----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Remus and Janus didn’t live good lives.Remus’ mother’s greatest pleasure was telling him and his twin how much she wished they were never born. She left Remus and Roman with very little and gave them only hate. Roman turned to trying to be perfect to please his mother. Remus, he didn’t care. He hated her just as much as she hated him. Remus acted out, on purpose. Not for his sweet mother's attention. Just to make her life as miserable as she makes his. He was sixteen with piercings, tattoos, a nicotine addiction, and a reputation at his school for fighting. It made kids avoid him, he wasn’t a bully but he wasn’t pleasant. He never tried to be. All these facts left him with a total of one friend, Janus.Janus bounced around the foster system after his mother had a psychotic break and lit their house on fire while they were still in it when Janus was a baby. They both survived, his mother was put into a mental hospital, one she has never left, while Janus spent months in the hospital recovering from his burns. The scars he still wears today. His current foster family where ultra-religious and believed his mother burned him as a child because he was the devil incarnated. They kept him in their home, where he had been for two years, to attempt to “cleanse” his soul. They lock him in rooms, and he has been exorcized about four times, when Janus isn't at school he is stuck at church. These two miserable souls found comfort in each other. Remus was an excellent thief and lock pick so he would constantly be breaking Janus out of wherever he was stuck. They would run off whenever they felt like it. Night, Day, school time, sometimes for long hours at a time. They had talked about running away forever traveling the country until they turned eighteen. They talked about it so much they had it planned to every detail. They knew what states they were safest in, they knew their rights, how to get their GEDs, and how they would make money. EverythingToday they sat under a tree at a park, it was midnight, and Remus had broken Janus out of the garage his “family” had stuck him in. They munched on some snacks Remus had stolen from a convenience store.Janus leaned against the tree, his head pounding from the latest exorcism his foster family put him through. Enough yelling, holy water, and smoke would give anyone a headache. He had just finished telling Remus all about it. It had gotten quiet before Janus started to talk again.“I kinda wish we had left when we planned like two months ago,” Janus said offhandly. He read the ingredients on the back of his Pepsi can to cure his minor boredom.Remus lay in the grass before Janus swinging around a sour rope. He shot up when he heard Janus, “It’s not too late, let’s go” he watched Janus’ face change.Janus chuckled, “Come on, be realistic.” he put his soda down and watched Remus.“I am being realistic,” Remus argued, “We have it all planned out, it would be perfect. We would have to deal with this shit anymore. It would just be us.”Janus sighed, “What about your brother?” he knew Remus would never leave him behind.Remus shrugged and took a puff of a vape he had been fidgeting with, “He will survive, he is smart. His life would probably be better without me pissing off the witch every day.”“What about…” Janus said stalling trying to think of any more reasons not to leave,“What about nothing Jay,” Remus countered, “come on.” Remus stood with determination, “We can- we can go back to my house, grab a bunch of shit and put it into backpacks then go. We can be happy.”“Remus.. No,” Janus said, he didn’t have any more reasons why they couldn't but he just knew, they couldn’t. The plan was too good to be true, something would go wrong. It wouldn’t be as sweet as they imagined.“Remus yes,” he argued, he sat down right in front of Janus, their legs were almost touching, “What is our life here? There is nothing for us, nothing good at least. There is only misery and hate. Even if we hate our life on the road, it would still be better than this. Even if we got caught, what could be worse? They can’t do any more to us than they already do. It would be great, we could do it, Janus, we really could.”Janus wanted to disagree, he tried to argue. Yet he had no energy left, no reasons either. Remus was right, in a crazy sense he was right. Life would be better if it was just them, on the road, never having to deal with their stupid families ever again.“Okay fine… but not today. We need to get stuff ready.” Janus said. He watched Remus smile with relief. Those were the words he had been waiting for, for a lifetime.“Deal"

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Remus absolutely hated grocery shopping. It was so boring, so much walking, just all around not pleasant. People gave him weird looks no matter how he dressed or acted in the store. That was probably because he was always walking around with his boyfriend. Homophobia got him strange looks all his life. But no matter how much Remus hated shopping he always went with Janus. Usually, Janus asks him what he wants from the store and he can never remember what he wanted. So he was dragged along constantly. So here he stood in the soup aisle of their local grocery store staring at the way too many types of Campbell soap there was in existence. While he did that Janus took the ones they typically bought and added them to their cart.“Why don’t we try split pea and ham,” Remus offered taking the can off the shelf and showing it to Janus.“No,” Janus said simply. He counted the cans he grabbed before deciding they were done with everything in this aisle.Remus huffed and placed the can back where it goes, “Why not?”“Because that sounds absolutely disgusting,” Janus replied, “And I already got you favorites.” he started walking down the next aisle.Remus hummed, that reason was good enough for him. He followed Janus down the different aisle, “We should get fudge pops.”“That sounds good,” Janus agreed. He looked over the grocery list he had half crumbled in one hand.Remus smiled in triumph, he enjoyed it when his impulsive grocery ideas were accepted. He scanned the groceries as they walked past stopping when Janus stopped. It was in front of the case of water they always bought. Yes, it was cheaper to just bring water with them wherever they go in reusable water bottles. But they concluded a long time ago that if thats their own option they just won’t drink water. So bottles it was, don’t worry they recycled.Janus squatted down to grab the large case of water while Remus rearranged the loose Gatorade flavors a few steps away from him. Janus stood, heaving the large case up with him and placing it into the cart.Janus suddenly felt the world start to spin and immediately realized his mistake. He gripped the cart to steady himself. He felt his legs start to get weak and before he could even call out to his partner Remus was there.Remus has noticed Janus’ mistake before Janus had. He has stopped his neutral chaotic disturbance to watch for his partner's symptoms.Remus put one arm around Janus’ waist to pull him closer and used his other hand to cover Janus’ that rested on the cart, “Don’t worry, I got you. It’s okay.” he watched Janus give an appreciative smile before his eyes fluttered shut and his body slumped.“Okay, okay,” Remus mumbled now using his free hand to cradle Janus’ head. Gently he led Janus to the ground. He learned long ago not to be overconfident in his ability to hold his partner's full body weight, “You’re okay”He got Janus to the ground, sitting against the aisle wall with his legs in front of him. He sat over Janus’ legs, careful not to put any pressure on Janus’ legs. He brought Janus’ head forward to rest against his shoulder.Remus glanced up and down the aisle to make sure no one had called an ambulance in a panic, “Everything is alright, we are all good. We should probably grab some like Gatorade and chips while we are here.” he knew he was mostly talking to himself, even if Janus was conscious enough to hear him, he wasn’t processing anything. It was only a few seconds later that Remus could feel Janus stir. He moved just a little to be able to look at his partner. He was met with Janus blinking at him before he sat up. Remus let him, “Hey,” Remus said with a small smile.“Hi,” Janus said back. He rubbed his face and stretched his hands.Remus stood, staring at Janus, waiting for his cue to help Janus stand slowly. He got that soon with Janus reaching his hand towards him. Remus made sure Janus was steady on his feet before continuing shopping.“Let’s get some Gatorade,” Remus reiterated now that Janus could hear him. He began walking down the aisle like nothing happened. Janus followed close behind him.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Remy and Patton were walking about their favorite farmers market. Well, Remy’s favorite. This one stand had some chocolate-covered coffee beans that Patton legitimately believed they were addicted to.They held it at the same park every other Thursday. Patton hadn’t remembered a time when the two of them didn’t go to this market. The two of them had just arrived for their shopping. Patton was looking to purchase some fresh fruit, which meant having to try to keep Remy away from their coffee bean shop long enough for Patton to purchase from the vendors closest to them.Patton got some berries and peaches and happily put them in his little reusable crochet bag. Remy browsed some jewelry at the stall across that Patton was working with. Patton joined him quickly after.“Now can we go to my vendor?” Remy begged.Patton chuckled but nodded, “Yes yes, go on lead the way.”Remy happily led Patton through the crowd of people and vendors to their favorite vendor. As always the coffee bean person sat in their middle business. Rmey looked through all the different ones, grabbing their normal favorites, milk chocolate, and dark chocolate. They gasped, “Carmel milk chocolate ones, oh god don’t tempt me!” Remys joked to the business owner.Patton was uninterested in the coffee beans so he glanced around at the different people and vendors while Remy made their choice. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see two men looking very out of place. They stood tall, wearing official-looking clothes, obviously looking for someone. It made Patton very wary.He wasn’t a criminal…… in certain people’s opinions. But obviously, these two guys couldn’t be looking for him, Patton had kept his head down. He had been very careful. He glanced over to Remy to see if they had finished their shopping yet and when he looked back at the two guys. One of them, with long flowing dirty blonde hair where staring right at him. The dirty blonde-haired one nudged the other black-haired one to get his attention.Oh, they are looking for him.Great…Patton turned around to face Remy, “Remy we need to go.” he said with a panicked urgency.Reny looked at their friend confused, their hands full of three different bags of coffee beans, “What? Why?”Patton glanced over to the men who were now starting to push their way through the crowd of people. Patton grabbed Remy’s arm, “Now Remy, let's go.”Remy placed the coffee beans back on the table as Patton pulled them towards the car, “Why? What’s going on? What is happening?” they glanced around to see if there had been some commotion they had missed.Patton pulled Remy quickly through the crowd, and both of them heard some people start to yell behind them. Patton looked behind them to see the black-haired one pull out a familiar weapon, “Oh shit- run!”Remy glanced behind them, now very aware of what they were fleeing from. They followed as Patton started to run, pushing past people without a care, “Pat! Who are they!?”Patton didn’t bother to respond as he saw the two men start to chase after them. He ushered Remy to run in front of them, “Get to the car!” He pulled down someone's small product stand to block the men's path. He immediately felt bad but couldn’t stop.Remy picked up the pace while fumbling to pull the car keys out of their pocket, they could see the car in front of them, still a bit of a runaway, “Shit shit shit shit.”There was more yelling behind them before the two of them heard a shot ring out.“They are shooting! Patton why are they shooting at us!?” Remy yelled in confusion, still seeing Patton keeping up a glance next to them.“Car Remy!” Patton changed the focus as the two of them ran into the parking lot.“Okay Okay!” Remy unlocked the car before they got there, jumping into the driver's seat. He watched a bullet hit the backseat door, it started to dissolve the metal. Which made Remy really panic, “Patton what the fuck!”Patton jumped into the passenger seat, “drive!”“I know I know!” Remy careless started the car and reversed out of the parking spot. They hit the gas and pulled out of the parking lot. Heading immediately towards their apartment.Patton looked behind them as they drove off. Seeing the two guys stop in the parking lot. He leaned against the seat in relief, “Oh thank goodness.”“Thank goodness? Thank goodness?! Patton those guys were shooting at us! With a gun that melted the side of my fucking car! What the hell?.” Remy yelled keeping their eyes on the road.“I promise I will explain when we get home. I promise.” Patton said quietly. The rest of the short car trip was held in silence. They walked up the stairs to their apartment as well. It was only when they got into the house that Remy walked into the living room suddenly exasperated while Patton locked the front door.“Okay, what the hell? You better start explaining quick 'cause I didn’t even get my coffee beans.” Remy leaned against the back of the couch.“Okay okay… It's a little complicated,” Patton confessed, walking over to Remy.“Make it simple,” Remy responded, crossing their arms.Patton sighed, “Basically… those guys were looking for me 'cause I have magic?” he stared at Remy not really knowing what reaction to expect.Remy stared at him for a second, “magic?” they had a blank look across their face.Patton hummed an affirmation with a nod.Remy blinked, “magic?...”Patton sighed again, “Yes magic Remy”“Like Hogwarts magic? Like you have a wand,” Remy responded, “like a broomstick magic?”“No? I mean kinda, it's just- you know magic.” Patton said with a shrug,“Okay... show me,” Remy said simply. They weren’t going to blatantly deny it but they were a little suspicious.“Show you? How?” Patton questioned crossing his arms to comfort himself.“Yeah show me,” Remy glanced around the apartment and saw an abandoned cup on the table right next to Patton, “move that cup… with your mind or magic or whatever.”Patton looked between the cup and Remy a few times trying to see if Remy was behind seriously. But when Remy’s facial expression didn’t change he sighed once more. He stared at Remy as the cup close to him moved six inches to the left.Remy flinched and stood up straight. Suddenly very conscious of their own breathing, “Okay- okay magic- got it. Moving cup- Okay this is great. This is just fabulous. Your magic and we are being hunted by some guys with a crazy gun. Great!”Patton put his hands out towards Patton, “Remy relax, it’s okay.”“Uh no it's not okay, you’re magic, we are behind hunted, and I don’t have my coffee beans. Why are we being hunted!? Why are they trying to kill you!?” Remy questioned they fidgetted with their hands.Patton rubbed his face, “Basically the High Court of Magical Order really doesn’t like me 'cause I teach magic to kids who don’t want to know how to do magic.”Remy stared for a second, “So basically you are Albus Dumbledore and pissed off the ministry?”“Sure,” Patton responded, “if that makes the most sense to you then sure.”“Great… That’s great..” Remy said.

Logan and Virgil sat silently in their college dorm. Virgil was sitting on the floor against his bed going over an essay that he had due tomorrow. While Logan layed across his bed with headphones in throwing a ball from hand to hand.Virgil had been continuously glancing from his computer to Logan for the last half an hour. He was studying psychology while he knew Logan was double majoring in English and philosophy. Virgil knew that Logan was an essay-writing genius. If anyone was going to catch his little… short cut... Logan would.“Logan.. Logan!” Virgil said until Logan looked over to him taking off his headphones.“Yes?” Logan responded.“Could you look this essay over for me?” Virgil asked offering his computer over to Logan.“Oh yeah sure,” Logan said up on his bed, placing his ball and phone to the side.Virgil stood and handed the computer over to his friend, then anxiously sat on the edge of Logan’s bed.Logan read the essay for a total of three seconds before he looked up at Virgil with an unreadable expression.“What?” Virgil said anxiously.Logan cleared his throat and recited Virgil’s essay, “When depicting a theoretical psychological theory it is critical to elucidate the possible defects of the theory in division and as a whole.”“Yeah..” Virgil pulled his long sleeve down his arms more.“Eluicate? Do you even know what this means?” Logan questioned handing the computer back to Virgil.“....uh yeah,” Virgil looked between Logan and the computer again.“No, you don’t. You didn’t write that.” Logan said the disappointment evident on his face.“Is it really that obvious or are you just a know it all?” Virgil questioned, they both knew that wasn’t an insult.Logan thought for a second, “It might not be that obvious, but you’re not seriously thinking about submitting that. The plagiarism will come through.”Virgil shrugged, “Well it’s written with my assistance by AI so theoretically it won’t because that's the whole point of the program I used.” he gradually started to mumble as he finished his sentence.“Why didn’t you just write your own essay? Did you not understand?” Logan questioned, not really concerned about Virgil's academic integrity but more if he was struggling in his classes.“No, I understood it… I just had like no motivation to do it.” Virgil answered. He took his computer back to his own side of the room, deciding he would just turn it in any way.“Hmm,” Logan began to think, “Would it help if we started doing our school work together? I could keep you accountable and therefore hopefully motivated?”Virgil stayed quiet for a second, honestly touched by Logan’s offer, “That would be nice actually…”“Then it’s settled,” Logan concluded, “Starting tomorrow we will do our work together.”Virgil sighed, “Thanks, Lo…”“I’m happy to help” Logan responded, laying back on his bed to go back to his audiobook.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Patton stared at the test that had just been passed back by his English professor. He had flipped through it three times to double-check that the percentage was correct.A fifty-four percent. He wanted to cry, he was so embarrassed. He had tried so hard on this test. He had his boyfriend help him study even. He was so confident that he would do well. But he failed it, and now he had to head back to their dorm with his failure. The worst part was Patton knew the first thing Logan was going to ask him about was the test.He didn’t know how to look his boyfriend in the eye and tell him he failed. He was such an idiot. He couldn’t even pass one stupid test he studied for, for days.Patton was so wrapped up in his own stupidity he hadn’t even realized the professor had released the class early. He quickly packed up his things and headed out the door.He walked slowly to his dorm. He was trying to figure out what he was going to say to Logan. What he was going to say. Even how he was going to repay Logan for all the time his boyfriend spent helping him. Maybe a really nice date? A new calculator? A day with the dorm to himself.Patton would have to take some time to think about that for a while. He had to do something. He watched anxiously as he stood in his dorm's elevator watching the number gradually go up. He fiddled with the straps on his backpack, rocking back and forth on the heels. He concluded he wouldn’t bring up the test and he would just pray that Logan wouldn’t bring it up. He kept mentally repeating to himself that,“It is okay”“it'll be okay“everything is okay.”He took a breath and put on a smile before opening the door to his dorm and walking in.Patton didn’t know why but his stomach dropped as he saw Logan sitting at his desk typing away at his computer, but he ignored it, “Hey Lo!”“Good afternoon, you’re early,” Logan noted keeping his eyes on his computer to continue working on his school assignments.Patton placed his things on his own cluttered desk on his side of the room, “Yeah my professor let us out early.” he explained.“Did you get your test result?”Patton froze for just a moment before continuing to unpack his bag, making sure his back was turned to Logan. It was like the moments where you get yourself calm but then someone asks if you’re okay. Patton could feel the tears start to form in the corners of his eyes. He tried to blink them away, “Oh yeah.”“How did you do?” Logan questioned unaware of the influence the questions he asked were having.Patton tried to answer, to just straight up say he failed. It was simple. It was easy. His hands gripped his backpack. He didn’t think he was taking too long to answer but he obviously was as Logan spoke again.“Patton?”Patton could hear Logan turn his chair. He knew Logan was watching him and that just made everything worse. He couldn’t help it, tears started to roll down his face, but he knew he had to say something. He took a breath, “yeah?”Even with Patton’s best effort, Logan could hear the strain in his voice. He stood up and walked over to his boyfriend then placed his hand gently on Patton’s arm, “Are you alright?” he gently pulled Patton to face him.Patton turned willingly, only glancing at the worried look on Logan’s face before he stared at the floor, “I-I…. I failed it”Logan frowned. Not because he was upset with Patton failing, but because he was worried that Patton was so distraught about it, “That’s okay.”“No, it’s not! You- you worked so hard to help me- and I couldn’t even pass one single test.” Patton stammered out, not meeting Logan’s glaze. He struggled to catch his breath through his tears, “... I’m so stupid, not even one test…”“Oh Patton, no,” Logan pulled Patton into a hug which Patton gladly accepted. He hid away in Logan’s chest, “You’re the smartest person I know.”Patton took a moment to choke back some breaths, “How can you even say that?” it was ironic to him to hear Logan say something like that. Logan was a genius, how could Patton even compare?Logan softly played with Patton’s hair in an attempt to comfort him, “Because you are, you truly are. I’m not one to lie.”“You’re a genius! And so is Janus- and your sister-” Patton used his sleeve to sloppily wipe his face, “I can’t be the smartest.”Logan gently pulled Patton away so he could look at him, “We are book smart, you are smart in so many better ways. You know how to help people when they are upset, you always know exactly what to say, you know so much about so many people I’m sure I’ve met but I dont even know. Your emotional intelligence could never even compare to mine or anyone else I’ve met. So what if you didn’t pass one test? You’re the person everyone turns to in their time of need. Thats more valuable than one test.”Patton started to cry harder, now because of how grateful he was for his boyfriend, “You're so perfect.” he immediately went back into Logan’s hug.“And you’re so smart,” Logan replied.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Remy was used to being in relationships, they rarely found themselves single. Not because they were a boy hopper. Just because they only hang out with other LGBTQ people and usually they end up dating one of them. What Remy wasn’t used to being in was a situation.Remy met Emile four months ago, and immediately they were head over heels for him. They met in Remy’s high school GSA club, Emile was a new member while Remy was the secretary of the whole club. This should have been the first red flag to Remy.Immediately Remy started flirting with Emile, which wasn’t weird they flirt with everyone. After a month Remy asked Emile out on a coffee date. They would never forget him telling them no. Emile was questioning his sexuality so he told Remy no. They understood and would have backed off, but Emile asked them to wait for him.And wait Remy did, after another month they asked Emile on another date after keeping their friendship as it was before. Emile once again told Remy he wasn’t ready yet, and to ask again next month. So ask again Remy did, on the exact same date they had the same the month before and then the month before that. Emile again said no. He gave a long-winded explanation of where he was in deciding his sexuality which Remy patiently listened to. Emile wanted to be unofficial with no dates just yet.Remy didn’t really understand that but they were quickly labeled with a “Situationship.” But they didn’t care they were happy. Emile was affectionate like any other boyfriend Remy had, but only in private. And if anyone asked Emile if he and Remy were dating he would say no.But really Remy didn’t care. They didn’t… they truly didn’t.Okay, they cared. But they were happy to wait… really they were okay, it was all good. But after another month they couldn’t wait anymore. So they asked Emile on a date, he was hesitant but agreed if the date was at Emile’s house to just do homework and watch movies. Which Remy agreed with. After an hour of homework and movies, Remy finally decided to ask Emile if they could be official. Even official in private if Emile wasn’t ready to be out yet. But Remy couldn’t handle much more of this situationship. They sat watching Emile curled up on himself on the other side of the couch, watching whatever movie played on the TV intently, “Hey babes,” Remy spoke up after a minute.Emile glanced at Remy for a second before he looked back to the TV, “Yeah what's up?” he asked in his normal happy tone, with a hit of anxiety.“I was just wondering, like if we could be official now. Like I want to call you my boyfriend and do the cringy cutesy stuff,” Remy said nonchalantly.“Oh um…” Emile said pulling at his fingers nervously, “not yet…” he gave Remy a sympathetic smile.Remy sighed and sat up from his relaxed position, “Em… I can’t wait for you… I’ve tried but I can’t”Emile nodded a few times, “I understand… that’s okay… It- it was unfair for me to ask you to wait... I just… I don’t know- ya know? It would be wrong to be your boyfriend when I’m just… I’m not gay.”Remy nodded as well and stood, “Nah it's okay babes. I hope you figure it out. I really do.”“Yeah… I’m sorry Remy.” Emile said watching them walk across the living room towards the door, “friends?”“Absolutely friends Em,” Remy assured, “It was a fun friend date, I’ll see you at school?”“Yeah…”Remy nodded and walked out the door. The only thing they liked about situationships was that it didn’t really feel like a breakup, and they hoped Emile felt that way as well.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

College was Remus’ favorite place in the world. He had all the freedom he wanted, he loved actually studying things he liked, and he loved all the people there.Remus sat on a picnic table that was near his next class. He sat patiently waiting for his friend to join him. He sat fiddling on his phone, checking all his notifications, the professor who taught the last class had the most annoying no-tolerance phone policy. That is why you always check rate my professor before selecting your classes. He glanced up to see his friend Virgil slowly walking towards him. He went back to fiddling with his phone to annoy the awkward still too far to talk but far enough to clearly see each other situation.“Yo Ree I just saw a guy who looks like fucking identical to you,” Virgil said placing his backpack on the seat part of the picnic table. He sat across from Remus except on the actual seat instead of the table itself, unlike his friend.Remus put his phone down, and he fidgetted with a spin ring he wore on his ring finger, “No shit really?” a small sense of anxiety started to fill him.He hadn’t gotten to the stage in his friendship with Virgil where he would tell the traumatic story of his childhood. Virgil had no idea of the existence of Remus’ identical twin brother whom the punk had not seen or talked to in like ten years. Sure Virgil vaguely knew Remus bounced around the foster system since he was nine years old but Remus left out that it was after being separated from the aforesaid twin brother.“Yeah, he was walking out of the theater building when I walked by. He was like you if you were,” Virgil took a second to take in Remus’ expensive piercings, jewelry, and tattoos, “... Christian.”Remus chuckled, ignoring the growing anxiety he felt, “weird,” it was impossible. It's almost impossible… okay maybe it had some probability to it. Remus was going to a community college in the same area he had lived in when he was taken by CPS. It could be realistic that his twin stayed in the same kind of area. The subject of the conversation quickly turned into talk about their next class. Remus half focused on the conversation, he more thought about the fact he planned to camp outside the theater building this same time the next day to see if he could see this doubleganger of his. He went about the rest of the day like nothing had happened. Virgil didn’t bring up this person again. The next day instead of heading straight to the table after class Remus went to the main entrance of the theater building. He leaned against a far wall so he had a clear view of the entrance but was out of the way. He stood there, staring at the door, well aware of how suspicious he looked but he didn’t care. Remus had to know if his suspicion was correct. He pushed away the part of his mind where he wanted to be wrong.Remus could feel his heart rate start to pick up as he began to watch different students trickle out of the entrance. He began to fidget with his rings again. He was almost tempted to walk away, maybe it would be better if he didn’t know. He anxiously adjusted the messenger bag on his shoulder.A large group of student exited, there was probably ten of them, boys and girls, all joking around. Thats when Remus saw him. He wore a pair of plain denim jeans and a plain red shirt that was under a short-sleeved button-up that had a pattern of miscellaneous florals on it. He distinctly wore what seemed to be, from what Remus could see from his distance, a gold genuine Rolex.Remus stood up straight his mind now spiraling. Absolutely not that is not him, that can be, it shouldn’t be. Why would destiny be so mean? It's definitely not, obvious it's a consequence. His breathing started to pick up while he tried to rationalize the fact that there was no way in Hades that the person just thirty feet in front of him was his brother.“Roman! Stop it!” Some girl yelled loudly above the group talking and laughing.Remus’ stomach dropped watching the aforesaid Roman gently shove the girl who had yelled. His eyes looked from the girl to Remus for just a second. That was enough for Remus, he immediately turned around and started speed walking to his class. He saw Virgil sitting at the table, tapping his foot anxiously. He seemed to relax once he saw Remus.“Where the hell were you?” Virgil questioned with a hiss, “People were looking at me, I looked stupid sitting here alone.”“I had shit to do Vee, my life doesn’t revolve around easing your anxiety,” Remus joked, doing his best to shake off the news he just learned. Trying to convince himself that it wasn’t his twin, Roman.Remus would like to pretend that he didn’t make a habit over the next week of watching Roman leave that class. He vaguely learned the schedule. Roman’s class only happened every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. He stood outside in his normal place the next Thursday. Roman’s class didn’t get out for about ten minutes so Remus chilled on his phone, scrolling through Instagram.“Hello Remus..,” A voice said suddenly.Remus flinched and looked up in surprise. He stared at the face in front of him. Roman stared back at him with a nervous smile, he had kept a good few feet between them but took a place directly in front of Remus. The punk could once again feel his heart rate start to pick up. He felt his hands start to get clammy underneath his phone. He felt a little lightheaded. This wasn’t how it was supposed to go. Remus never planned for Roman just walking straight up to him. He hadn’t even begun to start about even talking to his brother.Remus put on an act quicker than he even began to process, “Hey” he pretended like this conversation was very normal to him, that he wasn’t a few minutes away from shaking out of his combat boots.“Uh…” Roman said clearing his voice. Remus noticed how he carried nothing, “I saw you, from the window of my class. I just wanted to come over and… I don't know really.” he laughed at the end of his sentence like he was trying to lighten the obvious tension between them.Remus stood up straight, trying to project his fake confidence, “Cool.” he had no other response. What was he supposed to say? Hey, how have you been the last ten years? He watched Roman’s face change to an even more nervous smile, obviously quickly getting disheartened, “Uh… do you know who I am?” the theater student moved his hands behind him, tipping his fingers together to comfort himself.“Maybe Roman… but you know life, is full of coincidence…” Remus said he couldn’t help but be difficult in situations he would rather avoid. He pocketed his phone.“Coincidence?” Roman laughed, “Okay okay um, I’ll prove it to you, when is your birthday?”“June 4th,” the two of them said in unison. Remus gave Roman a look then shrugged. Roman took that as a cue he needed more proof.“Do you recognize this?” Roman questioned, pulling a necklace from underneath his shirt. He set it on top of his shirt, showing off a single dog tag that had belonged to their mother.Remus glanced away, “Yup… okay then. You’ve proved yourself.” Roman smiled in triumph and put the necklace back safely below his shirt.Remus nodded, “...yeah, life seems like it's been kind to you,” he looked Roman up and down. Now the close proximity of Remus could confirm that it was in fact a real Rolex. His shoes looked expensive too.Roman chuckled nervously again, “Uh yeah, I got placed with a really nice family. My mom,” he watched Remus’ face change slightly. He hesitated for a moment before changing his wording, “Amy… she is a pedantic orthopedic surgeon and.. Rick is an engineer. They um are infertile so… ya know foster to adopt kind of thing.” he smiled at Remus hoping he was satisfied with his explanation.Remus nodded again. He wasn’t going to ask if they adopted Roman, mostly cause he didn’t want to know the answer, “I’m glad.”“Really?” Roman questioned without thinking. He watched the surprise wash over Remus’ face.“Yeah.. really,” Remus responded now on the defensive, he was now conscious of the fact that Roman was probably judging him. Of course, he was, they were polar opposites. Roman looked like he spent his free time volunteering at a soup kitchen with his Christian youth group. Remus looked like he spent his time getting drunk in sketchy areas with his friends.“I don’t mean to be like- I just, life doesn’t look like it has been kind to you. So.. ya know.” Roman said, his tone getting quieter as he spoke.Remus' neck twitched in annoyance. He easily picked up what Roman was implying. Roman thought he was jealous, and maybe he was a bit, but that wasn’t what mattered. He was really happy for his brother, “Yeah Roman, every time I was shipped to another house, every ridiculous thing that happened to me. I hoped you had it so much better, I dreamt you didn’t go through anything I did.”Roman now felt bad, realizing what he said was inapposite, “right… sorry. That- that was ignorant.”“Whatever,” Remus said, “I have to go... I got a class starting soon” he used as an excuse to get out of the situation.Roman panicked a bit, looking back to his class, “Oh Um I forgot my phone in my class but I can go grab it and we can exchange numbers?” He took a step towards his class, looking at Remus for an answer before he walked away.“Sure…” Remus said.“Cool! Great just one second” Roman quickly walked away, slipping back into his class which wasn’t hard, they were loudly playing improved games on the stage. He took his whole backpack and rummaged through it for his phone as he walked back outside. When he got through the entrance with his phone in hand.Remus was gone.

Roman was a hero!A very heroic hero who did heroic things.Occasionally….He gets busy, you know, with work… and friends... And life… And occasionally his heroic things fall on the back burner. Other people could handle it. He had a whole group of friends he worked with who did most of the heavy lifting. It had been two weeks since Roman had been to their base, hideout, hub thing (they can never agree as a group what this place was)So after work, Roman went over to the building. It was the top floor of an office building. Other than the group, it was occupied by some mice, stray cats, and birds. Roman slowly climbed the many flights of stairs, now remembering one of the reasons he hated coming to this place. When he got to the top he could see it was empty except for one other person. The top floor was completely open except for some support beams for the ceiling. They had made it homely and they each had their own little section for their gear.Roman could distinctly see his co-worker or friend or acquaintance, (Roman hadn’t decided) meddling around in his section. He stopped his way over to see Patton with a rag, wiping down his weapons. He held Roman’s favorite handgun, cleaning it with a said rag.“Patton!” Roman watched his friend, co-worker, and acquaintance, jump, “What are you doing?”“Oh hey Roman,” Patton said with a smile, “I’m just cleaning up a little,” he answered honestly. Glancing down at the work he had done before looking back to Roman.“Give me that, before anything happens,” Roman said, snatching the gun out of Patton’s hand, “before you like, shoot yourself with it I dont know. Don’t touch my weapons.” he quickly placed the weapon back in the correct spot.Patton took a step back, “I’m sorry, your stuff was just getting a bit dusty so I was just making sure it got cleaned.”Roman made an offended princey noise, “my stuff is not dusty.” he declared looking down at his things, seeing the very obvious dust that had formed over them in his absence.“Mmm Roman they are pretty dusty,” Patton responded, he offered Roman the rag, “You can clean them though, if you don’t want me touching your things that is, cause I’m happy to continue.”Roman stared at Patton for a moment, his smile and outstretched hand with the item he was offering Roman made it hard to continue to argue. Roman took the rag, “I’ll clean them.”Patton gave a content hum, “Thats what I thought.” he walked back over to his own section.Roman often liked to pretend he ran this group, many of the other group members also had their times in that opinion as well. But they all knew that Patton was the one who really ran everything.

If anyone was to ask Logan what his boyfriend did for work he would tell them he was a small business owner. If anyone were to ask Logan who Deceit was Logan would say he had no idea.If anyone were to ask Logan why he is treated like a VIP at half of the bars in New York he would say charisma.Logan spent the time decompressing from his stressful medical job at a club called Venom. He sat in a booth all to himself with an old fashion he was milking. He enjoyed people-watching more than any of the typical club-going things. He had spent the day in board meeting after board meeting, making it so he didn’t see a single actual patient. Logan was the head of the psychology department at a very popular nearby hospital. He likes to spend his day as the on-call psych in the ER rather than in meetings. So his patience was thin. That was probably the reason a bouncer wearing a completely mat-black suit was standing just a few feet away from his booth. His eye was caught by a particularly annoying guy. He was wearing a bunch of fake jewelry and had spent his whole time harassing a bunch of different women. The thing that pissed Logan off the most was he hadn’t seen the man take a single drink. That meant he was completely sober, and just harassing people for fun.Logan watched the guy follow around a young pair of twenty-something girls. At first just talking to them, but then progressively getting more touchy. Logan finished his drink in one quick drink and stood. The man was pushing the girl, half-heartily pinning her to a nearby empty table and Logan’s patience had worn out.He was already pissed none of the bouncers had done anything about it yet. He walked right over to the idiotic guy and grabbed his wrist as the guy was obviously going to touch the girl in some other way.“Thats enough,” Logan said simply. He pulled the guy off the one girl, and the pair of them quickly walked away after. He watched them go before looking back to the guy, who was now very obviously angry, “Get out.”The guy scoffed, “Go fuck yourself, dude. You can’t tell me to leave” he crossed his arms trying to make himself look more intimating.“I can, and I just did. Be happy I’m not calling the cops on your perverted ass,” Logan replied. He had no respect for arrogant assholes and he wasn’t going to pretend to be nice. The guy took a step closer to Logan, “yeah really? I’m not leaving, what are you going to do about it?” he said with a trying smirk.“I have a few options actually, but you see too stupid to understand any of them you ugly fuck,” Logan stated with monotony.“You absolutely-” The guy said trying to take another step forward before he was stopped by a hand on his chest.“I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” A man in a mat-black blazer with a yellow button-up underneath it said. He shoved the guy back and buttoned one of the buttons of his blazer carefully body-blocking Logan with himself. The guy scoffed, “Who are you?” he spat, obviously ready to fight.“The owner, Janus, a pleasure to meet you,” Janus replied with a fake smile, he glanced to the side and beckoned a bouncer to him with just a twitch of his finger. The guy looked confused between the bouncer and Janus. Janus spoke again once the bouncer came up and stood next to him, “Could you get my friend here a drink?”“Of course,” the bouncer said, their eyes not moving from the guy, who Logan could now see looked nervous.Janus adjusted one of the cuffs of his blazer, “A vodka, over ice, shaken.” the bouncer didn’t hesitate before nodding grabbing the guy by the arm, and pulling him off to a back door. The two disappeared behind the door with not a single other clubgoer paying them any attention.Janus turned around to face Logan, now with a real smile on his face, “You’re of fly short today aren’t you darling? You were egging him on.”Logan watched the door for a moment before looking to Janus, “I could say the same thing to you, a shaken vodka?”The owner shrugged, “he was going to try something on you if I hadn’t stepped in. Come on,” Janus explained leading Logan away from the clubgoers and to a nearby stairs that had been blocked off and guarded. The two of them entered and went through one of two doors at the top of the stairs into a large open area that was modernly decorated. It had its own mini-bar and large couch. Two bouncers stood on either end of the room and there were two more doors leading off into other rooms from the lounge area.“Long day?” Janus asked taking a seat on the couch.“Lots of meetings,” Logan answered sitting next to his partner, “long day for you?”“Not really, a few meetings myself but I’m not as against them as you are. It’s good for business,” Janus explained, watching Logan fondly.Logan hummed in understanding, “going home soon?” he questioned.“Only if you join me” Janus replied with a smirk.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Emile was very familiar with his younger brother's insomnia. That is why almost every evening becomes movie night. Patton didn’t sleep at night normally, he was anxious and could never fall asleep. He told Emile extensively about it one day. The fear that if he goes to sleep no one will be there when he wakes up. That someone might get into the house and hurt them. That may be a natural disaster would strike.Emile blamed their parents. They were never home and even went out of county for long periods at a time. They would leave Emile and Patton home by themselves. When they were young it was harder, but as Emile got older he learned how to take care of them. Now that he is seventeen it was normal for them. After school and homework were done they would sit down in the living room to watch a TV show or movie so Patton could get some sleep.Patton was only thirteen, and he had a serious issue of falling asleep in class or when he was out with friends. So Emile devised the movie night system.Today they watched The Owl House. They had watched it probably a million times before yet Emile didn’t care. Twenty minutes into the first episode Emile looked over to his brother from his armchair he was slumped over on the couch fast asleep. Emile couldn’t help but smile a bit, he sat there for another two episodes before his phone started to ring.He quickly picked it up, “Remy baby hi, just one second.” he said in a whisper, watching Patton carefully to see if the noise had woken up. He carefully left the living room and silently walked to his room.Once he was inside with his door closed he started speaking again, “Okay we are all good, Pat was sleeping you know how it is.” he paced his room as he spoke with his partner rolling his eyes fondly, “Um he/they today. Thank you.”Emile was only talking to his partner for about ten minutes before he heard his bedroom door slowly open. He looked over to see his half-conscious brother standing halfway hiding behind the door. He lowered the phone from his face, “Hey Pat, what’s up”
“You weren’t there, you left…” Patton said softly. He now felt a bit stupid.“I gotta go,” Emile whispered quickly before hanging up on his partner, “It’s alright, I’m here now. I’m sorry someone called me and I didn’t want to wake you up.” he gave Patton a soft smile, “Let's go back to the living room,” he walked towards Patton ushering him away from the doorway.“No, it’s okay, you can get back on your phone call I’m all good,” Patton responded.Emile shrugged, “We weren't talking about much anyway, how about dinner? You hungry?” at this moment Emile felt blessed for his partner’s understanding of the situation he was in.Patton eagerly nodded to that so the pair ventured into the kitchen.

“Movie night!” Patton cheered happily, plopping himself down on the couch.Roman laughed and joined him, “What to watch, what to watch? My vote is Hamilton.” he looked at Patton lovingly. Movie nights were his favorite nights.“There is no way Logan is going to agree to that. Plus we watched a musical last time. I vote we watch Good Omens.” Patton responded.Roman gave a dramatic groan purely for the theatrics, “I can’t handle the pain again!”Patton playfully shoved him, “season one silly. Either way, we can’t choose anything until Logan gets here.”“True, but we care to browse out options.” Roman countered, “Hand me the remote will you,” he motioned to the side table on the other side from where he sat next to Patton.Patton glanced over to the table next to him then chuckled, “I don’t have it, its probably on your side.”Roman shook his head, “I already looked, you have it.”Patton shook his head, “Nope,” he stood up and looked at the coffee table and then by the TV, “it's not anywhere.”“What!” Roman said with his typical theatrics, “You lost it!” Patton crossed his arms and gave Roman a look, “..Well, we lost it.”Patton sighed, “Are you sitting on it?” Roman quickly checked then shook his head, “Gosh okay get up we need to find it.”The first five minutes of searching were spent with laughter and jokes. The next ten minutes were Patton and Roman panicking trying to find this remote.Logan came home carrying three big bags of groceries to find the living room absolutely demolished. The couch cushions were thrown about, and the things that filled the TV stand and coffee table were all taken out.He put the groceries he had on the counter before walking into the living room. He watched Roman crawl all around the base of the couch using his phone as a flashlight. Patton came out of his own room when he heard the door open and close.“Logan! You’re home!” Patton said with a nervous kind of happiness, now very aware of how dirty the living room was.Logan looked around in shock, “What happened here?”Roman rolled over and lay on the ground, “we lost the remote and now my back hurts.”“Oh,” Logan said, “Okay... Well, I’m going to put the groceries away, and how about your guys put the living room back to… being liveable. ““Yeah,” Patton looked at the living room gritting his teeth, “Come on Roman,” he helped his boyfriend get up from the floor.Logan started to rummage through the bags, taking out the things that needed to be refrigerated. He started to load the fridge, moving a few things around to fit the new items. He saw a familiar black plastic item. With a sigh, he pulled the remote from the fridge.“I found it!” Logan called out, placing the remote on the counter next to him while he finished putting away the groceries.“HA!” Roman yelled in triumphant. He ran over and grabbed the remote, not before pulling Logan into a kiss, “You can pick the movie.”Logan rolled his eyes fondly, “Oh good,”

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Patton walked from the rollercoaster trying to keep his balance steady. He was gripping onto Roman like if he let go he would disappear. He didn’t know what was worse. The terrifying rollercoasters or the scare actors littering the park.Going to Fright Fest was Roman’s idea. He had been extremely excited about attending. Roman loved everything scary and horror-filled. Patton… was less thrilled. They had only been at the park for about an hour and Patton was terrified, Roman knew this.He kept his arm around his boyfriend as they walked, “Pat are you okay?” Roman questioned.Patton chuckled nervously, one arm around Roman’s waist trying to pretend like they were just being one of those annoying roller coaster park couples, “Yup.”Roman kissed Patton’s head affectionately, “Shall we go to a different roller coaster?” he didn’t even ask about any mazes. He knew Patton would rather not do them but wouldn’t say no if Roman offered it up.“Yes that would be great,” Patton much rathered the rollercoasters and then walked around the park. Less scary actors harassed them when they were standing in line.“Or maybe should we go home?” Roman offered up, leading the way to the next coaster. He carefully tried to avoid the careful eyes of the scary actors. Though they often gravitated to Patton, they could see his obvious fear.“No no no,” Patton said immediately, “there is so much more to do” he watched a scare actor run up on a group of teens scaring them, “… and see.”Roman chuckled, “are you sure? Cause I’m okay with going home now,” he would never put his own enjoyment over Patton’s comfort.Patton smiled, “I’m sure, let’s just get in another line.”The two of them enjoyed the park for another few hours until they were both too tired to walk another step. Roman led them out of the park, yet Patton still held in until they entered the car and the doors were locked. With a large sigh of relief, Patton dragged a hand down his face, “oh goodness”Roman shook his head fondly, “Never again,” he started the car and carefully began the drive home.“What why?” Patton questioned, watching Roman drive.“Because you didn’t like it, I’ll just go next year with friends,” Roman didn’t mean it in any negative way, he just knew Patton didn’t enjoy himself.“It was terrifying” Patton responded as he crossed his arms.Roman rolled his eyes fondly, “Exactly, I’ll drag Logan along next,”“I’m not saying I didn’t like it! I’m just saying I’m an absolute scaredy cat.” Patton added, “I just need some cute cartoons before we go to bed.”Roman nodded in understanding.
