The Sunshine in the Rain

Work Text

Harvey wasn’t sure why exactly the farmer had asked them to come to the beach at such an early hour, particularly during a day where cold, inclement weather could chill you to the bone. But Harvey’s usual routine and mood had been thrown into a frenzy after a text from the farmer had come in as soon as he was settling in to his morning coffee.

Meet me at the beach as soon as you can!

And don’t worry, I’m fine. <3

Pulling the collar up to his ears as the rain slapped the side of his face, Harvey wondered what on earth his partner could be wanting him for that could not be better handled by someone else. That was unless it was some sort of surprise, which would not be unlike them to try and plan something wild for him to run into on a rainy day at the beach.

But he was accustomed to the farmer’s strange behavior at this point, in fact he found it charming. The fact that the farmer ran everywhere, arms filled with gifts to make the villagers smile, or the way their face lit up as they would share with Harvey about the strange and curious treasures that they collected from the depths of the mines. Even their relationship had started off non-traditionally, the farmer busting into his office mid-appointment, hand’s full of a massive bouquet just as Harvey had been about to start an exam of George Mullner.

George eventually forgave the offending party when Harvey’s eyes grew teary, knowing that one of the older bachelors in town had finally realized that he was worthy of so much love.

Finally reaching the runny sand, Harvey dug in his heels as wind and water battled him against the shore. He could hardly say he liked the beach on a good day, and once again he found that he could curse himself for the lack of appropriate footwear. Following the farmer’s instructions he made a sharp left to cut across the dunes, coming to a rickety bridge (one he was slightly convinced the farmer had built themselves) and crossing the river before he spotted them.

Harvey recognized his lover's stance on the beach, and his chest tightened slightly. The farmer did look miserable standing by the tide pools alone, their hair in a wet mop and their overalls soaked completely through. He felt an incoming lecture brewing in his mind, but then the farmer turned to him and smiled, and instantly Harvey dissolved into the comfort of their crooked grin. Even in miserable, cold weather the farmer’s smile radiated like the sun and banished all feeling of numbness in his fingers and toes, making him feel like he was pushed along towards them by a warm spring breeze instead of a stormy gail.

And he realized it didn’t really matter what the farmer had planned on this strange occasion on this rainy day at the beach, because it was the farmer’s smile and kindness and love that was his home and he was prepared to weather whatever life could throw at him with them by his side. And Harvey’s hands tried not to shake too much as he finally met and embraced them, even if he did think he spotted a small sliver of cerulean blue peek out from under the farmer’s fingers.
