Work Text

A pleasing summer’s breeze caresses his face as he looks to the window. In the corner, the clock shaped like an owl visualizes the seconds of his life ticking away. It’s overly loud in his ears, with the quiet surrounding him. Through the window, the soft rustling of trees and bird’s songs filter to him. The air is thick and warm inside, in this room that used to be filled with memories. Yet, where were the memories he’d always wanted to have?Countless of years had he told himself he’d do it, countless more he hadn’t done it. After many more, he’d decided to never do it. He’d held strong to his conviction, only to now, at the dusk of his life, break down. All of his money had he spent on a shifty guy, who now held all his hopes. He prays that it hasn’t all been for naught, that he still has a chance. The ground moves as he sways on his chair, the wood dark and cracked from many, uncountable days that had passed since it stood here. Soon, it’s time would be over as well, but for today, it would last.On the porch, the ticking of the clock is barely audible. As if time itself slowed down, amiably allowing his life to be just a moment longer. The trees bend with the wind, the birds continue to share their songs and the grasses sway like waves in the ocean. Once vivid flowers have long since lost their colours in this late summer’s eve. His eyes stay on the horizon, following the form of a slowly approaching figure. Warm eyes find his, staying and never leaving. The sky never stops its inevitable darkening, while the two share the view of the last colours being drowned out of the air. They sit close, fingers wrapped around each other in the quiet that follows. The sky is dark above them, stars twinkling merrily. His smile is peaceful as he breathes out, gradually and softly, with a smile, for the last time.It had been fifty years, hadn’t it? It had been too long, yet, still, his hands felt exactly the same as they had the first time they touched.
