's on the iron bar. The prince brought his gaze to their hands. This is new. Not the concern for his people, but his concern for Dean."Your Highness?" Castiel looked up having been lost in thought. "Don't do that." His voice was gentle but firm, and he met Dean's gaze. "That's not me. I'm Castiel." "Okay, Cas.""Cas? I like that." He chuckled and pulled his hand back to wipe a tear. "Why are you even crying? I'm not anyone worth crying over." "And why do you say that?" Castiel lifted his hand to put it back on Dean's, which still rested on the bar, but he changed his mind at the last second. He slowly manoeuvred his arm through the bars to run the back of his knuckles lightly across Dean's face. Castiel sucked in his bottom lip as he brushed a bit of crusted blood off. How did this, beautiful, strong person not think he was deserving?"I'm a nobody; a homeless thief." Dean pulled back. A prince shouldn't be touching someone like him. He wondered if this was even real. It could all be a dream. Or maybe he'd died and this was heaven. Would this be heaven though, having a kind prince talking to him; touching him softly and telling him he's important? It could be heaven. "I brought you something." Castiel held out his hand through the bars and Dean looked down at the dried meat. It had been years since he had meat. It was one of the hardest things to steal. "If they did this, I doubt they fed you." The prince forced a smile. Dean reached out, and took the food, his fingers sliding down Castiel's palm. Dean's skin was rough, far more worn then he had felt before. He thought about kissing those fingers. Giving each tip a peck to show how important each was. To show that Dean was important. "I'm going to get you out of here," Castiel whispered as he watched Dean's face light up at the taste of his food. Dean met his gaze but didn't speak. "I'm going to get you out, and I'm going to make sure that you and your brother want for nothing." "What reason could you possibly have-" Castiel cut him off. "Because I care for you, deeply." "You care for me?" The confusion and shock of his words almost had Castiel in tears again. "I care for you in a way I haven't for anyone else, and if you do not feel the same you still have my promise that you and your family will be taken care of." Dean reached out and Castiel met his hand between the bars; both their hearts racing. Dean jumped when another figure appeared from the direction the prince had come. He had to bite his tongue as pain shot through his body. Castiel whipped his head around to see Gabriel. "We need to go." Castiel turned and saw Dean was holding his breath."It's okay, you can trust Gabriel." Castiel pressed himself as close as he could to the bars but shook his head when Dean tried to do the same."You are in too much pain -""Castiel." Gabriel's voice wasn't frantic but there was some urgency behind it. "I'll be back for you. I promise." Castiel ran his palm tenderly down Dean's face and Dean leaned into the touch. Then all to soon the heat of his hand was gone and both of the princes had disappeared around the bend.~<3~ "You should have seen him Charlie, sitting on damp straw shivering. He was bloody and bruised. I had no idea prisoners were treated this way." Castiel picked up his pace as they strolled through the gardens. It was the only time they could really talk without being overheard. This was their second stroll of the day, right after lunch. "I'm so sorry. It sounds awful." Charlie turned to look at their escort, Zachariah, who remained ten steps behind. It was the farthest away they could get him to follow. "I've never felt this strongly about anyone before. It's not just that he was being mistreated; it's the fact that it's him." Charlie laced her arm around his and pulled him close enough to whisper in his ear. "You love him, don't you?" She asked. "I think I do." Behind them Zachariah cleared his throat. He was only a few steps away. "I should not have to remind Your Highness' that though you are betrothed, that is quite a forward, and rather inappropriate posture." "Of course." Castiel pulled back as Charlie nodded to the guard, who only stepped back a few feet. They resumed their stroll in silence and after a moment Charlie stopped, fanning at her face. "Are you alright?" Castiel asked gently leading her to a nearby bench. "Just a bit of dizziness." Her breath quickened as she continued to fan herself. Their escort ran leaned in over her with concern on his face."Your Majesty?" "I'm fine, I-" She took a deep breath, which didn't seem to help. "Perhaps you should lie down," The guard said as he went to help her up. "Do not touch me!" She cried yanking her arm away. "Charlie, you're concerning me. Please let me help you inside." Castiel slowly reached for her to help her up, but as soon as she was on her feet she swayed forward and immediately sat back down. Charlie started to gasp for breath and her hand flew to her throat."Go fetch a doctor!" Castiel looked frantic and didn't even glance at the guard as he spoke. The guard was sprinting before he had even finished speaking. Castiel turned to look back at her and was completely baffled to find her grinning and breathing normally. "Charlie-" He began, confused. But before he could get another word out, Charlie interrupted him."We don't have much time before he comes back. I have an idea that might just be crazy enough to work." "You had me worried sick!" "Castiel, you love Dean and I love my Rowena back home. If we both refuse to marry, they can't force us. A priest will only wed a consenting couple." Castiel just stared as the thought sank in. "It can't be that simple, can it?" He asked baffled. "I thought the same thing, and if can just stay firm I think it's worth a try." Charlie looked with warmth at the hope now filling Castiel's eyes. "Alright then; we tell them at dinner."

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

When the guard returned with the doctor and several other guards, Charlie was miraculously better. The doctor still insisted she be carried inside and thoroughly examined though; which while extremely unpleasant was well worth the privacy. After her exam the doctor diagnosed her with heat stroke, and she was instructed to drink several cups of water and stay off her feet. Castiel took the opportunity to show her the library where he spent the next few hours reading to her. Of course, Charlie knew how to read, but it's very unbecoming for a lady to read unnecessarily. They were only three chapters into their adventure when they were they summoned for dinner. The Royal families sat at the large table in the Grand Hall as several serving plates were placed in the middle. Dinner was much grander tonight. Castiel suspected that King Lucifer had said something about the previous one. They watched as bowls of mashed potatoes, vegetables, fruits, and several types of sliced breads were piled in front of them. They couldn't possibly eat even half of this. Maybe the left overs would go the staff, but knowing his mother they probably wouldn't. How had he not noticed how wasteful they were? The King was the first to reach out, and he pulled a whole chicken over which he placed in front of him. Castiel took several slices of bread and hid half of them in his pockets. He continued to fill his plate and glanced over to Charlie. They hadn't actually put much detail into the plan, but Castiel decided that he would speak up after his pockets were full. "If I may." He held his chalice out and gave it a tap with his knife. All eyes turned to him. Charlie was clearly nervous, so he gave her a warm smile, hoping it would help."I'd like to make an announcement." He took a deep breath, turning to look at everyone's expressions; fear, confusion, surprise. He felt like he was stalling himself. What had he started? He was directly defying his mother. This was an act of treason; but it's too late to go back even if he had wanted too. This would work. It has to. "The Princess and I have come to an agreement. We are in agreement that this wedding is a mistake, and thus we are cancelling our engagement." He held his breath and watched as his mother's jaw literally dropped. The Kings eyes went wide with explosive rage as he turned to his daughter. He opened his mouth to begin what was surely to be a loud and nasty discussion, when Charlie stood up. "Before you start, I am in complete agreement with Prince Castiel. We will have to find another way to unite our countries. Another treaty perhaps?" "Did you know about this?" The Queen snarled at Gabriel, who looked half way between laughing and passing out. "No, actually." The Queen only believed him because of his lack of comeback. It had truly shocked him. The King stood up."This is unacceptable! Outrageous! You disgraceful, ungrateful, blasphemous, undignified- the audacity! Why I ought- " The King was cut off in the middle of his rant by the oldest Prince, having regained his composure."Careful, Your Highness; we would not want you to exhaust yourself using so many large words. Perhaps we can all sit back down and discuss this like the civilized people that we are?" The King slammed his fists on the table sending his chicken flying to the floor. The vein on his neck throbbed with his pulse. His gaze daggers as it landed on the Queen, who cleared her throat before speaking. "Guards, escort these three to their rooms." Her voice was firm, but only from a stranger's perspective. Castiel could hear the change of her pitch. It had worked.  ~<3~ Gabriel accompanied by his personal guard, Michael, walked slowly down the hall. Michael was in the lower ranks working his way up. Someone of his age, twenty, who had been recruited at the proper age would be several ranks above him. He was only a year younger then Gabriel. The Prince had hand picked him himself and offered him a spot in the Royal Guard only a few years back. "You really didn't know anything about that?" Michael asked; he knew he could speak freely with the Prince.Gabriel shook his head. They walked in a comfortable silence until they reached Gabriel's chambers. Michael bowed his head as the Prince wished him a good night. He shut the door behind him and quickly locked it. He ran to his entrance of the hidden hallways behind his bed; he needed to talk to his brother. He was sprinting at full speed to Castiel's room but stopped upon hearing Dean's name. There was an entrance from the main hall a few feet behind him; Gabriel quietly turned back and held his ear to it. "Are you sure?" It sounded like Metatron. "Yes sir. I heard it with my own ears. The Prince admitted to being in love with the boy in the dungeon; Dean." That voice belonged to Zachariah, without doubt. "I'll go inform the Queen. You just make sure Prince Castiel stays in his room until I come fetch him tomorrow." Metatron spoke again. "Have you gotten any closer to locating the boy's younger brother?" That bastard. It wasn't enough to just have Dean, they were going after Sam too. "We are getting closer."Gabriel turned not needing to hear the rest. He had to get to Sam before anyone else could. ~<3~ Castiel was locked in his room; the door having been slammed in his face. He had honestly expected things to have gone much worse and being thrown in his room meant he could pay a visit to Dean earlier than expected. He moved the rug he had placed over the trap door and tossed it to the side. There was no reason to move the dresser back, but the rug definitely had to be kept covering it. He got lost once on his way, but thankfully the maps and notes Gabriel had drawn on the walls over the years quickly found Castiel back on track. He wondered how long it had taken his brother to map all this. How many times had he gotten lost himself? Were there more unexplored areas? He hoped to get the chance to answer his questions after all the dust settled around this situation.  ~<3~ Dean only knew it was morning because Uriel came to check on him. In his hand was a wooden cup. Dean prayed it was for him. "Hope you slept well." Uriel chuckled. Dean lifted his head in acknowledgment. If they wanted to torment him, he'd go along. "Thirsty?" The guard held up the cup. Dean licked his lips absentmindedly and tried to get up. It took him a couple of attempts, but he was able to stumble over to the bars. Using his good shoulder, he leaned on the bars, supporting himself with his grip. Uriel held the cup up for him and without hesitation he drank. The second the liquid touched his tongue he knew it wasn't water. The stench had him gagging as the urine poured into his mouth. He spewed it out, hitting Uriel in the face.Uriel half punched, half pushed Dean through the bars before throwing the rest of the piss on him. "Now I have to change, you ungrateful little shit. You should be glad you get to drink anything at all." Dean tried to calm his rapid breathing from where the fall had knocked the wind out of him. Uriel turned and stormed out, leaving Dean soaked in piss and shivering. When Uriel came back next it had been hours. Too long for lunch, but Dean could smell something amazing; probably the guard’s dinner. Uriel dragged a stool over and plopped down in front of Dean’s cell. He had a plate piled with ham and bread, of which the sight alone made Dean's mouth water. The smell was its own form of torture, and Dean knew he was going to have to watch him eat it. It shouldn't be that hard to just sit there and watch someone do something, but his stomach growled angrily. Only for a second did he think about begging for some. "Smells good, hmm?" Uriel fanned the air over the plate towards him; bastard. Dean decided to play the game and nodded. He was weak and starving. His pride be damned."If you ask really nicely, I suppose you could persuade me to share."If he wanted him to beg, so be it. "May I please have some food." Dean kept his voice soft, lacing a pitiful tone into it. Uriel scoffed at him."You're not even trying." Uriel spoke as he chewed his first bite of bread."Please, Sir. I'm starving. I haven't eaten in days. Please, would you spare just a crumb?" He pulled himself to his knees and leaned against the bars."That's more like it." He picked up a small slice of bread and held it out. It was covered in mold, obviously brought specifically for Dean. It wasn't enough of a deterrent though. Dean held his hand out through the bars. Uriel leaned forward but dropped it directly next to his hand. "Clumsy me. I'll get it." Uriel reached out palm down and squished the bread into the piss and dirt. After a good smear across the floor he held it up for Dean to take. Dean retracted his hand. "Oh no, you begged so nicely for this and now you are going to eat it." Uriel stood up, removing the cell key. "Okay! Okay." He'd rather eat it than get beaten again. Uriel watched with a cheeky grin as Dean chewed the abomination. There was a slight crunch from what must have been gravel dragged in on boots, and Dean couldn't take it anymore. He gagged and began to vomit, but because of his empty stomach only a mouthful of stomach acid came up, and he was left dry heaving on the ground. "If I weren't so hungry I'd make you eat it again, but I have just enough appetite left to finish my meal." Uriel smiled taking his plate. He slammed the door behind him leaving Dean whimpering on the floor.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Castiel gently opened the passageway into the dungeon and listened for guards. The only sound he heard were soft sobs and his heart shattered; he knew Dean's voice by the sobs alone. As quickly as he could while being quiet, he made his way to Dean's cell. He was curled up in a ball, lying next to a small pile of vomit. The whole area smelled of stale piss. "Oh God," he whispered, causing Dean to whip around. He clearly hurt himself with the quick movement but kept a smile as he sat up. Castiel fell to his knees at the bars as Dean crawled over. "I will personally execute the guard that did this to you." The Prince was still whispering as he reached in to wipe a speck of dried vomit from Dean's face. Dean caught him gently by the wrists."I'm okay, Cas. Promise.""No, you're not." Castiel stood up and Dean followed the warmth of his hands until they left the cell. He watched as the Prince began to collect things throughout the dungeon. The first thing he did was collect a bucket and a rag from a nearby shelf. He took it around a corner and Dean could hear the soft squeak of a water pump. Careful so as not to spill, Castiel came back over and dipped the rag."Give me your shirt?" It wasn't an order by any means. He moved closer to the bars and reaching through he helped the other boy shimmy out of it, careful to avoid his bad shoulder. "You shouldn't wash your face, but maybe you can get some of the piss off you. I'll be back." He handed Dean the rag before disappearing around the corner again. Dean looked down at his chest; there were more bruises than normal skin. He ran the rag over his chest as lightly as he could, but it still stung and left the ache more noticeable than before. When the Prince returned, he was shirtless. In his hands he had a ball of fabric; his dry shirt being used to dry Dean's. "I've washed it, but I can't seem to get it any drier." Castiel traded his shirt for the soiled rag. "You're not a Prince." Dean smiled as he let Castiel help him put his shirt back on through the bars. "Oh really, what am I then?" He smiled, meeting his eyes. "An angel." Castiel froze. Had no one really ever helped him like this? To do simple things like wash and dress?"Do you think you can push some of the wet hay out? I can take it and trade it for some dry as long as we do it evenly." "You've already washed my piss-soaked shirt. I'm not asking you to haul urine-soaked hay." Dean lowered himself back to a sitting position."I know you're not asking, I'm offering. The ground is wet, but if we get you some new hay maybe we can keep you dry." Castiel smiled. "I'm not worth the trouble you're going to get into.""You're worth more to me than you know. However, I think I hit the maximum amount of trouble earlier. This would just be icing. Try using your legs." Dean stopped readjusting to look up at him. Did Castiel really mean that? He was afraid to ask. After a bit more rearranging Dean was able to push the wet hay through the bars, careful to avoid disturbing the vomit. "What did you do earlier?" "I announced my un-engagement." Dean had to cover his mouth to stop his laughter."You what?" He began to spread the fresh hay being handed to him."My ex-bride-to-be and I announced that we refuse to get married. Hold on just a moment." The Prince disappeared around the corner and soon returned with a cup of water. Dean sent an apologetic look up as he gulped it down, realizing he had snatched the cup. He was just so thirsty, but Castiel didn't look upset. A sweet but sad smile rested on his lips. The Prince had made three trips before Dean stopped drinking, but he made one more to keep the cup filled. "Let's get you propped up against the wall. I have something for you." "I don't like surprises, but I have a feeling that you'd never give me anything I wouldn't like." Dean, using the last of his strength, dragged himself over to the wall. Castiel curled his lips in and watched Dean with a look of awe. How could someone so abused and kicked by life still smile and trust so freely?Once he was sure that Dean was resting comfortably, he pulled the food from his pocket; three slices of bread, a handful of grapes and a chunk of cheese. Dean's eyes lit up. "I've never had grapes before," he whispered. Castiel watched as Dean lifted one to his lips and laughed gently at the face he made as it popped in his mouth. He watched the different expressions that came with every bite; each more special then the last.He was going to spoil this boy. He was going to feed him every food he could find. He was going to give him the world because, Castiel realized, Dean was becoming his world. There was a shuffling noise by the main door and both of them froze."Go!" Dean hissed in a whisper. Castiel looked at the door and back, there was another noise; damn."I'm going to come back and when all of this settles, I will get you out of here." He hated how rushed his words came out, but he tried to put as much emotion into them as possible. After a gentle stroke of his hand on Dean's cheek he stood and ran back to the passageway.  ~<3~ Gabriel dismounted his colt, Carmel, at the edge of the overgrown road. He slid off his cloak and folded it across the saddle. There wouldn't be anyone out here to recognize him, and if he didn't want Sam to run on sight, he shouldn't keep his face hidden. He used the reins to tie Carmel to a branch of a larger bush. Sam would hear a horse much sooner than he would the Prince, and though he could catch him on horseback, that would not be the best first impression. The best thing to do would be to get just close enough before announcing himself. With a quick but gentle pat on the neck to Carmel, Gabriel started off. When Gabriel was a little boy there had been a detrimental tornado in this area. Most of the villages tried to rebuild, but eventually ended up moving closer to the palace. The Inn his brother had mentioned was a few buildings away, and though Gabriel hadn't been here in years he knew the way. One of the advantages of abdicating the throne was the lack of responsibility and thus free time to spend wherever he liked. He kept to the path and watched his step to avoid making too much noise. It took only minutes before he arrived at the door. Gabriel was about to knock when he felt something sharp against his back."What do you want?" The voice was clearly from a younger male; Gabriel decided to go with it."Sam?" He kept his voice low and gentle. "Why are you here?" Gabriel was going to need a different approach."I know you don't know me, but I need you to hear me out." "Give me one reason why I shouldn't just run you through and dump your body in a well?" Shit. This kid meant business."Dean. Your brother. Dean, sent me." Not entirely true; Dean asked Castiel who sent him, but not the point. He was turning the conversation around."How do I know you're telling the truth?" Shit. This had not been this difficult in his head. He didn't know anything about Dean. At all. "I'm waiting." Gabriel felt the weapon dig into his back harder. "My necklace. Pull my necklace from under my tunic." Sam thought it over before using his empty hand to grab the chain. He gave it a swift pull and it snapped free. His eyes when wide when he saw the pendant."This is the Royal Seal." His voice was barely above of whisper. "You're the Crown Prince Gabriel." The Prince chuckled nervously."Nice to meet ya, kiddo." Sam was frozen and after a moment Gabriel spoke again."Mind if I turn around? We need to be quick about this." He felt the weapon leave, and saw it was actually a sharpened stick when he spun around. "Is Dean alive?" Sam's voice quivered, and Gabriel's heart shattered. This poor kid; out here alone, not knowing if his only family is dead or alive. "He is, but we need to hurry. The guards are looking for you, and once we springDean he'll want to see his little bro.""You? You are going to break my brother out?" "Me, you, and maybe a few friends." Gabriel smiled, he could see hope growing in the kid's smile. He held out his hand. "Let's go storm the castle."   ~<3~  The sound of splintering wood sent Castiel flying up and out of his bed. He had locked his door last night, but he hadn't even heard a knock. The door was cracked down the middle, he wasn't even sure he could open it now if he tried. He turned and looked at the rug but pushed the thought of escape aside. There was another crash at his door. He might need the escape route later, and whatever was going on, he had to face it now. With one last blast the door broke and Castiel could see four guards holding a battering ram."Have you gone mad!?" "Seize him." Metatron stepped slowly into view with his hands folded behind his back. Two guards took Castiel by the arms and he fought his instinct to struggle against them."What is this Metatron?" The Guard Captain just smiled and started walking away. The guards holding him started to follow and the Prince stumbled forward, tripping on his own feet."Tell me to walk, damn it!" He turned to his left to look at the guard. He recognized him; Samandriel. Castiel could tell right away he wanted to apologize. Samandriel wasn't the cruel type. Castiel knew his wife. They were expecting a little one. If he was acting like this he must have been told to do so. The doors to the Throne Room were thrown open. The first thing Castiel saw was Charlie, still in her nightgown and fighting against her own captors. Castiel knew the guard on her right arm; Kevin. He looked like he had been crying. Kevin was the peaceful type, shy too, but he did what was asked of him. Blind loyalty. And they used his loyalty to what? Rip a sleeping girl from her bed after breaking down her door? Castiel prayed they were gentler with her.The Prince turned to the thrones when he heard Lucifer clear his throat. "Thank you for joining us," he said calmly while folding his hands in his lap. He sat on the King's throne. His father's throne. Naomi stood just behind him, eyes locked on her son. "Fuck. You. You piece of horse shit!" Charlie spat in his direction after speaking. Lucifer sighed deeply. "Well, let us not draw this out. Bring him in!" Castiel's eyes went wide when he saw Dean being dragged in on his knees. A small trail of blood followed behind him, running from his right leg.He had a few fresh bruises and cuts, but he was looking around. Responsive. Alive."I believe you said that you and my daughter had come to an 'agreement'." Lucifer addressed Castiel. He paused, expecting an answer or acknowledgement. He ground his teeth when Castiel held his stone face. The King snapped his fingers and one of the guards kicked Dean in the stomach. "No! Stop!" Charlie began to fight harder and elbowed Kevin in the ribs. He lost his grip and Charlie pulled away from the other guard. He caught her by her sleeve, but she kept going. The fabric tore and most of her chest was left exposed. She pulled the lower fabric up as she ran and threw herself in front of Dean, using one hand to hug him protectively and the other to keep her chest covered with the lower fabric of her nightgown. "I'm suggesting a new 'agreement'. You and my daughter marry, and this boy lives through the night." Castiel looked back to Dean, Charlie had tucked his head in, trying to cover and protect as much of him as possible. Charlie met the Princes' eyes, they both knew his life was more important. Castiel opened his mouth to speak when Charlie spoke up."We marry, and Dean gets released." She had turned to address her father without giving up any of her protective posture. "This is not a negotiation, I-" Naomi placed her hand on Lucifer's shoulder. He whipped back, a scowl on his face."He lives to his trial. Then it is up to the judge." Lucifer turned to Charlie and she hugged Dean closer. "If I know anything about Castiel, it's that he will fix this." She nuzzled close as she whispered. "Done." Castiel called out, all attention returning to him. "Very good. Take the prisoner back to his cell." Charlie let go, not wanting to cause Dean more pain by trying to pull him back to her. Castiel locked eyes with Dean as he was taken away, there was trust shining in them. Trust that Castiel would not break.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Gabriel shifted slightly, adjusting in the saddle. Sam riding behind him, but under his cloak. "You okay back there, kiddo?" The Prince asked, bringing Carmel to a full trot. Sam hugged Gabriel tightly and took a deep breath."Yeah, I've just never ridden a horse before." Gabriel sat straighter, trying to help Sam with his grip. "Then you're lucky Carmel is your first. He rides smooth and sweet." It only then hit Gabriel that Sam had probably never had caramel. He lived in an abandoned building and had probably never had a sweet in his life. Gabriel would have to fix that.Gabriel had made sure that Michael was the guard at the side gate, and he slipped in unnoticed by anyone else. He helped Sam dismount in the stables and put Carmel in his pen, He left his saddle and bridle on knowing he would be back soon."I need you to move fast and exactly when I do. Got it?" Gabriel took Sam by the wrist, when he nodded. They only had to sneak past one guard on their way in and to the servants’ halls. Gabriel gently closed the door and took a few deep breaths. "Why are you doing this?" Sam asked as he took in their surroundings. The question caught Gabriel off guard."Depends on what you mean by this. You want the full story?" The Prince waved for Sam to follow him. "Yes." "Well my brother, Castiel was recently engaged to the Princess of Purgatory, to unite the Kingdoms." Gabriel explained as he led them through the maze. "Wait, I thought you were the older Prince. Why aren't you the one who is engaged." "That is a different story." He sighed as they continued their walk."Well, then tell me that story. Why isn't it you?" "Because I'm not good for the Kingdom, okay?" He spun around, and keeping his voice low added a harsh tone to it."You went out of your way to come protect me, and you want to break my brother out of here. You seem like a good guy." Gabriel turned back around, slightly slouched and started to lead again."You want a list or something? For one, I'm not serious enough. I run away from responsibility, I get overwhelmed, freak out, and then dismiss it without actually fixing anything. I also make bad decisions; really bad, fucked up decisions. I don't think things through, except giving up the throne. That is the only thing in my life I have probably thought through. I'm not cut out to be King, but Cassie," He paused as he led Sam into a small room."Cassie is going to be great. We just have a few things to fix first. You stay here, and I'll be back as soon as I can." Gabriel waited until Sam gave him a nod before taking off.  ~<3~ The guards returned to Charlie's sides and one guard took her by the right arm and began to drag her from the room. She struggled just as hard as before, and it seemed Kevin was more concerned for her modesty than she was. He kept a constant hold on the fabric of her gown to keep it up instead of dragging along at the other guard’s pace. For which Castiel was grateful. "Give me a moment with him," Lucifer spoke gently. Castiel knew it was supposed to be intimidating, but he refused to be intimidated by this monster.Naomi nodded and waved for the guards to follow. Castiel stood and rolled his shoulders back, chest out. He placed his hands at his sides and resisted the temptation to charge forward and do something he would surely regret. "Now that we are alone-" "You are a coward. You use fear and manipulation to rule, and that is the reason you will never be a great king." Castiel interrupted him calmly. "I seem to be doing an outstanding job thus far. By tonight half of your fields yields from now forward will belong to Purgatory. Ten percent of your taxes as well." "And how is that?" "Tell me Prince Castiel do you enjoy loopholes? I do. I rather enjoy them. I think all leaders in fact should be properly versed in them. Take this one for example: Under normal circumstances if a Princess were to marry a Prince it would combine their Kingdoms. However, my daughter is not just a Princess; she is a woman. And I, being her father, I'm selling her hand as a woman, as any father has a right to do.The price has been arranged, the date has been set for tonight. I win, and you know what is the best part is? I am still King." Castiel stood eyes locked on him. That is what this was about; power. "I was so excited when Amara got pregnant. I was ready to have a son, but then when Charlie popped out, I can admit I was more than a bit disappointed, but we would get it right next time." Lucifer began to pace but kept eye contact for the most part. "But then Charlie's hair started to grow. No one in my family has ever had red hair. Still, Amara swore Charlie was mine. Rumors flew around the castle of Amara and her red-headed lover. I knew I could not trust her anymore, and if we did have another child and she admitted it was not mine things would be beyond complicated. So, I locked her away." "You kept her against her will? But she left you a few years ago, the news was all over the kingdom." "Yes, that was rather hard to fake. I almost feel bad. Charlie still thinks her mother will come back for her." Castiel lost all composure, only stopping himself as he entered Lucifer's personal space."There is a special place in Hell for you." "Maybe so, but for now I have a special place of my own on Earth; my throne." He chuckled and clapped his hands loudly. The doors were opened and Castiel let the guards drag him away. ~<3~ Castiel did not fight the guards who led him to an unused bedroom in the South Wing of the palace. If he could just get to the slave halls, maybe he could get to Dean and they could escape or, or- something! Anything!Samandriel closed and locked the door after entering the room with the Prince. The other guards having left once they reached the room. "Your Highness-" Samandriel's voice was almost too soft to be heard. Castiel raised his hand in his direction, stopping him. The adrenaline of the situation was starting to wear off. He needed a minute. "They cannot do this. They cannot do this. They-" Castiel raked his fingers through his bedhead hair. Think. Think. He began to pace. If he had just left well enough alone. It was his fault. What was happening to Dean was his fault. "Your Highness?" "What?" Castiel growled as he whipped around to face him."May I get you anything to make you more comfortable? We will be here until the wedding tonight." This was the Prince's chance."Yes, books. As many as you can carry. Historical, law, and anything similar. Go!" Samandriel nodded and took the key from his pocket. He reached for the door but turned his head at the last second. The Prince had not moved, though he did notice the shake of the guard's hand as he turned the lock. Was he afraid that he would attack him? Samandriel was the smallest guard in the whole garrison. Why would they have him of all the guards to- they wanted Castiel to try to escape. They wanted him to attack Samandriel to make him look like the bad guy. The door closed behind Samandriel and Castiel heard the lock click into place. As soon as it did, he ran frantically around the room. There was more than one way to escape this room. He pulled up rugs and checked behind the large tapestry hanging from the wall. He climbed under the bed and checked behind every piece of furniture. There was no entrance to the slave halls from this room. He began his pacing once more, and his fingers found themselves running and pulling through his hair again. Damn it! Every second he spends here is another second they could be torturing Dean. Another second closer to the marriage ceremony. The lock clicked open and Samandriel flinched behind the stack of books when Castiel came to take them. The Prince sighed and waited for the guard to relock the door and pocket the key."Samandriel, I have known you since you were chosen to serve here at the palace. In all that time, have I ever even raised a voice to you? To anyone?" He set the books down on the desk."You have not, Your Highness." He lowered his gaze. "Then why now, would you assume that I would hurt you?" He took a step forward, but there was no flinch."Because you would be right to do so." The statement hit Castiel in the chest like a kick from an ass. He opened his mouth to speak but nothing came out. When he tried again, he could only say one word."Why?" "I saw that boy from the dungeon. I saw what they did to him. When I was chosen to serve in the Royal Guard, I was honored. I was proud to serve the Royal Family. This; what I have done today, I am not proud of. I am ashamed to follow these orders." "Then do not. Do not follow them! You are-""Only one man, Your Highness." Castiel held his breath for a moment. Samandriel was right. He is only one man."Samandriel, I need you to get a note to my brother. Without it being intercepted and read. Is that something you can do?" The guard nodded."I have a few loyal friends in the guard." "Would you trust them with your life?" "Yes." Samandriel did not hesitate. "Why?" "Because I am trusting them with mine."

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Gabriel arrived back at the stables at dawn and began to put Carmel away. The Prince had been out all night and was exhausted, but there was still so much to be done. He would not rest until Dean was safe, and thanks to Balthazar, Gabriel now had a set of keys to the dungeon. The Prince was exiting the stables when a younger guard ran into him, quite literally. He bounced off his chest and looked up, Gabriel met his eyes recognizing Kevin. "I have something for you." Kevin spoke softly after glancing around to make sure they were alone. He pulled a slip of parchment from his sleeve and held it out. As soon as the Prince took it, Kevin turned and quickly walked away. It was odd. Everything from the guard's speech and posture to the fact that whatever he had delivered was hidden in his sleeve. Gabriel unfolded the letter and began to read. His eyes grew wider as he read and once he had finished, he smiled. He knew Castiel would be great.  ~<3~ Castiel sat at the desk with a law book in front of him. This was the third time he had attempted to read this page. On a normal day he would be almost finished with a book of this size; but on a normal day lives were not at stake. There was a knock at the door, and both the Prince and the guard jumped. Samandriel quickly unlocked the door and found Kevin and Alex behind it. Alex had been a Lady-in-waiting her whole life. Her mother, Jody, held the same title and worked in the palace when she was born. She was also a close friend to the Prince, having grown up with him. Alex set a tray of food down next to Castiel who stood to give her a hug. "I am so sorry." She squeezed him and pulled back to look in his eyes as she spoke. He nodded and turned his attention to Kevin. Samandriel took the colorful bundle of clothes from Kevin before all eyes were turned to the young guard. "I was able to get the letter to Gabriel without being seen. He immediately went back to the stables and left on a guard’s horse." "Good work. Thank you, Kevin." Castiel nodded. Alex began to lay out the clothing on the bed after taking them from Samandriel. "They had it made almost a month ago. At the time, I could not wait to see it on you." Alex turned to show Castiel what he'd be wearing to the ceremony. Purple and gold; the colors of royalty. From left to right there was a golden velvet cape studded with jewels around the collar. The Royal family crest displayed proudly on the back. After, sat a knee-length, purple and gold silk tunic with an elaborate, jewel-studded velvet belt. Then leggings with swirling patterns of purple and gold. Lastly was a shining pair of leather shoes dyed purple. Their buckles were jewel encrusted. The cost of the entire outfit could feed an entire village for a week. "Your Highness?" Alex spoke gently. He blinked a few times and took a deep breath to clear his head."You are to dress me and make me presentable then?" Alex bit her lip as she nodded. "I hold no ill will towards any of you. I understand you are doing what needs to be done for now." He smiled and looked each of them in the eyes. "My loyalty lies with you, Your Highness." Samandriel bowed. "And mine," Kevin said bowing."Now and forever," Charlie added with a curtsy."Thank you all. I am honored to have earned it. Now rise, we have work to do."  ~<3~ Just before dark, the lock clicked and Castiel stopped pacing to watch the door open. Metatron stood in the doorway and Samandriel snapped to attention. He was formally dressed in an olive green and purple tunic that rested just below his waist. His sword, in a new decorative sheath, hung on his hip. "Your Highness, I am here to escort you to the church." Castiel smiled at him and the Captain stepped aside. There was a squad of guards behind him. Castiel knew them all; Garth, Bobby, Benny, Rufus, and a few others. Kevin had done well. Samandriel joined their ranks and together they encircled the Prince. Castiel was led to the palace entrance where his horse, Impala, was waiting with a gold and velvet saddle atop her. Castiel looked to Metatron with disdain. The man knew that Castiel had refused to use that type of saddle on Impala before. It was almost completely metal with limited velvet fabric between her skin and the seat. It didn't move with her or conform to her body’s movements. She couldn't run in it, which was probably the point. With a deep sigh Castiel smiled and waved to the staff who had come to see him off. There was a parade on the way to the church and people of all classes watched as he went by. He could see Charlie's closed carriage at the front followed by Lucifer and about thirty guards on horseback. Castiel turned his attention back to the people with a smile. They don't need to worry about why their Prince was troubled on his wedding day. He waved to the crowd on his left and then watched as horror grew on several faces. He looked in the direction someone pointed and there was a toddler that had wandered into the street just ahead of the last few rows of guards. The guards themselves were focused on the King and carriage ahead and had yet to see the little boy. Castiel broke rank and Impala jolted forward at the click of his tongue. He felt her twinge at what must have been the saddle biting into her, but she did as commanded and didn't stop. He rode her between two guards’ stallions, using her body to force them directly off their previous path, which lead straight to the boy. Releasing the reins, the Prince bent over and snatched the toddler up as Impala came to a halt. He pulled the crying boy to his chest and tucked his head into his neck softly. "Jack! Oh, thank God! Jack!" A woman raced from the crowd a few seconds later. Her dress was well worn and hung loosely on her thin frame. Her eyes went wide at the sight of the Prince holding and comforting her son. Suddenly very timid, she stepped into the street and approached him, only to be cut off by Lucifer stopping his stallion between her and Impala; between her and her child."You should learn to control your brat." He looked down at her with spite. He had heard the commotion and begrudgingly turned around. Tears began to swell in her eyes and Castiel could see the panic set in."Your Majesty, it was an accident." Castiel said as he continued to shush the boy and rock him gently. He dismounted, keeping the toddler in place with his right arm, and walked around Lucifer's stallion. The boy had completely stopped crying. Relief flooded across the woman's face as she took Matthew from the Prince's arms."Thank you, Your Highness, for your kindness and understanding." She curtsied as low as she could with her son in his arms. "You are welcome, now stand and enjoy the day. It will be a meaningful one." He smiled as he climbed back into his saddle. A round of applause erupted from the crowd and Castiel gave a small wave as everyone took their proper places in line so the procession could continue. It was another ten minutes before they reached the church, having laced through several unnecessary streets for the parade. Once at the steps, a boy in his early teens came and waited to take the reins from the Prince. "Would you find someone to take a look at her back, please?" He whispered as he passed the rains. In his palm he transferred a small jewel he had pried from his belt to the stable boy."Of course, Your Highness," he said with a bow. Castiel gave one last wave to the crowd before turning to enter the church. The church was abuzz with people going this way and that. Some setting up decorations and others arranging the food set up on the side. ~<3~ Charlie sat in her blue and purple ballgown across from Queen Naomi in their luxury carriage. After being dragged off she was locked in a room with a guard who just stood by the door. He hadn't answered her when she spoke, and he didn't take his eyes off her the entire time. It was almost a relief when she was taken away to be properly made-up for the wedding. "Are you nervous?" Naomi asked. Charlie turned from the window to look at her. "No, I'm wondering what Rowena is doing about now." She turned to look back out the window."And who is that?" "My beloved. She is a farm girl back in Purgatory." The Queen gave her a disapproving look just as the carriage stopped. The Queen shifted slightly in her seat and Charlie reached for the door wanting to see what was going on, but Naomi grabbed her by the wrist."Sit." They locked eyes, but Charlie did as she was told. "She has red hair, just a bit lighter than mine." She had noticed the discomfort still on the other women's face and decided to continue. "I have known her since I was a little girl. My mother would visit the market with me, and Rowena's father had the best cheese." The carriage began to move again but none of the annoyance left the Queen's face. It hurt talking about Rowena out loud; a bittersweet pain."There was a lake by her farm, and we would sneak off to go swimming. She's her most beautiful in the sunlight, with her red hair shining and wet against alabaster skin. She-""Enough! I do not know why you are bothering to tell me this, but I do not wish to hear it!""Well I do not wish to marry your son! But I suppose we do not always get our way!" It was clear on her face that no one had ever yelled at her before. If she wanted to talk about Rowena with a captive audience, she damn well would."It was at the lake that I first kissed her. I was fifteen and she was sixteen. I was so scared because I wasn't even sure she liked girls. It's so rare you know?" The scowl she received was priceless. "We were laying on the grass, just drying off at dusk. I leaned over, planning on pouring out my heart, but when she looked at me all I could see was her smile. I was sure she caught me staring and that's why I kissed her instead." A tear started to roll down the Princess' face and she wiped it with the back of her hand."I probably won't ever see her again. I did not even get to say a proper goodbye. I had told her about the marriage, and we had planned to run away together, but when my father decided we were leaving early there was nothing I could do. She saw the carriage from the market and ran after us; left her stall unattended and just ran. I only knew she was there when I heard her call my name." Tears ran freely down her face down, and her voice wavered but Naomi’s glare was gone."I tried my best to crawl out of the window when she reached it, but when I realized I couldn't fit I just took her hand in mine. I told her I loved her with all my heart, and then my father had the coachman speed up and her hand was torn from my grasp." Charlie looked up when she felt a hand on her knee. There was pity in the Queen's eyes. Charlie was about to speak again when the carriage stopped at the church."Let us go and fix your make up. You'll be a beautiful bride soon."

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Charlie heard the bridal chorus began to play on the piano and tried to take a deep breath. In. Out. In. Out."Everything will be fine, Your Highness;" A woman named Alex stood next to her, holding her bouquet. They had met in her dressing room where she and her sister Claire did their best to fix her makeup. Charlie had started to cry soon after they fixed her make up the first time. She apologized profusely, despite their assurances that she couldn't help it.She had had little spurts of tears throughout the session until they gave up entirely, cleaning everything off to avoid more smudging.Charlie reached out for the blue orchids with a trembling hand and took them from Alex. Alex gave her, what she hoped, was a comforting smile and pushed the doors to the chapel open. There were several women from her kingdom, most she didn't know, that travelled from home to be her bridesmaids. They started out one by one, and each took a spot by the alter. All eyes turned on her as the crowd stood. Charlie pulled her head back and began to march forward. She looked several people in the eyes, but no one was smiling. These beautiful people in their beautiful clothes, dressed and tucked and laced to perfection; most frowning others emotionless. Castiel was waiting for her at the alter and she sent him a sad smile as she took her place beside him. "Dearly beloved-" Charlie tuned out the pastor's words, instead trying to focus on Castiel. He had taken her hand after she had passed off the flowers to a nameless face to her right. Castiel looked completely calm. Not happy, but much better then she was for sure. How can he be this okay? Maybe it's not as much as 'okay' as it is numb. Sometimes allowing oneself to feel nothing is better than sadness.A side door to the chapel opened slightly and Gabriel slid through the crack. Most of the crowd was absorbed in the pastor's speech, and the only reason Charlie noticed was because the door was almost directly in her sight line. Now that she really thought about it, shouldn't he be up here as part of the wedding party? Her eyes followed him around and he began tapping guards on the shoulder, starting with Metatron. Her eyes watched, keeping her head as still as she could to avoid bringing attention to him."Princess?" Charlie whipped back around having entirely forgotten her soundings. The priest was holding out a ring for her to take. She had been counting and Gabriel had sent almost all the guards out of the door he came in through. "Do you, Princess Charlie Morningstar of the Kingdom of Purgatory take Prince Castiel Novak of the Novak Kingdom to be your lawfully wedded husband; to obey and respect him as long as you both shall live?"She opened her mouth to answer, but before she even started the main doors to the chapel were thrown open, a boom of heavy wood against stone shook the room. ~<3~  Castiel watched as Charlie made her way down the aisle. She had started with her head high but the closer she walked, the more she drew in on herself. He wasn't even sure that she was aware she was doing it. She reached her spot and he gently took her hand in his, hoping she would take it as a comforting gesture. She attempted a smile as the priest began to speak. It was hard to keep from vibrating out of his skin. They were taking their sweet time executing his plan and as the seconds passed, he watched the grief overtake the life from Charlie's features. He wished he could have told her; spared her of this pain, but if it backfired she could not be involved. This was his Kingdom. His responsibility. He was pulled from his head as a ring was pressed into his palm. If something didn't happen now, he didn't know what would happen. If the time came to say the 'I dos' it would be too late. "Do you, Princess Charlie Morningstar of the Kingdom of Purgatory take Prince Castiel Novak of the Novak Kingdom to be your lawfully wedded husband; to obey and respect him as long as you both shall live?"No! Where are-The thunderous sound of wood against stone rattled and all heads turned to watch as a massive group of guards, swords drawn and at the ready, began to fill the aisle and sides of the pews. Decorations were knocked over and flowers trampled underfoot. Several people in the pews began to stand but were peacefully instructed to sit back down by the invading guards.Among the guards were servants from the palace. Castiel looked over all their faces with pride. Balthazar, Bobby, Benny, Ellen, Anna, and even Crowley. Was he really deserving of such loyalty? "What is the meaning of this!" Lucifer stood forcefully, fists tightly balled at his sides. He looked to Naomi, pure shock on her face. Slowly the army parted, and Gabriel stepped forward and drew his sword. "We the people of the Novak Kingdom are here to pledge our allegiance to Prince Castiel!" Gabriel declared sword raised high. Always the dramatic one. "This is an outrage! This is unacceptable! This is-" "A revolution!" A familiar voice spoke strong and Castiel's heart sang when he saw Balthazar helping Dean move to the front line. "Guards!" Naomi shouted, but no one moved. The few guards who had been loyal to Metatron were tied and though the guests were still shocked they seemed to be more excited at the current events unfolding than the wedding. "Guards, restrain the King and Queen." Lucifer fought and it took three guards to finally hold him. The Queen surrendered and Kevin and Samandriel stood at her sides, still watching in case she decided to try anything. The crowd parted one last time and Castiel felt tears start to swell in his eyes. Bobby, the oldest, most cranky gardener stepped forward. Bobby used to work side by side with his father to tend the roses of which he was so proud. In his hands he held the glass display case of his father's crown. "It's coronation day, boy." He said quietly, the words intended for the Prince's ears alone. "Alright pastor, the wedding's off, but we need you to perform a crowning ceremony." Bobby marched forward and gently placed and opened the case. The priest, with a beaming smile, lifted the crowd. Castiel turned and smiled at Charlie who hadn't moved since the commotion started. He reached and tenderly took her by the hands guiding her down to the first pew to sit. He knelt before her, smiling up."We do not have to marry." She said it more to herself than anyone in particular."No. We do not." She turned her eyes up to meet his gaze and blinked away the tears that began to flow."We do not have to marry!" She threw herself forward, wrapping him up in her arms. He clung to her as they shared the mutual joy. He pulled back a moment later to look into her eyes. "I would very much like to meet Rowena." Then he stood and turned back to his brother who stood next to him. "The Kingdom is yours." Gabriel held out the golden Royal Scepter and Orb. Castiel could see pride and peace in his eyes as he accepted the items. "Is your Highness willing to take the oath?" The priest stepped forward, crown gently cradled in his hands. Castiel remembered it being so much bigger, but it was still just as magnificent; rubies, diamonds, and sapphires lined the gold that wrapped and weaved decoratively over the purple velvet. "I am willing." Castiel stood straight, holding the Orb and Scepter out in proper position. "Will you solemnly promise and swear to govern the peoples of the Novak Kingdom according to their respective laws and customs?" "I solemnly promise so to do." Castiel felt weightless. He had always had feelings of unease about the day he would be King. The day he would swear these things, if he would actually mean them; and he did. With his whole being, he did."Will you use your power to enact justice and mercy, to be executed in all your judgements?" "I will." He took a deep breath. He had these words memorized by heart. Not just his own, but the promises he was swearing to keep."Finally, do you Prince Castiel solemnly swear to lead these people according to their wellbeing, and not your own?" "I so swear." The Prince knelt and Gabriel took the items from his hands. "It is now, that I have the pleasure to crown you King Castiel Novak of the Novak Kingdom. Long live the King!" He gently but firmly settled the crown on Castiel's head."Long live the King!" A chant began from the crowd. Hands were thrown in the air and applauding began, while the guards drew and lifted their swords. There was motion everywhere and time seemed to slow. He had done it. They had won. The movement didn't register at first as the new king took in the scene. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Lucifer running towards him, having thrown off the guards holding him. Castiel had no weapons or anything to use as a shield. Nothing to stop the oncoming attack. Time still played in slow motion, and all he could do was watch as Lucifer pulled a knife from his belt as he charged. "No!" Dean's long cry rang out as he pulled Balthazar's sword from his hand. In a matter of seconds he had thrown himself in front of the Castiel, sword pointed out. Lucifer, not being able to stop, impaled himself on the weapon, sending himself and Dean toppling over to the hard ground. "Dean!" Castiel fell to his knees and pulled him close, gathering his limp body in his arms. Warm blood dripped from his ear and pooled on Castiel's lap. "Dean? Open your eyes, Dean. Dean!"  ~<3~ When Castiel couldn't get Dean to wake he sent out for Garth, the finest doctor in the whole of the Kingdom, to be brought to the palace. Castiel himself carried Dean to his room, followed closely by Sam and Charlie. Sam and Castiel sat on opposite sides of the bed, holding Dean's hands until Garth arrived."It's been five hours!" Castiel said as he paced along Dean's bedside. This was the third time Garth had come in to assess Dean."I am sorry, Your Majesty. With his previous injuries having gone unattended, I am afraid there is not much more I can do until he wakes up." Garth explained as Castiel cursed the guards who hurt Dean. "You mean if he wakes up." Sam sniffled across the room in the chair Castiel had had brought up for him. The new King stood and went to his side. He placed his hand on the younger boy's back. He began to rub gentle circles and gently shushed him."He will. I promise we are going to do everything we can to bring him back to us." Castiel hadn't cried yet, if he allowed himself to cry it would mean, in his eyes, letting go of his control. He couldn't do that, though in this moment he came very close. He had to be strong for Sam as well as for Dean.Castiel was pulled from his thoughts by a knock at his door. "I'll get it on my way out. I will be back to check in again in an hour, Your Majesty." Castiel nodded as Garth started towards the door. "My King," Balthazar began, "your mother wishes to speak with you." Castiel stood nodding and made his way across the room. As he reached the door, he turned back to look at Dean. He wanted nothing more than to sit at his bedside and hold his hand; but he was the King now. He made promises and had sworn to put the Kingdom first. So, talking with his mother was a proper start. Castiel followed Balthazar to one of the many sitting rooms and nodded at Kevin, who stood guard outside the door. The younger guard unlocked the door and held it open. "Would you like-" Balthazar began."No, I should speak to her alone." Castiel said as he shut the door behind him. His mother was sitting with a book open on her lap. A tea tray set on the table at her side. "It took you long enough." Her voice emotionless, as she turned a page."I had more important matters to attend to." Naomi shut the book one handed, making sure it rang out as it clapped. "Well then." She humphed, standing to face her son. "I suspect you have some questions. To be frank, I would rather this be over sooner than later. That being said, I am the King. I will be seeing to all Royal matters from criminal trials to taxes. I will be making changes to laws as I see fit. You have no power to manipulate anyone or anything, and no authority over anyone but yourself." He spoke watching anger grow on his mother's face."And exactly what do you plan to do with me?" She asked steel-toned. "Nothing. You were doing what you thought best for the Kingdom. You shall be welcome here, or if you wish to leave, for whatever reason, you still have access to the Royal funds- under my supervision of course." He watched as the information sank in."What am I to do with myself?" She asked."That is up to you. Now, I have other matters to see to." Castiel knocked on the door and it opened."See that my mother gets to bed." Kevin nodded and Castiel started back to Dean's room.  ~<3~ Castiel fell asleep at Dean's side that night and was woken by Charlie. They had a long day ahead of them. "It started with Charlie and I going over paperwork. She's in charge of the Purgatory Kingdom now. It turns out that Lucifer had our Kingdom under his thumb since my father died." Castiel whispered. It had been 26 hours since Dean had lost consciousness. This was the first time all day that the new King had a moment to even breathe and come Hell or high water he was doing it at Dean's side. "It took a few hours, but Charlie and I worked it out; livestock, grains and produce. It's a fair-trade system." Castiel brushed a tuft of hair back from Dean's face, leaving his thumb to run back and forth across his warm skin. "Then we held the trials for the guards who hurt you, and the others who resisted. All but two swore allegiance to me- I'm still not used to hearing that. Only two, Metatron and Uriel, refused." He snuggled in closer, nuzzling his head to Dean's chest. "They were the ones who did this to you. I wanted them dead. I still do; but I swore to enact justice, and mercy. Mercy. It was difficult to decide, but they are to be jailed. Ten years, with the charges of abuse of power and acts of cruelty." "You're a good King." Castiel thought he imagined the soft words, but when he felt a squeeze from Dean's hand, his heart stopped. "Dean." He whispered as tears began to slip from his eyes. He leaned in and went to place a gentle kiss to his cheek, but Dean turned and their lips gently met. Castiel pulled away a second later. "Someone fetch Garth!" He shouted and door flew open. "Is everything okay? I was on my way and-" The doctor stopped to smile at the two cuddling close. Dean under the covers and Castiel on top, still protectively leaning over him. Garth ushered him back as he began to examine Dean's head. He had him following his fingers and reaching forward with one eye closed. Castiel had no idea why but Dean was passing these tests with flying colors and that was all that mattered to him. "I want someone with him at all times. I'm still going to be checking hourly, but this is good. I think we can look forward to a full cognitive recovery." Castiel stood to shake the doctor's hand, which greatly surprised him. Garth gave them both a genuine grin before leaving."Where is Sam?" Dean laid back and Castiel sat at his side on the bed. "Sleeping. I've set him up with his own room. I have one picked out for you as well-" Castiel stopped when he felt Dean's hand on his arm. "Am I not welcome in yours?" His tone wasn't sad, only slightly confused."I wasn't sure-" "I am. If you'll have me." Tears started back in his's eyes as Dean spoke. "Yes. Of course I'll have you." He leaned down to give Dean a proper kiss and was enveloped in strong arms that guided him back down. They fell asleep that night in each other's arms and dreamed of the bright future to come. ~The End~
