You called, I heard
Soi was one of your precious children. He had been from the beginning. But how was it that you knew he was there in the first place? He asked you about that one day...
How was it you knew to make sure he got a snack? How did you remember to check his homework? How did you know he was around when he was invisible most of the time?
Well... not all parents are like you. Not all are hyperfocused on each child they have, and sometimes it's hard for them to bond with their children, even if it's just one or two compared to your thirteen.
But you, you noticed the small things. You noticed how Kalego-San had always collected thirteen assignments. You noticed how there was an empty seat next to Iruma despite him being so popular.
It did take you a week or so to connect the dots. But once you did, you made sure never to forget. No child should ever feel forgotten.
You focused your magic on sensing Soi's presence. It's much easier than trying a head count. You would sit in front of his desk, going over formals quietly on paper. Pretending you needed to practice as a reminder.
You would hum the tunes that he had played as the pixie every now and again. It was nice when the others realized they had one more in their group. How they were determined to help Soi rise.
Soi seemed happier now that he was invited and remembered by his classmates. He wasn't just there in the background anymore. He was there with them, causing mischief and playing.
So when Soi asked you about the why... why would you pay attention to him when you had twelve other kids? You turned and looked at him. "You called, didn't you?"
Soi was taken aback by your question, and you only smiled before continuing. "It wasn't out loud, but you called. You wanted to be seen. Even if by one person, you wanted someone to acknowledge your effort. You were tired of being told to hide."
The small demon stares at you in surprise. In a way, he had been calling. Even if he was invisible, his inner voice screamed, 'Here I am!' and you had heard it. You didn't tell him to suppress it. You didn't tell him to remain unseen.
You treated him like he was seen, even when he wasn't physically. You made a spot for him in your heart just like you had the others. He was your child.
He cried in your arms and thanked you. You held him close and hummed a lullaby. Your poor darling. He was so stressed about always going unnoticed that he was overwhelmed by someone who fully noticed.
No more need for worry. He was found. He would never be lonely again. He was safe and seen in your family. You would always hear his call.
