Living Beyond Survival

Work Text

*Three weeks without the Dursleys. Without any adult supervision. And he didn’t get expelled. Harry was ecstatic. He had never had this kinda freedom not even at Hogwarts. He stayed at the Leaky Cauldron. He first finished all over his schoolwork at Florean Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlor. Which was nice to be able to do at a real table during the day and not under his covers at night. Unlike what Hermione may think, Harry did in joy reading and school, but it was kinda hard to focus on stuff like that when you almost get killed ever year. Reading was the escape from the Dursleys that Harry needed to survive. He would curl up in his cupboard and read whatever he could find, or whatever he could actually read because of how dark it always was. (That’s probably why he needed glasses at so young.) It made him slightly sad that he hasn’t really read as much as he used to as of late.~By the second day at the Leaky Cauldron Harry was ready to get out and explore Diagon Alley. Harry has been to Diagon Alley multiple times, but it was always for a specific purpose like school shopping with the Weasley or withdrawing money from his vault. He had never had the freedom or time to leisurely look through the place. He spent a lot of time inside Flourish and Blotts looking for something to read. He was determined to get back into reading. Harry found many interesting books such as Defense Spells 101 (which he probably needed considering his track record of DADA teachers), Quidditch History, and he also ended up looking through the young adult romance section. The book We can Try from the romance section really caught his eye. Two young wizards brought together because of their mutual pain learn to grow even with a dark cure upon them. Though he would never admit it, Harry really enjoyed romantic novels. It may be because Aunt Petunia anyway had books like that lying around or because he was just a hopeless romantic. He quickly shoved all his books in a bag and went to check out.~One week into Harry’s stay and Diagon Alley was practically bubbling over the edge with activity (a lot like most, if not all, of Harry’s potions). Being there was only a few weeks till school started the alley was full of kids and parents shopping. Harry saw many of the upcoming muggle-born first years with wonder gleaming in their eyes. He saw many wizarding parents herding their kids like sheep throughout the street. There were also a few very obvious muggle parents with there kids. These parents stuck out like a sore thumb with their jeans and very casual attire. Though Harry did dress the same, but obviously no one was gonna mistake him for a muggle. He also noticed many of these parents using their phones with wizards looking at them as if they were the crazy ones. Harry did have a phone himself. It was one of Dudley’s old phones. He just didn’t use it much because why would he while surrounded by literal magic.Harry spend the rest of the morning walking in and out stores, but never really finding anything that he wanted to buy. He visited Quality Quidditch Supplies a few times just to look at the new Firebolt. It really was pretty. He really wanted it and he could afford it, but ever time he thought about getting it all he could picture was Ron looking at him jealously or Hermione silently judging his choices. As much as it pained him, he chose not it buy it.When lunch rolled around Harry stopped at a small cafe and then headed over to Florean Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlour. Best he’s eaten since the end of the last school year. While heading out of Florean Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlour Harry heard a very familiar, very annoying voice.“Potter, you look terrible! You dress like a literal five year old in a potato sack,” Malfoy said smirking. Harry turned to see Malfoy standing against the wall of the next shop.“Nice seeing you too, Malfoy,” Harry said. Malfoy was looking like he always did. The Slytherin Prince. His blond, almost white, hair had grown slightly. And unlike when they were first years it’s not fully slicked back like someone had just licked his head. His sharp features prominent as usual, though he had grown into them more. He was taller than Harry now and it slightly put Harry off.“Where’s your little friends, Weasley and Granger? They would follow your idiot ass of a cliff,” Malfoy scoffed.“I’m here by myself,” Harry said and it seemed to genuinely catch Malfoy off guard. But Harry couldn’t relish in that for to long.“Are you insane. Like I knew you were a little out there, but Merlin. With Black out,” Harry was confused. What did that random criminal have to do with anything? This confusion mush have show in his face because then Malfoy started up again, “Oh great. You’re not bravely idiotic. You’re just idiotic. Black wants you dead, Potter. He’s coming after you,”“Oh. That sucks. But like I’m surrounded by people so I don’t think I’m in that much danger,” Harry said shrugging. “And if I need to I can use magic. I think they’ve just kinda given up on me. Not that I’m gonna push it or anything but like if I have to,”Malfoy looked at him like he had just told him the earth was flat. He looked at him one of those stupidly long math problems with letters and symbols that you have to stare at for like 10 minutes just to understand. (Not that Harry thinks Malfoy can even do maths, much less any algebra).“I really have to spoon feed this to you don’t I?” he said running his hand over his face, “Ok, you can use magic here. This is because there’s so much magic usage around that they wouldn’t be able to pin point any specific person. This applies to any wizarding filled place,” Malfoy explained like he was talking to a toddler.“Oh,”“Draco!” the voice of an annoyed Lucius Malfoy called out from inside the store next the them.“See you at school, Potter. If you can survive by yourself by then,” Malfoy spat before turning on his heel and heading into the store.Harry thought that conversation went very well all considering. Though it was a bit concerning to have a murderer after you and no one, but Draco Malfoy thought it was a good idea that you should know. In all honesty Harry wasn’t as worried as he probably should be. He’s had a teacher with Voldemort on his head trying to kill him, a basilisk trying to kill him and his friends, and a possessed diary trying to kill all non-purebloods. Compared to all that, Black felt like a piece of cake. Especially now that he knows he can use magic here.As Harry kept walking through the street he thought about what Malfoy first said. And maybe he was right. Maybe Harry did need new clothes.~Shopping for clothes is hard. Harry had spend the last hour or so trying to find clothes that he liked. He never has really thought about appearance much. Not that he has ever really gotten the opportunity to. The Dursleys never shopped for him it was all hand me downs that were 5 sizes too big for Harry. It didn’t really help his overall appearance. There’s not much that Harry does like about his appearance. He’s pretty short compared to other guys his age, he constantly feels like his limbs just don’t work right, his dark skin has always made him stick out whether that’s in the Dursleys suburban, white neighborhood or with the pale Weasleys’, his dull green eyes making him stand out more under his flimsy glasses, and his messy hair had loose curls flying everywhere. Though it does hide the scar that branches out on his forehead like actual lightning l trying to nip at his eyebrows.Harry did eventually get used to the whole shopping thing. He found that it wasn’t that bad, especially when he got to try things on. He saw that he didn’t look like a literal toddler anymore. It was cool.~Harry was heading out of the last clothing store of the day when he heard it. An odd groan. It was quiet, but Harry still heard it. It was coming from the small in clove in between two stores. Though the sun was still out the small nook was covered in shade. Harry cautiously walked towards the sound. There was a person there. And Harry only knew one person with bright, blonde hair. “Malfoy?”He lay there curled up on himself. He was obviously in pain, but from what Harry could see there wasn’t any signs of harm on him. But his face said it all. His sharp features scrunched in pain. So different from his sneering face just hours ago.Harry crouched down to reach for Malfoy. He grabbed onto Harry startling him. Harry was now sitting on the ground practically holding Malfoy. Malfoy was letting out sharp breaths, while he gripped onto Harry’s new jacket. He was hyperventilating, sucking in air like it was gonna leave him. His eyes were shut tight. Harry wasn’t even sure if Malfoy knew who he was grabbing or if he even knew that someone else was even there. Harry sat there and awkwardly held Malfoy.~Malfoy was sleeping in Harry’s bed. This is not how Harry saw his day going. Harry kinda freaked out after Malfoy passed out on top on him. So he picked Malfoy up and carried him to his room at the Leaky Cauldron under his invisibility cloak. And now Harry was pacing his room.Malfoy was in his room. Draco Malfoy was in his room. Did this count as kidnapping? He was just trying to help. Were the Malfoy’s gonna take legal actions against him for taking their son? He had just gotten out of trouble with the ministry he did not need them at him again. Harry was officially panicking. His mind spinning every possible story of how badly this could go. A groan took Harry out of his own spiraling head.“Are you ok?” Harry said rushing to the side of his bed.“Potter?” Malfoy’s voice held no venom behind it , “Where am I?” He said slowly propping himself up on his elbows.“Ok so, you were hurt and I found you then you passed out and I may have panicked, so you’re in my room. And. Yeah. That’s about it,” Harry felt really awkward.“Oh. Well thanks,” Malfoy’s eyes wouldn’t mean Harry’s.The silence of the room was thick. There were so many questions hanging off the two boys heads, but both were too nervous to rock the boat.“So what happened? Why were you hurt?” Harry said breaking their awkward silence.“None of your business,” he spat out almost like he was curling in on himself.“Well I kinda hauled your ass here and helped so I wanna know what happened,” Harry stated.“Why did you even help me?”“I wasn’t just gonna leave you there to rot in the ally way. And don’t try to talk around my question, Malfoy” Harry said.“Ok ok. Fine,” Malfoy took a few moments before talking again, “Unlike what you may think, me and my father don’t really have the best relationship. That’s all I’m gonna say, Potter, so don’t push,”“Oh. I’m sorry,”“I don’t need your pity. I’m fine,” he said defensively. The silence consumed them again. Malfoy was still laying of his bed now with his back leaning on the headboard. For the first time Harry saw he as a human. Malfoy had always just been a rude, annoying prick, and no them else. But here he was hurt, he was uncomfortable,  and his hair it was messy. It didn’t look as chaotic as Harry’s, but it was so odd to see him without his hair perfectly done. Even during quidditch games his hair just magical seemed to stay in place. Without all the styling it looked so soft like silk.“Are you gonna tell your parents?” Harry asked slightly tugging on his hair. “Wow, you ask a lot of questions,” he said while running his fingers through his hair, “No. I’m not gonna tell my parents. One of them already dislikes you. And as much as I also dislike you, I don’t want to hear about it from him,”“Why do you dislike me?” Harry asks. Well they were here and this was the most civil conversation they had ever had, so might as well push a little. “Like I know I didn’t take your hand in first year and stuff. And I know I don’t like you because you’re a complete git, but why don’t you like me?”“You know we aren’t friends now? Just because you helped me out doesn’t mean we can now talk about our feelings and go skipping off in the sunset,” he said while getting off the bed.“Well we don’t have to be friends, but you know this stupid rivalry is stupid-““Beautiful vocabulary”“-and we aren’t toddlers. We could be civil with each other even though you make me want to rip my hair out,” Harry said choosing to ignore that little side comment.Harry walked up to Malfoy and he extended his hand out. “Truce?”Malfoy stared at him for a moment. “Why?”“Because we aren’t eleven anymore, and also because, as you know, I have a lot of enemies already so might as well get rid of one. Now are you gonna shake my hand or not?” Harry’s hand was still outstretched to Malfoy.Malfoy shook his hand.*

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

*

Life is going as it usually did for Harry. Absolutely horribly. Dementors are terrorizing specifically him, his death is being tossed around by Professor Trelawney, Hermione and Ron keep arguing about that stupid rat and cat, and Malfoy’s acting weird(er) towards Harry. Life’s amazing. Well, Hagrid was now teaching Care of Magical Creatures and that can’t be too bad, right?

~

Ron and Hermione weren't speaking to each other. Harry walked beside them in silence as they went down the sloping lawns to Hagrid's hut on the edge of the Forbidden Forest. It was only then when he spotted the stupid green. Well the Slytherins and their abundance of green were obviously joining them in this class. Many of them were whispering and taking glances at Harry. Oddly enough, Malfoy seemed to be quiet in the group of Slytherins.

Hagrid began the lesson explaining how the open the book for the class. Which had many side comments from the Slytherins. Hagrid was obviously getting nervous about his first lesson after the Slytherins’ annoyance over the books. Though Harry couldn’t fully blame the Slytherins it would be nice if your book for school wasn’t trying to eat your hand. But unlike the Slytherins Harry wasn’t gonna say that to his face.

Hagrid strode away from them into the forest. And a few moments later trotting toward them were a dozen of the most bizarre creatures Harry had ever seen. They had the bodies, hind legs, and tails of horses, but the front legs, wings, and heads of what seemed to be giant eagles, with cruel, steel-colored beaks and large, brilliantly, orange eyes. The talons on their front legs were half a foot long and deadly looking. Each of the beasts had a thick leather collar around its neck, which was attached to a long chain, and the ends of all of these were held in the vast hands of Hagrid, who came jogging into the paddock behind the creatures.

“Hippogriffs!" Hagrid roared happily, waving a hand at them. "Now, first thing you gotta know abou’ hippogriffs is, they're proud," said Hagrid. "Easily offended, hippogriffs are. Don't never insult one, cause it might be the last thing you do,"

Hagrid explain how to approach the hippogriff. But no one seemed exactly exited to go first. The creatures were beautiful, but very obviously deadly.

“I’ll do it,” Harry said. At least Hagrid was excited at this.

He slowly walked towards the hippogriff, which he learned was named Buckbeak. He untied one of the chains, pulled the gray hippogriff away from the others, and slipped off its leather collar. The class on the other side of the paddock seemed to be holding its breath. Malfoy's eyes followed his ever step.

He gave a short bow to Buckbeak. Earning one back from the creature.
~
Flying on Buckbeak was exhilarating. It was so different then riding a broom. With a broom you had full control, but Buckbeak was a living being, so Harry’s control was limited. And it felt great. Having no control and just feeling free. Though Harry still like flying by broom better.

When Harry landed Hagrid spread out the rest of the hippogriffs to groups of students. After Harry everyone else seemed to warm up to the animals more.

Harry noticed the Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle now had Buckbeak. Not that Buckbeak was Harry’s or anything, but Harry could just feel that one of those idiots were gonna screw something up, so he continued to watch them.

Malfoy was odd. This year he hadn’t made any comments towards Harry about the dementer incident, even though that’s all that anyone seemed to mention when Harry was around. Though Malfoy had still made his normal snickers and side comments about his hair or grades, it didn’t feel the same. There wasn’t any real malice behind his words. Though Harry didn’t think anyone, but him noticed. He had been thinking about Malfoy ever since they saw ever other over the summer. He hadn’t mentioned it to anyone. Not even Ron and Hermione. It just seemed to personal, like a little secret between just them (and Malfoy would probably kill him if it got out). Harry guessed their truce was actually working.

A piercing scream shook Harry out of his thoughts.

Hagrid was wrestling Buckbeak back into his collar as he strained to get at Malfoy, who lay curled in the grass, blood blossoming over his robes. Great. He’s hurt again. Harry debated about just staying out of it and just letting someone else deal with it, but he just couldn’t.
"Someone help me—  gotta get him outta here— " Hagrid said still trying to keep Buckbeak from jumping Malfoy.
Harry went over to Malfoy and slung his arm around the taller boys waist to prob him up to stand. He then saw it. There was a long, deep gash on Malfoy’s arm gushing with blood. He ignored it focusing on gettingMalfoy to the infirmary.

“You need help, mate?” Ron said jogging up to Harry.

“No it’s good I think I got it,” Harry said practically carrying Malfoy at that point.

“Someone might wanna help Hermione though,” Harry said. Ron gave him one last questioning look before he ran back to the class.

At that point Harry just carried Malfoy. And Malfoy somehow didn’t have any protest. But that also may be because he wasn’t all there right now. The taller boy wasn’t that heavy and he had already carried him farther before in Diagon alley. Hopefully this didn’t become a habit.

He looked back to the rest of the class. Hagrid was still fighting Buckbeak, while the rest of the class were being gathered up by Hermione and Ron. Mostly Hermione though.
~
Harry sat in the infirmary with Malfoy. He sat just next to his bed watching him. (Is that creepy?) Madam Pomfrey had fixed him up easily. And now he was sleeping. This felt like déjà vu.

Harry knew he didn’t have to stay here with Malfoy and eventually his friends would come looking for him, but— Harry didn’t really have an excuse, besides he just felt like it.

Malfoy had passed out before they had even made it to the infirmary. He didn’t seem to have a high pain tolerance. The wound was closed now and looked like nothing had even happened.

“Shit,” Malfoy whispered not even opening his eyes. “This is just great,”

Well, he was very clearly awake. That’s a good sign. Maybe. Harry already missed passed out Malfoy, though. Passed out Malfoy couldn’t talk(he really did have a foul mouth), he couldn’t glare, and he really did look peaceful. It was almost nice to look at him. Though Harry would never admit that.

“Are you in pain? I can go get Madam Pomfrey,” Harry said getting up.

“No,” he grabbed Harry’s arm, “Don’t,” He sounded almost panicked. “I feel fine. It’s fine,”

“You sure?”

“Arg. Why does it always have to be him? Why? Does the universe just hate me?” Malfoy said dramatically. His eyes were open now, but never met Harry’s. Harry felt like maybe he was interrupting something. He was still holding onto his sleeve, though, and Harry didn’t really know what to do.

“Ok. So if you’re not hurt or in any pain, what’s wrong?” he asked slowly.

“You’re nosy aren’t you?” Malfoy was look you at the ceiling. “We aren’t friends, you know. Just because we called off the full on fighting doesn’t mean we talk to each other,”

“We could,” Harry said quietly.

“And why would you want that?” Malfoy finally turned and looked at him.

“Um… well,” In full honesty Harry didn’t really know why. There were many good reason why not to, but he really couldn’t think of a reason why. Maybe it was because of the mystery behind Malfoy or maybe it was because he was a teenager who wanted to break some kinda rule, but Harry just knew he wanted to know more.

“See, you don’t even know why. This is just a waste of time. All I’ve done is feed into your stupid savior complex—“

“I don’t have one, but—“

“—again. And your big head really doesn’t need that. And here I am practically talking to a wall at this point because this dumbass can’t answer a stupid question. That he brought up in the first place. And honestly, this is not what I should be thinking about right now. I should be worry out of my mind, but no I’m here entertaining Potter,”

“You done?,” Harry said sarcastically.

“No. I am not. This is so stupid. Hell, he’s gonna be up here soon. And what am I gonna say to him? Merlin, I’m dead,”

“What are you even talking about?”

“Used your brain for once in your life, Potter,” he said rolling his eyes. A moment of silence washed over the room “My father,” he said harshly.

“Oh. Well, he can’t hurt you here though. Dumbledore’s here,”

“Very funny. What’s that old hag gonna do against my father? And why would he even help me? He obviously doesn’t like anyone else besides you stupid Gryffindors, and he definitely doesn’t like me. And father will be furious. With me tainting the Malfoy name and shit,” he spit out.
Harry wanted to protest. To say that Dumbledore really would help him, but Harry didn’t even know if that was true. Harry had thought about Dumbledore before. And he was very conflicted. On one hand he was his hero ever since Harry found out about the wizarding world. But on the other hand he had let a lot of stuff happen at the school that shouldn’t. Like having the philosopher stone at the school and a teacher with Voldemort stuck to his head or a giant Muggle, hating basilisk in the pipes. Maybe Malfoy was right.
Silence covered the room once more. It wasn’t awkward more just neither knew what to say. They were both stuck in their own thoughts.

Harry wanted to help. And since Malfoy wasn’t gonna go to Dumbledore and probably wouldn’t go to the infirmary, if anything happened Harry had to do something himself.

“Ok, so if anything were to happen this afternoon,” Malfoy look back up at him. His eyes questioning.

“Head to an empty classroom on the second floor and I’ll find you. I can help you. No one else has to know and no one else will see you, but me,” Harry said his voice piercing through the silence.

“Just between us?” Malfoy asked.

“Just between us,” Harry replied.
