The Sounds of Silence

Work Text

Shinji sat on the sand, staring out at the blood red ocean. He had saved the world, hr guessed, but at what cost? He couldn't shake the feeling that everything he had done was pointless. Asuka turned over, breaking the silence. "What are you doing, baka?" she asked."Nothing," Shinji replied quietly.Asuka rolled her eyes. "We need to talk," she said.Shinji nodded. They didn't say anything for a long time, each lost in their own thoughts. Finally, Asuka spoke up. "I don't know what to do," she said.Shinji turned to look at her. "What do you mean?""I mean...everything. I don't know what my purpose is anymore. I don't know what I'm supposed to do now that the Angels are gone."Shinji nodded. He knew exactly how she felt. "I feel the same way," he said softly. They sat in silence for a few more minutes, the only sound the gentle hum of the air conditioning. Finally, Asuka spoke again. "I'm sorry," she said.Shinji looked at her, confused. "What are you sorry for?""For everything. For the way I've treated you. For the way I've acted. I...I didn't know how to deal with any of this."Shinji took her hand. "It's okay," he said. "We'll figure it out together."And for the first time in a long time, Shinji and Asuka felt a glimmer of hope for the future. As they sat there, holding hands, they realized that they had never really talked about what they had gone through as pilots. They had shared moments of triumph and despair, but they had never really discussed how those experiences had affected them."Hey, Shinji," Asuka began tentatively. "Do you ever think about the Angels? I mean, do you still see them in your dreams?"Shinji nodded slowly. "Sometimes. And sometimes I feel like they're still out there, waiting for us."Asuka shuddered. "I know what you mean. But they're gone now, right? We don't have to worry about them anymore.""I hope you're right," Shinji said, his voice barely above a whisper. They talked for hours, opening up to each other in a way they never had before. They talked about their fears and hopes, their regrets and their dreams. They didn't solve all of their problems, but they both felt a little lighter, a little more hopeful. As the sun began to rise, they realized that they had been talking all night. They were both exhausted, but they didn't want to let go of each other's hands."Let's get some sleep," Asuka said finally. "We can figure out the rest later."Shinji nodded. They soon fell asleep next to each other. They didn't kiss or even cuddle, but their fingers stayed intertwined as they drifted off to sleep. The next morning, they woke up feeling a little less lost. They didn't have all the answers, but they had each other. And for now, that was enough.
