He can’t believe it. He can’t believe he did it. He jumped into his car, his hands shaking. A maniacal laugh bubbled up in his throat, nearly slipping out into the cramped air of the car. He started the engine speeding off in the night. He betrayed his friends. They were supposed to take the money he stole and burn it. Instead he called the cops. It was a set up. He had no idea if they knew it was him. He didn’t stick around to find out.He felt tears start to build, his throat burning. A scream built its way up from his chest, coming out into the air. He beat the steering wheel out of pure frustration. Why? Why did she make him do this? He loved his friends. They were like the family he never had. But I guess he loved her more.He didn’t know where he was going to go. But it wasn’t to her. Where she was waiting. He drove for hours. The scenery changed as he sped. Eventually cities turned into forests. He slowed down a bit more. A glance to his right showed that the money was still there. He didn’t know what to do with it. Should he burn it? Like he and his friends were supposed to? A determination settled into him. He was going to burn it. And leave the traces of her behind. She never loved him in the first place. As he drove something caught his eye. A pretty yellow butterfly. He watched it fly by his window. But he wasn’t paying attention to the road. In his distraction, he moved out of his lane and into the other. He swerved back, and lost control of the wheel. The car spun around. He closed his eyes. This was it. The car flew off the road and rammed right into a tree.Yeonjun could feel himself floating. It was a nice feeling. Freeing almost. Before he drifted off he saw a face. It had warm brown eyes and a soft smile.Soobin.
Yeonjun woke up with everything hurting. His face hurt, his body hurt, and most of all his heart hurt. He didn’t know where he was. Was he even alive? Bright lights flashed across his closed lids. He fluttered his eyes open. Bright hospital lights burned into his retinas. So he was alive. A groan slipped out of his lips. He slowly turned his head to the side. He was startled when he saw who was standing in front of him. His friends were here. And they were staring right at him, hatred swirling in their eyes. And closest to his bed was Soobin. His normally warm eyes now dark and full of hate. Hate for him.Panic ran through him when Soobin walked closer to his bed. He stared down at Yeonjun’s pitiful broken body. Yeonjun closed his eyes, whatever Soobin was going to do to him he deserved. A soft touch fluttered across his cheek. Confused, Yeonjun opened his eyes. Soobin was staring down at him, his hand touching Yeonjun’s cheek gently. Yeonjun leaned into it. But the hand moved. Down to his throat. Soobin’s fingers pressed against his throat tightly.Yeonjun choked, his airway getting cut off. His eyes widened looking up at Soobin who stared down at him indifferently. He could feel himself slipping away slowly. A soft whimper slipped out of his lips even though he tried to suppress it. The last thing he saw was Soobin’s eyes burning into his.He slipped in and out of consciousness a few times. He’d see his friends, relive some of the moments they shared, even the bad ones. He’d hallucinate a few times, thinking his friends were here to hurt him for what he did. He thinks his mother visits him a few times. He isn’t sure, everything’s a blur. Eventually everything comes to a stop. He blinks his eyes open. His mother is sitting by his bed smiling at him softly. Everything comes crashing down all at once and soon he’s crying.“Oh my baby.” His mother coos, she slowly gets up and wraps her arms around him. He buries his face in her neck breathing in the faint scent of her perfume.“I have good news for you Jun.” She whispers.“What is it?” He mumbles.“You’re getting released! They were going to keep you for longer, but they decided against it.” She says.“Oh.” Is all he replies. She helps him get into his clothes. They walk out of the hospital and Yeonjun’s mom waves goodbye to the lady at the desk. They drive to his house. His mom babbles about the latest gossip while Yeonjun half-listens and looks out the window. Watching the streaks of buildings go by. They arrive at the house. Yeonjun’s mom helps him out of the car. He tells her he can do it himself. He walks up to the house and heads straight for his room. And there he stays, occasionally coming out to eat and talk to his mom before going straight back. He watches the news. His friends' faces pop up. Soobin and Taehyun had gone to jail, and they were still looking for Huening Kai and Beomgyu. Kai and Beomgyu escaped? He didn’t know whether to feel happy or scared. If they had escaped then they were probably on the hunt for him. He feels guilt rise in his gut. It gets too much and he switches the t.v off.It goes like that. Eat. Sleep. Eat. Sleep. A constant of eating and sleeping. Occasionally checking the news to see if they had caught Kai and Beomgyu. Eventually his mother comes into his room. There’s a soft smile on her face. She sits down next to him on the bed. “Jjunie, sweetie. You need to go out.” She starts.“Why?” Is his immediate answer.“Because, all you’re doing is making yourself more miserable. You need to go out and do something honey. I don’t really care what you do. Whether it’s drugs or partying or even driving out into nowhere just do something.” She says a frown taking place on her face.“Are you kicking me out of the house?” It wasn’t a malicious question, more out of curiosity.“No, I’m just Worried for you Jun.” She rubs his back.“Okay I’ll go somewhere.”
He ends up at the abandoned dance studio. Where the five of them spent most of their time together. He looks up at the old building. It’s starting to fall apart at the edges but other than that it was perfectly safe. He walks in seeing that the stereo was still there. He presses the button and it makes a loud tune, signaling that it was still working. He pulled out his phone and connected it to the stereo. Once that was done he walked over to the dirty mirror. He stared at his reflection. The blue had faded out of his hair completely, leaving his natural color. His eyes looked dull and tired. There were eye bags underneath his eyes as well. A result of not sleeping well. Oftentimes he would wake up from nightmares of his friends. Whether it be them beating him to near death or them leaving him. He could see their faces twisted in anger burning in his vision.Yeonjun sighed. He stretched for a while, until he deemed himself ready to dance. He pressed play moving back in front of the mirror. He let the music flow through him as he stretched his limbs out. His eyes slipped shut as his body flowed in time with the soft beats through the stereo. IIt felt good. To be dancing like this again. Him and his friends used to dance all the time. They weren’t as passionate as him but they still danced. He remembers the happy, content smiles on their faces, the laidback moves that they made as they moved their body to the beat. It was one of his fondest memories. Laughing and dancing, no one worries in their minds as the music consumes them. The music ended and he stopped breathing heavily. For a while it was silent until he heard the soft sound of applause. “You were always the better dancer out of all of us.” A voice pipes behind him.He turned and they were there. His friends. He blinked, confused. Was this another hallucination? Another dream? “How?” He asked, his voice frail.“Soobin hyung and I got out early for good behavior. And I’m sure you already know about Huening and Beomgyu.” Taehyun said.Yeonjun nodded, looking down. He didn’t believe that they were real. A tear slipped down his cheeks. They can’t be real. He would look up and they would be gone. He heard footsteps draw closer to him. Then strong arms wrapped around him. Their colonge washed over him. Soobin. Yeonjun pressed his face to Soobins shoulder, wetting his shirt. More arms wrapped around him. They were giving him a group hug. He sighed, his arms sliding around Soobins waist. They stayed like that, the only sound being the soft music coming through the speakers.Eventually they let go. They were still here. Which means that they are real. They talked for awhile. Yeonjun noticed that there was some tension between Soobin and Kai. Like they were avoiding each other. He had no idea what had happened to them after they left but he could guess that something went wrong.“Hyung I have a question.” Beomgyu said after a while.“Yeah?”“Where were you when the cops showed up?” Beomgyu asked.Yeonjun froze. “W-what do you mean?”“I mean. We noticed that when the cops showed up you were gone. Did you escape too?” Beomgyu wondered.Yeonjun bit his lip. They were looking at him curiously. They didn’t know, and now he has to tell them. He could feel his legs weakening, his throat was starting to close up and he couldn’t breathe. “Hyung relax, you’re starting to have a panic attack. You need to breathe.” Soobin’s soft deep voice filtered through his ears.He followed Soobin’s advice and tried to take deep breaths. “I…” A sob fell out of his mouth.“I’m so sorry.” He sobbed. He kept repeating the same words, over and over. “Hyung what…?”“I did it. I called the cops.” He said.Silence, then… “What?” It was Beomgyu.“What?!” He was shouting this time.“I-I’m sorry.” Yeonjun said.Beomgyu stepped closer to him. And closer. And closer. Then, he slapped him. Hard. Yeonjun fell to the floor. Blood dripped out of his lips. His cheek stung and he was sure it was red. He spat out the blood and looked up. Beomgyu was staring down at him, hatred swirling in his eyes. Beomgyu grabbed Yeonjun’s collar and slammed him against the mirrors. Yeonjun groaned and felt the air woosh out of his lungs “Why the fuck did you call the cops on us you asshole?!” Beomgyu shouted.“I…It was because of her!” Yeonjun cried.“You called the cops on us because of your stupid girlfriend?!”Yeonjun nodded. Beomgyu scoffed, disgust on his face. “You fucking asshole. I can’t believe you.” He said lowly.“I’m sorry.” Yeonjun whispered. He scoffed again. “Sorry huh?”“Beomgyu, lay off him.” It was Soobin that said it this time. There was hesitation in the way Beomgyu let him go. He backed up from Yeonjun and turned around. Yeonjun removed himself from the mirror and stepped forward. Suddenly Beomgyu turned around quickly and punched Yeonjun straight in the face. Yeonjun fell to his side. There was more blood flowing out of his mouth. He spat it out. Then Beomgyu was on top of him pummeling his fists down on to him. He was screaming awful, awful things at him. The boys ripped him off of him, he was still screaming.Yeonjun lifted himself from the floor. Limping over to the door. He pulled it open and walked out.“Yeah you better run you fucking coward!” Was what Beomgyu yelled after him.And he agreed. He was a coward.
