Moodboard by @minkookiecore It's a skull.A goat skull, to be exact.Jimin is no stranger to them. He has seen his fair share of different skulls in his life. But never like this. Not in this setting or situation. Usually, they are decorative objects for show, hanging above doors or fireplaces. Not this one though. Weathered by time and elements, this cream-coloured goat skull with its hollow eye sockets and twisty horns is attached to a birch branch. The sight alone would have been bizarre enough, but what truly captivates Jimin's attention is the half-naked man deftly manoeuvring said branch around like an incense stick. Is this real? Jimin asks himself. In a desperate attempt to affirm if he's awake and if what he sees truly happens, Jimin pinches himself once, twice, and even a third time—for good measure—before coming to the conclusion that he is definitely awake, maybe insane, but at least awake. It is a skull.A goat skull. On a stick. And a half-naked man waving that stick. "Why on Earth is he doing that…" Jimin mutters under his breath while watching in awe.It all started half an hour ago when Jimin, a dragon from the Eastern tribe, stumbled into the kitchen of his assigned abode to boil some water for a cup of tea after waking up too early for his taste. He didn't expect anything special to happen at all. He just wanted some tea, something to tame the unruly tendrils of fatigue, but Fate, ever the mischievous puppeteer, had other plans. As the water in the cauldron over the fire began to bubble excitedly, Jimin raised his tired eyes to look out the window. And there, he saw it.Amidst the drowsy remnants of his half-awakened state, he noticed the most bizarre scene, which was hard to distinguish from a dream. His mind grappled with the peculiar image, and Jimin thought his eyes were playing him a trick. They weren't, but being drunk on sleep would undoubtedly explain his initial confusion that troubled his mind after he spotted the awkward ritual.Little did he know that this serendipitous encounter would spark an adventure beyond his wildest imaginings, forever altering the course of his life. Now, a small eternity later, he still gazes with rapt enchantment at the mesmerising spectacle just beyond the threshold of his rustic cabin. The absurdity of the sight defies all explanation, yet it holds him spellbound. So, it is watching instead of asking what the other is doing. While leaning his chin on his crossed arms on the window sill, Jimin contemplates the discomfort that must befall the nimble man, who gracefully prances across the grass that looks wet and glossy. It must be very cold for him. Even now, the long nights carry the crisp mountain air descending from the snow-capped giants, serving as a testament to the lingering grasp of spring. It still takes a little while before the long-awaited summer embraces the earth. Keenly aware of it, Jimin cherishes the cosy sanctuary of his cabin, cherishing the enveloping warmth it graciously provides. That's why he considers it a mistake of the highest degree to venture outside before the sun's gentle rays have graced the earth with their warmth. It's stupid, reckless even, and fairly untypical for a dragon because dragons love heat. Everyone knows it. It's in their blood, coursing through their very essence. His grandmother always said that the innate yearning for heat is interwoven with their soul. Jimin, in perfect alignment with this fundamental nature, would rather lose the treasures of his hoard than walk through the frigid morning air. Hence, it is no mere coincidence that he chooses this very cabin every year as his temporary abode for the duration of the Spring Equinox festival. He loves it because it comes with a feature beyond measure: in each and every room, a radiant fireplace takes its rightful place, fulfilling Jimin's longing for the captivating allure of flickering flames and comforting heat. The festival is an annual tradition or rather a jubilation, to announce the arrival of the fruitful season. Year after year, the Northern, Southern, Eastern, and Western tribes meet each other at Denmore, a huge village nestled in the heart of the land. Within its confines, alliances are forged, trade relations are discussed, and friendships are sealed, embodying the spirit of unity among the different tribes. It is renowned near and far for its irresistible allure of potent drinks and delirious dances. Jimin's heart beats in perfect harmony with the festival's rhythm. This time is his fourth year of participation, and each festival has left a permanent imprint upon his mind. However, amidst all those colourful and captivating memories, nothing can compare or come close to this year's spectacle happening outside right now. There is a man with a stick, a goat skull ornamented stick. Jimin shakes his head when the man twirls around before he continues his jumping. It surpasses all comprehension, yet, he is undeniably drawn to its ethereal charm. Like a moth mesmerised by an elusive flame, he finds himself entwined in a situation whose true intentions and significance are veiled in mystery. Only the spirits above know why the man is running around in circles outside Jimin's cabin, swinging that ridiculous stick. He looks as if he's consumed by a frenzied fervour, which reminds Jimin of a group of peculiar woodland shamans he once saw as a youngling. Those shamans were dancing around a gigantic bonfire, dressed in animal pelts and bedecked with long bone necklaces. He doesn't know which image is weirder, the haunting image of the enigmatic woodland shamans from his youth or the absurd theatrics outside his cabin. Only one thing is for sure: Jimin finds himself teetering on the precipice of a fight between fascination and aggravation."Why is he doing that?" Jimin asks himself. For a last time, he rubs his eyes to chase the lingering traces of sleep away, but to his utter astonishment, it's neither a dream nor an illusion. It's simply Jeongguk. Jeongguk is a lovely shifter from the Northern tribe Jimin met when he arrived at the festival site three days ago. The moment is still etched into Jimin's mind.
Three Days Ago...
It was when the members of all four tribes reached the great plains of Denmore that dragons of all colours and sizes swarmed in from all directions on the first day of the Spring Equinox festival. Their majestic presence painted the sky with an awe-inspiring kaleidoscope of colours. It was a sight that seized the heart, leaving all the visitors in a state of awestruck wonder.
Amidst this captivating display, Jimin found himself in one of Denmore's fields. He had just arrived at the site when a dragon with four ebony horns on his head and matte-black scales covering his entire body descended from the frizzy clouds above them—as if summoned from his dreams. The moment Jimin laid eyes upon a majestic dragon, he knew that his curiosity transcended everything he had experienced in his life. It was magical. The wind was bristling around his nose and almost knocked him off his feet when the dragon changed into its human form after a powerful flap of its colossal wings. Time seemed to halt, reducing Jimin to a quiet state of breathlessness.
Dark, tousled curls graced with the deepest shade of brown framed the man's face, while his skin, smooth and shining, reminded Jimin of the golden goblets in his precious hoard. The tall, muscular figure emanated an irresistible aura, an undeniable presence that radiated confidence and unyielding strength. He was simply a presence among the other tired-looking shifters that were trudging through the muddy terrain, trying to find their tribe members after the exhausting flight.
Unfortunately, Jimin didn't find the opportunity to get a closer look at the other. The field emptied swiftly, like a fleeting dream slipping through his grasp, as everyone made their way to the designated stone huts reserved for the Spring Equinox festival. In the chaos, Jimin lost sight of the man, but his mind shifted swiftly to matters of utmost importance like nesting and hiding his precious hoard. Hence, he left the field without looking or thinking back.
Later, when the large bonfire was set ablaze, lighting up the starry night, warming faces and hearts, everyone came to the clearing in the nearby forest— the sacred place where the different tribes met in perfect unity.
With dancing and singing, the day slowly turned into night, Jimin found himself face-to-face with the intriguing dragon shifter who had stolen his breath away. They both stood silently in front of the apple cider stall, waiting for their empty cups to be filled with the golden liquid. The stall owner, an old lady who had probably seen the first dragon shifters when time itself was a fragile hatchling, took way too long for Jimin's liking. To make matters worse, the woman had to change the cask because the other was already empty, which delayed the whole thing even more. Jimin couldn't hide his mounting impatience when he threw his head in his neck with a long, drawn-out groan.
"Take a look at the bright side, precious. At least now, we have enough time to get to know each other," the stranger said with an amused undertone.
Jimin turned his head around to face the other man, head still craning backwards in an unhealthy way. He was very handsome from up close with soft skin and even softer eyes—but there was also a hint of tantalising trouble in them.
And Jimin liked trouble.
"You're talking to me?" He pointed at himself before finally moving his head into the correct position.
The other smiled softly. "Yeah, wanted to do that since I saw you at the end of the field earlier."
"You saw me?"
"Of course. How could I miss such a pretty man? I swear, I saw your copper hair sparkling like a rare orange sapphire bathing in the waning sun when I flew over the field."
Jimin had to laugh. "Does this approach truly work? The smooth-talking and all that?"
With feigned innocence, the man shrugged, his smile never faltering. "Smooth talking? No, my dear. I simply wanted to express the depth of my fascination and how you effortlessly captured my attention earlier on the field."
"You really know how to lay it on thick," Jimin chuckled, his grin widening mischievously.
Jeongguk winked playfully. "Maybe I exaggerated a tad."
"Well, at least you're honest," Jimin replied, his eyes twinkling with amusement.
"That I am indeed. I'm Jeongguk, and it's an absolute pleasure to meet you." The man inclined his head courteously.
"Jimin. It's mine as well," Jimin answered, bowing too.
"What a perfect name for a perfect dragon," Jeongguk remarked.
"You are doing it again," Jimin teased, his eyebrow raised.
"No, that was the full truth. I swear," Jeongguk insisted. "And to be honest, I may have exaggerated a tiny bit, but I really did feel something in my core when I saw you, and that usually only happens to me when I'm hungry."
Jimin opened his mouth to reply with a clever retort, but his words were interrupted by a wheezing cough. He turned around to find the cider lady, her face contorted in annoyance, had finally filled their cups. Now, she waited for them to move away from her stall. For being so slow herself, she now looked as though it was Jimin and Jeongguk's fault that everything took so long.
With an unamused snort, Jimin handed her a handful of copper coins, taking his cider in return. "Here you are, my generous contribution to your fortune, lovely lady."
The woman wordlessly snatched the coins from his hand and swiftly turned to the next customer. "Next, please."
Jimin had to bite his tongue but kept quiet.
Jeongguk smirked, "She's a real charmer, isn't she?"
Deciding to leave the cider lady and her sour mood behind, Jimin huffed and turned his attention to Jeongguk. "So, Jeongguk, care to join me? There are some logs on the left where we can talk about our deepest secrets."
"Let's start with the basics first, and if Lady Grumpypants over there–" Jeongguk waves his finger in the woman's direction, "decides to grace us with a barrel later, I might even share my most embarrassing tales."
Jimin raised an eyebrow playfully. "Oh, I see. We're going for embarrassment, huh? Sounds just as exciting. Can't wait."
"Then, lead the way, oh master of intriguing conversations," Jeongguk indicated to Jimin to go ahead.
Jimin smirked and motioned towards a wooden bench near the crackling fire. "Prepare yourself, Jeongguk. This could be the start of a legendary tale—or just a hilarious disaster. Either way, it's bound to be entertaining."
They settled down on the bench, their cups of cider in hand, as the warmth of the fire embraced them. Jimin took a sip of his cider and savoured the sweet, tangy flavour.
"So, Jeongguk," Jimin began, trying his best to maintain a serious expression, "tell me, have you ever accidentally set your own tail on fire?"
Jeongguk's eyes widened comically, a chuckle on his lopsided lips. "What a conversation starter."
"Ah, already avoiding the first question, are we?" Jimin teased, playfully peering at Jeongguk over the rim of his cup.
Jeongguk shook his head, still chuckling. "My, my, I can already feel it in my bones that this will be a night I will remember for the rest of my life."
"Still not answering," Jimin stated and clicked his tongue.
Jeongguk leaned closer, "Later. Formalities first, my dear Jimin. Fun can wait its turn."
Jimin sighed dramatically. "That's not how unforgettable nights usually begin."
"Oh really? How do they begin, then?" Jeongguk challenged.
Jimin's smile was roguish at that point. His voice was dripping with playful charm when he replied, "By answering me if you ever set your own tail on fire."
Jeongguk laughed once more, finding the question delightfully absurd. "But it's a pretty random question, don't you think? Why don't we start with something more conventional, like 'Hey, where are you from?'"
"I can see by the colour of your tunic which tribe you belong to," Jimin answered.
"True. So, how about: How old are you?" Jeongguk suggested.
"We are dragons. We basically live for at least a thousand years, and you don't seem to be nearing the end. So, age doesn't matter to me. Does it matter to you?"
"Not really, but I'm still curious to know how many springs you've witnessed," Jeongguk said, scrunching his nose.
Jimin rolled his eyes playfully but replied, "359."
Jeongguk ran a hand through his hair, a devilish twinkle in his eyes. "Ah, I'm only 307. Looks like today is my lucky day—I've always wanted a more mature lover."
Jimin burst into laughter, nearly spilling his cider. Jeongguk joined instantly, their mirth echoing through the festival grounds. They continued sharing tales of bad luck, amusing encounters, and weird habits, losing track of time as they delved deeper into their lighthearted banter.
As the bonfire crackled and the night grew darker, their laughter intertwined with the music and the joyous ambience of the festival. At that moment, Jimin realised that this Spring Equinox festival was starting to become the most memorable one.
Little did they know that their budding friendship and shared laughter would be the spark that ignited a series of courting rituals that they could never have imagined in their wildest dreams.
Like now, when Jimin is in his cabin days after their first meeting, watching Jeongguk doing things he doesn't understand. The crazy scene gradually escalates as the dancing gets wilder and high-pitched howls accompany Jeongguk's sharp movements. However, suddenly and without warning, Jeongguk screams one last time, spears the branch into the wet earth in front of Jimin's cabin and darts away. And this is by no means the strangest thing that will occur in the next few days. ●▬▬▬▬๑۩۩๑▬▬▬▬▬●
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
In the mystical dawn amidst the rugged terrain of Denmore, a figure with mesmerising feline eyes confronts Jeongguk outside his cabin. Leaning against the weathered stone wall and looking at his fingernails, the man has been patiently awaiting Jeongguk's return from his journey to Jimin's hut."So, have you blessed your courting as our ancestors did when the earth was still a lonely place?" the man asks, voice resonating in the air with a blend of genuine curiosity and mischievous mirth.Jeongguk's heart swells with pride as he replies, "Of course, Yoongi.""Excellent. With the stick and skull?" A faint smile curves Yoongi's lips as he nods approvingly."Aye, with our sacred courting stick," Jeongguk confirms, his eyes gleaming with joy. "I really wish for its success."Yoongi places a reassuring hand upon Jeongguk's shoulder. "Ever my golden fledgling. Well done. Your courtship will be blessed. Congratulations on finding a companion this year, even if it's a dragon from the Western tribe.""Don't say such words. The festival is to strengthen our bonds, not to dwell on our differences," Jeonggu scolds his friend, but he does it with a smile.Yoongi winks slyly. "I know. It was just a jest. Again, congratulations.""Thank you, Yoongs. I'm still quite astonished myself. It was fortunate I didn't skip the festival this year, as I usually do," Jeongguk happily replies as they approach the cabin's entrance, continuing their conversation."You see, I always encouraged you to come along, knowing it would benefit you—though I never imagined it would lead to love. However, it makes the tale all the better," Yoongi remarks, nodding in agreement."It is. It is," Jeongguk agrees while reaching for the door handle.Suddenly, Yoongi stops him and pulls him back. "Wait, did you get his shoes while visiting his cabin? So he knows your intentions to court him?"Jeongguk doesn't answer. Instead, he grins and presents a pair of boots, laces knotted together and draped over his shoulders. Until now, they dangled behind his back, making it difficult to see them if one wasn't explicitly paying attention to it."How could I forget the traditional 'Shoe Snatch'?! His heart will overflow with delight when he looks for his boots and notices that they're gone. He told me at the bonfire that he cherishes them as if they were a treasure in his hoard. He will be as happy as a dragon in a chest full of gold." Jeongguk beams when he looks at Jimin's boots."Of course, he will. Who wouldn't?" Yoongi nods in agreement. With shared grins, Jeongguk and Yoongi step into the cabin, ready to embrace the enchanting chaos that accompanies new love and courting traditions. ●▬▬▬▬๑۩۩๑▬▬▬▬▬● "Please, no!"Rattling and rumbling sounds are coming out of Jimin's secluded hut, nestled on the outskirts of the festival camp—a quiet place where only a few guest huts are scattered across the landscape. Quite convenient if one wants to have some privacy, but a disadvantage for those who are prone to being a little too loud. Then, you stand out like a sore thumb.Like Jimin in this case.Among the curious onlookers who caught wind of fervent noises emanating from Jimin's abode, a brave soul ventures closer. It is none other than Jimin's best friend, Taehyung, a dragon hybrid with dishevelled hair and sun-kissed skin."What is happening?" he asks one of the gathering crowd, apprehension written on his face. He hears the noises as well and worries about his friend.A woman with golden locks giggles into her hand. "I don't know what you think, but to me, it sounds like there's a new couple engaging in some passionate escapades." She exchanges a knowing glance with Taehyung when the thumping sounds get louder and louder. Taehyung raises his eyebrow. To him, the loud groans intermingled with cursed complaints bear a semblance more to a brawl than anything else. Yet, he seems to be the only one with such concerns, since next to him are brazen and mischievous youths cheering on the fictional romantic pair, their voices almost overpowering the loud noise around Jimin's cabin. However, a sudden roar, followed by a string of curses, startles the crowd. In an instant the onlookers are fleeing in a hurry. They transform and take off, quickly filling the sky with bolting dragons. The area in front of Jimin's cabin becomes a deserted canvas, save for Taehyung who dares to tentatively knock at the wooden door."Jimin? Are you there?"No response. The loud sounds are still coming from inside. Taehyung knocks again. This time with more force. Additionally, he screams, "Jimin!"When no one answers a second time, he slams both hands against the door, leaning his whole weight into it. The wood literally trembles under the pressure."Jimin! Open the door!"For a short moment, silence befalls the hut, interrupted only by the faint crash of something fragile falling to the floor. The shattering sound suggests that it has disintegrated into all its component parts, leaving behind nothing but a mournful reminder of its past existence. A deep sigh follows, hinting at not only the loss of something physical but also something cherished.Among the subtle whining, footsteps get closer to the door. Taehyung takes a cautious step back, bracing himself for the unknown that lies beyond. Suddenly, the door swings open from within, revealing a distraught Jimin, his chest heaving with exhaustion, and beads of sweat clinging to his forehead. A few strands of hair are already sticking to his damp skin."Taehyung," Jimin says, his eyes frantic."Jimin, what's happened? Are you alright?" Taehyung swiftly enters the hut and cups Jimin's face in his large hands, searching for any signs of injuries but finds none."Tae! Thank the spirits you are here!" Jimin reciprocates the gesture, his hands cradling Taehyung's head as well. Both stand close to each other with their foreheads within a hair's breadth from touching. So close that they can see the panic in each other's eyes. "They are gone, Tae! Gone! Forever! I will never see them again!" Jimin exclaims."Who is gone? What happened? Was there an attack? Jimin, are you injured?" Taehyung responds with even more concern etched on his face.Suddenly, Jimin withdraws his hands from Taehyung's face, tilting his head in confusion. "What? An attack? Where? I don't understand. Have we been attacked?" He tries to look through the windows, searching for any signs of a fight outside.Taehyung releases Jimin, trying to regain his friend's attention by poking his finger into the other's chest. "Listen! I meant in your house. You said someone's gone!"Jimin furrows his brows and replays his words in his mind. "I said what?""You said someone's gone. Forever. And something about never seeing them again," Taehyung repeats Jimin's own words, puzzled by his friend's lack of comprehension. Jimin's eyes narrow. "What are you talking about? I never mentioned another person.""No?""No. It wasn't about a who. It was more about a what.""A what?""Yes, a what, an object, a thing." Jimin waves his arms in frustration, hoping to convey his point."I'm sorry, I don't get it. Let me take a seat and then, you can explain it." Taehyung looks around, searching for a place to sit, but the chairs lie overturned, and the small sofa is buried under a chaotic pile of crumpled clothes that were carelessly thrown around. "I was talking about my boots," Jimin clarifies. "Your boots…" Taehyung echoes, still struggling to grasp the situation."Yes, my boots. My precious leather boots, the knee-high brown ones with long laces and the little metal plate displaying my tribe's crest. My favourite pair of boots," Jimin explains"Your boots are gone…" Taehyung summarises with a hint of disappointment in his voice."Yes, I can't find them. I left them by the front door, but they vanished without a trace. There are no boots, no hint of where they could have gone," Jimin laments."So, let me get this straight. Someone broke into your house and stole... your boots? And that's the reason you made such a fuss?" Taehyung asks, but it is more of a statement rather than a question. "Well, I… Wait, I didn't make a fuss. I was just searching for my boots." Jimin crosses his arms, already disliking Taehyung's tone."That's the reason why I thought you were attacked?""I still don't get as to why would you think that I was atta—""That's the reason why everyone thinks you performed a wild mating dance in your bedroom?""I did what?""That's why it looks like this in here?""Well, yes, but first, let's talk about the wild mating da—"Taehyung grabs Jimin's shoulders to shake him. "Are you kidding me?"Jimin is shaken back and forth with such intensity that he can't answer. Even less when Taehyung presses Jimin's face against his chest. "Don't ever do this to me again. I thought something had happened to you. I was scared. I thought you had a reason to scream like a bellbird under attack.""I…" Jimin tries to escape Taehyung's firm grip, but it's fruitless. The only thing he manages to do is to position his face in a way that he can at least breathe again. "I don't know what you mean. Nothing happened to me. Well, it did, but not in this way."Finally, Taehyung releases him. Jimin rubs his cheeks that got flooded with blood when his friend refused to let him go."Someone stole my boots, Tae. They must have broken into my hut," Jimin presses."I get it. I get it. Did they make this mess?" Taehyung nods at the broken furniture and wildly scattered cushions and blankets. Jimin looks at the mess and makes a face. "No. Guess that was me while I was searching for them."Taehyung snorts. "Did you at least see the burglar?""No, but I knew that someone must have been here. That's why I came back from the bedroom upstairs. I felt that someone had entered the hut and that my treasure was in danger.""Did they steal something from your hoard?""Yes.""Yes?" Taehyung asks, bewildered. Suddenly, his eyes glow in a reddish tone. It is frowned upon to steal something from the collection of other dragons. "I already told you: my boots," Jimin responds, annoyed. "Your boots?" Taehyung looks like he's quickly sobering up. His face reveals an opinion that he would rather not say out loud."They are part of my hoard.""Of your hoard.""Yes."Taehyung's eyebrows raise incredulously. "A pair of shoes qualifies as a treasure to you?""Of course they do," Jimin retorts.Taehyung lets out a low whistle through his teeth. "Well, I suppose we have very different definitions of 'treasure' then."Jimin swats Taehyung's arm. "Enough with your judgments. Help me find the thief. Those boots were the only pair I brought with me.""You can have one of mine later. I have an abundance of clothes—tunics, belts, gowns, coats, socks, shoes. You name it, I've got it." Taehyung snaps with his fingers before wiggling them weirdly in Jimin's direction.Jimin blinks, answering, "And you call me weird for considering my boots as part of my hoard. It's ironic coming from someone who dragged his entire wardrobe along because he couldn't bear to leave it behind. Did you force poor Namjoon to carry your trunks again?""No!" Taehyung waves his arms in denial. "He willingly offered to carry my trunks. It was his own free will.""Was it?" Jimin asks sceptically."Yes.""Did he say that?""Pardon?""Did he say: Hey Taehyung, shall I help you haul your gigantic hoard?""Well, not exactly in words, but his eyes spoke volumes," Taehyung responds, a flicker of unease passing over his face."With his eyes…""Yes, they shouted at me: 'Let me carry your precious belongings, oh divine Taehyung.""You sure his eyes told you that, not the crazy little voice in your head?""Yes, those sexy green eyes said every single word I just told you." Taehyung lifts his right hand and puts it on his heart. "I swear."Jimin shakes his head, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. Taehyung and Namjoon's courtship has been a peculiar journey, one that Jimin has witnessed from the beginning five years ago. He secretly hopes that they'll finally confess their feelings during this year's festival."Will you confess this year? Or is Namjoon doomed to leave the festival once again without a mate?" The playful sarcasm in Jimin's voice is dripping from every syllable.Taehyung's eyes gleam with determination. "No, no. This year will undoubtedly be the year I will finally allow him to court me.""You'll allow it? Wow. I don't even want to try to understand it, but please tell me that he already knows about his luck.""Of course, you silly lizard. I told him…with my eyes.""Oh, for diamond's sake." Jimin rolls his eyes, exasperation seeping into his tone. He is done with his best friend, but he needs to find his shoes, so he swallows the other things he wants to say. Otherwise, he'll be condemned to traipse around in his woollen socks until the end of the festival. And maybe, he wants to kick the thief's ass in the most painful way. Meaning with Taehyung's pointy leather boots that have those delightfully sharp metal toe caps. ●▬▬▬▬๑۩۩๑▬▬▬▬▬●
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
The sun shines teasingly on the tip of Jimin's nose as he perches upon a rustic wooden bench in front of Taehyung's hut. Swinging his legs carefree in the air, he looks at Taehyung's boots in awe. The polished metal tips shine brightly in the sun like diamonds. His best friend has an impeccable sense for attire."You like them, huh?" Taeyhung asks while joining Jimin outside.Jimin looks up at him with a smile that matches the brilliance of the treasured boots, nodding his head enthusiastically. "Beyond measure," he answers. "I must confess, the mere thought of that dirty thief plundering more pieces, like my robes, sounds exhilarating now that I've laid eyes on your glorious treasure chests. Especially that green silk coat."Taehyung's laughter fills the air like a joyful melody. "Well then, feel free to take it. And for the coming years, I will ensure that there are more garments awaiting you in my hoard."With a loud snort, Jimin dismisses the idea, punching playfully against Taehyung's arm. "No, no, no. Namjoon would have had to carry even more chests to this place. Don't do that to him."Taehyung shrugs his shoulders. "He would have gotten a kiss on the cheek for that.""A kiss on the cheek… That poor man. He deserves mountains of gold and diamonds for that.""As if he'd want any of that," Taehyung retorts. "Trust me, a tiny crab from the ocean would make him as happy as a hatchling that just caught his first worm. Namjoon's a beautiful soul with simple pleasures. His courting gift has to be meaningful, not sparkly.""I see you have already thought about the perfect courting gift for him. The idea of the crab didn't seem to appear out of nowhere, my dear friend," Jimin remarks with squeezed eyes. A devilish glint burns in them like a flame that found dry hay, ready to set everything ablaze. "I see your previous promise that this year is the year you guys will finally move forward in your relationship wasn't just some half-assed chatter.""Let's just say, I brought the crystal goblets just in case Namjoon got my subtle message that he's allowed to court me this festival," Taehyung reveals."Oh, the crystal goblets. The final courting gift before mating. Taehyung, Taehyung, Taehyung. You're that serious this year. I like it," Jimin teases."I am," Taehyung confesses. "And you should be too. That handsome dragon from the Northern tribe looked as if he were rather fond of you, and considering that you didn't even spare me a glance that very first evening by the fire tells me that he must have been good company."Jimin's cheeks flush at the memory. "He was—or he is. I really enjoyed the time with him so far.""How much?" Taehyung prods, a knowing grin on his face."So much that I hate myself for not bringing a scarf to Denmore," Jimin admits, running his hand over his face and pulling on the skin under his eyes. He's devastated because in his tribe, in order to express their intention of courting the chosen partner, they gift them a scarf. The scarf must be tied around the wrist like a bracelet. It's perfect for dragons because, unlike fine gold bracelets, the scarf can also be tied around the neck during cold nights. Dragons are as simple as that.Taehyung's face softens with empathy, knowing that for dragons, such a simple gesture holds the key to their hearts—a way of providing warmth and comfort that goes beyond material possessions. "Oh, Jimin. Do you plan to court him already? That's wonderful.""It would be, but unfortunately, I didn't bring a scarf, so there's no chance for me to start the official courting," Jimin says while looking down at his hands, trying to hide his disappointment.Taehyung pulls his friend into his side. "Oh Jimin, my poor Jimin. For how long have we known each other? Three hundred years?""Three hundred and twenty," Jimin corrects."Hah. Three hundred twenty years and you still don't know that you'll never be lacking anything when you're with me," Taehyung says. "At least when it comes to garments."Jimin throws a questioning look at his friend."Jimin, don't be stupid. I am the king of attire. I have hundreds of scarves in my hoard," Taehyung reveals with a smug smile. "Follow me inside and pick one for your intended.""But Taehyung, I can't accept this offer," Jimin protests. "It's a treasure from your hoard. And besides, it wouldn't have the same value if it didn't come from my own belongings.""Nonsense. Sure you can and sure it has. It's you, and you are my oldest friend, my extended family. Sharing with you is as natural as us dragons hoarding treasures. Consider it a family heirloom now," Taeyung insists, his generosity as boundless as his friendship. "And by the way, maybe I finally want to become an uncle to hundreds of little dragons. I have been waiting for three hundred twenty years for that moment. You need to hurry up."Jimin can't help but chuckle, pinching Taehyung's thigh playfully. "Shut up, you winged snake. I haven't even kissed him yet, and here you are, already wishing for me to lay eggs.""You say that now, but knowing you, my dear Jimin, it won't take long. The scent of love is already in the air, accompanying you like a cloud of smoke. Besides, we all know that once you set your mind on something, there's no stopping you. Mark my words, tomorrow you'll be soaring through the skies with your lover, just like in those romantic tales the old wyrm used to tell us in the nursery." Taehyung leans in, whispering conspicuously, "And we all know what dragons are doing there."Jimin rolls his eyes, pretending to be annoyed. "You are impossible.""And you are positively doomed," Taehung retorts, his eyes twinkling with delight. "Soon, tiny hatchlings will be calling you 'mommy'.""What did I do to deserve a friend like you?" Jimin rubs his temples."Don't you remember? You found me during one of those festivals and then decided that I have to be your best friend or you would set my tail on fire. Remember? Back when we were young and I was innocent," Taehyung answers with a shrug. "You practically claimed me like a lost treasure, and now you're stuck with me forever.""You better be quiet or I'll strangle you with that scarf and end our forever today," Jimin warns with a playful tone. ●▬▬▬▬๑۩۩๑▬▬▬▬▬● With a cheerful whistle on his lips, Jimin wanders along the cobblestone pathway through Denmore, his heart pounding with excitement as he searches for Jeongguk. Tucked away in a hidden pocket is a magnificent golden silk scarf, the customary and most important courting gift in Jimin's tribe. It's symbolism known to every dragon. It has to be the first courting gift, the first intention to provide and protect the potential mate. A scarf offers warmth and protects from the cold, just like the dragon will protect their beloved from dangers and provides a warm place for both of them. However, it also symbolises the strength of the couple's bond. A tightly-woven scarf is durable and won't break easily like a delicate golden necklace. It could hold a flock of wild goats.Jimin is excited that he will soon give it to the other, his anticipation palpable. Courting is something precious, something important, and he waited three hundred years for it. So, of course, he has no eyes or ears for anything surrounding him, overshadowed by his sole focus on the upcoming moment, or else he would notice the scene unfolding in front of him.Every year during the Equinox festival, Denmore is buzzing with life, waking up from hibernation. Younglings are running around, causing confusion among the elders who long for the good old days. The rhythmic clinking of blacksmiths' hammers accompanies the babbling of the lazy shifters who prefer watching over helping. The air carries sweet scents of blooming wildflowers with a hint of freshly-baked bread wafting from the huts in which some skilled shifters turn nature's goods into the most delicious meals.Usually, Jimin can't get enough of this, and deems it to be the most interesting aspect of the festival when all four tribes are practically living together for a few days, sharing their regional recipes for stews with exotic spices or presenting unfamiliar fabrics to those who can afford it. Yet, today, Jimin wanders along the path without even looking left or right. It is not long until someone surprisingly pushes against him from behind."Hey, be careful!" Jimin shouts at the man who almost threw him to the ground."Then maybe you should wake up and pay attention to your surroundings! All those young dragons spending their time daydreaming like fools," the old man complains.Jimin wants to say something, to argue that his attitude was rude and unnecessary, but despite the man being probably double his age, the old fellow has already vanished into the crowd. That's when Jimin realises that he's standing right in the middle of a bustling square, in which a group of three performers gathered together, singing songs of earth and fire. Their voices blend together effortlessly, resonating from the stone walls of the surrounding cabins.Members from every tribe are listening to them, humming along without knowing the text. A little girl is dancing and twirling around in front of the group, letting Jimin forget the encounter with the old man. Soon, he finds himself clapping along to the tapping of her feet when another beautiful voice joins the little choir.Following the sound, Jimin finds none other than Jeongguk perched on a stone ledge, eyes closed while singing the most beautiful notes. His heart flutters as he watches Jeongguk sing with such passion and skill. The melodious tones that emerge from his throat ripple through the air like a gentle zephyr. In Jimin's mind, he compares it to liquid gold, his favourite state of the precious metal. He leans against a wooden beam supporting the roof of the cabin behind him, watching Jeongguk sway with the melody, being lost in the moment. No one could have imagined that someone would succeed in enchanting Jimin like that—with a simple song. And it only gets worse when Jeongguk stands up to dance. The crowd gasps and whispers in awe because Jeongguk tries to match his movements to those of the twirling girl, the only difference being that he is standing on a narrow stone wall. Otherwise, their movements are perfectly synchronised. As the performance comes to an end, the crowd bursts into applause, showing their appreciation for the talented singers. They bow and say their thanks before they slip into the crowd, leaving only one man behind.Jimin's heart swells with joy when Jeongguk opens his eyes and immediately finds his gaze."Well, look who finally decided to join us here in the centre. Is your beautiful secluded hut too boring, my dear?" Jeongguk teases while hopping off the stone ledge. Jimin chuckles. "Oh, please, my hut is far from boring! It's a sanctuary. Perfect for my hoard as well. But I must admit, your singing has the power to draw even the most reclusive dragon out into the open."Jeongguk smirks, taking a step closer to Jimin. So close that Jimin can see the shiny pearls of sweat rolling from his face and neck. "Is that so? Well, I'll have to remember that for future reference. Maybe I can convince you to come out more often with my mesmerising voice."Jimin's eyes sparkle when he answers, "Oh, is that your courting strategy? Serenade your potential mate until they can't resist your charm?""Actually, I have other methods—and they seem to be working well considering you are here now," Jeongguk says.Jimin playfully rolls his eyes. "And how many hearts have you stolen with your enchanting voice, Prince Charming?""Counting you, it's a total of one. Enough for me to know that I'm quite good at it.""Count me as half.""Because of your height?""Because I am only half convinced…" Jimin warns Jeongguk with a raised finger. "Don't annoy me, or I will return to my hut quicker than you can blink.""I apologise," Jeongguk answers with a soft tone and a smile. "And now, tell me what brings you here today? Wanted to see me in all my glory?" he asks genuinely interested while still trying to wipe away the sweat from his face."Well, you see, I was just taking a leisurely stroll through Denmore without a destination, and then, I stumbled upon this performance," he says, gesturing towards the now-vacant stone ledge where Jeongguk had been singing."Oh, I hope that was a pleasant surprise," Jeongguk says."It was. I saw a handsome dragon sitting up there, singing beautifully."Jeongguk laughs, his eyes sparkling mischievously. "Handsome, you say? Well, I suppose I can't argue with that assessment.""Oh, you definitely can't," Jimin retorts with a wink. "But that's not the only reason I'm here." He reaches into his pocket, pulls out the golden silk scarf, and holds it up to Jeongguk. "I brought you something."Jeongguk's eyes widen with surprise. "For me? Thank you," he says and lifts the scarf to his face before he rubs it all over the sweaty skin, removing every drop with powerful swipes. Before Jimin can even react, he hears the horrified gasps around him. The other shifters from the Eastern tribe, their yellow robes and their horrified faces identify them as such, have watched the scene unfold without even hiding their curiosity."He did not…" a sturdy woman behind Jimin whispers."He did…" a man next to her replies."Did he just rub the sweat and dirt off his face with it? With that beautiful scarf?" another woman throws in."He did," the man repeats his answer a second time."With the courting gift?""He did.""What an ungrateful ass."It is very rare to find lovers coming from two different tribes, so no one would have expected the turn of events—least of all Jimin. He just looks at the crumpled scarf and the damp spots on it. Mighty storms are roaring in his ears while his mind blanks out. Jeongguk was supposed to take the gift and wrap it around his wrist like a bracelet. It would show that he is accepting the courting, wearing it for everyone to see. That would have been the proper way of receiving it, and yet everything turned out differently.Jimin doesn't notice that he's already moving backwards, he also doesn't notice that Jeongguk is calling him, irritated by everyone's behaviour. With trembling steps, he distances himself more and more from the place until he turns around and runs away with tears in his eyes, leaving behind a bewildered and regretful Jeongguk.Without Jimin in the square, the talk and arguing among the different tribes get louder and wilder, incited by the different opinions coming from all the spectators. Amidst the commotion, one man looks rather worried than angered, lips pressed together, two prominent dimples appearing. His green eyes are fixed on the shrinking form of Jimin while he pats Jeongguk on the shoulder and says, "Well, that went horribly wrong, didn't it? If you really like him and want to witness the next sunrise, I recommend you stay away from his best friend Taehyung. Take some time to reflect on what happened and find a way to make things right with Jimin." ●▬▬▬▬๑۩۩๑▬▬▬▬▬●
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
"You didn't do that, did you?" Yoongi asks while shaking his head. The words hang in the air like a heavy cloud, laden with disbelief but also empathy for his younger friend."In the north, we don't do things like that. How was I supposed to know about courting scarves?" Jeongguk retorts, frustration evident in the way he pulls his hair.He and Yoongi sit hunched over a weathered wooden table, the room illuminated by the soft flicker of a fire in the hearth. Jeongguk had just returned from his catastrophic falling out with Jimin. With a heavy heart and wounded pride, he decided to speak to his closest friend in the hopes of getting some advice. The bitterness of the encounter still lingers on his tongue, a taste he now desperately tries to drown in the amber depths of Yoongi's herbal liquor. The strong liquid burns his tongue and throat, mirroring the pain in his heart."That stranger with the green eyes had to fill me in, or I'd still be clueless about why Jimin was so upset," Jeongguk continues. "Apparently, it's an Eastern tradition. A symbol for a couple's bond and... something else I forgot. It's the first courting gift, and once you are given a courting scarf, you have to tie it around your wrist to show everyone that you honour the gift and accept the courting.""Which you didn't do," Yoongi says.Jeongguk sighs and closes his eyes, lowering his head until his forehead meets the unyielding surface of the table. "Yes. Which I didn't do. That's why everyone around was angry. It was a disaster. I used it to wipe off sweat, for growling out loud," he answers, the words muffled against the wood."It was indeed very unfortunate," Yoongi states.Jeongguk raises his head slightly, his eyes tired as he locks onto Yoongi's gaze. "Yes! And honestly, I don't understand how it came to that. I gave my all, you know? I followed our courting rituals and blessed our union with the traditional courting stick. How did it all go so wrong? Why am I so unlucky?"Yoongi's gaze softens when he says, "I don't know. Sometimes, luck has its own plans, my friend.""It's infuriating. This courting with Jimin is a disaster. He practically despises me now. Maybe I should fly home tonight.""In your state, you will only reach the end of Denmore before you will succumb to a long and dreamless slumber in the dirt.""Do you have to step on me when I'm already at my lowest?""If that's how you feel, then look at it this way: it can't get any worse." In the dim light, Yoongi's lips curl into a small, bemused smile, the tension in the room momentarily lifting. "I must admit. Even though I feel for you, I would have liked to see it. Would have been a hilarious tale to share around the bonfire."Jeongguk doesn't answer but lifts his head a bit above the table—only to slam it back against the surface.Quickly, Yoongi places a comforting hand between the two. "Hey now, don't punish yourself too harshly. Maybe this is an opportunity to learn more about Jimin's culture and, in turn, about Jimin himself.""No chance. Judging by the frown on his face, he certainly won't talk to me ever again.""Nonsense. He liked you and decided to start courting you. This means something. So, at least give it a try. Go to his hut, explain that you didn't know about their tradition, and apologise for your behaviour. He might not be aware of the whole problem of the different courting traditions as well.""And how am I supposed to do that? Should I just knock at his door and say: Hi Jimin, funny story, we misunderstood each other and you kind of overreacted.""If you do that, I definitely want to be there and watch the whole scenario."Jeongguk glares at him. "Not funny."Yoongi snickers and lifts his hands in defence. "I'm sorry. I'll try to be serious. I think you should visit him and it might be even good to bring along a meaningful gift of yours as well.""Like what?""Like chrysanthemums.""Chrysanthemums," Jeongguk whispers, recognition dawning on his face. "Are you sure? The chrysanthemums?""Yes, the chrysanthemums." Yoongi nods. "Think about it. It could be the perfect gesture. Show him you're committed, that you're devoted.""But Yoongi, do you think I can already give him the chrysanthemums? We just started courting.""You tell me. Do you think it's too early? Aren't you devoted to him already?""Hmmm..." Jeongguk looks out of the window, his thoughts a whirlwind.Yoongi watches him, crossing his arms. "If not, you should leave him alone," he warns, misinterpreting the silence.Jeongguk's head jerks up, his eyes wide. "No, I am. I really am. I want to be with Jimin, to court him. I want him to be my mate."A triumphant grin settles on Yoongi's lips. "Good decision. Let's raise a toast to that." He gets up to cross the room, retrieving another bottle from the shelf. On his way back, he wipes a little tear from his eye. "Who would have thought that I would see my dear Jeongguk finally giving someone the flowers of devoted love…" ●▬▬▬▬๑۩۩๑▬▬▬▬▬● "The flower of death? Are you kidding me? You want to give my Jimin chrysanthemums?" Taehyung screams at Jeongguk, who stands in front of Jimin's hut, a bouquet of chrysanthemums in his shivering hands.Jeongguk is taken aback by the unexpected storm brewing over him. The reaction is far from what he had anticipated. Especially since he had wanted to visit Jimin but met the man's friends instead. He can't even process it all when Taehyung lunges at him with a ferocity that catches him off guard. Luckily, his instincts kick in just in time, allowing him to sidestep the furious onslaught. His heart races as he barely avoids Taehyung's nails aimed at his throat."I won't let you cause any more harm to Jimin!" Taehyung's voice comes out as a venomous hiss. He jumps a second time in Jeongguk's direction, who swiftly turns around, flowers already cast aside in order to flee. Both race around Jimin's hut, Jeongguk in the front and Taehyung following him with loud growls. Only Namjoon remains standing in his spot as a silent witness to the escalating conflict. He looks at the two of them in disbelief."I hope they both survive, or Jimin will strangle me." ●▬▬▬▬๑۩۩๑▬▬▬▬▬● "Did I tell you that he's full of goat shit?""Yes, you did.""Did I tell you that he rejected me?""Yes, you did.""Did I tell you that I hate him for that?""Yes, you did."Jimin sits pensively on a worn bench nestled within the rustic interior of the healer's hut. Outside, the festival is in full swing despite it being the early morning hours.Luckily, the healer of the eastern tribe, Seokjin, is attending the festival as well. Denmore is no stranger to Seokjin's skilled hands. Every year, he has to treat not only injured wings but also egos.In Jimin's case, it's a severe case of heartbreak, agony cutting deep, coupled with a relentless headache that pounds in his temples. The prior night had been a sleepless torment. After spending hours pacing his hut, searching for comfort by rolling through his golden coins, Jimin woke up in pain. It was actually supposed to distract him from yesterday's futile attempt at courting, fighting the emotional poverty, but didn't do him any good in the end. With dawn's arrival came a vicious migraine. At first, he tried to ignore it, but when the wall started to charm him into banging his head against it, he acknowledged he needed help. Hence, he stumbled across the entire village of Denmore to see Seokjin, who only had to look at him once before he offered to concoct a special numbing tea."Did I also mention that I'd rather feast on rotting fish than endure another exchange with him?""No.""Huh?""Just kidding. Yes, you've emphasised your sentiments on that matter at least five times, Jimin.""Good. And I will definitely tell you a sixth or seventh time, just so you know I'm not wavering."Seokjin emits a resigned chuckle. "Yes, I feared so."Jimin folds his arms. "I promised Taehyung yesterday that I will ignore Jeongguk from now on."Seokjin hums and moves to the shelf crammed with various jars containing rare herbs and crystalline powders. The healer guides his fingers over the vessels, searching for the needed ingredients until he finds and takes them. With a hint of a swing in his steps, he brings them to a time-worn cauldron hanging from a sturdy tripod above a crackling fire. Flames of crimson and gold waltz within the hearth, their emanating heat coaxing the water to bubble peacefully. Ceremoniously, he throws the plants into the steaming cauldron. Immediately, a smell of feverfew and spicy ginger saturates the air."Are you sure that this will alleviate my headache?" Jimin asks sceptically. The bitterness is overwhelming, a taste too acrid for his liking. Deep inside, he already contemplates whether the whole visit might be a mistake."Rest assured, it will. Trust me. I always know what to do, or have I ever faltered when it comes to knowing what’s needed in the past?"Jimin's playful squint does little to mask the pain that lingers behind his gaze. "Well, there was that unfortunate incident when I set my tail on fire, and you seemed more inclined to laugh at me instead of helping."Seokjin laughs. "You'll never leave that story, won't you?""Never. It's practically become my conversation starter." Jimin grins as he adds, "My 'icebreaker'."Both cackle, their shared amusement wafting through the bitter air, elevating Jimin's spirit like only true friends are able to do.After a few moments, Seokjin hands him a chalice, its contents swirling like liquid stardust. "Drink this and retire to your bed once you get to your place. By sundown, your condition will have eased."Accepting the vessel, Jimin cradles it with his hands. "Thank you."Seokjin dismisses the gratitude by shaking his head. "Nevermind. Besides, I have another special kind of treatment to relieve some of your pain."Jimin looks up at his friend, tilting his head in question. Without further ado, Seokjin comes closer, wrapping him in a tender embrace. Jimin has to be careful that he doesn't spill the tea."And this is for your heart," Seokjin whispers into his hair.As tightly as Jimin gets hugged, he feels as safe as a baby dragon in its egg. Instant relief washes over him, and apart from the headache, he already feels a lot better. He hopes the future will be brighter. ●▬▬▬▬๑۩۩๑▬▬▬▬▬● This is definitely not what Jimin expected when he left Seokjin's hut.High above the world, hidden by the dark veil of clouds, a guttural roar thunders through the grey haze. A roar that resembles a raging storm, sounding like a tempest on the cusp of unleashing its torrential fury upon the peaceful earth.Jimin is on the way to his abode when he hears it. Confusion etches into his features as he looks up at the sky, searching for the source of that familiar, haunting growl. He knows that it isn't a mere storm. It's the roar of a dragon."Taehyung," Jimin says worriedly, his voice almost lost amidst the fervent sound. He has known that voice for three-hundred-twenty years, but usually, Taehyung isn't one to get into a frenzy. Wrinkles of concern furrow his brows as his fingers instinctively cover his ears in a futile attempt to shield himself from the loud noise. Taehyung seems infuriated beyond measure. The sheer intensity and volume of his growls worsen Jimin's headache that has plagued him since morning, a relentless hammering behind his eyes. The pain is as vicious as a serpent and lingering like a relentless leech, leaving Jimin feeling irritable and unwell. He hopes to get into his bed soon and leave everything behind."Where are you, Taehyung, and what on mother earth ignited the flames of fury inside your heart?" Jimin mumbles to himself. The constant thumps and stings already start to spread over his forehead, making him even crankier than before.Gritting his teeth due to the pain, he continues his way after stopping for a moment. He's almost in front of his hut when a colossal, pitch-black dragon breaks free from the clouds, its immense form casting a shadow over the land, accompanied by a much smaller yet infinitely fierce emerald dragon. They are Jeongguk and Taehyung.Jeongguk is the black giant one could almost feel sorry for, and Taehyung is the emerald beast, which is driven by an unquenchable rage, his eyes ablaze like fire in a forge. Each beat of his powerful wings brings him closer to Jeongguk. Snapping his sharp jaws, Taehyung tries to bite the other's spiked tail every time he gets a bit closer only to be pushed back again by the ferocious gusts of wind created by Jeongguk's enormous wings.Jimin watches them confused. "What is happening there?", he wonders aloud."Let's say Jeongguk was in the wrong place at the wrong time," someone answers unexpectedly.Jimin gets startled. "Namjoon!" he shouts, surprised. He hadn't noticed anyone sitting on the stone bench next to his hut.Namjoon gets up from his spot and walks to Jimin with a bunch of flowers dangling from his fingers. Standing tall, he boasts a commanding height, towering over Jimin. His well-defined torso gently tapers towards his waist. His legs are long and lean. Clad in the finest yellow silk in which silver and gold threads are woven into the fabric, forming intricate runes and symbols of ancient magic and wisdom, he's captivating. But what catches the eye the most are his dimples. Like playful winks from his cheeks, they add an enchanting charm to his already charismatic smile."Hi, Jimin," Namjoon greets with a warm voice that is soothing like fresh rain after a long drought. He waves at Jimin with his unoccupied hand."What brings you here, Namjoon?" Jimin inquires, a respectful bow accompanying his words. "And why do you bring me the flowers of death?""Oh, they are actually from Jeongguk," Namjoon answers, the response prompting a grimace from Jimin."After all that, he brings me flowers for a funeral? Is trampling on my pride and honour not enough? Must he bury them as well?"Namjoon looks at him pensively, raising a pointing finger into the air. "As you can see, Taehyung had a similar assumption. When we encountered Jeongguk earlier, he was standing here with the flowers in front of your hut, waiting for you—and Taehyung didn't take it well."Serves him right," Jimin says. "I don't want a suitor who taunts me with chrysanthemums.""Wait, wait, wait," Namjoon interrupts, "Let me share something with you before you judge Jeongguk. You know that I have travelled a bit in the past, learning about the different hemispheres and tribes, and I think I remember a tale from the north in which a man plucked flowers for his beloved.""Good for him. Don't care.""Jimin, listen! Please.""Okay, okay. Go on, but make it fast.""Where was I? Oh, yes. I remember that the man wandered through the meadows and forests. One day, he got lost when his mind was captured by nature's beauty. While stumbling through the foreign fields, he came across a vast field of chrysanthemums. It was a sight he's never seen before and brought tears of sheer luck and joy to his eyes. Their colours reminded him of the colourful robes of his mate. After getting to his senses again, he wanted to—""Namjoon, I'm tired and have a headache that is unbearable. Get to the point.""Right. Long story short, he collected the chrysanthemums and brought them to his lover as a gift. You see, Jimin, in their tribe, the meaning is different from ours. They don't see them as death flowers but rather as symbols of loyalty and devoted love.""But Jeongguk. He—""He did what everyone else in his tribe would do as well. In the northern lands, which means for him, chrysanthemums stand for longevity and life.""I…I didn't…" Jimin's voice trails off."You didn't know," Namjoon finishes the thought, a sympathetic smile tugging at his lips. "It didn't even occur to you that gifts could have different meanings in different tribes, did it?""No," Jimin answers with a small voice. Shame and worry creep up in his heart, leaving him breathless."I could imagine. I think he wanted to apologise for yesterday by bringing you flowers like the man did in the tale. He didn't mean no harm.""But Namjoon…""Yes, Jimin?""This means he isn't full of goat shit, doesn't it?"Namjoon chuckles. "That I don't know, but I've seen his state after you stormed off. Looked like a beaten youngling, this poor man. He had no idea the gift was a courting gesture, let alone that he tainted it with dirt and sweat.""But... but everyone knows about the courting scarf. It's common knowledge," Jimin throws in. He still struggles to wrap his mind around the implications—that it's not solely Jeongguk who's at fault."Everyone in our tribe, yes. But you see, Jimin, different tribes mean different traditions," Namjoon explains, offering perspective.Jimin's resignation is palpable. "It appears so," he concedes.Namjoon shifts the focus. "Talking about different courting traditions. Did you know Jeongguk had already begun courting you?""He did?" Jimin asks, surprised and confused at the same time. He thinks back at the past days, searching through his memories for a hint."Yes, he did. You didn't know better, like him. But maybe it's best for you to discuss this with him directly," Namjoon suggests."But how am I supposed to do that when he and Taehyung are both busy up—" Jimin stops and blinks. "Wait. That reminds me. Why, actually? Why is Taehyung hunting him like someone who stole something from his hoard?""Well, you see. You didn't know that chrysanthemums do not necessarily have to be death flowers. And neither did Taehyung. Instead of listening to Jeongguk's explanation, Taehyung pounced on him, ready to tear him apart. Luckily, Jeongguk was faster, and after running around your hut in circles, he shifted in order to flee, but you know Taehyung. He's..." Namjoon's voice trails off, searching for the right word."Stubborn," Jimin finishes, offering the simplest term for Taehyung's resolute nature."Let's call it protective. Yes. Taehyung is… protective when it comes to you," Namjoon chimes in with a grin. "He was convinced to go for Jeongguk's throat—all in your name."Their attention shifts upwards again. Taehyung is slicing through the sky like an emerald lightning, chasing Jeongguk relentlessly across the heavens. The latter, however, seems to be a master of evasion. Despite his imposing stature, Jeongguk twists and turns his colossal body like a weasel, cunningly outpacing every one of Taehyung's unyielding advances."But what can I do now?" Jimin asks, helplessness weaved into his words when he sees that Taehyung sends firebolts after the other. "They're caught up in this fight, and it's all because of a misunderstanding.""We need to find a way to talk to them. Approach Taehyung, fly to him and ease his concern. Reassure him that you are fine. His urge to avenge you is driving this frenzy, so you should tell him that you are not angry anymore. As for Jeongguk, show him your understanding and clarify your expectations. Communicate with each other. Give him a hand of forgiveness," Namjoon responds, his words as well-chosen as ever.Jimin's worry persists. "But I'll be met with Taehyung's firebolts before I can even begin. I'll get cooked like a chicken on a skewer. How am I supposed to evade this fate?""I would suggest for you to... 'wing' it.""Your humour is misplaced right now, Namjoon.""That lies in the eye of the beholder.""Be careful or the only thing that lies in your eye is my finger."Namjoon laughs. "Fair enough. I'm sorry. Usually, it's not in my nature to tease anyone, but I couldn't resist.""I can see Taehyung has a bad influence on you. All of this 'eye' stuff.""What can I do? I love him." Namjoon shrugs his shoulders, perfectly okay with the accusation. "But let's forget about that and talk about your love. You need to save him.""Looks like it." Jimin scoffs. "If I won't survive, tell my hoard I loved each and every piece of it."Namjoon's agreement is prompt. "Certainly.""Hey, aren't you supposed to comfort me, to tell me I won't die?""I can't lie, Jimin. But look at it this way, you're dying to protect your lover by sacrificing yourself. Isn't it highly tragic, yet so noble and romantic?""For you and Taehyung maybe. I prefer spending eternity with Jeongguk.""Well then, make an effort and be quick.""Remind me to warn Taehyung that he shouldn't allow you to court him.""Wait! He wants to allow me to court him?""He does. Tell me you didn't see it in his eyes?""Not at all.""That's what I thought. Maybe I should shout at him that you don't want him anymore. That should distract him immediately." Jimin takes a long breath before he throws his robes aside, readying himself to shift. He shakes his head and closes his eyes when his body changes its form, bones growing and moving to new positions while skin gives way to scales. "I'm so going to get burnt again. Guess that's what the wyrms mean when they say 'love hurts'."●▬▬▬▬๑۩۩๑▬▬▬▬▬●
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
"Ah, what a surprise this is, Jimin," Seokjin says, a wry grin tugging at the corner of his lips. “Seems like we'll meet once more this day.”"Hi, Seokjin,” Jimin responds with a forced smile, one that practically shouts embarrassment. The second time today, Jimin finds himself seeking solace within the walls of Seokjin's healer's hut. The aroma of dried herbs hangs in the air, an earthy scent that usually soothes his frayed nerves, but now rather reminds him of Seokjin's advice, which he failed to follow. Jimin can feel it, clear as day, that Seokjin isn't thrilled about his second visit, especially since he's not alone. Jimin brought company this time. Taehyung, Yoongi, Jeongguk, and Namjoon are also present. The healer's eyes are looking over them, gleaming with something dangerous, something raw and untamed. The room gets colder with each of Seokjin’s long breaths.Next to Jimin, Taehyung fidgets nervously, equally intimidated by Seokjin's demeanour. Both of them are nestled upon the cracked straw pallet. With their hair astray, they look like plucked geese—burnt, plucked geese, as if they got roasted over a fire. Yet where Jimin's cheek showcases big patches of scorched skin, Taehyung's face is concealed beneath a layer of soot, save for two eye holes etched out in a desperate attempt to reclaim his lost eyesight. His fists still bear the remnants of the carbon black powder. They are huddled together, seeking solace in one another's weariness, caused by Seokjin’s cold smile. Facing Jimin and Taehyung, in the opposite corner, Yoongi and Jeongguk are perched atop two upturned wooden buckets that now serve as makeshift seats. They don't look much better than the other two. One has blisters everywhere and the other’s skin tone has turned into an ugly brownish red. Their gazes meet in an unspoken exchange, a silent dialogue carried by shared suffering and embarrassment.Meanwhile, Namjoon stands with a stoic presence near the doorway, the lone figure untouched by Taehyung's inferno. He’s grinning and occasionally shaking his head.Seokjin's voice slices through the tension once more. "I must admit that when I bid you farewell this morning, Jimin, I wouldn't have expected you back so soon," he remarks, a scoff following closely. With a deep frown, he plucks smouldering hay from Jimin's dark locks. "And definitely not in this condition."“I’m sorry. In truth, I hadn’t intended to do that,” Jimin replies.Seokjin's answer is sharp and probing, "Yet, here we stand. I am curious to learn what led you into this predicament, my dear friend. Tell me, what happened?"A groaning sound from Taehyung draws everyone's attention to him. Seokjin briefly glances at Taehyung before waving his hand dismissively. "You know what? Actually, I don't want to know. Whenever you two are involved, there's always some peculiar story that even the old Wyrm can't make up," he says.Seokjin already makes his way to the large shelf with his salves and balms when Jeongguk steps forward, speaking from behind his back, "It wasn't their fault. It was mine."Seokjin turns to face Jeongguk, raising a quizzical eyebrow. "Your fault?"Jeongguk nods firmly. "Yes."His curiosity piqued, Seokjin inquires further, "And who are you, precisely?""I am called Jeongguk. Dragon from the northern tribe."Seokjin leans his head over his left shoulder, addressing Jimin while pointing at Jeongguk without hesitation. "Let me guess: he’s the one? The dragon full of goat dung you spoke of earlier?"Jimin stammers in response, his embarrassment and guilt surging. Weary, he steals a glance at Jeongguk, who nods in understanding, realising that Jimin must have spoken ill of him to the healer. Jimin feels pathetic when he sees the fading sparkle in Jeongguk’s eyes. He wants to console him, even rises on his feet to go to him when Yoongi suddenly bursts in."He's not full of goat dung! He's a decent dragon, perchance a tad youthful and spirited at moments, yet not the villain you all paint him to be,” he shouts at no one in particular but all at once, making sure to glare at each one of them.Jeongguk whispers and tugs at Yoongi’s robe, "Yoongi, please, calm down.""No! They almost killed you, and now we learn that they have slandered you behind your back!" Yoongi screams in outrage and pulls away from Jeongguk's grip.“What?,” Seokjin interjects, bewildered by the sudden turn of events, "Almost killed him?""Yes! You see, I was just meandering through the village when I saw three dragons locked in combat overhead. One of them was my comrade, Jeongguk, and these two," Yoongi points and glares at Jimin and Taehyung, "were chasing him."Taehyung blurts out, "I was merely defending my friend!""So did I. I had to intervene, or else you would have roasted him. You were two against one!" Yoongi stands up, his fury evident in his trembling body. "Listen, you green serpent, you can count yourself fortunate I didn’t peel off your scales.""I'm not a serpent! I am a descendant of the royal lineage of the Eastern tribe!" Taehyung shouts back, leaping to his feet as well."Your lineage doesn’t matter to me. All I know is that you intended to harm my friend, and only snakes possess such guile.""I never wanted to kill your friend!""You were this close to making a feast out of him," Yoongi laughs sarcastically. "To speak the truth, perchance, I did wish to scorch him when my rage blinded me, but he broke my best friend’s heart.”“That’s your justification? Can you not plainly say that you dislike something? Maybe speak to each other?” Yoongi pauses, looking in Jimin’s direction. “But to whom do I address these words? This young dragon here seems to be the same. Has a huge treasure in front of his snout but doesn't discern it. Or recognises it but abandons it immediately when an obstacle arises.”“That’s not true. I thought he rejected me.”“You fled without having a proper talk before.”“Because I felt ashamed! I beg your pardon, but I just couldn’t bear the idea of my future mate’s rejection! It pained me!”“Future mate?” Jeongguk says quietly from behind but gets ignored by the others. Only Namjoon heard him, giving him an honest smile and an assuring wink. The small gesture visibly gives Jeongguk back some of his former footing. Throughout this entire day, nothing of his former confident self was left, as the whole situation was and still is pretty much getting to him. Immediately, his back straightens a little and his gaze sharpens. “Even that doesn't justify sending your friend after him!” Yoongi shouts."I didn't do that! I even tried to rescue him upon witnessing what happened!” Jimin defends himself."Well, that worked out great, didn’t it?" Yoongi's voice drips with sarcasm. "So well that I had to tear you from Jeongguk’s tail whilst the green one still spewed flames upon us."Jimin gasps. "That was because I wanted Jeongguk to listen to me! But he wouldn't stop flying away. I had to grab him, or he would have fled, and not learned of my desire to make amends for my actions!""You wanted to apologise?" Jeongguk asks while trying to make his way to the front, but Yoongi shoves him behind his back, still doing everything in his power to protect him."Funny. When I am filled with dread for my life, I would assuredly halt my course to listen to someone… Not. Honestly, why should he have placed his trust in you when you destroyed it already with your actions before?” Yoongi sneers."Because I even positioned myself between him and Taehyung to block the flames. Jeongguk must have seen my attempts to save him," Jimin explains.Yoongi spits out, "It wouldn't necessarily have come to this if you had behaved like civilised dragons and not like capricious younglings.”“Enough!” Seokjin raises his voice, commanding their attention. He steps in front of Yoongi, warning him with a raised finger. "First of all, I’m getting headaches from your shouting. Second, considering that you talk about communication all the time, those are some pretty one-sided accusations on your part. And by the way, you are in a healer's hut, that means you are here to get your wounds healed and not to have your heads torn off."Yoongi only grunts in response, but Seokjin isn’t impressed in the slightest. He adds, "What I do not comprehend, by the way, is why this is happening now, subsequent to your arrival in a state of relative peace and quiet. That means there must have been some agreement before. What happened to that?""I have no fucking clue. I still don’t understand my purpose in this place, to be honest," Yoongi growls. His anger remains undiminished."Yoongi, stop. Your words are not helping at this point," Jeongguk whispers angrily to his friend."That was due to my intervention," Namjoon answers Seokjin’s question loudly, thereby nipping any further discussion in the bud."Ah, I see. Namjoon and his good old mind tricks," Seokjin replies, already guessing what might have happened. He knows that Namjoon is a powerful dragon, a telepath, who uses his powers rarely, as they can quickly become very dangerous. He can create illusions and change opinions in their head, but the possibility of going mad in the process is high. That’s why he only uses them when there’s no alternative. The situation must have been hopeless with the four quarrelling dragons, otherwise, Namjoon would never have intervened. And a little whisper in the back tells Seokjin that the current silence in his hut is also caused by another one of Namjoon’s interventions.“Let’s just say that voices within their mind advised them it would be better to stop all of this and seek your treatment.”“I think in this situation it was the only option. I can already tell that this is a vastly intricate matter. So, please, good Namjoon, for the love of all the gold and jewels within this realm, tell me what happened. I need to know how I can treat each one of them. Their garments don't allow me to see everything, and I don't want this little stinkworm here to snap at my fingers if I touch him." Seokjin points at Yoongi.Namjoon steps forward, his grin widening as he relishes the dramatic unfolding of events. "Well, it's quite a tale," he begins, "You see, they are all stupid.”“I am not!” Yoongi complains, breaking the silence.“Neither am I!” Taehyung yells.“Oh, would you finally, please, shut up or else I’m going to freeze all of you, making cute frozen sculptures for my cave at home,” Seokjin warns, his eyes turning a bright blue. He’s an ice dragon, and the others immediately understand the implications that they should be quiet again. “Everyone here seems to behave like a… how did you word it, little man? Ah, like capricious younglings.”“M’not little, you lanky giant,” Yoongi whispers angrily. “And not a youngling either.”“Then act in a befitting manner. So far you were all talk with barely any substance behind it. Yes, you have a point. Yes, they didn’t communicate properly, yes, they acted immature, but honestly, you weren’t listening either, at least not since you got here. Funnily enough, the only one behaving properly is the one who apparently was the bad one earlier.”Everyone looks at Jeongguk, who just mumbles, “I was never the bad one.”“Yes, I have already noticed that. So Namjoon, tell me more about how things came to this,” Seokjin demands.“Actually, it’s a string of misunderstandings—understandable ones, albeit misunderstandings nonetheless. Thus, none and yet all bear the blame for this situation, because both Jimin and Jeongguk contributed to the chaos. Each of them had forged their own judgments before listening to the entire tale,” Namjoon explains, “It all began when Jimin started wooing Jeongguk—”“He didn‘t start it. I did.” Jeongguk asserts, once again drawing all of the attention to himself. Jimin tilts his head in confusion, eyebrows knitted together, but Jeongguk only shrugs as if it’s clear as a crystal.Namjoon, momentarily perplexed, suddenly recollects, "Ah, indeed. You've enlightened me about that goat ritual. You’re right. I forgot. So, Seokjin, when Jeongguk initiated—""No," Yoongi chimes in, eager to provide clarity. "That's not when he initiated courting. That came a bit later. The goat skull ritual you mentioned is our ancient blessing rite, a way to seek the blessings of the primordial wyrms that watch over us from the celestial realms."Jimin is befuddled yet intrigued. "So that's why the other day you were jumping around with that goat skull on that stick?"“Yes,” Jeongguk confirms. Jimin must admit that the hint of a blush on Jeongguk’s cheek warms his heart more than would be fitting at this moment. It makes him pause to merely look at the other man. Despite the shy smile on Jeongguk’s lips, he still looks battered and tired, as if he hadn't slept either, not to mention all the soot and burn marks on his face and hands. The warm feeling in Jimin’s core rapidly turns into ice, making him shiver when guilt prevails once again. He feels just as bad as earlier when Namjoon told him that Taehyung tried to fight Jeongguk only because he himself misunderstood Jeongguk’s reaction after holding up the scarf.“A goat skull?” Seokjin asks.“In our tribe, there's a legend that the first wyrm was nurtured by a female goat. Hence, those animals are sacred for them and for us. Until a thousand years ago, dragons used to dance with real goats in their arms to please the wyrms so that they would bless the courting in return, but it was traumatising for those poor creatures. Now we only use the courting stick to preserve the tradition,” Yoongi explains. “Oh,” Jimin and Seokjin reply, their eyes wide with understanding.“I see. Interesting.” Namjoon nods in agreement."Anyway, that ritual occurs before the actual courting," Yoongi continues, pointing at Jeongguk. "He wanted everything to be perfect."“That’s true. Only after the dance did I start the official tradition,” Jeongguk says."And how did you do that? I'm still struggling to fully grasp it," Namjoon inquires, even the other three eastern dragons listen attentively, leaning forward.“By snatching his boots,” Jeongguk answers, looking as if he didn’t just reveal a crucial part of the ritual.“Snatching his boots?” This time it’s Taehyung who asks.“Yes. Have you guys never heard of the Shoe Snatch? Jeongguk blurts.Namjoon looks at Jeongguk with a raised eyebrow. “I… No?”Jimin, Taehyung, and Seokjin shake their heads, equally mystified. None of the Eastern dragons had encountered this ritual before, let alone as a part of courting."Yes. Jimin should definitely know. I mean, he surely must have been missing his boots already," Jeongguk replies, his smile fading as he notices the confusion on their faces. Apart from Yoongi, none of the other dragons seem to know this tradition.“Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait! What did you say?” Jimin walks in between them. “It was you?! You stole my shoes?”Jeongguk bravely confesses, "Yeah, to demonstrate my desire to court you.""That doesn't make any sense," Taehyung comments, speaking on behalf of their befuddled group who nod in agreement with his statement.“It does,” Yoongi responds, defending the tradition."No, it doesn't," Taehyung counters."Silence! Both of you," Jimin interjects, wanting to focus on understanding the situation instead of fighting once again. After none of the others tries to speak again, he turns back to Jeongguk. “Just to be clear: you stole my boots? My favourite ones on top.”Jeongguk stammers, feeling the weight of the misunderstanding, "I... yes... I mean... I suppose?""They were part of my hoard," Jimin states, emphasising the significance of the boots."Oh, I didn't…" Jeongguk tries to excuse himself, seeking understanding from the others. "I did not mean any ill. On the contrary, I…"“But stealing something from another dragon’s hoard is an ill deed,” Jimin says but gets interrupted by Namjoon, who gently guides him back on the pallet. Taehyung, however, is completely on Jimin’s side. “He’s right. You don’t do that if you are an honourable dragon. And again, how is courting related to stealing a pair of shoes?”"I think Jeongguk would explain everything if you would permit him. We all see where this path of miscommunication has brought us, revealing that none of us has genuinely listened to the other or tried to find out what was going on. So how about we sit back and continue to listen to him," Namjoon suggests, advocating once again for understanding and open-mindedness.Both Jimin and Taehyung want to interject, but Namjoon silences them by placing his index finger in front of his closed lips. Taehyung glares at him, and Jimin is pretty sure that his best friend is silently expressing his frustrations with his eyes. However, Namjoon remains composed, perhaps not fully comprehending the underlying meaning. For a telepath, his abilities are absolutely non-existent as far as Taehyung is concerned."Go on, Jeongguk," Namjoon encourages.“I know it sounds stupid, but back in the days, our ancestors would do it so that the other dragon couldn't run away before they finished their courting. It is silly, and yet we still do it,” Jeongguk explains with a sigh. “I just wanted to do it in the right way, which, for us, is this way. I didn't mean to offend you. I didn't know your boots were part of your hoard, Jimin.”“You couldn’t know,” Namjoon says absentmindedly while still processing everything and even Taehyung nods, adding, “To be honest, not even I, as his best friend, knew that until that moment.”“Hey!” Jimin shoves Taehyung, but the other only raises his arms in defence.“Be real, Jimin. That’s weird,” Taehyung says.“Coming from someone who thinks that his eyes are all he needs to express his feelings and intentions,” Jimin mocks.“Namjoon understands it.”“Namjoon understands nothing. Look at him! He’s oblivious about your fury and your current wish to pull out his claws,” Jimin answers.“Hey!” Namjoon interjects. “Oh come on, Namjoon. Taehyung is an enigma for you. You never understand his intentions, not now, not in the past. I may not have understood that Jeongguk was already courting me before I thought he was rejecting my courting gift, but you also failed to understand that Taehyung had already told you to court him this year,” Jimin explains.“Where did this sudden change of topic come from?” Seokjin asks, baffled. “When did Taehyung tell me that?” Namjoon wants to know.“When I packed my belongings before we flew to Denmore!” Taehyung throws in, currently forgetting his anger for everything Jimin-related. “You told me that you are looking forward to the festival and what it will bring. Hence, I blinked three times, signifying that you have every cause for joy, as you are permitted to court me this year.”“I did not… How could anybody understand this?” Namjoon asks. “Jimin comprehended my intent instantly."“Leave me out of this, I wasn’t even present when you did that, Taehyung. Besides, I would never understand your eye stuff, you had to tell me. Honestly, I don’t even understand my own concerns,” Jimin says. His gaze travels to Jeongguk once again, who already looked at him the entire time, uninterested in the other couple’s quarrel.Seokjin notices their silent interaction. He raises a hand with a quieting gesture. The room falls into an expectant hush. “Okay, listen! How about I patch you up for now and meanwhile, you shut up. All of you. I will treat you properly, then, you can fight until you die, for all I care.”Namjoon looks at him in confusion. “Excuse me?”“Not really,” Seokjin says and blinks his crystal blue eyes at him. “But I hoped it might quell the tension.”“How is this meant to ease the tension? You Easterners are very—” Yoongi starts to say, but Jeongguk swiftly places his palm over Yoongi's mouth, stifling the words.“Lovely dragons,” Jeongguk finishes Yoongi’s sentence. “And yes, we will hold our tongues now.”"I can’t promise anything," Taehyung quips, receiving a nudge from Jimin. "Very well, I shall shut my big mouth. I comprehend my wrongdoings of the past and will strive to be an honourable dragon in the future who will listen to others and talk for a change."“Perfect. Jimin, come to me. You too, Jeongguk. Let’s have a look at these wounds.”Seokjin starts to treat Jimin and Jeongguk, and for a while, the atmosphere in the hut is tense, but the dragons remain quiet, letting Seokjin work in silence.“That should be all for now. I want you both to apply this ointment," Seokjin holds up a small pot, "to the burns three times a day. Unfortunately, I only have one pot. So you'll have to share it. Which is perfect, because you can apply it on each other's wounds while you sort everything out.”Jimin and Jeongguk look at each other, ready to give everything a second try. Jeongguk grabs the pot without breaking eye contact with Jimin once. "We will," he says. It's a promise encompassing more than just the ointment.“Excellent, now that that's settled I'll take care of Taehyung so that he can discuss everything else with Namjoon afterwards. I heard that the two of them also have a lot to talk about—yes, talk with your mouth, not your eyes, Taehyung,” Seokjin says. “At last I will treat you, little dragon—”“Yoongi.”“Nice to meet you, Yoongi. My name’s Seokjin. As I said, afterwards, I will treat you.”“Why am I the last?”“Because these lovebirds require a moment alone, devoid of our meddling with their issues. And because I want you to stay behind and help me tidy up.”“Why me?”“Because you called me ‘lanky giant’ and I am petty.”“You weren't supposed to hear that.”“Then you'd better think about it next time. I assure you, unlike Namjoon, I can't get into the minds of folks. At least not without a knife.”“I believe this is the cue to show your wounds, Taehyung. So the four of us may depart and leave those two alone” Namjoon interrupts their discussion and pushes Taehyung into Seokjin’s arms. ●▬▬▬▬๑۩۩๑▬▬▬▬▬●
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Jeongguk winces with a soft "Ouch!" as Jimin applies the balm with a bit too much pressure on his skin. Jimin doesn't even notice as he's gazing contemplatively into the flickering firelight in the corner. Both have just returned to Jimin's hut after Seokjin sent them home, and Jimin has been quiet ever since."Everything okay?" Jeongguk inquires when he notices Jimin's distant demeanour. He reaches out, taking Jimin's hand in his own, coaxing him away from the fire and back to the present. "Huh?""You okay?"Jimin takes a deep breath, relishing in the soothing qualities of Seokjin’s healing balm. It smells faintly of thyme and sage, easing his inner turmoil enough to sort his thoughts before he does another stupid thing that might hurt Jeongguk again. He nods his head so that Jeongguk doesn't feel ignored, but it's a lie. By any means, he's not okay. All of the different emotions within him are like a raging storm, leaving him confused and unable to start the conversation they definitely have to have soon. Their recent encounters had been shaded by misunderstandings, leading to pride and flesh being wounded because they both forgot that every tribe works differently. It’s time to sort it all out. Right now. Right here where they are alone. As he continues the massage, his hands move with a rhythmic precision, a soft rumble comes from Jeongguk when all the built-up tension slowly vanishes like fog underneath the bright sun. It brings a small, genuine smile to Jimin's face."Does it feel good?" he asks. "Perfect," Jeongguk replies with eyes closed."Finally," Jimin whispers."What?" Jeongguk opens his eyes, looking over his shoulder."Well, finally, I am doing something well," Jimin answers without meeting the other’s gaze."Jimin… you've always done things well," Jeongguk says with a reassuring tone, turning around to caress Jimin's cheek gently. His touch is delicate but burns on Jimin's skin. "It was my mistake not to openly speak about my intentions, so I apologise for my actions that lead to this misery""No, silly, this applies to me as well. I never spoke up, not even after I gave you that scarf. I simply ran away, drowning in my own sadness even though I felt foolish afterwards. Deep down, I regretted it, but for some reason, I couldn't break free from my anger and act in line with my true feelings."Jeongguk's eyes soften as he gently strokes Jimin's cheek with his thumb. "I guess that's normal. Sometimes we act on a whim and regret it afterwards. This doesn't make us bad, it just shows room for improvement. I’m not fallible either, but I learned from it. Now, I know that I can't do the things my tribe usually does while courting. I have to change–""No," Jimin counters with a raised hand and a stern look on his face. "No, Jeongguk. You won't change anything. I appreciate you for who you are, for all your traditions and your unique ways. I don't want you to change just for me.""But this way, there will always be problems and misunderstandings between us.""Not if we talk about it.""But isn't the essence of courting gifts to convey our feelings through gestures and presents? Without words?"Jimin gazes away, contemplating Jeongguk's words. "Yeah, I guess there's some truth to that. But perhaps it's wrong to only focus on the end result. Maybe we should find out what the root of our problems has been so far.""And what would that be?""Expectations," Jimin responds, his eyes filled with sincerity. "Everything we've witnessed from our ancestors, families, and friends. We've been too narrow-minded, clinging to the familiar courting gifts and gestures of our tribes. When things don't align precisely with what we know, we end up feeling disappointed. But that's quite foolish when you think about it.""True.""So, we simply have to put aside all those expectations, erase what was scribbled on the parchment of love by our ancestors. Let's write a new one from scratch. Together."There's a pause as they allow the weight of their words to settle in. Not only Jimin but also the room seems to hold its breath, waiting for Jeongguk's answer. He gasps softly when Jeongguk takes his hand, tracing intricate patterns on Jimin's palm."I am once again impressed and delighted to have found such a clever dragon," Jeongguk says, "You're absolutely right. We've been looking at this from the wrong perspective. We don't need to explain the outcome a thousand times if we're open to everything from the very start.""Well, I do have my moments."Jeongguk replies with a charming smile, "Moments? More like centuries of brilliance."Jimin chuckles. "I see my little sweet-talker is back. I must admit that I missed it.""Then how about we skip the sad part in between and jump right into the future?""I like the sound of that."Jeongguk leans in, and their lips meet in a sweet, lingering kiss. It's a promise, an apology, and a vow all wrapped into one. "Jimin, from now on, I want us to be completely open with each other. I want to understand your traditions, your intentions, everything that makes you who you are."Jimin smiles and runs his fingers through Jeongguk's hair. "And I want the same, Jeongguk. I want to embrace all of you."Jeongguk's eyes twinkle with excitement. "Seems like we have a lot to discover together."Jimin giggles and playfully nudges him. "That's right. And it starts with us not stealing each other's boots."Jeongguk throws his head back, laughing, his eyes crinkled at the corners. "I didn't steal them. I snatched them. Like borrowing them indefinitely.""That sounds a lot like stealing.""But snatching only has good intentions.""It's not. Not at all.""Didn't we just agree on not having any prejudices?""Jeongguk, honey, that's not a prejudice. That's common dragon sense.""That's debatable.""Definitely not.""But if I give you really good arguments?""No.""What if I kiss you while talking, in order to distract you?" "Is that how we'll solve all our future disagreements?" Jeongguk closes his eyes, pretending to give it serious thought, before nodding enthusiastically. "Sounds like the perfect future to me.""Well then, convince me a little more." Those are Jimin's last words before Jeongguk catches them in another deep kiss. ●▬▬▬▬๑۩۩๑▬▬▬▬▬● A deafening and far too loud banging shakes Jimin's humble hut at the outskirts of Denmore. It's early in the morning and Jimin is still sprawled on top of a heap of gold, jewels, and gems—his treasures meticulously arranged to create a lavish bed.At first, his sleepy mind confuses the noise with a large woodpecker knocking on a nearby tree, but the woodpecker would have to be very close to create such a loud sound. "What in the dragon's den is this?" Jimin mutters, followed by a low growl, annoyed that something dares to disturb his precious sleeping time. The knocking shakes the thin wooden walls, jolting Jimin from his slumber. He might not be a light sleeper, but it's too loud even for him. Helplessly, he attempts to open one eye, but his eyelids feel like they're weighed down by a hundred-pound gold piece. When he finally pries one eye open, it instantly gets assaulted by a blinding shaft of sunlight piercing through the window. “It’s too early.” Jimin sighs loudly and turns around, snuggling once again into the comfort of his gleaming treasures, leaving the morning behind. With clinking sounds, the mound of treasures rearranges itself, taking Jimin once again in its tight embrace.Yet sleep eludes him.The relentless knocking continues, now accompanied by muffled voices. It's unwavering and, in Jimin's esteemed opinion, incredibly annoying. Whoever or whatever is the source of this commotion is a persistently stubborn being. That much is certain. "Jimin!"So, it's definitely not a bird. Jimin rubs his eyes, the sleep clearing just enough for him to recognise his name and the familiar voice that accompanies the banging. His heart races as he instantly remembers that Jeongguk wanted to visit him this morning. The sudden realisation jolts him awake, finally forcing him into action. With renewed determination, he pushes himself off his heap of gold and jewels. The gems cascade off his form like liquid light when he stands up.“I’m here!” Jimin shouts, hoping that the other would hear it outside."Jimin!" "I’m awake! Coming!"Spurred on by Jeongguk's insistent calls, Jimin scans the room for his dressing gown. It's difficult to find the flimsy piece of fabric among the shiny goblets and coins. The intruding light doesn't make it easier. The sun's rays are reflected by all the treasures scattered around, throwing thousands of twinkling rainbows and golden specks onto the walls. He has to dig small holes into the ocean of gold here and there until he finally finds it. Hastily, he throws the dark gown over his shoulders before he stumbles towards the door, careful that not a single coin leaves the bedroom. As he flings the main door open, he's greeted by a sight that would forever be etched in his heart. Jeongguk's radiant smile outshines the sun while the golden morning light peeks through his unruly locks, making him glow like polished gems."Good morning, Jimin!" Jeongguk says, thrusting a colossal wooden object into Jimin's hands without a warning. The force of the movement and the element of surprise momentarily takes Jimin's breath away, leaving him momentarily stunned and off balance."Thank you," Jimin wheezes, trying to regain his composure and examine the massive wooden gift that nearly broke his ribs. He turns it around, looks at it from all angles. It is a lumpy piece of wood—a huge lumpy piece of wood, that much is certain, but any other possible meaning evades him."That's…nice. I guess," he says, feigning an enthusiastic response, thankful that Jeongguk remains oblivious to his lingering confusion."Yes, in the northern lands, it's the first courting gift after snatching the shoes," Jeongguk's excitement bubbles over as he explains, "but I wasn't able to give it sooner as it is very difficult to find this around Denmore. Anyway, tadaaaa! It's here and finally yours.""Thank you, Jeongguk," Jimin says a second time, unsure what else to respond. He still tries to decipher the gift's meaning before risking another misstep. They just started all over again and he doesn't want to fuck up in the beginning."So, do you accept it?""Huh? What?""My courting and the gift. Do you accept it?""Oh! Of course, I accept it. And I absolutely adore this…lovely courting gift. I will promptly bring it inside and…and...make the most of it," Jimin stammers nervously. Jeongguk appears relieved. "Excellent! I'm delighted that you did after all this effort. You see, I've longed for this moment my entire life."Jimin takes a moment to look at the man in front of him. Jeongguk's eyes sparkle with enthusiasm. He is a rare treasure, and Jimin wants to have it. He knows that Jeongguk is the one for him, and he can consider himself very lucky that the other is just as wholeheartedly devoted to him as he is. It's as if the universe itself conspired to present him with the best mate possible. "Me too," Jimin replies softly. The peaceful moment gets disturbed by Jeongguk's growling stomach. "Oh." Jimin could have continued staring at this beautiful being for another hundreds of years, but one can't have everything—at least for now. "I'm sorry. Haven't eaten yet. I was so excited that I couldn't sleep or let alone eat something," Jeongguk apologises. It’s like a reflex that Jimin wants to hide the upcoming giggle behind his palm, but he still has the chunky piece of wood in them. The gift almost falls to the ground in the process. Once again, Jimin tries to come up with its meaning when the thought of tossing it into the fire quickly crosses his mind. His fire-dragon heart beats faster at the idea. Hence, he decides to move the conversation inside, where he can put the big chunk of wood into the hearth. The cold breeze from outside only reinforces this plan and the constant growling of Jeongguk’s stomach seals the deal.He will toss it into the hearth, letting it heat up the hut while they enjoy a small breakfast."Come in, Jeongguk. Let's get some food into you.”Jimin turns around and walks into the main room. Jeongguk closes the door behind them, following closely, fascinated by Jimin's little hut and the things that are scattered all over the place. "You know, I hoped you would like the gift. It's also my favourite out of all the different possible courting gifts," Jeongguk says."Definitely. I like it very much. I hate to be cold, and I bet it would provide a lot of heat."Jeongguk's face falls at that. "Heat?""Yes! I will toss it right into the fire. Or…not?" Jimin looks questioningly at Jeongguk and then at the piece of wood."No." Jeongguk shakes his head firmly. "No fire.""Haha…Okay. Sure. Yeah. It was just a joke. I will…will…""You have no clue what it is, do you?"Jimin hesitates for a moment, thinking if it would be better to lie in this moment, yet he decides against it. "No. I'm sorry. Not at all. For me it's just a…clutz."Jeongguk nods, understanding. "I see.""Jeongguk, I—" Jimin is about to apologise again when Jeongguk suddenly claps his hands, making him flinch."This is not a problem. Namjoon already warned us that this could happen when we continue the courtship. That’s why he suggested that in case one of us doesn’t understand the gesture the other should explain it.""Aaaahhhh. Yes. I remember. Okay. Let's start from the beginning and before I do something wrong again: please tell me the story behind this beautiful…clutz.""The Heart of the Holy Tree.""The Heart of the Holy Tree…" Jimin repeats, astonished. "Sounds poetic. Tell me more."Jeongguk chuckles. "Yes. We call it 'The Heart of The Holy Tree' as it's taken from the core of a dying willow tree."Jimin's eyes light up with newfound appreciation. "Wow. That's beautiful.""It is. It symbolises strength, resilience, and unwavering love. In the northern lands where I come from, willow trees hold a special place in our culture. They are known for their ability to withstand harsh winters and remain resilient throughout the seasons. A symbol for the love between two dragons that should be as enduring as the tree itself." Jeongguk’s gaze turns warm when he adds with a soft voice, "It's a way of saying, 'My love for you is as enduring as this willow tree, as strong as its core.'"Tears threaten to spill from Jimin's eyes. The meaning touches his heart in a way he hadn't expected when he had been staring at the piece of wood just a moment before."I'm deeply honoured to receive such a meaningful gift from you. Thank you.”"I'm glad you appreciate it."With the gift now understood, Jimin guides Jeongguk to a cosy corner of his hut where a low table is quickly set with a simple but delicious breakfast. As they enjoy their time together, their conversation flows effortlessly. Jimin is fascinated by Jeongguk's stories of his parents and their courting, while Jeongguk listens intently to Jimin's tales of his home in the East.Jeongguk, sipping his tea, soon says, "The food is delicious. I see you're not just a dragon with a heart of gold, but also a master at cooking."Jimin stares at the leftovers. It was merely a bit of dried meat and plain, boring porridge. Nothing exceptional. "It seems as if the flattery has returned," he comments.Jeongguk chuckles, his gaze locking onto Jimin's. "Because I know you like it.""I like honesty.""And I was totally being honest," Jeongguk insists."Sure.""Maybe you should see yourself from my perspective, then you would understand that every compliment doesn't even come close to your perfection." Jeongguk stands up and moves closer to Jimin, the air between them changing instantly, heating up with every step. "Jimin, there's something I want to do.""That is?"Without a word, Jeongguk gently takes Jimin's hand in his and raises it to his lips. The warmth of the touch sends shivers from his fingers right into his stomach. When Jeongguk plants a tender kiss on the back of it, the shiver explodes into hundreds of shooting stars. It tickles everywhere, leaving goosebumps in its way."I want to worship you, make you see what you mean to me," Jeongguk confesses.Jimin's breath catches as he sees the fire in Jeongguk's eyes. "That sounds like quite the proposal," he replies with a shaky voice.Jeongguk's lips curl into a playful smile. "Well, it's not a dragon courting without a bit of flair, right?"Jimin nods in agreement, a flush of desire warming his cheeks as Jeongguk's lips sensually glide over his sensitive wrist. "You certainly have a point there.""Do I?""Yes.""Lucky me," Jeongguk chuckles softly before he playfully nips at Jimin's skin."Jeongguk," Jimin moans with closed eyes.Encouraged, Jeongguk moves upwards, his lips delivering a trail of gentle, sensuous kisses along Jimin's wrist and underarm. The sleeve of the dressing gown gets slowly pushed upwards, revealing more and more skin. Jimin's breath hitches at the sensation."Tell me, Jimin," Jeongguk breathes against Jimin's heated skin, his lips tracing a scorching path, "what do you desire most?"Jimin's voice, laden with longing that could move mountains, quivers as he responds, "You."Jeongguk raises his gaze, locking eyes with Jimin. "Then you shall have me," he promises. With that declaration, Jeongguk's lips leave Jimin's wrist and find their way to his mouth, capturing it in a searing, passionate kiss. The world around them blurs into oblivion, leaving only the two of them lost in a whirlwind of desire and affection. Hands roam freely, tracing every curve and edge. Jimin's breath quickens, caught in the rapture of the moment. Jeongguk moves his lips over Jimin’s chest, each lick and kiss burning with fervour through the fabric that separates them."You are," Jeongguk says, "so incredibly beautiful. Everything I've ever wanted."As much as Jimin wants to surrender to the consuming desire coursing through his veins, he knows that they must proceed with caution. They have only just agreed to restart their courtship, and he doesn't want to rush things. With a heavy heart, he attempts to put some distance between them, not wanting to let the passion overtake them completely. "Jeongguk," he says, his voice trembling with need and restraint. "Stop." Jeongguk halts, a questioning look in his eyes. It almost looks a bit hurt. "Why? Don't you want me?""Of course, I do, but we've only just started all over again, and I don't want to rush things," Jimin explains, his eyes reflecting the sincerity of his words.Jeongguk seems to understand and his little frown turns into a shy smile. "I'm sorry. I got carried away."Jimin's fingers gently graze against Jeongguk's cheek, a soft and affectionate touch that speaks volumes of his feelings, even as he stands firm in his decision to wait for the next step. "Don't apologise," he says softly. "I want this, too, but I want it to be right.""I understand. Let's take our time. We'll do it right this time, Jimin, I promise."Jimin's heart is filled with happiness and relief, his feelings for Jeongguk deepening. Encouraged by Jeongguk's understanding, he can't resist a playful tease. "Even if you're still... hard?" He presses his hips against the unmistakable outline of Jeongguk's cock.Jeongguk's laughter ripples through the air, but the desire in his eyes is undeniable. "If you're truly determined to wait, you shouldn't tempt me like that.""Temptation is my specialty, Jeongguk." He chuckles, his fingers lightly tracing a path up Jeongguk's chest, igniting the simmering desire that lingers just beneath the surface.Jeongguk's grin grows wider as he leans in once more, his voice a low, seductive whisper. "Well, I'm definitely up for the challenge."Jimin gently places his palm on Jeongguk's chest, followed by a soft push to create a bit of distance. "No, not today. I've waited for you for centuries. A little longer won't hurt."Jeongguk captures Jimin's wrist, pulling him closer until their bodies are almost flush against each other. “Tomorrow, I’ll bring you another courting gift, and then, we can talk about waiting for a little longer again. Let's see if you'll still say that afterwards.”Jimin raises an eyebrow. "Is it that good?"Jeongguk's eyes sparkle with determination when he licks his lips and answers, "The best." ●▬▬▬▬๑۩۩๑▬▬▬▬▬● The next morning, the familiar sound of knocking on the door shakes Jimin's hut again, but this time it isn’t Jeongguk. It is Taehyung. Jimin curses the early risers once again, but when it comes to his best friend, he is as powerless as he is with Jeongguk. Consequently, he ends up in his living room, sitting on the sofa beside Taehyung, just a little while later."That's a beautiful locket,” Taehyung says as he cradles the necklace delicately in his hands, scrutinising every intricate detail from various angles. He had stumbled upon it on Jimin's table, and his curiosity got the best of him, prompting him to pick it up. Jimin doesn't mind. Taehyung is his best friend, and he wanted to show it to the other anyway. "I'm glad you like it. I had it made for Jeongguk after we met for the first time at the large bonfire."Taehyung raises an eyebrow in curiosity. "Oh, another courting gift for your sweetheart?"Jimin's cheeks tint with a faint blush. "Yes, I wanted to show him how much he means to me.""It's very pretty," Taehyung remarks. "I like its smooth surface."“It’s not the best part.” Jimin encourages him, "Open it.""Open it?""Yes. Inside is a little surprise. It's a lock of my hair." Jimin lifts his hair, revealing a short strand at the back of his head where he cut off the lock.Taehyung grins playfully. "Jimin, Jimin, Jimin. You're turning into quite the romantic, aren't you?"Jimin chuckles. "Well, when you find someone who makes your heart race, you can't help it."As they continue to chat, Taehyung examines the locket more closely. "It's exquisite craftsmanship. The intricate details on the left are stunning. A giant tree. And the tiny lines here at the roots, are they letters?"Jimin nods. "I wanted it to be perfect for him. And yes, those are letters. Our names, to be exact."Taehyung's eyes light up with intrigue. "Your names? I'm sure Jeongguk will cherish this gift.""I hope he does. I wanted something that he can carry with him wherever he goes after he rejected the scarf." A hint of a frown appears on Jimin's face, but Taehyung intervenes quickly. He pokes him in the forehead with his index finger."Shut up, and stop thinking. He really likes you.”“Says the one who roasted him just two days ago?”“Jimin. The past is the past. I'm a completely different dragon today than I was back then.”“No. You will always be the same silly lizard for me.”“Not sillier than you.” Taehyung gently closes the locket and hands it back to Jimin. “Even I know now that it wasn't Jeongguk’s intention to reject it. You two have something really special. I’m sure he'll love the locket."Jimin's gratitude shines in his eyes as he takes the locket. "Thank you, Taehyung. I'm just glad to have someone like you who I can share these things with and I hope you are right."Taehyung grins and pats Jimin's shoulder. "Anytime, my friend. Now, enough of the romance, let's talk about something more… exciting. Have you planned your next date with Jeongguk yet?""Actually, I have something special in mind. You know that waterfall in the forest at the edge of Denmore? I thought it might be a wonderful place for a picnic.""The one with the crystal-clear water and the enchanting surroundings?""Exactly. I thought it could be a perfect spot for it. Just the two of us, surrounded by the beauty of nature."Taehyung's eyes gleam. "That sounds amazing! And I'm sure Jeongguk will love it. But honestly, nature, water, nakedness, and the two of you together? It's a recipe for sex."“Taehyung!”“But it is!”“No, it’s not. I don’t plan to do that. Yesterday we were already so close to losing it and I had to stop it.”“Yesterday? Losing it? Are you keeping secrets from me?”Jimin looks caught off guard. Perhaps he said more than he should. “Nah. Forget it.”Taehyung whines, "Come on, you can't leave me hanging like this. Spill the tea."“No.”“Jimin.”Jimin fidgets with the edge of the locket, clearly hesitant. "It's just... Well, yesterday things got a little heated, and I felt like we were about to cross a line. But I stopped it."Taehyung's eyes widen with interest. "Oh, really? Tell me more. What happened?"Jimin sighs, looking both embarrassed and a bit conflicted. “I applied the healing balm on his skin and we kind of apologised and made up, and then, it started to get really intense. It was… The chemistry was off the scales and it was incredibly tempting, but I… I stopped it because I didn't want to rush things after we just started to talk again.”“Ah, I see. Building a strong emotional bond and such. Sounds…”“Mature.”“Boring.”“You are stupid.”“No, I understand. It’s okay not to rush things, but imagine… a little bit of a steamy dragon dance full of passion sounds… intriguing. I mean, you are hot and Jeongguk is hot."Jimin chuckles. "Aren't you head over heels enamoured with Namjoon?"Taehyung grins, revealing his teeth. "I am, but I'm not about to ignore a smouldering dragon in the room. Jeongguk’s a piece of treasure, and I have eyes."Jimin shakes his head, half-amused and half-exasperated. "Not the 'eyes' thing again, Taehyung.”"Don't be so hard on me, Jimin. I'm just living my love life through you and Jeongguk because Namjoon still hasn’t approached me—even after you literally told him that he is allowed to court me this year.”“Oh Taetae, my dear.” Jimin slings his arm around Taehyung’s shoulder. “Do you want to talk about it?”“No.” Taehyung sighs, his eyes reflecting the uncertainty he feels. "I just don't want to push him too hard. I value what we have now.""Taehyung, knowing Namjoon as we do, I'm pretty sure he's been planning this courting for ages but might have gotten tangled in the details. His mind is all about perfection, but his body might just be unable to deliver. Imagine him running across Denmore to bring you the scarf, then stepping on it and tearing it into pieces.""Honestly, that sounds exactly like him. I can already imagine him standing there, scratching his head, trying to salvage the mess." Taehyung chuckles weakly, though there are traces of despair and hurt in his voice. "Maybe I should start the courting myself.""Yeah, you should.""Hey, I thought you were my friend!""I am.""A friend would have told me 'No, Taehyung. You are supposed to lean back and get treated like the precious diamond you are.'"Jimin laughs heartily. "You are a precious diamond, Taehyung, but sometimes even diamonds need to be polished and cut. They can’t stay in the same form forever. I mean, what if Namjoon's overthinking turns into never-thinking? You wouldn't want to wait forever while doing nothing, would you?""I don’t know. I am a gem, but I don't want to turn into a fossil while waiting.""Exactly! That’s why you should make a move. You've got to meet him halfway."Taehyung groans but nods. "Alright, I'll give him a little nudge in the right direction.""Please don’t push too hard. He'll stumble for sure."Both collapse from the sofa, their laughter loud in the room as they roll on the ground, clutching their aching bellies, and flailing their legs in the air. It takes several long minutes of uncontrollable squeaking and hollering before they finally manage to compose themselves and climb back onto the sofa.Taehyung wipes the happy tears from his eyes and says, "Thanks, Jimin. You always know how to put things in perspective. I'm lucky to have you as a friend."Jimin returns the sentiment with a warm smile. "I'm just as fortunate to have you, Taehyung. You're the best."Taehyung's playful grin returns once again. "Now, let's get back to planning that romantic picnic. Do you want to bring wine to add some liquid courage, or do you want to be completely sober when you two inevitably fall over each other?"Jimin shakes his head in another burst of laughter. "You and your wild imagination, Taehyung.""I just want your best.""My best? And what might that be?""Stuff yourself with delicious food before getting stuffed by that handsome dragon.""Taehyung!""Kidding!" Taehyung giggles. "I'm just saying, don't stick too rigidly to your plans. Let it flow, like the water. What happens, happens."“I know. I know. You're right. But how will I know if it's okay to let go?""You'll see it in his eyes.""Will you ever stop with that?""Not a chance." ●▬▬▬▬๑۩۩๑▬▬▬▬▬●
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Under the gentle morning sun, Jimin and Jeongguk tread along a winding forest path, occasionally jostling each other playfully. One time, it's Jimin who bumps into the other with a cheeky giggle, and a few steps further, it's Jeongguk again. They behave like fledglings, revelling in the innocence of their shared bubble. The wyrm would truly roll their eyes. Their constant laughter mingles with the melodious bird songs overhead, while the towering trees shelter them from the world beyond."I love the smell of the forest," Jimin says. He raises his nose up into the air, inhaling the earthy scent of moss and the distant promise of the waterfall's fresh mist. It was a perfect idea to choose this place. He mentally pats himself on the shoulder."It truly does. I'm already quite curious about the lake you mentioned," Jeongguk replies. "So far I only know the fields and the village itself. Usually, I skip the Equinox festival.""It's just a few feet away. Taehyung and I stumbled upon it years ago when we were hopelessly lost.""Lost? Why didn't you just shift into your dragon form and fly back to the village? You could have easily found your way from above.""Well, it's a bit more complicated. We were initially on a quest to find a drunk Namjoon, who had gotten lost himself after drinking too much mead. Our search for him somehow led us to get lost in the process, too."Jeongguk eyes Jimin suspiciously, a playful glint in his gaze, clearly intrigued and teasing as he prods for more information. "Not the typical heroic tale, is it? You can surely imagine that I have so many questions now."Jimin chuckles and waves it off. "And I won't answer any. It's a tale best left without too many questions.""Boring.""Not boring. The best adventures are the ones where you don't know everything. Keeps things interesting.""Okay. Fair enough… for now."With each step, the sound of rushing water grows louder, and then, as if nature itself is unveiling a secret, the forest parts, revealing a breathtaking view of the waterfall. Crystal-clear water cascades from the rocky cliff, sending its glistening drops everywhere. A small rainbow has even formed at the top, reminding Jimin of the colourful fairy tales of the elders, the ones he loved when he was still little."Let's take that spot over there," Jimin suggests, pointing at a little area of luscious, green grass next to a huge stone. After arriving, he spreads out a woollen blanket beside the riverbank, its earthy colours blending with the natural beauty surrounding them. Jeongguk places the basket onto it and takes out freshly baked bread, an assortment of fruits, and a surprise cider—a bottle he had secretly tucked into the basket alongside their food. They sit down and the tranquillity of the scenery eases their minds. Both were nervous after Jimin suggested the picnic, but now, they couldn't be more content with the idea. They nibble on the delicious bread, savouring the warmth and softness of each bite, and share slices of fruit. Jimin laughs when Jeongguk plops one raspberry after the other into his mouth until nothing is left. The playful act adds lightness to the moment."What's this?" Jimin asks when he discovers the secret cider. He looks at Jeongguk, raising both eyebrows while lifting the bottle and shaking it a bit."Just some cider.""Some cider? What for?""For us. I wanted to make sure we had enough to drink.""Hence you brought cider not more water?""Cider tastes good. And fresh.""And water doesn't?""Not as delicious as cider. And I like apples.""You sure the reason you smuggled this in my basket is just the taste of apples?"And because I thought it would be a special surprise for a special occasion.""You're full of surprises, aren't you?""Only for special dragons, "Jeongguk counters with a wink."Am I that special dragon?""Well, you are someone incredibly charming and I guess that makes you special."Jimin grins and shakes his head. "Nice try. I have to admit. Everyone likes to be special."Jeongguk leans in, lips inching closer to Jimin's ear, his warm breath tickling. "Oh, you have no idea just how special."Jimin bolts up, sitting straight. His ears are ringing and burning. Quickly, he takes a deliberate sip of the cider, the cool liquid doing little to quell the growing heat between them. "Maybe you'll have to show me sometime.""Oh, I intend to." Jeongguk's gaze intensifies, and he reaches over to tuck a loose strand of hair behind Jimin's ear. His fingers linger over the shell of his ear for a moment. The fine line between an innocent picnic and their desires starts to blur and Jimin has to remind himself that they actually wanted to eat and talk. Trying to regain focus on the original purpose of their outing, Jimin places his hand on Jeongguk's shoulder and pushes him softly away."We did bring all this delicious food, you know. We should probably indulge in some eating before we get carried away.""Who said we can't do both?" Jeongguk puckers up for a kiss, and Jimin has to look away to resist the temptation. Going with the flow might have been Taehyung's advice for the picnic, but being a fire dragon, Jimin is more accustomed to blazing his own path rather than flowing with it."Anyway, I wish I had brought something else, not just the bread and the fruits. I'm craving something but I don't know what yet," Jimin says to divert the attention from delicate topics to the food again.Jeongguk smirks as he takes the cider bottle and pours more of it into their glasses, making sure their fingers brush as he hands Jimin a drink. "I don't know what you exactly want, but rest assured, I've got a bit of everything to cater to all of your cravings," he replies confidently, his voice low and suggestive.Jimin snorts with amusement. He's well aware of Jeongguk's bold and shameless flirting, and he secretly enjoys the compliments that boost his self-esteem. However, he's not ready to give in just yet. So he decides to play dumb. "Oh, do you? Where is that 'everything for my cravings'? I can't see any packets on your tunic, or is it hidden underneath your clothes? Didn't know one could hide food in their pants.""Oh, baby. I promise you I have enough to chew on in my pants," Jeongguk purrs, his gaze locking onto Jimin's lips, coming closer and closer.Jimin could slap himself. Right into his face. That backfired and he should have known."I provoked that one myself, didn't I?""Totally."Jeongguk is only a breath away from Jimin's face, the heat already licking at their skin. Jimin has not even seconds left to come up with something to divert the topic quickly or else he won't get to talk about anything today. He briefly considers how he can turn the tables in his favour. He grins when he knows how. With a sudden movement, he gets on his feet. Finally, breaking the tension."Well, then I should also take responsibility for it and make sure that we cool down again. You know, I've heard that cool mountain streams are excellent for this. Or perhaps we could go for a little walk. It'll help us digest all of that food."Jeongguk groans and dramatically flops onto his back. "Don't leave me hanging like that.""Sweetie, I'm definitely not leaving anything 'hanging' right now." Jimin playfully tugs at Jeongguk's arm. "Come on, lazy dragon. Time for a walk!""No." Jeongguk resists and Jimin has to put in some effort to pull him across the soft grass. "That was so hot right now.""Well, you should be grateful. I wouldn't want to cause a forest fire.""As if you don't love fire more than anything.""That's true, but only in my house, not everywhere around."Jeongguk huffs, but still lets himself get dragged over the floor."If you don't want to walk, let's go for a swim instead," Jimin wheezes."I hate every form of moving," Jeongguk whines, adding an adorable pout for effect.Jimin gives up and lets go of the other. "Says the one who was ready to move until all my desires were satisfied only seconds ago." "That's something else. That makes fun.""Walking is also fun.""Only when we are both naked and I'm chasing you around the clearing.""You are unbelievable.""Thank you. I like getting complimented.""Oh, I know you do." Jimin giggles freely, his laughter filled with genuine delight. He doesn't hold back, letting his happiness and affection for Jeongguk shine through his eyes.Jeongguk grins, taking a moment to appreciate Jimin's smile. "You know I only say those things to see that beautiful laugh of yours."Jimin blushes slightly under Jeongguk's intense gaze but continues to wear that warm smile. "Well, you're certainly succeeding. Keep them coming. I haven't laughed like this in years."Their eyes remain locked for a lingering moment and Jimin knows that he's falling for the other faster than a dragon without wings. It doesn't help to see Jeongguk's adorable smile when he turns around and gets on his fours to crawl to the basket again."Speaking of which, I've brought something that will make you smile even more.""Oh please, not another bottle of cider?""No, it's not. Wait a minute. Let me get it." Jeongguk's playful smile deepens as he carefully takes the basket into his hands, slyly removing the tablecloth from the bottom that conceals his surprise. Jimin's attention is immediately captivated."My next courting gift," Jeongguk says with an even wider smile as he lifts the hidden treasure out of the basket. What's revealed is a sheer, golden cloak made of the finest fabric, shimmering in the dappled sunlight, giving the impression that it's woven from spun gold. Jimin's breath catches as he gazes at the beautiful piece."Wow, Jeongguk, this is... stunning." Jimin reaches out to touch it, running his fingers gently across the surface. The material yields beneath his fingertips. It feels so soft that he gets giddy when he thinks about putting it on."I wanted to give you something special, something that would make you feel as extraordinary as you are. When I saw this, I knew it was the perfect gift for someone as remarkable as you—and Namjoon told me that you like gold the most," Jeongguk explains."Thank you so much," Jimin replies with a soft voice, his eyes not leaving the fabric."I thought you might like it.""It's incredible. I don't know what to say."Jeongguk leans in closer, capturing Jimin's gaze with his own. "You don't have to say anything, okay? Just know that I want to make you happy and cherish every moment we spend together."Jimin's heart flutters and he smiles warmly at Jeongguk. "You're doing an amazing job of that already.""Now, try it on." Jeongguk waves with the cloak, signalling Jimin to put it on.Jimin gazes at the piece for a moment. He wants to try it on, all dragon instincts in him urging him to wrap himself into the golden garment. Jeongguk laughs when Jimin snatches the cloak out of his fingers a little bit too fast, draping the golden cloak over his shoulders. The sheer fabric is as light as a whisper and comfortable."You look breathtaking," Jeongguk praises when Jimin's twirling around, the fabric shimmering with each movement. "Do I?""Absolutely.""And what happens now that I'm all dressed up for you?"Jeongguk pulls him closer, his fingers curling around the fabric in the front. "Now, I have to remove it, along with all your other clothes, unfortunately, to prevent it from getting wet.""Wet?""Didn't you want to go for a swim earlier?""No. Not anymore. There's no way I'm going to take this beautiful piece off again today."Jeongguk sighs. "I should have known and given it to you tonight. I provoked that one myself, didn't I?""Totally."As the day stretches out before them, they continue their leisurely meal, sharing stories of their past, present, and dreams for the future. At one point, Jimin mentions his grandmother, who had a similar cloak to the one Jeongguk gifted him. He recalls fond memories of her and her stories of finding her one true love in his clumsy yet endearing grandfather. Jeongguk listens attentively, his gaze warm and understanding."Your grandmother sounds like an incredible dragon. She must have been quite a character," Jeongguk says.Jimin smiles, his eyes softening with nostalgia. "She was. Her stories inspired me to go on adventures and not be afraid to follow my heart.""I'm glad you followed your heart today." Jeongguk's fingers gently brush against Jimin's wrist, and their hands entwine."I think I will have to follow my heart quite a long way in the future," Jimin says and they both know what he means. So far, they haven't given any further thought to the fact that they both come from completely different regions and that a flight to their respective homes can take several days. But they must talk about it. Preferably as soon as possible before any further misunderstandings can occur.Jeongguk's gaze remains tender. "And I'll be right there beside you, every step of the way. No matter where that will be."Jimin doesn't answer. He stares at Jeongguk and nervously chews his lip. Jeongguk looks a bit taken aback, his brow furrowing as he tries to comprehend the depth of Jimin's reaction."I mean, it's fine if you don't want to," Jeongguk hurriedly interjects, his words spilling out in a rush. "It was just a suggestion. We can take it slowly. I don't want to rush you into anything you're not—.""Come home with me," Jimin suggests, cutting Jeongguk off."W-what?"Jimin stands up, his eyes locking onto Jeongguk with newfound determination. With a steady hand, he reaches out, palm open, signalling for Jeongguk to take it. "Come home with me. I want to give you something."Jeongguk's eyes widen in surprise, the invitation catching him off guard. A swirl of emotions dances across his features, ranging from astonishment to curiosity. He hesitates for a brief moment, then tentatively places his hand in Jimin's."Home with you?" Jeongguk repeats, still processing the sudden turn of events.Jimin nods. "Yes, come with me. There's something I want to share with you, and I think now is the perfect time.""Okay." Jeongguk, intrigued and guided by the trust in Jimin's eyes, rises to his feet.Their hands interlace. They hastily pack up all their things and set off. As they set off, Jimin takes the lead, navigating through the quiet, moonlit paths with a confident stride. The soft rustle of leaves underfoot creates a natural melody, harmonising with the rhythm of their shared steps. In contrast to their earlier exchange, now on their way back, a peaceful silence blankets them. It takes them a while to reach the village and a little longer again to get to Jimin's hut.Eventually, they arrive. As they step inside, Jimin gestures for Jeongguk to take a seat in the main room."Wait here," Jimin says, disappearing into the little hallway that leads to his bedroom.Jeongguk remains seated, his senses heightened by the subtle sounds and scents enveloping the space. He rubs his hands together. It's pretty cold in the hut now that it's getting dark."Shall I start a fire in the meantime?""Oh, yes, please!"Jeongguk smiles as he strolls to the fireplace in the corner. In one smooth motion, he snatches up a handful of dry logs stacked nearby and with practised ease, arranges the logs in the fireplace, creating a perfect pyramid. Once everything is in place, he inhales deeply. His chest is expanding and his eyes glowing a deep shade of red when he suddenly exhales a narrow stream of fire onto the logs, making them crackle and burst into flames. The room warms up immediately, and Jeongguk looks proud and pleased with himself."I'm lucky you're another fire dragon and not an ice dragon, like Seokjin or a water dragon like Namjoon," Jimin says after he suddenly returns to the living room.Jeongguk turns around quickly. "Well, everyone has their strengths. Or would you never have spoken to me if, for example, you had felt the ice coming from within me?"Jimin grins playfully, "Would it be cruel to say 'yes' to that?""Absolutely," Jeongguk replies with a knowing smile. "We don't shame any kind.""But just picture it," Jimin continues, the corners of his mouth lifting, "trying to light a fire with an ice dragon or having a water dragon accidentally flood the living room."Jeongguk bursts into laughter, imagining the delightful chaos. "Still.""Alright," Jimin concludes, "even if you were an ice dragon, I would have accepted your courting anyway.""You sure?""Yes."Jeongguk wipes imaginary sweat from his forehead. "Luckily, I'm different from the ice and water dragons.""Oh, you are very different from the other dragons.""Am I?"Jimin nods, drawing closer. "Yes, you are. In fact, you are the first one to share the story of their life and dreams about a future with me within just an hour of meeting. No dragon has ever done that.""Well, I'm a dragon who knows what he wants.""True. Most dragons take their time circling the wanted treasure before making a move," Jimin says, taking a seat right next to Jeongguk, who has already returned to the sofa."And where's the fun in that? Life is too short," Jeongguk replies, shrugging his shoulders."Dragons live for a thousand years and many more."Jeongguk grins, "Well, in that case, I'm determined to make each of those thousand years extraordinary.""Ambitious, aren't we?""What can I say? I am a romantic at heart, and I just found the most captivating treasure which I want to cherish and protect.""I don't need protection.""Then, let me at least cherish you."Jimin playfully rolls his eyes. "I suppose I should consider it an honour to be a 'captivating treasure' instead of a nagging companion, huh?"Jeongguk winks, "Indeed, you should.""Well then, it's probably time for me to bestow a little treasury glamour upon you. So that we are even," Jimin declares."And how is that supposed to work?""By giving you this," Jimin whispers as he reaches into his tunic pocket, retrieving a small, ornate necklace with a delicate locket. His hands tremble slightly with the weight of his emotions. It's his next courting gift, the one he showed Taehyung earlier. He holds it out for Jeongguk. "Here. It's for you."The necklace glimmers in the soft light of the room, capturing Jeongguk's attention. He leans in, curious gaze fixed on the locket as he takes it from Jimin's hand."What's this?""Simply a little something that is supposed to remind you of me.""I don't need any reminders to keep you constantly on my mind," Jeongguk says, his gaze questioning as he looks at Jimin."Open it and you'll see what I mean," Jimin explains.Jeongguk struggles with the delicate lock, adding a touch of humour to the emotional moment."Be careful," Jimin playfully teases. "Inside is a lock of my hair. Don't lose it. It may seem simple, but for me, it feels like a part of my soul will always be right there with you, no matter where you are.""It's beautiful," Jeongguk finally says. He carefully fastens the necklace around his neck, letting the locket rest against his chest, close to his heart. It looks perfect on him, Jimin thinks. He loves that the necklace accentuates Jeongguk's strong neckline. "It looks great on you," he remarks."Does it?""Definitely," Jimin affirms, his fingers tracing along Jeongguk's collarbone. "Even though it would certainly look even better on your bare chest.""Bare chest?"Jimin nods while biting his lips."Do you mean… Shall I…?""Yes, I want you to get naked."Jeongguk hesitates for a moment, his eyes searching Jimin's face. He points a finger at Jimin. "Wait. Are you sure? I mean, we don't have to do anything. I'm fine with talking or watching you from afar. I would wait an eternity to get closer to you, so we don't–"Jimin cuts him off with a hand on his chest, covering the locket with his palm. "Jeongguk?"Jeongguk, slightly flustered, answers, "Yes?"Jimin leans in, their lips almost touching. "Shut up. You seem to be even more nervous than me.""Can you blame me? I mean, look at yourself! I'm usually merely talking shit. All bark, no bite."Jimin's voice drops when he replies, "But I like biting.""That's...wow." Jeongguk's eyes widen at the implication, his breath catching in his throat. Quickly, he throws himself on his knees. "Jimin, mate me. Right here. Right now. I, Jeongguk, hereby solemnly swear by the Wyrm of the North that I will love and honour you until we turn into stone."Jimin laughs. "We have just started courting.""Don't care. Who needs it anyway? Not me. I only need you." Jeongguk's words hang momentarily in the air, before he jumps up, reaches for his tunic and, in a bold move, rips it off his torso, the fabric tearing apart until nothing is left than bare skin. Shortly after, he kicks his boots off as well and pulls his woollen socks from his feet."I'm ready." He stands in front of Jimin, half-naked and barefooted, the remnants of his torn tunic scattered on the floor, revealing the dragon tattoos that cover his whole upper body and arms. They look like scales, comparable to those Jeongguk has in his dragon form. Jimin has only seen the giant, black dragon once from afar, but he hasn't been able to get this image out of his mind."You didn't have to be so rough with your tunic, but I appreciate the enthusiasm," Jimin comments, definitely impressed by Jeongguk's toned physique. "Are these tattoos like your scales?""Yes, somehow I feel more comfortable this way. I like being in dragon form and in this way, I have my scales in both forms"Jimin smiles and leans in, whispering, "It looks perfect on you."Jeongguk doesn't answer but crashes into him, kissing Jimin's soft lips like there won't be any tomorrow. And Jimin isn't any better. Eagerly and guided by an insatiable curiosity, he trails his fingers down Jeongguk's chest, feeling the warmth beneath his touch. Jeongguk responds with a low, appreciative growl."I see you like that," Jimin teases."I like everything you do." Jeongguk reciprocates with equal fervour, his fingers threading through Jimin's hair, pulling him closer. "Simply because I like you so much."Their kisses are loud and full of tongue and teeth. Neither of them cares. They enjoy every second of it. Every lick. Every bite. Every press of lip against lip. When Jimin breaks the kissing momentarily, he's breathless but with a gleam in his eyes. "You certainly know how to make an impression, Jeongguk."Jeongguk smirks. "Only the best for you."With a lighthearted yet bold suggestion, Jimin adds, "Then you should remove your pants as quickly as possible, too."Jeongguk's response is immediate and fervent, "But I want you to do it for me.""There's nothing I would rather do."With a nod of mutual understanding, Jimin begins to work on Jeongguk's pants, removing them as fast as possible. It's the last layer that hides Jeongguk's body from anyone's eyes and Jimin is the one allowed to see and appreciate the beauty beneath. The piece falls away with a gentle clatter. It's the only thing that can be heard while they hold their breath in high hopes of what'll happen once they take the next step."Wow," Jimin mutters. His blushing cheeks are probably a feast for Jeongguk's hungry eyes. Every fibre in him screams to be taken by this handsome specimen of a dragon.Jeongguk, now fully exposed, smirks in response to Jimin's reaction. "Impressed?" he teases, his confidence unwavering.Jimin grins, his hands instinctively reaching out to trace the lines of Jeongguk's body. "More than impressed," he confesses. There's no need to hide it. He knows that Jeongguk can probably see the answer written on his face anyway. Judging by his smug grin, he definitely knows."Come here, baby." Jeongguk, undeterred by the vulnerability of his exposed state, leans in, capturing Jimin's lips in another heated kiss.Gently, Jimin gets led towards the warmth of the fire. The flickering flames are loud and bright in the small room, revealing the contours of Jeongguk's muscles even more. "Let me lay you down," Jeongguk suggests, but Jimin shakes his head."Not yet. I'm not even naked yet.""Well then, it's about time. Show me what's underneath. Reveal your fire.""I have to warn you, I might get a bit too hot to handle."Jeongguk rubs his hands together, clearly up for the challenge. "I can handle the heat. Come on. Show me what you've got, my little flame."With a self-assured grin, Jimin lets the golden cloak cascade down his shoulders, the sheer fabric creating a graceful waterfall of gold. Jeongguk appears to hold his breath as the golden threads capture the flickering firelight, transforming Jimin into a living, breathing treasure."You're breathtaking," Jeongguk whispers.Jimin's smirk deepens, realising the scenario is unfolding just as he envisioned. They are dragons after all, and dragons, by their very nature, are drawn to treasures. It's an instinctive allure that runs through their veins like molten gold. It tickles underneath their skin, sending shivers down their spine, and sets their heart on fire. With a teasing look directed at Jeongguk, Jimin confidently grasps the hem of his dark blue tunic. The fabric that was stubbornly clinging to his form seconds ago eventually surrenders as he peels it away, revealing the alluring contours of his torso."Oh my," Jeongguk says, completely enchanted."Do you like what you see?"It's like a repetition of the moment earlier, only in reverse."More than words can say." Jeongguk's response rumbles through the air in a low, throaty growl. Drawing closer, he brings his trembling hands to Jimin's belly, tracing the smooth skin with fingertips that carry a delicious promise. A shared shiver courses through them as Jeongguk firmly grabs Jimin's waist, pulling him into a heated kiss. Their lips meld with hunger, and fingertips continue their dance along bare skin."Wait," Jimin breathes, gently breaking the kiss. Stepping back, he adds, "I'm not ready yet."Jeongguk groans and presses his knuckles into his eyes. "Jimin! Please, not again.""No, no. Don't worry. I am ready for that, but…" Jimin bites his lips and reaches for his trousers, "there's still something in the way."Immediately Jeongguk removes his hands from his face, opening his eyes. "Huh?""I need to shed this first." Jimin seductively unties the laces in the front, letting his leather trousers slip to the floor and pool around his feet, revealing more of his bare form. Of course, he enjoys that Jeongguk has his eyes fixed on his every move."Are you ready now?" Jeongguk asks when Jimin steps out of the clothes pile."Yes. Now, I am." Jimin nods."Excellent. I couldn't have waited any longer," Jeongguk replies, the eagerness evident in his voice as he rushes forward, effortlessly lifting Jimin into his arms. "Which way to the bedroom? The sofa is too small for what I plan to do to you."Jimin's eyes crinkle at the edges as he laughs while pointing in the direction of his bedroom. Jeongguk, nodding in acknowledgement, strides purposefully in that direction. His longing to hold the man in his arms in every conceivable way is ushering him forward. Jimin can practically sense Jeongguk's desire intensifying the closer they come to their target."Kiss me," Jimin speaks against Jeongguk's lips, who immediately complies and opens his mouth for Jimin to explore. In their passionate kiss, they bump against the walls along the way. The dust falls from the ceiling with every crash and they giggle into each other's mouths. Disregarding the pain, they leave no doubt about the intensity of their desire as they finally reach the bedroom door, both breathless and shivering."Please open that damn door," Jeongguk urges with a growl.Jimin, still cradled in the protective embrace of Jeongguk's arms, reaches for the door knob. With a tender push, he swings it open, unveiling a breathtaking sight that momentarily captivates them both. The room is bathed in the soft, ambient glow of the evening sun, its warm rays filtering through the two open windows. But this isn't what lets them stop in their movements. It's the massive heap in the centre of the room; Jimin's hoard that reflects the golden hues, multiplying them by thousands.Jimin slaps his hands on his face. He forgot to stow away his treasures in the chests after waking up this morning, and it's embarrassing. It's his secret way of sleeping, reminiscent of the dragons of old. Nowadays, hardly anyone sleeps like this anymore. When dragons transitioned from caves to cabins, they started to prefer tanned skins and furs over cold metals or spiky gems as beds. Yet, Jimin saw it in his grandparents' cabin when he was still a fledgling, and after spending his first night in such a pile of treasures, he vowed to do the same once he grew up."Is this...yours?" Jeongguk, who is currently not blinded by the intoxicating sensation of Jimin's kisses, gapes when he sees a giant heap of gold, jewels, and other gleaming riches in the middle of the bedroom. Carefully, he lowers Jimin to the floor, his eyes never straying from the opulent display."Well, dragons just love shiny stuff, and I'm no exception," Jimin replies. "And as you can see, I also like sleeping on it. It feels safe to lie on my hoard. I understand why dragons did that in the past."Jeongguk's gaze shifts from the glittering pile to Jimin. "Darlin, this is…wow. I have no words. It's just…wow. Come here." He takes Jimin's wrist, guiding it to his lips. It's like the touch of a butterfly. Jimin feels every brush of them as they trace upward to his neck, making him succumb to the pleasure that has tingled in his belly since the first time they got this close. With a soft moan, he closes his eyes to savour the overwhelming feeling on his skin. Goosebumps spread over his arms, shoulders, and back, sending sparks down to his lower parts. The anxiousness that clung to him merely seconds before vanishes like mist under the sun's warmth. It's forgotten. Completely forgotten. Jeongguk is a master at kissing, and at that moment, nothing else matters. Only the present. Only Jeongguk."Never thought I'd witness you, beautifully bare, against a backdrop of gleaming gold. The thought alone makes me feel…things," Jeongguk admits."Things?" Jimin asks breathlessly. He can't really concentrate, but counts one and one together when Jeongguk takes his hand, guides it down to his crotch, and presses it against his hard cock."Things," Jeongguk states, letting out a deep rumble. "Where do you want us to continue this, my treasure?""Here. Right in the middle. Want to lie in my hoard. Want to add you as another treasure to it."Jeongguk raises his eyebrows. "Are you sure you're ready for this, little dragon?"Jimin pushes Jeongguk down onto the pile of gold, following right after, taking a seat on his lap and hovering over him. "More than ready. Take me." He leans in, capturing Jeongguk's lips in a deep kiss, pressing their naked bodies together."Ahh!" Jimin squeaks when Jeongguk suddenly grabs his ass cheeks. Moaning, he bites his lips, wiggling his ass back into Jeongguk's hands, who slaps it once."Want you on your back," Jeongguk commands, swiftly manoeuvring them until Jimin is pressed into the gold by Jeongguk's weight. "Now, it's perfect. Pretty thing on a pretty pile."The cool touch of gold feels like needles on Jimin's heated skin, but he loves it. He throws his head back when Jeongguk explores his body with urgency, desperate to touch every visible piece."I never imagined my hoard would be put to such good use," Jimin mumbles."Can't complain either. I have all the world's treasures in my bare hands," Jeongguk responds with a throaty chuckle, followed by another tight squeeze of Jimin's ass.Placing one elbow next to Jimin's head, he leans down to kiss Jimin's chest. "You taste just as good as you look," he says, licking over Jimin's nipple."Aaahh…yes. I like that.""Good. Tell me what you like so I can give you more of it."Jimin moans when he feels Jeongguk's hot fingers running up between his thighs. The tips are pressing into his skin, travelling closer and closer to his precious parts, making him take in a sharp breath. "Jeongguk!"Leaning over him, Jeongguk chuckles into Jimin's ear, "You are so precious," his palm rubbing over Jimin's hardened cock as he speaks. The pressure makes Jimin's blood boil. He sobs loudly, much to Jeongguk's evident delight."Do you like it? Don't worry, this is only the beginning, my pretty little dragon. Consider it a warm-up." Jeongguk's voice is sultry, like thick honey running down his throat. "Spread your legs a little more," he instructs, gently pushing against Jimin's thighs to coax them open even wider. Finally, a wet finger dips inside. The feeling pushes the air out of Jimin's lungs in a sharp gasp. Jeongguk responds with a hum, kissing the tender skin of Jimin's thighs, his finger pushing in and out steadily. Jimin's body moves instinctively in harmony with the little thrusts."Such a pretty dragon. So beautiful and so good for me."And Jimin readily surrenders, losing himself in the intoxicating feeling, eagerly responding to Jeongguk's actions. Quickly, his breath becomes shallower, chest rising and falling rapidly."Once I'm done here…" Jeongguk curls his fingers, making Jimin throw his head back against the gold underneath. Pleased with the reaction, he bites softly into the skin as his fingers speed up. "I'll take you to my house, and keep you in my bed for the next month."Jimin clenches around him at his words, licking his lip in pleasure. With each thrust, he inches closer to the edge, and he really can't help the roll of his hips when he feels him rubbing over his prostate a little bit faster. Every so often, Jeongguk presses down on it, sending sparkles into Jimin's crotch. But the moment he loses his mind is when Jeongguk grabs his twitching cock with the other hand."Jeongguk!" He is writhing in pleasure."Yes, darling? Do you want me to make you cum like this?" Jeongguk asks, pressing a kiss against the sensitive head while circling his finger around the base, tightening the grip."No," Jimin mutters."No?" Jeongguk makes a statement by swallowing the cock into his mouth, bathing in Jimin's loud moan that follows. He asks again, "Are you sure that you don't want that?""No," Jimin mumbles, shaking his head. "No. I want you to fuck me."Jeongguk grins, licking up and down. "One doesn't rule out the other.""Maybe, but right now I just want to feel you inside me."Jeongguk's teasing expression hardens into a more earnest gaze as he takes in Jimin's request, his eyes blazing red. With a lingering kiss against Jimin's thigh, Jeongguk withdraws his finger, leaving Jimin yearning for more."Your wish is my command."Momentarily, he leaves Jimin's body. In panic, Jimin opens his eyes to see what's happening, but when he looks at Jeongguk, he closes them once again, moaning loudly.Jeongguk got into position while pumping his own cock, preparing to enter him right away. Making himself comfortable between Jimin's spread legs, Jeongguk leans over him. "Are you ready to welcome me in?" he inquires, sealing the question with a kiss pressed to Jimin's lips.As if on command, Jimin responds with half a cry, "Yes!""Good little dragon," Jeongguk smirks, his gaze fixed on Jimin as he gets into position.Bracing himself for what's inevitable, Jimin nods, signalling his readiness for one last time before Jeongguk, with a gentle push, enters him. Jimin whimpers softly when Jeongguk turns his head for another kiss, his teeth grabbing a hold of his thick bottom lip to tuck on it."Let me show my pretty little darling everything that I promised earlier."The sensation is overwhelming, waves of pleasure coursing through Jimin's core once Jeongguk begins to move. In the beginning, the movements are slow and unhurried, each thrust careful not to hurt Jimin. Yet soon, the snaps of his hips become deeper and slightly faster. The initial caution transformed into urgency. The golden coins beneath them rustle with every movement. The metallic jingle of the treasures interweaves with the passionate sounds of their shared pleasure. Each thrust sends a cascade of soft chimes through the room. All the while Jeongguk whispers praises and encouragement into the space next to Jimin's left ear. "You feel amazing."Jimin, lost in the whirlwind of sensation, responds with breathless affirmations, urging Jeongguk to push harder by grabbing his hips and pulling him against him."Do you like that?" Jeongguk asks after an exceptionally hard thrust.Nodding in agreement, Jimin leans against Jeongguk's shoulder. He even bites into it to stifle some of the sounds that escape him, but Jeongguk doesn't seem to mind. On the contrary, Jeongguk grabs Jimin's right leg and hooks it over his shoulder, delving deeper. The following moan from Jimin is so loud that it rings in both their ears. He feels every inch in the deepest parts of him, and he wants exactly that: Every inch. In the deepest parts. Inside of him."Let me take you from behind. Want to see this too," Jeongguk says, stopping and pulling out."Don't stop!"Jimin's whine makes Jeongguk chuckle."Don't worry, it will be worth it."Driven by an insatiable desire, Jeongguk adjusts their position. With a skilled movement, he turns Jimin around, supporting the small of his back as he places him on all fours. The golden coins beneath them softly rustle in protest as Jeongguk pushes back in, all while caressing Jimin's ass cheeks softly. It surely has Jimin gasping and gripping tightly at whatever thing he can find. In one hand is a golden necklace, the other squeezes some diamonds as Jeongguk slams into him."I…ah! Jeongguk!""See, I told you it'll be good," Jeongguk says. He leans over Jimin's back, his breath hot against Jimin's ear as he praises the sight before him. "Your ass looks so delicious. I want to taste it later."Jimin pushes his face into the pile. Jeongguk continues to thrust hard but slow. The room is filled with the sounds of their pleasure—the moans, the rustling coins, the slap of skin against skin. Jimin's senses are overwhelmed as the tension within him reaches its peak."Oh, Jeongguk," he gasps. "Feels so good. So full…"The pace quickens even more. Each thrust sends waves of ecstasy through Jimin, the pleasure almost too much to bear. His walls are pulsating and sucking around Jeongguk's dick while his voice is hoarse from calling out the man's name too often and too loudly. He is a mess. His legs are shaking and his climax is approaching rapidly. And Jeongguk isn't far away either. His movements become more deliberate, his tip always slamming against Jimin's prostate when he pushes in, each thrust pushing them closer to the edge. In his final moments, Jimin's body tenses before it shakes violently. With a series of loud cries, he succumbs to his blissful release, his cum shooting right onto his pile."Fuck!" Jimin curses. He quickly rolls his hips, riding out his orgasm while Jeongguk is still pushing into him, chasing his own climax."Yes," Jeongguk growls. He grabs Jimin's hips even tighter, and once he gets proper hold of him he pulls him against his pelvis, barely giving him time to calm down or even breathe. "I-I'm coming, too."When the pleasure is almost too much to bear for Jimin, Jeongguk comes with a loud groan, his cock pumping his seed in hot spurts."Oh my." Jimin collapses onto the pile of gold while Jeongguk is still cumming deep inside of him. They are both panting and groaning for a while, but when they have calmed down enough, Jimin feels a kiss on his neck, soft lips pressed against his burning skin. It's simple, yet it makes him feel all warm and fuzzy inside, even though his body is too exhausted to respond in any way. Only a soft whine leaves him when Jeongguk pulls out. Hot cum spilling out and flowing down his balls and cock. He doesn't know how to clean this mess on his horde, but this is a problem for later. Now, he doesn't bother. He feels content. Happy. Entirely in peace with everything. This was the best thing he has ever experienced, and he won't give a damn about anything else."Let's lay you down on your side, baby." Jeongguk slings his arm around Jimin and lowers him onto the pile. Once he is sure that Jimin is comfortable on his side, he positions himself beside him, grabbing his hand to hold and squeeze it. A comfortable silence settles between them.Eventually, Jimin speaks, his voice full of awe. "This was…""Beyond words.""Incredible. Let's do this again. Until the end of time."Jeongguk chuckles. "Sounds perfect, my dear."Excitedly, Jimin turns to face Jeongguk, their eyes locking. "Jeongguk, I've never felt this way before, and I never thought I'd find someone who could make me feel this alive," he says, his fingers tracing light patterns on Jeongguk's chest. "I didn't expect this when I came here, but I'm glad it happened."Jeongguk nuzzles closer to Jimin, his grip tightening around his waist. "Me too. Me too. You're a treasure, Jimin, and I'm grateful to have found you." ●▬▬▬▬๑۩۩๑▬▬▬▬▬● "I can't believe it. You really fucked.""Taehyung!"Taehyung, who has just waltzed into Jimin's hut, stands in the middle of the living room, wearing a grin that could light up a small village. Outside, Denmore goes about its daily rhythm. Taehyung looks as self-satisfied as a fledgling who just knocked a mug off the table and is now pretending it's an accident, all while Jimin waves two crystal chalices around."Could you not announce my love life like you're narrating a drama? And how do you even know?" Jimin stomps to his friend, pointing one of the two chalices in Taehyung's face, expecting an answer."Oh, it totally does. You and I know that this is a mating proposal. The end of the whole courtship that usually lasts for months. And here you are, waving them around after what? A week? Those two beauties would still be sleeping peacefully in their chest if you hadn't... indulged in some passionate activities which must have been mind-blowing.""Have I ever told you that you are embarrassing?"Taehyung crosses his arms, unfazed by Jimin's accusation. "Well, you can't blame me. It's not every day my little fire dragon prince decides to spice up his life with a little romance. I'm just here to revel in the glory of your newfound love life." He winks, thoroughly enjoying Jimin's discomfort. "But seriously, congratulations. It's about time you let a little romance into that fiery heart of yours."Jimin rolls his eyes at Taehyung's theatricality. "You make it sound like I want to propose today. I was just looking for these damn chalices, and maybe show them to Jeongguk."Taehyung, mischievous grin intact, teases, "Oh, come on, Jimin. Crystal chalices? You might as well have written 'Will you be my forever mate?' on a scroll and handed it to him."Jimin huffs. "It's not like that. They're just family heirlooms. Passed down from generation to generation."Taehyung raises an eyebrow. "Family heirlooms that conveniently signal the end of a courtship? Very subtle, my friend. We both know what they mean. They are not just simple chalices. We use them to drink at the official courting ceremony. It's usually on the day after we gift them."Jimin narrows his eyes. "Jeongguk doesn't know this tradition. You're making way too much out of this."Taehyung chuckles. "Well, he's a lucky guy then, stumbling into a mating without even realising it. But let's get back to the important matter at hand—when and where are you planning to bestow these important artefacts upon him?"Jimin sighs, glancing around the cosy hut, contemplating the upcoming revelation. The air is infused with the faint scent of burning wood, calming him down. "I was thinking of doing it in the evening, by the bonfire. The next one is in a couple of days, and it seems like the perfect setting. The warmth, the flickering flames, the sense of community, it all adds to the… atmosphere. And, well, we did start talking during the first bonfire. It just seems fitting, you know?"Taehyung grins, clearly approving of the idea. "Ah, the classic bonfire romance. A wise choice. The villagers love a good love story unfolding in the glow of the flames. It'll be like a scene straight out of one of the wyrm's tales.""It's not about the theatrics, Taehyung. It just feels right."Taehyung nods knowingly. "Fair enough. So, the bonfire it is. Have you thought about how you'll present the chalices?"Jimin leans back on the sofa, considering the details. "I thought I'd wait for a lull in the festivities, then approach him, chalices in hand. Keep it simple, not too dramatic. I don't want it to seem forced." His gaze wanders to the crackling fireplace, the flames casting a warm, flickering glow that dances across the rough-hewn walls of the hut.Taehyung crosses his arms thoughtfully. "And what about your words? You know, the part where you actually ask him to be your forever mate?""Words? Since when does Taehyung think one should need words? I thought everything is conveyed through one's eyes.""This only applies to me, Jimin. You don't have my eyes." Taehyung blinks with them. "You need words.""You know, Taehyung, for someone who claims to be the master of romance, you sure have an interesting way of advising on love matters."Taehyung grins, unabashed. "Hey, romance comes in many forms! I just bring a little extra flair to the table. So what do you want to say?""I thought I'd keep it simple, straight from the heart. No grand gestures or flowery speeches. Just sincere words between, expressing how much he means to me, and asking if he wants to be more than just a part of my courtship.""So finally you admit that you fucked and want to ask him if he would mate you right here and right now?"Jimin bursts into laughter. "You silly lizard.""Oh, come on. Tell me," Taehyung begs. "I want details. I'm frustrated. Namjoon is still busy painting portraits of me so that he can give them to me one day, while I want nothing more than for him to stick his brush into me and paint my insides."Jimin raises an eyebrow, a smirk playing on his lips. "Maybe you should tell him with your eyes. You know, convey your desires with a well-timed gaze.""Oh, I've tried. I even told him with my mouth, but he choked on his stupid porridge, and I had to bring him to Seokjin."Jimin bursts into another round of laughter. "And here I thought my love life was complicated. Yours sounds like a comedy of errors."Taehyung joins in the laughter. "You have no idea. Now, back to you. Was he big?""Taehyung!"Taehyung raises an eyebrow, the mischievous glint in his eyes undeterred. "What? I'm just curious about the details. Size matters sometimes, you know."Jimin rolls his eyes. "We're not discussing that. Let's talk about something else.""Okay, okay. How about living arrangements? Do you have any plans for the future with Jeongguk? And where to settle down? Have you thought about it? East or North?"Jimin sighs, thoughtful. "It's a significant decision. We haven't delved into the specifics yet, but I'm leaning towards the North. Jeongguk loves the idea of exploring the wilderness, and I can envision us building a cosy home amidst the dark forest—and he's eager to show me the Northern lights.""And in winter? You wouldn't survive a blizzard."Jimin chuckles. "Jeongguk will keep me warm with his love."Taehyung grins. "I don't think that's how it works. Better to make sure you stock up on enough firewood."Jimin nods. "Noted. But what about you? Any plans for the future with Namjoon?"Taehyung sighs dreamily. "Oh, you know Namjoon and his love for art and knowledge. I imagine us in a quaint cottage surrounded by books and paintings. Maybe we'll stay in the East where the valleys inspire creativity. But, of course, he has to move into my den.""But if you stay in the East, I won't get the chance to see you anymore. Maybe Jeongguk should come to me after all.""Or you could switch things up—summer in the North and winter in the East. A change of scenery with each season."Jimin raises an eyebrow. "Interesting idea.""It is indeed." Taehyung grins. "Variety is the spice of life, my friend. Plus, you get the best of both worlds—and me. The vibrant summers exploring the North and the serene winters in your cosy cave in the East. Life's an adventure, Jimin. Might as well make it as diverse as possible." ●▬▬▬▬๑۩۩๑▬▬▬▬▬● As the sun dips below the horizon, Jimin and Taehyung make their way to the communal bonfire area. The air is crisp, carrying the scent of burning wood from the hearths scattered throughout Denmore. Torches light the cobblestone paths leading to the heart of the village. The bonfire, a towering centrepiece surrounded by quaint cottages, comes into view. It is surrounded by a circle of smooth stones, and its flames are reaching towards the darkening sky. From all directions, villagers gather, their faces lit by the dancing flames. The faint murmur of excited conversations blends with the crackling of the burning wood. In the background, a skilled musician plucks the strings of a lute, his deep voice reverberating in everyone's chest as he sings in long-forgotten tongues. As the two best friends approach, the others exchange warm smiles and greetings. Jimin, carrying the two crystal chalices carefully wrapped in embroidered cloth and stowed away in a bag, feels their weight on his shoulder.Taehyung nudges Jimin playfully. "Ready for your big moment?"Jimin shoots him a half-amused, half-anxious look. "As ready as I'll ever be, I suppose." Just as he utters those words, he spots Jeongguk next to Yoongi and Namjoon. He hesitates, but Taehyung playfully shoves him forward."No backing away now. You've got this."Jimin takes a steadying breath and steps into the luminous circle surrounding the bonfire. He can't help but feel the eyes of everyone upon him. Navigating through the villagers, he first makes his way toward Namjoon, Yoongi, and Jeongguk, who stand amidst the crowd. Their smiles mirror the warmth of the bonfire when they notice Taehyung and him."Taehyung! Jimin!" Namjoon is the first to greet them, his face lighting up with genuine joy. Yoongi nods in acknowledgement, and Jeongguk's eyes sparkle with anticipation."Hi, Jimin," Jeongguk says with a bright smile."Hi, Jeongguk," Jimin replies.Taehyung grins when he notices Jimin's frozen state after exchanging friendly hugs and greetings.Namjoon, ever observant, nudges Jimin playfully. "Why do you look like you've seen a ghost, Jimin?"Jimin blinks, realising he's been caught in a momentary daze. "Oh, it's nothing. Just a bit of pre-bonfire jitters, I suppose."Taehyung chuckles. "More like pre-surprise jitters. Jimin's got something up his sleeve for tonight."Namjoon's eyes light up with curiosity. "A surprise? That sounds intriguing. Care to share a hint?"Jimin glances at Jeongguk. "Let's just say it's something special for the occasion. You'll find out soon enough."Yoongi smirks. "Keeping us in suspense, I see.""I love surprises. Can't wait to see what you've got planned," Jeongguk says.As the banter continues, the group finds a comfortable spot. Seated on a weathered log beside the crackling bonfire, they clink their jugs together in a toast."The excitement in the air tonight is almost palpable, isn't it?" Taehyung chirps, looking pointedly in Jimin's direction. "So, how are we feeling tonight, gentlemen? Excited for the festivities?"Namjoon chuckles. "Absolutely. These bonfire nights have a unique charm, and with all of us here, I'm sure it's going to be even more memorable. But speaking of excitement: Jimin, Taehyung mentioned something about a 'big moment.' Care to share the details?"Jimin maintains a mysterious silence, but Taehyung, fueled by the first jug of cherry wine that Namjoon handed him, is even more eager to talk. "Jimin's turning the bonfire into a spectacle. You won't want to miss it," he says.Jeongguk leans in with enthusiasm. "A spectacle? That sounds amazing.""Taehyung," Jimin whines, ignoring Jeongguk's big, sparkly eyes on purpose. His eyes are focused on his best friend, pleading for him to stop.Taehyung looks at Jimin, gazing silently at his best friend until he nods. He finally realises that Jimin isn't very keen on doing this in front of them. Suddenly and without a word, he jumps up, grabs Namjoon and Yoongi's arms, and starts to pull them away.Jimin's eyebrows shoot up in surprise as Taehyung takes charge. He rolls his eyes but can't help but appreciate Taehyung's understanding. However, Jeongguk is the one who asks, "Hey, where are you taking them?"Taehyung smirks mischievously. "Just for a little stroll away from the bonfire, my friend. Let's give you some space for your grand reveal."Jeongguk, puzzled, queries, "Which grand reveal?" but his question is drowned out by Jimin's loud sigh. "Hey, are you okay? Why did he leave?"Jimin shakes his head, a small smile playing on his lips. "It's nothing, Jeongguk. Taehyung just thought I might prefer a bit of privacy for what I have planned. Don't worry about it. Now, where were we?"Jeongguk opens his mouth, clearly unsure how to respond to the unexpected twist.Jimin chuckles at Jeongguk's slightly befuddled expression. "You look a bit taken aback."Jeongguk blinks. "Taken aback? Me? Never. I'm always perfectly composed and unflustered.""Oh, really? Because right now, you're giving off the 'startled fawn in the moonlit forest' vibe."Jeongguk grins, leaning back against the log they share. "Alright, maybe just a little bit. But can you blame me? It was a bit peculiar, all this talk about surprises."Jimin chuckles, the warmth of the bonfire flickering in his eyes. "Fair point. But trust me, it's a good surprise. Now, let's enjoy the evening, and I promise all will be revealed in due time.""Okay."Jimin and Jeongguk find themselves caught up in the lively vibe of the bonfire celebration. The music picks up its pace, the flames dance higher, and dragons from the Southern tribe join the festivities with carefree dances, blending their laughter with the lute's melody. The energy of the gathering is contagious, and Jimin can't help but get swept up in it."I love the fire breathers from the South," Jimin says, genuinely impressed.Jeongguk laughs and shifts his gaze from the spectacle to Jimin. "Ever been to the south?""Unfortunately not," Jimin replies, a tinge of disappointment in his voice. His world has mostly been confined to the East and the Middle in Denmore.Jeongguk suggests, "Maybe it's time for a new adventure. What do you say we plan a trip to the South sometime? Explore new lands, meet the other tribes, and witness more breathtaking fire performances."Jimin's eyes light up at the idea. "That sounds amazing, Gguk. I've always wanted to see things beyond my cave. The world is full of wonders waiting to be uncovered. And who knows, maybe we'll find some hidden surprises along the way."Jeongguk grins, his playful side showing. "Hidden surprises, huh? Just like the one you've been teasing everyone about tonight?"Jimin chuckles. "Can't wait anymore, huh?""No. I can't. You have something in that bag, and excuse me, but I am a weak dragon. I can already smell that there's a treasure inside," Jeongguk says, his eyes gleaming like molten gold."I understand. But let me first say something: We don't have to do everything today or tomorrow. It's just… it's just that I am sure that I want to spend my future with you," Jimin confesses, certainty on his lips and in his eyes. Both look at each other, their smiles so full of love that even the bonfire looks dull next to them. As the warmth of their shared moment lingers, Jimin and Jeongguk decide to step away from the bustling crowd for a bit. They find a quieter spot near the edge of the bonfire's glow, where the crackling flames provide a soothing backdrop to their conversation.Jeongguk leans against a nearby tree, his gaze fixed on Jimin. "So, spill the beans, Jimin. What's in that mysterious bag of yours?""A dragon has to have some secrets, don't you think? But fine, I suppose you've earned the right to know." Jimin reaches into the bag, his fingers dancing over the fabric before carefully unveiling his two exquisitely crafted crystal chalices. "These two chalices are my last courting gift. I know, I skipped all the others in between, but it's the most meaningful and I am ready to give them to you."Jeongguk looks taken aback. He touches his chest. "Chalices? You want to give them to me?"Jimin nods. "Yes."Jeongguk's excitement bursts forth unexpectedly. "That's awesome!" His enthusiastic reaction includes a slight jump, a burst of unbridled energy. "I know this tradition! We have this too!""Oh, you have?" Jimin is genuinely surprised, finding a delightful common thread in their traditions. "Finally!""Yes! Of course, I know this!""So you accept it?""Definitely!""I'm… you don't know how relieved I am," Jimin whispers, softly smiling to the ground. All of his dreams came true in a second. He was honest when he said that he was relieved. "It's just that... these chalices, this tradition, it means a lot to me. It's not just about the celebration or the surprise, it's about our connection, the acknowledgement and meaningfulness of our bond. And, to be honest, I was a bit anxious that it might not align with your traditions or that you wouldn't feel the same way.""Why shouldn't I feel the same way? And besides, I love this tradition. It's the best!""Do you think that?" Jimin could cry with joy."How can I not? It's definitely the best. I mean, it's the naughtiest, how can I not love it?" Jeongguk replies, wiggling his eyebrows suggestively. The smile slips from Jimin's face in under a second, getting instantly replaced by a confused frown. Coldness settles in his chest, paired with a strange itch in his gut. "Naughty?"Nothing is naughty about the courting gift that always comes with a mating proposal. Of course, newly mated couples indulge in naughty things afterwards, but this is not the important part. It's the ceremony, the vows, and everything that comes with it.Jimin can't fathom what Jeongguk could mean, but before he can question further, Jeongguk takes both chalices in his hands with a grin so bright it borders on madness. He raises them to the sky, looks at Jimin for a moment, and blows him a kiss."I love you so much, Jimin! May our sex be fruitful and our future hatchlings healthy!" Jeongguk almost screams the words, his happiness visibly overflowing before he does the most unexpected thing Jimin has ever seen—and he has seen Jeongguk refusing his first gift or getting roasted by Taehyung. However, this act beats all of it. The scene is something he will probably never forget for all eternity.Right next to Jimin, who is frozen to the ground in shock, stands an ecstatic Jeongguk smashing both crystal chalices to the ground with full force, breaking them into millions of glittering pieces. Every single piece looks like a well-carved diamond, reflecting the flickering light of the bonfire. The shock leaves Jimin in shambles, staring at the shattered fragments of what were once meaningful symbols. He doesn't know if he should laugh or cry—or both.Jeongguk, still wearing a radiant smile, seems oblivious to the shock on Jimin's face. He bends down, picking up a piece of the broken chalice with a youngling-like enthusiasm. "All the deities will bless us with so many healthy hatchlings now."Jimin blinks, torn between trying to understand Jeongguk's perspective and the lingering sense of loss for his most precious treasures. His thoughts stumble over a sea of unsaid words, voice trembling as he begins to speak, "But they were… They meant…" The unfinished sentences hang heavy in the air, much like the weight of the shattered chalices around him. "The tradition, the chalices. The gift is about commitment, not..."Jeongguk interrupts, picking up another shard and holding it up to the bonfire light. "It's about breaking free, embracing our future filled with passion and love! It's about us, Jimin! Our intimate bond that results in new life, breaking all the boundaries! How beautiful is that! I never thought about becoming a father but now that I met you and now that you gave me this gift, showing me that you want to build a family with me, I really can't wait to be a dad. If it's with you, I want it. I want everything."Overwhelmed by a surge of conflicting emotions, Jimin surrenders to tears that cascade down his cheeks. That's it. He sinks to the ground, knees nearly digging into the fragments of the chalices. A subtle thud punctuates the moment.Concern etches across Jeongguk's face as he rushes to Jimin's side. "Hey, baby, what's wrong? What happened? Why are you crying?"It's unfair in Jimin's eyes. He wants to be angry that his family heirloom got destroyed, but the reason for Jeongguk's actions sounds so beautiful that he can't be anything but deeply touched. He rubs his eyes furiously and lets out a shaky breath.Bumping his fist into Jeongguk's thigh, he confesses, "Because I want to be mad at you for destroying my most precious treasure. It itches in my fingers to strangle you! You see? My hands are shaking. However, how can I be mad at you when you just said something so beautiful and so meaningful? Why do you have to be so unsuitable and yet so suitable?""I did what?" Jeongguk asks, voice weak. His arms hang beside his hips and his shoulders are hunched, making him look miserable.Jimin manages a half-laugh amidst his tears. "You just destroyed the most important courting gift we have. Something I protected my entire life. I wanted to gift them to you. They should have become a part of your hoard. But now… You've successfully smashed not just the chalices but also my pride and my sanity.""I… Jimin… I did–" Jeongguk starts but gets pushed away by Taehyung, who just returned with the others."Jimin! What happened? What's going on?" Taehyung is on the brink of losing his cool when his eyes focus on the broken crystal chalices. "What the–""Congratulations!" Another voice booms from behind. Yoongi jumps Jeongguk's back in sheer happiness, embracing him tightly. A rather rare sight for the otherwise so-calm dragon. "I am so proud of you two! My golden fledgling is finally an adult.""Are you two mental? How can you be so happy?" Taehyung shouts at Yoongi and Jeongguk. Namjoon already senses that something got lost in misunderstandings again and tries to pull Taehyung away, but the furious man hasn't finished yet. "Are you blind? Jimin's chalices are broken! Have some sympathy!"Of course they are. That's literally their main purpose," Yoongi replies, very calm once again. His face shows no remorse and not a single sign of understanding for Taehyung's anger."Their what? Purpose? You want to say that they are supposed to be broken?" Taehyung asks again, looking more than taken aback. "What the fuck are you talking about?""That's exactly what they are made for. The fertility chalices are supposed to be destroyed once–""The what?" Jimin, Taehyung and Namjoon ask simultaneously in different degrees of confusion and different levels of volume. Now, it's Jeongguk who answers, his voice not as confident as Yoongi's, "The fertility chalices. You know? They resemble a womb that receives the seed. If they get shattered on the ground, it means that you will be blessed with more eggs than a womb could ever bear.""Indeed," Yoongi reassures with a nod and crossed arms."Isn't it the same in your tribe?" Jeongguk asks while looking at all three Eastern dragons, biting his lips in worry."No, it's not," Namjoon replies, his eyes apologetic. "Chalices are family heirlooms; our most valuable treasures that are kept in our hoard until we find our mate. We gift them as a part of the mating proposal. Usually, the mating ceremony will be held one day after the chalices change hands, transferring the hoard from one family to the other. Like a kind of dowry.""I-I… Wait. They are what?" The look on Jeongguk's face slowly resembles sheer panic. "Jimin… Is it true?"Jimin, whose tears are still flowing down in thick trails, bites his lips and nods.Caught in astonishment, Jeongguk gapes momentarily, standing still. Then, as if a switch flips, he slumps down, kneeling on the ground next to Jimin. The warm glow of the bonfire plays on his determined face as he feverishly reaches for the scattered pieces, a desperate attempt to salvage their shattered world."Oh, no, no, no, no, no… NO!" Jeongguk shouts, frantically putting the broken pieces together, but it's impossible for them to be sticking together. He cuts his fingers while collecting them in his hands. Tiny rivers of blood roll down his palm. "Please, no!""Jeongguk…" Jimin says softly, his hand directly on top of Jeongguk's, stopping him from rummaging through the mess. "Jeongguk… Jeongguk, look at me. Stop!""No, I can't! They mean so much to you! How could I be this stupid? They are part of your hoard and I destroyed them! I must find the pieces!""Jeongguk, please. Stop it. It's okay.""No, it's not! Not at all?""It is. Please, stop," Jimin says, pulling at Jeongguk's hands. He removes the broken bits of crystal glass with pinched fingers and once he's finished, he rips off two long strips of his tunic and wraps them around Jeongguk's hands. He lifts both to his face and presses kisses on them. "It's okay, but can you please answer me something?""Yes, speak!" Taehyung throws in, his voice not as soft as Jimin's."He hasn't asked anything yet. How's Gguk supposed to answer?" Yoongi hisses through gritted teeth"Shush. All of you. Let me finish my question. Okay?" Jimin asserts, his tone cutting through the rising commotion like a blade."But Jimin–" Taehyung starts, but his words are halted by Jimin's intense gaze. It's a silent warning. Enough for him to understand that his best friend can handle the situation himself."Can you please let us be alone?" Jimin asks all of them, but it is said like a demand, not a question. "I believe this is one of those situations where we should talk first and act later, instead of mindlessly hurling accusations at each other. I think we did that enough for a lifetime in the past few days.""I didn't–" Yoongi begins, but Namjoon swiftly places a hand on his shoulders and firmly guides him and Taehyung away from the scene."I think we should give them some space, don't you agree?" Namjoon suggests, his voice offering no room for dissent, and Taehyung and Yoongi relent, reluctantly acknowledging the wisdom in leaving Jimin and Jeongguk alone.Once the others have departed, Jimin draws a deep breath, still cradling Jeongguk's hands in his own. With a gentle tug, he rises to his feet, bringing Jeongguk up alongside him. "Were you serious earlier?" he asks, his gaze searching Jeongguk's eyes for sincerity."With the fertility chalices? Yes, of course," Jeongguk affirms."No, I believe you on that point, but I was talking about the other thing…" Jimin hesitates, a hint of shyness colouring his words. Jeongguk's questioning expression urges him to unveil his thoughts. "Were you serious when you said you wanted to start a family with me? The things with the eggs?""Oh…" Realisation dawns on Jeongguk, and a warm smile curves his lips. "Yes, of course! I mean, I know it's early to discuss it, considering we've only known each other for a few days, and we aren't an established couple yet, and so on and so forth. But the mere thought of building a future and a family with you makes me feel warm inside. It just feels right."Jimin takes a moment to absorb Jeongguk's genuine sincerity before responding, "It feels right for me too, Gguk. There's something about the way we connect, the way our paths crossed, that makes me believe in the possibility of something beautiful—even if we had a messy start. But maybe that makes it so special."Jeongguk chuckles softly, nodding in agreement. "Our beginning may have been a bit chaotic, but it brought us here. I believe the messy parts, the unexpected twists, are what make our story uniquely ours."Jeongguk draws back, a slight wince crossing his face. "Please don't remind me of that.""No, it doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is us. I don't need chalices on a wall rack to find happiness with you. I've learned my lesson, to let go of my entitlement to things like courting traditions," Jimin reassures.A moment of silence hangs between them, the warmth of the fire flickering in the background. The rhythmic beats of the drums echo in the night, and laughter mingles with the crackling of the bonfire. Couples twirl and spin in the firelight, lost in the enchantment of the moment. The air is filled with the sweet aroma of burning wood and the lively energy of celebration. Completely in line with the boisterous mood, Jimin also allows himself to unwind without thinking too much. Confident and with a big grin on his face, he steps on his toes again to press a warm kiss on Jeongguk's lips."I can't believe I like you that much," Jimin says. He wants to deepen the kiss, he doesn't even care who's watching. But abruptly, like a fleeting dream, Jeongguk takes a step back."Jeongguk? Is everything alright?" Jimin asks, his gaze following Jeongguk's retreat from the warmth of the bonfire. "Hey!""Yes, yes. Everything's alright, but I want to get something. Wait for me. I'll be back in a moment." Jeongguk excuses himself, and without providing any clarification, he hurries away, leaving Jimin puzzled and alone.Jimin's concern deepens, wondering what might have triggered such a sudden departure. He considers following, but he doesn't even know where to go. In the end, he decides to trust Jeongguk.A tense half-hour passes and Jimin slumps down on a log, busy playing with his fingers and digging his heels into the dirt. He observes the revelry around him—people dancing with abandon, others engaged in animated conversations, and elders imparting wisdom to the eager fledglings. The firelight flickers, casting shadows on the faces of those lost in celebration, yet Jimin's eyes keep searching for the silhouette of Jeongguk returning from the mysterious errand.Just when the night threatens to swallow Jimin's hopes, Jeongguk emerges from the darkness, a pair of chalices clutched in his hands."Jeongguk! What…" Jimin says once he sees him and jumps up, walking a few steps towards him.Jeongguk's smile couldn't be described as anything else as huge. His eyes are shining as bright as the stars above them when he stops in front of Jimin."There's something I had in my chest which would look great on a wall rack," Jeongguk says. "I always have them in one of my chests since I more or less forgot I even have them, but now that you reminded me of them, I want to give them to you.""Jeongguk, that's…" Jimin stammers, at a loss for words, the unexpected gesture leaving him pleasantly surprised and deeply touched."That's the least I can do. I know their meaning in our tribe is different from yours, but I don't mind adapting to yours. So, Jimin, with every beat of my heart, would you graciously consider accepting me as your mate in the future?" Jeongguk asks."Yes, Jeongguk. With all the love and warmth in my heart, I would be not just honoured but overjoyed to walk this path with you. And thank you for giving me these beautiful chalices."Without another word, Jeongguk pulls Jimin into his arms, and the world seems to fade away as their lips meet in a deep, passionate kiss.As they break apart, a breathless Jimin looks into Jeongguk's eyes. "I never imagined a chance encounter could lead to something so beautiful," he whispers, slightly panting and fingers gently tracing the contours of Jeongguk's face."Me neither. But what happens now?" Jeongguk asks."I don't know, but how about this?" Jimin says and suddenly throws both chalices to the ground with a loud clatter."What…" Jeongguk is momentarily taken aback, his gaze shifting between the broken glass and Jimin's eyes.Jimin bursts into laughter and playfully presses his face into Jeongguk's neck. "I must confess, I quite fancy your tradition a little more.""My tradition?" Jeongguk questions, still trying to comprehend Jimin's spontaneous act."The fertility blessing. Breaking all the boundaries and embracing our future filled with passion and love," Jimin explains, his words a tickling whisper against Jeongguk's ear.And then, it clicks. Suddenly, Jeongguk's face lights up again, filled with infectious enthusiasm. "Ah, you mean that.""Yes. That." Jimin lifts his head, locking eyes with Jeongguk. "Take me away, Jeongguk, and show me that your tradition is not just hot air and empty words.""There's nothing I'd rather do," Jeongguk replies with unwavering conviction. As if sealing their shared destiny, he takes Jimin's hand, fingers entwining seamlessly, and together, they step into the night. Leaving behind the revelry and the whispers of the crowd, they navigate through the starlit landscape, ready to move into their future together. At that moment, the broken chalices and everything else fade into the background, the rest of the world rendered unimportant when they both have only eyes and ears for each other. Only their blooming love the focal point amidst the festivities. For now and forever. ●▬▬▬▬๑The end.๑▬▬▬▬▬●⠀
