1. “Mr. Laich, will you stay after class please?” Mike Green asked. Brooks Laich was one of his star students, and Mike had an opportunity that he thought Brooks would enjoy (and could earn some college credits for).“Yes Mr. Green.”Once everyone had left and it was just Mike and Brooks in the classroom, Mike told Brooks about the counselor position at the outdoor school that was open. “I think you’d be good at it.”“Yeah. Sure. Thanks Mr. Green.”“Sure.” 2. Mike asked Brooks to stay late again; this time, it was to tell Brooks about a science scholarship.“Thanks Mr. Green.” Brooks said, taking the application from Mike. “See you tomorrow for lab.”“Yep.” 3. After class, Mike caught Brooks’ attention. Brooks stayed after without being asked.“I want your opinion on today’s class. Was it too hard?”“Nah. It is Advanced Chem after all.” Brooks laughed.“Ok. Thanks.” 4. “Mr. Laich.” Mike’s voice was firm. He didn’t have to say another word.Brooks didn’t even try to move; he knew he was in trouble. “Mr. Green, I can explain.”“Well, start. I’m going to need an explanation to tell to Principal Toretella.”“It was an accident. I didn’t know it was going to have that kind of reaction.”“I see. And, were you not listening when I said that those two elements were volatile?”“No.” Brooks admitted. “Sorry.”“I’ll see how I can explain it. Next time, let’s be a little more careful, eh?”“Yes sir.” 5. “Brooks.” Mike said as Brooks handed Mike his homework for the last time.“Yes Mr. Green?”“It’s been a honor to teach you, and I wish you all the best as you go on.”“Thanks. You’ve taught me so much.” Brooks said. 1. Mike was hunched over his desk when Brooks came into the room. “Mr. Green?”Mike’s head shot up. “Brooks? What are you doing here?”“Well, I was on break, and I wanted to see if you were still teaching.”“Yep. Getting ready to retire though. Think I’ve had all the noisy high schoolers I can take.” Mike laughed.“Oh.” Brooks laughed. “Well, that’s not soon, right? Cause that’s why I’m here. I need to student teach for my degree.”“Wait, you went to be a teacher?”“Yeah. A certain science teacher really inspired me.” Brooks grinned. “Even if he did yell at me.”Mike laughed. “Sure. Retirement can wait a year. I’d love to help you.”
