----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
The space that greets me is devoid of any trace of occupation, as if frozen in time. The walls, once adorned with artistic paintings and cherished memories, now stand bare, bearing the faint imprints of where frames once hung. The absence of personal belongings leaves an eerie sense of emptiness, allowing my imagination to wander through the former owners' lives.“You need to put your money where your mouth is,” Hayley chuckled as she began to put the dishes away in the cupboard. It was one of her monthly gatherings at her home, a game night of sorts where all her friends would come together and just relax from the hectic recording schedule ahead of their next album.“Listen, you talk so much for someone so small,” Zac chuckled as he put the plates away in higher cupboards, ones that Hayley couldn’t reach because of her height. She laughed and shook her head as she kept putting the plates away. Their game night had winded down but only after an intense game of UNO that ensued with Joey Howard changing the rules that a typical quick game became a two hour ordeal. A long agonizing game had left the friend group tired. Everyone had already left and the people who remained were helping clean up the mess from earlier that night.“I am so tired,” Kayla announced as she walked into the kitchen, placing her arms around her boyfriend and resting her head on his shoulder. She smiled contentedly as Zac stopped putting the dishes away, wrapping his arms around her and swaying in content with her. She let out a chuckle and burrowed her face into his chest, a picture of a couple in love and so open to announce their love. They had been dating for years and Hayley was envious of them. Zac was so open to telling the world about his girlfriend and he was so romantic with her. She had wished that she would have a love like that. She wanted to be open and public with her partner but she knew she couldn’t.Most couples could pronounce their love so publicly and no one bats an eye. Hayley does it, and it’s a whole ordeal. She just wanted to be open in loving her partner and didn’t want to care about the scrutiny of it all. Her love life was full of speculation and drama. The tabloids loved speculating about who she was dating and if anyone at all. Maybe one day she would have that or she just simply wouldn’t care about who knew who she was dating. At least her home was adorned with photographs and mementos of her partner and her, enjoying life together. Her refrigerator was strewn with polaroids of her friends but also her partner. She had a polaroid that was her ultimate favorite and she treasured it above all. It was Taylor holding Alf, her dog and smiling at the camera. She knew how rare a smile of Taylor’s was to be photographed and so she held it close to her. How lucky she was to have that photo and him being so genuinely happy.Another polaroid that was displayed on their fridge was probably one of the most romantic photos she had of the both of them. It was her and Taylor walking around in the picturesque sunset beach of New Zealand. The soft golden hues of the setting sun paint a breathtaking backdrop as they walk hand in hand along the shoreline, their feet leaving imprints in the wet sand. Taylor, with his tall and lean frame, wearing a casual white button-down shirt rolled up to his elbows, a rare color to be worn by him but he was relaxed and happy that day. Hayley was wearing a flowy yellow summer dress, her blonde hair cascading down her shoulders. As they strolled along the beach, their steps sync in perfect harmony, showcasing the deep connection between them.Zac had been an awkward third wheel but didn’t mind because he took pictures of the beach in picturesque New Zealand but also a rare photo of the couple. Taylor and Hayley’s faces radiated joy and love, their smiles mirroring the serenity of the ocean waves. Taylor's gentle gaze was fixated on Hayley, as if she was the only thing that existed in the world. By Taylor’s logic, she was the only thing that existed for him. His sole purpose was to make Hayley happy and try his best to do everything in his power to make her happyHayley's eyes sparkled with adoration, conveying a sense of fulfillment and contentment in Taylor's presence. When she was with Taylor, she felt fulfilled. She felt as if there was nothing in this world that made sense like Taylor and her did. She had spent so much of her life wondering if she would ever be in love with someone like she had seen in her grandparents and she realized that he was just four feet away from her for about 15 years. How naive and dumb she was, not realizing that the love of her life was just feet away from her.Hayley smiled softly and went to go find Taylor, finding him in the backyard chasing Alf around. He was laughing as Alf sped faster and faster, Hayley smiled and opened the back door, “You guys are so cute,” She chuckled as she walked into the yard.Taylor looked at her and smiled softly, walking up to her and hugging her tightly before placing a soft kiss on her forehead. Hayley smiled softly and held onto him tighter, she felt comfortable and at ease, more so than she ever had in her life.“You know home for me has always been such a strange word for me,” Hayley said as she was engrossed in an embrace by Taylor, “I have spent so many years searching for a home that feels comfortable. I realize that it’s not a place but rather a person. Taylor, you are my home. I am at most comfort when I am with you…I am so lucky, I love you so much,” She said.Taylor smiled softly and looked at her, placing a soft kiss on her lip.“You are my home Hayley, no matter where we go, where we travel…you are the only thing to me that matters in my life. You and Alf,” He chuckled and looked at her, “I want forever with you. I want you to be my home always. Let’s get married.”She looked up at Taylor, “Okay sure,” She said in a half hearted chuckle. Taylor shook his head and pulled up a small rose gold ring with a beautiful pink moissanite diamond, “I have had this ring in my pocket for the last month…thinking of the best possible time to ask you. I wanted to do something so big and grand for us but….this is a good time as ever. I want forever with you. I want to be with you as your partner in crime, best friend, songwriting partner. I want to fight with you, love you and spend every waking moment with you. I know that we can’t be as open about us as you’d like but in our home, none of that matters. Hayley, I can’t spend another waking moment without making you my wife. Let’s get married. In fact, let’s get married here in our backyard.”Hayley’s eyes swelled up with tears, she had never thought someone could genuinely feel that way about her or love her so much. She felt so lucky, she had spent so long looking for someone who loved her, who wanted her and wanted to help her despite it all. She felt lucky having Taylor in her life as her partner in crime. She didn’t know what else would be better than being at home with Taylor and their dog.“Yes, I’ll marry you,” She smiled softly as Taylor began to put the ring on her finger, kissing her again.“Forever?” Taylor smiled softly as he finished placing her ring on her finger.“Forever.”
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Losing someone is incredibly tough, the absence of their body in this world is felt. You can
feel
that. Mourning is an incredibly complex thing, it can be full of rage some days when all you want to do is yell at the world for taking them. Why not me? Other days it’s full of sorrow. On those days, the only thing you want to do is crawl under your sheets and just cry it out. Nothing helps those days though, not even your best friends who just want what’s best for you.
“C’mon Taylor, you have to get out of bed,” Zac encouraged him as he grabbed the sheets from his bed. Taylor groaned and shook his head, holding tightly onto his blankets.
“I don’t want to get up, it’s totally useless,” He cried and shook his head. Zac sighed and shook his head, “Taylor, you have to for your family. Do you think that your daughter would want you just to stay in bed all day? No, she wants to see you and play with you.”
Taylor knew that he was right but he didn’t want to. Everyday was harder for him to cope, he didn’t know what to do. Suddenly, a curly haired green eyed toddler came into his bedroom, jumping on his bed before falling on top of Taylor.
She looked at Taylor softly and smiled, hugging him tightly before screeching, “Park!” She yelled and engulfed him in a hug. Her smile was infectious, Taylor knew that at three years old Scout would become something big like her mom one day. She was the perfect mixture of the two, she had Taylor’s sweet attitude and all of Hayley’s spunk. Truly the perfect combination of the two. When Hayley and Taylor found out that they were expecting, they were over the moon. Hayley had infertility issues since her late 20’s and they hadn’t really been trying when she found out she was pregnant. All Hayley ever wanted was to have a child with the man she loved. She loved Taylor till the end of time and she swore she would love him till her very last breath.
“Shall we go to the park?” Taylor asked Scout, as she climbed over his body, trying to get him out of bed. Scout smiled enthusiastically and nodded, getting off of him and jumping on the bed before screeching out of happiness. Zac chuckled, “See, she is so excited to spend time with her dad. She loves you and she needs you.” Taylor nodded in agreement, “I need to get up and be a good dad and husband. There is no use in moping around.”
Zac gave him a sad smile before going to help Scout prepare for the day. It was a beautiful sunny day, a perfect day for a picnic. So as Taylor finally showered after a week of not doing so, Zac packed a picnic basket for them. It was filled with all the sweetest desserts and lots of coloring books to keep Scout occupied. She could be restless just like her mother and Zac knew that.
Taylor put on his signature black t-shirt, black jeans and black vans before heading downstairs to Scout and Zac. Scout smiled happily, “Mommy said she would meet us at the park!”
Taylor gave her a smile and grabbed her small chubby hands, “Let’s go then. You know how mommy gets.”
Zac held up the picnic basket, “I brought food for all of us! I get hungry and so does Zac.” For the first time in a while, Taylor smiled. It was a genuine smile and it felt so weird to do once again. They got in the car, driving to the outskirts of town before they reached the luscious beautiful fields. Zac got Scout out of her booster seat, before she took off running yelling for Hayley.
“So. Much. Energy,” Zac chuckled. Taylor grabbed the picnic basket, “Yes just like her mom. We should go meet up with Scout. I am sure she’s just excited to get out of the house.”
Zac and Taylor trudged behind Scout, meeting her at Hayley's tombstone. Zac grabbed the blanket that was inside the picnic basket and laid it out for them as Scout began to tell Hayley all of the four year old drama going on in her life. She had no issue talking to her, she still felt her presence.
For Taylor, it was a little different. Maybe if she had died under different circumstances would he feel a little better. His life was full of regret but his biggest one was not protecting Hayley.
“And then we get to go home!”Hayley smiled softly and snuggled into Taylor’s chest before getting ready for their show later that evening. Taylor smiled softly and kissed the top of her head, “I feel a small little one coming to join us.”
“Mommy! Daddy! I want to go home! I want to see Alf!” Scout smiled as Hayley hugged Scout tightly.
“Soon, you’re going to spend time with Uncle Joey before we are done. Mommy and Daddy have a meet and greet,” She assured Scout as she played with her curls before getting up and getting ready for the meet and greet.
Now that Taylor thought about it, the air felt eerie, it was too quiet on an usually busy day. He barely remembered any of the details. All he remembered was Hayley smiling at the fan, introducing herself before getting shot in the chest. Taylor could’ve been more vigilant, he could’ve done so much more. He could’ve protected her. She would’ve been alive maybe. He lost his best friend. He missed her more than life itself, she was his reason but without her, his reason was their daughter.
Taylor couldn’t even remember why they decide to shoot Hayley, he just knew that was the day he stopped living and breathing. His life was full of sorrow, he was full of sorrow. Life was dull without her. It was gray.
“Daddy, I think Mommy is happy that we’re here because there’s a rainbow!” She smiled happily as she ate her sandwich.
She was right, a rainbow appeared above their heads as they ate their lunch together. Maybe it was a sign from Hayley letting him know that it would be okay. Taylor looked up at the rainbow and fiddled with his wedding ring, “I love you.”
The rainbow intensified and he could feel that it was her way of saying same. He had to. Scout smiled softly at her dad and tumbled him into a gigantic bear hug, “Monster hug!”
