Work Text
They tried this at least once a month. Sometimes it took all they had, which is why it would only happen the once. Even when they had fun, sometimes it took so much energy to repeat so soon afterward. They had had an awful time at the beginning of the month, so Chisato wasn’t about to ask Kanon to venture out any distance for a while yet. They could remain closer to home, with the cafés and restaurants they were familiar with. But their shared day off started with Kanon showing Chisato her phone. “What do you think?”“Pistachio latte?”“Sounds interesting, doesn’t it?”It really did. Chisato had never heard of such a thing before. Trying it with Kanon had shot up to near the top of her “non-work” list.“I… wrote down the trains we’d need to catch,” Kanon added next.Chisato would double check it herself. The last time Kanon had done it on her own she had written one of the connections wrong. Not that it mattered, because Chisato had gotten them on the wrong first train. One day she would stop panicking about missing her train. And, in turn, would then stop rushing to get on the first one leaving.“Let’s do it.”They would be at this café by lunch.Or by dinner.Kanon cradled the puppy in her arms. Neither had been able to leave him behind.“Kokoro-chan will help us make posters,” Kanon said.“A found dog poster shouldn’t describe the dog,” Chisato said. “Only say one is found. Whoever calls has to describe who they have lost. It’s how you know they are truly the owner.”Kanon nodded, the coffee-coloured mischief maker wiggling in her arms. Somehow it wasn’t enough for Kanon to drop him. And he looked happy enough to be there.Chisato and Kanon looked at the café. It was still open, but…“I can wait out here with him,” Kanon said. “I don’t mind.”Chisato peered in through the front window. The aesthetics of the café were gorgeous. She loved it. If Pastel*Palettes had gotten to present this place, she could have had many positive comments without having to think too hard.Yet they had missed their train. And found another line. Then gone down the wrong road. Found a stray dog. Not seen the café three times until spotting it at the last moment.“I’ll ask them what they think they can serve to us out here,” Chisato said.Kanon smiled. “Thank you.”“And the pistachio latte.”A giggle. “And the pistachio latte.”The dog barked. Not like she had time for a new puppy, Chisato considered as she entered the café. But while they were holding onto him, she thought she might call him Pistachio.
