Work Text

A few months have passed when Django and Dr.King Schultz were supposed to head back to Mississippi.
Django couldn't keep his dear wife out of his mind. He couldn't be more excited to find out where his Hildi is and to bring her home with him. The two fellow men went into a bar to discuss plans about finding the girl over a few glasses of beer. The former dentist brought a small book that contained information about the previous slave trades in Mississippi. Both of them looked for a clue, the surname "Von Shaft" was found on the following page."It says she was the former slave of the Von Shaft residence, before being traded off to the brittle brothers."Django listened carefully to each word his partner read out loud. His gaze met Django's and they both stayed silent.Django seemed to be thoughtful before Dr. Schultz told him of his idea."We could go to the Von Shaft residence and we might find out more about where your wife might be."Django hesitated before nodding, his expression was determined. "I can't wait no longer, I have to see my Hildi."Both of the two men got on their way on horseback to the Von Shaft residence. On their way they held a simple conversation about Broomhilda's background."So the masters of the residence are probably German right?", asked the very curious Django. Schultz turned to him and responded with:" That is very likely if they are still the same masters, Django.""How do you know they will be able to tell us the current location of her? They sold her off to the Brittle brothers and they probably won't have known about her afterward."The older man cleared his throat before speaking out:" I know, Django. They are our only clue since the trades afterward were not official." ____________ They conversed some time more until they reached a  fancy house with a big garden. The architecture reminded Schultz of his homeland, which made the corners of his mouth lift upwards."So this must be it", he smiled.
Both got off their horses and they made their way to the entry, knocking on the wooden door. After a few seconds, the door was opened by an elderly lady. She was dressed like a German mistress, her dark blue gown with silk material and her Pearl necklace screamed wealth. The woman herself did not look German at all. Her Afro-textured hair and her dark skin tone made her appear African American. The woman had a kind smile on her face as she made eye contact with the doctor."To what do I owe the pleasure of your unexpected visit?" She had a German accent when speaking, which made Dr. Schultz even more intrigued."Guten Tag, Frau Von Shaft. Mein Partner Django Freeman und ich, Dr. King Schultz, sind hier um Ihnen ein paar Fragen, bezüglich der Dame Brunehilde Von Shaft zu stellen. Sie ist doch hier bei ihnen aufgewachsen, nicht wahr?"(Good day, Miss Von Shaft. My partner Django Freeman and I, Dr. King Schultz, are here to ask a few questions about the fellow lady Broomhilda Von Shaft. She grew up here, didn't she?)The woman had a surprised look on her face and answered:" Please enter, gentlemen."Both of them sat on a red leather couch in front of a chimney as the mistress sat in front of them on an armchair.A slave girl dressed nicely entered the living area and asked:" Is there anything the gentlemen might need?"The mistress smiled at the young girl and answered:" Please bring us some peppermint tea and Baumkuchen, dear." The girl smiled in return and made her way to the kitchen area.King smiled at the mention of his favorite German dessert, Baumkuchen was a cake specialty he hasn't eaten in years. He took a deep breath before speaking."So you understand the urgency of this situation, Django was a former slave. He and Brunehilde were married but they were separated after being sold off. Now we want to find her so they can unite again." The mistress nodded in understanding and introduced herself as Henriette Von Shaft. She was unwed and the residence was hers, it was passed on to her from her German Mother. After she got pregnant by a slave, She brought her daughter to her home country and Henriette grew up with her grandparents. When she was of age, the residence was passed upon her, since her mother has died of cancer. Since then, she stayed at the residence and has lived off the goodwill her family has left for her.The woman was interrupted by the young slave girl that re-entered the living space and placed the dishes and food on the table."I'm sorry for interrupting you, miss.""It's alright dear", she smiled and continued where she left off with her story."I got pregnant by a very young gentleman that I met on a special occasion and after that, my beautiful Elise was born. I named her after my favorite music piece, für Elise."The German man chuckled and added:" Well you have immaculate taste in music, Beethoven is always a classic."Django took a sip of the tea and moaned in content. „It is my first time drinking hot water with herbs, and it tastes damn good!"The other two chuckled in amusement, as King Schultz put some of the cake on his plate. The elderly woman smiled and continued:" Well you see, my mother bought slaves and gave them a better life at home with more freedom and better treatment than other slave owners."Both of the men listened intently, being quite interested in the story."A few months after my mother's passing one of the slaves, her former best friend to be exact, got pregnant and died in childbirth so I raised her myself, teaching her some German and giving her a German name, Brunehilde."Django's expression was a mix of confusion and anger. His eyebrows were scrunched together and he frowned."What made you sell her off, if you raised her 'as one of your own'?", he asked angrily. The woman met his gaze and her face softened. "I do not exactly know how that happened, as it was not my doing. My daughter sold her off on a day that I wasn't here."Both men looked at each other in confusion, why would her daughter do such a thing? The woman noticed that, so she continued:" She held some resentment against me growing up. She was a difficult child, I used to visit doctors but no one knew what was wrong with her. She was bitter, always trying to hurt me and she'd found something that would make me upset. I am not exactly sure,  she did not interact much with me since then."King continued to eat his piece of cake as Django asked more questions. The particular woman raised lots of questions in their head."Where can we find Hildi?"Henriette seemed to be in thought before speaking out loud:" I cannot say, you might ask my daughter as she will have the answers you need. I heard she's currently in Boston.""Boston? Now we gotta travel up to north again", exclaimed the former slave. The woman stood up to give them an envelope. „Please give this to Elise, I want her to read this."Django glanced at it before taking it from her. „You can count on us, Miss Von Shaft."The German gentleman now stood up as well and said:" Thank you very much for having us here, madam. We will take our leave now.""I hope your plan goes well, I hope you two will have a good day."They bid each other farewell and the two men got on their way on horseback, the elderly lady closed the door behind her and muttered something under her breath. "I thought I'd heard the last of you." ______________ They made many stops on their trip to rest and eat and then continue on their day.The trip took about 1,5 months, a long amount considering they were already supposed to be on their way to Broomhilda. The day they reached Boston, they went to all kinds of Bars, asking people about a so-called Elise Von Shaft. Many said she was out of town while others believed she was at all kinds of clothing stores. It was morning, 8 am to be exact, the partners were going to make a stop at a small bar to drink something when someone catches their eyes.A woman sat at the bar, an alcoholic drink on her left side while a notebook with writing on it was on her right. She wore a long red gown out of cotton that fully covered her arms and legs. She had luscious brown curls that were put together. The two men sat next to her and ordered two beers. Both took off their hats and placed them on the counter. The woman turned to them to take a look at the mysterious men that just sat next to her.  Her presence was alluring, intimidating, and dark. Now they could take a better look at her. She had beautiful full lips, brown colored doe eyes, and her skin was tanned, a true beauty. She had red lipstick that matched her gown. On top of her lap was a big hat with a red ribbon that she presumably only wore outside.King Schultz stared a little too long at her face, his gaze then fell to her bosom which was shown nicely thanks to the support of the corset she wore.He then noticed the hat on top of her lap, while others wore hats inside too, Germans only wore them outside.
'A German mannerism', he thought.‚So this must be her', he scratched his beard. The woman closed her notebook, took a last sip of her drink, then put on her hat and stood up.She gave them one last glance before going in the direction of the exit.Django turned around and followed the lady to the door, where she abruptly stopped walking."Excuse me, madam, are you Miss Elise Von Shaft?" The woman glared at the African American, looking him up and down before responding."Why do you wanna know?", her English was clear with no sign of an accent.Django looked back to King before proposing an idea to the mysterious lady."Why don't ya sit back down, and let's discuss some things over a couple of drinks."The woman squinted her eyes in confusion. Her gaze held mistrust and hostility."I do not have much time, so cut the chit-chat. What do you want?"The German man stood up and walked up to Django."Good morning young lady, my partner and I heard that you may know about Broomhilda's whereabouts", he said in a friendly tone."So my whore of a mother told you about her life story or what?", she sneered. The two men shook their heads and King was going to continue before he got interrupted by her."What do you wanna know about that nigger gal? She's in different hands now anyway."King squinted his eyes at the offensive use of language and lack of empathy in her voice.
Elise's tone was monotone when she spoke, with no sign of any emotion. Her eyes were dark and glaring. The older man sighed before requesting her help.
"We want to find Broomhilda, Django's wife. You'd be a great help."The woman in question raised an eyebrow in response."What do I get in exchange?"The man chuckled and responded with:" Whatever you'd like, Miss Von Shaft."The woman smiled in delight before requesting something very questionable for a lady."I'd like two revolvers with enough ammo that would last me months, since I cannot get my hands on those myself."Both of the men's eyes widened in shock.
Why'd she need such things? Before they could ask any more questions she spoke again."Do we have a deal?", the woman looked at them with a raised eyebrow.Dr. Schultz leaned in for a handshake and nodded. Django and her shared tensed eye contact before it was broken by the older man."An envelope from your mother." He gave it to her and she opened it before tearing the letter apart.King's shocked expression once showed itself again. "You haven't even read the letter, Miss!"Elise smirked before throwing the pieces of paper on the ground."It's none of your business what I do.""You're right, it is not. Just your mother was a very nice lady we met back then and she may have written important information on that piece of paper."The young lady ignored his concerns and turned her gaze to Django."Let's get down to business, shall we?"The three headed back to the bar and sat down calmly. They ordered three beers and began to discuss their plan.Elise took a sip of the beer and gulped the bitter substance."I sold the girl off to the Brittle Brothers. About a year later they wanted me to buy her from them, they didn't tell me the reason though. I wanted to decline since I did not need a new nigger but I would not give my mother the satisfaction of seeing her again, so I took the offer." She spoke nonchalantly as if none of this was a serious matter or any of her actions questioned her morals.Django scoffed at her. "All of this because you hate your mother?"He took a deep breath before continuing:" Do you have any idea... of how crazy you are?"The woman tilted her head, answering."You mean the nature of this conversation?"Django shook his head and responded:" I mean the nature of you." She leaned towards his right ear and whispered something."You better behave like the slavenigger you are before I'll shoot you right in the face."She chuckled before adding: "And with your gun too."She caressed his ear dangerously with the gun she had taken from him in a moment where he didn't notice. She leaned back and placed the gun into her hat. "This will be mine for now."The Doctor seemed to be frightened. In his 50 years, he had never met someone as dangerous as her, not exactly because of her doings, but because of what she was capable to do. "So as I was saying, after buying her from the Brittle brothers, I sold her to a family in Mississippi. The boy was like in love with her or something. He passed away, though, got killed or something." "And where is she now?", asked King. She smirked before taking a sip of her beer, taking her sweet time."I've heard she's on Candieland. The plantation in Mississippi that's owned by Calvin Candie." "Great, then let's go to Candieland and buy her free", proposed Django.Elise shook her head and argued:" Calvin doesn't reside there. It takes him like 2 days to travel to Candieland. He won't travel that long for you to buy a fieldnigger."King groomed his beard before asking Django:" Didn't you say she's well mannered and spoken too?Why would she be working on the field?"Django traced the 'r' burn mark on his cheek while telling him she's got one too, which would make her not 'pretty enough' to work inside the house. All three of them tried to think of an idea before Elise spoke out loud."It's being said that Candie is active in the Mandingo business, we might be able to act interested in buying one of his Mandingo fighters and just buy Broomhilda as an extra."King clapped his hands in delight, approving of the idea."How will we do this?", questioned Django. "Django, you will have to act as a Mandingo expert, a slaver. You will give me tips on which Mandingo to buy." "And I'll have the role of your daughter, you're German aren't you?"The older man nodded and said:" My name is Dr. King Schultz."The three of them put their hats on again. Django's gun now sat nicely on Elise's head. "Great, then we have a plan." __________
