Alone No Longer

Work Text

Hogwarts is magic sure but it also entailed yet another long day of overwhelming sights, scents, sounds, crowds and too much information to take in at once.Remus needed time alone, space, a quiet spot to: be himself, flap his hands, chew on his sleeves and to hear nothing but his own breathing. A place where there wasn't too many voices over lapping at once, the air mixed with the smell off everyone's perfumes or someone bumping into him every few seconds.Heightened werewolf senses really didn't help with sensory issues. No one would understand.Remus walked to the forbidden forest with his cane, the grass making him a bit wobbly, a lie fresh on his tongue that he was going to study in the library; when truthfully even there would be too loud for him right now. The Gryffindor soon got to the forest and found a large oak tree to sit under, he lay his cane against the tree, flapped his hands for a second and slid down to sit against the large oak in the dense forest.Finally. Quiet."Remus?" A voice spoke. Or not. Remus sighed "Yes?" He then looked up.Regulus stood there, with his green quidditch jumper on and a pair of baggy black joggers. The Slytherins wouldn't be playing for another week? And Remus knew that he must be imaging this because Regulus would never be caught dead in anything but dress trousers (bar his quidditch robes)."Are you okay?"Remus blinked, hard, Regulus wouldn't get it, he'd laugh, everyone laughs or calls him stupid, no one gets that loudness physically hurts or that certain textures make him want to claw off his skin, that emotions just bubble up till he snaps, that no playing the same song again and again doesn't annoy him and that chewing his sleeves isn't something he can 'just stop'.Regulus wouldn't understand, he's the perfect slytherin brother to Sirius, the quiet and collected version. But he was stood here, hair messy, less than perfect (yet comfy looking) clothes, a glint of understanding in his eyes and slowly yet surely making his way over and sitting next to Remus."Sorry that I'm a mess, there's a reason but I don't think you'd get it." Regulus sighed, his head falling back to lean against the tree."Try me" Remus put on a small smile."The castle, its too crowded and loud, plus I just had potions with Slughorn, the smell was horrendous yet no one else seemed to bat an eye." Regulus' eyes grew glassy as he explained. He felt vulnerable. Regulus wasn't sure why he trusted the other boy and he was was taken aback when Remus' eyes widened with what looked like recognition."You...get it?" Remus asked, shocked to hear someone else explain how he felt."Wait- so do you???""I thought maybe it was just my..." he faked a cough "furry little problem...but if others feel this way...I'm not alone?""No, I understand it and I'm not a...you know" the Slytherin cut himself off.Remus hummed "Can we be different together?""Sure, why not." Regulus shrugged. The unlikely pair sat against the oak tree, in comfortable silence, looking up at the sky clouding over for the next hour or so.Maybe being different isn't so bad...at least when you're not alone.
