Shinsou smooths his shirt again, staring at himself in the mirror. He’s trembling. He wasn’t even this nervous before the UA entrance exams. He checks his hair, grimaces at the permanent bags under his eyes. Is he really cute enough for--for Class 1-A’s sunshine boy? Is he
worthy
of Midoriya Izuku?
He closes his eyes and counts to ten, opens them, and stares into his own eyes. Shinsou winces and scrubs his hands through his hair again. It makes the purple strands stand up more, look even
more
voluminous, but it gives Shinsou the boost of confidence he needs. “I can do this. He asked
me
on a date.”
Shinsou flushes, remembering how Midoriya ran after him after class. At first Shinsou had missed what Midoriya was saying. He was both enraptured by the faint blush on the shorter boy’s cheeks and that Midoriya was talking 100 miles a minute. It was easy to miss what Midoriya was saying like that.
“--so, uh, it’s totally fine if you don’t, but I would really love t-to talk with you more, and, uhm, ah, well, you’re very handsome--I mean! We can just get to know each other! I--Ah, it’s fine, I’ll talk to you later, Shinsou-san.”
“Wait! Uh, what? What did you ask me?”
Shinsou wasn’t entirely sure what Midoriya had been saying. But it sounded like--
“Are you… asking me on a
date
?”
Midoriya turned bright red and Shinsou’s heart fluttered into his throat.
“Ah, it doesn’t have to be a date! I--I just thought maybe we could get some food--maybe ramen or--”
“I’d love to go on a date with you!”
Shinsou hadn’t intended on sounding so eager but… Midoriya beamed and his face was so bright when he agreed.
And now it’s The Day. Shinsou’s never ever been on a date before. People avoid him, so he’d assume that’s how it would be his entire life. He was used to watching from afar and being unable to gain the trust of anyone long-term. But here he is. He’s in the top hero school and he’s been accepted to transfer into the hero program. Shinsou has the opportunity to make real, lasting friends ever since coming to UA.
And then Midoriya asks him on a date.
Shinsou had noticed him long before their first face-off in the sports festival. He saw the green hair one afternoon during lunch and was intrigued. Shinsou had heard of the boy who got 7th place with no villain points. At first a little bubble of jealousy formed in the pit of Shinsou’s gut. He
resented
that the other boy had somehow gotten into the program without putting forth any apparent effort. But then he fought Midoriya in the sports festival and something changed. That bubble of jealousy changed into something else. At first it was harmless admiration. Maybe a little gratitude because that fight had made Aizawa-sensei see something in him. He couldn’t help pestering Aizawa-sensei about the green-haired boy.
“Are you here to train or to gossip like an old woman,”
Aizawa-sensei huffed during one of their sessions. He tightened his capture weapon around Shinsou’s wrists and sighed. His teacher yanked the capture weapon free of Shinsou, toppling the boy over.
“Don’t waste my time.”
Shinsou glances at his watch and yelps. He’s going to be late if he doesn’t get going now. He can’t leave the world’s cutest, sweetest, most amazing, puts-the-sun-out-of-business-- Shinsou blushes at himself. He’s already whipped and they haven’t even gone on this date yet. He jogs all the way to the gate in the golden light of the setting sun. There, standing and waiting, is Midoriya.
The light catches Midoriya’s hair just right, making the green look impossibly radiant.
All
of Midoriya looks impossibly radiant in this lighting. He’s wearing a nice shirt and some
skinny
jeans paired with his signature red shoes. Shinsou trips a bit as his brain processes that Midoriya Izuku is wearing
skinny jeans
for their
date
.
Oh god, right. This is a date. Are they going to hold hands? Should Shinsou pay? Or are they going to split the bill? Oh geez, Shinsou really hadn’t thought the logistics through. But it’s too late to back out now. He offers a small smile to Midoriya and his date (date!) smiles back.
“Hi!” Midoriya smiles brightly at Shinsou. It’s like looking at the brightest star in the night sky.
“Hi.” Shinsou shuffles and stuffs his hands into his pockets, suddenly self-conscious.
“I thought we could go to this ramen place close by, unless you want to get something else! We could go to this yakitori place, but it might be expensive--or we could just get onigiri or go to karaoke or--” With each word out of Midoriya’s mouth Shinsou sees him slip into that overthinking spiral he’s witnessed so many times before.
Before he can think about it, Shinsou reaches out and takes Midoriya’s hand. Midoriya startles and looks directly at Shinsou for the first time since they greeted each other. “Ramen sounds great.”
Shinsou waits to see if Midoriya will take his hand away, but instead the other boy laces their fingers together, face bright red and says, “Then let’s get ramen.”
***
The date goes surprisingly well. The ramen is good, but the company is better. Midoriya is more than happy to fill the silence himself, prompting and coaxing Shinsou out of his shell. At one point Shinsou asks, “You’re not worried I’m going to use my Quirk on you?”
Midoriya stops, food halfway to his mouth and considers. “No, I’m not. You wouldn’t use your Quirk unless it was necessary. So, I’m not worried.” The other boy beams. He eats his food and swallows, still smiling at Shinsou.
“I trust you, Shinsou.” A tender smile appears on Midoriya’s face and Shinsou is smacked with the full force of his feelings for the boy in front of him. He blushes and looks back at his bowl, poking at a fish cake. It really is good ramen. Midoriya goes back to talking and Shinsou spends the rest of the date feeling like he’s floating.
They walk back to campus holding hands, fingers interlocked. Both Shinsou and Midoriya are blushing the whole time. Shinsou asks Midoriya questions about all sorts of mundane things, but Midoriya answers enthusiastically and thoughtfully. Shinsou can tell he’s in so deep. It’s really all to distract himself from how badly he wants to kiss Midoriya. Is that even appropriate for a first date?
The closer they get to the gates, the more nervous Shinsou gets. Does Midoriya want to kiss him? If Shinsou asks, would Midoriya feel like he had no choice if he answers verbally?
Midoriya tugs them into a secluded spot not far from the gates. The sun has been set for hours now so the shadows can help hide their identities from any passerbys. Midoriya is bright red even in the darker shadows. He’s chewing on his bottom lip and looks shyly up at Shinsou.
“Shinsou, can--c-can I kiss you? I really want to kiss you.”
“Yes, please do,” Shinsou replies, leaning down to even out the difference in their heights. Midoriya makes a pleased sound and before Shinsou can fully process this as real, the other boy’s lips are on his. Midoriya’s lips are warm, a little chapped from biting. It’s chaste and full of nerves. Shinsou has no idea how Midoriya worked up the nerve but he’s happy he did.
“Can we do that again, soon?” Shinsou asks, still close to Midoriya.
The other boy giggles and leans up to steal another kiss. “Definitely.”
