Feathers are Confusing

Work Text

When Hawks leaves his apartment, he scatters a few feathers behind for whenever Dabi might stop by. While it might be a good idea to make sure the villain isn’t stealing anything while he's gone, that’s not why Hawks does this. It isn’t to keep the villain out, it’s quite the opposite. It’s to keep the villain in.He can feel the temperature rise the second the villain enters while he's gone, and waits for Hawks to arrive. Though, before Hawks started leaving his feathers behind, the villain would get impatient and leave a note behind that he was there. It happened more times than not, to the point Hawks started to get annoyed. So he waits for Dabi to come home and entertains him with his feathers. Before, Hawks would deny that he even cared if the villain would show up or not, but at some point Hawks started to miss the presence of the pyromaniac and felt disappointed when he couldn’t make it back home in time. It gave him something to look forward to, while he was working all day.Dabi often went straight to the couch to rest or watch tv, but when he wasn't lying around waiting for Hawks, he was in the kitchen cooking. Hawks loved to mess with Dabi the most in the kitchen. He can hear the slight vibrations of pots and pans being moved, and the temperature of various dishes on the counters. Of course, Dabi gets annoyed at some point and Hawks would find himself eating a half cooked meal for revenge, but it was worth it.Feeling Dabi’s skin without actually feeling it, hearing Dabi’s heartbeat, and slightly using pressure guiding his feathers in a certain direction, specifically when he knows Dabi’s using the cutting board. Hawk’s feathers can move his arm slightly, messing up Dabi’s cutting, and having him huff in dissatisfaction at the uneven vegetables, it was hilarious. He would move things around the kitchen when Dabi’s not noticing, even change the channel with the remote. It made Hawks laugh out loud during work. Receiving lots of concerned looks everyday. His workers thought he was finally going insane, like he snapped or something.
Truth is, this is the happiest Hawks has been, during work. It felt like he was actually hanging out with Dabi, while being at work doing all the boring stuff at the same time.
Most of all, Hawks loves it when he can feel the weight of trinkets on his feathers by the window, and bringing his gifts back to him during work. Dabi brought him many things, be it jewelry or random shiny bits he found on the streets. In Dabi’s eyes it may be trash, but for Hawk’s its gifts, shiny bits that he can add to his nest. Which is probably why Dabi’s delivering these gifts in the first place. Trading trash in order for the bird to leave him alone.
Dabi originally started hanging around the bird’s apartment for attention, since the bird rarely came around the league since he's been invited. It seems like all of a sudden, the bird lost time for him.
Not him, Hawk’s lost time for the entire league.Even hanging out at the bird's apartment wasn’t enough. Dabi would sleep on the couch for hours, just for the bird to not show up. Hawk’s would be at work until 12 and Dabi would be out recruiting.
Truth is, if Dabi just waited a little longer maybe the bird would get home in time for him. Dabi was just too impatient to wait another minute after waking up.
Dabi would leave notes behind, telling Hawk’s of his presence and yet the bird never writes one back. Instead of changing his schedule to buy Dabi more attention, the bird would leave feathers behind to follow his every move.It wasn’t like Dabi didn’t enjoy their company, in fact he liked them a lot. It was the only thing not leaving him bored out of his mind. He would catch a feather moving things around in the kitchen, helping him move things out of the way. They would sometimes nudge him when he’s cutting vegetables and distract him from cooking. Which is why Dabi doesn’t like them. They distract him from everything, and Dabi keeps having to avoid Hawks eyes at the table when he receives something half-cooked. It’s not like its Hawks fault either, Dabi just appreciates their attention too much. To the point he doesn’t even notice it when they change the channel to something less boring. One feather changed the channel to a Nature Documentary, in which the guy on the screen described birds specifically Blue Jays liking shiny things. Although they didn’t mention whether or not Hawks like shiny things, it was worth a try.
After he gifted Hawks some jewelry he stole; from a thief trying to snatch his coat, the bird started to come home earlier and way happier. Dabi started gifting as a daily thing.
Hawks was examining his treasure box of jewelry that Dabi gave him. “You know i'm not gonna stop bothering you just because you gifted me these right?” There was a silence in the air for a little bit, Hawks assumed the information was getting through to Dabi’s head. Except, Dabi still looked just as confused as he started talking.

“When did you bother me?”

…

“Like everyday…?”

Now Hawks was confused. Choosing to look at Dabi with confidence, like he was the one confused.

“That was you messing with me?”

The way Dabi said it made Hawks feel incredulous. Especially with the way Dabi looked while saying that. He was grinning a little, and looked like he was holding back a laugh. Hawks’s eye twitched, “well I thought I was until now!”

Dabi laughed, full on

laughed,

his head flew back and he was gasping from lack of oxygen. Hawks grew embarrassed, his whole body growing pink. “Quit laughing!”

Dabi wiped away a fake tear, “okay, okay, sorry.” He looked right into Hawks eyes. “Was distracting me with affection and attention so your meal was half cooked meant to punish me or you?”

“Idiot! I thought you did that on purpose to get back at me!” Dabi paused, “Wait, so you didn’t leave your feathers behind for affection?”

Originally they were meant to keep you home.

But Hawks couldn’t tell him that. “Well kind of, but me leaving my feathers behind and what they do is two separate stories!”

“Okay good, cause I thought I was gonna have to burn this whole place down.” Dabi smiled. It was more unnerving than if he were to give his usual grin or cocky look. Instead he looked threatening, like he actually meant it.

He probably did, I’d ruin the whole place too if I thought something that I thought of as affection was really a teasing gesture to mess with me.

Then again… “I guess me joking around with you wasn't just for laughs and fun.” Hawks set the jewelry box down, and sat beside Dabi on the bed. “It felt as if I was really there with you, and kept work less boring.”

Dabi looked away, his skin was slightly smoking.

This is new.

He hadn’t gotten the chance to fluster

Dabi

before. They hadn’t really gotten the chance to take things slow either. This domestic lifestyle they slowly acquitted still held no name. “I didn’t mind the company was all.” Hawks turned Dabi’s head towards him, they were close. “So if those pieces of trash and stolen goods weren’t meant to screw me away… what were they for?” He knew the answer, he just wanted to hear Dabi say it.

Just like his feathers were keeping Dabi home, Dabi’s ‘trash’ was an anchor bringing Hawks closer to home everyday. “Tell me why you left your feathers behind in the first place, then maybe I’ll talk.”

Hawks gave in, he knew Dabi would never admit what they have, so he’ll have to, he leaned in and kissed him. “I wanted to keep you, what’s your reason?” He leaned back, barely a centimeter apart. Dabi was still looking at his lips, healthy skin flushed red, seams of smoke filled the air. “Maybe I wanted you home earlier.”

— (bcuz this is a one shot and idk how to continue)

Toga was explaining to Twice as to why Dabi and Hawks are both cuddling on the couch watching the commission burn on tv.

“And now they're dating!”
