Grace grudgingly got out of bed to relieve her bladder. Elliott had let her and Harvey stay in his cabin for their honeymoon, but it was colder than she expected next to the ocean and she wanted to get back to the warmth of her husband. She couldn't believe after all they had gone through they were finally married!
As she left the bathroom her eyes strayed out the front window to the ocean and on a whim she decided to slip outside for a few minutes. Memories came crashing in with the waves and she sat with her toes in the water reliving them fondly.
Warm hands appeared on her neck and shoulders, Harvey she knew in an instant. “I'm sorry if I worried you, I just wanted to spend a few minutes here before I came back inside.”
“I wasn't worried, I just don't like letting you out of my sight just yet.” She saw his blush in the moonlight and smiled at how innocent he still was sometimes.
She patted the sand, inviting him to sit with her. She felt the same way, and was glad he had joined her. “Did I ever tell you I used to visit the valley when I was a little girl?”
Harvey shook his head. “Not that I recall. Did your Gramps live here your whole life?”
“No, he and Gram moved here when I was five and for the next four summers I would come spend two weeks with them. It was the highlight of my summer and I couldn't wait to get here. The year Gram died Gramp's wasn't up for my visit, understandably, but I never ended up coming back for my summer trips after that.” Harvey wrapped an arm around her shoulder and she leaned into him before continuing. “One of Gram's traditions was to wake us up at midnight and we'd trek down here to the beach and sit for a while and talk. The last summer she told me something that has stuck with me my whole life.”
Grace smiled as Harvey kissed her hair. “What did she tell you, Sweetheart?”
“She told me that all the stars in the sky came into existence every time someone overcame a trial in their life. Obviously she was lying through her teeth,” Grace laughed softly. “It was nice to think about though as I grew up, every time I got past something I didn't think I could another star would just appear. I know she was trying to make life more exciting for me, but it was kind of sweet to think that any time I made it through something she was up there creating a new star for me to see as a record of what I've accomplished.”
Harvey sat with her in silence for a few minutes, running his fingers through her hair, looking out at the stars and contemplating which ones were there from his own accomplishments. “I think after what we've gone through we deserve at least two stars each.” He smirked down at her as she laughed and agreed with him.
The young couple stood, brushed the sand off each other, hands straying where they didn't strictly need to go before hurrying back to the cabin. As they shut the door four new stars appeared in the night sky.
