Work Text

When Clymene and the Heliades finally found Phaethon's body, smoldering endlessly at the bottom of a lake, grief overtook them.Clymene was spared the brunt of the hurt, having already excepted days prior that her son was gone, but the Heliades were inconsolable."He didn't deserve it!" one of them cried. "He was such a good kid!""Let's go, children" Clymene tried to pull her daughters away from the lake, but they wouldn't budge."No" another said. "We can't just leave him""Honey, he's not coming back" Clymene tried to reason, but none of them were having it, too caught up in their grief to do anything. She looked up at the sky with a heavy mind. "I'm sorry, gods" she muttered. "I'm sorry for what he did and I'm sorry I couldn't save him from himself"In a rare moment of kindness, Zeus looked down and took pity on the daughters and turned them into trees, leaving Clymene alone and with a heavy heart as she slowly made her way back home.
