Evan and Eddie were taking a walk in the forest surrounding their cottage. It was a cool and damp evening and dusk was already falling. They were on their way back when a soft hoot caught their attention. They searched through the tree crowns until another hoot sounded through the clearing they were in."There," Eddie said and pointed to a bush in the thicket. Caught in the branches was a tiny owlet. It was clear he or she was hurt."We can't leave it here … it will starve," Evan murmured as he knelt in front of the thicket. He reached for the tiny animal. It screeched in fear but before Eddie could keep him from touching it, Evan began his Disney Princess routine and started to softly sing to calm the little creature down and it did.Eddie watched fascinated as Evan cupped the tiny body and carefully cradled it close."It has a broken wing," Evan said softly before cooing to calm the wee animal down.Eddie nodded in understanding."We can't get it to the mainland. The waters are too wild for our boat and Ian is only coming back next week," he said softly."So we will do what we can for it," Evan said as he carried it toward the cottage.Eddie opened the house and shooed their greeting committee out of the way. Together they walked into the kitchen and carefully settled the owlet in a nest made from a big towel.Evan carefully righted the broken wing and accepted the splint Eddie handed him, followed by a bandage. Once they got the sweet little bird settled, Eddie went and prepared some thin slices of meat to feed it.The cats were all curious but could see that their approach wasn't welcome. So they searched out their perches and watched while Maverick sat by Evan's feet as the men took care of what seemed to be the newest member of their family. He scented the little bird from where he sat and whined softly.Eddie went to build a safe nest for their newest resident to ensure the cats wouldn't try to eat the trusting little bird. It was really calm which surprised Eddie and when he mentioned it to his lover, all he got in answer was a sweet smile.Evan walked away, cradling the towel holding their hurt new resident carefully, and settling it carefully in the traveling box Eddie had gotten ready."If Christopher knew he would call you a Disney Princess," Eddie said softly as he peered over Evan's shoulder into the box.The owlet gave a soft hoot as it settled down in the dark safety. They all settled down on the ground in front of the box to watch the sweet owl."If he does, he can choose the owlet's name," Evan answered softly."I think we should name it Hedwig. Even if the owl isn't the female," Eddie murmured with a smile playing on his lips."Hedwig," Evan murmured, "I didn't think you liked the Harry Potter books."Eddie rolled his eyes."I wouldn't say like but both you and Chris enjoyed them and that is enough for me," he murmured.Evan smiled and curled against Eddie's side. He liked the fact that they were close in ways he had missed when he had still been in Los Angeles.Eddie wrapped his arms around Evan, held him close, and pulled him into a gentle kiss. This right here, was utterly perfect for them.Neither of them missed Los Angeles now that they had each other. They had lost a lot due to the lawsuit and every friend they had made back there had turned their back on them when they didn't like the way either of them handled things.By now, they had made new friends — some old with friendships renewed, some really new — and they were better for it.
