Important Day

Work Text

It was an important day and I had planned it all out weeks ago. I held Theo against my hip with one hand while I set out food with the other. It was a small tray of chocolate fondue, with equal amounts of fruit and sweet treats layed around it. Paper plates and forks were placed next to the array. I laid the gift on the counter. Thomas would be home soon and everything needed to be perfect; he deserved a happy day just for him. Our child was getting squirmy so I set him down in the corner, letting him play with his blocks. It took another hour for my beloved to get home from whatever task Lara sent him on. It was evening, sun ready to set. He came through the door looking tired but greeted me with a smile as he always did. A quick hello to Theo (who was currently too focused on his toys) before he carefully wrapped his arms around me. "Evening, love." It felt good to have him close to me. I don't let myself linger on the fact that one day he might not come home. Today was supposed to be a happy one for our little family. "Do you know what day it is?""Sunday? Or is it Monday already? It's certainly felt like a Monday-"My beloved sometimes missed the obvious. "It's Father's Day!""Oh." He pulled back a little. I'd hoped for maybe joy or amusement or even surprise. He seemed more confused and uncertain. For a moment I doubted, wondering if I'd overstepped. We'd only had Theo for a couple months after all. And it wasn't as if his White Court family would ever celebrate it. Maybe I had assumed too much. "It hadn't even crossed my mind," he admitted a little sheepishly. "Guess I'm not used to suddenly being a dad."It's a small comfort that I hadn't upset him. I pulled Thomas into the kitchen. "You get first pick."We eventually ended up all on the couch, curled up together with plates of chocolate-covered food. Theo kept trying to take all of the sweets. The gift was a tie. While neither of us had any experience with normal fathers, the Internet had assured me it was a popular holiday tradition. It was a process but we were figuring things out.
