Taehyung opens his eyes and reaches out to the other side of the bed. Cold and empty. He picks up his phone from the nightstand. It’s past three in the morning and Jungkook is still out. His phone falls on Jungkook's side of the bed as he tries to sleep again. But try as he might, he can't relax and go into slumber. He really wants to let this one go, but his patience is wearing thin. So he sits up in bed leaning his back on the headboard, grabs his phone angrily and dials Jungkook's number. He breathes in and out to calm himself. He doesn't want a fight. The phone rings feel endless for Taehyung until it goes to voicemail. He looks at the ceiling to prevent the tears from falling and debates with himself if he should call again. Wanting Jungkook to be beside him at the moment, he tries one more time. It connects at the fourth ring."Baby bear, why are you still up?" he hears him slurring from the other end of the line. "I told you to get some rest. It's our special day tomorrow."Taehyung hears laughter when Jungkook pauses."Oh, it's today!" Jungkook giggles. "I got confused for a moment because I haven't slept yet.""Hmmm," Taehyung tries to control his irritation. "Bun, it's almost four in the morning. We're getting married in a little over twelve hours.""Wait baby, I'm going back to the hotel," Jungkook whispers then clears his throat. "Yah! Let's go back to the hotel now! I'm getting married!" Taehyung hears Jungkook shout to his friends. He hears protests that the sun is not up yet and they must drink until morning."Okay! So I'll drive myself then," Jungkook says. "Mingyu! Give me your keys.""You're not driving when you're drunk, Jeon Jungkook!" Taehyung shouts at his phone. "Stay there. I will pick you up!""No! You must rest now," Jungkook protests. "I can handle myself. I'll be there before you know it.""Between us, you're the one who needs rest," Taehyung says patiently. “You’ve been up all night.”"Nah! I'm a strong man! I don't need rest," Jungkook reasons out. "I'm okay now, promise. I'll drive so you don't need to get up.""If you drive yourself to here, I swear I will not marry you later!" Taehyung warns. "Just stay there and wait for me.""Baby, trust me, you don't need to pick me up," Jungkook insists. "I'm sure you're still naked right now. You don't need to worry yourself about me."He is right. Taehyung is naked. He sleeps naked, that's why."That's exactly what you're doing to me," Taehyung responds. "You're making me worry. Please stay where you are and just wait for me. I want you to be my husband come this afternoon. Don't be silly and do things that might potentially harm you.""I'm sorry for worrying you," Jungkook says, pouting. "I'll wait for you by the roadside so you don't need to park.""Don't go out yet," Taehyung commands. "We don't want you to catch a cold and be sniffling during the ceremony. People might think that you’re not happy about our marriage. I'll call you when I'm outside the place.""Okay, please take care, baby," Jungkook says sweetly. "I love you.""I love you, too," Taehyung quickly responds. "I'll see you in a few minutes." He cuts the call and hurriedly gets dressed into shorts and a loose shirt - all Jungkook's. He has yet to unpack his things. They're in Hawaii for their destination wedding. Taehyung just arrived around sixteen hours ago while Jungkook was already there for four days already, making sure that the ceremony, celebration and other details are in place. They were supposed to fly together with their families. But his gallery needed him to welcome a child art prodigy from New York whose flight was delayed for a few days because of sickness in the family. The child wanted to meet him, also a renowned artist himself, and a gallery director, and he agreed months before to meet him.He didn't expect the change in schedule and he also didn't want to break the child's heart. So here he is - jetlagged and not fully rested yet, going out of the hotel and getting in their rental car to fetch his soon-to-be husband who promised his close friends a drink on his last day as a bachelor.Taehyung loves Jungkook's friends. They get along very well. But at this particular moment, he wishes that they'd be considerate enough to think that the wedding is happening in a few hours. They only agreed to drink until midnight.Taehyung sighs as he drives. A few minutes later and he's slowing down in front of the bar by the beach. He dials Jungkook's number and immediately connects."Come out," he says straight up. "I'm outside." Then he cuts the call. He waits for a couple of minutes before he spots his fiancé.Jungkook is smiling from ear to ear but is walking unsteadily out of the bar towards their rented car. Taehyung shakes his head in frustration and decides to meet him halfway and support him to ensure that he will not fall flat on his face."You really needed to get this drunk, huh?""Hi, baby," Jungkook grins at him then hugs him tightly. "I love you so much, you know that, right?""I love you, too, bun," he readily answers back. "But for now, let go of me so we can go back to the hotel so you can catch up on some sleep, yeah?""Just a few minutes more," Jungkook hugs him even tighter. "I just miss you so much.""But we just saw each other before you left for the night out," Taehyung giggles. "Come on. Let's get some more sleep. We'll be busy come nine in the morning with all the preparations for our wedding.""Hmmm," Jungkook kisses his neck. "Husband. You'll be my husband later. Until forever, yeah?""Yeah, husband," Taehyung leans back. "Come on, let's go. You're really drunk. You're getting heavier by the minute."Jungkook is leaning comfortably on Taehyung, eyes closing."Just please walk some more to the car."Jungkook opens his eyes again and smiles brightly at him. He starts walking to the car, leaning heavily on Taehyung. He's really drunk, he realizes. "I'm sorry, baby. I will not get this drunk anymore," he says, slurring, as Taehyung guides him to the passenger seat."You're lucky you're cute," Taehyung says lovingly. "And I love you so, so much to let this go.""Thank you," Jungkook responds, closing his eyes as he settles on his seat. "I love you even more.""Fasten your seat belt," Taehyung says before closing the door. He goes around the car and drives immediately as soon as he starts the car. He looks at Jungkook and sees his relaxed face. He smiles, feeling content now that he's with him.On a sharp curve, Jungkook jerks on his seat and Taehyung sees that he doesn't have his seat belt on.When the road gets straight again, he parks on the side. He removes his own seat belt and leans in to put on his fiancé's.Taehyung pecks Jungkook's lips, smiling gently at him then fastens his seat belt.As he sits back, he is blinded by the light coming in front of them. He doesn't immediately realize the implication of it. But when it finally registers, on instinct, he jumps to cover Jungkook with his own body. Not a minute later, he feels the impact and prays they survive. Their car is dragged by the truck until it stops a few meters away. When it finally did, he looks at Jungkook below him and sees him breathing, a few shards of glass stuck on him, but he looks fine.Taehyung starts to cry. He tries to move to get his phone, call for help but he can't; to shout but it seems that his senses are not cooperating. "Bun," he whispers. But blood starts to come out of his mouth, falling on Jungkook's hair.He panics. "Help us, please," he begs to no one. "Help us." He wants to look around but he can't move. He cries even more, fear overpowering him, until he succumbs into blackness.___________________Jungkook feels like shit. His head is aching a lot like it never did before."Fuck, I will never drink ever again," he murmurs to himself. He reaches out to Taehyung's side of the bed but he feels the bed edge instead. He must've rolled over while sleeping, he thinks."Baby, I have a bad hangover," he says apologetically."He's awake," he hears his mother's panicked voice. He slowly opens his eyes and gasps when he sees his surroundings. "Why am I here?" He asks, confused. "My headache is not that bad to be hospitalized.""Call the doctor," Mr. Jeon taps his other son's shoulder and he complies hurriedly."Where's Tae?" Jungkook asks. "God, I'm sure I made him panic. Is he with the doctor?"He straightens up when he realized something. "What time is it? We're getting married today!"He tries to stand up but his right leg is trapped. He lifts the blanket covering his lower body and sees the unmoving leg in a cast. Jungkook looks at his parents, eyes full of fear. "What happened?" He whispers. "Where's Tae?"His mother runs to him and hugs him. "Shhhh.""Mom, where's Tae?" He asks again. "He's okay, right? Is he with the doctor?" He looks at his father. "Dad?" He breathes worriedly. "I must've fell down hard. I was so drunk."He furrows his brows trying to remember. "I remember Tae picking me up, I passed out, I guess." He looks at his parents alternately, wondering why they're too quiet."Son..." his father starts but the doctor enters just then with his brother and a nurse."Ah, I'm glad you're finally awake," the doctor says as he walks towards the bed. "Do you feel any pain in your body?""Just my head. It's throbbing badly," he answers politely."Anywhere else?" The doctors asks.Jungkook shakes his head."We've checked the results of your tests and aside from your fractured leg which will heal in about six to eight weeks, you only got a few wounds that would heal in no time," the doctor explains, smiling a little. "You're quite fortunate, considering the severity of the accident.""Accident?" Jungkook asks, totally clueless. "What accident doctor? What happened to me?"The doctor looks at Jungkook's parents."God, I can't remember anything," he closes his eyes, trying hard to recall what happened. But nothing comes to mind."You've been in a car accident," the doctor carefully says. "Your car is totalled.""What do you mean?" He asks nervously. "God, did I drive when I was drunk? Tae must be livid, fuck!" He stops, heart beating fast. "But Tae picked me up.""As per the rescue personnel that brought you from the scene, you were found in the passenger seat, Mr. Jeon," the doctor narrates with compassion. "According to their report, you were under your companion who seemed to have shielded you from the impact."Jungkook simply stares at the doctor. He chuckles, unbelieving. "You must be kidding." His tears start to fall. "Tae!" He shouts. "Tae is just outside, right? Is he paying my bills now?""Son, please calm down," Mrs. Jeon also starts to cry."Mom, where is Tae?" He asks, hysterical. "Tell me! Where is Tae?"The nurse hurriedly picks up a bottled water and opens it. "Please take a deep breath and drink some water first, Mr. Jeon," he says, trying to calm him down.Jungkook accepts the bottle and throws it across the room. He tries to stand up again but he simply can't. "Tae!" He shouts again, crying uncontrollably. "I beg you, please tell me where my fiancé is! I beg you! Please!""He's still in the operating room," Mr. Jeon finally answers, wiping his own tears."I'm going there!" Jungkook loudly shouts."Son, you won't be allowed in there," Mr. Jeon patiently tells him."Tae needs me," Jungkook reasons out, sobbing like a child."Mr. Jeon," the doctor interrupts. "I suggest that you stay here first. I will personally check on the status of Mr. Kim and update you immediately. ""I can't stay here," he responds stubbornly. "I need to be there. Even just outside.""Mr. Jeon, you need to rest," the doctor convinces him. "You were also in an accident and still needs to recover.""You just said that nothing is wrong with me!" He insists, glaring angrily. "Just a fracture and some wounds. I'm sure Tae is suffering more. Why can't you let me be there for him? Can you rest if you're in my shoes?" He weeps bitterly. "I can't stay here. Please. I just want to be there when the operating room opens so he'll see me waiting for him."The doctor sighs. He understands how his patient is feeling. It must be really devastating, so compassion wins over."Okay," he agrees. "You can stay at the waiting lounge just outside the operating room. I will be checking on you there. If your condition goes south, I will have to order you to go back here and sedate you so you can take a proper rest."Jungkook nods eagerly."Do you know how he is, doctor? My fiancé?""Unfortunately, I have no idea," he admits. "When you both arrived around twelve hours ago, I immediately focused on your case.""And Tae is still in surgery?" Jungkook whispers, heart breaking even more. "Twelve hours. We should've been married by now.""The team in all of Hawaii is attending to him at the moment," Jungkook's doctor tries to comfort him. "Let's be positive and hope for the best." He then turns to the nurse. "Please get a wheelchair so Mr. Jeon can wait outside the operating room.""We will accompany him there," Mrs. Jeon addresses the doctor. "We will call you, if...""You will not call him, Mom," Jungkook cuts her. "I'll be fine waiting at the lounge."The doctor excuses himself after that, reminding Jungkook that he will see him again in an hour to make sure that he is not exhausting himself.A few moments later and he is being wheeled to the area.Jungkook breaks down as soon as the automatic doors open. Taehyung's parents and sibling are huddled together in an embrace on the couch. In sync, they look at the threshold when they hear Jungkook bawling.Mrs. Kim hurriedly gets up and embraces Jungkook. "I'm so glad you're okay," she says sincerely."I'm sorry," Jungkook sobs. "It's all my fault! This is all my fault.""It's an accident, Jungkook," Mrs. Kim tries to console him. "No one is at fault. We can't even blame the truck driver who hit your car.""Is he also admitted here?" Mr. Jeon asks, totally unaware of the state of the truck driver."He's in the morgue," Mr. Kim responds. "He suffered from cardiac arrest while driving. That's why he totally lost control of the vehicle.""Oh my, God," Mrs. Jeon whispers."So it's really an unfortunate accident, Jungkook," Mrs. Kim still hugs him. "Don't blame yourself.""How's Tae?" Mr. Jeon asks, tentatively. "Do we have any information about him?""We still don't know the details," Mrs. Kim straightens and pushes Jungkook's wheelchair near the couches so they can all sit down to wait for Taehyung."We were told that he's unconscious. According to the doctor who were to operate him, there was an internal bleeding since blood was coming out of his mouth." She can't help but cry, recalling what the doctors told them earlier."But we're positive that Tae will survive this," Mr. Kim says with conviction. "We all know he's a strong one. And knowing how he loves us all, he will surely fight to be with us again. He's so excited to marry Jungkook, he will not leave without doing that. He will be so relieved that Jungkook only suffered minor injuries."Jungkook sobs again. "I'm really sorry," he repeats, holding Mrs. Kim's hand."Jungkook, please be calm," Mrs. Kim says kindly. "Your crying will not help you recover. You must be strong for Tae."But nothing consoles Jungkook. He's blaming himself for being out until the wee hours of the morning. He thinks if only he went back to the hotel at midnight as agreed upon, Taehyung wouldn't be in the operating room at the moment."He covered me with his own body," he says, almost inaudibly. "And he's suffering because of me.""It's a choice he made," Mrs. Kim gently says. "He loves you. We're sure you'd do that for him as well. It's just that he probably saw the accident coming since he was driving. You're probably not looking ahead at that time. And it's not your fault.""It's my fault," he cries again."Jungkook, please stop," says Mrs. Jeon. "You're making your in-laws uncomfortable."The Kim parents share a bothered look. They don't want Jungkook to feel bad about what happened. They also want to know what really happened and why they were out that early in the morning. But their want can be fulfilled later. What's important for them at the moment is to know that Taehyung is safe. And they're relieved that Jungkook is here with them, waiting for their son to wake up."Your friends were here earlier," Mr. Jeon decides to say. "But we asked them to go back to the hotel since they're so many. They were standing around waiting for news about you two. But the nurses and other patients requested not to crowd the hallways.""What about Tae's hyungs?" Jungkook asks. He just gained their trust recently. Taehyung is their youngest in the friend group and they're all protective of him."They were also here," Mr. Kim responds with a tired smile. "We also asked them to go back to the hotel. They were all crying, they're scaring some of the families around."With those words, Jungkook feels his heart dive again and he can't help but sob. "Sorry," he whispers. "I'm really sorry, Tae.""Why do you keep on saying sorry?" Sunhee, Taehyung's older sister and only sibling asks, visibly irritated. "Did you do something to Tae that makes you guilty now?""Sunhee!" Mr. Kim reprimands."What? I just want to know!" Sunhee flares up. "He keeps on saying sorry like he did something bad." She looks at Jungkook, challenging him. "Why were you out very early in the morning? Weren't you supposed to be resting at that time since it's your wedding day in a few hours?""He came to..." Jungkook can't go on, choking on his tears."What?" Sunhee probes further, starting to cry. "Tell us, Jungkook! We want to understand what happened. He was looking forward to today! Today was supposed to be the best day of his life. It turned into a nightmare.""Stop it, Sunhee," Mrs. Kim approaches her daughter. "This is not the right time!""When is the right time, Mom?" Sunhee angrily wipes her tears away. "I just want to know why my brother is still in the operating room right now and not in the reception of his own wedding!""Sunhee, please!" Mrs. Kim is already crying, too. "Your brother would not agree with how you're behaving right now."Mr. Kim moves closer to the Jeons. He looks at Jungkook and smiles sadly. Then he turns to his parents. "Can you please bring Jungkook to his room for now?""Dad, no!" Jungkook protests, holding Mr. Kim's arm. "Please let me stay here.""But you need to rest," Mr. Kim says. "We want you to be strong and healthy when Tae wakes up. He will surely look for you. You look like you're going to pass out any minute.""I'm totally fine." Jungkook insists. "I need to be here when the doctor comes out from the operating room. I just need to be here, Dad.""Jungkook, please listen to us for once, son," Mr. Jeon convinces him."Hyung," Jeonghoon, Jungkook's younger brother, calls him. "We can come back later.""No!" Jungkook shakes his head. "I'll just be here and be quiet. Just pretend I'm not here. I can't leave.""Okay," Mr. Kim sighs. "Just please ignore Sunhee's outbursts. I don't want you to feel like we're blaming you for what happened. We know you love Tae so much.""But you can blame me," Jungkook says in between sobs. "I did it to him.""Jungkook..." Mrs. Jeon tries to stop him."It's my fault," Jungkook claims all the blame. "I didn't come back to the hotel as promised. I was supposed to drink with my friends only until midnight. I stayed for a few hours more, and Tae had to fetch me because I'm too drunk to drive back. It's all on me. I'm really the one to blame.""How could you?" Sunhee reacts, heartbroken. "Why didn't you stick to your words? Just a few hours more of drinking cost you this! I am blaming you, Jungkook!""Sunhee! Stop it!" Mr. Kim says, voice firm but emotional."I didn't know this would happen," Jungkook whispers. "If only I...""If only you valued my brother who loves you so much over your friends and bottles of alcohol, we would not be here.""Hey! You better stop right now," Jeonghoon can't just stand there and let his brother be blamed for everything. "Tae hyungie wouldn't want you to blame Hyung! It was an accident!""Tell me, if it's the other way around, would you feel the same way?" Sunhee fires back. "If your brother is in the operating table right now, and Tae is right here, perfectly fine, would you not feel like it's unfair after hearing the damn reason why we're all here?""He is not perfectly fine!" Jeonghoon says back, this time with less conviction."Yeah, right!" Sunhee sneers."Please!" Mr. Kim says tiredly. "All of us are suffering right now. I must admit that I'm disappointed after learning why you were outside," he looks at Jungkook, then he turns to his daughter. "But blaming him would not make Tae get better. Let's not hurt one another even more."He pulls his wife to him for support. She's been crying silently since they found out what happened. Sunhee hugs them both, and they basically are in the same huddled position when the Jeons stepped in the waiting lounge earlier.Mr. Jeon crouches to meet his son's eyes. "Let's just wait in your room," he says softly. "I will request that they call us when there's news about Tae. We don't want them to feel more uncomfortable, and you need to rest."Jungkook shakes his head. "I'm not going anywhere. I can take all the blame. It's the truth.""Son, please," Mrs. Jeon begs."I'll stay here," Jungkook says firmly. "I'm here for Tae. I must be here when he wakes up. I need to tell him I'm sorry. And that I love him so much. And I will scold him for sacrificing his body for me because I don't deserve it at all."Having no other choice, the Jeons sit down around Jungkook, pulling chairs to be near him. They feel like they also need to protect him.All of them wait in silence for the next two hours. Only sniffles and occasional whispers are heard. On their third hour, the surgeon comes out, sighing tiredly."I assume you're all family of patient Taehyung Kim?" He asks, looking around."Yes, doctor," Mrs. Kim responds. "Is my son okay?""I'd be truthful with you. We did all we could to save him. But he's still in critical condition," he says honestly. "First responders found him face down, covering another person under him. He was not breathing."A collective gasp is heard in the lounge."If they were a minute late, the patient would've been found lifeless. But they were quick to place a breathing tube in his windpipe and transported him to here. A CT scan showed widespread swelling of the brain.""Oh my, God!" Sunhee reacts, crying immediately. "As early as now, we would like you to know that there's a high possibility that he will be in a coma. For a few days or weeks or months, we still need to evaluate his state."He drinks from the water bottle he is holding. Visibly tired. "We were able to save his spleen, which ruptured because of the impact. We're still treating pulmonary contusion or bruise in the lungs and pulmonary tissues. Hopefully, his lungs will fully recover in two weeks. We were relieved that there was no tear in the lungs."He looks around again. "His spinal cord was also injured. We already removed the glass fragments and fused the spinal bones together, and stabilized proper alignment. But we have yet to determine the degree of injury. A series of tests needs to be done. Once he wakes up, physical therapy will be critical to gradually recover muscle strength, mobility, communication, bowel and bladder control, and other functions. He will be moved to the intensive care unit in a few minutes before his next tests.""Can we see him, doctor?" Jungkook asks, his body shaking after knowing the extent of Taehyung's injuries."Of course," the doctor responds. "But we can only allow one or two at a time. You can go back to the hotel and rest. Our nurses will take care of him."Just before the others can open their mouths to ask questions, the operating room doors slide open again. A bed with a lot of tubes is wheeled out by the scrub nurse and resident doctors. The other doctors walk behind them.Cries of anguish are heard all around the lounge. It's so heartbreaking for all of them to see Taehyung in that condition."The first two can go with them already," the surgeon informs them. "Then the others can wait. I advise that you to go back to your hotel after seeing him. We will call you for any improvement or anything else.""Mom, Dad," Sunhee catches their attention. "Go, follow Tae."Mrs. Kim looks at her husband, their eyes communicating. In understanding, Mr. Kim nods in agreement."I'm taking Jungkook with me," Mrs. Kim announces as she walks to his wheelchair, pushing to the direction of the ICU."What?" Sunhee is shocked. "Mom! What about Dad? You're Tae's parents. You should be the ones to be with Tae first."Mrs. Kim doesn't look back and continues to walk away."Mom!" She calls loudly."Just let them go first," Mr. Kim shuns her. "We will go together after them.""But he doesn't even deserve to go there!" Sunhee sulks, still very angry about the whole situation."You're being unreasonable, Sun," Mr. Kim sighs."But Dad,""Listen, Sun," Mr. Kim cuts her off before she says something again that might totally offend the Jeons. "We're all devastated because of what happened. Yes, it could have been avoided, but we're already here in this situation. We're all hurt. But put yourself in Jungkook's shoes, too. We know he loves your brother just as much as your brother loves him. He made this one mistake. If you looked at him properly earlier, you could've seen the anguish in his face. His guilt is consuming him. Let's not add to that."He sighs and sits down on the couch. "Taehyung, is the one in critical condition physically," he glances at the Jeons who look grateful to him. "Jungkook is the one who is dying emotionally. Let's not let it happen. Tae loves Jungkook. He'd be disappointed if he finds out one of us is putting a blame on him.""Dad," Sunhee breaks down. "I'm scared. I just want Tae to wake up and see his lovely smile. I can't lose him.""And we will not lose him," he says, doubting his own words. "So let's be decent human beings as we deal with this situation."Sunhee simply nods as he hugs his father and cries on his shoulder. The people in the lounge have no idea that Jungkook heard the whole conversation."I want you to know that we're here for you, son," Mrs. Kim says gently to him.She stopped walking earlier as soon as her husband started talking. They have the same stand in the situation. "Yes, we are disappointed. But we know that you are, too. So stop blaming yourself."Jungkook starts to cry again. "I don't deserve this treatment. It's better if you get angry, if you tell me it's all my fault because I feel that it really is. Just don't keep Tae away from me.""Did you plan for this to happen?" Mrs. Kim asks, moving to the ICU again. He shakes his head."Then I'd ask you something," Mrs. Kim stops again. "I hope you answer me honestly."Jungkook nods again."In the five years that you and Tae were together, we only heard good things about you," Mrs. Kim says, pensive. "He had no complaints against you. Even when you moved in together last year after your engagement, he repeatedly told us how a loving fiancé you are and that he's so lucky to have you.""Mom, we know that between us, I'm the lucky one," Jungkook smiles bitterly. "Tae is so precious. He's everything to me.""Yeah, he is," she sighs. "Since you told us about what really happened, there's this one question in mind that I feel that I need to ask. Is drinking with your friends and getting too drunk habitual? I'm not judging you. I just want to know.""No!" Jungkook answers honestly. "It was a one-time thing. I admit that before I met Tae, I was always with friends, going out in bars or hanging out in their apartments. But when Tae and I started dating, I seldom saw them, usually just on birthdays or other occasions where I also brought Tae as my plus one. Last night happened because they told me it was our last time hanging out. They know I'll be back to my usual routine once we go back home. They were actually right, especially when I was set to take over as CEO of our company after our honeymoon. So I gave them some more hours. Which turned out to be the biggest mistake of my life. I should've kept my word that I'll be back by midnight. But I didn't. I regret that I made the wrong choice." Jungkook cries silently and Mrs. Kim pushes his wheelchair to the ICU again, choosing not to comment on Jungkook's confession. As soon as they reach Taehyung's bedside, Jungkook bursts into tears again. He repeatedly says sorry and promises to be a better man for his fiancé.Seeing Taehyung up close, with all the bruises, all the tubes attached to him, so fragile and weak, ignite fear in Jungkook. He's suddenly so afraid that he'd lose him, and the thought makes him shake all over."Jungkook," Mrs. Kim whispers, placing her hand on Jungkook's shoulder. But he continues to shake as he cries his heart out in agony. Mrs. Kim calls for help, worried about him.A minute later, his doctor, along with a resident and a nurse, arrive to check on him. The nurse wheels him out of the ICU and into his room, with him protesting weakly."I need to be beside Tae," he wails as his family enters his room."Mr. Jeon, please listen to me," his doctor says firmly. "We can't let you continue like that. As your doctor, I prescribe that you stay here until you fully recover.""But Tae needs me," Jungkook protests."He doesn't," the doctor says honestly. "Let's be frank here. Your presence will do nothing for him now. He has a team of doctors who are taking care of his needs. You, on the other hand, need to calm down and have a good rest.""But how can I do that? I need to be beside him," Jungkook stubbornly says. The doctor sighs, nodding to the resident. They guide Jungkook to his bed.Jungkook still protests, but he's too weak to shake off the other two."If you don't cooperate, we'd need to sedate you," the doctor warns. "Mr. Jeon, this is for your own good. I promise that I will let you go back to the ICU after you take your food and get some sleep. You need to be strong first before you can provide strength to your fiancé. And if you truly want to be there for him, focus on yourself now so you can take care of him later."Jungkook relents and lies down, turning away from everyone, crying silently until he falls asleep.___________________Jungkook wakes up to hushed voices inside his room. He realizes they are Taehyung's friends, and instead of greeting them, he pretends that he's still sleeping, not having the courage to face them."Sir, we're really glad that Jungkook is fine," Wooshik tells Mr. Jeon. "It's very heartbreaking even for us that their wedding will be delayed. Tae was so looking forward to the occasion.""The only things he talked about the past months were about his wedding," Seojoon chuckles bitterly. "We're sorry we can't stay longer. Our flight is tonight.""We would've wanted to offer Jungkook our support before we leave," Hyungsik adds. "But we understand he needs to rest and recover fast.""Thank you for being our son's friends as well," Mr. Jeon responds. "I'll make sure to let him know you were here and supporting them.""Tae is like a little brother to us since middle school," Sunghwan tells Mr. Jeon fondly. “We're so glad he found Jungkook. It was natural for us to extend our friendship to him as well. We know how they love each other.""Please tell him that he can call any of us anytime," Wooshik offers. "We will make ourselves available if they'll need us back here. We thought of extending our stay, but we know having a lot of people might be more of an inconvenience to you."Mr. Jeon smiles in understanding. "Have a safe flight back home," he says sincerely. They say a few more things of encouragement and goodbyes before they finally leave.Jungkook listens for a little while, and when he is sure that no one else but his father is around, he opens his eyes and slowly sits up. "Dad?" How's Tae? Can I go to him now?""You're awake," Mr. Jeon walks to his bedside. "Let me call the nurse first. You were out for two days.""Two days?" He panics and only then notices the IV drip attached to his arm. "Tae must already be looking for me.""Son, I'm sorry, but his condition has yet to improve," Mr. Jeon says carefully. "Let me call someone to check on you."Jungkook tries hard not to cry. He knows he needs to be strong for Taehyung. But he can't help his tears from falling uncontrollably. He wipes them away when the door opens to reveal a nurse followed by his father."How are you feeling, Mr. Jeon," the lady says cheerfully.Jungkook scowls. He wants to call out the nurse for being too happy. But he keeps mum instead."Let me check your vitals," she says when she realizes that Jungkook would not answer her. After a few minutes, and finding everything in order, she leaves."Now, can I go to Tae?" He asks his father. He wouldn't even ask if he could go there by himself. But since he still can't, he needs his father's help."Your brother is getting some breakfast for us," Mr. Jeon says in response. "Eat first. Then I'll take you to the ICU."Jungkook nods dejectedly. "Where's Mom?""I brought her back to the hotel," Mr. Jeon informs him. "She needs to rest, too.""I'm sorry," he whispers. "I did this to all of you.""We learned a lesson or two," Mr. Jeon sighs. "Tae's hyungs just left a few minutes ago. They wished you fast recovery and insisted that you could call them anytime.""I heard," Jungkook admits.Mr. Jeon raises an eyebrow."I just can't face them yet," Jungkook rubs his face. "They asked me to take care of Tae and look what I've done.""They know what happened. And they're not blaming you.""I know, which makes everything more unbearable," Jungkook admits. "Everyone's so understanding, I don't deserve it.""Your guilt would eat you up if you let it," Mr. Jeon states flatly. "Son, it would be better if you focus on now and the future."Jungkook simply nods. He wants to, but it's hard for him not to blame himself."And not everyone is so forgiving," Mr. Jeon reminds him. "Sunhee is still blaming you. And your Mom is blaming your friends.""I understand, Noona. Tae is her baby. She dotes on him," he explains. "I even hate myself for what happened. And Mom, I can also relate with. I can't see my friends now without feeling resentful.""Your Mom didn't let them in here when they visited last night," Mr. Jeon narrates. "She was livid when she saw them in the hallway, looking for you. She told them that she trusted them, but somehow, she felt betrayed with their actions."Jungkook whines. "They don't deserve all the blame. Yes, they encouraged me to drink more and not to leave. But at the end of the day, I was the one who stayed and didn't keep my word."The door opens just then and Jeonghoon enters, balancing a bag and some beverages. "Hyung, you're awake," he says, visibly surprised and relieved. "I have here chicken noodle soup for you and some bread, too.""I'll eat it now," Jungkook beckons. He badly needs to see Tae.Fifteen minutes, and he's being wheeled to the ICU, finding Mr. Kim sitting on the lounge just outside."Dad," he greets him tentatively."Jungkook," he smiles tiredly. "How are you feeling? You look a lot better now.""My body feels stronger." Jungkook says, respectful. He looks around, and Mr. Kim gets it."They're back in the hotel," he says. "They'll be back tonight.""Is there any improvement with Tae?" Mr. Jeon asks."His lungs are healing along with his spleen," he responds. "But he's neither awake nor aware. He's in a coma."Jungkook blows air, trying so hard not to burst into tears. "Can I see him?" He asks."Of course," Mr. Kim agrees and gestures for them to go inside. Mr. Jeon wheels him inside."Here's your phone," he hands Jungkook the gadget. It looks just the way it was. No damage at all."Just call me when you want to go back to your room. I'll be outside with Tae's dad."Jungkook reaches out to hold Tae's hand, the one without tubes attached to it. Mr. Jeon can't help but tear up with the scene. He leaves the room after immediately."Tae," Jungkook whispers. His tears start to fall. "Wake up, baby bear." He caresses his hand, hurting because Taehyung looks so frail. "Baby," he sobs. "Please don't sleep too long. We're still getting married, yeah? So you need to open your eyes and see how sorry I am. I promise to be a better fiancé, and the best husband, if you let me."He touches his face and caresses his cheek. He gasps when Taehyung opens his eyes slightly. "Tae?" His heart is beating fast. "Can you hear me? Tae?" But Taehyung still doesn't respond. Jungkook dials his father's number."Dad! Call Tae's doctor!" He hurriedly says. "His eyes are open!" His heart is beating fast. He hopes this is a positive sign. The doctor and two others rush to the ICU not a minute later. Jungkook wheels himself near the wall to give way to them so they can check on Taehyung.Mr. Kim also enters the room and stands beside Jungkook, hope visible in his features. After a while, the doctor faces them. "Spontaneous eye opening would occur from time to time," he starts. "He is awake, but not aware of his surroundings. He is still unconscious. The presence of these brainstem functions is favorable but doesn't really indicate when or whether he would eventually recover consciousness.""What do you mean, doctor?" Jungkook asks, confused."It means that some parts of his brain are functioning properly," he explains. “But we'll have to wait. He is now in a vegetative state."Mr. Kim and Jungkook stare blankly at the doctor."He has reflex responses, but because he is not conscious, he can't experience either pain or suffering," the doctor explains."I don't know what to feel about it," Mr. Kim mumbles. "I'm sad that he is still unconscious about his surroundings. But at the same time, I'm relieved that he's not suffering."Jungkook nods his head. That's exactly how he's feeling."There's nothing we can do but wait at this point," the doctor advises. "But I have to be honest with you. This may be a temporary stage in recovery from a coma or may be more longstanding if the brain injuries are more severe and irreversible than we thought. We can't tell when or if he will ever fully wake up. We don't want to give you false hopes. What we can promise is we will give him the best care possible.""And we are grateful for that, doctor," Mr. Kim bows a little. So does Jungkook."But doctor, you know that we're from another country," Taehyung's father states. "Is it possible for us to take him home?""Not anytime soon," the doctor responds. "In a few weeks, maybe. When we're sure that his body can endure the long flight back to your home country."Mr. Kim hums in understanding. "Thank you so much, doctor.""Thank you, doctor," Jungkook also whispers, truly grateful. They approach Taehyung when the others leave."I need to go back home soon," Mr. Kim says sadly. "Your father and I talked earlier, and we decided to go back together.""I will be staying here until Tae wakes up," Jungkook confirms what the fathers guessed earlier. "We will come home together. We might call you back here so we can push through with the wedding. Just a small one. With only our immediate families."Mr. Kim smiles. He's relieved that Jungkook is staying positive despite the obvious hopelessness of the situation at the moment. They keep quiet for a minute or two until Mr. Kim responds. "We'll be glad to come back," he says positively, patting Jungkook's shoulder to give comfort.Jungkook feels hope in his heart. They'll go through this unfortunate event together. Except nothing like that will happen.___________________It's been almost three months and Jungkook has finally fully healed. He rushes to Taehyung after his cast is removed. His fiancé was transferred to a regular room a month ago, and Jungkook requested that they stay in one. The doctors and the Kims agreed without question.Jungkook was supposed to be discharged months ago, but he insisted that he stay in the hospital instead of in a hotel room far away. Since there were not many patients confined, the hospital management agreed to the set-up, considering the situation of the fiancés.Their mothers look up as soon as Jungkook enters the room."It is okay that you rushed like that?" Mrs. Jeon reprimands him. "Your cast was just removed. You must not strain your leg like that.""I'm totally fine, Mom," Jungkook responds, not even looking at his mother. His eyes are fixed on Taehyung."Hey baby bear, I'm all healed now," he whispers to him. "Can you wake up already?" Still, there's no response from Taehyung. Jungkook sighs sadly. Taehyung has fewer wires attached to him, but he's still in vegetative state. The doctor informed them the previous night that Taehyung could regain awareness as late as twelve months after the accident. But after that, the possibility of recovery is very slim. Jungkook is sure that Taehyung will wake up before then. He has to. Or he'd rather die as well."You can both go back home," Jungkook looks at the two women. "You've been away too long. I can take care of Tae by myself. The medical staff here are also great, so you don't need to worry.""Son, have you talked to your Dad?" Mrs. Jeon asks hesitantly."I'm staying, Mom," Jungkook says firmly. "I'm not leaving Tae here in a foreign country on his own.""I'll be here," Mrs. Kim responds. "I'll stay with him.""Mom, you know what I mean," Jungkook looks at Mrs. Kim, eyes pleading."Tae would understand," Mrs. Kim smiles at him. "He knows you're about to take over as the CEO of your company.""It can wait," Jungkook says stubbornly. "We're in different circumstances now. I can't leave Tae like this."Mrs. Jeon sighs. "I'll talk to your father. He can talk to the board to give you a few more months.""My husband is trying to find a rehabilitation hospital in Daegu that can accommodate Tae," Mrs. Kim says. "Another option is for him to stay home with us and hire critical care nurses. We have to find a doctor first who can visit him every day.""Or a good hospital in Seoul," Jungkook insists. "So I can be there for him.""We've been through this, Jungkook," Mrs. Kim says. "I understand you want to be with Tae every time. But it's unfair for you to stop your life because of him. You can visit him in Daegu every weekend."Jungkook sighs and nods."And remember those are just plans. I'm afraid we won't be able to do that until his doctor here gives him a clearance," Mrs. Kim reminds them. "Sunhee is insisting that Tae stay here since his doctor knows his history and all. I don't know. I just wish he'd wake up soon."___________________After a week, the two mothers decide to go home. Jungkook, left alone with Taehyung, devotes his everything to his fiancé. But he can't do much but stare and be there with him. Taehyung's condition is not improving, and Jungkook starts to get frustrated. It goes on for two more months. Jungkook all alone, staying in the hospital with Taehyung. Taehyung's parents and his own call every day to check on their status. But it stays the same. Some of the hospital staff starts to invite him to their houses or to meals outside. But he always declines. He can't leave Taehyung. It's the sole reason he is staying. He checks social media, his friends going on with their lives, tagging him from time to time when they post throwback photos. Taehyung's friends are the same.Of course, they continue living their own lives. The only difference is that they never forget to check on Taehyung at least once a week, still sending messages of prayers and how much they miss him. They also send messages of strength for Jungkook. Two weeks before the sixth month, their parents arrived back."You didn't tell me you're coming back," Jungkook yawns as they welcome them in their hospital room. He just woke up."How are you, son?" Mr. Jeon asks."Still the same. Nothing has changed at all since you left," Jungkook shrugs, looking sadly at Taehyung. "You could've just called instead. You just tire yourself out with the flight."The parents share a look at one another, and Jungkook sees it. "You're here for a reason," Jungkook says his thoughts. "Are we finally bringing Tae back home? His doctor didn't mention anything.""Jungkook, it's time for you to go home," Mr. Kim gently tells him.Jungkook gasps. "You need to go on with your life," Mrs. Kim tells him kindly. "That's what Tae would want you to do.""We've been through this," Jungkook protests. "I told you I'm not leaving Tae here.""Son, it's been months," Mrs. Jeon joins in. "The company is waiting for you.""Exactly, it's just a few months," Jungkook responds. "Tae will wake up soon. We're not even close to a year yet. I'm not abandoning him.""You're not abandoning him," Mrs. Kim says. "You'll just live your life. You can always visit or check on him. I'll stay here and you can call me anytime. We'll video call so you can see him still.""Mom," Jungkook whines and starts to cry. "How can I do that? I'm the reason why he's like this. How can I leave?""Do you honestly want to be here? Do you enjoy spending your time in a hospital room talking and not getting any response?" Mr. Kim asks."It doesn't matter if I enjoy it or not. It's my obligation to be here with Tae," Jungkook responds. He's been frustrated, and down the past months, it's true. "It's my responsibility to be with Tae. I'm his fiancé.""It's not. He is not your obligation or responsibility," Mrs. Kim says firmly. "He is our responsibility. We are his family. You are his fiancé, not yet his husband." She didn't mean to be so harsh, but it's the truth."Mom, you don't mean that," Jungkook sobs. "We could've been...""But you aren't," Mrs. Kim cuts him. "Your wedding did not push through because of the accident." Mr. Kim holds Mrs. Kim's waist, knowing that she needs the support. She loves Jungkook like his own son."We want you to live your life, Jungkook," Mrs. Kim continues. "That's what Tae would want you to do.""Son, please listen to us," Mrs. Jeon approaches her son to embrace him. "We know this is going to hurt you, but it's time for you to think about yourself and your future.""The company is waiting for you," Mr. Jeon states. "I barely convinced the board to wait for you."Jungkook looks at the faces around him, he knows they all care about him."I'll pay for Tae's hospitalization from now," Jungkook says. He still wants to do something for him."No," Mr. Kim quickly says. "It's my responsibility as his father. Just save your money, and when he wakes up, take him to a lavish vacation. Spend it on him when he's aware of it.""Then what should I do?" Jungkook whispers. "I need to do something for him if I'd leave him.""Just live your life to the fullest and remember that you're doing it for Tae," Mrs. Kim smiles gently."Can I stay for at least another month?" Jungkook pleads. "I'm positive he'd wake up soon."The fathers look at each other. "Okay," Mr. Jeon agrees. "Just another month.""I promise I'll come home by myself by then," Jungkook says seriously. "I just need to have more time with Tae. Or who knows, we might come home together.""Let's hope so," Mr. Kim shakes his head.Jungkook comes home alone after a month.___________________Jungkook enters their apartment and immediately breaks down. He didn't want to leave Taehyung, but he agreed to start living his own life again. He walks to the couch, and he sees a photo album open on the coffee table. Taehyung must have left it there. He reaches out to grab the album and look at the page Taehyung was looking at. He sees a couple of pictures of the two of them on one page, all of them he is looking somewhere else while Taehyung is looking fondly at him.Taehyung mentioned before that he especially loves those. Because those photos make him feel the same way he felt when those were taken - overflowing love for Jungkook. On the opposite page of the album is a photo that both of them love. It's him back hugging Taehyung while they were in an audience for an event. He remembers the moment.Taehyung was not feeling well that day, so Jungkook was extra clingy. He wanted to go home so Taehyung could rest, but his fiancé protested since it's a company event and both their families were there.Jeon Motors is the second-largest automaker in the country. Their fathers and grandfathers knew one another for so long, since Kim Automotive System is the Jeon Motors' provider of car parts.Jungkook met Sunhee during meetings between their companies, and she always mentioned a baby brother who was not at all interested in business. They finally met when Jeon Motors sponsored Taehyung's exhibit. Jungkook ended up buying a couple of Taehyung's artwork to get to know him.It helped that the families already had a business relationship. It was a breeze for them to be in a romantic one, too. Everything was easy.He sighs, remembering their past. He worries about their future. The first month he's away from Taehyung, he calls daily. In the second month, the calls decrease. He's been so busy preparing for the turnover to take place in a month. He will be the new CEO of Jeon Motors. Two weeks before the turnover, he visits Taehyung, just a couple of hours to see him and tell him that he loves him. And that he's going to be the CEO of their company, something they both wanted. He takes the next flight out because he can't stay longer than a few hours.Jungkook becomes the CEO of Jeon Motors ten months after the accident. The calls to Hawaii become a weekly thing."Mom, I'm sorry I can't call that often anymore," Jungkook apologizes. "I'm always holed up in the office. I can't even go home that much."Mrs. Kim understands."Mom, just call me if anything happens," Jungkook requests. "My secretary knows that if it's you who's calling, I need to immediately answer."Mrs. Kim understands.A year after the accident, the doctor calls on the immediate family. Mr. Kim and Sunhee fly to Hawaii. They also told Jungkook, but he's in Germany for a partnership meeting with another company."Taehyung was showing signs of consciousness, but his degree of neurologic functioning was not sufficient for him to communicate his needs or to care for himself," the doctor says. "His condition progressed to the minimally conscious state. In the past weeks, he had fleeting but inconsistent responses, which we believe are signs of him being conscious now.""Oh my God," Mrs. Kim cries. "Does this mean he will wake up soon?""His condition is improving," the doctor explains carefully. "But we can't guarantee that he will wake up soon."The family nods."I need you to know that when he becomes conscious, he will already feel pain, and he will be aware of his circumstances, but he will still not be able to communicate it to us. He may continue to improve and eventually move and talk to us, though it will be a long process. But it can also fluctuate and make his condition worse."He smiles encouragingly to the family. "In the event that he fully wakes up, he would just be that, awake," the doctor further explains. "It would take more months for him to fully recover and care for himself or even engage in complex social interactions. He would need your support.""As long as he recovers, doctor," Sunhee says. "We will do what we can for him."Jungkook arrives a week after. Taehyung's father and sister already left for Korea. He is so happy to know of Taehyung's improvement and hopes that he will be awake soon. He wants to see Taehyung back on his feet again, doing the things he loves. Jungkook stays for a day.In the next three months, Taehyung can already open his eyes. He always looks around as if surveying the room. But he still can't talk.He can move his head and lift his arms but still uncoordinated. Jungkook continues to call at least once a week, and Taehyung can see him. Each call, just a minute or two. Jungkook says he's busy and simply smiles at Taehyung, who looks blankly at him.Mrs. Kim is bothered because Taehyung is always crying. The doctor says he must be frustrated because he can't function like before and he is aware of his situation. On the sixteenth month, Jungkook arrives and cries when their eyes finally meet. That's the only time Taehyung opened his eyes for him, though. When he closed them, he never opened them again in Jungkook's presence."Are we sure he's okay?" Jungkook asks. "Didn't he recognize me?"The doctor looks at Taehyung. "He is slowly improving. His bodily functions are not yet there, but we believe that he will regain them. We can't tell what's on his mind, though. His thoughts are only his."Mrs. Kim knows that his son is awake. He just refuses to open his eyes.Jungkook looks helplessly at Mrs. Kim, who pats his back in encouragement."Talk to him," she whispers.Jungkook steps closer to the bed and holds Taehyung's hand. The doctor and Mrs. Kim leave to give them privacy. "Baby bear, I'm here. Can you hear me?" Jungkook says softly.Taehyung's eyes remain closed."I'm sorry I was not here when you first opened your eyes. I'm now the CEO of Jeon Motors." Jungkook caresses his cheek. "You look a lot better now than the last time," he says positively. "I hope we can go home soon. I'll take care of you."Jungkook looks at Taehyung's face. He is so thin but still so beautiful. "I will be leaving again tonight. I don't want to. I just want to stay here with you until you fully recover." He sighs, heart sinking. He feels so heavy with Taehyung's lack of acknowledgement."Are you mad because I left?" He asks, starting to get frustrated. "I'm sorry. I did this to you. I’m really sorry. You should've saved yourself then," he sobs. "If only I kept my word, right? Tae, at least look at me," he pleads. But still, there's nothing on Taehyung's end.Jungkook can't do anything but hug him close, careful not to touch the remaining tubes attached to him. "I love you, Tae," he whispers again and again. He has no idea how long they stay like that. He even fell asleep. He just realized when Mrs. Kim calls out his name."You need to leave now if you don't want to miss your flight," Mrs. Kim smiles sadly at him."Mom, how can I leave now?" Jungkook asks. "Are we sure Taehyung is okay?"Mrs. Kim sighs. "I'll just call you if there's significant change, yeah?"Jungkook nods in agreement. He kisses Taehyung's cheek and embraces Mrs. Kim."Have a safe flight, son." He goes back to Taehyung and kisses his forehead this time. "I love you, Tae. I hope you can hear me." He straightens up, smiles at Mrs. Kim and goes out the door.Mrs. Kim massages her temple. She walks to Taehyung's bedside and starts to run her fingers through his hair. "Son, what are you doing?" She asks gently. "Why did you pretend you're asleep?"Her heart breaks for the lovers. It breaks even more when she sees tears flowing out of his son’s eyes.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Another week passes by since Jungkook's visit.Mrs. Kim is reading an e-book on her phone when she startles and runs beside Taehyung."Mom," Taehyung says softly."Oh my God," she burst into tears. "You're talking.""Home," Taehyung whispers. "Let's go home.""We will go home," Mrs. Kim cries happily. "Let me call the doctor quickly."He arrives immediately and checks on Taehyung. He smiles and nods at Mrs. Kim in assurance."How do you feel?" He asks Taehyung. "Are you hurt somewhere?""Tired," Taehyung responds. "Can we go home?""We will have to check on everything first to make sure that you're okay to travel long distance," the doctor explains. The doctor then leaves and promises to be back for the tests. He also needs to check on other patients."I'll call your Dad," Mrs. Kim says."Not yet," Taehyung stops his mother. "Call when we're sure I'm okay.""I'll just tell him you're already talking," Mrs. Kim insists. "It's such good news for us to keep."Taehyung nods. His father and Sunhee are elated. Taehyung says hi to them, and they cry, too happy."We will call Jungkook so he can call you," Mr. Kim volunteers. "He'll be so happy.""Who is Jungkook?" Taehyung asks, voice soft and unsteady.Mr. Kim and Sunhee look at each other. Then they look at the screen."Mom?" Sunhee calls out nervously. "Is Tae okay?""I'm okay," it's Taehyung who responds. "Just tired, Noona.""Do I tell Jungkook about this?" Mr. Kim looks at his wife.Mrs. Kim sighs, looking at Taehyung carefully. "Let him know that Tae can already speak, and more tests will be done to make sure his recovery is good.""Okay," Mr. Kim agrees hesitantly. "I love you, Tae. We'll come soon.""I love you, Dad," he smiles weakly. "I love you, too, Noona.""We'll see you soon," Sunhee promises."I'll cut the call now, I think the doctor is coming," Mrs. Kim says and clicks the red button. She looks at Taehyung, eyes questioning. "Why?" She asks, confusion clear in her eyes. "Why, Tae?""I need to rest, Mom," he says softly. "I'm very tired.""Why are you doing this?" Mrs. Kim ignores him. "Why are you pretending that you don't know Jungkook?""I don't know what you're talking about, Mom," he says, closing his eyes. "Tae, you are hurting yourself," Mrs. Kim continues. "You're hurting Jungkook, too. He's been hurting for a long time already. Why don't you let your love go on? Stop this nonsense, please.""Mom, you're confusing me," Taehyung speaks weakly. "I haven't been in love. What are you talking about?""You were crying when Jungkook was here just last week," Mrs. Kim explains. "Tae, please." "Ah, so that's Jungkook?" Taehyung asks, brows in a frown."Yes, he's your fiancé, Tae, come on!" Mrs. Kim says, frustration rising up."I have a fiancé?" Taehyung asks in shock."Tae..." Mrs. Kim gasps. "You really don't remember him?"Taehyung shakes his head."Then why were you crying the times when he was on the phone and when he was here last week?""My heart felt so sad when I saw him, when I heard his voice," Taehyung admits. "My heart aches right now just remembering him telling me things. I was not able to tell him to stop because I couldn't speak then. I wanted him to stop talking, to push him away. He was hurting me.""Tae..." Mrs. Kim engulfs him in her embrace."Come to think of it, my heart is so heavy since I woke up the first time," Taehyung says honestly. "I wanted to remember why I ended up like this, but I can't. I just wanted to die. I can't move, I can't talk. I feel trapped."His mother's phone rings just then. "It's Jungkook," she tells Taehyung."I need to rest," Taehyung says tiredly."Okay," Mrs. Kim says, patting his shoulder. "But I will have to answer this."Taehyung nods, closing his eyes.Mrs. Kim accepts the call. "Jungkook...""Mom? Is it true?" Jungkook asks excitedly. "Tae can speak now?""Yes," Mrs. Kim tells him the truth. "But...""Can I talk to him?" Jungkook questions eagerly, smiling so happy."He's resting," Mrs. Kim says, showing Taehyung, who has his eyes closed."Oh, it's okay," Jungkook is still smiling. "I'll just call later. Can you text me when he wakes up? You know I really miss him, Mom."Mrs. Kim sighs, and Jungkook didn't miss it."Is there something wrong, Mom?" He asks, starting to get nervous. "Is Tae okay? Is there any complication?""We actually have a problem. But I haven't talked to his doctor yet," Mrs. Kim says honestly."What is it, Mom?" Jungkook almost pleads. "Tell me please. I might be able to help.""Tae doesn't remember you," Mrs. Kim says. "He doesn't recall having a fiancé or falling in love.""Huh?" Jungkook can't process the information. "What do you mean?""Jungkook, I'm sorry," Mrs. Kim says, heart breaking again."You must be mistaken, Mom," Jungkook laughs, almost hysterical. "Is he mad at me? I understand if he is. Tae? Can he hear me, Mom? Tae?""I'll call you when he wakes up," Mrs. Kim says. "I'll talk to his doctor immediately. I honestly thought he was only pretending. I thought he wanted to free you.""Free me? Mom, why would you even think about that?" Jungkook demands. "He can't be that cruel.""We know Tae," Mrs. Kim sighs. "I just thought he's purposely not remembering you so you'll leave him alone. If you do, he won't be a burden to you. His recovery will not be easy, Jungkook. It might take years for him to be back to how he was, or he may not even be back to usual at all."Jungkook laughs. "You know me, too, Mom," he says confidently. "Even if Tae pushes me away, I'm not leaving him. Let's admit it, he's in this situation because of me. Even if you all refuse to blame me, it doesn't change the fact that it was me who caused this mess. I caused him to miss months of his life. So I'm never going to leave and forever make him feel that I appreciate what he did for me. He saved my life, Mom. Even if he never gets back to how he was before, I'd gladly take him."Mrs. Kim starts to cry. She's very grateful."And if it's true that he doesn't remember me now, I'll make him remember. I'll make him remember how we love each other," Jungkook says positively. "I should've stayed there."Taehyung stirs and opens his eyes, frowning at his mother, who is openly crying."Mom?" He asks."If he still wouldn't remember, then I'll make him fall in love with me all over again. I won't give up on Tae, Mom. He's the only one for me.""Mom, who is that? What is he saying?" Taehyung calls his mother, clutching the sides of his bed. He starts crying. "My chest hurts.""I have to go, Jungkook," Mrs. Kim panics. "I need to call the doctor.""Mom, wait!" Jungkook shouts. "Please leave your phone on and put it somewhere near Tae. I'd like to talk to him."Mrs. Kim hesitates. "Okay," he eventually agrees and places her phone on the side table."Hi, Tae, my baby bear. It's me, Jungkook," he says softly.Taehyung continues to cry."Hmmmm, maybe you forgot about me," Jungkook says patiently. "But I'm your fiancé.""I don't even have a boyfriend," Taehyung whispers. "Then would you like to have one?""No," Taehyung rejects the idea immediately."Why?" Jungkook asks curiously."I'm in no position to have one," Taehyung answers softly. "I'm...""You can tell me," Jungkook encourages him."I don't know you," Taehyung replies."I'm Jungkook, you know me now."Taehyung remains silent.Jungkook sighs. "Then let me sing for you," he offers. "You love it when I sing.""Do you have a nice voice?" Taehyung asks, and Jungkook feels his interest."You told me before that I have the best voice in Korea," he says proudly.Taehyung hums."You don't believe me?" Jungkook asks. "Then I'll prove it. I'm going to sing our favorite song. I dedicated it to you when we went to karaoke with your hyungs.""You know my hyungs?" Taehyung asks, surprised."Of course," Jungkook chuckles. "Seojoon Hyung, Wooshik Hyung, Hyungsik Hyung, and Sunghwan Hyung.""Oh," Taehyung frowns. "You really know me?""I do, I told you, I'm your fiancé," Jungkook says gently."I'm sorry," Taehyung apologizes. "I don't remember.""It's fine, you'll remember me soon, I hope," he sincerely wishes. "Can I sing now? You love my voice.""Okay," Taehyung feels eager to hear him.Jungkook clears his throat and then starts singing."We were so beautifulWe were so tragicNo other magic could ever compareThere's a roomIn my heart with the memories we madeTook 'em down, but they're still in their framesThere's no way I could ever forget, mmm..."Taehyung has no idea why he starts to cry again."For as long as I live and as long as I loveI will never not think about you You, mmmI will never not think about youFrom the moment I leftI knew you were the oneAnd no matter whatever I do, ooh, mmmI will never not think about youWhat we had only comesOnce in a lifetimeFor the rest of mine,I'll always compareTo the roomIn my heart with the memories we made…"Taehyung sobs."Hey, why are you crying?" Jungkook asks, worried. "You didn't like it? I'm sorry. I will not sing again.""It was beautiful," Taehyung responds in between sobs. "But it makes my heart ache.""I'm so sorry, baby," Jungkook apologizes, extremely bothered. "Please stop crying.""What happened?" The doctor asks as soon as he enters the room. "Are you hurt somewhere?"Taehyung looks helplessly at his mother. "My chest and head," he cries. "I don't understand...""I want you to breathe in and breathe out," the doctor commands. "Inhale, exhale..."Taehyung is slow to understand the instructions. He continues to sob."Son, breathe," Mrs. Kim holds his hands. "Breathe with me, come on, please. Look at me." She then cups his cheeks and breathes in the way she wants Taehyung to imitate. He eventually gets it and follows.A few minutes pass, and Taehyung calms down."Mom, I still don't know why I'm here. Can you tell me now?" Taehyung asks, wide-eyed."Mom," Jungkook calls out from the phone.Mrs. Kim jumps. She totally forgot about Jungkook when she saw Taehyung crying when they got in."I'm going there, Mom," Jungkook proceeds. "I think I should be the one to explain what happened.""I want answers now," Taehyung says weakly. "Mom, I want to go home.""We're in Hawaii, Tae," Mrs. Kim says carefully. "We're here for your wedding. Yours and Jungkook's."Taehyung furrows his brows. "So he's also here?""He went back home," Mrs. Kim explains. "He's needed there and took over as the CEO of Jeon Motors.""He's needed there," Taehyung nods, trying to understand. "I didn't need him here?""That's not..." Mrs. Kim wants to explain."I want to rest," Taehyung cuts his mother's supposed explanation then closes his eyes."Tae? Tae?" Jungkook calls his name. "Let me explain. That's not as simple as that. I didn't want to leave. Tae? Please listen.""Let's let him rest for now," the doctor interrupts."I'll come," Jungkook says hurriedly. "I'll tell Tae everything. Everything.""I don't need him," Taehyung says, eyes still closed. "I don't want him here.""Tae, he's your fiancé," Mrs. Kim insists. "You love each other.""I don't think so," Taehyung whispers."Tae, please," Jungkook's voice sounds desperate. "Just wait for me. I'll be there so I can explain to you all that happened. And I love you. So much.""Let's give him time," the doctor advises. "Everything might be confusing to him right now. Let's not push him. When he's stronger and ready, you can explain to him everything. When you feed him incomplete information, he might overthink and make his own conclusions like he just did now. It will not be good to all of you.""Is it possible for us to go home soon, doctor?" Mrs. Kim asks."If you ask me, it would be better if he goes home when he can at least sit down on his own," the doctor responds. "But you can bring him home in his condition right now. He is no longer in critical condition. Given his condition many months back, his recovery is quite fast.""What about his memory, doctor?" Mrs. Kim asks hesitantly, taking a glimpse of Taehyung, who has his eyes shut."We reviewed his scans, and there's no more swelling in or around his brain," the doctor explains. "But based on the initial findings from the past weeks, we're leaning towards dissociative disorder, more of a mental coping mechanism. It's localized since he can't remember Jungkook or anything from the time he met him until the time of the accident. So his mind is disconnected from everything that transpired from then. Periods of dissociation can last for days. In some cases, it can be longer, for weeks or months.""Can we do anything, doctor?" Jungkook asks. "Maybe we can do something for him to remember.""Well, the only thing we can do is help him reconnect with his recent past," he says."The people closest to him need to help him deal with the painful event but without pushing him or he might close off. The best way is to talk to him regularly about your shared memories in the past.""What about medication? Maybe you can prescribe him something?" Mrs. Kim asks."Mrs, Kim, unfortunately, there are no medications to specifically treat the disorder. But we can treat conditions that can occur along with it, such as depression or anxiety disorder, which I think is slowly creeping in. We've witnessed him crying even when he still can't talk. And you called me earlier because of the same reason. I'm afraid he's having difficulty processing his feelings. Especially now that he doesn't understand why he's here or what happened for him to end up here."Mrs. Kim nods. She doesn't understand why this is happening.___________________The Kims decided that it's best for Taehyung to stay in Hawaii under his doctor's care.Taehyung did not object. Jungkook did.Six months of physical therapy, and Taehyung can already sit on his own. He can finally move his upper body without strain to everyone's relief. As for his psychological and emotional therapy, not much has improved. The therapist concludes that Taehyung is limiting himself, closed off to looking back and remembering the past years.Jungkook visits once a month. But his frustration builds up every time he leaves. For a day or two, he stays with Taehyung. They talk about his recovery and other unimportant things. When Jungkook tries to talk about their relationship, what really happened or anything about their past, Taehyung refuses to listen and constantly excuses that he needs to rest.A month short to two years since the accident, Taehyung is going back home. Jungkook arrives with Mr. Kim, in his company jet, having convinced the Kims that it would be best for Taehyung to travel privately rather than take a commercial flight. Sunhee came a week ahead."Dad, do you think Tae will accept me again?" Jungkook asks as he drives to the hospital."Are you getting tired of waiting?" Mr. Kim asks back instead of answering his question."I'm getting frustrated," Jungkook admits. "I don't know how to proceed. I've tried everything.""It might get better when we get home," Mr. Kim says his thoughts. "You can visit him more often. He'll get familiar with you again. My wife actually told me that he talked to you more openly the last time you visited.""Well, because we talked about art," Jungkook chuckles. "He remembers working in a gallery. And I promised him I'll bring him back there when he's ready.""Did he say yes?" Mr. Kim asks, curious."He didn't commit," Jungkook shrugs. "I felt like he wanted to, but didn't say so.""He's probably insecure," Mr. Kim sighs. "And scared. His life is in total reset. And he'll be trapped in a wheelchair. It's not easy for him.""I understand, Dad," Jungkook exhales loudly. "I really want to take him home. In Seoul.""Eventually. But for now, it would be better if he stays with us in Daegu," Mr. Kim reminds him while stretching on his seat. "It would be best, actually. My wife would be there with him, though she'll slowly ease back to manage her foundation. And everything else is in place. The therapists, all will be meeting him a few days after we arrive home. Don't worry, we prepared his room but we didn't change anything. All your framed pictures together are still there. Those might help him remember.""I really hope so," Jungkook says positively. "Is Noona still mad at me?"Mr. Kim chuckles. "You know she loves you. She's actually worried that you'd get tired of the situation.""I will never, you all know that," Jungkook says firmly. "I asked because we've met in a few meetings, and she was all professional. I was afraid to approach her and piss her off. I said sorry once, she told me to forget about it and left. I don't know how to make her treat me the way she did before.""Just continue to love Tae better," Mr. Kim advises. "And everything will fall into place."They finally reach the hospital, and when they enter Taehyung's room, he is trying to move from the bed to his wheelchair. Jungkook rushes to help him, but before he can reach Taehyung, Sunhee grabs his wrist and shakes her head."Let him," she whispers. "He told us he wants to be independent as much as possible."Jungkook bites his lips. He badly wants to help Taehyung and do everything for him. But he will obey his wishes. He winces when Taehyung almost falls."Are you okay, son?" Mr. Kim was not able to control himself and asks.Taehyung looks up, slumping himself on the chair, breathing heavily."I'm okay now," he smiles at his father. "Hi, Dad!"His eyes travel to Jungkook, and he gives him a small smile."Are you ready to come home?" Jungkook asks, smiling back, walking closer to Taehyung."I guess so," he replies hesitantly. "Mom said you just arrived, are you tired? Would you like to rest first before we leave?"Jungkook's heart flutters. For the first time in almost two years, he feels like there is a chance for them again."I'll just rest during the flight back," he smiles at Taehyung brightly."Aaah, Taehyung!"They all look at the doctor. The therapists and other medical staff who cared for Taehyung are there to say goodbye. "We're here to see you off," the doctor says pleasantly."And I'd like you to have this," Taehyung's therapist hands him a ukulele.Taehyung giggles. "I don't know how to use it.""You said you want to learn to play an instrument," the therapist grins at him. "So we got you that small one to make you remember us.""I'll teach you," Jungkook volunteers. "Only if you want to.""You know how?" He asks, doubtful."Of course, and a few other instruments if you want to learn more.""Can you teach me on our way home?" He asks excitedly. "Oh, but you need to rest first.""I'll teach you anytime you want to," Jungkook assures him."Okay," he flashes his boxy smile to Jungkook and the latter melts in happiness. He then looks at all the hospital staff."Thank you so much for the gift," Taehyung bows his head. "Thank you for taking care of me. For being patient with me.""If you want to come to Korea, we'd gladly host you," Jungkook offers. "Just contact us, and we will welcome you there."They say their goodbyes, and before they leave, Jungkook gets closer to Taehyung."Can I assist you today?" He asks hesitantly."I don't want to be a bother," Taehyung responds immediately."I insist, please let me," Jungkook almost begs. "I'm here for you.""If you're sure...""I'm sure."The Kims smile reassuringly at one another, witnessing the interaction. Even the doctors look pleased with Taehyung's reaction.Taehyung waves at the people they will leave behind as Jungkook pushes his chair out of the hospital."Please wait for me here," Jungkook tells them when they step out of the hospital. "Let me get the vehicle."He leaves immediately, and Taehyung reaches out for his mother."Mom? Can you hold my hand, please?" He asks, shaking a little."Are you okay?" Mrs. Kim worries. She holds Taehyung's hand. And Taehyung grabs her tightly."I'm nervous," he says, confused."It's going to be okay," Mr. Kim holds his other hand, looking worriedly at Mrs. Kim."We're all here for you, Tae," Sunhee assures him."Being outside is overwhelming," he reasons. "But I'll be fine."He breathes in and out, trying to relax himself as he learned in one of his sessions with the therapist. The SUV stops in front of them a couple of minutes later. Jungkook jumps out and walks to them."Is it okay if I carry you to inside the car?" He asks."I think I should try if I can do it first," Taehyung responds, doubtful of himself as well."Tae, it's best if you let Jungkook carry you." advises Sunhee. "We will have a long flight that will tire all of us and you don't want to be tired as early as now. Please?""Noona, I don't want to be a bother," Taehyung whines. "He's been too kind and I can't grasp why he has to do that, but I don't want to overstep."Jungkook kneels in front of him. "Tae, I'm doing things for you because I want to. Believe me it's nothing compared to all your sacrifices for me. Just please let me help you. But I won't push you if you really don't want to. I respect and value your decisions.""Why?" Taehyung whisper asks."Because I love you," Jungkook whispers back.Taehyung's eyes widen, swallowing nothing, heart beating fast. "I," he hesitates. "I'm sorry."Jungkook nods. "I understand. I'm not asking you to return my feelings. I just want to help you the best I can. I hope you let me."Taehyung stares at Jungkook for a couple of seconds, feeling his heart constricting tightly. "Okay," he agrees.Jungkook sighs in relief and scoops Taehyung out of the wheelchair. He carefully climbs up the vehicle and gently places him on the seat at the back of the driver."Thank you," Taehyung says softly, arms still around Jungkook's neck. They stare at each other for a moment."This feels familiar. Like it already happened before," Taehyung says, starting to get confused again.Mrs. Kim steps in the vehicle as well and tries to explain. "Maybe because you're used to embracing Jungkook. Your mind can't remember but your senses can," she smiles."Is it true?" Taehyung looks at Jungkook, retracting his hands to himself."Well, you're like a koala, if you ask me," he grins and Taehyung giggles. "Oh, God, those giggles make me the happiest man right now," Jungkook breathes out, tucking Taehyung's stray hair to his ear.Taehyung blushes profusely. He feels happy, too."Let's go?" Sunhee states from the entrance of the SUV. "The hospital staff are watching us. We better leave so they can go back to work."And true enough, they're all at the lobby, looking out at them, smiling and waving.Jungkook moves to step out of the vehicle so he can start it. But he's surprised when he feels a hand around his wrist."Can you sit beside me?" Taehyung asks. "I'm nervous about this drive. You on the wheel makes me even more anxious.""Jungkook drove the two of us earlier," Mr. Kim mentions. "He's a good driver.""I don't know," Taehyung nervously shrugs, unsure. "If you say so.""I'll drive," Sunhee asserts. To his father, she whispers. "It might have something to do with his subconscious, afraid for an accident to happen.""Are you sure you want to drive?” Mrs. Kim asks, concerned."Yeah," Sunhee smiles knowingly at her mother. "I'll drive slowly. And carefully.""Right, so Tae can appreciate the view," Mr. Kim adds positively."I'd like that," Taehyung smiles in appreciation. Not a minute later, they make their final wave to the people in the hospital.Sunhee drives slow enough as promised. They're all quiet, all their attention directed to Taehyung who is taking in their surroundings.Twenty minutes on the road and Taehyung speaks."Can we stop?" He asks hesitantly."Are you okay? Do you need anything?" Mrs. Kim is worried."I want to feel the sand under my feet," Taehyung says, gazing longingly at the beach."Tae, it's...""I'll take him," Jungkook cuts Mrs. Kim. "I'll take him to the shore.""Do we have time?" Sunhee asks."I'll just call the pilot and he'll coordinate with the controller," Jungkook assures them. "Let me do it now."Jungkook makes a quick call and Taehyung grins in excitement.Sunhee finds a clearance and parks there."Are you coming with us?" Taehyung asks as he removes his seatbelt."We'll stay here," Mr. Kim smiles back at Taehyung. "Just enjoy the beach."Jungkook removes Taehyung's shoes and his own then scoops him off his seat."We won't take long," Taehyung promises as he places his arms around Jungkook's shoulder."Take your time," Mr. Kim encourages. "We're not in a rush.""Okay," Taehyung grins.Jungkook steps out of the vehicle and carefully walks to the shore, carrying Taehyung bridal style. When they are out of earshot, Sunhee speaks. "I don't know what to feel about those two," she sighs while all of their eyes follow the two's movements. "I'm happy and scared.""Why would you be scared?" Mr. Kim asks, now looking closely at Sunhee. "We must be happy that Tae is slowly accepting Jungkook in his life again.""What if Jungkook neglects Tae?" Sunhee asks. "We all know that his visits were very few in the two years that Tae was here. And Tae is being too dependent on him for my liking.""Don't blame Jungkook for not being here for Tae as often as you expected to," Taehyung's mother defends him. "It was my doing.""What?" Sunhee is totally shocked. "What do you mean, Mom? It was him who was in Seoul, or somewhere else in the world, prioritizing his work. If he really wanted to be with Tae, he should've been by his side the whole time.""Because I asked his parents to make his schedule full, so he can't come here," Mrs. Kim confesses. "I begged them to keep Jungkook away.""Huh? Why would you that?" Mr. Kim asks."I am Taehyung's mother," she starts to cry. "I saw my son almost dead in a hospital bed. What would I do? I tried so hard to understand. But at the end of the day, Tae ended up hurt because of Jungkook. I know it was Tae's choice. He loved Jungkook too much to protect him. But I'm not as kind-hearted. I can't be with Jungkook alone, him who recovered well and got stronger every day, while my own son's condition was not improving. His recovery reminded me every waking minute what Tae was missing. I was so hurt that every time Jungkook whispers his apologies to Tae, I wanted to shout that his apologies would not make Taehyung wake up or get better. So I wanted him gone. And it was the time when their company needed him badly. His mother told me that the board of directors were losing faith in Jungkook. But they did not want to force their son to leave Tae. I convinced them that I'd take care of Tae and that Jungkook being away will help him, too. I was not lying when I told them that Jungkook needs to go on with his life, to take the offer, because what if he ends up losing the job, then Tae never recovers, he would lose himself, too. I convinced myself that I'm doing it for Jungkook. I told his mother that working a lot will take his mind off Tae, that having no chance to come here will do Jungkook good.""Oh, honey," Mr. Kim embraces his wife tightly."I was so wrong," Mrs. Kim sobs. "Because no matter how hectic they made Jungkook's schedule, he always wanted Tae. He called every single day, which I declined most of the time. Tae was in coma and it was me who always ended up hearing him cry. I told him to lessen the call, that I'd just call him if there's news about Tae. But he still called. He found ways to visit for a day or two even if his commitments were too much for him. He made time for Tae but I was so selfish to break his heart even more by keeping him away. I was so shattered when I learned that he got drunk and did not keep his word hours before the wedding. Whose mother would think that their son deserved that?""Mom, you should've told us at least," Sunhee cries, too. "We could've talked about it. We could've shared your pain.""I didn't want to add to your pain," Mrs. Kim responds, smiling despite the tears. "You already lashed out at Jungkook. And we all saw how it pained him. Deep inside, you know I love him. But I was not able to control my feelings - the hurt, the need to have someone to blame. It was so easy to pin all my frustrations on him because the circumstances presented itself. Among us, your Dad was the only one who kept his faith in Jungkook, in their love. And I am so thankful right now that at least one of us was sane enough to think straight. Because look at them."The two turn to where Jungkook and Taehyung are. Even quite far, they can all see Taehyung's boxy grin."My heart aches seeing him smiling like that because of Jungkook. It reminds me of how selfish I was, how shallow my reasoning was. I did them bad.""Now, there's only one thing you can do to redeem yourself," Mr. Kim says encouragingly."Apologize to them?" Mrs. Kim asks, eyes fearful with the just the thought of it."I don't think apologising to them now will do any good," Mr. Kim shares his thoughts. "It would confuse Tae, and it will shatter Jungkook. We don't want that now.""Then what does she need to do?" Sunhee questions."Your Mom, and all of us, for that matter, needs to protect their love," Mr. Kim looks at the two by the shore. "They deserve to be happy. Jungkook assured me earlier that he'll have more time with Tae since they'd be in just one country. He said he has more control over the company now, now that he's proven that he can manage it properly. He wants to be with Tae as much as he can. I hope Tae remembers him soon."They all look hopefully at the two. Taehyung waves at them, and they wave back."They really don't want to come with us here," Taehyung comments. "I plan to be here for a few minutes. Can you put me down?""Are you sure?" Jungkook asks worriedly. "Can you stand?"Taehyung bites his lower lip. "I can already stand for a short period of time. And I'd need to lean heavily on you if I want to remain standing for longer," he says matter of factly. "At least you can rest your arms from carrying me, right?""Right," Jungkook chuckles.Jungkook puts him down carefully. And as soon as Taehyung is on the sand, he grabs Jungkook's arm with both hands, balancing himself."I'd hold your waist to support you," Jungkook states as he does so.Taehyung sighs. "Thanks," he mutters. "I hope to do things on my own soon.""You will, soon," Jungkook whispers against his temple. "You've recovered a lot, see now you can stand. And while you're not fully recovered yet, I'm here to support you.""You've done more than enough," Taehyung glances at him. "And you can't be with me every second of the day.”"I can if you want to," Jungkook challenges Taehyung. "I'd drop everything for you in a heartbeat.""Is this because of what happened?" Taehyung asks, looking far beyond the horizon. "You feel guilty somehow? Don't be. It's an accident."Jungkook gasps. "You remember now?"Taehyung looks at him and smiles. "I wish," he says, teary eyed. "I wish I remember everything so I no longer have questions.""But you just mentioned the accident," Jungkook frowns."I didn't lose my sense of hearing, Jungkook," he smiles again, wiping his tears."When I first gained consciousness, I was so confused. I was lying there, didn't even know where I was or what happened. I wanted to move, to say something. I was not able to. But I heard everything."He blows air to calm himself a bit."Tae, you don't need to talk about it." Jungkook is worried that it might trigger something."But I need to tell you," Taehyung looks at him, eyes pleading. "I need to get this off my chest. I discussed this with my therapist but I didn't feel relieved after. I have a feeling that after telling you, I'd be okay.""Okay," Jungkook readily agrees. "But would you like to sit there so you'll be more comfortable?" Jungkook points to a driftwood not too far away from them. "You can still feel the sand under your feet, and maybe in a little while, the water, too.""Yeah, I'd like that."Jungkook scoops him up again ang walks to the drift wood."Just let me stand and I can sit on my own," Taehyung tells him when they reach the area.Jungkook obeys, still supporting most of Taehyung's weight. He can't let him fall and get hurt."Let me tell them that we'll stay here until sunset," Jungkook fishes out his phone and calls Taehyung's father."Dad, you can go straight to the airport. We'll be here for an hour or two more," Jungkook informs them. "Tae wants to see the sunset. But you're welcome to stay here with us if you want.""We'll go to the airport," Mr. Kim is quick to answer. "Just call us and we'll have you picked up when you're ready. Can I speak to Tae?""Of course," Jungkook hands the phone to Taehyung."Dad?""Will you be okay, son?" he asks, not exactly worried, just wanting to know how Taehyung feels."I feel good, Dad," he sounds cheerful. "I actually love the calming feeling of the beach. And I feel comfortable with Jungkook here with me."Jungkook wants to cry hearing those words from Taehyung."Okay, enjoy your time," Mr. Kim smiles to the others in the vehicle."We love you, Tae.""I know," Taehyung giggles. "I love you, too!"Mr. Kim cuts the call and Taehyung hands over the phone back to Jungkook."We can talk about other things if you want to," Taehyung suggests. "My ramblings might bore you.""No, no. Of course not," Jungkook assures him. "We can talk about anything you want. But if it's getting heavy for you, you know you can always stop, yeah?"Taehyung nods, hands tracing the marks on the driftwood."I heard everything," Taehyung looks at the ocean again. "My Mom, the doctors, you.""Can I hold your hand, Tae?" Jungkook asks. He wants to embrace Taehyung but it might be too much.Taehyung looks at his hand nearer to Jungkook and nods. It feels easy for him to get close to Jungkook.Jungkook immediately entwines their fingers, then wraps it with the other."Can I ask you questions?" Taehyung eyes their hands that fit perfectly. "I want to learn things about us.""You can ask me anything," Jungkook guarantees. "I'll answer honestly."Taehyung nods slowly. "Aside from the things I've heard, not all so pleasant, by the way," Taehyung stops with the memory, "Mom gave me my phone after the last time you visited. She told me it might help me remember you and what we've had before.""Did it help?" Jungkook asks, hopeful."Somehow," Taehyung answers truthfully. "I saw our messages to each other. I had a glimpse of how we were to each other. There were a lot of pictures, some not really safe for others to see." He blushes profusely when particular pictures come to mind."You must be shocked and uncomfortable seeing some of them," Jungkook winces, knowing all of those. "Wait! Did Mom see them? Oh my God!"Taehyung laughs. "Don't worry she didn't. She just charged the phone but was not able to open it. She had no idea how to unlock it.""Then you remembered your unlock pattern?" Jungkook quizzes."Probably muscle memory," Taehyung shrugs. "My hand automatically unlocked the phone before I can even think about how to unlock it."They grin at each other. "I read all your messages, all nine hundred seventy six of them," Taehyung smiles gratefully. "Including the one you sent earlier today."Jungkook bites his inner cheek."I also listened to all the voicemails," Taehyung continues. "They made me cry. You suffered a lot, Jungkook. I'm sorry.""Oh, God, Tae! You have nothing to be sorry about!" Jungkook sobs. "Don't say that. Between the two of us, you suffered more. You're still suffering now.""That's what I thought before I read your messages and listened to your voicemails," Taehyung draws circles on the sand with his other hand that is not in Jungkook's hold. "I didn't want you back in my life. I think it's quite obvious with the way I treated you before. I just wanted you to leave me alone. I felt like you were back in Seoul doing what you want, continuing your life as you should while I was bound in a hospital bed, confused and feeling abandoned. You know what I thought? Why did I even saved you when you didn't care about me?"Taehyung chuckles dryly."I really didn't understand why I had to pick you up from drinking with your friends, the morning of our wedding day. How did I love someone who didn't treat me like I would treat him?""I'm sorry, Tae," Jungkook cries hard and Taehyung hugs him. "It was a lapse in judgment. I have no excuse.""But you have," Taehyung says and he starts to cry as well. "I read our messages from before the accident. It's the first time you're seeing your friends in months. They always asked you out but I always acted like a brat. I wanted you to myself. I wanted you to focus on me. Only me.""I chose to focus on you," Jungkook explains. "It's not an excuse. It's our wedding day.""With how possessive I was of you, I was surprised you still wanted to marry me," Taehyung chuckles while his tears flow. "I was not a good fiancé. I was suffocating. Why did you want to marry someone like me?""Because I love you," Jungkook says passionately. "I still do. You listened to my messages. I can't live without you, Tae. The possessiveness you're saying? I didn't take it negatively. I took it as a sign that you want me bad. When you didn't act like one, I become insecure, like you're losing interest in me. So don't think like that, please. We've been through these issues before and we've already resolved them.""I don't know, Jungkook," Taehyung hesitates. "I feel like I'm underserving of your love. And I still don't remember everything, Jungkook. What I have right now, all of them are from the memory of my phone, not from my own. Are you okay with that?""I'll take anything, Tae," Jungkook pulls back to look at him. “I’m not leaving you. I'll be waiting until you remember everything.""What if I don't?" Taehyung asks, heart constricting in his chest."That's why I'm here," Jungkook cups Taehyung's cheeks. "I'll make you fall in love with me again. I will fill your mind with new memories.""Do you think it will work?" Taehyung asks, eyes big in question."We will make it work," Jungkook assures him. "I'm right here. If you have doubts or any thoughts about us, just tell me. If you want out, just let me know. I will accept and let you go. I love you like that.""Did I love you enough?" Taehyung asks, overwhelmed by Jungkook's words. "For you to love me like this?""You loved me more than any person could wish for," Jungkook's voice comes shakily. "Your unselfish love is why you're suffering. You saved me, Tae. You made sure I'm okay. You sacrificed yourself just for me to be safe. How can your love not be enough? It's so much more.""I don't know," Taehyung shrugs. "Was it not just, maybe a mistake on my part? Maybe I was trying to avoid the truck and accidentally covered you.""Tae, please," he begs. "Don't downplay what you did for me. Wouldn't I know that you really loved me? You said that you read all our messages, didn't you see how you took care of me in the past years?""I don't want you to regret staying with me," Taehyung says honestly. "You can choose to leave. My recovery will take long. Physical, I think for a number of months. Mentally, I might not recover at all. Would you like to be with someone broken?""I'd take you in any shape or form, Tae," Jungkook swears. "I told you, there's no one else for me. Let's do this together. I'm not giving up on you. Don't give up on us, please."Taehyung remains quiet, looking at the sky that's slowly changing its color."If you don't want me anymore, I'd be happy to give you space," Jungkook breathes out. "But you can never stop me from loving you. Even from afar.""Why does it hurt so much hearing that?" Taehyung whispers, clutching his chest. He starts to tear up again. "My heart is scaring me. It clenches so hard with every thought of letting you go."Jungkook reaches out to dry Taehyung's tears. "Maybe because your heart remembers.""Does it? But the best thing I can do for you, given the circumstances, is to let you be with someone without complications," he smiles, tears still flowing. "You're such a perfect person, Jungkook. You deserve someone who remembers you, who loves you fully, without doubts.""Listen to me," Jungkook doesn't know how to make Taehyung believe him. He places Taehyung's hand on his chest. "Can you feel it?" He asks without waiting for an answer. "This only beats for you. Even if you let me go, it will only be yours. No one else can take your place. And based on what you just said a while ago, I'm still in yours. So can we not make it difficult for the both of us? Can we both listen to what our hearts are telling us?""What if you wake up one day, sick and tired of me and my situation?" Taehyung asks with fear in his eyes. "I'm so scared to let you in because I'm afraid to lose you when that time comes.""Just trust me, Tae," Jungkook tries to be strong. "Believe that you have me always. All of me."Taehyung stares at the sky. They both look at the orange glow of the sunset quietly.Jungkook pulls out his phone from his pocket and takes a picture."We love the sunset," Jungkook starts again. "We scheduled our wedding late in the afternoon so we can have beautiful pictures with those vivid colors.""Would you like to take one of us now?" Taehyung suggests.Jungkook nods as he takes a couple of pictures of the two of them, with the sunset as their background. They look at them together."Can you send me a copy of those?" Taehyung requests. "I like them, a little against the light, but I'd want to keep them. We look good."Jungkook is afraid that Taehyung wants the pictures as remembrance of their last moments together. But he still promises to send them since he has no reason not to."Jungkook," Taehyung starts."Bun," Jungkook cuts him, staring at his face. "You used to call me Bun."Taehyung looks at him and giggles. "I can see why." He looks at the sea again."You're about to say something," Jungkook reminds him."Well, I wanted to say that I don't want to let you go," Taehyung weighs his words carefully. "I feel that I'm making a big mistake if I do."Jungkook looks at him, unbelieving. "Tae," he says. He wants to say more, that he will never regret his decision. But Taehyung speaks again."I can feel in my heart that you are important to me," Taehyung faces him. "But can you give me time?""What do you mean?""I need to settle things with myself," Taehyung tries to explain. "And with my family." He says softly.Jungkook is confused. But he relents. "I can give you that," he nods, convincing himself that what Taehyung is offering is better than flatly rejecting him. "But can I visit? Or see you when I miss you?"Taehyung is quiet for a while. "I'll focus on my therapy when I get back home. I want to be on my feet as soon as possible. I want to find a job so I can live independently.""We have a place in Seoul, Tae," Jungkook reminds him. "Although we were supposed to move to our new house after our wedding. We both wanted to adopt dogs, and our new place is perfect for our little family. But I haven't moved in since we planned that we'll move in together. So I'm still staying in our apartment.""I'm not sure, Jungkook," Taehyung says honestly. "Things aren't the same as before. But I'd want to visit the apartment that we were sharing. I'm curious how I lived my life with you.""Would you like us to go straight there?" Jungkook asks hopefully. "I'll take care of you.""I'll tell you when I'm ready," Taehyung says sincerely. "I prefer to walk in there and not to be carried inside. And maybe when I'm a lot better, you can visit Daegu. I don't want to impose. I don't want your schedule to revolve around mine. Just do your thing.""I won't be able to visit?" Jungkook asks incredulously. "Tae, it's like you're near yet so far. I can actually go there daily. Why would you not want to see me? You just told me you're not letting me go. I don't understand.""Just trust in me for now," Taehyung bites his lip. "We can video call. I can give you my therapy schedule once I have them. You can call me every night. Just contact me directly.""Why?" Jungkook's confusion is growing. "Is there something wrong? Why would you prefer calls when I can visit you in person?""I have my reasons.""You can't tell me what those are?" Jungkook asks, taking a chance."I'm sorry," Taehyung says softly, hugging himself. "I'd rather keep them to myself.""You're cold," Jungkook notices him rubbing his arms. "We better go. I'll just make a call."He doesn't call Mr. Kim. He knows he is tired from their travel. Instead, he calls one of the staff in the jet to arrange a pick-up."It will take around thirty minutes for our vehicle to arrive," he informs Taehyung after he cuts the call. Taehyung is shivering when he fully focuses his attention on him."Are you okay?" He asks, worried."It's s-suddenly chilly," Taehyung says, stuttering a little."Come here," Jungkook lifts Taehyung and puts him on his lap, hugging him close, resting his chin on the other's shoulder, nuzzling his neck. "Do you feel better, now?"Taehyung hums in agreement. "You're hot," then realizes it might have meant something else, "I mean, I feel a lot warmer than earlier.""So I'm not hot?" Jungkook teases, finding it cute that Taehyung is explaining himself with a blush on his cheeks."You know you are.""Hmmm., Jungkook hums and shifts Taehyung on his lap but the latter immediately shrieks."What?" Jungkook asks in panic."Something sharp poked my butt," he complains with a wince on his face. "I was surprised and it's quite painful.""Oh, I'm sorry!" Jungkook apologizes. He is quick to shift Taehyung on his lap again. "I'm really sorry," he starts to explain. "It's just that I've been carrying it for a long time that I forgot that I have it in my pocket."He stretches his right leg and fished out a box in his pocket. "I need these always," Jungkook whispers as he opens the box to show the contents to Taehyung."These must be..." Taehyung admires them."Our wedding rings," Jungkook continues as he observes Taehyung's eyes widen."They're beautiful," he touches the rings. "Exactly how I'd want them to be.""You're the one who designed them," Jungkook chuckles. "The jeweller almost quit because of how demanding you were.""Really?" Taehyung looks at Jungkook, unbelieving. "You can be very stubborn, you know?" Jungkook boops his nose playfully."It must be hard to deal with me.""I wasn't hard for me," Jungkook assures him. "Because I always say yes to you and give you everything you want."Taehyung runs his fingers on the intricate designs of the rings. "Then can I have them?" He asks carefully, his focus still on the bands inside the box.Jungkook hesitates. "You just said that you used to give me everything I wanted," Taehyung teases him. "But now, it seems that you're unsure what to do.""I'd give them to you, of course," Jungkook easily relents. "I just felt like my life would be more empty without them. You see, I've been holding on to them since...""I understand," Taehyung interrupts him when he notices he's about to cry. "What about we wear them already? In that case, we'll have one each.""Are you sure?" Jungkook asks, not certain what to do. "They're our wedding rings.""So? Maybe we can design another set if we still want to get married in the future," Taehyung shrugs."I do!" Jungkook rushes his words out. "Of course, I'd still want to marry you. But you...I wish you could love me again. I don't want nobody else."Taehyung cups his face. "Jeon Jungkook, I want a ring on my finger to remind myself that you're waiting for me," he wipes a tear that escapes Jungkook's eye. "All my belongings were boxed and brought home to Daegu by Noona months after the accident. Everything. Well almost all of them, except my phone. I believe there's an engagement ring and a few necklaces. But since I was subjected to tests often and was not able to wear them, my family decided to just send them home to make sure they're safe.""We have identical engagement rings, look," Jungkook raises his hand and shows him a white gold band with a single diamond embedded in it. "We chose them separately but ended up getting the same ones. Our families were laughing at us then, said that we were one soul in two bodies."Taehyung examines it. "It's beautiful," he finally says. "I know I'll find mine when I get home. But I'd still want that ring on my finger." He gestures at the box still on Jungkook's palm. "I'd also want you to wear what's supposed to be yours," Taehyung continues. "So that every time you see it, you'll be reminded of me. And my promise that one day, I'll be back in your life and you'll be back in mine. I need time to figure out things on my own. But that ring will remind you that I've committed to give us a chance; that I'm thankful you're willing to wait for me to fully heal and be whole again."Jungkook sobs, nods his head in agreement. He knows he can longer change Taehyung's mind about seeing him in person. So he picks up the rings from the box and gives the one he's supposed to wear to Taehyung. "Please put it on my finger as I put this one around yours," he requests.Under the early night sky and with the sound of the ocean surrounding them, they exchange the rings with silent vows. Taehyung is thankful for Jungkook's devotion and willingness to wait; Jungkook is hopeful that their time to be together will not be too far away in the future.___________________"Are you sure you're not coming home with us?" Mr. Kim asks Jungkook as they say goodbye inside the private jet a few minutes after they landed in Daegu.Jungkook looks at Taehyung, then smiles at the Kims. "I have some appointments in Seoul," he says apologetically."You can visit Tae anytime," Mr. Kim pats his shoulder.Jungkook simply nods and watches them disembark. Taehyung looks back once, smiling faintly at him. "God, it's so hard to see him go," Jungkook whispers to himself as he looks at Taehyung being wheeled away from him."Sir, we have a clearance to take off," the co-pilot says respectfully as the Kims disappear into the arrivals terminal. "Can we go?""Of course, I don't have any room here in Daegu anymore," Jungkook walks back to his seat. "Let's fly to Seoul. I'll just go to the office."The Kims are silent as they settle in their SUV.Sunhee sighs before breaking the silence. "I'm sure Jungkook is really busy," she says to everyone. "He would've been here if there are no pressing matters he needs to attend to."They steal glances at Taehyung who is busy looking at the road ahead."I'm sure he will visit soon," Mr. Kim says positively. "Maybe even this weekend."Mrs. Kim holds her son's hand. "Tae, are you okay?" She asks tentatively. "I'm sure Jungkook will...""I told him not to see me," Taehyung says casually."What? Why?" Sunhee is the first to react.Taehyung simply shrugs, eyes still fixed on the road, not sparing a glance to any of his family members."Don't you think it's too harsh?" Sunhee continues. "He took his time to bring you back here. He let us use his resources...""Sunhee," Mrs. Kim stops her daughter. All of them observe Taehyung with concern. "I don't understand," Sunhee says in a soft voice. "Everything was fine even when we were in the jet," she frowns, looking so confused. "Jungkook was showing Tae their pictures from his phone. He even taught Tae the basics on how to play the ukulele. What happened? Tae?"Taehyung remains mum, like he didn't hear a thing."Tae, talk to us," Sunhee almost begs. "Don't you think you're being unfair to him?"Still no response from Taehyung."Tae," Mrs. Kim says gently. "We're here if you want to talk. We're your family. We're here always. We will never leave you."Mr. Kim frowns at his wife. "The Jeons are your family, too," he says carefully. "And Jungkook wants nothing else but to be with you. I hope you let him."Taehyung bites his lip. "I'm tired," Taehyung whispers, not trusting himself to speak. "I just want to go home."If he's being honest, he'd want to keep Jungkook by his side. He feels safe and cared for with him. But he won't until he can at least stand on his own two feet and be independent again.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

"Your parents visited earlier today," Taehyung informs Jungkook. They're talking via video call, late night a week after he came back to Daegu."But it was like ten minutes only 'cause I needed to start my physical therapy.""I should've been there, too," Jungkook whines. "I wish I'm allowed to visit you, too."Taehyung sighs. "We talk for a few minutes every night. We get to know each other more. I'm sorry, but that's the only thing I can commit right now.""I understand, I won't push you. And I will not ask for your reasons," Jungkook smiles. "I actually look forward to our late night calls. I'm glad you're still the last person I get to see before I sleep at night. And our morning messages fuel me through the day.""You're a romantic, Jungkook," Taehyung giggles. "I must admit that I'm also happy to talk to you. Everyone seems to be very careful when they talk to me. Even my hyungs, they visited over the weekend. I'm so comfortable talking to you.""Hmmm, you know you're making me very happy with what you're saying," Jungkook grins at him. "How was your therapy today?""I can stand without help for a longer period of time, without any pain," Taehyung explains. "But like I told you last night, there's not much progress, and I'm getting really frustrated.""Don't be," Jungkook encourages. "You being able to stand longer than before is progress.""I guess," Taehyung reluctantly agrees. "I can't wait to walk again and visit the gallery you told me about. The one you said I worked before?""You can still work there, Tae," Jungkook reminds him. "Technically, you still work there. They haven't replaced you.""I wonder why.""You're too talented for them to let go. And you're well known, you're aware of that. So they hire people per project basis while you're away.""I remember working in a gallery," Taehyung confesses. "But it's hazy. I can't recall everything," he pouts and Jungkook is endeared."By the way, I started painting again," he informs Jungkook giddily. "Just this afternoon. I feel inspired.""And what are you painting?" Jungkook inquires, really invested in Taehyung's activities."It's a secret for now," Taehyung says, teasing. "I just thought of it. I hope it turns out really beautiful. Like how I'm picturing it in my head.""I'm sure it will be breathtaking," Jungkook compliments him. "Another masterpiece of the artist Vante."He is about to thank Jungkook when he hears a knock on the door. "I have to go," he whispers."Why?" Jungkook asks, frowning. They usually talk for about thirty minutes every night. It's only been less than ten minutes."Someone's at the door," Taehyung says hurriedly. "I'll text you in the morning. Sweet night, Jungkookie.""Good night, Tae. I will wait for your text." Jungkook doesn't understand why Taehyung hides the fact that they're talking, every night at that. But he doesn't want to ask, the other might decide not to talk to him at all. So he simply accepts what Taehyung is willing to give him. He is still thankful for it.He can still see Taehyung on the screen, looking directly at him. "Oh and Tae, I love you. Always remember that," he says, almost breathless.Taehyung smiles and touches the screen. "See you again tomorrow, I will call," he promises. He cuts the call, both of them smiling.Taehyung hears another knock then. A few seconds later, his mother comes in with a tray of snacks - some crackers and a few fruits."You don't have to do this, Mom," Taehyung says immediately. "I will be sleeping in a moment.""You might get hungry in the middle of the night," Mrs. Kim makes room for the tray on Taehyung's bedside table. "I'm also here to check if you already took your meds.""I already did," Taehyung slides down to a more comfortable position. "Thanks, Mom.""Uhm, you were talking to someone before I came in?" She tentatively asks. "I think I heard Jungkook's voice before I came in."Taehyung looks at his mother's eyes for a moment, as if looking for answers there. "I was listening to an audio book," he shows her the screen of his phone. An app is open to a story. "I will use headphones next time.""No, it's okay," Mrs. Kim is quick to tell him. "It's not too loud. I was just at the door, so I heard it. And I honestly thought you were talking to Jungkook. I thought I heard you talking, too.""I was," he admits to it. "I was talking. I was commenting loudly on the story. Don't worry, Mom. I'm not talking to Jungkook or anyone else.""Huh?" Mrs. Kim was taken aback. "Why would I be worried that you're talking to Jungkook?""I don't know," Taehyung whispers, then closes his eyes."Tae," Mrs. Kim touches his arm. "Talk to me, son.""What do you want to talk about?" Taehyung asks without opening his eyes. "I'm quite sleepy already.""Open your eyes for a while," Mrs. Kim says carefully. "I need to know why you think I'd feel that way."Taehyung slowly opens his eyes. "I don't know," he responds, yawning"Tae, be honest with me, please," Mrs. Kim almost begs. "Tell me what's on your mind.""Nothing really," Taehyung responds lightly. "I just thought you're worrying too much about me. I'm okay now. Slowly, I'm getting stronger, and soon, I'll be back to my healthy self."Mrs. Kim wants to probe more. She can feel that there's something wrong. "Son, just know that you can talk to me," she reminds him. "Or talk to your Noona. Even to your Dad. If something's bothering you, let us know. At least one of us. Please?"Taehyung nods. "Can I sleep now? My therapy is very early tomorrow. I need to rest so I can be back in shape the soonest.""Okay," Mrs. Kim agrees reluctantly. "Just call me when you need anything.""I won't need anything, Mom," Taehyung says tiredly. "I will just be sleeping. What will I need while asleep? Please stop treating me like I'm going to break or something, like you're in a perpetual pity party because of what happened to me.""Kim Taehyung!" His mother exclaims with a gasp."I'm just so tired, Mom," Taehyung says in frustration. "You can all act normal around me. You don't need to always be careful when you talk to me. I can't remember a lot of things from the past years, but I'm still me. I'm still the same Taehyung."He wipes a few tears that fall on his cheeks. "I understand that you're devastated and frustrated, too," he continues. "But it's now time that you treat me like the way you did before. I'm stronger than you think. I can get through this, and you can help me by being the first ones to treat me like the normal person that I am."Mrs. Kim starts to cry. "We're just thinking about your well-being. We're being gentle because we don't want to overwhelm you. We want you to recover and not think about anything but getting better," she explains."I'm sorry," Taehyung shakes his head, surprised at his own outburst. "I'm sorry, Mom, I meant no disrespect. I'm just...""I understand," Mrs. Kim interrupts him. "You've been through a lot.""But you suffered more than I did," Taehyung chokes on a sob. "I was in a coma while you were there not knowing if I'd make it or not. It was not easy for you, too. I'm sorry for being insensitive.""It's okay," Mrs. Kim assures him. "After all you've been through, you have a free pass to be frustrated. And don't worry, we'll do our best to not be too careful around you.""Thanks, Mom," Taehyung moves to hug her. "Not only for understanding, but for everything. You never left my side. I'll always be thankful.""I left once. I came home for a few weeks," Mrs. Kim informs Taehyung."You did?" Taehyung is shocked. "Noona stayed with me?""Jungkook," Mrs. Kim smiles at him. "As soon as he got better, he insisted on taking care of you alone. He didn't want to leave, but he had to, for his family's business."It's a surprise for Taehyung. All the while, he thought his mother never left his side and was the only one who stayed beside him all throughout that episode in his life."Jungkook loves you, Tae," she mutters."But you love me more, right? You're my Mom after all." Mrs. Kim frowns again. "What do you even mean by that?" She can sense a hidden meaning to what his son said. "Of course I love you, and I always will. But Jungkook,""Let's not talk about him anymore," he stops his mother. "It's quite late, Mom. I really need to rest now." He makes himself comfortable in his bed again."Okay," Mrs. Kim nods in agreement and kisses him on the forehead. "Goodnight, Tae.""Goodnight, Mom," he responds sleepily. "I love you, don't forget that, okay?""Okay," she says calmly.___________________"Dad! You should've called," Jungkook hugs Mr. Kim as soon as he enters his own office. "Were you waiting for long? I should've finished my meeting earlier if I knew you were waiting.""It's okay," Mr. Kim beams. "I came unannounced, so I didn't expect you to be free. I responded to some emails while waiting.""Have you had your lunch?" Jungkook asks politely. He just had his lunch during the meeting while one of the departments was presenting."I already ate," Mr. Kim smiles at him. "I had a brunch meeting, and the food was quite heavy.""Is everything okay?" Jungkook asks, concerned swimming in his eyes. He talked to Taehyung the night before, and the latter was stressed with the slow development of his movements."Shouldn't I be the one asking you if everything's okay, Jungkook?" Mr. Kim gets to the point. "It's been almost two months since we welcomed Taehyung back in Daegu, and you haven't visited even once. Are you giving up on him?""Of course not!" Jungkook protests. He tenses on the couch opposite the wing chair where Mr. Kim is seated. "It's just..." He shakes his head. "I'm just so busy with work that I can't leave.""Jungkook, you can be honest with me," Mr. Kim sighs, leaning forward to focus more on Jungkook. In a kind voice, he says, "It's hard to believe that. You were equally busy when Tae was abroad, but you always make time back then. Tell me, is it true that Tae asked you not to come? Did he really do that?"Jungkook wants to protect Taehyung, but he knows there's no way out. He slowly nods. "It's true," he admits reluctantly. "He wants to fully recover first and told me he will come to me when he's ready.""And you just agreed to it?" Mr. Kim can't believe it. "He needs you now more than ever.""He needs space," Jungkook tries to make sense of their situation. "He needs time to process everything by himself. And I did not easily agree, Dad. I begged that he allow me to see him. You know our Tae is stubborn. There's no changing his mind once he decides about something. But he promised, Dad. He promised that he would come to me. And I'm holding on to that promise.""He can't even remember you, Jungkook," Mr. Kim feels extremely sad for Jungkook."He may have forgotten the time we shared, but he's still the same Taehyung," Jungkook smiles wistfully. "The Taehyung we know never breaks a promise. It's what keeps me going. Whatever is happening between us now, we'll get through it. We'll end up stronger than we did before."Mr. Kim stares at Jungkook in awe. The younger loves his son completely, trusting him with decisions that will either make or break them both, when they all know that he has yet to recover his memories or never remember them at all."Please don't look at me like that,” Jungkook chuckles despite himself. "You know I'd do anything your son asks me to. I'm weak when it comes to him.""You seem so confident," Mr. Kim smiles at him weakly. "What if Tae never comes back to you? I just don't want you to get hurt. You're a son to me, too.""Trust me, he will come back to me," Jungkook assures him. "It may take time, but I'll be waiting patiently. Don't worry, Dad. My love for Tae will never fade."There's no need to tell Mr. Kim that he's very sure because he could feel Taehyung's love for him already. The nights they spend on video calls were like a repeat of the stage when they were getting to know each other years ago. Taehyung is learning things about him all over again. And Jungkook is relieved and grateful that Taehyung never fails to call every single night. He may not understand why Taehyung wants to keep their communication between just the two of them, but his actions show he's still very interested in him. That's enough for Jungkook at the moment. He smiles, remembering their funny conversation a few nights ago when Mr. Kim catches his attention by clearing his throat."You seem to be distracted," Mr. Kim says, suspicious why Jungkook is smiling when they were supposed to be talking about a serious concern about Taehyung. "Is Taehyung's situation funny to you?"Jungkook blanches. "Dad, no!" He hurriedly explains. "I just remembered a funny conversation with Tae. I really miss him."Mr. Kim stares at him for a couple of seconds before he nods. "I understand. If I'm in your position, I'd also hold on to the happy memories we've shared," he sighs, heavy. "Why don't you come home with me? I can tell Tae that I dragged you there and you had no choice."Jungkook appreciates it, but he has to say no. "I'd really want to see him, Dad, make no mistake about it. But I don't want to risk it," Jungkook says with determination. "All of us will never forget what happened the last time I did not keep my words to him. This time, I'd rather stick to it even if it hurts a lot. I want him to trust me again, Dad. He knows what happened even if he can't recall any of it. I need him to fully believe in me. I'm entrusting our future to him. He has my heart and I intend to keep it that way. I have faith in Tae that he's doing these things for us both.""God, my son is so fortunate to have you," Mr. Kim stands up. Jungkook follows suit. "It's the other way around, Dad," he refutes. "I'm the lucky one between the two of us.""I just hope everything gets better soon," Mr. Kim walks to the door. "Tae is so determined to get better so he can work again. But we're all on edge at home because he becomes temperamental at times, especially with her mother.""It's probably just frustration, Dad," Jungkook says sympathetically. "Maybe you can take him out for dinner or something for a change of scenery. Being inside the house for too long is suffocating.""We tried that," Mr. Kim says, defeated. "But he said he'd rather sleep. There was this one night when his hyungs visited and he asked them to leave when he noticed it was almost ten in the evening already. We know Tae is very sociable. Seeing him pushing his friends away is a bit disheartening."Jungkook tries his best not to grin. Taehyung calls him at ten every night."He must be too tired that day," Jungkook reasons."We're really getting worried," Mr. Kim expresses. "He started locking his door when his mom happened to interrupt him a couple of times while listening to an audio book.""Maybe he just wants some privacy?" Jungkook guesses."We're just worried that something might happen to him while the door is locked," Mr. Kim explains. "His legs are not that strong yet. He might fall or something.""Just trust him, Dad," Jungkook tries to play it cool. "Tae is smart and determined. He knows what he's doing."___________________It's been five months since Taehyung came back to Daegu. A minute past ten in the evening, he scrolls his phone to the messaging app to call Jungkook."So I have two good news for you, Jungkookie," Taehyung beams as soon as Jungkook takes the video call.Jungkook is also smiling from ear to ear, seeing Taehyung on the screen, almost bouncing with excitement."Tell me, what makes you so happy, baby bear?" He started using the endearment a few weeks ago. Taehyung did not protest, so he continues to call him like he used to.Taehyung sets his phone on his nightstand. "Watch me," he says, giggling. He walks around the room confidently."Oh, wow!" Jungkook exclaims. "Model Taehyung is back!" He whistles playfully while Taehyung shows off that he can already walk without any pain at all.Taehyung grabs his phone and turns a camera on his bed. "Look at that! A clearance from my therapist and the therapy center," Taehyung squeals proudly. "I'm all healed, Jungkookie!" He suddenly stops. "Why are you crying? Hey! We must be happy now!" He reprimands Jungkook."I'm just happy you're healthy again," he hiccups. "Though you still can't remember a lot of things. Will you be okay with that?""There's nothing I can do about it," Taehyung shrugs. "I no longer want to dwell on the things I can't have back. I can create new memories, right?""Right, right," Jungkook nods, wiping his tears away."I will ask Noona if I can go with her next week," Taehyung informs him. "She has meetings in Seoul. Maybe we can meet at the art gallery?""Really?" Jungkook straightens up. "Oh my, God, I'll be seeing you again!""And I'll be seeing you, too," Taehyung flashes his boxy grin. "Let's talk about it again after I finalize the schedule with Noona, yeah? Just make sure you'll be available.""I'd cancel everything on that day," Jungkook assures him, grinning as well,” so I can be with you.""So for the second good news," Taehyung changes the topic."But you already gave me two!" Jungkook frowns. "The clearance and you coming here in Seoul.""I didn't count going to Seoul as good news," he frowns, too. "I've decided about it just now, still need to talk to Noona.""You just said," Jungkook protests."Yes, yes! It's happening! Don't pout like that! You're doing something to my heart with that face!" Taehyung whisper-shouts."Is Kim Taehyung flirting with me?" Jungkook chuckles."So what if I am?" Taehyung challenges, pouting himself."Look at that pout! A lot sexier than mine!" Jungkook teases."I think you don't want to know the second good news," Taehyung is still pouting cutely."Oh, God, I promise to kiss that pout when we meet," Jungkook whispers."Jungkook! Don't say that!" Taehyung blushes."We've done a lot more than kissing, baby bear," Jungkook teases even more, seeing the other starting to get more shy by the minute."Oh shut up! Bye, Jungkook!""Wait! Come on, you know I'm just teasing," Jungkook explains, biting his lips."You're lucky you're cute," Taehyung murmurs. "Do you want to know the other good news? Or should I cut the call?""Of course, I want to know everything about you," Jungkook says smoothly, winking at Taehyung."God, you're such a flirt!" Taehyung complains."You like it, admit it!""Yeah, yeah," Taehyung admits, non-committal. "So for the news,""I'm all ears," Jungkook focuses on the screen."You'll need your eyes, too.""Okay, I'm all eyes and ears," Jungkook makes his eyes bigger.Taehyung laughs. "You're crazy!"When the laughter dies down, Taehyung asks, "Do you remember the painting I've been telling you about?""Of course! You've finished it?" Jungkook inquires, getting closer to the camera. "Show me!""You're more excited than I am now," Taehyung giggles. He walks to a corner of the room, one he never shows to Jungkook.Art materials are scattered on a table. Beside the table it is an easel, a canvass on it, covered by a black fabric."It's huge," Jungkook comments instantly."It is," Taehyung confirms. "You're the first person I'm showing it to. It's off limits to my family or to anyone else. I don't know why, but something in me wanted you to be the first audience of this piece. Let me put the phone somewhere so I can show it to you, yeah?" Taehyung puts down the phone on the table with the art materials, then pulls his dresser armchair and transfers the phone on it. He walks to the side of the painting and holds the edge of the fabric."Can you see it clearly? Or do you need me to bring the camera a little closer?" Taehyung asks nervously."I have the perfect view, Tae," he shows him a thumbs up. "You look nervous.""Because I am!""It's just me," Jungkook tries to appease him."I haven't done this for a long time, so don't expect too much.""I'm sure it's perfect!"Taehyung pulls the fabric unceremoniously. Then he hears a gasp. "Say something," he bites his lips, anxious."Tae," Jungkook sobs."Jeon Jungkook!" Taehyung almost shouts, pouting. "Is it too ugly for you to sob like that?""Tae," Jungkook is already in tears."Oh my, God, you're crying!" He grabs the phone in concern. "What's wrong?"Jungkook just cries. He can't speak for a moment."You're scaring me." Taehyung starts to worry. "Jungkookie..." He feels like crying, too, and he eventually did.A few minutes pass before Jungkook is able to calm himself. "Tae, please don't cry," Jungkook blows air. He is still extremely emotional. "I'm sorry for breaking down like that."Taehyung sniffles. "Can you now tell me why you reacted like that?" Taehyung demands. He feels his heart constricting inside his chest."I'm really sorry," Jungkook looks at him longingly through the screen. "But can you tell me first about your painting?""Huh?" Taehyung is confused. "What about it?"Jungkook smiles at Taehyung, sensing his confusion."Why did you draw that?""It's stuck in my head," Taehyung whispers. "It's what I see when I close my eyes, the corners, the colors, the surroundings, what's at the back of it. I can even see inside."Jungkook's tears fall again, but he's nodding and smiling as well. "That's our house, Tae," he says, looking past Taehyung, eyes focused on the huge painting. "That's where we're supposed to live after our wedding, where we will start a family."Taehyung stops breathing. He tears up even more as he steps closer to the painting, staring at it intently. He then looks at his phone, at Jungkook who's smiling lovingly at him. "Are you sure?" He asks, voice shaking a little. "This is our house?" He turns to look at the painting again, hand extending, touching it like it's the most precious thing in the world."I'm sure," Jungkook chuckles lightly. "We have pictures, a lot of them. Let me get our camera." He gets up from the couch and proceeds to their study, then opens a drawer and lifts their SLR camera out of it.He steals a glance at Taehyung, who's still looking closely at his painting."Here are the pictures," Jungkook speaks when he found them. He scrolls slowly for Taehyung to digest each one."I remember this beautiful house?" Taehyung whispers to himself, tearing up again."It must have a special place in your heart," Jungkook comments, "since it somehow occupies your mind, too, despite of you forgetting a lot of things."Taehyung looks straight at Jungkook. "Just like you," he says honestly. "I can't really remember the times we were together. But my heart longs for you. You cross my mind every possible chance. I think of you and wonder if you're thinking of me, too. That's why I couldn't let you go. That's why I never fail to make you a part of my daily life. I want to remember you because you make me feel alive.”Jungkook savors the confession. "Does this mean you're taking me back?" He asks bravely."I took you back the moment I promised that I'd come back to you," Taehyung smiles at him. "I took you back the moment we exchanged our supposed to be wedding ring under millions of stars.""Tae," Jungkook tears up again, knowing that they can soon be together."But Jungkookie, I still need a little more time," Taehyung looks apologetic."If I can help you," Jungkook offers."I need to deal with it by myself," he explains. "Please be more patient with me."Jungkook nods. "I was able to wait for a number of years. I can wait a little more.""Thank you," he smiles, thinking that he's really blessed to have Jungkook."I love you," Jungkook traces his face on the screen."I think I,""Is that Jungkook?" They both hear a voice. "It's you! But why are you both crying?""Dad!" Taehyung cries, and Mr. Kim hurriedly hugs him."What's the matter?" Then he notices the painting. "You painted your house? Oh my, God!" He lets go of Taehyung and moves closer to the canvass, mouth slightly open in astonishment."Wow! Is this why you're not letting us see it? Your memory is back?" He looks at the phone again. "Jungkook, how?" Mr. Kim is overwhelmed."He just found out that it's our house, Dad," Jungkook's voice echoes around the room. "He's as shocked as we are.""Wait," the senior Kim smiles. "You're back together?"Mr. Kim and Jungkook are surprised when Taehyung runs to the door. He locks it, and when he turns back, he looks like he's in pain."Jungkookie," Taehyung says nervously. "I need to talk to Dad. I'll call you again tomorrow, yeah?""Sure," Jungkook readily agrees. "I love you, Tae."Taehyung nods and smiles at him."Dad," Jungkook bows a little."Let's talk soon," Mr. Kim grins at Jungkook."Yes, Dad," he grins back. "I'll cut the call now. Bye."They see the homescreen afterwards."So?" Mr. Kim wiggles his eyebrows, teasing Taehyung."You can't tell Mom," Taehyung says worriedly, eyes pleading. He approaches his Dad and clings to his arms. "Please don't let Mom know that I'm talking to Jungkook.""What?" Mr. Kim feels cold all over. He can guess why.Taehyung pales, shaking his head. "Just please keep it between us.""Tae," Mr. Kim sighs. "At least tell me why we need to keep it a secret. Your Mom will surely be elated to know that you and Jungkook are making progress."Taehyung falls on his bed and cries like a child.Mr. Kim panics and hurriedly sits beside him. "Tae," he calls on him softly. "Why are you crying? You can tell me. Come on, son, I'm here to listen to you."Taehyung continues to sob. "I can't let Mom suffer more.""What are you talking about? She will be happy."Taehyung shakes his head. "You don't understand. She won't like any of it. She'd breakdown," he says, breaking down himself. "She deserves a better son. I tried. I really tried, Dad."Mr. Kim pulls Taehyung up for a hug. And the latter cries hard on his chest."Son, talk to me. You know I will listen to you. Tell me everything. I want to understand what's wrong, why you're crying like that. It's breaking my heart, seeing you suffering like this."Taehyung hiccups and sobs more. His father has no choice but to whisper comforting words while hugging him. After several minutes, his sobs start to subside. Mr. Kim lightly pulls away to wipe his tears."Now, tell me what's wrong.""Mom," he says, hesitating. "But let me just resolve it alone. Dad. I'm sorry for crying like that. I guess I'm just more emotional lately."Mr. Kim chuckles good-naturedly despite the situation."You haven't changed, Tae," he smiles wistfully at his son. "You prefer to suffer alone and bottle up your emotions inside. But maybe I can help? Maybe if you share your thoughts, I can have some explanation about it? Maybe you're seeing things in a single perspective? Try me, Tae. You know you can always depend on me."Taehyung fidgets. He is not sure if sharing what he knows and feels will affect the relationships in their family. But he is hopeless. If he doesn't share his feelings, he's afraid that he'd reach a state of despair wherein he won't be able to recover. He is silent for a few minutes, trying to decide what to do.Mr. Kim gives him time to think, not prodding him to speak."Okay," Taehyung exhales loudly. "Okay, I will tell you. But can you keep it to the both of us first? Just until I'm ready.""Tae," Mr. Kim can't keep a secret to his wife. It might create more problems. But he's worried that Taehyung will not open up. "Okay, let's keep it between the two of us. But just for a while, yeah? I will tell you my thoughts after I hear everything. Deal?"Taehyung nods. He's been keeping it to himself, and he badly needs to let it out."Mom hates Jungkook," Taehyung whispers.Mr. Kim groans. "Of course she doesn't."Taehyung looks at his father helplessly.Seeing his son's reaction, Mr. Kim quickly appeases him. "I'm sorry. I promised to listen."Taehyung looks down. "I'm not sure, Dad," he whispers. "I don't think it's a good idea. You won't believe me, anyway.""Tae, no! I'm sorry, really," he hurriedly says, wanting to slap himself for his mistake. "It's just that among us, your Mom is the one who loves Jungkook dearly."Taehyung looks at his father, searching his eyes, trying to see if he's bluffing."You may not remember, but your Mom treats him like his own son.""Maybe," Taehyung tries to understand, "that was before the accident. Now, I'm sure he hates him.""Didn't your Mom reprimand you when you were not talking to Jungkook before?" Mr. Kim asks. "She catered to Jungkook when he was around; when there's just the three of you there.""It's totally different when Jungkook's away, and she thought I was asleep," Taehyung looks like he's going to cry again. "The worst was when I was not yet able to open my eyes or move. I heard everything she said, Dad. The hurt, the anger, the frustration, her fears.""Tae...""She said she'd rather die than see me back with Jungkook," Taehyung whispers, tears falling uncontrollably. "I didn't understand at first. I didn't even know who Jungkook was. I had no idea what she's talking about. All I knew was that my mother was in extreme pain because of me. I told myself that whoever Jungkook turns out to be, I'd never give him a chance. Not a single bit. Not at all. He was the cause of all our pain, so I'd never give him an opportunity to hurt us further. I didn't want my mother, who stayed beside me, to suffer even more. Dad, I wasn't even able to hug Mom to give her comfort. I was just there, hearing every word.""She didn't mean it," Mr. Kim is also tearing up. "She must've been so frustrated, and she said those words to ease her pain.""To the extent that she'd rather die?" Taehyung asks. "We are honest when we think no one else can hear us. We tend to say what we really mean when we know we're just saying them to ourselves.""Tae, it's not like that," Mr. Kim tries to correct him."She meant every word, Dad," Taehyung sobs. "I felt every word. That's how she feels. So I feel like shit now. I feel like I'm choosing Jungkook over my own mother. Jungkook, whom I can't even remember."He places his face in his hands, crying as if in pain. "But my heart can't resist him. My heart calls for him. I tried. I tried so hard and ignored him. I thought it would be easy since I practically don't know him." Taehyung hits his chest repeatedly. "But my heart is so stupid to recognize him.""Stop it, Tae!" Mr. Kim holds his hands to stop him from hitting himself."I was keeping my communication with Jungkook from you," Taehyung holds his father as well, like a lifeline, "because I feel like I'm betraying you. I feel so guilty. I tried to convince myself that your love would be enough for me, that you, all of you combined, could love me more than I could ever ask for. But it hurts. A lot. Just the thought of letting him go makes me want to just go back in a coma.""Tae! Don't you ever say that again," Mr. Kim reprimands.Taehyung chuckles dryly. "Now, you at least understand how I felt every time Mom cried by my bedside, saying how she'd sacrifice herself. But how can I not love Jungkook back? He loves me with his whole being, Dad. He's patiently waiting for me. But how can I tell him I'm asking him to stay away from my family because my Mom would rather die than see us together? I don't want to hurt him. He's so precious to me.""Just love him, Tae," Mr. Kim embraces him. "You don't need to hurt him. Love him with all your heart. Because that's what he's doing. He's giving you his all.""What about you?" Taehyung asks fearfully. "Will I lose you? Will I lose Mom? I don't think I can handle it. I know I've been unfair to Jungkook, making him wait like that. I planned to eventually let him go. I thought of ways to make him leave, but I just can't do it. Can I be honest with you, Dad? I'm buying more time, because in the end I believe I'm going to choose him. Will you ever forgive me?""There's nothing to forgive," Mr. Kim pulls away to hold him at arm’s length. "You were about to get married. You left this house a long time ago to pursue your dreams in Seoul. You've met him and have been living with him for a long time. You belong together, a perfect gift to each other, to have and to hold forever." Mr. Kim smiles at him. "Your Mom, she may have said those words, but..."Both of them startle when they hear Taehyung's phone, filling the room with Jungkook's voice, saying baby bear repeatedly.Taehyung stands up to pick up his phone, brows furrowed in worry."Jungkookie," he says in a rush as soon as he answers the voice call. "Are you okay? Is there something wrong?""Hey, baby bear, please don't panic," Jungkook starts, sensing the tension in the other's voice. "I'm sorry for calling. I know we agreed that I should wait for you to contact me first. But I need to talk to you. It's nothing to worry about. But I don't know if you'd like it.""What is it?" Taehyung is nervous. "Please tell me before I burst an artery.""I'll be there," Jungkook announces straight up. "I'm on my way to the jet. I'll be there soon.""What, why?" Taehyung gets even more nervous. "It's past midnight. You can't come here. Jungkook, please. I'll just go to you. I'll have Dad drive me to Seoul now. Just please don't come here.""I don't know why you're keeping me away," Jungkook responds carefully. "I know you have your reasons. But I already promised that I'm coming right away. I can't take my words back.""You promised?" Taehyung is confused. "I don't understand.""Your Mom, she asked me to come."Taehyung opens his mouth to speak, but his mind goes blank."Tae? Are you still there?" Jungkook's voice comes out full of concern."Please just stay in Seoul," Taehyung almost begs."Tae, she was crying when she called me a while ago," Jungkook explains. "How can I deny her?""What's wrong?" Mr. Kim decides to intervene. "Is everything okay? Why are you crying again?""Dad, Jungkook is on his way. He's coming here," Taehyung relays. "Mom asked him to come.""Let me talk to him," Mr. Kim opens his hand, waiting for Taehyung to give him the phone.Taehyung hesitantly hands his phone to his father. "Dad, please convince him to stay put. I don't want him to know.""Jungkook?""Dad, what's wrong?" Jungkook asks, really bothered. "Did Tae and Mom fight? I can hear Tae crying. Mom was also crying when I talked to her earlier.""What did she tell you?" Mr. Kim questions cautiously. He doesn't want to agitate his son even more."She was crying, so I didn't understand her at first," Jungkook narrates. "I was actually scared that something bad happened to Tae. But after a few minutes, she calmed down. She then asked me to come immediately, said she needs to talk to me and Tae together. I didnt agree right away. I have a commitment to Tae that I'd wait for him here and not visit Daegu unless he tells me. I can't go back and not keep my words again. But Mom was sobbing. She even begged. Dad, what's going on? I'm actually trying so hard to be calm here. But I can sense that there's a problem and I can't help but be bothered.""Just have a safe flight, son," Mr. Kim mutters seriously."But, Dad!" Taehyung protests. "Please, no! You can't let him get hurt!""Huh?" Jungkook gasps hearing Taehyung's words. "Are you hurt, Tae? Dad? Please tell me everything is okay.""Just get here safe, Jungkook," Mr. Kim instructs. "Come straight to Tae, you know his room here.""Dad, but is Tae okay? He's crying," he can't just let it go."He'll be okay," Mr. Kim assures him. "More so when you get here. We'll see you.""I just arrived at the hangar," Jungkook lets him know. "Can I talk to Tae before we cut the call?"Mr. Kim hands the phone to Taehyung and walks to the painting to give them a little privacy."Jungkookie," Taehyung breathes out, trying to project that he's calm. "There's no need to come here, really.""Baby, I'm already here and about to board the jet," Jungkook says in worry. "I hope you won't get mad that I'm coming without your consent. But it's Mom.""I'm not mad. I'm just scared," Taehyung breathes out, trying to project that he's calm but failing terribly. "I just want to protect you from pain. You've been hurt for so long already.""Hey," Jungkook responds, voice sweet but determined. "I can handle myself. Why would you even think that I need protecting from you and the rest of our family?"Taehyung bites his lips. "I can't," he finally murmurs. He can't bring himself to tell Jungkook about his dilemma. He can't tell him about his Mom's thoughts.Jungkook is distressed. "Promise me you'll try to be calm, yeah?" he whispers softly. "I'll be there soon. I will give you a hug and everything will get better. Just hang in there, baby."Taehyung nods, as if Jungkook will see him agreeing. "Okay, I'll wait for you," he mutters. "Just be safe, please.""I will," Jungkook reassures. "I will, I promise. I will be there before you know it.""Okay," Taehyung says timidly."And Tae?""Yeah?""I love you."Taehyung struggles for air. But before Jungkook can cut the call, he speaks. "Jungkookie?""Yeah?""I love you, too."___________________"We really don't have to do this," Taehyung whispers, leaning heavily on Jungkook's side, their hands clasped together. "We can leave now, right, Jungkookie?" He looks at the other, eyes pleading.Jungkook has no idea what's happening. But he can feel the tension, everyone is tensed around him."Baby, are you sure you're okay?" He asks worriedly. "I know you just said that you're fine, but one look at you, and I'm positive that there's something wrong."He looks at the Kims, and they're not any better, especially Mrs. Kim. She's so pale. They're sitting on the couch opposite the loveseat they are in."Jungkook, please," Taehyung tries to stand, but Jungkook holds him in place."Mom called me to come here," Jungkook explains softly to Taehyung. "It's only right that I wait for her to talk to me before we leave." He looks over at Taehyung's parents. "Would it be okay if I take him to Seoul?""Jungkook!" Taehyung glares at him. "I'm an adult. I can decide on my own! Just say that you don't want me with you is Seoul!" He disentangles himself from Jungkook. But Jungkook is quick to hug him to his side. "I'm asking their permission because they are your elders," he reasons out. "And of course, I want to know if your therapy is already completed. We can't leave if there are sessions left. We can't risk your recovery. Your health is of utmost importance, Tae."Taehyung sags in defeat. "Then let's go to my room now so we can sleep," Taehyung suggests, not even once looking at the direction of his parents. "It's almost dawn. I'm sure you're exhausted. Because I'm so tired already.""I'm not sure," Jungkook hesitates, his eyes go to the Kims again. "I felt like Mom's call can't wait, so I rushed over. Maybe we can talk for a couple of minutes so she can tell us why I was suddenly asked to come."He realizes what he just said. "I don't mean to be rude," Jungkook quickly says. "I'm not complaining at all. I love that I'm here right now. I terribly miss Tae. And I'm glad that I can spend some time with him."Mr. Kim nods. "It's totally fine," he says, also hesitant. "Taehyung is right, I guess. We're all so tired at the moment. You both better rest now. We can talk after you get enough rest. We'd also try to sleep for a while.""I think it's a good plan, Dad," Taehyung breathes a sigh of relief. He stands and pulls Jungkook up.When they were about to go to Taehyung's room, Mrs. Kim speaks."Have a good rest," she says, dejected."Mom," Taehyung pauses, then runs to her, hugging her tightly. "Just please let it go," he whispers. "You said you're over it, right? Let's spare Jungkook the details. He suffered enough.""I can't," Mrs. Kim whispers back. "I need to come clean. I love Jungkook, too, and I'd be forever guilty if I'm not given an opportunity to apologize to him.""But Mom," Taehyung wants to protest when he feels a huge hand on his back. He looks back, and Jungkook is right there, gently trying to give support."I guess we better talk now," Mrs. Kim murmurs tiredly. She cried a lot when she explained herself to Taehyung while they were waiting for Jungkook to arrive. She said she initially felt really angry at Jungkook because she needed someone to blame. She was so miserable, it was not easy for her to see Taehyung's condition. And she blamed the one he saved, like most would have done. She was so sorry for what she did, that she even tried to get rid of Jungkook, finding ways for him to give up on Taehyung. She poured her heart out.Taehyung admitted that he knew from the moment he gained consciousness; that he decided not to give Jungkook a chance. But his heart betrayed him because he felt how the man continued to truly love him. This fact triggered a breakdown from Mrs. Kim. She was especially heartbroken knowing that his son, who was so confused about everything when he woke up from the coma, kept the suffering to himself. She obviously added to his pain instead of being the one who provided him comfort during his most vulnerable condition.Taehyung assured her that he understood why she did what she did. He hugged her tightly and promised that he'd always love her and nothing would change that. But Taehyung prefers to keep the problem among themselves. He believes that the issue was between him and his mother, that there's no need to involve Jungkook since the two of them already talked and cleared the misunderstanding. But Mrs. Kim is adamant. She did a lot of things to Jungkook that she's not proud of. And she needs forgiveness from him. Thus, the current dilemma."Jungkook," Mrs. Kim calls out his name. "I'm sorry.""Mom, please," Taehyung says with pleading eyes. They all hear Mr. Kim sigh heavily. "I think we need to settle things once and for all," he states, looking at Taehyung. "Please go and sit back on the couch.""But Dad," Taehyung protests, feeling betrayed by his father."No need to apologize, Mom," Jungkook senses the tension building up, so he tries to intervene. "It's totally fine that you called me late. I'm actually elated to come here and finally be with Tae.""I'm apologizing for something else," Mrs. Kim says sadly. "But please sit down first, I have a lot to say."Jungkook nods and pulls Taehyung along with him to the sofa across their parents.Taehyung just lets himself go along. He's too tired of crying himself. And he knows at this point that his protests and pleadings would no longer be heeded. So he braces himself for the worst.Jungkook looks at him when his hold on his hand gets tighter. "Are you okay?" He whispers worriedly."I am not," he can't lie to Jungkook. "I'm scared. For you.""For me?" He asks, totally confused.Taehyung nods, and his tears start to fall again. But he wipes them hurriedly. He knows breaking down would not help any of them. It might create more trouble if he lets his frustration rule over him."I'll be fine," Taehyung whispers shakily. "But Jungkookie, remember that I love you, yeah? I hope you give weight to how much we've been through and choose us at the end of everything.""You're talking in riddles," Jungkook starts to get nervous after hearing those words. But he decides that as long as Taehyung loves him, nothing will shake him. Even if Taehyung suddenly realizes that there's no love in his heart anymore, he'd continue to love Taehyung no matter what."But I'd love you forever, my baby bear," Jungkook assures him. "Nothing can break me. Please trust me on that."Taehyung nods and then rests his head on Jungkook's shoulder. He closes his eyes, preparing himself for what's to come.Jungkook gazes at him in worry, then looks up at the Kims who are observing them closely."Can I take Tae to his bedroom first?" He requests respectfully. "I think he is really very tired."Taehyung lifts his head up. "No!" he objects. "I'd stay here with you.""Are you sure?" Jungkook worries. "You look like you're going to pass out any second."He is indeed very tired. But there's no way he's leaving Jungkook alone when he hears what his mother has to say. He wants to be there for Jungkook, give him a hug that he's sure he will need."I'm sure," Taehyung says firmly. Pushing himself to look alert, nodding up and down.Jungkook looks at their parents again and frowns. This time, they're seated like him and Taehyung. Mr. Kim is obviously supporting Mrs. Kim, a hand running on her back, just like what he's doing in affection to Taehyung."Maybe we can start to discuss now?" Jungkook asks. "I can see you're all tired. Since it seems important that we couldn't sleep first, it's better if we get on with it, don't you think so?""You're right," Mr. Kim nods in agreement. "Honey?"Mrs. Kim smiles nervously at his husband and reaches out for his free hand; she holds it with both of hers. She looks really nervous. But she clears her throat and looks at Jungkook, who already has his kind eyes on her."I made a grave mistake," Mrs. Kim says softly, and she starts to cry.Taehyung hugs Jungkook's waist and hides behind him, also crying."Forgive me, Jungkook, for I did you wrong. I'm so sorry. I have no excuse." Mrs. Kim sobs, her body shaking all over."Mom, I forgive you, whatever it is," Jungkook says, clearly bothered. He can't bear watching her like that. He loves her for a long time as Taehyung's mother. Taehyung's embrace tightens around his waist. He can feel his shirt getting damp with his tears."Hey," Jungkook pulls him from his back and cradles him in his arms, kissing the top of his head repeatedly. Taehyung hides his face against his chest, his arms going around him."You don't understand," Mrs. Kim shakes his head. "I need to get this off my chest. I need you to listen to what I did. I can't face you in the future, as my son's husband, knowing that I was so cruel to you at one time. I can't simply shove it under the rug for it to haunt me in the future. I need to let you know now. Please, let me confess."Jungkook's chest feels heavy with fear. "Mom, I don't think it's necessary," he says, too afraid to find out what Taehyung's mother did."Please?" Mrs. Kim mutters. "Please, Jungkook. I beg you.""Oh, Mom! There's no need to beg," Jungkook already feels like crying, and nothing has been said yet.Mr. Kim hands a glass of water from the side table to his wife and guides her to drink some of it.Jungkook waits patiently while Taehyung silently cries in his arms.Mrs. Kim finally looks up and focuses on Jungkook. "When the accident happened, I was totally devastated," Mrs. Kim starts. She narrates everything - her anger, resentment, her need to blame someone; the things she did, the tactics she used for Jungkook to give up, even her hand in convincing his parents to keep him away. Everything. Jungkook feels cold all over. He didn't expect the extent of revelations that he's hearing at the moment. He starts to cry when Mrs. Kim talks about Taehyung and his suffering of knowing what she was doing."Baby, why didn't you tell me?" Jungkook asks Taehyung, hugging him protectively. "We could've shared the pain. Why did you prefer to suffer alone? God, I'm so stupid for not recognizing your suffering."Taehyung simply shakes his head, not trusting himself to speak."I'm sorry," Mrs. Kim cries, she approaches the two and kneels in front of them."Mom! What are you doing?" Jungkook says in panic.Mr. Kim is quick to hold his wife. He tries to pull him up, but she's planted firm in her place."I'm sorry, I am so sorry," she repeats."Mom!" Taehyung kneels with her and hugs her.Jungkook follows and hugs them both. They stay on the floor, crying their hearts out, murmuring words of comfort to one another. When their emotions calm down a bit, Mr. Kim pulls them up and have them share the same couch to sit."Mom," Jungkook starts. But Mrs. Kim cuts him off."I'd fully understand if you'd hate me," Mrs. Kim says, still visibly agitated. "I saw your suffering. I knew that you love Taehyung with all your heart. But I still made it more difficult for you. I still chose to be selfish.""I could never hate you," Jungkook clings to her arm, crying like a child."Oh, God!" Mrs. Kim embraces him. "I'd always be thankful that you're Tae's mother," he says, Taehyung smiles at him, wiping his tears, also crying. "But I must admit that I am hurt," he says honestly."All the things you did made me suffer. All those things also broke Tae's heart. But I understand where you're coming from. You are Tae's mother. Your first instinct was to protect your son. It's only logical that you wanted to get rid of what might hurt him in the future. You were hurt, too."Mrs. Kim sobs uncontrollably. "I don't know what I'd do if you gave up on Tae because of everything I did," she cups Jungkook's face. "Thank you for understanding. I'd forever work hard to show you how much I appreciate your love for my son. You didn't deserve what I did, and I'd forever make it up to you.""I'd forever love your son, no matter what," Jungkook responds, glancing at Taehyung, whose eyes are already puffy because of too much crying. "I'm not going away. I will not repeat the same mistake again. He will always, always come first. I promise to protect him until the end."They all hug one another again. This time Mr. Kim joining in from the back of the couch. After a moment, he speaks."I'm so glad we can leave it all behind," he says, relieved. "But we must keep in mind what it all taught us, yeah?" They all nod in agreement, smiling and crying at the same time."Is it too early to ask for Tae's hand in marriage again?" Jungkook blurts out.The Kims laugh as they all stare at Taehyung ."I don't know," Taehyung hesitates. "Can we take things slow? I mean, I'd want us to spend more time together. Is it okay if I at least get the feel of my old life first? I want to get back on track.""Of course," Jungkook is quick to assure him. "I'll be here waiting for you, my baby bear."___________________Taehyung opens his eyes and reaches out to the other side of the bed. Cold and empty. He picks up his phone from the nightstand. It’s three in the morning and Jungkook is still out. His phone falls on Jungkook's side of the bed as he tries to sleep again."Where is he?" He murmurs. He closes his eyes but can no longer sleep. He grabs his phone back and dials Jungkook's number. It rings and rings, but he doesn't pick up. He is about to throw his phone across the room when it rings. It's Jungkook, calling."Bun, where are you?" Taehyung says tiredly. "It's just a few hours before our wedding, and you're still out?""I'm sorry, baby," Jungkook says in a rush. Taehyung can hear panicked voices around."Where are you? What's happening? Is everything fine?" He says worriedly, getting up and picking up his wallet and keys. He can hear the ocean waves. "Where exactly are you? Answer me, don't move, I'm coming to get you!""Hey, hey! Calm down," Jungkook almost shouts when the people around him start to talk in louder voices."Jeon Jungkook! Where are you and what trouble are you in?" Taehyung demands."Is that Tae?" He hears his own mother asks Jungkook. He doesn't hear Jungkook respond, but his mother immediately speaks again."You should go up to your room," she urges him."Yeah, we can handle everything here." Taehyung hears Mrs. Jeon as well. "Tae must be wondering where you are. Don't make him worry.""What if I ask him to come here, instead?" Jungkook suggests."No!" A unison of voices ring out loudly."Go back to your room and rest with Tae," Mr. Jeon orders his son. "But,""No buts, son," Mr. Kim cuts him before he can protest."Okay," he hears a defeated Jungkook on the line. "I'm coming up, baby bear," he then says to Taehyung, who is so confused at the moment."What's happening? Why are you all together?""I'll tell you when I get there," Jungkook sighs. "Give me a few minutes, and I'll be there.""Okay, please hurry!" Taehyung demands."Yep! Love you!" Jungkook says before ending the call. It's been two years since they had that important talk in Daegu. Taehyung still can't recall everything, but he is happily living with Jungkook in their beautiful home, the one he painted from unknown memory, along with their two dogs - a pomeranian and a doberman.Jungkook's company is thriving, while Taehyung is now more popular as an artist who had his comeback sold-out exhibition in the first twelve hours after the opening. Every single one of his painting were bought except for that painting of the house. He decided not to sell it as a reminder of what they've been through and how they successfully overcome it.It is now displayed in Jungkook's office. He tells anyone who would listen that the piece gives him peace. And that just by looking at it, Jungkook's confidence is boosted; like he can do anything and face everything that the world throws at him.Taehyung smiles, remembering the moment when both him and Jungkook were standing in front of it after the exhibition opening. It was roughly seven months ago. He was in awe, talking about the significance of it in their lives when suddenly, Jungkook went down on one knee and asked him for marriage. Taehyung immediately said yes. They're both so sure that they want to spend the rest of their lives together. And now, they're back in Hawaii, and in a few hours, they'd officially be married. The elders were all against having the wedding back where they suffered the biggest blow in their lives. But the couple insisted that they need to replace the bad memories with the best ones.Taehyung walks to the door when he hears it open. "Is everything okay?" He asks when he sees the tired face of his soon-to-be-husband. He automatically hugs him and gives him a soft kiss on the lips."Everything's fine now after that kiss," Jungkook chuckles and then kisses Taehyung deeply. "Seriously, I feel a lot better now that I'm here with you."Taehyung whines. "I panicked when I woke up, and you were not beside me. So tell me, what happened? You all sounded stressed, like something terribly wrong happened."Jungkook sighs, worry evident on his face. "Apparenty, another couple's requirements were sent here by our planner," Jungkook informs him. "Ours was sent to Vegas.""What? It was interchanged?" Taehyung is shocked.Jungkook nods in disappointment. "Everyone's in a panic.""We're you able to contact the planner?" Jungkook nods again. "What did they say?" Taehyung asks anxiously."They apologized. But they can't get what we ordered back here in time for our wedding," he narrates.Taehyung is quiet, mind busy absorbing the information."What if we just use what they mistakenly sent us?" Taehyung suggests, hoping it can be a solution.Jungkook laughs loudly."What?" Taehyung is starting to get offended."You'd kill me if I made that suggestion, and if you've seen what are in the boxes downstairs," Jungkook shakes his head, tears falling from his eyes from laughing too much."Would you like to share why you're laughing that much?" Taehyung raises a brow. "Babe, apparently, the wedding in Vegas has a theme," Jungkook tries to be serious. "Elvis.""What?" Taehyung is flabbergasted."You heard me," Jungkook shrugs. "All the items are about Elvis - miniature guitars, blue suede shoes, souvenir sequined jumpsuits, and yeah, a couple of standees of the grooms wearing Elvis outfits.""Oh, God!" Taehyung exclaims. "Tell me you're joking!" "I'm not, though," Jungkook pulls him for an embrace. "The miniature paintings of our home, the cute mini-standees of Bammie and Yeontannie, among other things we painstakingly prepared, are all in Vegas.""This is so annoying!" Taehyung cries."Well, the planner can't do anything about it," Jungkook tells him the truth. "But of course we can.""What do you mean?" Taehyung perks up."I guess the boxes downstairs are already being hauled to the airport," Jungkook says casually. "The jet is ready to take them to Vegas, with a goal to get our own boxes back.""Oh, thank God!" Taehyung sags against Jungkook in relief."Sunhee Noona has been contacting the couple in Vegas, but they're probably just waking up there," Jungkook tells him more."Why not let the planner do it?" Taehyung asks. "It's their fault, anyway. We thought they're the best ones!""A new staff apparently confessed about the mix-up," Jungkook caresses Taehyung's back as he relays the information. "But no one trusts them anymore. So our families took the initiative to take over.""Why didn't you wake me up? I felt bad when I woke up, like something bad happened. Like a dejavu," Taehyung leans against the other's chest."I'm sorry. You were sleeping so soundly," Jungkook explains. "Our moms were in panic, and they dragged me out of here to see the boxes. I was not able to leave a note to let you know. Then when I saw the contents of those boxes, I totally got immersed into dealing with the situation, into making it right for you. For us.""Thank you. You're really the best," he smiles lovingly at his soon to be husband."Let's hope our boxes arrive in time for the ceremony," Jungkook murmurs against Taehyung's neck. "But even if we don't get them back, what's important is that the two of us are here, getting married in a couple of hours. Finally," Taehyung says, breath hitching when he feels Jungkook's hand inside his shirt, softly touching his back."Absolutely, having you in my arms right now is the most important to me," Jungkook breathes out before capturing the other's lips in a searing kiss.Nothing else matters but the two of them.
