The sight beyond the curtains was blurry with streaks of rain, the stars hidden under blankets of clouds. She kept her gaze on the storm that consumed the outside for a few more seconds before refocusing her eyes on her saddened reflection in the window. Kokoro’s was right next to her, a perplexed expression on her gentle features.“Where did all this rain come from?” Hagumi pouted, her dolefulness bringing her to tightly grip her half of the curtain. “It was supposed to be clear tonight!”“The chances were low when I checked, so either tonight was unlucky or the percentage rose since then.” Kokoro stayed where she was and glued her eyes to her girlfriend’s reflection. “I’m sorry, Hagu. I wish I could do something about the weather.”“It’s alright.” The smaller girl sniffled, letting go of the curtain to wipe her eyes. She took a few steps back and sank to the floor, pulling her knees to her chest. “It’s not like I was looking forward to stargazing with you or anything.”The blonde pulled away from the window to join her on the ground. She wrapped an arm around her shoulders, pulling her close and rubbing the area of her collarbone that her loose tank top strap failed to cover. Hagumi leaned into her side with a small whine while her sunshine rested her cheek on top of her head.“I know you really wanted to do this tonight, Guppy. We can always try for tomorrow!”“But my parents won’t let me sleepover two nights in a row!”“That’s okay! We’ll stick with a late night! And if we can’t do it tomorrow, then we’ll try for next week! Whatever happens, I promise you that we will go stargazing soon. And once we’re out of high school, we’ll move into a house that will let us do it every night!”She laughs at Kokoro’s enthusiasm, but it doesn’t fill the void caused by the weather’s timing.“Thanks, Kokoron. But it’s not gonna be the same.”“I know, but maybe it will be better! We might get to see something special that we wouldn’t have today! Plus,”She removed her arm and lifted her head from Hagumi’s, changing her position to face her. The ginger lowered her knees a little as her cheeks were cupped and brought to meet Kokoro’s glittering eyes. The moonlight from outside gave her features a gentle glow while highlighting the infatuation and adoration that swirled in her golden gaze.“Just because the sky’s all gloomy doesn't mean we can’t see the stars!”Her brow quirked at the phrasing, unsure of what Kokoro meant.“What do you mean, Kokoron?”She beamed at the question, sliding her hands from the ginger’s face to her neck and along her shoulders, stopping at her dainty hands.“Well, have you ever thought about how you’re freckles are like stars?”“Huh? They are?”“Yeah! Your skin is scattered in freckles, just like how the sky is full of stars! They make all sorts of pretty shapes and patterns! And they’re all on you? Hagumi Kitazawa, I may be your sunshine, but you are my starry sky -and I’m more than happy to be rained in if it means I can stargaze with the angle kisses that cover you.”Her eyes lit up, the tears from before welling up as she flusteredly tried to settle into her emotions.“I-I— They— You— Umm…” She glanced around her field of vision, finding it hard to focus on her girlfriend after that sweet confession. Heat blossomed under her speckled cheeks, bringing her to lower her head in self-consciousness. Her attention was then drawn to the way Kokoro held her hands: tender and patient. “Really?”“Mhm! You know I wouldn’t lie to you!”“I know that, i-it’s just that… that’s the sweetest thing anyone has ever said to me!” Tears fall from her eyes and down her face to meet with her dotted legs -a polar opposite of what’s happening outside. She reached for her girlfriend, crying in heartfelt joy and guilt. Her head was fuzzy, her chest full, her body shaky; everything was buzzing yet empty while she fought the thoughts that told her she wasn’t worthy of such meaningful words.Kokoro held her small darling close as she cried, comforting her as much as her mortal body could. She petted her hair and kissed her ear and rubbed her back, allowing Hagumi to do what she needed, as long as she needed.“Thank you, Kokoron.” Pulling away, she kept her hands on her shoulders, giving them a gentle squeeze. “I… I don’t know what I did to deserve you.”“You were you! That’s all that mattered to me, and that continues to be the case with every day we’re together!” She goes in to kiss her forehead, eliciting a small giggle from her sweetheart. “As for deserving things, you deserve nothing but the best!”Hagumi tried to push her statement away but was left stuttering as Kokoro moved to kiss her cheeks, followed by her nose, then her lips to cut off her negativity. She kissed back with the same kindness, allowing herself to live in the moment and accept the love that was being given to her. The blonde brought her hands back up to cup her face, bringing her nightfall closer until they were in desperate need of air.“I love you so much, Guppy.” She brushed her thumb against her soft skin, encouraging a rush of energy to surge through her small frame. A smile squirmed into place, autumn eyes shimmering in the moonlight.“I love you too, Kokoron.”“Now,” Kokoro’s grin grew as she squished her face, slightly distorting her expression into something she found even cuter. “Shall we do what no person has done before and stargaze upon your skin of night to name the constellations that reside?”“You sound like Kaoru!”They laugh, bringing their foreheads and hands together.“So?” She drew out the question with a head tilt after pulling away and catching her breath.Hagumi giggled once more, sharing a smile with her girlfriend -the best one the world would ever know.“Of course you can, Kokoron! I’ve been wanting to stargaze with you all week!”
