Winn likes the temperature warmer. He had it on seventy-four before Mon-El moved in, though the man almost died the minute he entered, having had his in the DEO set at sixty-nine. After a long discussion, they decided on seventy-two.
Most nights, they get takeout or pick up fast food. Both can more or less cook, but they’d rather not.
Every night, they watch a movie or a show together. Mon-El missed out on a lot of great entertainment - y’know, being from space - and Winn’s determined to show it to him. 90s-2000s chick-flicks and rom-coms are their favorites.
At first, they’d sit on opposite ends of the couch. They’d have different blankets and keep to themselves. Within a month, though, that changed. It started with Mon-El being curious about Winn’s favorite blanket. He’d always use the same one; it was blue and white, knitted, with tassels on the end. Mon-El reached out to one of the tassels, once, and the other got protective over it.
“Ah, ah, ah, mine!”
“But it looks so comfy.”
“Fine, you can touch.”
One touch quickly turned into them sharing it, because not only was it oh-so-comfy, but it also turned out to be an absolutely HUGE blanket. Winn had just folded it a couple times to make it smaller and thicker.
Winn, of course, noticed the way that Mon-El soon ditched his own blanket to stretch out Winn’s to its full size and lay it across both their laps. But then it wasn’t as warm because there was too much space in between. A third of the blanket lay across an unoccupied cushion; the one that separated the two men. At some point (neither really know when) Mon-El started inching closer to Winn. In under a week, he had taken to the spot right next to him. The unoccupied cushion didn’t matter anymore, and the blanket could be folded a couple times, allowing for max-coziness.
Quickly, their closeness developed into more than just where they sat for movie nights. Two bowls of popcorn became one; two drinks became one with two straws (and, eventually, just one straw).
Outside of living together, their friendship continued to grow, too. Winn was still helping to train him; they’d both help Kara when she was out on missions; and on nights where they didn’t lounge in the apartment, they’d get drinks together with their friends.
A few times, especially on nights where Kara and Alex would have their sister time together, they’d get drinks just the two of them. they’d call it their ‘bro time’ - a play off of the title belonging to their beloved girls.
They’d drink and play bar games or share stories until late into the night. Winn and his human tolerance would always be much drunker than Mon-El, but that’s okay, because his roommate would always be there to guide him home safely.
One time, they were approached by a man in a hood, and Winn utterly panicked. The robber tried to take advantage of the situation - of Winn’s anxiety - but didn’t get far as Mon-El quickly decked him into next Tuesday. Thanks and apologies both tumbled out of the drunken man’s mouth at Mach speed, but his friend only smiled and promised, “I'm always gonna keep you safe, okay?”
When Winn woke up, hungover, the next morning, that’s all he could remember about that night. That’s all he cared to remember.
After that, bro nights were no longer called that, for something happened that neither felt was brotherly. Sure, he protected him because he cared for him, but not exactly in the way a brother would. Neither spoke about it, but both felt it.
Around the third month of their cohabitation, Mon-El had begun cuddling into Winn’s side during movie nights. They both quickly found they appreciated the warmth and comfort brought by it, especially as they headed into colder months.
One snowy night in particular, when the heat broke in their apartment, the line was blurred even further.
Not enough blankets in the world could keep Winn warm, and eventually, he found himself wandering into Mon-El’s room to see if the man was up. He was - not because he couldn’t sleep (he was warm enough by his own muscle and alien biology) - but because he was worried about his friend. So the minute Winn knocked on his door, he was ready to console him. He had been preparing for it - afraid to ask himself, but knowing he would soon enough be too cold to withstand it. It wasn’t hard to convince the little human to crawl into his bed, and from there, he wrapped a strong arm around his body and brought him close. For the rest of the time the heat was broken, Winn wasn’t cold a single night.
After it was fixed, he found himself too hot, then, to continue to sleep in his bed. Winn retreated back to his own, but that’s not to say there weren’t nights that he didn’t sneak back in just to cuddle.
Despite the fact that they continued to grow closer with each passing day, nothing ever changed between them. Anything that was felt was never mentioned; their heads were flooded with questions, but their hearts didn’t dare to ask, so time went on. So for now, they’re still roommates, and good friends, and both in love with Kara, but also, secretly, maybe, a little in love with each other, too.
