Late Night Pickle Jar

Work Text

with the number of times prismo has been watching jake after they met, he already knew jake wouldn't want to call him first. not unless it was an emergency that depended on the fate of the entire universe. they're two completely two different levels of beings. of course, prismo sees jake as an equal. maybe even higher than that. he's just never met someone like
him.
prismo has had some relationships, some crushes in the past. but no one has treated him like jake does. and they've only had very little interactions. jake is a friend and he might be for the rest of time. but glob, does prismo yearn for his next guest to be that yellow 'ol dog with a charm. but time passed and, as patient as prismo was, he knew he should probably make a move to call jake in. the wishmaster powered on his wall's TV and impatiently switched through jake's reality, trying to find the nearest clock to see if it was a decent time to just plop jake in there. it was night. so that would mean jake is either heading home or has already hit the hay. now he was starting to feel bad. what if jake's just not in it today? what if he comes off as clingy? what if he ruins their already perfect friendship? what if-- oh, fuck it.

inside the treehouse, prismo's pickle jar set on the kitchen table began to unnaturally just... start to walk. not really with legs. just hopping across the floorboards. and it was
loud.
barely subtle. and extremely embarrassing to prismo behind the screen, gritting his teeth with every scream of scraping wood. alright, this wasn't working. the jar hovered itself all the way up the ladder to finn and jake's bedroom. "finally," prismo muttered. "damn
pickles," luckily, jake was a deep sleeper. however, finn mertens was not. a lovely inconvenience. the blonde heroine was already tossing and turning in his sleep before. now he began to mutter while he slowly was brought back to consciousness. prismo cried, "crap! dooon't wake up, finn! oh, glob!" as much as he liked finn, this was just a call for jake but it's almost impossible for him to specify that. unless...

"wh-- prismo ?" finn finally jolted awake and stared dumbfounded as the pickle jar that was supposed to be on the kitchen table was now hopping its way towards jake's bed. repeatedly glowing, "J-A-K-E" in morse code. of course, finn couldn't understand. that's more PB's line of work. but it was obvious enough to assume this was for the dog that was... dead asleep. mertens kinda scooted his way towards jake, kneeled to his ear, and whispered, " prismo pickle... " two key words that got jake springing out of bed. prismo sighed in relief and smiled. " PRISMO! " jake called out. without another word, he set his two paws on the glass jar and was sent to the time room. finn yawned and climbed back into his sleeping bag.

" prismo, prismo!" jake wagged his tail and wasted no time to scurry up to the wall and lick prismo's face. it was equivalent to a kiss in dog culture, but he wouldn't tell him that. prismo laughed while the area under his eye flushed a hot pink, "you made it, jake!" prismo exclaimed with glee. the dog laughed in response and plopped down on his belly, kicking his feet back and forth like a high school girl talking to a boy on the phone. prismo shadowed a hand over jake's back with a sheepish grin. his eye suddenly found the floor extremely interesting. this is platonic.
totally. trust. "i saw you did all that crazy junk with the pickle jar. you could've just waited until morning, man!" jake teased. prismo blushed and smiled a bit too wide-- as if the embarrassment couldn't be borne. prismo stammered, "i--i know, i know. but you never... call first so-- you know, i... i didn't wanna forget. you-- uhm... y'know?" jake only tutted and grinned, "how could you forget, prismo? you're the best!"

"aw... well-- pfft... gah! i forget real easily. trust me."

"no way! "

"yes way!"

they both broke into a laughing fit. to the average person, it was apparent that they had a crush on each other. and don't you worry-- lady rainicorn knows all about it. any chance he gets, or when lady asks, he's going on nonstop about this ethereal, multidimensional beauty. jake's words, apparently. but prismo could never know. he checks up on jake, however, not enough to be listening in to what he's saying. prismo just assumes that boundary with most of the people he meets out of habit. "what's 'goin on, prismo? partying it up? met some freaky people? got a
girlfriend?" jake nudged. the girlfriend question would always just be a filler. a distraction for himself. that feeling of one-sided longing is ironically mutual for the two. but everytime jake mentions a possible love interest for prismo, the pink shadow grimaces. or holds back one and it always turns out to be an ugly or obviously forced grin. it was especially uncomfortable for him because he was out to
nobody.
not even his closest friends. always referring to his past partners as a she, girl, woman, etc. the cosmic owl always knew, deep down. it was an unspoken thing just for prismo's sake. and prismo knew cosmic owl would accept him no matter what. but he just wasn't ready for that. it's terrifying for him. "yeah... totally. ah-- the partying bit, i mean. never in a million years would i get another girlfriend. i'm kinda over it... y'know? it's just not..." prismo began, hissing as he breathed to prepare the other set of words, "... for me. you know?" he tilted his head. god, he was desperate. at least for jake to understand what he meant. but of course, the magic dog was oblivious. that's just how it is. "like... dating?" jake had a little bit of sulk in his tone. but prismo just couldn't hear it for the life of him. he shook his head, blushing so dark it almost painted his whole head. "just, uhm-- girls. you know? like... they just don't get it?"

"get what? i think girls are pretty chill, man. well, most of 'em. there're some crazy chicks out there." jake chuckled. oh god, not like that, prismo thought. he was so frustrated, he felt like he would just burst and confess his love right then and there. but that's stupid. and he still has some dignity...
surprisingly, after his whole fanfiction fiasco, "i just... girls don't get me and i don't get girls. it's weird, i know, but..." prismo trailed off. he couldn't find the words, yet they were caught in his throat, desperately trying to crawl their way out of his mouth. "you're a real mystery, prismo. maybe someday i'll figure you out. but for now, i'mma just sit here," jake rolled over onto his back, which did make prismo a little sad now that he couldn't hold jake anymore. good thing he savored that as much as he could. glob, he's a hopeless romantic. prismo smiled, although, while he shared a good moment of looking with jake, "...how's lady?" he gritted his teeth. he wanted to ask something so bad about jake. to know more about him. but lady was his only outlet, he felt, to not seem weird. other than asking how he's been doing. it's not like prismo doesn't like lady. she seems very sweet. it's just-- he's jealous, obviously. who wouldn't be in his situation? "oh, lady? she's awesome! i haven't seen her in a hot second, though. i do miss her... my kids miss me too, she says," jake provides a melancholic smile-- which just thrashes prismo in the gut, "aw, jake... haven't found time for them?" he pouts, changing position so it looked like he was leaning on one elbow. with his free hand, he summoned a cup of coffee for himself. then, of course, one for jake. who was somehow wide awake-- but it's the time room. prismo took care of jake's sleepyness since he arrived. "not really. it's not like finn's a handful but... after the war, i think i've somehow been busier. both with adventuring and other bizz. isn't it nuts? how stuff just stuffs like that!" jake took a sip from his cup 'o joe, proudly, "oh man! you made it how i like it!" jake exclaimed. prismo's eyebrows raised, "i didn't even notice! i kinda just guessed... went halfway with it," he flushed a little. "it's totally my type, pris.
perfect," jake remarked. the magic dog looked up at the looming god and smiled. then... it finally clicked for prismo,

"
oh."
