Jungkook wanted to throw up.He stood before a looming building, his stomach clenching, heart palpitating, and he wasn't sure if it was from dread or excitement. If he wasn't in the middle of a busy street - and if he had eaten anything for lunch - he probably would have given in to the churning of his stomach. But he was Jungkook, a full-grown adult forced to step out of his comfort zone, ready to face new challenges head-on.Jungkook tilted his head up towards the sky, letting the warm afternoon sun caress his face, imagining it melting away his impending panic.Jungkook was grateful for his relatively boring life, living the same routine every day, despite what his appearance may suggest. He loved routine; he thrived on it, and yet, the past few weeks have been nothing but.Three weeks ago, he was informed that his aunt died - he didn't even know he had an aunt! He was under the impression that his parents didn't have siblings. That was why he jumped from one foster home to another because no other relative was willing to take him in after the accident. As if finding out about her existence wasn't shocking enough, he was told that this said aunt had left him a fortune, including a luxurious apartment suite. He still couldn't wrap his head around all these shocking revelations. But despite feeling like he was thrown in the middle of a hurricane, he felt like he needed to see this through. All his life he wanted to learn more about himself - his parents, what they were like, and why there was no one else around to care for him. He wanted to find where he truly belonged. Now that this mysterious aunt had entered the picture - despite it being a little too late- he felt like he owed it to himself to discover more. That was how he came to find himself standing in front of what looked like Renaissance architecture with semi-circular arches, domes, and floor-to-ceiling windows, located in a busy business district area of the country's Capital City. Everywhere he looked he saw men in suits looking dapper, and women in high-quality clothes - ones that looked like they came straight from the Gossip Girl set.He knew the business district was full of professionals and middle to upper-class families. That was why he dreaded coming here, but still, he cleaned up to be somewhat acceptable by their standards. For today's excursion, he went for a more safe look - an all-black ensemble: he sported a black leather jacket, black closed-neck shirt, black leather jeans, and black stomper boots. His tattoo-filled arm was safely hidden away, but there was nothing he could do about his piercings - on his ears, his brow, and his lips.Despite cleaning up nicely - in his opinion- he still felt, rather than seen, people's stare. A shiver ran up his spine. What was he thinking? He would never fit in here, and will never be able to call this place home. He dreaded the inevitable judging looks that the tenants will throw his way - their lips will probably be pressed in a thin line, and they may even throw some condescending remarks. He'd been subjected to such scrutiny most of his teenage and adult life that he should be used to it, but it's not always that easy. There were times when it still rubbed him the wrong way.He was this close to turning back and leaving - fuck whatever he came here for - when he heard his phone ring.He sighed and greeted the caller, "Hello?""Hey, Jungkook. Did you arrive safely?" the man on the other line asked. Jungkook grinned despite himself."Yoongi-hyung, how about I continue crashing at your place, yeah?""Don't even think about it!" came Yoongi's dry voice. Jungkook chuckled, "It was worth asking.""Go get settled. I'll bring you food in the eve.""Aaaw, hyung. You really do love me, don't you?" Jungkook teased. The line suddenly went dead just as he expected; a loud laugh left him causing a passersby to eye him suspiciously.
Right, into the fire I go, I guess.
"We are through, do you hear me? Don't even think about coming near me again!" Taehyung shouted into the phone, abruptly ending the call.He wanted to slam the phone just like how one would if one was using the old-fashioned telephone receiver. He wanted the person on the other end of the line to hear the bang, instead of just a dead line. Did that make him petty? Maybe, but he didn't much care. After all he had been through because of that man, he was entitled to pettiness. Petty and dramatic - that was how that man described Taehyung to his friends. And while it may have been true - that Taehyung was being dramatic at times- how he felt now was not him simply being "dramatic".His anger, his fear, and his anxiety were real. His hands shook as he placed his phone on the counter and took a few steps away as if it might explode any second. As if the person he was talking to at the other end of the line will somewhat materialize out of thin air.Taehyung took a deep breath as he tried to calm his nerves. He was so furious - and oh so afraid- he could feel a nerve throbbing in his head.Unfortunately, counting to ten and deep breathing didn't seem to help.Music. He needed music. He picked up his phone once again, located his favorite playlist, and turned on his Bluetooth speaker. Music wafted through his apartment, filling the empty space. Taehyung wistfully thought that the music cleared the air, making it easier for him to breathe again. He closed his eyes and let the rhythm wash away his anger; chased away the bad thoughts. Before he knew it, he was dancing, his hips swaying in time with the music.Jungkook adjusted the box he was holding and pushed his other luggage out of the elevator as it reached his floor. His aunt's apartment - technically his apartment now- was on the 27th floor. The top floor, he recently found out. Jungkook was also told that due to the building's design, there were only two apartment suites on this landing which he thought was convenient. He preferred not to interact with any of the tenants if that was even possible. As soon as he managed to get all of his things out of the elevator, he noticed the loud music coming from the room in front of him. He lifted his gaze and saw a man with a delicate frame and fluffy brunette hair, dancing like no one's watching.Jungkook supposed the other person was not aware that his apartment door was completely open. Jungkook probably should have stopped staring then, but he was mesmerized. It was as if his eyes were glued and he couldn't peel them away even if he tried. There was something so enchanting to the way the brunette moved: he was delicately swaying his hips, his eyes closed, and his face was flushed from dancing. His new neighbor's soft curls bounced gently along with his movements and a boxy smile was plastered on his face as if the mere act of dancing brought him so much joy.The reckless abandon with which the other man was dancing tugged a smile from Jungkook's face."Cute", Jungkook heard himself say aloud, jolting him to reality. He wanted to smack his own head.
Great Jungkook. You just moved in here and now you're ogling at your neighbor. Note to self: do not stare at your neighbor - no matter how cute you think they are.
With that thought in mind, Jungkook headed towards his own unit next door.Taehyung heard the elevator's "Going down" announcement a little too loudly for his comfort. He turned his body mid-dance and was horrified when he discovered a little too late that the door was wide open.He cussed and hurriedly closed the door, his heart pounding. What if someone came by and saw him?! Oh wait, no one usually came up to his floor. It was just him and the old lady tenant. A pang of sadness suddenly hit him when he remembered it was just him now. The old lady, who he befriended, had passed a few weeks ago.Wait, the new neighbor was scheduled to move in today, right? he thought.Funny how he hadn't heard the movers or anyone come and go. Usually, when someone was moving to a unit, there would be a ruckus of activities – from moving old furniture out to moving new furniture in to costly renovations. But this time, it was so... quiet; peaceful even.Dancing long forgotten, Taehyung wondered what the new neighbor would be like. He liked the old lady before, bless her soul. Maybe he should bake his popular cookies as a welcome gift.Just when he was about to prepare the ingredients for baking, his phone rang."Taebear!" the person on the other line cried out as soon as Taehyung picked up.Taehyung beamed, "Jiminie! When will you come home? I miss you." He whined. Jimin chuckled at the other end, "Baby bear is whiny as usual. I'll be back before you know it! Just calling to make sure you're well.""I am... Just broke up with the asshole, by the way." Taehyung said as casually as he could, not wanting Jimin to worry. He dropped his body onto the sofa, feeling exhausted. Dancing was always a good idea. It helped him release pent-up emotions and cleared his head."Good for you! I never really liked him. He gave me bad vibes." Taehyung laughed. He could imagine Jimin scrunching his nose in disgust.Jimin hated his now ex-boyfriend even without knowing the whole situation Taehyung was in. As for Taehyung, he didn't really love the said jerk, but he liked the attention at first; liked being adored.Taehyung liked how his ex-boyfriend used to send him good morning and good night messages, or how he had sent him flowers on numerous occasions, or how he seemed possessive when another person looked at Taehyung.Until the adoration became suffocating and abusive. Until the jerk started reading Taehyung's messages behind his back. Until Taehyung's ex started threatening him for spending time with his own friends. That escalation wasn't fun. At all."Look, I'll visit you as soon as I land in Seoul. Take care till then, okay?" Jimin said bringing his attention back to the present."Okay. Bring me lots of goodies please."They said their goodbyes and Taehyung decided to kill time by baking. He had enough time before he needed to check in on the café. Plus, he wanted an excuse to knock next door and meet the mystery neighbor.Jungkook took a deep breath before punching in his security code. He honestly didn't know what to expect. He didn't know his aunt, how she lived, what she was like. She was a stranger to him.He imagined her to be a simple cat lady. Maybe the apartment is decorated with dainty wallpaper and grandmother furniture. Maybe the place would be filled with knicks and knacks - a collection of the sort - and he would have to put all of those in storage.Maybe he was being a judgmental nephew.Jungkook shook his head, trying to clear his head. Everything happened so suddenly that he didn't know what to think, what to expect.Guess he'll have to live in an apartment with elegant yet old-fashioned furniture and fixtures. His plan was to try and last a year in this place - just until he can get back on his feet - then he could move to a decent flat that was truly his own.Aside from the apartment, his aunt also left him a considerable amount of money - enough that would make his life much more comfortable than it already was. But Jungkook refused to touch the fortune his aunt had left him. Jungkook couldn't stomach using someone else's money, especially from one he never even knew. The apartment, though, he had no choice but to accept - if only to let Yoongi have his place to himself.Bracing himself, he stepped inside the apartment but was surprised by the sight that welcomed him.The suite was painted with a comforting shade of blue and grey walls and decorated with sleek-looking furniture. If Jungkook didn't know better, he'd assume that the place was owned by a very successful bachelor. It was sleek, modern, and very functional. He placed the box he was holding on the floor and dropped his duffel bag. Carefully, as if afraid he'd make a noise, he circled the space. Despite his reluctance, his excitement grew.Jungkook ran his hand along the stainless steel countertop in the kitchen, whistling low as he checked out the modern-looking refrigerator and other kitchen appliances. Everything looked pristine, almost brand new. It was as if the apartment was outfitted to suit his taste - which was highly improbable - how would his aunt know his preferences? His aunt never met him, as far as he knew. How could she even guess what he would have loved?A pang of sadness hit him so suddenly that it took his breath away. It was as if his heart was constricting and he had to swallow hard to remove the lump forming in his throat. The sadness that Jungkook felt was a different kind of loss. What kind of life did his aunt live? Why would she leave everything to him? This wasn't grief he was feeling, he was sure of it. How could he grieve someone he hadn't known? And yet, he felt an ache deep within his heart at the loss of what could have been.He took deep calming breaths and when he was calm enough, he started to unpack. He was making progress when the door chimed signaling a visitor. Frowning, he walked towards the door and wondered who it would be.He checked the screen, and Jungkook was already grinning when he opened the door."Yoongi hyung!" he greeted excitedly."Look who came with me," the older said, throwing him a gummy smile as a tall man stepped into Jungkook's view."Namjoon hyung! Wow, you're not busy today?" he asked, stepping aside to allow his guests entry to his new place.Namjoon chuckled as they all stepped inside, "We finished the art installations early so I decided to come."Yoongi wasted no time in observing the open-space design of the apartment. His mouth hung open at the floor-to-ceiling windows, modern furniture, and sleek industrial-looking countertop. "Ya JK, this place looks expensive! Maybe I'll start crashing here instead," he teased, his eyes turning into small crescents.Jungkook giggled, "You know you're always welcome here, hyung.""We'll help you get settled, but first let's get some food into your system," Namjoon, who was also taking a quick sweep of the apartment, suggested turning to Jungkook, but Jungkook was already halfway through his first slice. They were in the middle of a discussion about pineapples on pizza when Jungkook's doorbell chimed again.Yoongi's brow raised, "Expecting someone else?"Jk shook his head as he headed for the screen. He saw no one.Brow furrowing, he opened the door anyway to check just in case. He looked left and right but saw no one in the hallway. He was about to close the door when he saw a pink box on his doorstep. He picked it up and found a hastily scribbled note that said, "Welcome, neighbor."Curious, he opened the package and saw a dozen chocolate chip cookies. His mouth watered instantly; he was always weak for baked treats and these looked and smelled divine.Who could've left these? He wondered, then a cute brunette with soft curls popped in his mind. A chuckle escaped him. He stepped further into the hall hoping to find the said brunette but found that the other's apartment door was now closed. It was half past ten when Yoongi and Namjoon left Jungkook's apartment. They busied themselves in helping Jungkook get settled in, even though his belongings were minimal at best. He knew they did it so he wouldn't feel so lonely being in a new environment, and he loved them all the more for it.It took another hour for Jungkook's nerves to finally settle down - to say that he was exhausted was an understatement - his muscles and his joints were sore, and his head ached. He expected to fall right to sleep but somehow, sleep evaded him. He chalked it up to being in a completely new place, one that is far from what he was used to.His nerves buzzed with energy - or was it adrenaline? Was his fight and flight response triggered by all these changes? He tossed and turned, checked his phone, then tossed and turned some more. But sleep still didn't want to come. He was about to give up and get off the bed when he heard a faint sound coming from beyond his bedroom wall.Listening intently, Jungkook realized that it was coming from next door. His neighbor was playing soothing instrumental music, and the sound wafted through and filled his cold, unfamiliar room.Jungkook loved music – being open to different genres such as pop, rock, RnB, soul, and more- but he hadn't given instrumentals any thought. Now, he found the faint music that trickled into his room very soothing. He listened to the rise and fall of the piano, and the building of emotions behind the strings, and before he knew it, he was lulled to a deep, dreamless sleep.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
The café bustled with energy and life by the time Taehyung stepped out of the kitchen. He could hear the clinking of utensils, the chatter of customers, and the soft lounge music playing in the background. He smiled taking in the sight of the busy café.Natural light filtered in, casting the place a warm and inviting glow. The inviting aroma of cinnamon, sugar, and coffee filled his senses. Taehyung suddenly felt an overwhelming affection for this café.For as long as he could remember, he had dreamt of owning one, and now, his dream cafe was thriving. It may not be the most successful one in the area (yet), but he had built a loyal following. His loyal customers always seemed to want his baked goods, and there was a constant flow of online delivery orders. He couldn't ask for more.It was an added bonus whenever his customers cared to share their stories of how his baked creations had brought them good fortune. Others even shared how Taehyung's cinnamon rolls played a huge role in helping them find the love of their life.Teahyung sighed. If only the baker also experienced good fortune in his own love life as well. But oh well, as long as his baked creations made others happy, he was happy too. It didn't stop the pang of longing whenever he saw happy couples sharing his baked creations with heart eyes and wide smiles.Still, a wistful smile crept on his face as he arranged the cupcakes on the shelf. He didn't usually work the counter - most of the time, he was holed up in the kitchen, covered in flour, and smelled like cinnamon, but it was an exceptionally busy day that he wanted to help out his staff. His recent batch of cinnamon rolls was still in the oven anyway.Just then, he heard the store door chime signaling newly arrived customers. Taehyung looked up meaning to greet them but his breath caught. There, near the door, stood a God.Okay, maybe not the God. But oh boy, if God made man in his image then this man was a very beautiful replica indeed. He was the most gorgeous man Taehyung has laid his eyes on.The man had pretty eyes that crinkled at the sides as he giggled at what his companion was saying. His hair was parted to the side, showing an undercut, accenting his sharp jawline. But what caught Taehyung's attention was the glint of the lip piercing. Taehyung absentminded licked his lips. Why was it suddenly hot in the cafe? Should he turn up the air con?Drinking in the sight of the man, Taehyung noticed the loose shirt slightly tucked in his loose-fitting pants, giving the other man a somewhat disheveled look. But he wore it so well, Taehyung almost let out a moan."Chef Taehyung," a staff interrupted his rather devolving thoughts, pulling his attention away."The newest batch of cinnamon rolls is ready," the staff continued, blushing at Tae's intense stare."I'll be right there," he responded distractedly. He turned his attention back to the man and eyed him longingly. The gorgeous man and his -equally gorgeous- companion were already seated. Taehyung pouted; he could've given them the menu and suggested their most popular item if they entered a little bit earlier."Can't let me flirt, huh?" Taehyung muttered to no one at all, or perhaps, he was complaining to the universe."This is my favorite bakery, Hobi-hyung," Jungkook said excitedly, a bunny smile painted his face, making him look boyish and radiant. He led the way, opening the door of the cafe, and he was welcomed by the delicious scent of freshly baked bread, cinnamon, and brewed coffee. It felt familiar to him, feeling a sense of belonging, even when he had never stepped foot in here before. The cafe was enveloped by a warm glow, setting a homey ambiance - a huge contrast to the busy, noisy street just outside.Jungkook and his companion, Hobi, found a table near the store's glass window. This section of the cafe gave them a full view of the street and passersby, but the tinted glass gave them some form of privacy."Really? But isn't this place far off your tattoo shop? Even Yoongi's apartment is far from here." Hobi said as he perused the menu.Prior to his move, Jungkook used to stay at Yoongi's apartment, sharing half of the rent. Yoongi once offered him free lodging, but he refused. He didn't want to be a burden to anyone and the truth was, he could afford to rent a full studio flat in a much less popular neighborhood. But he also needed to set aside extra savings if he wanted to expand his tattoo shop."They're on the food app," Jungkook explained, "I order them online and have them delivered at Yoongi's or at the shop. It's actually my first time here.""Get the cinnamon rolls, they're to die for," Jungkook suggested, pointing it at the menu. "Trust me, Hobi-hyung, it tastes so good it makes me angry," he finished throwing the other man a wide grin."Okay, I'm convinced," Hobi responded with a smile, then to the wait staff, he said, "I'll get an iced coffee and a cinnamon roll please".Jungkook placed his order as well but chose to get Yuja tea instead of coffee, hoping to calm his still buzzing nerves. He was still feeling restless - as if something was crawling on his skin, and his mind felt a little muddled and noisy - even after a good night's sleep. This feeling wasn't new to him; he always experience this whenever he was thrown off his comfort zone."So, how are you settling?" Hobi asked as soon as the wait staff left.Jungkook shrugged, "It's okay, I guess. The place is huge and very modern. You should come and visit if you have time.""Yeah, I'd love that. How are the other residents? You were stressing out about them being prejudiced towards-" Hobi gestured towards Jungkook's general direction. When Jungkook found out that the apartment he inherited was actually located in a luxurious building, he almost didn't want to accept it because of his past experiences with rich people. They were either too demeaning and demanding because of his line of work, or they had a hard time getting over their prejudice towards tattooed and pierced people. This is especially true for the rich, stuck-up, older generation. With his piercings and tattoos out in the open, he worried he'll have a hard time fitting in because surely, the tenants in the building will have had preconceived notions about him. He didn't think he could stomach seeing them stare at him with their lips pressed in a thin line. Objectively, he knew not all of them would react negatively, but it didn't change the fact that he felt anxious about it.The wait staff arrived just then to place their orders on the table, dragging Jungkook's attention back to the present. Upon the mention of his new neighbors, the brunette - and his cookies- once again crossed Jungkook's mind."Can I have an extra box of cinnamon rolls to go, please?" Jungkook said in a much lower voice for the wait staff who gave him a smile in acknowledgment.Jungkook picked up his tea and gave a small smile before answering, "I haven't seen them. My apartment is on the top floor and I only have one neighbor.""Wow, that's a good thing, right?""Yeah, and I'm also all covered up," he continued, raising his arm."If they're going to give you a hard time, I'm running right over and –" Hobi said making karate chopping movements with his hands, trying to look intimidating but failing completely.Jungkook laughed out loud, endeared, "Thanks, hyung but don't worry about it."Jungkook's mind drifted - again, and he didn't know why it was happening so often- to his next-door neighbor. He remembered the other's delicate frame swaying to the music, and his flushed beautiful face looking so carefree and blissful. Then his mind conjured the mouthwatering taste of the chocolate chip cookies his neighbor left on his doorstep. The cookies were life-changing and it wasn't an exaggeration. Even Yoongi and Namjoon stuffed their faces full of cookies because they couldn't get enough. They jokingly said that the cookies must have been laced with crack cause they were addictive. They were all fine after eating the cookies so they assumed the cookies didn't actually have crack. But still.Jungkook didn't know he was smiling until Hobi pointed it out, "What got you smiling like that?" he teased.Jungkook shook his head, "Nothing. I just remembered my neighbor left me cookies yesterday as a welcome gift."Hobi perked up at the new information. "Really? You've met them?""Not officially. I accidentally saw him in his apartment because he left the door open, but he didn't notice me. He must've heard about me moving in because he left me something," Jungkook explained, leaving off the detail about seeing his neighbor dancing. Somehow, he wanted to keep that moment for himself."That's sweet of him. I hope you'll meet officially- soon. I hate for you to be so alone in that building."After spending time with Hobi, Jungkook decided to walk around to familiarize himself with the business district. The apartment building was surrounded by towering office buildings and hotels, interspersed with shops, cafes, and salons. It wasn't really that bad - if at all, even if it was thirty minutes away from his tattoo shop. In fact, it wasn't all that much different from Yoongi's district. He knew where his reluctance came from: his stubbornness toward accepting change. While Jungkook felt uncomfortable to be living in the same building as the middle to upper classes, he wasn't such a recluse as to completely avoid society. The root of his problems was his insecurities and bad experiences before. He really needs to come to terms with that if he wanted to fully enjoy his life.On his walk around the block, he was glad to have found a park just a few minutes walk away - which would have looked out of place from all the modern buildings surrounding it- but the park looked peaceful and inviting. Among those he saw at the park were fur parents walking their dogs - others played frisbee. He also found parents or guardians watching over the children playing in the mini jungle gym.It seemed like a good place to unwind. He imagined jogging there at dawn when there were not a lot of people around. In another block, he found a bookstore as well as a beauty store. The commercial area was bustling with energy and life and he found himself strangely fascinated. He doesn't usually roam around while the sun was out -his work at the tattoo shop takes most of his time- and by the time he steps out of his shop, it's usually after sunset. By that time, the blue sky had long been replaced by orange-kissed hues, and while that is a breathtaking view of its own, he also missed taking a day off just to walk around and watch people.Plus, his tattoo shop was surrounded by KTV bars and Korean BBQ restaurants and so this environment and ambiance were new to him. He found that he liked it. It was somewhat refreshing and the air was clearer compared to the smoke-tinged air that assaulted him whenever he stepped out of his shop.Jungkook reached the end of the block when he noticed the record shop. And while he loved music, he wasn't into collecting vinyl records., but last night - as he was arranging his stuff- he noticed a phonograph in the apartment. He initially wanted to try it out but he didn't find any vinyl record.Maybe his aunt bought it for aesthetics, he reasoned, but now that he was in front of a vinyl shop, he was tempted to look inside and see if there was a record that will catch his attention. He hesitated going inside but a familiar figure with a delicate frame and sharp eyes – details that somehow engraved themselves into his memory, caught his attention. He opened the door and stepped inside.Taehyung rushed to the record shop as soon as he was done at the cafe. Last night, the shop manager called and informed him that his pre-ordered LP record had arrived. He had been buzzing with excitement the whole day and barely contained himself from rushing to the record shop as soon as it opened. The moment he stepped foot in the shop, he went straight to the counter to retrieve his pre-ordered item with single-minded determination. When the manager handed him the jazz LP record, Taehyung swore he could hear angels singing. The manager chuckled, "I was waiting for when you'll eventually show up here."Taehyung threw the older man a boxy smile, "You have no idea how excited I was the whole day, but the cafe was so busy I couldn't get out fast enough!" he finished with a pout."Well, you're here now. Look around before you go, you might find something that will interest you," the manager offered kindly. Taehyung nodded, "I'll do just that! Thank you, Mr. Park!"Taehyung turned to go but decided to put on his headphones first, turning the volume down enough to hear the tracks as well as his surroundings. This was his go-to move when he wanted to prevent other people from striking up a conversation.Feeling satisfied yet extremely excited to go back home, he busied himself browsing for other records he can buy. Suddenly, someone bumped into him hard enough to knock him forward, and before he could process what would have been a bad fall, two strong arms kept him safe and steady."You're okay, I got you."Taehyung barely registered the low voice and the firm yet gentle hands on his sides. His heart pounded in his chest, threatening to jump out of his throat. He was still shaken from being shoved forward, but he made himself look up and his breath left him completely. Before him, stood the God - the same gorgeous man he'd seen at the café.Taehyung must have fallen, hit his head, and now he was hallucinating because how else did this man materialize before him. Taehyung was suddenly hyper-aware of the gorgeous man's firm, strong arms around him- and whoop there went his heart galloping triple time in his chest. The other man's concerned eyes locked on Taehyung and a distracting strand of hair was loose on his forehead. He had the sudden urge to finger the loose tendril of hair, but before he could act upon his intrusive thought, the other man turned his attention to the person who carelessly bumped into Taehyung.Shooting daggers he almost growled, "Hey, be careful next time!"Not waiting for a reply, the stranger turned his full attention on him, his brown eyes traveling around Taehyung's face and down his body- probably assessing if he was hurt. Heat crept up Taehyung's face from the other's thorough inspection. He was a hundred percent sure that he was a blushing mess. When Taehyung got a hold of himself, he pulled his headset down, stepped back, straightened, and mustered as much dignity as he could. "Thank you. It caught me by surprise is all. I'm fine now." Taehyung assured while he kept his head down, refusing to meet the other's eyes. The gorgeous stranger tucked a finger under his chin, gently urging Taehyung to meet his eyes. "Are you sure you're okay?" the other's round doe eyes were full of concern and his voice sounded like honey to Taehyung's ears."Yes," he didn't mean for it to sound so breathless, then the stranger gave him a bunny smile so wide that his eyes crinkled at the sides, a whimper almost escaped Taehyung. Fearing he would embarrass himself some more, he took another step back. Then another.
Then another. He bowed politely making an excuse about leaving and almost ran for the door. As soon as Taehyung was outside and away from the record shop, he breathed deeply, willing his heart rate to slow down.Why. Why. WHY did he become a blabbering blushing mess in front of someone who could be the love of his life?Okay, he was exaggerating but the guy was gorgeous as hell and now, Taehyung didn't want to know what the other man thought of him after his display of patheticness. Was that a word - patheticness? If not, then it should be because Taehyung needed a word for his actions. He slapped his cheeks gently, trying to refocus. He was simply caught off guard, and besides, he probably won't run into Mr. Molded-by-the-Gods again soon- although he wished they would. And if they do, Taehyung hoped he'll have his wits with him.Jungkook blinked several times, not sure what happened. His mind was reeling; he was still stuck with the mental image of his neighbor's round surprised eyes, flushed cheeks, and pink lips. Now, Jungkook watched the other scurry away from him as if his ass were on fire.Did I cross some boundary? he wondered. He should've kept his cool, especially since they were still strangers, but when he saw the brunette almost falling over, his heart lurched in his chest. He acted on instinct and reflex.A strange protectiveness came over him, causing him to growl at the offender. Once that was out of his system, he wanted to make sure the other was okay. Jungkook once again acted on instinct when he cupped the other's chin so he could properly look at the brunette - to make sure he was not hurt or injured. Now he second-guessed himself, wondering if it was too forward. If somehow, he had crossed a line. He had not been around strangers much, especially around someone he found attractive. This is what he got for being off the dating scene for far too long. But there was nothing he could do now. He promised himself that he would do better next time. If there was a next time. The brunette's sharp surprised eyes, pink parted lips, and blushing face flashed in his mind.Yes, he desperately hoped there will be a next time.Taehyung came home that night completely exhausted. It has been one hell of a day - dealt with his annoying ex-boyfriend, saw a gorgeous man at the cafe, and then meeting that same man later at the record store- so when the elevator opened to his floor, he couldn't help the sigh of relief that escaped his lips.As he approached his apartment, the sight of a familiar blush pink box caught his eye. Without warning, his blood ran cold. His heart pounded violently in his chest, a ringing started in his ear, and his breaths came in harsh puffs. It couldn't be Ji Won, his ex-boyfriend, right? Taehyung swallowed, trying to grasp the rational thought that flashed in his mind. He specifically told the front desk not to let Ji Won come up if he ever came to visit. But what if his ex-boyfriend asked a security guard to deliver a "gift"?, said the tiny, terrified voice in his head. With wobbly feet, he made himself walk towards his apartment door. His hand shook as he picked up the familiar box, but upon closer inspection, he noticed that it was a pastry box from his bakery. His eyebrows furrowed. Ji Won never bought anything from his bakery. The jerk never liked sweets and he, for sure, never acknowledged Tae's success with the business. Ji Won's mood always turned sour whenever Tae mentions the cafe so he stopped talking about it - even when he was happy and proud of his accomplishments.Convinced that it wasn't from his ex-boyfriend, Taehyung's trepidation slowly drained away from him replaced by curiosity. It felt like he was awash in a sea of lukewarm water, the ice in his bones started to thaw.As he continued to inspect the package, he saw the small note attached to the box.It says:
"Hey, neighbor. Thanks for the cookies! They were sinful as hell and we inhaled it in one sitting. I hope you don't mind that I shared it with friends.
Here's an appreciation gift which I got from my favorite
- and the best-
bakery in town."
It was signed simply with "JK".Taehyung couldn't help the small smile that tugged at his lips. Maybe his neighbor wasn't so bad. After all, he considered his bakery the best in town.Taehyung felt strangely giddy at the thought.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
It was a sunny, warm afternoon and Taehyung once again found himself working the front register at the cafe, a routine formed just a week ago.His staff had their hands full in taking orders, serving dishes, and arranging fresh batches of pastries from the kitchen. And so, it wasn't surprising that Taehyung volunteered to help work the register whenever he wasn't needed in the kitchen. He could hire another staff - and maybe he should- but working at the front line was now a must.Despite the crazy work shifts and the seemingly endless flow of customers, Taehyung felt energized. For the past week, there was a strange buzz in his system every time he entered the bakery day after day. Maybe because someone thought his cafe was "the best" in town? Taehyung giggled as he remembered the note left by his neighbor.Should I bake this "JK" a fresh batch of cookies once again? Taehyung thought humming to himself.Just then, the door chimes gave a soft, sweet tinkle signaling the arrival of new customers. Taehyung's head whipped up so fast he almost felt dizzy; his heart caught in his throat. But disappointment crashed into him like a wave when he saw strangers walking. This was the main reason why Taehyung was working on the front line. He could deny it all he wants, but ever since that fateful day a week ago, every time he heard the melodic tinkling of the cafe door chimes, his heart would lurch in his chest and anticipation would travel his every nerve, only to be disappointed again and again. He waited for the gorgeous stranger, who Taehyung had started calling "Mr. Molded-by-the-Gods" in his head, to come into the cafe again. Unfortunately, Taehyung hadn't spotted the stranger in a week.Taehyung thought Mr. Molded-by-the-Gods must be a tourist - here only for a few days and never to be seen again- or maybe he was visiting someone within the vicinity. If he worked in one of the prestigious offices, he would've dropped by for coffee in the morning - if not at the cafe, then at Starbucks just a few blocks away.Taehyung was sure he would've spotted him if he was in the area; someone as gorgeous as Mr. Molded-by-the-Gods would never escape Tae's notice.Trying to put the stranger at the back of his mind, he focused on the new customers who stopped in front of the register, looking at the menu. As Taehyung waited for them to place their orders, his mind drifted to his neighbor this time.Since JK moved in two weeks ago, Taehyung hadn't seen him. At all.Taehyung was so curious about JK that he had knocked on his neighbor's door a couple of times, but either this JK guy wasn't home most of the day or he was so reclusive and refused to open the door. Taehyung eventually gave up because he didn't want JK to think him a stalker. Why were men, who he was most curious about, eluding him?, Taehyung sighed. Sooner or later, they will meet, but his impatient temperament wants it to happen soon because he was dying of curiosity.Tonight, Jungkook would not recognize a soul.He was so exhausted that he felt almost delirious having spent 8 hours meticulously tattooing a client, who was already squirming 4 hours in. Jungkook gave his client a way out by suggesting cutting the session under the excuse that the client's skin needed a break, but the other was stubborn and said he was still good. And thus commenced one of the longest 8 hours of Jungkook's life.He dragged himself past his apartment door, wondering if he had enough energy to reach his bedroom. His apartment - when did he start thinking of this place as his own?Two weeks had passed since Jungkook moved into the apartment, and contrary to his initial fears, things were good. The tenants kept to themselves so he hadn't met any of them - which also meant he avoided being subjected to scrutiny. He was also working more hours at his tattoo shop, keeping him out of the apartment complex most of the day.Unfortunately, this also meant he hadn't seen his pretty neighbor since their encounter at the record shop. That same day, Jungkook made sure to repay his neighbor's kindness by gifting him the cinnamon rolls from the cafe, but Jungkook took the coward's way out and left the box at the other's door with a note.He regretted his decision the very next day. He should've knocked or waited for the brunette to come home, then he could've properly introduced himself. Ultimately, Jungkook decided there was no use mulling over what could've happened. Now, he could not even conjure coherent thoughts. It felt like his mind was just chanting - bed, bed, bed, sleep, sleep, sleep, like a neanderthal that he was. He collapsed on his bed, not bothering to change out of his clothes but before sleep could completely claim him, Jungkook heard the soft melody drifting into his room.
Goodnight, my baby
Sleep tight, my baby
Goodnight, my baby
Sleep tight, my baby
Goodnight, my baby
Sleep tight, my baby
The faint music that drifted into Jungkook's room gently chased the exhaustion away from his body. He didn't even realize he passed out last night, but now that consciousness was slowly creeping into his body, he felt the resulting aches and pains from his uncomfortable position. He rolled over from his stomach to his back, groaning as he did so, careful not to trigger a cramp. The room was now bathed in warm sunlight, chasing the dark shadows into the corners of the room. The sunlight highlighted the dust motes floating in the air, pulling a soft smile on Jungkook's face. When the fog of sleep has completely lifted, he listened more carefully to the music his neighbor was listening to at the moment.Since the night he moved in, Jungkook discovered that his neighbor loved music. The brunette simply didn't like music - he lived and breathed them, and his taste in music was exquisite.Jungkook was charmed even more.Every day, Jungkook heard a different playlist from his neighbor's place. Each playlist set different kinds of moods - some days the playlist is all about falling in love, other days it was about longing, and other days the songs were slow and sensual which made Jungkook's skin warm and flushed. He found it endearing and secretly tried to imagine what mood the other was in based on that. But of course, it was all delusional thinking on his part since he'll never truly know someone based on music taste alone... right? Some days Jungkook felt like he was intruding on something private, but he couldn't stop listening. It was not his fault that sound waves traveled through walls. And really, no one was being bothered or being treated unfairly.Knocking on his neighbor's door and telling the other to tone it down, never crossed his mind - not when the other's choice of music suited Jungkook's preferences, too. So really, there was no problem at all. With that reasoning, Jungkook shoved the guilt aside and continued listening to his neighbor's playlist as if they were sharing headphones. Today, the song was upbeat, lively, and oh so familiar.
You're a teaser, you turn 'em on
Leave 'em burning and then you're gone
Looking out for another
Anyone will do
You're in the mood for a dance
And when you get the chance
The brunette had Dancing Queen on today. Jungkook's mind conjured the image of the brunette dancing in his living room with no care in the world. The sight was so ingrained in Jungkook's memory that he could summon the image in crystal clarity if he closed his eyes. A smile tugged at the corners of his lips but he was pulled brutally back to reality by the buzzing of his phone. With his throat still dry from sleep, he could only croak, "Hello?" onto the receiver."Mr. Jeon, I'm glad you're awake. I think you need to come here to the shop," it was a woman's voice, thick with worry. Jungkook's mind was still shrouded with sleep and thoughts of his neighbor that he failed to properly place the voice, so he looked at his phone screen to see the bold, white letters - "Lee Yoo Na"."Yoo Na-shi, it's 8 o'clock in the morning. What is this about?" he responded, massaging his temple and willing the impending headache to go away. There was rustling in the background as if Yoo Na was pacing, "Mr. Jeon, the tenant - Mr. Ng is threatening to kick us out."The calming scent of Yuja tea was a stark contrast to the upbeat rhythm that reverberated through the apartment as Taehyung swayed his hips side to side while perusing his collection of vinyl records.Humming along to the tune of Dancing Queen, he wondered if his new neighbor, JK, was bothered by the music. But since he had not received any complaint nor did the other come knocking on his door, he assumed JK wasn't too sound sensitive. Not like the previous owner of the apartment.Taehyung chuckled upon remembering his first meeting with the feisty, edgy, and absolutely intriguing auntie next door.He knew that someone was going to move in a few weeks before he even met the new owner from all the hustle and bustle that always accompanied a change of ownership. The sounds of drilling and carpentry became the norm from 9am to 6pm - which, thankfully, were hours he spent at the cafe. He also saw movers carrying sleek, luxurious-looking appliances and furniture into the unit, and the scent of fresh paint permeated the hallways. Those home improvement activities didn't bother Taehyung as much as the interior designer who managed the entire project. She was a haughty young woman, who wore a sleek pencil cut skit and pointy hills that could kill, not a strand of hair out of place from her severe ponytail.Taehyung wouldn't have noticed her presence at all if she had not constantly barked orders on her phone. With every shrill command that Taehyung was unfortunate enough to listen to, a chill ran down his spine. He felt sorry for her employees and could only imagine the stress that they went through with every project.Remember the old adage, birds of the same feather flock together? Yeah, Taehyung should've kept that in mind, because as severe as the interior designer was, the owner, too, was just as rigid. But back then, Taehyung didn't have a clue. And so, when the owner finally moved in, he baked his signature welcome cookies and knocked on her door. A minute or so later, the door opened, and out came a stunning woman in her late fifties, but there was something cold and unfeeling in her features.Still, Taehyung put on his signature boxy smile and offered her cookies. Her cold gaze traveled from his face down to the box in his hand, and before he could say anything else, the door slammed shut in his face.Shocked and flustered, Taehyung looked left and right, trying to figure out what had happened. He was about to go when the door opened again and out came a slender hand that snatched the box of cookies from his hand. A muttered "thank you" was heard before the door slammed shut with finality.Taehyung couldn't stop the bubble of mirth that escaped his lips.It was completely absurd. And he was intrigued. And much, much later, he was enamored. A wave of sadness washed over Taehyung upon remembering his late neighbor. He wouldn't say that he knew his previous neighbor to the point where they would be called the best of friends. But during her stay in the building, a weird sort of friendship bloomed between them; a friendship built on respect, understanding, and companionship.Taehyung finally found the record he wanted to play next, brightening his mood once again. He tugged at the record from the upper shelf; with one hard pull it came free, but something black and hard came tumbling off the shelf and dropped with a thud on the floor.Taehyung gave a little squeak, jumping away. Brows furrowed in curiosity, he picked it up from the floor, and upon closer inspection, he realized it was his neighbor's old, black journal. It was bound by its black elastic band, almost bursting from how thick it was. The edges were brown and frayed, and the battered spine had numerous creases - proof of how much it had been opened, perused, and read. It smelled old and dusty, tugging at Taehyung's memories.Hye Jin, his previous neighbor, left it in his care before her health turned worst. She might have known about her own mortality when she took Taehyung's hand in hers, looked into his eyes, and handed him what was probably her most important possession.
"Taehyung-shi, I'm entrusting you my memories. You'll know the best time to give it to him... please."
Taehyung softly, reverently ran his long, slender fingers on the cover. He relished the rough texture of the leather; his curiosity hummed in his veins. Oh, how he wanted to take off the bind and learn of its secrets. But those were not his to take.He sighed, remembering his promise. How on earth was he going to give this to his neighbor? How will he know when the "best time" is?! It's not like he could knock on his new neighbor's door and say: "Hey, by the way, your aunt left me a journal full of her memories. You should read it," That would be hella insensitive and callous. No, Taehyung couldn't just drop something like this out of nowhere. This means he'll need to get to know his neighbor first, meaning he'll have to keep this journal safe.He wished Hye Jin wasn't so cryptic and mysterious and intriguing.Jungkook arrived at his tattoo shop in record time.As soon as he ended the call, Jungkook rushed to his motorcycle, put on his helmet, and zipped through traffic. Adrenaline coursed through his veins, chasing the last remnants of sleep, and as he stepped into the shop, he saw Yoo Na spacing out at the front cash register."Lee Yoo Na," Jungkook tried to keep his voice soft to hide the panic and frustration that bubbled just below the surface. As if coming out of a trance, Yoo Na blinked several times and slowly turned to face Jungkook.Jungkook saw that the younger was close to tears, but she tried to keep her emotion in check as she bit her lip in an effort to keep herself from breaking down. Jungkook slowly walked to her side and gently place his hands on her shoulders, trying to ground her."Tell me what happened, Yoo Na."Yoo Na took a steadying breath and said, "Mr. Ng came barging in this morning and demanded to know where you were. I told him you went home to sleep because we had a long session yesterday, but he wouldn't listen. He said if you don't have any plans to buy the place, he'll have to kick us out.""He said he has a real estate buyer willing to buy the place at the full amount - in cash. He gave us an ultimatum of one month to raise the money or he will accept the offer of his other buyer."Jungkook stepped back, suddenly feeling as if the walls were closing in on him, his breaths coming out in short puffs. He needed to stay calm and collected. He needed to be... Fuck... Fuuuuckk!Jungkook had been saving up for the shop's expansion. He can use that money to buy the lot instead, but then that will leave him literally broke - as in no-penny-to-his-name broke. And then there's Yoo Na.What the hell was he going to do with Yoo Na?Yoo Na works three part time jobs just to support her college education - the tattoo shop being her main source of income. If Jungkook's shop fails, Yoo Na will have to consider taking a year off uni.Jungkook can't have that, especially when she was so close to graduating. Yoo Na is the closest to a little sister he'll have in his life, having been raised by the same foster parents. When their foster parent relinquished their guardianship when Yoo Na turned 18, Jungkook, being eight years older, swore he'd be the best big brother to her as he could, even when they don't share a drop of blood. He ran his fingers through his hair pulling at the roots. Jungkook needed to think through the haze of panic that was quickly rising to the surface. He stopped pacing - when did he start pacing? "Mr. Jeon, what will happen to us now? Unless you stumbled across a big fortune..." Yoo Na said in a small voice, almost breaking. Despite his misgivings, Jungkook's mind strayed towards the fortune that his aunt had left him. Yoo Na didn't know about the money, she only knew of the apartment. Now he felt bad about keeping this from her when her future is also at stake. If it was up to him, he would never touch that fortune. He didn't want to have anything to do with it. But now... No. There will be other ways; other solutions, right?"Oppa, what are we going to do?"Jungkook turned to Yoo Na determinedly and gave her a small smile with a confidence he didn't have, "I'll take care of it. Don't worry, yeah?"Yoo Na hesitated but nodded, aggressively wiping away the tear that escaped from her eyes.Jungkook cleared his throat to keep his voice from breaking, "How about we close the shop for today? I'll think of something before the month is up, I promise." Jungkook needed to clear his head and so he went to the only place he could think of."Hyung..." he said as soon as the door opened. His face must have reflected his worries because Yoongi immediately stepped aside and ushered him in."What happened?" Yoongi asked as he went to open his fridge. He took out two cans of beer and handed one to Jungkook.Jungkook didn't know where to start, but he did anyway. He told Yoongi about the ultimatum given to him by Mr. Ng, about his savings, about not having enough money if he decided to buy the lot.Yoongi listened patiently and nodded at the right intervals, but he never interrupted him. And Jungkook was eternally grateful. Yoongi had been a great source of strength and comfort for Jungkook. He didn't know where he would be if Yoongi didn't take him in the moment he turned eighteen. Yoongi showed him what familial love could feel like; something he had almost forgotten when his parent died when he was nine years old. When he was done, a comfortable silence fell between them. Jungkook knew Yoongi was weighing his words in his mind, trying to come up with the best advice he could offer."Jungkook, do you want solutions or do you want comfort?" Yoongi said at last. It was always like this with Yoongi. Back when he was an insecure eighteen years old full of anger issues, Yoongi looked at him with patience and understanding - even after he pulled what could be considered a tantrum.Yoongi would wait until the last embers of Jungkook's anger were snuffed out and then he would ask, "Do you want comfort or solutions?". Jungkook always answered either one. Now, Jungkook threw Yoongi a lopsided grin, "Both," he answered honestly and Yoongi nodded. The other man moved from the ottoman to the loveseat beside Jungkook, and placed a strong, comforting hand on his back, rubbing it gently up and down. Yoongi's voice was calm and soothing when he said at last, "I could lend you money, Kook. You only need to ask, but even with that, I don't think it'll be enough."Jungkook's heart swelled in appreciation, he felt the pinprick of tears, "It's okay, hyung. I don't want to burden anyone. I just... I feel so lost. Maybe it's time to let it go?""JK, listen. You don't have to go to extremes. Things are not always black and white, there will be other solutions. How about you tap into the inheritance from your aunt, yeah? I think this is the best thing you can use it for."Yoongi meant well, Jungkook knew. But his response came out more forcefully than he intended, "No,""I don't want to use a dead lady's money for my own dreams, hyung."Yoongi's hand, which was still gently doing a soothing, caressing motion at Jungkook's back, froze. The other man shifted in his seat to better face Jungkook, "The "dead lady" you speak of was your aunt, Jeon Jungkook. You should put some respect to her name."He was being reprimanded, albeit gently, and Jungkook deserved it. And yet, his stubbornness refused to back down. He raked his hand through his hair and let out a frustrated groan."Yoongi hyung, I didn't even know she existed until three weeks ago. She's nothing but a stranger to me! I can't possibly use her money, it's like... it's like stealing from someone's grave."Yoongi shifted again, facing the coffee table in front of them. He took a swig of his own beer and said, "At least give it a few days to think about it. It's either that or you lose your tattoo shop."
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
It was past 10 o'clock when Taehyung decided to go down from his apartment suite and head to the cafe. When he found Hye Jin's journal that morning, he was reminded how short life was and that the things you took for granted can suddenly cease to exist. It seemed like a wake-up call. So, Taehyung decided to have a slow morning and enjoy himself instead of rushing. He took his time and romanticized his morning routines; he thought of how Ghibli characters would start their mornings. For one, there would be tea or coffee, but since Taehyung didn't enjoy coffee as much, he sipped his Yuja tea with much more intention than usual, savoring its citrus flavor and floral-like aroma. He let the music warm his blood and let his anxious thoughts go, not worrying about what the day would bring. The cafe will survive without him for the first few hours. Taehyung already prepared the dough and other pastries in advance so his staff only needed to place everything in the oven. His cafe would not spontaneously burn down if he was late for a few hours; he knew his staff was competent enough; he trusted them.On his way down in the elevator- and while 'Merry Go Round of Life' from Howl's Moving Castle was playing in his head- he suddenly wished he'd meet Mr. Molded-by-the-Gods again. That would be the most Ghibli-esque thing that could happen to him. The thought of the stranger's strong hands on Taehyung's sides as the other steadied him when he was about to fall, warmed Taehyung's cheeks. His thoughts were still full of the handsome stranger's doe eyes and pierced lips when the elevator doors pinged open. Taehyung stepped out with a small smile on his face. His heart was still fluttering at the memory of the short encounter which happened a lifetime ago when he spotted a familiar figure just ahead. The soundtrack playing in his mind screeched to a halt like a record scratching against the pin. He froze on his track and his heart started pounding in his chest so hard he almost felt dizzy. Belatedly, he turned back as fast as he could, repeatedly pressing the elevator button in a desperate attempt to flee."Taehyung-ah!"Too late. The sound sent an icy chill down his spine, but Taehyung steeled his back and braced himself for the encounter as he felt the other approach him."What do you want, Seo Ji Won?" He said, refusing to turn towards the newcomer and keeping his voice void of emotion. He didn't want to give his ex-boyfriend any ammunition.Ji Won, slithered his arm around Taehyung's waist, "Come on, babe. Don't be a brat.""Don't fuckin' touch me," Taehyung said through gritted teeth, shoving Ji won away from him."Are you still mad about the last time, Tae? I said I was sorry!""Your apologies will never be enough-""I gifted you your favorite designer bag! I even gave you fucking diamond necklace-""And I had all of those returned to you and then some!" Taehyung countered heatedly jabbing Ji won's shoulder with his finger. "I don't want anything to do with you," Taehyung said with finality, moving past Ji Won and away from the elevators."Why won't you get over it?! It was such a small thing!" Ji Won hissed, forcefully grabbing Taehyung's arm so he was forced to face Ji Won again.Taehyung wanted to break Ji Won's nose and make him bleed. He had never been one for violence, but Ji Won would probably be the exception because Taehyung very much wanted to throw a punch. But Ji Won was taller than Taehyung and much broader and muscled than him. Taehyung didn't think he could get away without a scratch - and Taehyung hated getting bruised. So Taehyung opted to jerk his arm away and tried to step back, "Drugging me wasn't a small thing, you bastard!"It happened so fast. Ji Won raised his hand as if he was about to hit Taehyung and upon reflex, Taehyung flinched.Taehyung hated that he flinched.Ji Won let his hand hover then dropped it surreptitiously probably because there were people coming out of the elevator. Cursing, Ji Won grabbed Taehyung's arm again and dragged him despite his protests."Come with me quietly you brat or everyone will know what a fuckin' mess you are."They stopped within the vicinity of the mailboxes. The rows of steel mailboxes were located in a corner a few paces from the elevator. It wasn't as secluded but it didn't have as much foot traffic.Taehyung wanted to run, but somehow fear had cemented his feet on the marbled floor of the lobby and he was unable to move. His body had started trembling and sweat had broken through his back. He clenched and unclenched his fists just to make sure they won't go numb. His heart drummed violently in his chest as Taehyung scanned the premises for possible help. He desperately looked for any familiar face willing to make eye contact.Absolutely anyone would do.
Can someone please take me away from here
?
Jungkook found himself riding the now familiar street toward his apartment building. He didn't know when he made the decision to go home after talking with Yoongi, but here he was, looking for the best parking space for his Harley-Davidson - his baby which cost him an arm and leg when he decided to purchase it.It took him three years to save up enough money to finally own one and it remained to be the only thing he splurged on for himself. The thought of selling it to earn additional funds for the tattoo shop crossed his mind on his way home. And as the thought crossed his mind, his motorcycle gave a strange spluttering sound, jerking him unexpectedly forward."Oh baby, no. I will not sell you, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to think that," he murmured while giggling. He stroked the front gas tank gently like you would a horse for good measure.Despite the ridiculousness of the situation, guilt still flared in his chest as if his Harley was really sentient and could sense him wavering. But he couldn't stomach parting with his precious motorcycle - not when it represented so much of his history and hard work. There were other solutions to his pressing problems, Jungkook thought.
There must be.
As Jungkook crossed the glass revolving doors of the apartment building, he was welcomed by the sight of people lounging in the waiting area, the tenants talking with the receptionists at the front desks, and the people gathering in groups as they talked excitedly. It was strange how two weeks ago this place seemed so intimidating and overwhelming for him. And while he still tried to avoid people's gaze and still reflexively pulled his sleeves to cover his tattoos, he found himself looking forward to coming home to his apartment suite and listening to his neighbor's music choices. This place still didn't feel quite like home, but he imagined it was as close as it could get - especially when he didn't know what "home" actually felt like.He made his way towards the elevator, his body buzzed with a strange combination of adrenaline and exhaustion - from the day's unexpected problem- when a movement caught his attention. It was strange how his attention could zero in on his neighbor's delicate frame and soft brunette curls even amidst the busy crowd. His neighbor's serene face was now set in a snarl as he repeatedly jabbed his finger at the other tall, muscular man.Jungkook didn't know whether he should step in - if it was even his place to do so. He decided to stay put just a few minutes longer to watch the situation unfold. Jungkook told himself that he would step in if his neighbor looked to be in danger.Tension coiled in his stomach as he waited, and then he saw red when his neighbor visibly flinched from the other man's raised hand. Before Jungkook knew it, he had crossed the distance in long, purposeful strides. Ready to...
Ready to what?
He didn't know what he was going to do, but he had to do something. But then, his neighbor's eyes caught his and it was like Jungkook's fiery rage was doused with cold water. It took his breath away, leaving his mouth slightly open - Jungkook's mind was suddenly blank, except for the moment when his neighbor's wide, terrified eyes turned into something that looked like recognition and hope.Jungkook watched as his neighbor's gorgeous face transformed into a wobbly smile. The other jerked his hand out of the tall man's grasp, side-stepping him as he made his way toward Jungkook."Baby, there you are!" His neighbor cried out and Jungkook had the urge to look around to make sure that this handsome man was indeed referring to him.
He couldn't be, right?
Jungkook felt like he was having an out-of-body experience. He watched it all unfold as if in a trance, rooted on the spot. Belatedly, Jungkook noticed his neighbor's outstretched hand and he took it hesitantly. The other pulled him in for a half hug, surprising Jungkook even more. What alternate universe did I step into? Jungkook thought but he was pulled back to reality when he felt the other's soft lips against the shell of his ear. With a deep and velvety-soft voice, his neighbor said, "I'm so sorry, but please can you pretend to be my boyfriend?" Jungkook didn't know what convinced him: was it the desperation in his neighbor's voice? Or was it the cold, trembling hand that gripped his wrist? Or was it the puppy eyes that the other wore which felt like a punch in Jungkook's gut?Maybe all of the above.Jungkook turned on his charm like a flick of a switch.Yoongi and Yoo Na often commented on his ability to turn on his charisma when he needed something. It usually worked with his teachers and social workers before. He hoped it will be enough to convince whoever was harassing his neighbor because, by God he never knew he could feel this protective over a stranger. It was a strange yet exhilarating feeling - one he chose not to overanalyze and simply shoved in his mental vault.Jungkook slowly slipped his arm around his neighbor's waist, not losing eye contact, seeking permission. His neighbor's eyes widened a fraction in surprise but gave an almost imperceptible nod as if giving him the go signal. Jungkook couldn't help the lopsided grin that tugged at his lips."Hey, darlin'," Jungkook said, making his voice low and husky. Jungkok wasn't sure if he imagined the tiny gasp that the brunette let out, but Jungkook leaned towards him more until their chests were almost touching, "I've been waiting outside and was wondering what's taking you so long."It was jarring how Jungkook was too aware of his neighbor's responses - the way he gasped, the way his eyes widened, the way he swallowed in nervousness. But that wasn't really surprising, wasn't it? Not when the seed of awareness had buried itself from the moment Jungkook saw his neighbor dancing in his apartment and in every waking moment when Jungkook listened to the other's playlists. No, it wasn't surprising at all.And yet, Jungkook still wasn't quite sure the other wasn't a figment of his imagination because how could a person look like this? Like he was a Greek sculpture come to life?"What the fuck is going on, Taehyung?!" Jungkook heard the tall man screech.Oh, so his neighbor's name was Taehyung.Tae Hyung.Jungkook already loved the feel of Taehyung's name on his tongue even before he could utter it. Yes, these thoughts must be filed in his mental vault and must not be examined further. God, he almost forgot about the other person in this charade. Jungkook turned his attention- reluctantly- towards the other, and saw that he was a good-looking man as well. Aside from his tall figure, he was also wide and muscular with an angular face and crooked nose. The said man had an angry flush on his features and he looked ready to fight. Jungkook could take him on in a fight, he thought confidently."And you are?" Jungkook asked with a touch of insolence, which further drove the other man to the edge. Jungkook could swear he turned from red to purple.
This was fun.
"Don't pay him any mind, baby," Taehyung, hesitantly touched Jungkook's chin so his attention was back to Taehyung. Jungkook couldn't seem to stop drinking in the sight of Taehyung- not when the other had his gaze lowered and a slight blush dusted his cheeks."You slut!"Now that got Jungkook's attention, but Taehyung had already positioned himself in front of Jungkook as if shielding him from an attack which consequently prevented Jungkook from lunging forward."We broke up two weeks ago and now you're fucking some-"Jungkook's hand shot forward, barely touching the man's torso, but the other had a terrified look in his eyes which only proved how much of an actual coward he was, "I suggest not finishing that sentence," Jungkook growled, keeping his red hot anger under control."Let me get this straight, Ji Won." Taehyung said through gritted teeth, "we were done way before that."Taehyung straightened to his full height, his sharp eyes full of warning, "I told you not to come near me again. I'm warning you, Ji Won, the next time I see you, I'm filing a restraining order."Taehyung reached out to Jungkook's extended arm and gently coaxed him towards Taehyung. "Come on, babe. Let's go."There were two warring emotions inside Taehyung's chest. No scratch that.He was nothing but a ball of emotions feeling like he was about to burst into a million tiny sparks of light. What would Mr. Molded-by-the-Gods think if Taehyung were to explode into colorful confetti? Maybe then Taehyung didn't have to stop in his track, turn around, and face the impending humiliation. Why must his life turn out this way? Why can't Taehyung have a normal, heart-fluttering meet-cute moment like those in the movies where the soundtrack stays with you for a long time? Not him, though. The universe decided that his meet-cute with his potential love interest will be accosting the other into a hug and forcing him to be Taehyung's fake boyfriend.Taehyung had never wanted to be swallowed whole by the very depths of the earth until today.Fuck. Now they have reached the parking area exit which was safely hidden from the view of the lobby. It was the best time to slow down and let go of this handsome stranger's hand.
OMG! Was I holding his hand the whole time?! Did I just drag the potential love of my life from point A to point B?!
Taehyung slowly released the other man's hand, hoping he didn't block his blood circulation during their escape. He slowly turned around, cleared his throat, and prepared to see a look of disgust... or pity - Taehyung couldn't decide which was worse, in the other's perfectly sculpted face.Soft fingers gently coaxed Taehyung's chin up. When Taehyung finally gathered the courage to look up, he was surprised to see doe-like eyes gazing at him with such gentleness and warmth it nearly made Taehyung sob.The fear Taehyung felt of Ji Won, along with his rage and the awful way Ji Won made him feel came crashing into him like a violent wave. Taehyung felt a lump form in his throat and his eyes began to water."You're safe now. I will not let him get close to you while I'm here." Mr. Molded-by-the-Gods said gently, squeezing Taehyung's shoulders as if the other was trying to transfer some of his strength onto Taehyung. An unexpected chuckle came out of Taehyung's wobbly, shy smile."Thank you," he managed to say. Taehyung pulled himself together because this man needed a proper apology and an explanation, "And I'm so sorry for dragging you into this. I don't even know your name!"Mr. Molded-by-the-Gods let his hands fall away from Taehyung's shoulders as he offered his right hand for a proper handshake. With a bunny smile, he said teasingly, "I'm Jeon Jungkook, your temporary fake boyfriend."Taehyung whined but he couldn't help the laugh that escaped him, suddenly feeling lighter. "Nooo!!! I'm sorry, I've put you on the spot with that one." Taehyung said, hiding his face behind his long, slender hands. Taehyung was willing to bet that he was once again a blushing mess.Jungkook was laughing now, too."Don't worry about it, seriously. I was about to step in any way. I love playing hero, didn't you know?"Taehyung peeked through the gap between his fingers to see that Jungkook was now grinning at him as if they were already long-time friends. It gave Taehyung the feeling that maybe this wasn't so humiliating after all.Wasn't this what he had been hoping for all those weeks ago? For Taehyung to finally meet Mr. Molded-by-the-Gods again? Wasn't he the very reason why Taehyung started working the register at his cafe more often than necessary? And now, Taehyung was finally...finally talking to him!Taehyung even had a name - Jungkook. It sounded beautiful and Taehyung couldn't wait to say it out loud and feel it roll on his tongue.Taehyung finally decided not to be a coward about it. He lowered his hands from his face, took Jungkook's hands, and said, "I'm Kim Taehyung. Nice to finally meet you, fake boyfriend.""Finally, huh?" There was a teasing lilt to Jungkook's voice.
Shit.
Taehyung's mouth gaped open comically, unable to defend himself. Jungkook chuckled warmly and saved Taehyung from responding because he said conspiratorially, "I have a confession. I actually recognized you from the record shop."Taehyung felt warm all over, but it wasn't from shyness or humiliation. It was the kind of warmth one would relish and find comfort in when one was having an awful day. Taehyung can't believe that Jungkook - basically a stranger- can put him at ease with his good-natured teasing."Right?" Taehyung said a shy, boxy smile started to form on his face, "I hope your first...and now your second, impression of me didn't scare you."Jungkook shook his head, "Na-ah! I'm glad I bumped into you again. I- "A wailing ambulance passed by just then, stopping Jungkook mid-sentence as they both turned to see what was going on. When the ambulance passed, Taehyung's mind kicked into gear again, and remembered how to be polite and social."Say, do you want to grab coffee with me? I want to thank you for helping me at the record shop and now with my ex-boyfriend." Taehyung tried to sound nonchalant. What am I thinking, I don't even like coffee?! Taehyung's mind screamed, but he kept a pleasing smile on his face and hoped to God his eagerness did not show. The last thing he wanted was for Jungkook to think Taehyung was desperate to get to know him - even if that was actually the truth.Jungkook seemed to think about it for a few seconds before a lopsided grin graced his face, "How about we go out for some cinnamon rolls? I know the perfect place."Jungkook held out his hand to Taehyung, and without hesitation, he took it.To Taehyung's surprise, Jungkook was leading him to Mise en Place - his own very own cafe and bakery - just a few paces from the apartment building. Some part of Taehyung felt anxious because he didn't want his staff to see him on what looked like a date - although this wasn't really a date, it might look like one to his staff and he didn't feel the need to explain himself and... oh God, this inner rambling is exhausting. But a huge part of Taehyung felt giddy because Jungkook liked his cinnamon rolls so much that he suggested they go here instead of the go-to Starbucks at the corner of the street.Logically, Taehyung knows that his cafe was well-loved by his patrons. There were loyal customers who had always spent their time at the cafe for as long as it had opened. Some had brought their family and friends over. This was how his quaint, little cafe grew and had become what it was now. He'll always be grateful. But sometimes, it was nice to hear praises in person. Blame his praise kink.Without warning, his mind drifted to his neighbor - JK- and thought his neighbor and Jungkook could probably bond over their mutual love for Taehyung's cinnamon rolls. The thought made Taehyung giggle which earned him a skeptical look from Jungkook, but a smile was already forming on the other's lips as well."Oh, it's nothing. I just remembered that my neighbor mentioned that he loves the cinnamon rolls from Mise en Place," Taehyung's eyes suddenly widened, "That's where we're going, right?"Jungkook grinned and nodded, "Actually, I- " he was interrupted by a group of friends who exited the cafe just as Jungkook reached for the door. He ended up holding the door open for them while Taehyung smiled endearingly from the other side. When the group passed, they entered the cafe and Taehyung felt like he could finally breathe. It was like coming home which was not at all surprising. Taehyung had spent years here, baking his precious pastries with all the love and passion in his heart. The scent of coffee, cinnamon sugar, and freshly baked bread filled him with incomparable warmth. Taehyung wistfully wondered if Jungkook felt the same. He stole a glance at Jungkook to find him with his eyes closed, breathing in the scent. Taehyung swore his heart grew larger."Shall we look for a table?" Jungkook asked, turning towards him. Flustered at having been caught staring, Taehyung replied, "Anywhere would be fine."They found a seat near a row of wrapped cheese sticks, cinnamon sticks, and pre-packed buns which was perfect for Taehyung since he wanted to be out of his staff's clear point of view. This spot hid him from the register and from the wide glass window of the kitchen. While Taehyung pretended to peruse the menu - he somehow didn't want Jungkook to know that he owns the place - his curiosity won so he said, "I haven't seen you around here." Taehyung, once again, tried to be nonchalant.Jungkook looked up then. Taehyung could swear there was a hint of a blush on his cheeks when he answered, "Yeah, I just moved in... one of the apartments.""How do you like it so far?""It's been different. In a good way.""That's good to hear! The building can be intimidating, with its big and imposing structure..." Taehyung explained waving his hand as if that will explain everything about why the building was intimidating, but he saw Jungkook nodding so Taehyung continued in a more teasing tone, "but the people don't bite... much."The corner of Jungkook's lips tipped upward, "And you? Do you... bite?"Taehyung was so taken aback that he gasped and might have swallowed dust which turned into a coughing fit. Jungkook laughed, "I'm sorry! No, don't answer that. I was just teasing!"Just then, a staff came to get their orders, saving Taehyung from making a fool of himself some more.
