Work Text

It had been a completely random find based on a YouTube video that sparked the idea with enough motivation to purchase two, one for Zoro and one for her. She had to go looking for his, wanting to find something special that she knew he’d enjoy. Hers was easy to find, in fact, her issue was the number of options to choose from.Advent calendars! Zoro wasn’t much of a Christmas or holiday person at all, but she figured this would be right up his alley. She had it planned out perfectly, having put in her order in early November and had them hidden away until December 1st.Sitting on the counter were two advent calendars, larger than the traditional chocolate ones because one was a wine and the other was sake. She’d gotten home from work and pulled them out from their hiding places, wanting to have them waiting for when Zoro got home and they could open them together. She’d plugged in the fake tree and the other fairy lights around the apartment, the only other light coming from the kitchen where she’d put down dinner to be served with their first drinks. Unlike Zoro, she was into the holiday season, the lights, the foods and drinks of the season, the different traditions from the various religious groups that lived in the area. It was a smorgasbord for someone who loved to learn about culture and traditions. She was excited to maybe make some with Zoro. This would be their first holiday season living together and she couldn’t wait.A key in the door broke her from her thoughts and she turned away from the counter to go greet her boyfriend. His nose was red from walking home, but he otherwise looked comfortable as ever.“Hey babe, welcome home!” She waited for him to put down his bags, storing his practice swords in the hall closet before stepping closer to kiss him. His face was as cold as she expected but his kiss still warmed her.“Hey,” He returned as the kiss broke. He got to work removing the extra layers as she stood patiently by.“I have a surprise on the counter.” She told him, taking his now free hand and guiding him over there.“Yeah? Thought gifts were until later this month.” Not that Zoro was a big gift person, but he’d acquiesced to her excitement of celebrating with him.“They are but this one has to be today, otherwise it won’t make as much sense.”They turned the corner and Zoro stopped, staring at the two rather large boxes cluttering up their counter.“I’ll bite. What are they?”She moved closer and lifted the lids to both, Zoro coming over to observe. There were 24 numbers in the cardboard, clearly meant to be removed, though his had a 25th one on the side.“They’re advent calendars. They count down to Christmas, and each day we open up the corresponding number. Inside is a different treat. Go ahead and open day one of yours, you’ll get it then.” She was practically bouncing in place, excited for his reaction.Zoro raised a brow at her excitement but did as asked. His finger went through the cardboard easily, the perforated edges easily peeled back on day one. He saw a lid and pulled at it, having to put a hand on the rest of the cardboard to not drag the entire thing jump and ruin the other days. The bottle in his hand was familiar if a bit smaller than normal. It was a sake bottle, a brand he hadn’t heard of before but looked good.“Sake. You got me a sake calendar.” He said, a grin growing on his face. Damn, he loved her, this gift was perfect.“I got you a sake calendar! And I got myself a wine one.” She quickly poked at the cardboard for her own day, pulling out a red wine, a merlot according to the bottle. “I figured we can have them with dinner or after dinner each night while they last. There’s a surprise for your box on day 25.” She was still bouncing in place, so excited that he seemed to not only approve the gift but be looking forward to it.Zoro put down the sake and pulled her in for another kiss. “Thanks, this is a cool idea. What about your day 25?”She shook her head, a bit breathless from the kiss. “I don’t have a day 25. I’ll probably just go buy some wine if we don’t celebrate with the others.”Zoro made a note to talk to someone about getting her some good wine. He wasn’t the best at buying gifts, more of an act of service type, but this he could do. Even if it meant asking the stupid chef.“Come on, let's open these and eat. I got your favorite from the place around the corner. Thought it’d be a nice way to start out December.” She grinned, grabbing both little bottles and head to get them poured.Zoro watched her, his face softening, her thoughtfulness and care warming him better than any drink could. It’d be a good month, and he was already thinking that maybe, just maybe, this would be a good tradition for them going forward, even if he wasn’t much of a holiday person, he was a her person.“Do I warm this or chill it?” He heard her and followed her, as he would for as long as he could, to help.
