Before the end of summer

Oakley sunglasses, carefully placed on his head. Check. Hair, artfully combed and sprayed into a windswept style around said sunglasses. Check. Seashell beads around his neck. Check-ity check. A hint of strategically placed coconut oil for those seaside shiny muscles. Check. And most importantly, close-fitted black swim-shorts with a yellow tank top. Irresistible.Kaminari twisted and turned his phone on selfie mode. With his back to the ocean, he held his fingers up in a ‘V’ and smiled at the camera, careful to include the ‘Life Guard’ printed on the front of his shirt.A dark head popped into the shot just before he took the picture, “Say working-through-summer-break!” Sero supplied an exaggerated grimacing face just to show what he thought about the idea.Kaminari pushed him out of view, “Out! I look great right now and you're ruining it! This needs to be memorialized.”He set up the shot again. Then paused, before handing his phone over to Sero. “Actually, you take it! Get my whole life-saving sexy body in it!” he puffed up his chest into a mock hero pose.“I’m just saying. I’m going to be catching waves all day while you sit and watch me do it” he snapped the picture.“Oh, it’s not you I’ll be watching,” Kaminari retrieved his phone, checking to make sure you could see all his sexiness. “I’ll be watching all the pretty girls splashing around in their swimsuits. This is a golden opportunity you’re missing! In this uniform, you’re pretty much guaranteed a girlfriend by the end of summer break.”He noticed then Kirishima trudging up to him hunched over and sheepish-like. And suspiciously uniform-less. “Hey! Dude! Why aren’t you dressed? I need you to set me up for the ladies right away!”Kirishima smiled apologetically. “Yeah, about that,” he trailed off, avoiding eye contact.“Dude!” Kaminari gasped, “Don’t tell me you backed out! We were both going to get dates by the end of the summer!”Kirishima straightened up. “I’m sorry!” he fidgeted a moment before looking at Kaminari directly. “It’s just that…I don’t need one anymore.”Kaminari blinked, not comprehending.“Because,” Kirishima continued, “I already have one.” Smiling a bit to himself he delivers the final blow, “Katsuki and I are going out.”Bakugo! Even he has a date before Kaminari?!Ignoring the odd feeling in his chest, Kaminari gaped, “You actually asked him? I didn’t think that was going to work out.”Kirishima nodded. “It’s really exciting and we were kinda hoping to spend some time together during the break.” He shrugged.Kaminari sighed loudly, “Well, it’s all good and jolly that you’re getting some action, but I just wish you hadn’t left me here alone!”“No, no!” Kirishima hurried to add. “I got someone to replace me!”Kaminari stood at attention, “Who?”“Midoriya agreed to cover me!” Kirishima grinned, “now you still get to spend the summer with a friend!”Kaminari’s stomach sank. Oh no.“Kaminari! You’re here!” Midoriya called from the door of the lifeguard tower. Figures that dedicated overly eager Midoriya would be early.Kaminari waved back at him. He sighed and walked slowly towards the tower. This could ruin the whole summer.Don’t get him wrong, Kaminari likes the guy. Everyone does. That’s the problem. Don’t let that fluffy hair and shy demeanor fool you. Midoriya is a total ladies magnet. The reason why is beyond him. A national secret. But the eyes do not lie and you can often find girls at school hanging around him or hanging off him.Midoriya stepped aside to let him in with that quiet smile of his. His brightly colored superhero watch clashed gaudily with the uniform and he was wearing one of those floppy fisherman’s hat settled over tufts of green hair. Kaminari really didn’t get it.Kaminari shook his head. He wouldn’t let this hold him back. He was determined. “Let’s do this!”Kaminari would not be single by the end of the summer. If there was one thing Kaminari learned quickly about his summer it was that he could not count on Midoriya for backup.“Hello ladies!” he swaggered up to a group of girls laying out their towels on the sand. They looked at him but didn’t otherwise respond. “My friend and I will be surveying this area so if there’s anything you need just give us a shout.”Midoriya perked up. “Absolutely! Our main responsibility may be to supervise the waters, but that’s not all,” he says earnestly, “We’re happy to help any way we can,” his floppy hat bobbed as he nodded.Turning to Midoriya, the girls started to smile and thank him. Maybe this could work? A bit of teamwork.Kaminari continues, “if you have any questions,” Midoriya nods. “If you need directions,” Midoriya nods. Kaminari leans forward intentionally, “If you need help applying that sunscreen there-,” he begins but Midoriya tenses up.“Um! I’m sure that’s not necessary!” He’s waving his hands in large frantic gestures like he can wave Kaminari’s words away entirely. “They-they have each other! They would be fine,” he turns to them suddenly, “You’re fine right? I mean if you really needed-nope! Um no.” He turns to Kaminari, red in the face. “I’m going to survey the area.” To them he barely squeezes in a 'have a nice day' before he’s marching swiftly away.Kaminari smiles awkwardly at their wide eyes. “Ladies.” He bows before slinking away.He doesn’t get it. He really doesn’t understand the pull that guy has. He has no visible game at all.Kaminari will have to work it alone. “Good afternoon, gentlewomen!” Kaminari calls out to a pair of cute girls from his lifeguard chair. “Feel free to take a dip in the ocean. I assure you it’s safe,” he pulls his sunglasses down his nose to give them a well-practised wink. “I’m fully trained in mouth-to-mouth.”They grimace at him and walk right by. That’s half a dozen in just the last hour. It must be an unlucky day. A full moon or something. It just isn’t a day for meeting girls.A bubbly laugh rings out near the docks and Kaminari cranes his neck to find the source. His stomach dropped when he sees several smiling girls surrounding Midoriya. Kaminari can just make out Midoriya’s shy smile and humble shrug. How does he do it!?He leaned over the arm of his chair to get a closer look. If only he could make out what Midoriya was saying.“I heard there was a creepy lifeguard calling out to all the women. Should have known it was you.”Kaminari started, falling forward. He only avoided a headfirst dive into the sand awkwardly clinging to the side and shuffling his way back up into his seat. Jirou looked up at him from below, smiling impishly.Kaminari's mood lightened to see his good friend. “Hey now, not all of us have landed a banging babe for a girlfriend. You can’t blame a guy shooting his shot.”Jirou’s eyes softened and she looked over her shoulder where Momo was busy putting together a fancy picnic that would not look out of place at the queen's table. “Yes. I suppose I am pretty lucky.”Kaminari looked back to where Midoriya was laughing along with his admirers. One of them was grabbing onto his arm. “You’re not the only one. If only I could figure out how he does that.”Jirou followed his gaze. She was quiet for a moment. “You should ask him,” she finally said.Kaminari sat up quickly as he noticed Midoriya leading the girls to the boats.“You know, I think it’s about time to rotate. I should probably go take over. I like to be helpful like that.” Kaminari jumped down from the lifeguard chair and hurried over to the group, ignoring Jirou as she called after him. When he got closer, he recognized the girls as some of his classmates from school. Ururaka talking animatedly an inch from Midoriya’s face.“Hey, girls! Unfortunately, Midoriya here needs to get going but lucky for you,” he digs his thumb into his own chest, “I can take over from here.”Midoriya blinks. “Um,” checking his watch quickly, “well actually—““Interested in some boating, I see!” Kaminari gestures to the stack of kayaks nearby. “I would be happy to assist you!” He started tugging on the topmost boat.“Um, sure,” one of the girls, Tsu he recognizes, says. “Should you really be pulling on the end like that?”The front end of the kayak slides hard into Kaminari’s should and he grunts, almost buckling under the weight.“Here! Let me help you with that,” Midoriya reaches out.“That’s okay! I’ve got it!” Kaminari brushes him off and turns clumsily towards Ururaka, “I’m pretty strong you see—“At that moment the back end of the kayak slid off the rack entirely and Kaminari stumbled back trying to regain his hold. With a yelp he lost his footing on the edge of the dock, and the kayak crashed down. He thrust his arms out in a desperate attempt to grab ahold of the dock but knocked his head into something hard. Darkness enveloped him and suddenly he was gasping on a mouthful of cold salt. He thrashed his arms, vision blurry as he felt the beginnings of panic creep into his burning lungs.Strong arms anchored him suddenly, and he was pulled above the surface. He gagged and sputtered on the salt, blinking at the sunlight as he was dragged onto the sand.Midoriya is leaning over him, he realizes as he starts to gather clarity. What he sees takes his breath away for an entirely different reason.Midoriya’s sea-soaked shirt clings to a strong, well-defined chest. Saltwater ran down his neck and arms, dripping off the curly tips of his hair. He’s looking right at Kaminari, his gaze steady and calm. Then he smiles bright as the sun behind his head.“You’re okay.” The hand on his arm is firm and comforting. “I’m here. I’m going to make sure you’re okay.”An odd fluttering sensation stirs in Kaminari’s abdomen. And suddenly he gets it. At the first aid station, Kaminari holds an ice pack to his head as Midoriya applies a bandage to his nose. His long eyelashes flickered over focused eyes. He’d never noticed how many freckles Midoriya had. The sunshine must be bringing more out.“How do you get people to like you?”Midoriya stilled. “Huh?”Kaminari continued, “Girls are just drawn to you. You make them smile and laugh. How do you get them to like you?”Midoriya seemed to understand his meaning, given the slight pink blooming beneath his freckles. It looked nice.“Um. I don’t really do anything,” Midoriya’s attention returns to the bandage on his face. It’s already been fully applied but Midoriya strokes his thumb along the tape as if he’s putting it on. “I just talk to people. Get to know them. They seem to like that,” he says quietly.Kaminari hums and looks and Midoriya’s red face. “I can do that.”“Er, good.” Midoriya backs away and starts to pack up. “We should get going. The day is over and you need some rest.”Kaminari is quiet for a moment. “Good idea. We have all summer to spend at the beach after all, right.”Midoriya looks up from the med kit and gives Kaminari the sweetest smile. “Of course! We have the whole summer to look forward to!”Indeed. Kaminari has a lot to do.After all, he doesn’t plan to be single by the end of the summer.
