Nicole was living a nightmare. This couldn’t be real right? How could this be happening to her? She was on autopilot since she got out of her bed this morning. Now stuck in a meeting room of Haught Industries, her dull eyes unfocused, staring into nothingness. She was oblivious to the chaos surrounding her, which was until she felt someone tap on her shoulder. She jumped slightly and looked up to find Randy Nedley, one of her Dad’s business partners looking down at her with worry in his eyes. She hadn’t said a word since she’d arrived for the meeting and he senses something is off. He understands what’s going on. It’s never easy dealing with the loss of a parent, even though said parent was a total jerk. He knows he shouldn’t think badly of his dead friend but facts cannot be changed. Nicholas Haught may have been a prominent and well established business man in Canada, but he was never a family man. To top it all, his ex-wife had showed up with her lawyers to stake out claim in the business. Randy, however had always been fond of Nicole and is heartbroken to see her completely withdrawn. He just wished he knew how to help “You okay there kid”? She doesn’t answer, but looks away blinking rapidly, trying her best to focus on what’s being said by the other attendees. But it’s all too much. Her head is already clouded with so many thoughts, she isn’t capable of comprehending anything else. Since the sudden death of her father six months back, she’s been facing issues at work with her estranged mother, who is threatening the company with a law suit. If everyone involved didn’t come to a mutual agreement soon enough, she could lose the company, risking the jobs of so many of her loyal employees. Jeopardizing everything she had worked so hard to achieve. All of this has taken a toll on her professional life and she hadn’t been able to focus on work. And as if the universe wasn’t done torturing her, her one last hope, the only person who was keeping her sane, her girlfriend of two years, Shae, the love of her life or so she thought, had dumped her for someone else. She moved on pretty quickly too and is getting married. Today. Yeah, it was all getting too much. She felt like she was stuck in quick sand. The more she struggled to get out, the more she felt pulled in. There was no escape and she couldn’t breathe. She could sense a panic attic coming on. Her heart was beating rapidly and palms started to feel sweaty. It felt like someone was choking her and her lungs were on fire. She had to get out of here before she embarrassed herself in front of everyone. She pushed herself off the chair and rushed out of the room and went straight to the washroom. She held on to the wash basin like her life depended on it, taking slow, deep breaths tried to calm herself down. She splashed cold water on her face before standing upright, willing her breaths to keep coming against the sharp constriction in her throat. She stared at her reflection in the mirror while unfastening her tie. Her face was paler than usual, her chin length flaming red hair a stark contrast against her skin. Fatigue was slowly taking over her body and she was rapidly losing the will to maintain a brave face for the world. She wanted to just cut off from everything and everyone around her. Lost in thought, she slowly made her way out of the company building, got into her BMW and drove off. She had no idea where she was headed, it was as if her brain had short circuited. She aimlessly drove around Toronto city for a while before randomly entering a parking lot. **************************************************************************************** Waverly was super charged. She was going home to Purgatory. She couldn’t wait to see her sister, her niece and her aunt and uncle. She had moved to Toronto 4 years ago and attended University of Toronto, recently graduating with a degree in History and Ancient Languages. Sitting in the backseat of the Uber she thought of how these 4 years had changed her for the better. Moving out of Purgatory was the best decision of her life. She couldn’t wait to see what else was in store for her in the future. She did have an idea. Of Course she did. She was a planner after all. She let out a content and happy sigh. Soon enough, the driver was pulling in outside the Union Station. She grabbed her backpack and hurried out of the car, while the driver helped her get the luggage out of the trunk. She thanked him and rushed towards the station, wheeling her luggage behind her. She wanted to check-in her luggage well in advance. She was an hour early and didn’t want to mess anything up. She had waited four years for this day, worked extra shifts at the university café whole of last year and taken up a part time job at the university library too, to make up some extra cash. Finally saving enough to purchase a westbound train ticket to make this journey aboard the Canadian from Toronto to Edmonton. It’s not that she hadn’t visited home these 4 years. She did; every summer and winter break, except last year when she decided to stay back due to the course load. Also her roommate wouldn’t stop talking about the world’s greatest train journeys. The trans-continental train from Toronto to Vancouver. Waverly had quickly gone into research mode and read everything she possibly could about this seemingly epic journey. And here she was, walking as fast as she could towards the check-in counter unable to curb the excitement that was coursing through her body. Luggage checked in she decided to head straight towards the platforms. As she hurried along she pulled out her phone to send a quick text to Wynonna, her older sister, letting her know she would be boarding soon. She continued walking while typing out the message. Just as she was about to click the send button she collides into something or someone. -“Oh FUDGE NUGGETS” she yelped. The person she had run into lost their balance and fell backwards right on their behind. “Oh my God!! I’m so so sorry. Are you alright? Urrghh!! I’m such a klutz. Here let me help you” she rambled offering the beautiful red headed stranger her hand. *************************************************************************************************** Nicole was stood at one of the platforms at the Union Station. Mind still hazy she was oblivious to her surroundings, staring ahead, thinking of nothing and everything at the same time, if that was even possible. Wanting nothing more than for all this pain to go away. The arrival of a train snaps her back to reality. She looks around totally confused. She realizes she’s at the train station, but no idea how she got there. She shuts her eyes trying to retrace her steps. She remembers parking the car somewhere and getting out, but doesn’t remember walking in here. Opening her eyes she watches as the train leaves. She can’t help feel jealous of all those people who are on board, who are aware of their destinations, while she is stuck in this dark tunnel with no light for miles. Lost, hurting and heartbroken she convinces herself there’s no way out of this. She can hear another train approaching in the distance. Just a few steps towards the edge of the platform and this could all be over. Right? She would finally be free of all the pain and darkness. She tries to move but her legs feel like lead. She is petrified but what choice does she have. She takes a shaky step forward and the next thing she knows she has landed flat on her butt. Someone ran into her forcing her to lose her balance. The fall momentarily dazes her. She can hear someone apologizing, offering their hand to help her up but she makes no attempt to leave the floor of the platform. Instead she looks up and finds herself looking into guilt ridden hazel eyes of a young woman. At that very moment the train she’d heard earlier passes by the station and her eyes flit between the train and the brunette hovering above her. The gravity of what she was about to do hits her full force. A wave of shame and guilt envelopes her. Ashamed that a complete stranger had witnessed the weakest and lowest moments of her life. She feels exposed and vulnerable. She releases a shaky breath to only realize that she’d been holding it in all this while. She hastily pulls herself off the ground and tries to dust her slacks and blazer while deliberately avoiding further eye contact with the woman in front of her, hoping she’d leave. But the woman is persistent if nothing else. - ‘I’m Waverly by the way, and once again I’m really sorry. I was looking into my phone and wasn’t paying attention” Nicole’s head snapped up at this, she searched those hazel eyes for pity and judgement, but found none. She felt relief wash over her. Waverly hadn’t noticed anything. Words failed Nicole though and she continued staring at her like a lost puppy.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
-“Hey are you sure you’re okay? Don’t mind me but you look a little lost. Where are you headed? I could totally help you find the right platform” Waverly rambles arms flailing in all directions. That’s when she notices the ticket in her hand “Oh shoot, here’s your ticket. It slipped out of your hand while you were trying to break your fall” she said holing it out. -“My ticket”? Nicole asks dumbly, her voice cracking from lack you use. “That can’t be mine” she went on, sounding unsure and confused. Taking the ticket from Waverly, she racks her brains, but can't seem to remember purchasing one. How zoned out was she? ‘Geez Nicole get a fucking grip. This woman…. Waverly must think you are off your rockers’ she internally chastised herself. -“Huh!! You can talk? Waverly dramatically feigned surprise. “For a moment there I thought you couldn’t, you know” she said letting out a small giggle. “By the way, that is your ticket” She said daring Nicole to refute it. “I literally saw it slip out of your hand. How could you forget getting one? She asked clearly amused. “You’re not high on something are you”? She chuckled wriggling her eyebrows. “Not that I’m judging, but dude you look really strung out” She was gawking at Nicole like she was some kind of exhibit in a museum. “Look I know we’ve just met, but you can talk to me. I am a great listener and a problem solver” she continued with smug smile. “Come on let’s see that ticket of yours. I’m going to help you get onto the right train.” she said excitedly. A bit too excitedly. “Besides I feel really bad that I ran into you and made you fall on your heinie” She almost grabbed the ticket back from Nicole’s hand. “Hey you’ve booked The Canadian too. Yours is for Vancouver. I get off at Edmonton. This is so exciting” She squealed “Now come on we don’t want to miss the most epic journey of our lives” she literally dragged Nicole towards their platform. Nicole wanted to argue but was so worn out, she just let Waverly lead her. For now. ******************************************************************* The train arrives and it’s a whopping 26 cars. A long train for an even longer journey. Coincidentally they both have seats in the same car. Waverly rushes to find it while Nicole tries her best to keep up with this high spirited human. Once boarded they look for their seats. “This is me” says Waverly pointing to a sleeper berth to her right. She carefully places her backpack on the seat and takes another look at Nicole’s ticket. Her Seat is a few rows down. She points that out and flops into her own seat letting out a content sigh. Thanking Waverly, Nicole quickly tries to get to hers. -“Hey why don’t you sit with me for bit? Waverly suggested. “Wouldn’t you get bored with just yourself for company? I know I would. That’s why I brought along a few books” she said patting her backpack “you know to catch up on some reading. I mean I wasn’t planning on bumping into someone now, was I? And definitely not planning on bumping into a co –passenger. How cool is that”? She rubbed her palms excitedly. Nicole was really starting to get annoyed. Seemed like Waverly didn’t give a rat’s ass about boundaries and peoples personal spaces. “Look…..” She started but had to stop to clear her throat. “Thank you for all your help, but I think I can manage by myself from here on” she continued stiffly. -“Oh it’s nothing” Waverly cuts in. “I like helping people. And admit it. You do need my help” She adds cheekily. “I mean who buys a ticket and forgets about it? Come on now… spill. I’m a problem solver remember”? Waverly pushes with that infuriatingly cheery voice of hers and honestly Nicole has had enough of this overly enthusiastic, meddlesome, sparkly eyed, giggly human. -“Okay, that’s ENOUGH”. Nicole didn’t mean to raise her voice. But she didn’t care. “You know what? At this very moment, you are my problem. We are practically strangers, yet you haven’t shut up since we met. Do you have any idea how weird that is? I don’t care if you are a good listener or an agony aunt. You can’t take a hint can you? Then let me be clear. I-WANT-TO-BE-LEFT-ALONE” Nicole wasn’t in any sense a rude or nasty person. She was in fact extremely kind, funny, goofy and charming. But she really wanted to be left to her own devices. Waverly had a sunny disposition. She was all sorts of chirpy and happy and chatty. And even though one might think of her as intrusive, she was overflowing with positivity. The exact opposite of what Nicole was feeling. And she didn’t have the mind space to deal with this right now. She wanted to wallow in self-pity, be mad and angry, and maybe punch something or someone. Waverly just stares at her wide eyed, her mouth slightly open. Just then an announcement rings out and the train starts moving. This and the look on Waverly’s face combined, forces Nicole to back down. Her breathing is ragged and shallow. She is instantly mortified by her behavior. Looking away from the brunette she takes a moment to calm herself down. Once the anger has dissipated she visibly winces as she recalls her outburst. She slowly and hesitantly looks back at Waverly with apologetic eyes, clearly expecting an upset and outraged brunette to reprimand her. But is surprised to see Waverly giving her a small, knowing smile and there is nothing but understanding in those bright hazel eyes. Nicole drops herself on the seat opposite Waverly’s “Hey…… I’m extremely sorry” She apologizes. “That was so uncalled for. You didn’t deserve that. Once again I’m really sorry”. She whispers that last bit sounding every bit dejected. -“Nah, don’t worry about it” Waverly waves her hand, dismissing the apology. “It was clearly displaced anger. I mean it’s pretty obvious that something’s bothering you. So I’m letting you off the hook this time” she gave Nicole a wide smile. Nicole is stunned by her reaction. She literally just screamed at this woman and she didn’t even flinch. How can one be so spirited and optimistic, she wonders? -“Besides nothing upsets me these days. Would you like to know why”? Waverly asks her animatedly like she was about to disclose a very important secret. Now it’s Nicole’s turn to stare. “I’m in love” she sighs with a dreamy look in her eyes. “And I’m getting married” she practically squeals, a dopey smile plastered on her face. “His name is Perry. He’s an Assistant Curator at the Art and History Museum in Jasper” She says smugly clearly proud of her boyfriend’s achievements. “We met in College. He was my senior. We started off as friends before he eventually asked me out. I’m going to move in with him after I visit my family. You see, I have it all planned. Yup I’m a planner”. Waverly’s brain is running faster than the train, that’s is pretty clear. And Nicole is left flabbergasted. She can’t figure out if she should try and catch up, pretend to listen or just plain ignore. Completely unaware of her co-passenger inner conflict, Waverly happily continues her one sided blabbering. “First I go home, visit my folks tell them about Perry and then move in with him. Once I settle in, which won’t take long hopefully, I hunt for a job. There are quite a few schools in Jasper. I would love to teach History to little kids. I also want to save enough to earn a Master’s degree someday. I’m going to live my best life. And to top it all I don’t have to pay to visit the museum” she lets out a loud chuckle. Nicole remains silent throughout, trying hard to focus on the sound of Waverly voice, her mind however is too disarrayed to grasp the words being animatedly spoken by the girl sitting in front of her. The low rumble of the train combined with the voices inside her head, gradually drowns out the brunette’s voice.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
The train has long left Toronto behind. The buzz of the city is now replaced by the gentle swaying of the train which is gliding past boreal forests and lakes. They are currently crossing the Great Canadian Shield. The sun is slowly sinking and the trees are now emitting a beautiful orangey-yellow hue. The sky seems like a never ending painting waiting to be viewed and appreciated. It is all absolutely breath-taking and thankfully captured the brunette’s attention and rendered her speechless. Which was something Nicole believed to be impossible until now. Waverly is propped up against the window, staring into the wilderness. She looks content and at peace surrounded by nature in its rawest form. Nicole craves to be in a similar state of mind. She would give up everything right now if it meant she could silence the voices inside her head that are constantly feeding her with a narrative that she’s not good enough, that she is a failure. Yet again she feels a twinge of jealousy which is immediately replaced by guilt. Waverly is not responsible for all the shit that’s gone down on her. She’s been channeling her pain into anger and jealousy. She knows that moving forward she’d need to find ways to turn these emotions into something constructive and positive. ************************************************************** Waverly wakes up with a start. A bad dream perhaps, she cannot remember. She groggily looks around her cabin confused at first, until it strikes her. She is in the train. The stiffness in her body and slight ache in her neck tell her she had fallen asleep in her seat with her head leaning against the window at an awkward angle. Rolling her neck she stands up and stretches trying to loosen her stiff muscles. She notices they aren’t moving. The train had probably stopped to give way to a freight train. And rightly so, she could hear the faint rumbling of a train approaching from a distance. It was a full moon night and it was shining in all its glory throwing light on everything under it. She looked out the window and saw a sign that read Savant Lake. She knew the small station was located in the community of Savant Lake in Thunder Bay District in north-western Ontario. The rumbling of the freight train gets louder as it nears and she watches as it passes by, when all of a sudden she remembers the redheaded stranger. She must have left after Waverly fell asleep. What was her name again? Oh shoot..she slapped her palm on her forehead. She hadn’t even gotten her name. How silly of her. She makes a mental note to ask her when they meet next. There was definitely something up with that one, she ponders as she goes over their interaction or lack thereof, except for that one time she got mad, like really mad. She must admit, she was a tiny bit taken aback by the outburst, however, recovered quickly, knowing that something was definitely bothering the otherwise, seemingly kind and quiet woman. Waverly always tried to be of help to those around her. Always smiling and waving. Complimenting random strangers. That was her thing. And she was doing exactly that. Trying to help this brown eyed stranger who had looked like a lost and confused puppy. How would she know how to do that if she didn’t have all the details? She didn’t want to assume but it didn’t seem like this person was the kind who would ask for help willingly. Checking her phone for time she let out a long sigh. It was way past midnight. She was hungry as she had obviously missed her dinner reservation in the dining car. She would munch on some cookies she had in her backpack later. Deciding to change into something more comfortable than her jeans and crop top, she rummages through her backpack and finds what she was looking for. She quickly changes into sweats and a worn out comfy t-shirt. She pulls over her favorite green hoodie and slipping into her flip flops, gets out of her cabin to go look for an attendant so they could convert her seat into a bed. They weren’t on the move yet and the car door was open so people could step out for a quick smoke or get some fresh air. She could see that some of the passengers had taken advantage of this and were huddled in small groups smoking or simply chatting. On the way she passes by the redhead’s berth, noticing the door slightly ajar she halts in front of it. She hesitates for a bit but decides to check on her. Knocking once she waits for a response. Getting none she tries again. Nothing. She doesn’t want to intrude but she is curious and a wee bit worried maybe? Slowly pushing the door open she peers inside. The cabin is empty, though the bed looks like it’s been slept in. Maybe she stepped out, she deliberates. Forgetting all about finding the cabin attendant, she walks towards the exit and looks outside, carefully scanning the area in front of the station. The redhead is nowhere to be seen. For a moment she debates getting off the train. However her curiosity and worry gets the better of her. She steps outside and starts walking alongside the station in the opposite direction and away from the train. She notices a small grocery store (which is obviously closed) a few hundred meters away. There is a wooden bench outside and she can see someone sitting there with their back facing her. There is no mistaking the red hair which is bathing the moon light and shining like a red beacon. Mildly annoyed, and shivering a little from the cold wind, Waverly hurries towards her, glancing back every few seconds to make sure the train is still there. What was this woman even thinking? She wonders, rolling her eyes. She could so easily miss the train and get stranded in the middle of the wilderness. Slowing down she approaches the redhead who is completely unaware of her presence, lost in a world of her own. -“Hey stranger” Waverly calls out softly trying not to startle her. ************************************************************************* Nicole silently gets out of her seat, not wanting to disturb the sleeping brunette and steps out in to the corridor. As she is walking towards her cabin, she suddenly feels a wave of panic hit her. She’d been longing for some alone time and now that she is by herself she is starting to panic. She would never admit it but she’s afraid to be by herself. Does that even make any sense? Head full of all these conflicting emotions she enters her cabin. She looks over at the seats and winces. Although comfortable, she’s been sitting for too long and her back feel really stiff. She knows they can be converted into a bed. So after a few tries and failed attempts, she manages to fix herself a bed. Not bothering to take off her shoes or ever her blazer, she climbs in and lies down on her back with both hands under her head. Looking out the window and staring into crimson skies she reflects on all the events of her past. Neglected by workaholic parents, dumped by her girlfriend, being threatened with a lawsuit by her own mother, the list goes on. All of this has left her feeling hollow, unwanted and unloved and shaped her into the person she is today. She’d been living inside her head far too long and was afraid of being stuck there. Especially with all kinds of shit her mind’s been brewing lately. A chill runs down her spine every time she thinks about what could have happened at the Unions Station in Toronto. Yeah, she is definitely starting to feel self-aware. It’s gradual but it’s something. She has a lot of work cut out for her. She needs to focus on how she was going to get herself out of this funk. Her mind is still foggy and longs for clarity. She can only hope that this journey, wherever it may lead her, brings her some semblance of stability and maybe even peace. *************************************************************************** A good night’s sleep is a luxury that shouldn’t be taken for granted. Nicole hadn’t been sleeping well since the last few days. Today was no different and it wasn’t helping her situation. She’d been trying for last couple of hours without results. So when the train started to slow down and finally came to a stop, she knew she had to get out. She was also feeling a bit claustrophobic inside the tiny cabin and thought some fresh air would do her good. Besides, she had zero idea how she was going to survive the next 3-4 days on this train. She needed a plan in order to move forward and wasn’t sure being stuck on a train was a good start. She follows a few other passenger out the door and makes her way towards the station, if you could call it that. It was a tiny cabin with a lone employee. The sign on the roof reads Savant Lake. She knows it’s a fisherman's paradise with thousands of acres of water for world class fishing. It’s way past midnight. The moon is out and is surrounded by an unearthly glow. She could almost see all of its craters. The black sky providing a perfect backdrop for the bright and shining celestial body. It is quite windy and the cold breeze hitting her face sends shivers down her body. And in this moment she is very thankful for her three piece suit. She scans the surrounding area and notices a couple of wooden benches not far from the station. She slowly walks past the cabin, then through a small employee parking lot and upon reaching them, flops down on one. She is in a fix. She just couldn’t make up her mind. Should she continue west, take some time off to find herself and heal or return to Toronto? Pretend like nothing happened and just move on? If only the universe would be kind enough to send her a sign. ‘Please send me a sign, please send me a sign, please, please, please’ eyes shut tight she keeps repeating it like a mantra. She so focused she doesn’t realize someone’s standing behind her. “Hey stranger” she hears a familiar voice and jumps out of the bench with a start, turning around so fast she almost sprains her neck. -“oops” Waverly gives her a sheepish smile. “But really”? She continues her expression instantly changing to one of annoyance “What are you even doing here? What if you get stranded … huh?” she asks, both hands resting on her hips. Nicole doesn’t answer, simply stares at her. Her brain running million miles per hour. Could this be the sign she is looking for? Is the universe trying to tell her something? Should she be on that train? But what if she’s reading all of this wrong? God!!!! -“Seriously” Waverly is starting to get really pissed off now. “You’re not even going to answer?” Still nothing. What both of them don’t realize is that the train is already on the move, leaving them behind. -“What’s with that famous silence of yours”? She sounds frustrated now. “Fine don’t say anything” she says finally giving up. “But move your feet. You can do that right”? she snaps her fingers in front of Nicole’s face. “Come on, I’m freezing out here. Let’s get back on to the train”. The sudden movement of Waverly’s fingers brings her out of her daze. She looks over Waverly’s shoulder and watches as the train retreats in the distance. “Waverly” she whispers with urgency her eyes wide with panic and worry. -“What now”? She asks turning around herself to check what’s gotten the redhead in such a frazzled state all of a sudden. Now it’s her turn to go quiet. She dumbly stares at the gradually disappearing back end of the train, too shocked to move. The initial shock quickly turning into panic and then fury as she slowly turns around to face the person who in her mind is responsible for this absolutely balls of a situation. She’s so mad her whole body is vibrating with anger, her eyes turning into slits. She looks so terrifying, Nicole involuntarily takes a step back. -“You…. You …. You SHIT TICKET” she finally manages to say her voice trembling with anger. “What world are you even living in? I’ve missed my train because of you” she screams. “My luggage, my backpack. God even my phone. Everything is on that train” she almost on the verge of tears “and now I’m stuck here in the middle of nowhere in my night clothes and flip flops. All because of you” she looks at Nicole threateningly. -“Why would you leave the train in the first place”? Nicole asks in desperation, finally finding the courage to defend herself. She didn’t want to be annoyed with the girl in front of her, who really looked like she would burst out crying any second, but she was making it real hard not to. “Why do you always have to get yourself involved in matters that don’t concern you”? -“Wow, really”? Waverly is fuming now and Nicole is sure if she concentrates real hard she would be able to see steam coming out of her ears. “You’re unbelievable. You’ve really got the nerve to tell me that this all my fault while all I did was try and help you? And Instead of thanking me you’re just being plain ungrateful? How convenient”. -“Fine” Nicole was really trying to control herself here. “Thank you. Thank you very much for helping me out today. Now can you please leave me alone”? -“Leave you alone”? Her voice echoes in the dead of the night. She’s pointing her index finger at Nicole, moving it in a circular motion. “You think you can get rid of me that easy”? Then think again. I missed my train because of you, so you better make sure I get to Purgatory safely. You are going to take me home after we’ve figured out a way to get my luggage” She demanded. “Oh yeah!! I’m an Earp and I can make things difficult for you. Do not for a second doubt that. Oh no, Nicole didn’t doubt that. At all. Pinching the bridge of her nose, she realizes there’s no way she was going to win this argument against the feisty brunette. So she takes off. At full throttle.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
-“OH NO NO NO NO NO…. You did not just run away from me” Waverly is momentarily stunned and can only gape at running redhead. But once the shock has worn off she dashes after her as fast as her flip flops can take her. What she doesn’t apprehend is that while she was ranting and raging, Nicole was trying to come up with a plan to get her home safely. She struggles to keep up with the woman running in front of her, her feet constantly slipping out of her footwear. She sees the redhead stop in front of the railroad cabin and hastily go inside. Waverly makes it to the door huffing and trying to catch her breath before rushing in herself. She catches the redhead talking to a middle aged man. They seem to be having a serious discussion. -“Can somebody please tell me what’s happening”? She asks sounding desperate, anger taking a back seat for now. -“Hey, I was just talking to Greg here, explaining your situation? He is clocking out in a bit and is willing to drop us at the next station, Sioux Lookout” the redhead answers. “It should takes us around an hour and 30 minutes? She asks, directing the question towards Greg, who nods in agreement. -“The train makes a short stop there and you should be able to catch it easily” he adds. Nicole looks at Waverly anxiously, expecting her to explode any second. -“Oh thank goodness” she exclaims with relief. “What are we waiting for then? Come on let get going” ****************************************************** They were extremely fortunate to have found Greg just in time. If not for him they would be stranded in the wilderness for who knows how long. The drive was mostly uneventful and for most part silent. Greg filling in the silence from time to time, giving them an insight into the history of Savant Lake and Nicole and Waverly sitting in the back seat staring out their respective windows, humming their responses wherever necessary. Under different circumstances Waverly would have chewed Greg’s brains non-stop and asked a million questions, however she was too anxious and just wanted to make it to Sioux Lookout on time to catch the freaking train. Nicole was a bit apprehensive too, and was stealing quick glances at her every once in a while. After what seemed like ages, Greg finally pulls up at the side of Sioux lookout Station. Waverly thanks him profusely before turning to Nicole “Come on, we don’t want miss it again”. -“Why don’t you carry on, I’ll follow” Nicole answers with slight hesitation in her voice. -“Okay, I’ll see you in the train then. Bye Greg, and thanks again” she says as she opens the door. Jumping out she makes a run for the station. Nicole’s eyes follow the brunette until she disappears from view. She then turns to the kind man in the driver’s seat “How much do I owe you Greg”? She asks taking out her wallet. -“Oh please! Get out of here kid. You don’t owe me nothing” -“but…” -“No buts… now go find that girl of yours before she comes back out looking for you” he chuckles Nicole chokes on nothing but air and splutters “She… she’s not… not my girl” she manages to say in between coughs “We just met”. -“Oh sorry about that kid. You were so anxious and worried for her I just assumed” -“Don’t worry about it” -“You better get going then, if you want to catch that train” he laughs good naturedly. -“Thank you Greg. I really appreciate what you did for us” She thanks him as she gets out of the car. He waves at her and drives away. Standing all alone outside the station Nicole is in two minds. She looks at her wrist watch. It’s nearing 3am. Should she follow Waverly into the station and continue her Journey West or should she just stay back here and catch a flight back to Toronto? Sighing deeply, she finally makes up her mind, and slowly starts walking away from the station. She would look for a Hotel nearby, rest it out and then plan what to do next. She’s hardly taken a few steps, when she hears muffled footsteps approaching her accompanied by a voice she didn’t think she’d hear again. She turns around slowly only to be knocked a few paces backwards. Waverly has literally hurled herself into Nicole with her arms wound tightly around her neck. Nicole is so stunned she just stands still, her body stiff with awkwardness. ****************************************************************************** Huffing and panting Waverly approaches the Tudor-inspired station. She runs inside and on to the platform. The train hasn’t arrived yet and she finally breathes a sigh of relief. The station is practically empty. What could she expect at this hour anyway? She starts pacing back and forth trying to keep her anxiety at bay, cursing herself internally for getting off the train in the first place. She is so worked up she doesn’t realize someone’s come up to her from behind. Hey, can I help you”? She jumps with fright and turns around to come face to face with a young man in his mid-twenties. “Sorry I gave you a fright” he said in boring monotone voice and didn’t sound apologetic at all. “I’m Carl by the way, I work here. Is there anything I can help you with”. -“Oh my Gosh, yes, thank you so much. You see I was on board the Canadian and I missed it back at Savant Lake, because you know I was trying to help someone out. And I know it makes a short stop here. So yeah ..here I am… waiting” Waverly rambles her arms whirling in all directions. -“oh that’s bad then isn’t it? Coz you missed it. Again.” He now has an amused look on his face. -“Haha. You are funny” she laugh, but stops abruptly when the same is not returned by Carl. He is still looking her with amusement and curiosity. -“You are yanking my chain aren't you”? She asks panic mode coming on. -“Nope, sorry” he didn’t look sorry but definitely seemed to be enjoying seeing the brunette in distress. Waverly couldn’t believe this was happening to her. She ran her hands through her hair on the verge of tears. -“Hey relax alright. Let me see what I can do. Come on” He motions her to follow him to his desk. He takes down her details and feeds them into the computer. “Your final stop shows as Edmonton, yeah”? -“Yes” -“okay, let me see”. He says scanning the screen and typing some more. “Alright so the next stop is Winnipeg. You could take a car or a bus there. But I doubt you would make it in time to catch the train. You’ve already missed the overnight bus and the next one leaves at noon. It is also pretty much impossible to get a cab at this hour”. Waverly is on the verge of losing it. She however, musters all her courage and tries not to fall to pieces in front of a complete stranger. She doesn’t have the faintest idea what she was going to do. She had no cash, no phone and all her luggage was in the train. This was definitely not part of her plan. This was turning out to be exactly the opposite of what she had hope would happen. “Okay, could you please inform them what’s happened and let them know that I will be collecting my luggage from the Edmonton station”? How the hell was she going to make it to Edmonton? She would figure that out later. -“Sure I can do that” he assures her while typing away into his computer. “There it’s done. But you know, one can never be too careful while traveling solo. Do you have any place to go to for the night”? He asked trying hard not to sound too inquisitive. “I mean this town is pretty safe and people are great but you are a pretty girl” he gave her a wide toothy smile. Usually someone calling her pretty would definitely make her smile and blush. Coming from Carl however made her feel uncomfortable. “And pretty girls like you shouldn’t be walking around unknown places in the dead of the night” he continues seriously, leaning back in his chair trying his best to get a read on her. Waverly almost gags. -“You are most welcome to stay at mine” he offers. “I mean you can have the couch” he adds quickly. “Pretty girls need strong men to keep them safe. I can keep you safe” he says giving her a smug smile. Waverly has had enough. She has enough experience with such douche bags during her bar tending days at her Aunt’s bar in Purgatory. She could take care of herself. She only wishes she had her shotgun on her. -“Thank you Carl. But I think I can manage” she says giving him a fake smile. “Also this advice that you’ve been handing out, does it come with a price tag or is it free”? -“Of course it’s free” he answer not really catching on the sarcasm. -“Because I do not have any Loonies to throw at your stupid face” she shouts ignoring him. She’s so pissed off, he almost recoils in his seat and raises his hand in defense. With mixed feelings of anger, worry and desperation, she hurries towards the exit hoping stupid Carl will get the hint and leave her alone. -“Hey, wait up. Where would you even go at this odd hour? Come on. I am decent enough guy”. -“Crap” she curses. He is following her. She fastens her pace, cursing once again at her choice of footwear. She exits the station and is at a complete loss of where to go next. She quickly scans the area, knowing well Carl would catch up with her any second. That’s when she notices someone not far from the station. The redhead. She was still around. She’d never been this happy and relieved to see someone before and makes a run for it. "Hey wait up" She tries gaining her attention and mentally kicks herself for not asking the redhead her name. She sees her slowly turn around and before she knows it she has thrown her herself into woman’s arms hugging her so tight she’s knocked back a few paces. Saying Nicole is shocked is an understatement. She can hear Waverly muttering thank yous to the universe while she is frozen in place, eyes as wide as saucers trying to make sense of what’s happening. Waverly pulls back after a while and gives her the brightest smile she has ever seen. Nicole is fleetingly lost in it. Realizing she's been staring, she looks away quickly, hoping Waverly hadn't noticed, when something strikes her. “Did you miss the train? Again?” she asks totally flabbergasted, when all of a sudden catches someone in her peripheral vision. “And who is this joker? Has he been following you”? She asks concerned. Waverly can see Carl hovering in the distance, trying to catch her attention. However seeing that she isn't alone anymore he backs away and is gone. “Okay, let’s start over” Waverly cuts in totally ignoring Nicole’s questions. “Hi I’m Waverly” she beams, offering her, her hand. Nicole's eyes flit between Waverly's face and the outstretched hand before finally giving in “Nicole” she introduces herself for the first time taking the brunette’s hand in her own and giving it a firm but gentle shake.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
-“Nicole, I am so very pleased to meet you” Waverly chimes in with that sickeningly cheerful voice of hers. I’ve never in my life been so pleased to meet someone before. Because you are the one who’s responsible for all my problems” she continues without missing a beat but with same amount of cheerfulness. Nicole is left speechless and all she can do is stare at her open mouthed with an incredulous look on her face. To be honest she’s been doing that a lot in the presence of the hazel eyed woman. “Remember how we discussed you accompanying me to Purgatory, luggage and all” she continues, eyes narrow almost challenging Nicole to disagree. -‘More like you demanded’ Nicole thinks but doesn’t dare say it out loud. -“Don’t you for a second think I’ve forgotten about it. You are chaperoning me home and that’s that”. She says with a note of finality in her voice before laying out her plan with so much surety, like she’s been doing this for a while. “Now, we stay in a motel until the sun’s up. Then take the first available bus to Winnipeg, make our way to Edmonton, collect my stuff from the station and then all the way home to Purgatory” She finishes with a smug smile. And all Nicole can do is frown at the sheer smugness. -“Now come on. You can continue giving me those tough looks as we walk” she calls her out as she starts walking towards the direction of the town. Shaking her head with a mix of amusement and annoyance, Nicole follows her. ******************************************** As they slowly make their way through the quiet town, Waverly’s voice echoes throughout the dimly lit streets. Her chatter is non-stop. Like her life depends on it. She talks about everything and anything. And Nicole will outright deny it if ever asked, but Waverly is starting to grow on her. God she could be so annoying at times. However, her presence and maybe even her continuous blabbering helps her be present and more aware of her surroundings. And even though they’ve just met she can’t help but wish her well. She hopes Waverly never loses her positive outlook on life. -“I mean this is the heights. Like what does this even mean? Me roaming the streets of Sioux Lookout until wee hours of the morning” she huffs with amazement, like this was the craziest thing to happen to anyone let alone her. “Life is so strange right”? She asks, looking at Nicole, in a way that encourages her to take part in the conversation. -“You are enjoying this quite a bit aren’t you”? It’s supposed to be a question but sounds more like a statement given Nicole’s level of amusement. “Like we are here for a picnic or a holiday” She shakes her head but can’t help the smile that’s forming on her lips. “You know you are such a specimen. That boyfriend of yours should put you up on display at that museum he works for. And people should be charged a fee to see you” she tries to joke. -“oh so we are being funny now are we”? She fake gasps. “Also you’ve actually been listening” she states a hint of surprise in her voice. “And all this while I thought I was talking to myself” she smirks wriggling her eyebrows. Nicole face flushes and she averts eye contact, too embarrassed at being caught. She definitely hadn’t taken in everything Waverly had said. But did catch a few things here and there. And she definitely hadn’t meant to use them against the brunette. She was grateful Waverly had taken it lightly just like it was intended. ********************************************************** They are both exhausted. So as soon as they come across a motel, Waverly hurries towards it. Nicole is a bit skeptical and lags behind. It's a shabby looking two story building, with a huge neon sign on it’s roof that reads ‘Pussy Willows’. -“Come on.” Waverly motions Nicole to hurry up. Nicole hesitates but follows Waverly none the less. At the reception they are met by a young woman, whose make-up is so thick you could peel it off in strips, her boobs almost spilling out of her half-zipped leather jacket. -“Hey welcome to Pussy Willows, I’m Stephanie. How can I help you”? She greets them her curious eyes scanning them both head to toe. Waverly for once allows Nicole to take the lead. She is the one with the wallet after all. Leaning against the reception counter she gives Stephanie her signature smile and wave. -“We’d like to book a room for two” Nicole states, taking out her wallet not bothering with pleasantries. “How much do you charge for a day and do you accept credit cards”? -“Sorry it’s cash only” she answers giving Nicole her full attention. “You know you could also opt to pay by the hour” she suggests giving Nicole a dirty smirk and a side eye to Waverly. Waverly perks up at this completely oblivious to the look the receptionist is casting her way. Nicole glances at Waverly and can literally see the cogs turning in her head. “No thank you, I’ll pay for the whole day” Nicole blurts out in a hurry before Waverly can open her mouth to say something. -“Hey wait a minute” Waverly cuts in. “If we can pay by the hour then why not. It’s not like we’re going to spend the entire day here. A few hours tops right? How about four? Nicole opens and shuts her mouth a few times but she’s at a loss for words. -“Fine five then”? Waverly offers not waiting for the redhead’s answer. Nicole is all kinds of awkward and trying her best to get Waverly to stop talking “Listen, why don’t you let me do the talking here? You don’t get what she’s implying” she says in a quiet pleading voice. -“We’ll take the “pay by the hour” option” she addresses Stephanie directly ignoring Nicole’s pleas. “Five hours should be perfect, thank you”. -“Up the stairwell, room 204” She instructs placing a key card on top of the counter and Waverly makes a grab for it with a smug smile. Moving away from the reception area she makes her way to the stairs leaving Nicole to make the payment. Nicole pulls out a few bills from her wallet and hands them to Stephanie. As she is accepting the bills she leans forward, making a show of her plunging neckline. “She’s cute” she whispers nodding towards Waverly who is waiting for Nicole at the bottom of the stairwell. “Just in case you’re bored with cute and in a mood for hot and sexy you know where to find me” she winks and gives her a big flirtatious smile. A very flustered Nicole tries to string up a few words together “Look, mind your own beeswax, alright and keep the change” she turns around and hurries to join Waverly. ******************************************************* The room is average sized with a queen sized bed, a side table, a couch, a tiny desk with a chair, electric heating and an attached bathroom. There's a small window too that faces the main street. The room has a slight musty smell and Nicole walks across to open the window to let in some fresh air. Waverly flops down onto the couch with her arms folded tightly across her chest and legs crossed. “What were you two talking about out there”? She gives Nicole a ‘do not mess with me’ stare. -“You’re such a clown, do you know that” Nicole responds highly amused. Waverly could be so oblivious at times. She walks up to the desk and leans against it. -“Possibly. But I know self-defense” she says matter of factly. -“Oookay. But what’s your point here”? Nicole asks clearly confused. -“Just putting it out there” she replies “I’m also very good with a shot-gun and my sister can make you disappear without a trace”. -“Noted. But I still don’t get how all of this concerns me”. -“I just don’t want you getting any ideas. The fact that I hugged you outside the station and now sharing a room with you in this motel, doesn’t in any way indicate I’m even remotely interested in someone like you? -“What do you mean someone like me? Like as in gay”? It was now Nicole’s turn to frown. She didn’t take Waverly to be a homophobe. -“WHAT? NO!!! Why would you being gay be a problem”? Waverly tries to clear the miscommunication. “I might as well tell you I’m bisexual" She reveals with pride. I’m talking about all that flashing and whispering that was going on at the reception. Don’t think I didn’t notice the looks ‘Miss flashy bosoms” was giving you. You might be used to having girls falling all over you, and by all means you do you. I’m not judging here. Just making it clear that I don’t do casual and as you know I am already taken”. -“Let me be clear about something too” Nicole says defensively. “And I hope you’ll be happy know this, but I’m not into one-night stands either. I’m a one-woman woman” she claims proudly, pulling out a Polaroid from her wallet. It is a picture of Shae, taken at one of those photo booths at the mall. They had taken a bunch of pictures and she had asked Shae if she could keep one of hers. Shae had done the same. She had tried throwing it away. But couldn’t bring herself to do it. “Here have a look” she says holding it out for Waverly to see. Waverly leaps off the couch to get a closer look “Wow, she’s gorgeous” she compliments the woman in the picture. “You are one lucky woman” she gives Nicole a lopsided grin. Nicole knew it far from the truth. She took one last look at the picture before dropping it on the desk. “No, I’m not” she said feeling utterly miserable. “Wait a minute” Waverly intervenes as realization strikes her. “Is this what’s been bothering you all this while”? She asked even though she knows the answer. “She dumped you” it’s more of a statement than a question. -“More like life dumped me” Nicole replies as she sits on the edge of the bed, arms resting on her knees. She sounds so dejected, Waverly feels sorry for her. -“What do you mean”? She asks hoping Nicole would open up further. But she could already feel the walls being built up again. Nicole doesn’t answer, just silently stares at her hands. -“Oh Gosh!! The famous silence is back” Waverly quips, hoping it will cheer the redhead. “What’s with all the secrecy anyway? I mean you know almost everything about me, it’s only fair that I get to know a little something about you too” She huffs in frustration. Nicole remains silent. She’s not ready to share her story, not yet. “Fine. Be a Grinch. And it’s not even Christmas yet” Waverly mutters under her breadth heading to the bathroom, leaving Nicole to pine over lost love. ************************************************** The sound of traffic and honking forces Waverly out of her slumber. “Shut up” she groans trying to cover her ears with a pillow. But it’s of no use. Sitting up in bed she leans against the headboard. The sun is already up and the room is filled with natural light. Rubbing her groggy eyes she looks around and finds Nicole lying on the couch her eyes focused on the ceiling. She’s too tall for the couch and her legs are spilling over armrest. She’s gotten rid of her suit which is now hanging on the chair. Her once crispy white shirt is a bit ruffled up and the sleeves are rolled up to her elbows. The waist coat is still on, however it is unbuttoned. Waverly must admit that she does look good. She has a boyfriend but doesn’t mean she can’t appreciate beauty when she sees it. But she feels like a creep ogling at the miserable looking woman. There’s so much pain and sadness reflecting from those chocolaty brown eyes, Waverly’s can’t help feel heartbroken. -“Hey” Waverly greets her softly trying to get her attention without startling her. -“Hey” Nicole responds but doesn’t bother moving from her current position. -“How long do we have until we check out”? Waverly asks in the hopes of getting the redhead to talk. -“Another thirty minutes maybe”? She replies with a shrug. Okay Waverly had had enough. She knew exactly how to get this sad puppy of human out of her funk.Climbing out of the bed she goes over to the desk and picks up the photograph that Nicole had dropped earlier. -“Come on sit up” she orders Nicole who finally looks her way with a frown. -“What is it now Waverly? She asks, not in a mood for any more talks. -“Make some room for me” she insists. Nicole sighs and reluctantly slides her legs back to the ground and sits up. Waverly flops down beside her and hands her the picture “Tear it up” she instructs her firmly -“What”? _”Look, she’s the woman who ditched you right? Then what’s the problem, tear it up” she doesn’t back down -“Come on Waverly, you can’t be serious” She says feeling ridiculous. -“I am damn serious. Now tear it up”. -“This is so immature” Nicole groans-“Of course it’s immature. All the more reason to do it. Trust me you’ll feel so much better after” Waverly encourages her. “Come on just tear up the shit ticket. You won’t regret it”. Nicole looks doubtful “I’m so going to regret this” she says blowing out a raspberry psyching herself up to tear the photograph. -“You can do it Nicole. Tear her up into a million pieces” And Nicole did. She slowly tore the photograph into as many pieces as she could. -“Now go to the bathroom and flush her out.” Nicole didn’t see the point in arguing. She had long deduced that she couldn’t win against this feisty brunette. So she gets off the couch, drags herself to the bathroom and dumps the pieces into the toilet before pushing the flush button. She watches the pieces disappear and it’s like watching all of the memories she had hidden deep inside her heart fade into nothing. A sudden waver of relief washes over her. It feels like a huge weight has been lifted off of her shoulders. This photo was a representation of her relationship with Shae. And even though it had ended, it had continued to cause her pain. Now that the photograph doesn’t exist, she no longer feels the need to cling on to the past. She cannot believe that such a childish and immature act can bring her so much relief and a sense of freedom.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
As Nicole exits the bathroom she can’t help but give Waverly a huge smile. Her first real smile in a long long while. Dimples and all.“Sooo, how do you feel”? Waverly asks brimming with anticipation while simultaneously trying hard not to stare at those dented cheeks.“You know what? I feel good, great even” Nicole beams at her. “You were right. It definitely helped”.-“See, I told you” she replies with a smug smile. “And can I be honest with you”? She asks, her eyes roaming over Nicole’s body. “You are very attractive”This out of the blue compliment throws her off completely. She blushes and can feel the warmth of the blush as it crawls up her neck. Biting her lower lip, she looks away not knowing how to respond. Her reaction is not lost on Waverly “What? I have eyes. Anyway, as I was saying, you are beautiful, you seem to have a great sense of style. You’re helpful and considerate. All in all a decent human. Which means you will have no problems finding love again. And she’ll be much better than that one there” she says pointing to the bathroom.-“Thank you that’s very kind of you” Nicole finally manages to say giving her a shy smile.-“Just stating facts" She replies with a shrug. “And what do you know, maybe if I wasn’t in a relationship already, I might have fallen for you too. MIGHT being the key word here. But can you imagine that”? She has a look of wonder in her eyes, like the possibility of this ever happening is farfetched.Nicole can’t help but chuckle at the shorter woman’s antics. “You like yourself a lot, don’t you”? She asks, but her voice doesn’t hold a mocking tone to it.Waverly is used to people judging her, but is surprised to find soft brown eyes looking at her with mix of curiosity and amazement instead. “A lot” she responds with and air of self-assurance. "I AM MY FAVORITE”This carefree, unbridled declaration of self-love hits Nicole hard. Her gaze mellows down further as she losses herself into sparkly hazel eyes that are bristled with a hunger for life and all that it has to offer.-“Hey, where’d you go? I lost you there for a second” Waverly asks a little concerned.“I wish I was more like you” She responds looking away, feeling vulnerable.-“Well, good luck with that because it’s not that easy” she teases. “Now, what should be easy, is finding yourself a new girlfriend”-“If it seems that easy then why don’t you help me find one”? Nicole teases back and Waverly squeals with excitement.-“Really? Oh this is going to be so much fun” she exclaims and Nicole can see her eyes glaze over, undoubtedly thinking of all the girls she could set Nicole up with.-“Alright let’s try something okay? Look at me”. She orders and Nicole gives her a puzzled look. “I mean do you like what you see”? She asks, fingers pointing at herself, doing a little shimmy.Nicole brain short circuits. Her breadth hitches in her throat and her mouth suddenly feels dry. She visibly gulps and tries to focus on everything else around the room but Waverly. No doubt Waverly is beautiful. In fact she is the most beautiful girl Nicole had ever met. Then again, she hadn’t been in a good place earlier, to acknowledge that. Not that she has a chance or anything. Waverly already has a special someone in her life and will probably be married soon. But that doesn’t stop her from panicking like the useless gay that she is.-“I’m not answering that” she finally manages to say, still not meeting Waverly’s eyes and hoping she hadn’t noticed what a flustering mess she’d turned into.-“I can’t believe you're this shy”-“I… I’m not” Nicole stutters, defending herself-“Then answer the damn question. I’m only asking you to look, not undress me” She rolls her eyes in mock annoyance. She was clearly enjoying watching a flustered redhead trying to string up a few sentences and fail. Before either of them can say anything further, they hear a sharp knock on the door, interrupting their banter. Nicole is slightly disappointed but also relieved. She was this close to making a fool of herself in front to Waverly. She opens the door and finds Stephanie on the other side giving her what Nicole assumes to be a flirty smile. Honestly it doesn’t work for her at all.-“Your five hours are up” she says her eyes ravenously roaming Nicole’s body.-“We are just about leaving. Thank you.” Nicole says as she shuts the door not wanting to engage any further with the receptionist. *************************************** Once they leave the Motel, they make their way to the bus depot and purchase tickets to Winnipeg via Dryden. That was the fastest route available. They have a couple of hours until their bus departs so they decide to grab something to eat at a nearby café. Nicole gets herself a bacon sandwich and coffee while Waverly orders a falafel wrap and herbal tea. They eat in silence as they are both starving, not having eaten since they left their respective homes.Bellies full they make their way back to the bus station and board the bus to Dryden. It would take them around an hour and a half to get there. Dryden to Winnipeg though would be a long five hour drive.Nicole lets Waverly have the window seat and drops down on the seat beside her, their last conversation playing on her mind. On loop. “So, you were kind of asking me something back at the motel before we were interrupted” she asks trying her best to sound casual.-“of course” she gets all excited and shifts slightly in her seat to face Nicole. “Alright, what do you think of me? Like do you think I’m beautiful, hot, sexy? What I mean is had we met under different circumstances would you like me, ask me out on a date maybe”?Nicole pretended to ponder over this before replying. “Yeah sure” she shruggs nonchalantly trying to calm the butterflies that are fluttering in her stomach.-“Excellent!!! Because if you like me, then you’re definitely going to like my sister. Wynonna. She’s six years older, tall……..not as tall as you. She’s beautiful with hair like a mare with a Hollywood stylist. She loves her whiskey but loves me more. And her bark’s worse than her bite”.-“Wow!! That’s a lot”.-“Wait there’s more” Waverly cuts in. “I have a niece. She’s adorable and you’re going to love her. Eeeeeeeee I can’t wait for you to meet them”. She squeals. And all Nicole can do is give her an affectionate smile despite how absurd all of this sounds. The rest of their journey to Dryden is filled with Waverly’s stories about her home town and family. Nicole also learns that Waverly holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Ancient History and Language and isn’t surprised to know that Waverly is fluent in dead language like Latin, Ancient Sumerian and Sanskrit. The more she learns the more she is in awe of this beautiful, smart, kind, firecracker of a woman sitting beside her.Once in Dryden they don’t have to wait long to board the next bus to Winnipeg. The Drive is a long one and exhaustion finally takes over. Unable to hold on any longer they both fall asleep their heads resting against each other. ******************************* The bus arrives at the Balmoral Bus Station in Winnipeg. They get off and hail a cab from the street and head towards the Union Train Station. They wanted to check if there were any trains running to Edmonton that they could hop on. Unfortunately the services depart only twice a week and the next train available leaves after 2 days.Waverly was also concerned about her luggage and just wanted to make sure her request to collect it in Edmonton had been accepted. After the incident at the Sioux Lookout Station, she wasn’t sure Carl had actually updated the system and didn’t want to take any chances. As it turned out he had. So all of that sorted out they left the Station and Waverly could finally breathe easy. The local time was half past four and Nicole made sure to adjust the time on her wrist watch. Her phone long dead was sitting in her trouser pocket. She hadn’t bothered charging it and didn’t intend on doing so for a while.-“Should we go back to the bus Station and check the bus schedule”? Asks Waverly-“Actually I was thinking we could rent a car” Nicole suggests-“I can’t ask you to do that”.-“You didn’t. I'm offering”-“But Nicole, renting a car is going to be so expensive” Waverly was not having it. “I already have to pay you for the bus fare and the motel. I’m not really sure I can afford this. Plus it’s going to be a long drive. Fourteen hours at least. And I won’t be able to drive. All my documents are on the train” she rambles clearly panicking.-“Hey hey…. stop there for second. Breathe” Nicole tries to calm her down with her soothing voice.-“But Nicole…..” she tries again before Nicole cuts her off.-“Waverly you don’t have to pay me anything. I mean I feel bad that I kind of ruined this trip that you were so looking forward to and it’s only fair that I bear the expenses and try in my own little way to make this journey as comfortable as I can for you. So please let me do this” she said her puppy dog eyes looking at her with anticipation.Waverly is a little taken aback by her generosity. Nobody has ever done something like this for her ever. But she is grateful nonetheless.-“Wait a minute” she says sounding like her cheerful bubbly self again. Cheerful bubbly Waverly is Nicole’s favorite. “You’re not some spoilt rich kid are you”? She jokes.Nicole playfully rolls her eyes and huffs out a laugh but chooses not to say anything. She wants so badly to tell Waverly who she is, but the fear of rejection is holding her back. Deep down she knows Waverly wouldn’t do that, wouldn’t judge her, but too many supposedly important people in her life have disappointed her. She’d been given a lot of media coverage since joining her father’s company. Lots of articles were written about the “Haught Heir” and her potential to carry on her father’s legacy. It had definitely boosted her confidence. But then shit happened. Her mother’s affair with one of their business associates was splattered all over the media. The scandal had nearly destroyed their reputation within the business world. Her parents were getting separated and unknown to her at the time, the only person who she thought was her anchor, who was keeping her grounded, was about to dump her. And before she knew it her life and career were on a downward spiral. It only got worse after her father’s sudden death. Even though they weren’t close, she looked up to him and hoped that one day he would see her, like really see her and be proud of her. But now she would never know. The last blow though came from Shae. Her rejection had completely destroyed Nicole. But Waverly had saved her without even knowing it. And now here she was, on an unplanned journey towards healing and self-discovery.-“Hey where’d you go”?Nicole hadn’t realized the thoughts and emotions that were running through her head were playing out on her face for Waverly to see. She quickly schools her expression. “I’m here, just thinking how badly I need a change of clothes. And you do too”-“And food. I’m hungry” Waverly pouts.-“Come on then, let go explore the city”. ****************************** This would be Nicole’s second time visiting Winnipeg. First being during her days in college when she and a couple of friends had set out on summer road trip. Considered the heart of central Canada this capital city of Manitoba holds its own against Canada's bigger cities as a thriving center of arts, dance, and music. She’s glad she got to do this again and wants to make sure Waverly has a good time too.She had noticed a car rental shop on their way to the Union Station earlier. Once there she completes all the formalities, makes the payments and leaves the car rental office with a key to a metallic silver, 4-door Jeep Gladiator Rubicon. She drives them to their next stop which is the Forks Market. It is a historic site and one of Winnipeg's most popular attractions located at a point where the Red and Assiniboine Rivers meet. It is basically a place for celebrations and recreation. It comprises of an interpretive park, revitalized historic and new buildings containing shops and restaurants, as well as museums, a skateboard park and historic port. She hopes Waverly will enjoy exploring the some of the popular tourist attraction with her.The look of child-like wonder on Waverly’s face on entering the Market is priceless. She literally drags Nicole behind her, her eyes moving in all directions unable to make up her mind. They decide on shopping for some clothes first. Waverly insists they visit the thrift stores. Nicole is a bit unsure but is pleasantly surprised to find some really cool t-shirts, a denim jacket and a couple of jeans for herself. Waverly manages to find some amazing vintage gems too. They freshen up and change into their newly purchased clothing at the public washroom on site.Waverly looks beautiful in her orange and cream tied sleeve vintage crop top. Her tight high wasted jeans enhances her curves and leaves nothing to imagination. Nicole tries hard to keep her eyes focused on Waverly’s face and not let them drift to the sliver of skin that is visible between her crop top and jeans.-Thanks you so much Nicole. Not only for the clothes but for everything else.” She gives Nicole a grateful smile.-“You’re welcome. It’s nothing really.” She replies with a shy smile. “You look great by the way” she adds, unable to stop herself. “Vintage really suits you”.-“You don’t look too bad yourself” Waverly gives her a wide smile.Nicole blushes at the compliment, her hand going up to rub the back of her neck. A habit she had developed as a child whenever she felt shy or nervous. She did feel very comfortable in her charcoal grey ACDC t-shirt and jeans. The denim jacket was one size too big but she didn’t mind.Feeling clean and all dressed up they wander around the market for a while. After a bit of site seeing they both feel it’s time to start their long drive to Edmonton. They pick up some food to-go and head towards the Jeep. ******************************* The sun hadn’t set yet. The waters of Lake Winnipeg lay serene and untroubled bringing a sense of calm that Nicole hadn’t felt in a while. They had made a quick stop near the lake to eat the food they’d grabbed earlier. Then on a whim decided to go for a short walk along its shores and were now silently sitting on a small wooden fishing dock, their legs hanging in the water staring into the horizon. She was softly singing one of favorite songs, lost in the magnificent view in front of her, completely unaware of the look on wonderment Waverly was throwing her way.-“Wow! Where did that come from”?The sound of Waverly’s voice brings her out of her reverie. “What”? She asks puzzled.-“You were singing” she points out when she sees Nicole’s puzzled face. “Gosh you’re such a dork” she laughs.Nicole feels her face flush. Her hand once again reaches the back of her neck, rubbing it slowly. The action isn't missed by Waverly.Nicole didn’t normally sing in front of people, at least not anymore. Her parents hadn’t encouraged it. Her father had repeatedly told her she wasn’t good at it and even threatened to disown her if she took up anything other than business studies. It had left her feeling self-conscious.-“You have an amazing voice Nicole. You should sing more often” Waverly compliments her, not just because she could sense her discomfort but also because it was true. Nicole's first instinct is to shrug off the compliment. But when she turns to face Waverly, she sees nothing but sincerity in those hazel eyes. And she knows Waverly meant it.-“Thanks” she replies with a sweet smile.-“Seriously you should have been a singer” Waverly nudges her with her shoulder.-“People don’t always get what they want” she replies sadly-“Not true” Waverly disagrees. “I personally feel, if we really want something, like for REAL, the universe makes it happen.”-“You know there was a time I wanted pursue music. Like really wanted to. But…”-“You sound like you’re going to drop dead tomorrow” Waverly cuts in.Nicole huffs out a laugh “Not dying but that ship has long sailed”.-“But why”? Waverly asks adamantly. “Give me one good reason why”Nicole doesn’t answer, just turns to face the lake again.-“Fine don’t tell me” Waverly pouts.-“Have you heard of Nicholas Haught”? Nicole asks, chewing on her lower lip.Waverly though surprised by the sudden change of topic, racks her brains, when it suddenly clicks. ”As in the business magnate Nicholas Haught, who died recently”?-“HmmHmm” Nicole hums.-“What about him”?-“He was my father” She mumbles releasing a shaky breadth she didn’t know she was holding.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Waverly’s Jaw drops to the floor and she gapes at Nicole her mouth hanging open “You are …..Nicole Haught” she states, the shock clearly evident in her voice.-“Yup” Nicole confirms popping the p. “Now you know me” she smiles coolly but to be honest she is nervous. At the rate her is currently beating it’s almost ready to jump out of her chest.-“You are THE HAUGHT” Waverly repeats in awe, still trying to process the information. “So that was your mother who took off with one of her business associates”? She asks, before she can stop herself and immediately regrets it. “Shit, I’m sorry” she tries apologizing, mortified by her own words. If ‘truth hurts’ had a face, that would be Nicole Haught right now. Waverly’s words sting but she can no longer run from the truth.-“Yes, that was my mother who had an affair with one our business associates” she says impassively.-“Nicole, I was just quoting the newspapers, and while that is not an excuse I would still like to apologize. I really really am sorry”-“It is what it is Waverly and I might as well get used to hearing it. Can’t keep running away from it forever can I”? She says a mixture of hurt and anger playing on her face. “You don’t have to apologize not when my mother is a selfish, cheating asshole.“Woah there. No need to be so disrespectful” Waverly chides her. “Look I know it’s not my place to say anything here, but just cut her some slack okay”.“Why would I do that? She’s a cheater Waverly. That’s an absolute no in my book” She shoots back with frustration.-“Nicole she was in love” Waverly says like it was the most obvious thing in the world.Nicole cannot believe what she’s hearing “Love? Are you even serious right now” she says clearly pissed off.-“I understand it’s not easy to imagine our parents doing something like that, but everything’s fair in love.”-“Are you even listening to yourself? All this bullshit you’re talking about happens only in books and movies. This is real life Waverly. With real people and real feelings. What would you know anyway” Nicole doesn’t want to sound rude but she’s really upset.Waverly doesn’t respond immediately and there’s an uncomfortable silence between them.“My mama left when I was four. So yeah, I might kinda know a little about that” she says with smidge of hurt in her voice.Nicole is taken aback by this revelation “I’m so sorry Waverly. I didn’t know” she apologizes feeling embarrassed by what she’d said earlier. She’s stunned by how similar their stories are.-“How would you know silly. I just told you” Waverly says trying to lighten the mood before continuing. “My father was a shitty husband and an even shittier dad. He was an abusive drunk and took it out on all of us. Mama couldn’t take it anymore. So she up and left with someone who treated her well and more importantly loved her. Daddy died two years later. Drunk driving”. Her voice is void of any emotion. For all you know she could have been reciting the shopping list.Nicole just stares at her, eyes soft, once again amazed by her resilience.-“How do you do it? Be positive and see the good in people all the time”?-“It wasn’t easy. And it definitely didn’t happen overnight” she says honestly.“I was too young to understand everything that was happening. I missed my mother terribly. I couldn’t comprehend why she left us with our abusive father. For a long time I believed that maybe it was my fault, that maybe I wasn’t good enough. But then my aunt and uncle took us in after daddy died. And that’s when things started to get better. We were loved, and cared for and spoilt. Wynonna had a bit of a rough start. She was older and was affected far more than I was. But eventually she came around too”.Nicole was hanging onto every word, afraid to breathe in case she missed out on anything.“I don’t blame Mama anymore though” Waverly continues “Because I realized that sometimes you just have to put yourself first. And that’s not being selfish, but simply being kind to yourself and that’s exactly what I did. Life is short Nicole and uncertain but it is also long and lonely. That’s why it’s important we surround ourselves with people that will support us, tolerate us, elevate us and especially love us”.-"You're so strong Waverly and you've been through so much" She says her voice small. "And look at me, I'm such a mess, pining over some girl, who probably didn't even deserve me" that last part sounding a bit uncertain.-"Hey don't do that. You've got to stop beating yourself up" Waverly reprimands her, but with affection. "This isn't some competition and no trauma is 'worse' than another. Besides heartbreak can be life altering"Nicole simply nods, Waverly's words ringing inside her head “You are amazing you know that”? She says with so much sincerity Waverly does a double take, a slight blush tinting her face.“I know” she replies giving her a mischievous smile.“Of course you do” Nicole chuckles but it doesn’t reach her eyes. They are dim and still have traces of sadness in them.Waverly wants to change that “But you know what’s even more amazing?” she asks Nicole wriggling her eyebrows.Nicole looks at her questioningly.-“The water” she says splashing her hanging legs in the cool waters of the lake. “Have you ever swam in a lake before”? She gives her an innocent smile.Nicole’s gloom-ridden eyes in an instant turn wide with panic as realization sets in‘Mission accomplished’ Waverly thinks proudly. Not completely but half way there.-“Waverly, I think we should get going” Nicole says hastily, panic obvious in her voice.-“I think we should try it” she says confidently holding on to Nicole’s arm who is trying to get herself up from her current position at the edge of the dock. “It’s going to be so much fun” she squeals her eyes twinkling.“Waverly” Nicole warns and that was the last thing she says before hitting the water with a loud splash. Waverly had jumped in pulling her along. They both scream, one with pure elation and other with fear.Nicole isn’t a strong swimmer. With her eyes shut tight she splutters and gasps, trying to catch her breath. However, soon realizes that her feet are actually touching the bed of the lake and the water is only chest deep. Shivering a little she steadies herself and lets out a shaky breath of relief, trying to enjoy the feeling of the cool water lapping gently against her skin. Her t-shirt and jeans completely soaked. Thankfully her jacket was safe in the Jeep. She can hear Waverly giggling and squealing in the background. Opening her eyes she plots her revenge and starts splashing her with water. The squeals and giggles turn into laughter. Waverly shows her no mercy as she splashes her in return. Nicole can’t remember the last time she’s done something so silly and if she could be really honest she is kinda having fun. Waverly’s laugh is infectious and she knows she will never get bored of that sound. Exhausted but happy they both climb on to the dock and start walking back to their Jeep.-“God Waverly! You’re insufferable” She says with mock annoyance, shivering a little as the cool evening breeze hits her wet skin.“But you like me” she says in a quivering voice clearly feeling the chill herself. “You said so yourself. So no take backs”-“Has anyone ever told you that you’re completely nuts”?-“All the time”Nicole rolls her eyes playfully at the comeback but can’t help give her a grateful smile.Upon reaching the Jeep they take turns changing inside the car thankful for the newly purchased clothes earlier that day.-"Gosh I was right. You are a spoilt rich kid" Waverly teases as Nicole gets into the driver’s seat and starts the engine.Nicole lets out a loud laugh and Waverly is pleased to see that it finally lights up her eyes. They continue their friendly banter as Nicole drives them into the sunset towards Saskatchewan.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
By the time they reach Brandon, a nice little city couple of hours from Winnipeg, the sun is already down. They stop for fuel and decide to put up in a motel for the night as driving west during dusk could be unsafe. After a good night’s sleep and breakfast to go at a local café, they set off towards Saskatchewan the following morning. There is nothing boring about driving across the outstretched Canadian Prairies. The never-ending blue skies, sun light streaming through the mountains, the greens and golds of the ripening crops, brings on a sense of calm and peace that could only be experienced in the midst of nature. Nicole takes the opportunity to reflect on all the past events that had ultimately led to her sitting in the driver’s seat of this Jeep, with the most amazing woman sitting beside her. As usual Waverly has a lot to say and Nicole patiently takes in every word giving her all her attention. ************************* After almost 15 hours on the road, multiple stops for fuel, food and rest, they finally make it to Edmonton, Alberta. Making a quick stop at the train station they collect Waverly’s luggage including her backpack containing her wallet, laptop and phone. They load the luggage in the back of the Jeep and Waverly demands she drives the rest of the way home and Nicole lets her with a grateful smile. After another three hours’ drive they enter Calgary. Waverly’s eyes are shining brighter than usual. If that could even be possible. The familiar sites of the towering Rocky Mountains, glacial lakes, vast boreal forest, rolling foothills and productive prairies remind her just how much she’s missed her home and family. They soon pass a “Welcome to Purgatory” sign and as expected the route is scenic with a mix of horseback trail rides, guest and working ranches, historic sites and rodeos. Nicole is fascinated. She can see Waverly’s whole body brimming with excitement and can only imagine how happy the brunette is to be home, given how fondly she’s been talking about her family ever since they’ve met. Although sad that her time with Waverly is coming to an end she is glad that Waverly will be home with her family who obviously love and adore her immensely. As they pass through the small picturesque town they are welcomed by its old Western charm. Waverly excitedly points out all the attractions for Nicole to see, including Purgatory High and Shorty’s the family owned bar that was jointly run by her Aunt and Uncle and their friend Shorty. She remembers Waverly telling her that her childhood home or Homestead as she calls it, is on the outskirts of Purgatory, well away from where majority of the population resides. It’s been in the family for generations and they lived there until their father’s death, after which they had gone on to live with their Aunt Gus and Uncle Curtis, at their ranch home, closer to town. She had moved back a few years ago though when a very pregnant Wynonna had showed up in town, for good this time, after a long stay overseas. She had convinced Waverly to move in with her and they had tried their best to fix it and make it a home. *********************** “Wow” Waverly hears Nicole gasp as they drive up a dirt road and pass through a tall wooden gate with a sign over it which reads “EARP”. She pulls up close to the house and parks besides an old beat-up blue and white pick-up truck.Waverly isn’t sure what to make of Nicole’s reaction and is suddenly aware of how humble her wooden, shabby looking house would seem compared to what Nicole might be used to living in. “It’s not much” she says as she shuts off the engine and nibbles nervously on her lower lip waiting for Nicole’s answer.Nicole seems to sense her nerves “It’s perfect” She answers openly not to pacify her but because she truly is in awe of the site in front of her. The modest looking home with a wrap-around porch is situated on the banks of a small lake and surrounded by thick pine forests. The Canadian Rockies loom over it providing a picturesque backdrop.-“Do you think there are any properties on sale out here. We could be neighbors you know”? She asks taking in the beautiful view in front of her.Waverly barks out a laugh but stops as soon as she sees the serious expression on Nicole’s face “You are serious aren't you”?-“of course, this seems like an amazing place for a holiday home”-“I have a better idea”-“Noooo” Nicole groans-“Don’t be so dramatic” Waverly rolls her eyes. “Just hear me out”.-“Go on then enlighten me”-“Marry my sister and move into the Earp Homestead. It’s a win win”-“Hmmmm” Nicole pretends to be think. “You know what? I have a better idea. Why don’t we get married? The offer would still stand true right? Plus we already know each. We are friends now”. She says with a cockiness that’s new to Waverly.-“But you see there’s a flaw in this plan. I’m with Perry and I will be marrying him soon. Sorry” she says playfully swatting her arm “And stop flirting with me while I'm trying to set you up with my sister”. Nicole is about to respond when they hear the front door opening. A leather jacket clad woman walks steps out onto the porch followed by a little girl of maybe five. There’s a frown on the woman’s face and Nicole immediately knows this woman has to be Wynonna. She is exactly how Waverly described her, beautiful with flawless hair and an overall badass vibe. Nope! definitely not her type.-“Waverly, I think it’s time to say goodbye” she says with a small smile trying to keep her voice as neutral as possible, struggling to keep the sadness at bay that’s slowly crawling back into her heart.-“What? No. You have to come in and meet everyone. Looks like my aunt and uncle are here too” She says pointing to another newer truck parked out in front of the barn a few meters away from the main house.-“But…”-“No buts. It’s been a tiring couple of days and you deserve rest. Come on” Waverly insists.Left with no other choice and honestly unable to say no to Waverly, she opens the passenger side door and jumps out, no doubt happy to be spending some more time with her. Waverly does the same on the other side. An older couple has now joined Wynonna and Alice on the porch. As soon as Waverly steps out the little girl, Alice, runs down the porch steps and straight into Waverly’s arms. “Auntie Wavy” she yells in delight as Waverly lifts her up and peppers her face with kisses. “Hello my love, I missed you so much”. They all take turn hugging Waverly and exchanging pleasantries while eyeing Nicole curiously who is lagging behind a little awkward and unsure. **************************** -“So Nicole, Waverly tells us that’s you went out of your way to help her get home after she missed the train. That was awfully kind of you and we are all very grateful.”? Curtis thanks her with a grateful smile. They are all sitting at the dinner table enjoying a scrumptious dinner of roast chicken and veggies and a special vegan veggie stew for Waverly.Waverly’s aunt and uncle are lovely and have been very welcoming. Wynonna on the other hand seems standoffish and has been eyeing her suspiciously while also catching up with her baby sister. Alice is another story all together. She is totally smitten and had insisted she sit next to her. A little shy at first she had mustered the courage to ask Nicole if her hair was real and if she could touch it. Of course Nicole had let her and they were best friends since.-“Absolutely, thank you Nicole” Gus agrees-“oh it was nothing really Mr and Mrs McCready” she says brushing it off not wanting any more attention to herself-“Please none of that Mr and Mrs business, it’s Gus and Curtis for you” Gus says sternly and Nicole gives her a hasty nod. ”And of course it’s not nothing. Waverly means the world to us and we are really grateful you were there to help her out even when you didn’t have to”.Nicole gives her a shy smile as she continues eating.-“Tell us something about yourself Nicole. What do you do”? – Inquires Curtis-“Oh, I’m a musician” she says hastily. She hates lying and groans internally but she’s not yet ready for all the questions that will follow if she reveals her true identity. She looks over at Waverly who is giving her an amused smile and the look on Wynonna face says she can see right through her bullshit. But thankfully both the sisters keep their mouth shut and Nicole can breathe easy.Dinner done Nicole finds herself seated on the living room couch besides Alice watching The Little Mermaid. Alice’s favorite movie.Wynonna has retreated to her room and Gus and Curtis have said their goodbyes and are having a private conversation with Waverly out on the front porch.Nicole hasn’t really been around kids Alice’s age but is genuinely enjoying her company. Alice is sweet kid with a huge heart that reminds her of Waverly.-“Hey, we need to talk” Waverly suddenly appears out of nowhere making Nicole jump.-“Girl!! Wear a bell or something” she breathes out holding her hand against her chest but is soon overcome with concern by the anxious look on Waverly’s face.-“Alice sweetie, it’s way past your bed time. Would you be a good girl and go up to your bedroom”? Waverly coos in that sweet sugary voice of hers.-“But we are watching a movie Aunt Wavy” Alice protests.-“Baby girl, Nicole is staying with us for a couple of days and you guys can continue where you left off tomorrow. Right Nicole”?-“Yeah sure” Nicole confirms giving Alice a sweet smile.-“Alright, see you tomorrow Nicole” she smiles after giving it a thought. “Good night Aunt Wavy. Good night Nicole”-“Good night” they both answer in unison as Alice runs up the stairs to her bedroom “I’ll be up there in a few to read you a story” Waverly yells after her flopping down on the couch besides Nicole.-”Hey is everything Okay? Did something happen with your aunt and uncle”?But before Waverly can answer Wynonna walks in eyeing them suspiciously. “What’s happening here”?-“What do you mean Wynonna”? Waverly asked rolling her eyes. “Me and Nicole were just talking. Speaking of which, why are you so quiet today?-“Did Gus and Curtis speak to you”? She asks ignoring Waverly’s questions.-“Yes they did but I don’t want to talk about it. At least not right now” Waverly huffs with a tone of finality in her voice. “But what I would like to talk about is Nicole here” she says pointing towards Nicole who looks like a deer caught in a headlight. “I want you two to go on a date” she commands with a bright smile her eyes crinkling into half moons.Wynonna lets out a cackle while Nicole seems more interested in her shoes then the two woman standing in front of her, a blush slowly creeping up her face.-“You know I don’t swing that way baby girl” she smirks at Nicole who had dared to look up for a second immediately regretting it. “And even if I did, carrot top here wouldn’t be able to handle all of this” she says pointing to herself and swaying her hips.-“Be nice Nonna” Waverly chides. “What about all those .. all those stories you told me .. About when you were in Greece”? She asks clearly disappointed. Nicole however sighs in relief.-“What happens in Greece stays in Greece baby girl” Wynonna chuckles clearly enjoying this way too much.-“That’s not how that saying goes Wynonna” Waverly huffs in annoyance.-“Besides do you really want me to discuss my sexapades in front of your friend here who looks like she could throw up any moment”? She asks not waiting for an answer and turning to Nicole “No offense red but you’re not my type” she winks-“None taken” Nicole replies quickly wanting nothing more than the ground to open up and swallow her whole.-“You are taking my room baby girl and ginger snap here can have yours” she gives Nicole a look that clearly says “no funny business” before climbing up the stairs to check on her daughter.Nicole gawks at Wynonna’s retreating form clearly intimidated, when Waverly drags her into the kitchen. “Meet me out by the lake tomorrow at 6am” she whispers. “We can’t talk here. Thin walls. There’s an old maple tree with a tire swing, I’ll meet you there. Use the back door and don’t be late”. She warns and walks away before Nicole has a chance to even open her mouth. ******************************* Nicole carefully sneaks out the back door and makes her way towards the lake. It’s a few minutes past six and the sun’s just peeping through the mountains. She is wearing a pair of Waverly’s sweatpants which are way too short and a hoodie that thankfully fits alright. As she nears the lake she can see Waverly sitting under the Maple tree waiting.“Hey there good morning” Nicole greets her once she is close enough.-“There’s nothing good about this morning” Waverly pouts patting the ground besides her motioning Nicole to sit. Nicole does as she’s told and patiently waits for Waverly to talk.-“Urrgghh everything’s a mess and nothing’s going according to plan” She says through gritted teeth, combing her fingers through her honey brown hair in frustration.-“Would you care to explain please” Nicole pushes but not unkindly. -“Champ is going to propose” she blurts out looking like she’s going to throw up any moment.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
-“Who the hell is this Champ now” Nicole asks very confused.-“A boy…..man I dated back in high school” she groans-“A boy-man”? Nicole smirks, her eyebrows raised. “I’ve been there. It’s the worst”-“I definitely need to hear that story” she says rather surprised.-“Nope. Not happening”-“Should I start with mine then”?-“By all means”Waverly rolls her eyes before speaking “So I’ve known Champ Hardy since Kindergarten and dated him throughout high school” She explains. “He was a nice enough guy, dumb as a doornail but you know good looking, high School Jock. I was a cheerleader so we were a match made in heaven, the perfect couple. And that was a time in my life when I thought I couldn’t do better than that. We were just kids and it was fun until it wasn’t. I grew up and he didn’t” she rubbed her face in desperation. “I broke up with him during my second year at University. The long distance wasn’t working and I had gradually started to realize I wanted more out of life than just being a girlfriend or wife or mother; while he was happy being a small town boy, which is great but I figured it wasn’t for me and moving away from Purgatory just reinforced those beliefs. She rambles. “He kept asking me to take him back but I was adamant. We remained friends though which is inevitable coz common friends and all that”. She leans back against the tree, the back of her head hitting the trunk with a soft thud. -“If you broke up with him, why the hell is he proposing”? Nicole asks trying to make sense of it all.-“That’s because we’ve broken up numerous times before, however we’d always end up together after a while. He would somehow manage to convince me to take him back. And I did. Small town, limited dating options” She says sheepishly and turns to face Nicole expecting to see judgy eyes looking back at her. Nicole however gives her a kind smile and nods understandingly, encouraging her to continue. “He probably thinks a grand gesture like a proposal will change my mind this time. And that shit- ticket went straight to Gus and Curtis and asked for their permission. He knows I would never want to hurt or disappoint them. For someone who’s dumb he played real smart”. She is fuming now. “He and his family are coming over for dinner tomorrow and he plans on proposing in front of everyone. That’s what Gus and Curtis wanted to talk to me about last night. They were surprised when he showed up to seek their blessings but they just assumed we’d gotten back together. They said they were happy for me and would support me if that’s what I really wanted even if they aren’t too fond of the ‘lazy dim-witted boy’” She quotes.-“Waverly I really think you should talk to your Aunt and Uncle and tell them about Perry asap, before things get out of hand” Nicole suggests.Nicole, the Hardys and McCreadys have been friends for generations. Gus and Curtis seemed really happy for me. I wanted so badly to tell them, but I chickened out. They’ve also been thinking of retiring and handing over Shorty’s to Wynonna and me. They’d been delaying it because they didn’t know what my plans were after graduation. And now with champ and his damn proposal they want to go ahead with that too”.-“But Waverly you just said it yourself. Gus and Curtis will support you no matter what”.-It’s not them Nicole. It’s Wynonna I’m more worried about” she says with a frown.-“Wynonna? But Waverly she adores you. Are you sure you aren’t overthinking”? Nicole asks with a frown of her own.-“Nicole, she chased Champ out of our house with peacemaker a few years back when she walked in on us making out in my bedroom”-“Peacemaker”? Nicole asked quickly, her stomach in knots thinking about Waverly kissing this Champ character.-“Wynonna’s gun” she clarifies. “It’s a family heirloom, belonging to our great great grandfather. It doesn’t even shoot straight but that didn’t stop Champ from almost shitting himself. He didn’t talk to me for a week after that”.Nicole bit the insides of her cheek to keep herself form laughing. She could clearly envision Wynonna doing something like that.“It’s not funny Nicole” Waverly pouts reading Nicole’s expression. “Fine maybe a little funny” she adds trying hard to hide a smile of her own, after Nicole gives her an amused stare. “But don’t you see it, if she can do that to Champ whom we’ve known forever, imagine what she’ll do to Perry. Firstly she’ll demand to meet him and then she’ll scare him away” she says sounding anxious. “She means well most of the times but she can be lot too. And not everybody gets that. People are easily intimidated by her” She turns her head to face the lake and after small pause continues “She still thinks I’m the little baby sister she left behind to go explore the world” there’s no bitterness in her voice just a hint of sadness. “She’s not too good with words and this is just her way of showing that she’ll always be there to protect me. But I’m not a child anymore. And I want her to trust me enough to know that I can take care of myself and make my own decisions”.Nicole silently listens without interrupting. She understands Waverly’s need to vent out. And it definitely seems like she’d been wanting to get this out of her system for a while now.-“Nicole I love her so much. She and Alice are my whole world. But I love Perry too and I feel like I’ve finally found someone who gets me, who listens to me and shares the same interests as me. He doesn’t tune out when I ramble away about history and art and all the other stuff that excites me. I’ve never had that before, and I cannot risk losing him just because Wynonna thinks he isn’t good for me”. She says in frustration.Nicole desperately wants to tell her that anyone who truly loves her will never let her go, even if it means staring down the barrel of Wynonna’s peacemaker, but holds herself back. “I still feel you should tell them about Perry” she says instead.“It’s too complicated Nicole. It’s just a huge mess. But thankfully I have a plan” she says with a smug look on her face.Nicole awaits in anticipation for Waverly to reveal it.“I’m going to go head-for-the-hills” she says coolly. “Pun intended”“NO” says Nicole sternly. “You’re not running away. It’s a bad bad idea. It has several risks and can cause you loads of trouble”.-“I’m not going away for good silly. I was supposed to stay here for a week or two and then leave anyway. The only difference is I will be leaving a little earlier than anticipated”. She shrugs like this is as normal as her other day to day activities. “I'm going to leave Wynonna a text explaining everything. Well not everything, just that I’m not marrying Champ and that I need to get away for a bit to figure things out for myself?-“But……”-“Nicole, Wynonna left us a tiny note when she left. It’s going to be fine and I’ll just be a few hours away from Purgatory” -“When are you going to tell them about Perry”?-“Not until I get to Jasper and settle in. If I say anything now, Wynonna will find us, I’m sure of that. I need to make sure Perry is well prepared to meet my crazy family before I mention him”.Nicole isn’t happy with the plan but she knows by now not to argue with the feisty brunette sitting beside her. *********************** -“What the hell is the meaning of all of this Champ”? Waverly asks furious, eyes narrow as slits. He had casually shown up at the homestead around noon to ask Waverly out on a lunch date. She had dragged him away from the house and were now standing close to the barn away from Wynonna’s sharp ears.-“Come on babe, aren’t you excited about tomorrow”? He asks with a dirty smirk.-“For the last and final time Champ. I – am – not – your - babe” she whispers between gritted teeth.-“Quit playing these games now Waverly” Champ says mildly irritated. “You and I both know that we are meant to be together. We’ve always been perfect for each other. You may not feel so now but once we are married you’ll realize it was the best decision of your life”.-“Games? How dare you Champ. I clearly remember telling you that we were done. For good”.-“Look Waverly, it’ll do you a whole lot good to change that attitude of yours. It’s not like you have a line of people waiting to date or marry you” he scoffs. “Just coz you went off to some University and have a degree doesn’t change anything. You’re still an Earp and I’m the best you can do and you know that”.-“Screw you Champ” she spat out before turning around and marching towards the house.-“Wear something nice. I’m waiting” he yells after her with a satisfied smile. He knows how to rattle her nerves and play with her insecurities. ***************************** Waverly enters the house and goes straight for the back door thankful for not having run into Wynonna. She is furious but she knows better now. She will not let Champ play with her emotions ever again. Stepping onto the back porch she hurries towards the lake where she knows the redhead is playing with Alice. The sound of giggles and laughter helps dispel her anger. As she approaches the maple tree, the site in front of her melts her heart. Alice was sat on the tire while Nicole is pushing the swing from behind. Both laughing. Happy.-“Hey Guys, having fun”?-“Loads of fun Auntie wavy. Nicole never gets tired of pushing the swing” she smiles a giddy smile that matches Nicole’s minus the dimple.-“But baby girl, your lunch is ready and Mama wants you back inside asap”.-“But ….”-“Sweetie” Waverly warns gently.-“Alright, see you later Nicole” she says as she drags herself back to the house.-“Hey what’s the matter. You look like you could kill someone right now” Asks Nicole noticing Waverly’s red flushed face.-“Champ’s here and he had the nerve to ask me out on a lunch date” she says with a frown, folding her arms across her chest.-“So are you going”?-“Yeah, when hell freezes over” she scoffs-“You might want to tell him that” Nicole says looking over Waverly’s shoulder. A young buffed up, tattooed guy with greasy hair is marching towards them, eyeing them curiously.-“Is he coming this way”? Asks Waverly-“Yup” Nicole answers and is aware by the tone of Waverly’s voice that she’s up to something.-“Can he see us clearly” she asks again in a hurry-“I’m guessing he can” she answers, the mysterious look on Waverly’s face making her nervous.-“Promise me you won’t be mad” she demands.-“Why would I be m…..uufff” before Nicole can even complete her sentence she can feel the breadth sucked out of her lungs. Waverly has grabbed her by her t-shirt and crashed her lips onto hers. She’s so shocked by this unexpected move that she’s just frozen into place, eyes shut tight. The kiss is chaste and those soft lips leave hers as hastily as they’d met leaving her flustered and wanting more. She fights hard not to let out a whimper at the loss of touch. The sound of Champ’s voice spewing profanities brings her out of daze. Feeling breathless her eyes nervously flit between the brunette and the boy-man.-“Fuck you Waverly” he screams giving both her and Nicole dirty looks before turning around and marching off embarrassed with a severely bruised ego.-“Not even in your dreams Champ” Waverly shouts back smirking truly satisfied with the turn of events and completely unaware of the gay mess that is one Nicole Haught. ************************** -“Aunt Wavy, lunch isn’t even ready yet, you lied to me” Alice pouts giving Waverly who had just walked into the kitchen an accusatory look.-“Really sorry baby girl, I’m sure it was a misunderstanding” she replies giving Alice a guilty smile. She’ll make up for it later she thinks.-“Was it really”? Wynonna appears out of nowhere making her jump. “And was that Champ I heard yelling his top off”?-“Yes but I’ve taken care of it”. -“Talk to me baby girl” Wynonna almost begs sounding a little desperate.-“I will Nonna, I promise. Just not right now” she says as she hurries out of the kitchenNicole had followed Waverly back and witnessed the whole interaction. She feels a pang of guilt course through her as she watches Wynonna’s hurt ridden expression as she watches her baby sister leave the room. She clears her throat to make her presence known and Wynonna immediately schools her face.-“H..hey” Nicole stammers-“What’s up with you”? She asks suspiciously looking at Nicole’s flushed face. “Why do you look like someone who’s done something they shouldn’t be doing”?-“What… no.. I haven’t …. I mean…” Nicole splutters-“Relax red… just yanking your chains” She smirks as she walks out of the room leaving Nicole to her thoughts.Nicole didn’t relax. She knew she shouldn’t be reading too much into what had happened earlier. The kiss was just for show, to drive Champ away. But she had developed a huge crush on Waverly. Something she wasn’t ready to admit before but the kiss had only confirmed those feelings. She couldn’t help but hope. ‘Stop that Nicole’ she mentally scolded herself. Waverly saw her as a friend and nothing more. All she can do now is accept it and be happy for Waverly.-“Nicole would like to continue watching that movie with me” Asks Alice looking up at her expectantly.-“Sure Alice, I would love to” she responds kindly snapping out of her thoughts. ************************ -“Wake up, Nicole Wake up” Waverly whispers as she tries to wake Nicole up from her slumber. She had crept into her bedroom to say buy to Nicole and collect her backpack and a small duffel bag that she had packed and kept ready to go.-“What…. What’s happening” Nicole yelps, sitting up in bed, hair tousled, groggy confused eyes flitting in all directions.-“Shhhhhhh. Please don’t yell. It’s me”. Pleads Waverly“Waverly what are you doing here” she groans with her sleep coated voice. “What time is it”?“Shhhh. It’s close to 1am. I just came to say goodbye. I’m leaving. Go back to sleep” Waverly says excitedly grabbing her backpack and duffel bag from underneath the bed.-“Wait … you mean you’re leaving like right right now”? Nicole starts to panic, sleep long forgotten.-“Yup, right now”.-“But what about me”?-“You can stay back for a few more days and then leave”-“Not happening Waverly. Champ saw us, what if he blurts everything out to Wynonna. She’s going to kill me”-“Then why don’t you just skip-a-doodle with me”?-“Waverly that could lead to even more trouble. They’ll think we’ve run off together”.-“How does that matter anyway. I mean I’ll be heading to Jasper and you can go back to Toronto”-“Okay Okay, give me a second, let me change real quick” ******************************** Is Perry coming to Purgatory to pick you up”? Nicole asks after long silence. They had left in the rental Jeep, thankfully without any hiccups. Nicole was more interested in getting them as far away from the homestead as possible then making conversation. But they would soon be reaching the edge of town and she wanted to know how Waverly planned on getting to Jasper.-“Nope” Waverly shrugs.-“Where is he meeting you then? I mean I can drive you to the pick-up point”.-“I’m meeting him in Jasper”-“You mean to say he isn’t picking you up”? Nicole asks surprised.-“Actually I haven’t been able to reach him, calls going to voicemail. But it’s okay really. I spoke to him before leaving Toronto. Besides the thought of surprising him is so much more appealing” She says mischievously.Nicole Jaw drops to the floor, she’s so shocked she pulls up at the side of the road turning to face her. “Waverly are telling me that you are leaving your family, going all the way to Jasper to be with your boyfriend and he doesn’t even know it”? She sounds extremely mad her hands tightly gripping the steering wheel.Waverly simply shrugs and gives her a sweet smile and Nicole instantly forgets to be mad. Loosening her grip on the wheel she lets out a deep breath and stares into the empty road in from her. They sit in silence for a few more minutes before Nicole asks, her voice soft and dripping with concern “Why are you doing this Waverly? What are you playing at”?-“Life, Nicole” she answers without missing a beat the smile never leaving her face “Life’s the only game worth playing”. “What about you? What’s your favorite game?” she doesn’t wait for Nicole to answer though. “Let me guess. Basketball? Soccer? No? It has to be car racing then. Right”?-“You know, I thought the Universe was finally done being mad at me. But here I am being handed another problem” Nicole says shaking her head, ignoring Waverly. Though her words are a bit harsh her tone doesn’t hold any malice.-“How rude” Waverly huffs. “You’re seriously calling me a problem Haught”? She gasps in mock offense.-“Are you really surprised? YOU come up with crazy ideas. YOU are running off to be with your boyfriend and will be happily married soon. And what am I doing here? Oh yeah, I am the one helping you elope. And it is I who will be at risk of being murdered by an overly protective sister? Why do you ask? Because no one has ever heard of Perry except me. But everyone knows a redhead named Nicole. How convenient. And the best part Waverly, I’m not even getting the girl”. She scoffs throwing her arms up in the air.Waverly rolls her eyes “Stop being so dramatic. If you’re so terrified of her then why didn’t you try harder to woo her? It could have solved a whole lot of your problems” she saying throwing her a wink.Nicole throws her a dirty look, one eyebrow raised and Waverly stares right back trying hard to keep a straight face until she can’t hold it in any longer and bursts out laughing only to have Nicole join her a second later. They continue laughing until their eyes water and tummies hurt.-“You are so enjoying this right”? Nicole asks breathless, wiping away at her eyes with the palms of her hands.-“You worry too much Nicole. Everything is going to be just fine” Waverly tries to pacify her.-“You are consoling me? Really Waverly? All I have to do is grab a flight and I’ll be back home to my old life, hopefully with new found perspectives. But what about you? Doesn’t this seem a bit too precarious? Please don’t get me wrong here Waves, I’m not judging you just trying to understand you”? Her voice was kind as always but full of concern.-“Waves”??Nicole instantly blushes “Shit… I….I’m so sorry Waverly. It just slipped out…….I…” but her nervous apologies are cut off by Waverly’s giggles.-“It’s okay Nicole, I don’t mind. Gosh it’s so easy to get you worked up”-“You’re insufferable” Nicole huffs, a shy smile gracing her lips, still feeling the heat of the blush on her face. “But seriously Waverly, you can’t keep taking everything so lightly. Real life isn’t fun all the time. We have to be serious about some stuff too. Our actions have consequences”.-“Nicole you took life seriously. But look where that led you. That didn’t stop you from getting into trouble did it”? Waverly tries to reason with her. “Our future is full of uncertainties and we don’t have control over every aspect of our lives, so I just like to go with the flow, follow my heart. All these decisions and mistakes if any are mine and I guess in the event that something does go wrong I think I’ll manage. At least I will have no one else to blame but me.Nicole is taking in every word, quietly comparing how different they are in the way they view life as a whole.“Alright this has to stop right now Nicole Haught. This conversation is getting too philosophical for my liking” Waverly grins her eyes twinkling. Nicole can’t help but give her a smile too.-“But you know what Nicole? These last few days that that I’ve spent with you have been some of my favorite. I’m going to cherish them forever. They are definitely going to make for some happy memories especially when we are old and grey and reminiscing over our past”.Nicole beams at Waverly. It seems like Waverly stole her thoughts and put them into words. She knows for sure she won’t be forgetting these last few days like ever. She won’t be forgetting Waverly ever. But for Waverly to share similar thoughts means the world to her.-“Nicole?” Waverly calls out to her deep in thought just as she reaches for the key in the ignition. “Do you really think this is a bad idea”?-“Yes” Nicole answers sincerely. Waverly’s shoulders slump and chin drops to her chest. “But having said that, a super smart, intelligent woman once told me that all is fair in love”. Waverly perks up at this and gives Nicole a grateful smile. ”Besides I’m beginning to understand my mother much better now, all because of you Waverly. And Wynonna will understand too. I mean if that’s what you’re worried about”.Waverly gives her the widest smile the type that makes her eyes go all moon shaped. And before she knows it, Waverly reaches over the Jeep’s console and pulls Nicole into a tight hug. Nicole returns the hug awkwardly patting her back. “Alright let’s get you to Jasper” she says gently pulling back and starting the engine.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Nicole pulls up outside the Jasper Arts and History Museum. They had been on the road for almost six hours. Waverly had offered to take over the driving half way through, however, Nicole had assured her that she would be fine. Truth be told she wanted something else to focus on other than the fact that this might be the last time she would be seeing the hazel eyed brunette. Just the mere thought of saying goodbye was causing her heart to break into a million pieces. She could feel her herself getting all misty-eyed but she couldn’t let Waverly see that. Imagine how awkward that conversation would be if she asked what was wrong. And she would definitely ask. ‘Oh guess what Waverly, I think I may have developed some serious feeling for you. How about ditching nerd boy here and hooking up with me instead ’? Not happening. And so she drove stopping only once for fuel and some coffee, pushing all those unwanted and painful thoughts that were threatening to pop up without warning. However, as she parks the Jeep and cuts off the engine, all those thoughts come flooding back. This is it. This is where she was going to say her final good bye to Waverly. Taking a deep breath and ignoring the light throbbing pain in her back she turns to face Waverly, who is brimming with excitement. “God I’m finally here” she squeals, her smile so wide it lights up her whole face. Happy looks so good on her, Nicole thinks. And in that moment she realizes that she would do absolutely anything to see Waverly happy, even driving almost six hours to help her be with the person she loves.-“We’re here” Nicole says in a quiet voice before jumping out of the Jeep. She crosses over to the other side and holds open the passenger side door for Waverly to get out.-“And they say Chivalry is dead” Waverly teases palyfully as she gets out and hurries to get her bags from the back of the Jeep. Nicole simply smiles back afraid she might end up saying something stupid if she opens her mouth to speak.-“Come on” Waverly urges, pulling her towards the steps that lead up to the wide front porch of the Museum. As they approach the steps, Waverly feels Nicole slow down forcing her to stop. She turns around to face her finds Nicole looking at her with such intensity, she’s taken aback a little but her mind is too preoccupied to really stop and comprehend. “Hey what’s wrong”?Nicole knows that she is being a little too obvious right now with the way she’s looking at Waverly, all heart eyes. She can’t help it though. If this is the last time she’s going to see her she might as well lay herself bare even if just for one moment, pour out all her feeling through her eyes, without holding back. Without any reservations. After everything that had gone down with Shae, she’d never thought she would be capable of loving someone again. But Waverly had unknowingly, in her own crazy way reassured her and made her recognize that she was in fact a sucker for love despite being a broken soul. She can’t take her eyes off of her and Waverly’s question remains unanswered. She can see the cogs in Waverly’s head turning, but she can also tell she’s too excited to meet Perry to fully understand the implications of that look. Nicole finds her feet involuntarily moving forward. Her affectionate gaze doesn’t waver once as she steps into Waverly’s space. To her surprise Waverly doesn’t step back or flinch, just looks back with curiosity “Nicole”?Waverly’s concerned voice sweetly calling out her name snaps her back into reality. “Goodbye Waverly” she finally manages to say, her eyes misty, a small but warm smile adorning her lips.-“What? I thought you’d want to come in and say hi”.-“Don’t ever change, okay. Be you, always” She whispers and her smile only grows as she finally resigns to her fate of never seeing Waverly again. She isn’t afraid anymore though, because she knows Waverly would silently reside in her heart forever, pushing her forward, giving her the power to continue to live in her spirit. Stepping back slowly she continues “Take care Waverly” and with that she turns around and walks back to the Jeep.Waverly takes a few seconds to stare at Nicole’s retreating form before running up the steps taking them two at a time.Nicole pulls open the door of the Jeep. Before getting in however, she turns around unable to stop herself from taking one last look at the girl who had captured her heart and in a short period of time managed to have such a profound impact on her.She is pleasantly surprised to see Waverly looking back at her from the porch of the museum, smiling radiantly and waving her goodbye. She waves back as she gets in and drives away knowing that going forward everything will be okay. This journey from being lost, depressed and heartbroken to finally finding herself and hopefully loving herself enough to move on, had been filled with amazing life lessons. She’d made beautiful new memories she’d cherish forever, but none could beat that one image that would surely be etched in her mind forever, that of one Waverly Earp smiling at her from the front porch. ********************** The first thing Nicole does after she’s drops Waverly off, is call Randy Nedley. She lets him know she is okay and that she would be in Toronto soon. He is relieved to receive her call and can’t wait to see her.Once in Toronto, Nedley and her assistant Jeremy Chetri help her organize a corporate conference where she addresses the company’s enraged associates and stakeholders with new found confidence. She apologizes for her absence and convinces them to give her an opportunity to make things right.Next she calls her mother and requests a meeting. What she learns from her is a real eye opener. It so happened that her parents had had a rocky marriage from the very beginning. They were extremely unhappy and decided to live separate lives but were forced to keep up appearances for the sake of the business. They both began seeing other people and were fully aware of each other’s affairs. However her mother had finally found someone who genuinely cared for her and loved her. And when she’d finally approached her husband to discuss a legal separation he had refused. He had then leaked the information of her affair to the press to destroy her reputation and weaken her case if she ever decided to take him to court.Nicole is speechless but is grateful for her mother’s honesty. She agrees to sign on her claims, and reinstates her prior position in the company, leaving her mother equally stunned. They both agree they need to work on their personal relationship as well but decide not rush and take it one day at a time, for now focusing solely on how to successfully revive the company. ********************************
9 months later
-“Mama, Mama hurry up” Alice screams with excitement. She’s on the living room couch at the homestead flipping through TV channels, when she comes across something that excites her to no end. “You’ve got to see this”.-“Not now baby girl, I’ve got to get lunch ready” Wynonna shouts back from the kitchen. This had been going on for the last half hour. Every time Alice found something exciting on TV she would call for Wynonna to come look and that had only delayed their lunch preparations.-“But Mama it’s Nicole, she’s on TV”.As soon as she hears Nicole’s name Wynonna rushes to the living room “Baby girl what do mean Nic……..” she is at a loss for words as she looks at the screen to find Nicole….. no Nicole Haught, heir to Haught Industries being interviewed by some news channel. She’s overcome with rage and has to stop herself from punching the Television. She can’t lose control in front of her daughter. Taking out her phone she quickly makes her way out of the house and onto the front porch. Dialing Curtis’s number she waits for him to pick up. “I’ve found that ginger bitch” she whispers with fury trying hard to keep her anger in check knowing her daughter is on the other side of the door. “We’re flying to Toronto asap”. ********************************** Nine months on and Nicole’s life has not only been amazing but also transformative, be it professional or personal. For as long as she could remember Nicole let her circumstances control her life. Waverly however had inspired her to take charge and go for what she wanted, like REALLY wanted and that had been a major turning point in her life. And under the guidance of Nedley and her mother she is slowly but surely driving her company to new heights. Nicole is happy and thriving. She is also making sure to take some time out of her busy schedule to make music, write new songs and play her guitar, something she had long given up on until Waverly had encouraged her to take up again. And to honor the bubbly, cheerful, talkative and high-spirited girl who has completely changed the course of her life, Nicole with the help of her Telecom department has recently launched a new long distance calling card called ‘WAVES’.Due to the product’s successful initial launch, she was in talks with her product team discussing and planning its simultaneous release in other multiple locations. She’d given numerous interviews with leading news channels to promote and market the same.As usual she was cooped up in her cabin one afternoon along with Nedley discussing marketing campaigns, sales collaterals, trained sales, support reps etc. They were almost done and winding up when her cabin door burst open with a loud bang that made both her and Nedley jump. Her jaw literally hit the floor when she saw the person who was responsible for kicking her door down and walk inside.-“Wynonna”? She exclaims her voice full of surprise as she stands up from her seat to greet her. She stops in her tracks however when she sees the look on her face. She is stood there in the middle of the office with a hostile glare, clenched jaw and curled lip. If looks could kill, Nicole would have been dead by now and it was only then that she notices Curtis McCready and a very flustered Jeremy hurry in after her.-“Sorry I couldn’t stop her” he squeals.-“It’s alright Jer, they are friends. I got it from here” she replies putting him at ease. “Nedley could you please give us a minute”? She asks turning to him next.-“Only if you’re sure” he says not wanting to leave Nicole alone with this crazy looking woman.-“Positive” she answers without hesitation before he leaves. “Wynonna, Curtis” she greets them kindly. “What a pleasant surpr……..” but before she can even complete her sentence Wynonna steps into her space and holds her tightly by the lapels of her suit making her yelp in shock.-“Where is she”? She asks in a menacing voice, her eyes red with rage almost popping out of the sockets.-“What…. What are you talk… talking about Wynonna”? Nicole gulps voice stammering with a mix of fear and confusion. -“Waverly. Where’s Waverly”? She repeats, her grip on the suit loosening a little and eyes misting over.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Nicole is left speechless and confused. Her eyes flit between Wynonna and Curtis who has rushed forward and is pulling Wynonna off of her. She reluctantly lets go and takes a step back breathing heavily.-“I want her here NOW Haught” she growls as Curtis looks on disappointingly at Nicole.Nicole feels a pang of shame course through her for lying to these people and hiding her true identity. But they’ve got this all wrong. “Wynonna she’s not with me” she answers calmly sending pleading glances towards Curtis hoping at least he would believe her.-“I’m so done with your bullshit” she says spitting fire and taking step closer to Nicole but Curtis is quicker this time and manages to hold her back. “Wynonna please let me talk okay, just calm down” he says trying to placate her.-“Calm down? Calm down”? She screams at Curtis “How can I calm down when I haven’t heard from my baby sister in nine months. Nine months Uncle Curtis”. She then turns back to face Nicole her eyes shining with unshed tears “A text, that’s all I got from her the night you two took off”.-“Wynonna she …..” Nicole tries to cut in desperate to explain herself.-“Don’t you dare lie to us again” she threatens. “Just one, just one kick to his balls and Champ sang like the Canary. He told us what he saw. You’ve also named one of those damn calling cards after her. WAVES. Haven’t you”? She asks with a sneer while Nicole looked like a deer caught in the headlight. “So you better hurry up and tell us where she is before I lose my shit and fuck up your pretty lil face so bad they’d have to change your last name”.Nicole visibly gulps a small worry wrinkle forming on her forehead as Curtis chides Wynonna “Will you just stop and let me do the talking here” Then turning to Nicole he begs “Nicole, please. We all know you two left Purgatory together, so how could you not know where she is? Please, you have to tell us. Did something happen? Is she dead”? He asks bluntly, putting up a brave face but unable to hide the dread in his eyes at the possibility of this being true.-“Curtis please, I’m sure she’s fine” Nicole tries to quickly pacify him as Wynonna chokes back a sob.-“Because it’s so unlike her not to talk to us for so long” he cuts in ignoring Nicole, voice filled with concern. “We gave her time to figure things out just like she’d asked in her text, but when we didn’t hear back from her for two whole weeks, we knew something was wrong. She would never do this to us. We’ve even filed a missing persons report at the Sheriff’s office”.-“Waverly is doing okay Curtis. Trust me she’s fine” she repeats silently pleading them to believe her.-“And how would you know that”? Wynonna questions back clearly frustrated with this back and forth, not believing a single word Nicole spoke.-“I just know” Nicole answers willing herself to be calm. “Curtis, she’s alive and well, please trust me on this”.“So you do know where she is then” Wynonna spits out her fists clenched with anger.“She is with you then, is that what you’re saying”? Curtis asks sounding hopeful.Nicole shuts her eyes and lets out a shaky breath psyching herself for yet another lie she’s about to speak. “Yes. Yes she’s with me” she admits quietly, forcing herself to look into the eyes of the two people in front of her.-“I knew it. I fucking new it” Wynonna shouts with a mixture of anger and relief. “We want to see her right now” she demands.-“She isn’t in Toronto at the moment” Nicole says truthfully.-“You’re making it extremely hard for me not to punch you, Haught. Please don’t tempt me and why should we even believe you? You’ve been lying to us form the start”.-“Curtis please believe me, I’ll bring her home to Purgatory” Nicole addresses Waverly’s uncle ignoring Wynonna.-“When”? Asks Curtis-“A week. Give me a week and I promise I’ll bring her home”. She responds sincerely.Wynonna is having none of this shit. “If you think we are leaving without seeing her then you’re wrong” she screams again.-“Alright. I hope to see you and Waverly in Purgatory in a weeks’ time. I’m trusting you to keep your word even though I have every reason not to do so. Do not disappoint me Nicole”. He warns her gently and signals Wynonna to leave.Wynonna is absolutely livid “I cannot believe you’re falling for her bullshit. This is just a waste of time Curtis”.-“We are leaving Wynonna. NOW” he orders her sternly grabbing her by her arm.-“I better see you in a week Haught. And not without Waverly. Coz you have no idea what I’m capable of” she throws out a final warning before being pulled out of the office.Nicole isn’t sure what she’s more afraid of. Disappointing Curtis or being murdered by Wynonna. She could have easily mentioned Perry and gotten herself out of this situation. But she couldn’t do that to Waverly. There must some valid reason why she hadn’t told them about him yet. Suddenly feeling weak in the knees she flops down into her chair. “What have you gotten yourself into now Waverly” she mutters to herself before picking up her phone and calling Jeremy. **************************** -“So tell me Miss Haught what can I do for you”? A seemingly confused Perry Crofte asks Nicole. They are both seated at his desk in his private office at the Museum. Nicole wasn’t comfortable with the idea of paying him a surprise visit, but what else could she have done? She couldn’t get through to Waverly’s phone and the only way to reach out to her was through him.-“Firstly, Nicole is just fine. Secondly but more importantly, Perry I know I shouldn’t have shown up without prior notice but Waverly’s family is really worried about her”. She didn’t know how to broach the subject other than being direct. “I assumed you guys would have visited Purgatory by now. You know to meet her fam…..”-“I’m really sorry but I have to stop you right there” Perry interrupts her, confusion written all over his face. “I really don’t know what you’re talking about”.Nicole is starting to get annoyed by his attitude “I’m talking about Waverly, your girlfriend maybe wife now”?-“Waverly isn’t my girlfriend anymore and definitely not my wife” he states matter of factly his face void of any emotion leaving Nicole stunned by this revelation. “She showed up out of the blue and was talking about moving in with me. I wasn’t ready. So I broke up with her and asked her to go back home”.-“Perry, Waverly hasn’t been home in nine months” this was turning out to be worse than she had imagined. “How could you do this to her”? She asked him in an accusatory tone.-“Whoa, back off there a bit. You have no right to judge me” He shot back. “I didn’t commit to anything. Yes, I admit we did have conversations about living together in the future and maybe marriage too, just like any other couple, but it was just that ‘conversations’ I didn’t promise her anything”.-“Then why would she just leave her family to be with you”?-“You’ve met her haven’t you”? He scoffs “She’s completely nuts. Brilliant, highly intelligent in a way that is very attractive but also crazy and immature at the same time. Always wandering in this dream world she’s created for herself. Always assuming things will turn out the way she wants them to” he defends himself.-“So what, you just go on and prove to her that her world doesn’t exist? That it is full of assholes like you?-What? What did you just call me”? He scowls rather pissed.-“You heard right. I called you an asshole” Nicole replies equally upset. She knows she isn’t being fair and it’s not entirely Perry’s fault. But Waverly is out there somewhere heartbroken and all alone, doing god knows what and someone had to take responsibility for their actions.-“Look, Nicole, you might be some bigwig business woman, heir to Haught Industries and all that, but this is a personal matter and I don’t owe you or anyone else any explanations”-“I’m not looking for any Perry, because from where I stand, everything is pretty much clear”. She frowns.-“Except for one thing though. And it’s something I’m very curious to know about.” He gives her an amused smile. ”What are you doing here? Waverly never mentioned you once. So what’s in it for you”?-“I would have told you gladly. But insensitive and heartless assholes like you wouldn’t understand” she mocks him.He cheeks flush with humiliation. “Why am I the bad one here? She’s the one who caught me off guard when she showed up at the museum, okay. Blabbering about moving in and redecorating the apartment and new color schemes, and the type of curtains she’d wanted and plants on the balcony. It was a lot” he rants unable to hide the frustration in his voice throwing his hand up in the air “I asked her to go back home to Purgatory. I told her the same thing when she kept calling me from Banff”.Nicole’s ears perk up at this. Waverly was in Banff then, she thought to herself.-“But it’s Waverly we are talking about here. She always does what she pleases and honestly I don’t care”. He huffs out.-“I need the phone number Perry” Nicole demands not interested in anything else he has to say.He eyes her with confusion. “You mentioned Waverly calling you. I need that number”. She repeats trying hard not to lose her patience.-“Oh yeah of course. The last I knew she was living with her best friend Chrissy, in Banff.” he says before handing her contact details. “That’s Chrissy’s number”. ********************************** Full of nerves, Nicole had called the number she’d gotten from Perry the previous day not knowing what to expect. She was practically a stranger and didn’t know if Chrissy would appreciate Nicole calling her. To her surprise she’d learnt that Waverly had mentioned befriending the redhead and told Chrissy how she’d helped her get home safely. Nicole was glad to hear that Waverly still lived with Chrissy, while working as a kindergarten teacher at an elementary School in the neighborhood. She however, sounded extremely concerned for the well being of her best friend and was relieved when Nicole told her she would be in Banff the next day to take Waverly back home to Purgatory. That is how Nicole found herself sitting on the front porch steps of the modest looking house that Waverly shared with Chrissy, waiting for Waverly to return home from work. Her eyes fixed on small gate attached to a wooden fence surrounding the front yard. It’s late afternoon and the weather in Banff in the month of April is still very much wintery. The extreme cool temperatures are almost gone with an average temperature of 10 to 11 degrees Celsius but there is still a lot of spongy snow on the ground. She can’t wait to see Waverly. She’s a little upset though, not only at Waverly who chose not to reach out to her but also at herself for not keeping in touch. It’s not that she had forgotten the brunette, in fact just the opposite. Waverly had resided inside her heart, a silent companion throughout these nine months, constantly inspiring her and pushing her forward while she focused on rebuilding her life. She had without a doubt assumed Waverly was living her best life too with Perry by her side, just like she’d dreamt. How absolutely wrong she was. Chrissy hadn’t told her much but from what little she was able to say Nicole had understood that Waverly hadn’t taken the rejection well and was struggling to come to terms with it.The creaking of the gate brings her out of her thoughts. Her breath hitches in her throat as she sees Waverly open the gate and enter the yard, closing it behind her. Her hair is pulled up into a tight ponytail. She’s wearing a knee length thick light blue jacket over a cream turtle neck sweater, shiny black leggings and brown snow boots. A multi-colored scarf is snugly wrapped around her neck, the wintery air flushing her cheeks. A large heavy tote bag is hanging from her shoulder and a couple of plastic folders are pressed against her chest, both arms crossed, holding them in place. She slowly walks up the pathway that leads to the house her eyes glued to the ground completely unaware of Nicole’s presence.Even through all the layers of clothing, Nicole notices Waverly has lost quite the bit of weight. Her face looks pale, and dark circle surround her eyes. To see her as a gaunt ghost of her former bubbly, cheerful, vivacious self is heart wrenching. It is clear the smaller woman is hurting and hurting bad. She remains seated waiting for Waverly to notice her. The woman who had been kind and selfless enough to try to help a complete stranger on the train is now too wrapped up in her own misery to notice her friend. At least not until she’s at the bottom of the steps which is when she stops dead in her tracks.-“Hi, what a surprise” she gasps clearly shocked to see the redhead coolly sitting on the porch steps. “What are you doing here”? She asks her eyes wide, a small forced smile gracing her lips. This smile doesn’t reach her eyes crinkling them in to moon like shapes, neither does it light up her face. And the pitiful sight of the woman who turned her life upside down nine months prior – and put it back on track, shatters her heart into a million pieces. She has to fight back the urge to scoop her up in her arms and hold her until she is free from all the hurt.Getting up from her spot on the steps she walks down to stand in front of Waverly, keeping some distance. Shoving her hands in her pocket she braves herself and smiles back “Hey! You know just passing through. Heard you were around these parts, so I thought I’d stop to say hi” she shrugs. An awkward silence settles between them for a few seconds before Nicole breaks it “So…. how have you been”? She asks trying hard not to break down in front of the woman she has come to adore immensely.-“I’m good” Waverly breathes out, the forced smile still stuck to her lips.-“yeah”?-“Yeah, totally”.-“You sure about that”? Nicole asks a slight frown just starting to form on her face.-“Of course. Everything is great”. She says trying more to pacify herself, than Nicole. But she also see that Nicole isn’t buying her crap.-“I’m so upset right now Waverly” Nicole says trying to keep her tears at bay. “One call. I was just one call away” She whispers, sorrow, disbelief, helplessness, and anger flickering across her face in the space of a few seconds. “Why didn’t you tell me”?Waverly doesn’t respond, looking anywhere other than Nicole, unable to stomach the look in her eyes.-“Go pack your stuff up. You’re coming with me” she orders but not harshly. -“Nicole, I think you should leave” she replies her voice lacking any emotions.-“Look Waverly, this is not up for debate. Go inside and get your stuff” she doesn’t want to sound mad but she is losing her patience.-“No Nicole. This is the life I made for myself. I’m not going anywhere”-“Look, Waverly, why don’t you keep your fabled philosophies to yourself. I’m not interested. You’re coming with me and that’s that” There was no way Nicole was leaving without her.-“You have no right to tell me what to do. I’m not leaving” she raises her voice, her eyes narrow with anger.-“Maybe not, but I’m not leaving without you” Nicole wasn’t giving up so easily and Waverly seems to realize this. So instead of arguing further she just starts walking up the steps hoping Nicole would leave her alone. But Nicole follows her gently grabbing her hand, stopping her form reaching for the door.-“Nicole, What the hell” she screams shooting daggers.-“I’m not leaving Waverly. Not without you” she shouts back-“Enough Nicole. Stop it” She is livid now “how dare you”? Just because I’ve been dumped doesn’t mean I’m available” she regrets it the moment the words leave her mouth. But it’s too late and the hurt is evident in Nicole’s eyes.Nicole however recovers quickly. “Got it. I shall keep that in mind” she answers, lips pursed and arms folded tightly across her chest “Now, can we leave please”? She asks in a no nonsense tone.-“Damn it Nicole” Waverly breathes out, frustrated by Nicole’s persistence, her eyes filled with unshed tears “Why are you doing this”?-“The ‘whys’ and ‘hows’ are not important here. Now go pack your bags” she orders not willing to give up.-“I can’t Nicole” She says almost choking on her words, tears rolling down her cheeks, unable to hold them any longer. “You’ve already helped me enough. I can’t ask you to do that again” she tries to reason with her.-“You have no idea, have you Waverly”? Nicole asks, her own eyes misting over. “It’s not me who’s helped you. It’s you who has helped me” she emphasizes. “I was at my lowest when we met and I had almost given up but you saved me… from me. I cannot even begin to tell you how much of an impact you’ve had on my life and changed it for the better” she says looking at her with such reverence, Waverly just stares back dumbfounded. “You’ve been my guide, my inspiration. Every time I was close to giving up I’d think ‘What would Waves do in this situation? How would she react? How would she tackle this problem’? And I would do just that. And it worked every single time” She hopes against all hope that Waverly would understand how she had altered the course of the redhead's life without even knowing it and how grateful she was for it. “I wouldn’t be the person I am today without you Waverly. So can you please, please go bring your stuff so we can leave”?Waverly is still gaping at Nicole a slight frown forming on her face, searching the taller woman’s eyes for any signs of pity or disappointment. But she finds none. And somewhere deep within her heart she knows she can trust Nicole not to let her down “Okay. Okay, I’ll go with you”. She says finally giving in to the redhead’s pleas.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Saying Waverly was shocked to see Nicole sitting on her front porch was an understatement. She had thought of the redhead quite often during these nine months and her sudden appearance had left her with a lot of unanswered questions, questions she needed answers to.Sitting cross legged on her bed at the Banff Springs hotel, she carefully takes in a spoonful of steaming hot, sweet and sour soup into her mouth. Her heart had skipped a beat when she’d seen a small jar of peanut butter under the cloche along with the bowl of soup. She couldn’t remember telling Nicole how she liked to have her soup, but the fact that there was peanut butter, confirmed she must have mentioned it at some point. But what amazed her even more was that Nicole had actually remembered such a trivial detail that was told to her in passing all those months ago. She’s so lost in her thoughts she doesn’t realize Nicole is silently watching her leaning against the bedroom door of their luxury suite. The sound of Nicole clearing her throat makes her jump.-“Sorry” she apologizes sheepishly “didn’t mean scare you”-“It’s okay don’t worry about it” Waverly waves off the apology.-“So if you’re comfortable here, I’ll go book myself another room”.-“Why would you do that”? Waverly asks with a frown. “It’s a huge suite Nicole. There’s more than enough room for the both of us”.-“Hmm, alright then” she agrees walking inside the bedroom “But let me warn you, I know a bit Karate” she adds playfully, mimicking a couple self-defense poses. “So us sharing a room shouldn’t be a problem anyway”.-“Don’t worry, you wouldn’t need to use your ‘Karate’ on me”. Waverly replies rolling her eyes.-“Just putting it out there” she shrugs “I don’t want you getting any ideas”-“I’m not getting…..” but stops mid-sentence when she sees the playful smirk on Nicole’s lips. “You’re insufferable” she says in mock offense before sharing a quick laugh with her.The laugh still doesn’t reach her eyes, however Nicole is relieved to see Waverly being comfortable in her presence. Glad that she’s able to bring a small smile to her angelic face.-“What a night that was” she hears Waverly with distant look in her eyes. “Do you remember that motel”?-“Pussy Willows” Nicole replies sitting on the edge of the bed.-“Of course you would remember” Waverly teases “Miss Flashy Bosoms”.-“You know you can simply say tits or boobs, right”? She says finding Waverly’s tact adorable “By the way let me tell you that ‘Miss Flashy Bosoms’ thought you were an escort”. She teases back with a chuckle but stops abruptly the moment she sees the frown forming on Waverly’s face. “Not that it’s any of their business”. She adds quickly afraid she has offended the brunette.-“I know Nicole, it’s not that……. It’s just……. Why didn’t you say anything”? She asks her eyes wide as saucers.-“Remember I asked you to let me do the talking. But you were…. Well you were just busy being you” She shakes her head offering Waverly a small non-judgmental smile.-“Well shoot” she chuckles but it lacks humor. “God, how could I have been so stupid” she whispers, her voice cracking and Nicole can sense her slowly drifting back to that dark place she’s been stuck in all these months.-“Stop it right there Waverly Earp. You may be a lot of things but stupid isn’t one of them. We all make stupid mistakes, that doesn’t make you stupid, alright” Nicole tries to pacify her.Nicole’s words, however don’t seem to have an effect on her “I’ve been so foolish and self-absorbed, I failed to notice things happening around me. I have been so focused on living in this make-belief world that I failed to acknowledge the real one” Waverly chokes back a sob “I could’ve gotten into so much trouble. I HAVE gotten myself into so much trouble. Nicole, what have I done? I feel so trapped” she sobs, her hands covering her face, the damn finally breaking.Nicole’s heart aches at the site. Her hands twitch from the efforts she’s putting in to stop herself from embracing the woman who has curled in on herself. Taking a deep breath she composes herself, rubbing away the tears that have escaped her own eyes as she addresses Waverly “Why didn’t you go back home”? This was something she had been trying to make sense of ever since she’d spoken to Perry.-“I don’t know” she whispers turning to face Nicole, her eyes begging to be understood. “I wanted him back so bad, it was all I could think of. I kept telling myself that if I’d just say the right thing, he’d be convinced and everything would go back to how it was and then we’d go visit Purgatory together. I can’t believe I was so naïve, so clueless. Maybe I deserve to be alone” she manages to say before another wave of tears crashes down on her. “I don’t know what to do anymore”Nicole feels helpless watching Waverly go through so much pain. She’s so mad at Perry for causing the kindest, most amazing woman on this planet so much grief. Unable to bear it any longer she kneels down in front of her “Waverly maybe it’s time to let him go. Take control over your life and move forward” she says assertively. “He isn’t coming back. If he wanted to, he would have by now, don’t you think? He’s happy where he is and has moved on”. She didn’t want to hurt Waverly any more than she already was, but she wouldn’t hide the fact that she’d seen Perry.-“Did you see him”? She asks her sounding every bit hopeful, wounding Nicole’s already aching heart.-“Yes, I did” She confirmed-“What did he say”? Waverly asks through her sobs.-“Waverly it’s over. I’m sorry but holding on to him is only going to hurt you” Having gone through something similar, Nicole understands exactly what it’s like to be rejected, to not feel good enough. And she desperately wants to help Waverly be herself again and she knows exactly what to do for starters. “You know what Waverly” she says as she stands back up, schooling her face, her eyes shining with mischief “just kick him out of your life” she adds trying to cheer her up. “Better yet, we need a photograph. Just tear it up and flush him out of your life. What say”? She wriggles her eyebrows “come on, get his picture” She pushes with excitement.-“I don’t have one” Waverly sniffles, gawking at Nicole like she’s some alien.-“Shucks man” Nicole huffs out in disappointment pacing back and forth trying to come up with some other ideas “What else … what else… what else…. Yess!! Call him. Yeah let’s do that. Let’s call him and you cuss up a storm” she pulls out her phone from her pocket and hands it to Waverly who has climbed out of the bed and is standing facing the redhead looking at her like she’s grown horns out of head.Nicole doesn’t seem to notice and shoves the phone into her hand and waits expectantly for Waverly to say something.-“Nicole this is ridic…” Waverly starts but is quickly interrupted by Nicole.-“Ridiculous? Immature? Childish? Of course it is. All the more reason why you should do it” Nicole eggs her on “Call him and get it all out of your system. Do not hold back” She warns her playfully.-“But Nicole…….”-“Trust me Waverly” Nicole cuts her off again. “You’re going to feel fantastic. Come on call him”Waverly types out Perry’s number, her finger reluctantly hovering above the call button while an impatient Nicole is silently encouraging her. Seeing that Waverly is taking forever she pulls the phone out of her hand and presses the call button herself holding it up against her ear. “It’s ringing”.-“Please Nicole………. Cut the call” Waverly pleads.Nicole however is having none of it “Shhhhhh, wait it’s still ringing”-“hello” she can hear Perry voice from the other side.-“Hey Perry, just hold on for a second yeah” She briefly greets him before handing the phone back to Waverly “Come on just go for it” she whispers.Waverly looks at the phone wide eyed, like it’s going to blow up in her hands any moment while Nicole is whispering encouraging words to boost her confidence “Just do it. Come on”.-“Hello” Waverly’s voice comes out way higher than normal. Clearing her throat she starts over. “Perry, Hi” she says full of nervous energy.-“Waverly? Hi and was.. was that Nicole Haught I heard earlier”? He asks trying not to sound very curious.-“Ye.. yeah” she stammers as Nicole eggs her on further “Actually, I…..what I wanted to say was….”-“Don’t overthink this…..just let it flow” Nicole sounds way too excited for Waverly’s liking.
-“Waverly are you there”?
-“Yes……..you…you shit-ticket” she starts in a quiet unsure voice.-“What”? She can hear him splutter and that boosts her confidence a little.-“You Jerk” she swears, sounding much more sure of herself. “What were you expecting you asshole” She screams “That I would cry and pine over you forever? Well let me tell you that I’m DONE with you” a subtle smile graces her lips as Perry fumbles for words on the other end. “I’m no cacti expert but I should have seen you for the PRICK you are. And the best part of our relationship is that it doesn’t exist. So FUCK YOU!!!” she bellows before abruptly disconnecting the phone not waiting for him to respond. She’s breathing heavily and she’s afraid her heart might give up given how fast it’s beating. And all Nicole can do is stare at her mouth hanging open, eyes full of pride. “How do you feel”? She asks with a toothy grin, eager to know.-“Well, I feel good” she says trying to comprehend what just happened. “Like really really good” she adds with a watery chuckle and this time around Nicole finally, finally sees a faint little spark in those beautiful hazel eyes of hers. It’s not everything but it’s definitely something.-“Yess!!” she exclaims pumping her fist. “I told you” she says unable to wipe the smug dimply smile off of her face.Waverly is looking up at her with a grateful smile. However there is something else in that look Nicole doesn’t recognize and wants to ask her if everything is okay but she is interrupted by Waverly’s sweet voice.-“Thank you Nicole” she says appreciatively and Nicole understands it’s not just for what happened a few seconds ago.-“Waves, you don’t hav……..ufff” before she can even finish her sentence, Waverly has flung herself onto her with such force, it knocks the wind out of her. She struggles to steady herself as she’s involuntarily pushed back a few paces flopping straight on to the edge of the bed. Thankfully she manages to remain seated, one hand fixed to the mattress while the other is wrapped tightly around Waverly’s waist, who is practically straddling Nicole at this point. Her arms are wound around Nicole’s shoulders while her face is buried in her neck.Nicole is the definition of gay panic right now. Her heart is racing a million miles per hour. She can’t even begin to describe how right this feels, how good it feels having Waverly this close to her. She’d been wanting to hold her ever since she’d seen her earlier that day. Eyes shut, she’s loses herself in the sweet coconut-y smell of her shampoo, breathing it in. She can’t help but move her hand that’s resting on the mattress and wrap it around the brunette’s back giving her a gentle squeeze. Little goose bumps start to form on her body as Waverly’s soft warm breath tickles her neck. She was going to savor this moment for as long as Waverly would let her.Waverly on the other hand hopes to convey everything that can’t be said into this hug. She wants Nicole know how thankful she is for everything she has done for her. For always being there, for making her smile and most importantly not giving up on her despite all the attempts Waverly had made to push her away. Hugging Nicole feels like being wrapped up in a warm blanket on a cold winter’s night. No one besides her family had treated her this way and she is immensely grateful. She couldn’t comprehend how a simple hug could make her feel so connected to this person. The walls she’d built around herself were slowly being taken down brick by brick. She could feel herself relax, her anxiety slowly ebbing away. She felt vulnerable but not in an unsafe way. And this feeling of being exposed without fear, to feel alive again, grounded her to reality. And she knew that in that moment everything would be okay, even if only for a moment. She’s so comfortable in Nicole’s arms she doesn’t realize the compromising position they both are in, until she feels the taller woman give her a gentle squeeze. Suddenly hyper aware that she’s sitting on Nicole’s lap, she pulls away slightly, the atmosphere thick with mixed emotions. She quickly Untangles herself completely from the redhead arms, steadying herself as she steps back trying to put some distance between them. ‘What just happened here’? She asks herself, avoiding eye contact with the woman sitting stiffly in front of her. Mind still foggy she’s unable to make sense of all those feelings that’s just coursed through her while being hugged by the kindest, most amazing, insanely beautiful person she’d ever met. ‘Whoa. Stop it right there’ she mentally scolds herself. ‘God what’s happening? Where is all this coming from’? She frowns.Sensing the brunette’s discomfort, Nicole immediately tries to pacify her “Hey, it’s all good” she blurts out nervously, moving from the bed to stand in front of the petite woman, praying she hadn’t made the woman feel uncomfortable. “Stuff happens. Friends hug all the time” she shrugs, feeling none of the coolness she was trying to portray for Waverly’s benefit.‘Friends, why doesn’t that word sit right all of a sudden? Why can I feel things changing around me? Everything is moving too fast. God could everyone just stand still for one freakin’ minute’? Caught up in her internal monologue Waverly doesn’t realize she’s been silent for a bit. Finally daring to look at Nicole she finds apologetic warm brown eyes staring at her nervously. She can’t however find the courage to quell Nicole’s nerves in return.-“Maybe I should book that other room” Nicole murmurs unable to bear the silence.-“No, please. I don’t want to be alone” Waverly pleadsNicole’s gaze immediately softens “Then you won’t be”? She says giving her a kind smile. “Oh man I’m starving. How about we check what else is hiding under those cloches….hmmm? Or are you just happy with that soup of yours? She asks moving towards the bedside table, taking a peek at the rest of the food.Waverly is grateful for the sudden change in subject and is once again blown away by Nicole’s thoughtfulness. Every time she thinks she can’t top this, the redhead goes on and does something that makes Waverly wonder what she’s ever done to deserve a person like Nicole Haught standing by her side.-“oh before I forget, we are going sightseeing tomorrow. You better show me the best spots” Nicole hums between mouthfuls and Waverly can’t help but look on fondly at the woman who is busy digging into some veggie fried rice. ******************************** Banff is an incredible town with breath-taking vistas in every direction. Waverly had suggested they visit the summit of Sulphur Mountain for a jaw dropping mountaintop experience at an elevation of 7486 feet. So after a quick breakfast at the Hotel the next morning, Nicole had driven them to the base of the summit where they were to take the Banff gondola to the top.The eight minute journey to the summit in the four passenger gondola cabin was worth every second. They'd thoroughly enjoyed the phenomenal views of the surrounding valleys. Once on top they had taken a stroll on this magical 1km boardwalk trail offering them eye popping mountaintop views finally leading them to Sanson Peak and Sulphur Mountain Cosmic Ray Station National Historic Site. The hike was easy to do despite the cold weather. They had walked back to the summit facility and warmed up by the outdoor fire pits on the rooftop deck followed by a delicious lunch at one of their restaurants enjoying further scenic views.Exhausted but completely content they took the gondola for their ride back to the base.-“Wow, I don’t think I’ll ever tire of saying how breath-taking the view is” Waverly exhales, admiring the site below, through the glass of their gondola.-“Yeah, it truly is” Nicole replies in a husky voice, her eyes fixed on Waverly. Waverly instinctively turns to look at Nicole who is seated opposite her and catches her staring. And there it is, that look. The same look she gave her when she dropped her outside the museum in Jasper. The same look she’s been giving her these past 24 hours.Nicole’s face flushes when she realizes she’s been caught staring and quickly looks away from Waverly pretending to take in the scenic views outside. After a few seconds she tries to steal a quick glance but is caught again by a very amused Waverly.-“What”? Nicole asks flustered. She isn’t as subtle as she thinks she is and Waverly has had a lot of time to think things through, revisit old memories and grasp what she’d missed earlier. Yet she’s still confused and second guessing her feeling for Nicole based on her past fears and understands she will have to address those sooner than later, but for now she’s going to enjoy rattling the already flustered redhead even further.-“You like me don’t you”? She asks with a mischievous smirk.Nicole coughs, suddenly choking on her own saliva, her eyes going wide with surprise at Waverly’s brazenness. Taking a couple of seconds to calm her racing heart she decides to be brave herself. What does she have to lose anyway? “I do” she admits with a softest smile, eyes never leaving Waverly’s “So much”.And even though Waverly knew the answer, she wasn’t prepared for the shock waves that surged through her body at the admission. If she was being honest with herself she wasn’t expecting Nicole to be so open about her feelings. But now that she has, she doesn’t know what to say or do? She doesn’t want to lead Nicole on until she’s absolutely sure herself.-“Waverly” Nicole calls to gets her attention “I would never ask you to be someone you’re not. You have nothing to worry about. Okay”? The last thing she wants is for Waverly to feel uncomfortable in her presence. Seeing Waverly react the way she did last night, it was very obvious she saw Nicole as just a friend. Besides she would never force or pressurize Waverly to do something she didn’t want to.Waverly is completely in awe of this woman sitting in front of her. How could someone be so selfless and giving without expecting anything in return?“Okay”? Nicole stresses again giving Waverly an assuring smile.-“hmmhmm” Waverly nods back, silently hoping she’d have a definite answer for Nicole soon. *************************** They drive back to the hotel in comfortable silence. Parking the Jeep at the Hotel’s parking lot they make their way toward the main entrance and step inside the lobby. They walk towards the elevators, when all of a sudden Waverly lets out a loud gasp.Nicole looks at her with concern. Following her line of gaze she is shocked to see none other than Perry Crofte hurrying towards them.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
-“Waverly can I talk you”? Perry asks sounding desperate.Waverly is too numb from shock to say anything. She’d been pining over him for so long that seeing him in person seems unreal.Nicole just stands there awkwardly, like a fish out of water.-“There’s nothing left to talk, Perry” Waverly scowls not prepared to deal with him right now.-“Please Waverly, I just need two minutes of your time……. Please” he begs not taking no for an answer.Waverly turns to look at Nicole who gives her a reassuring smile. Then walks away without a word giving them some privacy, leaving Waverly staring behind her.-“Could we go somewhere a bit more private”? Perry asks a bit more hopeful.-“I don’t want to talk to you Perry” She says firmly, unwillingly tearing her eyes away from the retreating redhead to give him a glare.-“Please give me another chance” he tries again.-“Leave me alone, please”-“Waverly I made a mistake, alright. I wasn’t ready” he tries yet again. “And If I’m being honest with myself I never really stopped thinking about you. When you showed up at the museum all those months ago without warning, I couldn’t handle it. I was just too afraid to commit”.-“You threw me out of your life, like I was some trash. You left me alone and heartbroken for nine whole months. If not for Chrissy and now Nicole, I don’t know how I’d have made it. So NO. You can’t just waltz back into my life and say you made a mistake. It’s not that easy.” How dare he, she fumes.-“I know it’s not. And I also know you’ve been through a lot but I would like a chance to make things better. Please. I’ll accompany you to your home too so I can meet your family. I’ll talk to them and make everything right. **************************** Nicole is out on the terrace attached to their suite which offers spectacular Bow Valley views. Perry’s sudden appearance had brought about a sense of insecurity and dread in her, which she knows is stupid but she can’t help what she feels. And no matter how much it hurt, Waverly didn’t belong to her. Waverly didn’t belong to anyone; period. She was her own person and could choose to be with anyone she wanted. And if she chose to give Perry a second chance she would support her hundred percent. ‘God why does it have to hurt this much’ She ponders on the verge of tears. The sound of approaching footsteps pulls her out of her thoughts. She composes herself, not wanting to break down in front of the brunette. It’s not Waverly’s fault that she fell hopelessly in love with someone who can’t love her back. She exhales deeply bracing herself to face Waverly.-“I don’t get it” she hears Waverly grumbling as she steps onto the terrace and turns around to face her. “Why did he have to come back? Why now when things are finally starting to get better”? She looks at Nicole with questioning eyes. “I don’t think I can do this. It’s just too late”.-“You know something Waves, my parents were always shitty towards me. The neglect messed me up quite a bit and for the longest time I thought maybe I was the problem. But in fact they were miserable because they never really loved each other. They made a great team at work and so decided to stay together just to keep up appearances but they missed their chance at happiness because they refused to be true to themselves. Had they followed their heart maybe things could have been different”. Nicole stops to take deep breath before going on “Follow your heart Waverly, just like you always do. Your heart will never lead you astray”-“But Nicole……..”-“Waves” Nicole cuts in “If you’re with the right person they could help you move past these painful nine months. And if Perry wants to be that person then maybe you should give him a chance”. She has no idea how she found the strength to say those words without falling apart in front of the woman she had come to love with her whole heart and soul.-“Really Nicole”? Waverly asks her mind full of doubts and uncertainties “I can’t believe you are siding with him” she pouts not able to comprehend why Nicole was pushing her towards Perry”-“Don’t you get it? I’m siding with you too, because you and Perry are on the same side” Nicole gives her a kind smile. “It’s a no-brainer Waverly. People are only truly happy when they are with the one they love. You love Perry. The universe seems to be routing for you too and finally giving you what you’ve REALLY wanted”.-“What about you”? Waverly whispers her eyes pooling with unshed tears as sad brown eyes look back at her. Nicole seems a little taken aback by Waverly’s question but recovers quickly a small mischievous smirk appearing on her lips.-“Once you’re married, you can have your first extra-marital fling with me. It’s a win-win” She jokes playfully wriggling her eyebrows.-"It's a done deal" Waverly lets out a watery chuckle despite the ache in her heart before voicing her concerns “But Nicole this doesn’t feel right. I’m not sure about this”-“Waves, how would you know if you don’t give him another chance? I'm not saying you take him back right away, but at least hear him out" she tries to reason with her. "Where is he anyway"? She asks curiously.-“I left him down in the lobby” Waverly shrugs.-“Alright. You go talk to him while I call Curtis and let him know that I’m bringing you home” she smiles sweetly.-“Gosh, Nicole how am I going to face them”? Waverly asks anxiously, having avoided this conversation until now.Unable to stop herself, Nicole places her hand lightly on Waverly’s cheek as she replies “Waverly you have the most wonderful people to call family, who love and care for you deeply. They’ve been so worried about you. All they want is for you to be happy and safe. Just be honest with them and everything will be okay”Closing her eyes, Waverly leans into her soothing touch and even though Nicole’s heart yearns to be close, her brain screams at her to keep a distance. She quickly but gently pulls away, afraid she might end up doing something stupid.-“Come on, let’s go. If we leave in some time we can reach Purgatory before sunset” ********************* Stepping out of the elevator, Nicole and Waverly make their way towards Perry who is anxiously waiting in the sitting area by the entrance. Half way through Waverly hesitates, her steps falter. Nicole however, gives her an encouraging nudge. “You carry on, I’ll see you guys in a bit” She gives Waverly a wide smile and a nod towards Perry before turning around and exiting the hotel. She hurries to the parking lot and gets into her Jeep. The pain of seeing Waverly with someone else is unbearable. Powerless to hold it together any longer she lets go. Once the first tear rolls down, the rest follow, her chest heaving with an onslaught of sobs. She feels like she’s drowning and her lungs scream for oxygen while she clings on to the steering wheel like her life depends on it.After what feels like ages her tears start to slowly subside and her breathing gradually goes to normal. Feeling a little lighter she wipes away at her face with the back of her hand. ‘Alright Nicole just pull your shit together. You have work to do’ she mentally kicks herself as she takes out her phone and dials Curtis’s number.-“Nicole, please tell me you are bringing her home” Curtis blurts out as soon as he answers the call, not bothering with greetings.-“I am bringing her home Curtis” Nicole confirms, trying her best not to sound like someone who just had an emotional breakdown. We should be there in a couple of hours.-“Okay, see you guys soon. We are waiting”. ******************** As they approached the Earp homestead, Nicole can feel the nervous energy bouncing off of Waverly. She keeps glancing at the hazel eyed woman through the rear view mirror every few seconds making sure she's alright. A small worry wrinkle has started to form on her forehead and she keeps nibbling on her bottom lip. Perry on the other hand looks quite calm and confident sitting beside her on the passenger seat for someone who is going to meet his girlfriend’s family for the first time.No sooner does she pulls up to the front of the house, the front door shoots open and within a matter of seconds Wynonna is by the Jeep opening the back door and pulling Waverly out, enveloping her in a tight bear hug. No words are spoken as Alice, Curtis and Gus, all join them for a group hug unable to keep their tears at bay.Curtis is the first to notice them. Planting a soft kiss to Waverly’s forehead he approaches the Jeep as Nicole and Perry exit the vehicle. Nicole is taken by complete surprise as he pulls her into a tight hug patting her on her back. “Thank you kid. We are forever indebted to you” he says as he pulls away a grateful look in his eyes. Then turning to Perry he asks “I’m sorry but I don’t think we’ve met before, I’m Curtis, Waverly’s Uncle” he introduces himself holding out his hand, giving Perry a curious look.-“I’m Perry Crofte, Waverly’s boyfriend” he greets back, giving Curtis’s hand a firm shake and Nicole watches his expression change from curiosity to utter confusion. His eyes flit between Nicole and Perry expecting some clarification.Nicole is absolutely mad at Perry but doesn’t react. It’s Waverly’s story to tell and he had no right to take that away from her. Thankfully it was only Curtis who heard him as the others were already making their way towards the house.-“Curtis, I think the best person to explain would be Waverly” Nicole answers as they too walk towards the house.Alice is the only one hanging around on the front porch no doubt waiting to meet her favorite redhead. She welcomes Nicole with a shy smile and an adorable little wave batting her eyelashes. Nicole’s heart melts as she waves back giving her a dimply smile.-“I think I’ll hang out with my best friend here for a bit” She says as Curtis holds the front door open for them to enter. Curtis nods in acknowledgement as he and Perry step inside to join the others.“What say Alice? Wanna tell me what you’ve been up to since I last saw you”? She asks kindly as she sits down on the top most step of the porch. Alice nods enthusiastically as she joins her, immediately chatting away about anything and everything while Nicole looks at her fondly. ************************** Alice’s chatter has long stopped as she and Nicole are completely lost in one of the most beautiful displays of color in front of them. Their eyes are focused on the orange, yellow, red and grey colors of the sun that is gradually disappearing behind the clump of pine trees, leaving behind pastel scattered rays.A sense of calm and contentment washes over Nicole as she witnesses one of nature’s most beautiful moments. Waverly is back home, happy and safe, amongst people who love her. That was worth all of the heartbreaks in the world. And it was now time for her to go back to her own world and continue doing what she’s started nine month ago.The opening of the front door snaps her out of her thoughts as Gus, Curtis and Perry step out onto the porch. Perry appears to be quite pleased with himself and Nicole presumes everything went well in there. Gus and Curtis though have an unreadable expression on their faces and the way they are eyeing Perry, doesn’t quite feel they are as impressed as he seems to think. It’s not for Nicole to break her head over anyway. As long as Waverly is happy, she’s sure her family will support her willingly. Nicole rises to her feet as the three approach her. Giving her a courteous nod, Perry makes his way down the steps and stands by Curtis’s truck waiting for the older couple to join him.-“Alice, honey why don’t you go on inside and help your Mama and Auntie set up the dinner table? Nicole will join you in a bit” Gus instructs her.“Yeah sure” she responds as she jumps up and runs inside, knowing too well arguing with the grey headed matriarch will get her nowhere.-“Nicole” Gus addresses her next. “I don’t have enough words to express how thankful we are to you. If not for you we don’t know if we’d ever see our angel again” she thanks her eyes full of gratitude and Curtis nods in agreement patting her arm before giving it a gentle squeeze.-“Please, think nothing of it. I’m just really glad I was able to help” she replies, politely accepting their thanks.-“She and Perry have a lot to sort out” Curtis frowns giving Perry a disapproving look. “We definitely aren’t happy with the way he treated her. But having said that Waverly is an adult and can make her own decisions and if she is willing to forgive him, then so are we” -“He will be staying with us in the meantime” Gus adds “There isn’t enough room here for everyone.-“I don’t think that will be necessary” Nicole chimes in, not wanting to be the cause of any inconvenience. “In fact I was thinking of leaving right away. I’m done here anyway, I mean now that Waverly is back home. I can put up in a hotel for the night in Calgary before making my way home to Toronto”. But Gus and Curtis are having none of it “Absolutely not” they both cut in at once. “You are staying here kid” Gus orders her firmly. “Besides, Wynonna wouldn’t want him staying in this house. At least not until she can fully trust him” She lets out sigh. “Anyway we’d better get going” she says as she and Curtis make their way towards their truck and Perry. “Don’t stay out in the cold for too long” Nicole hears Gus shout back as they all get in the truck and drive away.Suddenly all alone she considers going inside, however is left feeling a little out of place. After giving it a brief thought she decides against it and flops back down on the steps looking out in to the vast expanse of dense pine forests. The sound of someone clearing their throat makes her jump. Turning around quickly she expects to see Waverly, however, is surprised to find Wynonna awkwardly standing behind her with a bottle of beer in each hand.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
-“Hey” Wynonna greets her casually.-“Hey Wynonna” Nicole replies trying to keep the nervousness out of her voice.-“Can I”? She asks pointing towards the space next to Nicole. She doesn’t sound upset and Nicole takes it as a good sign.-“Of course” Nicole replies feeling a wee bit relaxed as Wynonna plops down beside her.-“I come bearing apology beers” she mumbles with a nervous chuckle offering her one of the bottles.-“I could definitely do with some beer” Nicole responds accepting it “but you’ve got nothing to apologize for” She adds without hesitation.-“Yes I do and I’m really sorry” Wynonna apologizes “Haught, Waverly is my whole heart and I just wanted her to…….” She tears up unable to speak further.-“You wanted to make sure she was safe, I know” Nicole quickly tries to comfort her. “You were just trying to protect her. And you never have to apologize for that. At least not to me”-“Because you were doing the same” Wynonna states without an ounce of doubt and Nicole eyes her with confusion. “Protecting her” she says as she takes a long swig of her beer and Nicole just casually shrugs it off like it’s not a big deal.-“Why didn’t you say anything, back at your office”? She asks after few moments of silence.-“Wynonna it wasn’t my story to tell, and since you came looking for me, I figured you guys didn’t know about Perry yet. She wanted to tell you herself”.-“She didn’t though” there’s a slight trace of hurt in her voice. “I mean she told you” she scoffs-“I am sorry Wynonna. I…..” Nicole fumbles for words.-“It’s not on you red” she says with a frown “If at all, it’s on me. At least she had someone in her corner she could trust. So thank you …….for being that person”.-“Wynonna, please talk to her” Nicole pleads but Wynonna ignores her.-“I mean if she can’t even approach me, talk to me, then I’m definitely doing it wrong. I have been so focused playing an overprotective big sister, I never really stopped to notice anything else. I really fucked up” she grimaces like it physically hurt to say it but recovers quickly.-“I really think you should be talking to her about this”? Nicole reiterates.-“I know and I will. But what about you”? She asks raising an eyebrow.-“What do you mean” Nicole looks at her in utter confusion.-“When are you going to get your head out of your ass and tell her you love her”?Nicole chooses just that moment to take a swig out of her bottle and regrets it instantly. She chokes and coughs and splutters trying to catch her breath while Wynonna gives her an amused smile. Then taking pity on her she lightly pats her back a couple of times.-“Wynonna …. Its… it’s not what… what you think” she stutters, breathing heavily.-“Save your breath ginger spice” Wynonna cuts her short. “You literally need it” she chuckles as Nicole tries her best to avoid eye contact.-“I may be a little oblivious at times but I’m not blind. Besides you aren’t that subtle. Those heart eyes you keep making whenever Waverly is around makes me want to barf”-“I don’t make heart eyes” Nicole huffs defiantly with a pout.-“I’m pretty sure you invented them” Wynonna replies without missing a beat. “Look anyone who hurts my baby sister is a dick in my book. That asshole doesn’t deserve to breathe the same air as her.”-“Wynonna, is anyone ever going to be good enough for her”? Nicole asks giving her a known smile.-“Touché Haught, touché” Wynonna smiles back. “But having said that I would route for you any day. I mean no one is ever going to be perfect for her in my eyes, but if it has to be someone, it should be you”.Nicole is floored by this admission and fights hard not to tear up and make a fool of herself in front of Waverly’s older sister. She is at a total loss of words.-“Moreover, I’m never going to trust him. Ever. Even if she decides to give him another chance, which she hasn’t by the way. Just so you know. I not sure what exactly is going on in that big brain of hers but she isn’t making this easy for him”.Nicole does a double take at this but doesn’t want to dwell too deep into it. She knows that holding on to hope would only hurt her “Waverly should be with the one she loves. And she loves Perry”-“Agree to disagree. She should be with someone who loves her. Don’t you see it Nicole”? Wynonna asks frustrated. “She’s been pining over him for the last nine months. If she wanted to get back together wouldn’t she have jumped in the moment he showed up?”-“Wynonna she can take all the time she needs. This is a life changing decision and she’s already been hurt before”. Nicole finally breaks her silence.-“Exactly my point red. She needs someone who won’t run when life gets tough or abandon her when they can’t handle it. But you on the other have more than proved yourself worthy of her. You’re always there for her. You made sure she safely got to wherever she wanted to be, not once, not twice but three times. You went out of your way to bring her back to us” she says with a seriousness that’s new to her “Fuck you are like a walking bumper sticker….. and rich. Waverly should totally be hanging out with you” She adds with a smirk.-“I agree” Nicole gives a small sad smile.-“Then why are you being such a pussy. Just go kiss the day lights out of her” Wynonna huffs tired of this back and forth.-“Wynonna it’s not up to me”. Nicole sounds annoyed. “Besides she already knows” she mumbles further in a quiet voice.-“What? What do you mean she already knows”?Exhaling deeply Nicole answers “She asked me earlier today, in Banff, if I had feelings for her”.-“And what did you say”? Asks Wynonna surprised by this new revelation.-“I told her the truth. But then she went all quiet and didn’t say anything back and I panicked. She was already going through so much I didn’t want to add to that. I didn’t want her to think I was taking advantage of her situation, so I gave her an out. I told her she shouldn’t worry about it, that I didn’t expect anything in return”. Nicole rambles while a very stunned Wynonna stares at her with disbelief.-“Fuck I can’t believe I have to deal with a bunch of idiots”. ******************* Wynonna and Alice had long retreated to their respective bedrooms soon after dinner, leaving Nicole and Waverly to clear the table. Standing by the kitchen sink Waverly is silently doing the dishes while Nicole helps dry them. This is first time since their return from Banff that the redhead finds herself in the company of the brunette without anyone else being present. The silence isn’t uncomfortable but Nicole is dying to know what’s going on in that big beautiful brain of hers.Placing the last dish on the rack she turns slightly to face Waverly who is wiping her hands to a kitchen towel “How are things with Perry” she asks casually without sounding too intrusive.-“Honestly, I don’t know” she says looking up at Nicole with wide eyes. “We haven’t really talked talked” she sighs “More like he’s talking and I’m listening. He’s taking me out for breakfast tomorrow. And I’m dreading it. Nicole conversations with him used to be so easy. Everything is different now and I am plagued with this constant sense of apprehension” she rambles her hands flailing. “Everything feels wrong” she adds slightly out of breadth.-“Woah… breathe Waves” Nicole places her hands gently on her shoulders trying to calm her down. “As long as you believe it in your heart, you can’t go wrong”.-“I sort of feel like I’m, you know, running towards a cliff, terrified of jumping, but……….”-“When it’s right you don’t think about the cliff because you’re sure when you reach the edge, you’ll fly” Nicole cuts in trying to ease her anxiety. “Waves you are the smartest person I know, you’ll figure it out”. *********************** -“Baby girl, you’re going to wear out the bottom of your socks with all that pacing” Wynonna groans making Waverly jump and stop immediately. It was way past midnight and Waverly was having a hard time sleeping so she had resorted to well, pacing.-“Sorry Nonna” she apologizes sheepishly “I didn’t mean to wake you up. You go back to sleep. I think I’ll just go make myself some tea” she says, quickly moving towards the bedroom door”. -“Is this about Nicole”? Wynonna asks as she sits up in bed, hitting the nail directly on the head, stopping Waverly in her tracks.-“What… what do you mean”? She stammers nervously turning around to face her sister.-“Waverly talk to me” Wynonna’s voice is filled with concern, prompting Waverly to hesitantly walk across the room and sit on the edge of the bed. “Look I know you’ve been hesitant to talk to me”-“Wy… it's not that” Waverly tries to chime in.-“Baby girl I’m not finished. This talk is long overdue anyway”. She says firmly but not unkindly. “I know I haven’t been that ideal sister you deserve. Had I been more respectful of your boundaries, you wouldn’t have had to spend all those months struggling by yourself. I’m sorry I made it so difficult for you to approach me. But I promise going forward I’m going to try my hardest to treat you like an adult and not be as overbearing. But please don’t shut me out” Wynonna whispers those last bits with tears streaming down her face.-“Thank you Nonna, you’re the best big sister ever and I’ll always want you to lookout for me. I just wanted you to trust me enough to know that I can take care of myself. And I’m sorry too. I should have told you about Perry but I was just worried you wouldn’t approve and that you would scare him away”. Waverly wipes away her own tears.-“Can I ask you something”? Wynonna asks a little hesitant but Waverly nods. “Do you really want to be with him? I mean, I can see that you’re struggling to make decisions. But baby girl you know you’re not obligated to take him back right?-“Wynonna I loved him”-“Exactly my point. Loved. Past tense. And who’s to say he won’t pull this shit again”?Waverly simply shrugs.-“Besides he can’t compete with Nicole’s heart eyes” Wynonna says matter of factly as Waverly stares at her eyes wide as saucers.-“Did she say something to you” She asks after a beat of silence.-“Well, yes and no” Wynonna replies sheepishly. “I mean I kind of forced her to admit” she shrugs “without the use of Violence” she adds quickly after receiving a death glare from the feisty brunette “jeez give me a break”-“Then why is she pushing me away and towards Perry” Waverly asks with a frown “It’s so damn confusing. One moment she admits to having feelings for me but as soon as Perry shows up she kinda clamps up and suggests I give him a second chance”.-“Does she even know that her feeling are being reciprocated? Have you once told her you love her back”?-“No…… I.. I mean.. I…” she stutters and is at a complete loss for words as realization strikes.-“For such a smart person you can be really be dumb sometimes”-“It doesn't matter now Wynonna, it’s too late. Look at me I’m such a mess, why would she want to be with someone like me”? Waverly sounds completely dejected.-“I have eyes baby girl. Nicole loves you” Wynonna reassures her. “And it’s never too late to tell someone you love them” she adds hoping at least one of them would stop being an idiot and sweep the other off their feet.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Waverly enters the kitchen and flops down on the dining chair. She was in a real mood. After her talk with Wynonna late last night, she had finally managed to sleep in the early hours of the morning only to be woken up by her phone going off nonstop. It was Perry, letting her know that Curtis was dropping him off at the homestead in some time.-“What crawled up your butt and died”? Wynonna teases as she places a mug of hot tea and a plate of vegan pancakes in front of Waverly before pulling up a chair and sitting beside her.-“Thanks Wy” she mumbles, carefully taking a sip. “Perry called. He’s wants us to go out for breakfast” she adds with frustration.-“Well you don’t seem too thrilled”-“Is Nicole up yet? And Alice”? Waverly quickly tries to deflect.-“Nice deflection baby sis. But to answer your question, they both are up, well fed and out on the front porch no doubt discussing Little Mermaid” she rolls her eyes. “Let me tell you, that girl of yours has the patience of a saint” she continues with a slight note of admiration in her voice-“She’s not my girl Wynonna” Waverly snaps at her.-“Not yet, and she’ll never be if you don’t tell how you feel” Wynonna snaps right back “Nicole is leaving” she hesitantly throws it at her “She was just waiting for you to wake up”.Waverly head snaps up at this “Nicole is leaving” she repeats her voice void of emotion, her eyes distant and Wynonna’s heart aches seeing her once bubbly cheerful sister, become an insecure, self-doubting mess right in front of her eyes. ‘Fuck you Perry’ she mentally curses him and if not for the promise she’d made to Waverly, she would have chased him with Peacemaker and kicked his sorry ass back to Jasper.-“It’s not too late baby girl” she tries to assure her.-“I’m scared Wynonna”.-“It’s okay to be scared, but don’t let your past experiences control your future”.-But what if she’s changed her mind? What if she doesn’t want me anymore? I … I don’t think I could take another rejection” She rambles up eyes filled with panic.-“Waverly she named a fucking business venture after you. It’s out there for the whole world to see". She doesn’t want to sound mad but this back and forth is getting a little too annoying, however she continues as Waverly stares at her dumbly clearly unaware of this particular piece of information.-“Baby girl don’t let some prick like Perry ruin this for you. Remember that some of the best things in life are the surprises it throws us. About what we want. WHO we want. You’ve always been an honest kid. Don’t stop now” she says placing a firm kiss to her forehead.Exhaling deeply, she giver her sister an unsure nod before rising from her chair and slowly making her way towards the front door.-“Please could you send Alice in. I don’t want you two making out in front of my kid” she teases with a cackle and Waverly curses her sister for putting that image into head. How would she ever function after that? ********************* -“Looks like someone’s found their favorite spot” Waverly chuckles nervously, her heart racing as she steps out onto the porch hoping Nicole wouldn’t notice her inner turmoil.Nicole and Alice are sitting on the porch steps whispering and giggling like two best friends as she tries to unsuccessfully braid one of Alice’s dolls hair.-“The view is magnificent, of course it’s my favorite spot” she respond looking up at the brunette as she joins them and settles down near Alice.-“Sweetie, Mama wants you inside”-“Are you sure Aunt Wavy”? Alice asks suspiciously while Nicole tries to suppress her laugh.-“I promise baby girl” she assures her kindly.-“Don’t leave without saying goodbye” Alice pouts turning to face Nicole before jumping up from her spot. She’s gone before the redhead can even come up with a response leaving her to stare behind her sadly, thinking how much she was going to miss this sweet adorable kid.-“So you’re really leaving”? Waverly’s quiet voice breaks Nicole’s thoughts and she focuses her site back on the smaller woman who is staring straight ahead, seemingly anxious, picking her fingers and nibbling on her lips but Nicole takes it as first date jitters with her ex post their breakup and doesn’t comment on it and instead answers her question.-“Yeah, I’m leaving” she confirms with her sweet smile that fails to reach her warm brown eyes.-“You know she won’t let you leave so easily right”? Waverly says pointing her thumb back towards the house.-“Yeah. I’m going to miss her so much”-“Just her”? Waverly dares to ask still not looking at the woman sitting beside her-“Well, I’m going to miss Wynonna, Gus and Curtis too aaand how can I forget my favorite….. spot” she says patting the step she’s sitting on, a cheeky smile adorning her face which falters as soon as she receives a glare from feisty brunette “Of course I’ll miss you too Waves” she quickly pacifies her. “How could I not? You are my best friend. But please don’t tell Alice I said that” she adds with a soft smile.‘Friend’ - Waverly’s heart aches as she hears that word ease out of Nicole’s mouth. And she knows by the concern etched on the redhead’s face that the hurt is reflecting through her eyes. She had learnt earlier on that Nicole is quite receptive. Intense brown eyes filled with a mix of worry and adoration are watching her attentively. Her breath catches in her throat and her heart does a little dance. Had it been anyone else she would have looked away feeling uncomfortable. But with Nicole, she’s drawn in even closer, wanting more. Nicole always made her feel completely seen, she let her strip back to bare, pretenses gone, flaws and vulnerabilities on full show. It was beautiful yet not easy. She knows that this type of connection needed her to be fully open, the armor that surrounded her needed to soften and the walls she’d built needed to fall to the ground. And she is finally ready “Nicole, I….”-“Hey babe” Perry calls out to Waverly from a far, as he walks up the driveway towards the house and the moment is lost. Both Waverly and Nicole are forced back to reality.-“I’d better go say bye to Alice and Wynonna” Nicole blurts out not wanting to be a third wheel as she pushes herself up to her feet. “Good Bye Waverly” and she’s gone before Waverly can even process what’s happening, leaving her gaping at Nicole’s disappearing form behind the front door as it closes with a soft click.‘What the hell just happened’ Waverly blinks rapidly trying to clear her head. She was so close to confessing her feelings. A total sense of dread overcomes her. She can feel her heart racing and her breathing turns shallow. ‘NO’ she screams internally. She can’t let Nicole go. She won’t let Nicole go, not without telling her. She’s so lost in her thoughts she doesn’t notice Perry walk up to her. She can barely register him telling her to get ready and something about taking her Jeep.-“Perry I have to go. I’ll talk to you later” she exclaims in hurry before taking off. Full throttle. ******************** Now it’s Perry’s turn to gawk as Waverly barges inside the house barely avoiding Wynonna who jumps out of the way, cursing.-“What the fuck bab…….” But stops when she notices Waverly frantically looking around the living room and kitchen.-“Where’s Nicole”? She asks panting heavily, eyes wild with panic.-“Hey calm down, Alice dragged her to……..” but Waverly doesn’t need to hear further. She knows where they are and dashes towards the back of the house and out the door running towards the lake.A wave of calm washes over her as she hears the familiar sound of giggles and laughter. She never wants to stop hearing that laugh she thinks as she stops a few feet away from the maple tree completely out of breadth. Nicole stops pushing the tire swing the moment she see the brunette and hurries towards her.-“Waverly is everything alright”? She asks with a frown, her eyes flitting between Waverly and Perry who she can see at a distance, hurrying towards them.-“Is that him”? Waverly breathes out-“Who”? Asks Nicole dumbly, immediately feeling a sense of déjà vu.-“Perry”-“Yeah” Nicole confirms tilting her head slightly and looking over Waverly’s shoulder.-“Is he coming this way” Waverly asks again.-“Yes…. But Waverly………”she doesn’t get to finish her sentence because Waverly Earp has thrown herself into Nicole’s arms, enveloping her into a tight hug, sobbing bitterly. Her hands instinctively wrap themselves around the smaller woman’s back, momentarily losing herself in the familiar sweet scents of her shampoo and perfume, shrouding her already foggy mind. She can see Perry in her peripheral vision, frozen in his tracks and feels a slight pang of guilt but doesn’t have the time to dwell on it. Waverly needs her right now. She remembers finding her a little anxious and lost earlier but had assumed it was just nerves, but clearly something else was going on here so she tries to focus on the sobbing brunette in her arms, gently rubbing her back and whispering words of comfort. As her tears subside, Waverly slowly pulls away, but not entirely, moving her hands from the back of Nicole’s neck, resting them on her chest. “I wanted to thank you” she says her voice gruff and cracking from all crying as Nicole stares at her mouth slightly open. “For pushing me to give Perry a second chance. Without it I never would have realized what I REALLY wanted. So here I am Nicole. I’ve followed my heart, and it led me straight to you” and not wanting to wait a second longer she crashes her lips onto Nicole’s. Neither of them hear Alice squeal with delight and then run home to tell her Mama what she’d just witnessed. Nor are they aware that a very distraught and stunned Perry is walking away from them having finally accepted that he and Waverly were never meant to be. Nicole cannot believe what’s happening. Waverly Earp is kissing her and kissing with such fervor, she’s pushed backwards until her back hits the trunk of the maple tree making her gasp, momentarily disconnecting their lips. Taking advantage of this Nicole pulls away, slightly out of breath and her heart flips a thousand times at the site of Waverly chasing her lips. Knowing that Waverly wants her makes her feel weak in the knees. Her heart is all in. Her mind however, still hesitant, the conflicting emotions holding her back from kissing Waverly into oblivion.-“Wait….Waverly wait” She whispers panting lightly “So what you’re saying is that ….you….you want me”? she asks choking with emotion, her gaze filled with awe and wonderment.-“Yes. Yes I do” Waverly replies without an ounce of hesitation “I really really do, Nicole Rayleigh Haught. Because I don’t want to be friends. When I think of what I want to do most in this world, it’s you” she blurts out realizing only mere seconds later the implications of her words. “God, that sounded so much more romantic in my head” She mumbles rather embarrassed.“So jump in anytime Nicole, if …. If you want to that is” she says bashfully gazing into warm brown eyes that seem to be looking into her very soul. “You do still want me right”? She asks in a small voice laced with a pinch of doubt, before shyly dipping her chin, a blush spreading across her cheeks”.Nicole lifts Waverly’s chin with a curled index finger and forces her to meet her intense gaze.-“Always” she declares with conviction “Waverly!! I’ll always want you” she adds hoping to clear any doubts if at all from Waverly’s mind, who’s eyes light up with happiness and relief at the declaration. They turn into tiny half-moons as she gives Nicole the biggest smile she’s ever seen.Powerless to hold back much longer Nicole moves her hand from Waverly’s chin and lovingly rests it on her cheeks before capturing the brunette’s soft lips with her own. A quick peck at first, followed immediately by hungry open mouthed kisses. Wet, hot and messy. Taking control Nicole turns her around switching their positions, her lips never leaving Waverly’s as she pins her into the tree her body flush against the smaller woman’s.Nicole had been dreaming of this for a long time, but getting to experience it for real is far better then what she’d imagined. Kissing Waverly is like coming home. Nothing else matters in this moment and all of her worries and anxieties dissipate.Neither of them want to stop but are forced to when the need for oxygen becomes eminent. Breathless and blushing they both pull back simultaneously, their foreheads touching, eyes never leaving the other’s.-“Are you’re still leaving”? Asks Waverly on the verge of tears not wanting to ever imagine being away from the redhead.-“Not without you” Nicole answers as Waverly once again closes the distance to seal their lips in a passionate kiss, full of love, hope and promises of a brighter future together.
