Chapter 1: Kami-sama “Kami, it’s time for you to wake up.”It was one of those dreams again. The kind where you think you’re awake, but you’ve actually just been sleeping this whole time. Sometimes it feels like a lifetime. Yet once you open your eyes and look around, you have a hard time deciphering the truth from the imagination.I had parents, siblings, friends, a life. I remember entire TV shows and movies, not to mention books and other trivia. Yet, it all felt so ‘distant’ once my groggy brain started waking up. Then there was… Emptiness. A dark void. As if I had no past, as if I was just ‘created’ on a whim somehow. Or maybe I was just naturally formed into this world? Could also just be amnesia…When I opened my eyes, I saw a simple white ceiling. I was laying on a comfortable white bed. I looked over at the pure white walls that surrounded me in every direction. It wasn’t a big space. Rather than a bedroom, it was more like a prison cell.I stood up a little wobbly and walked over to the black door on the wall. It was kind of ominous, but I felt the urge to turn the handle. I’m not sure whether it was instinct or muscle memory. Before I realized it, I was already standing in the middle of another room. This time, there was a desk and a chair.“Shouldn’t I have to piss?” I looked down and saw a pale, smooth flat chest, belly, crotch… I couldn’t remember what I was…“I should be a man, right?” I ‘asked’ myself and when I looked back at my body again, I had a penis. Not just that, but a muscular chest, abs, my arms and shoulders were also thick. I don’t remember ever being in this good of shape. I was also kind of hairy. But then I wasn’t.“Oh my God… What the fuck is this shit?” Finally I thought about being a sexy woman and my pecs turned to breasts, my abs became less defined, my hips wider, my black pubes disappeared along with all other body hair. But the black hair dangled down across my nipples, which were surprisingly sensitive.“This is definitely the dream, right?” I calmed down a bit and smiled wryly. I couldn’t tell reality from imagination. Because in this place, at least for me, there wasn’t that big of a difference.Even a dream has ‘some’ rules though. I walked over to the desk and sat down. My body became ‘neutral’ once again. And a bit childish. At least I didn’t feel very large. I felt a bit small sitting in that huge black chair, sitting at that large desk and waiting for something to happen. Waiting for someone to tell me what the fuck I was supposed to do…“Okay then.” I didn’t feel any normal urges or desires. I wasn’t horny, hungry, thirsty, tired, nothing, just bored and lonely.I got up off the office chair and walked over to the wall, which transformed into a mirror, reflecting my neutral appearance. I looked like a child. But then I remembered growing up and my body expanded rapidly. Soon I was a tall, handsome man with a short black beard, brown eyes, long black hair and rippling muscles that I definitely didn’t deserve.“So weird.” As I said that, my appearance changed back to that tall, busty and gorgeous woman. All the facial and body hair vanished, only leaving that long black hair behind…“Wait, if I can imagine anything, then why…” I finally noticed something. My skin color and tone wouldn’t change. Neither would my hair… As if I was just using two presets rather than simply imagining things and turning them into reality.“I think I get it now.” I really didn’t. But no one was there to talk shit or correct me anyway.I breathed a long sigh and wondered why I still needed to breathe in the first place? I tried holding my breath and couldn’t suffocate, no matter how long I waited. It was still very uncomfortable though.“Phew~! Weird.” Looking at myself in the mirror again, my sexy feminine body ‘preset’ was covered by some simple clothes. White panties, short black low-cut dress, no shoes because it was unnecessary. This soft white floor could never hurt my feet. I remembered the desk only being a flat surface with four legs in the beginning. Very strange.So anyway, I opened the top drawer and raised an eyebrow in surprise. It was a comic book. Like a real, physical comic book. I don’t think I’ve ever even read one before. I grew up in the internet age after all. Why pay money for a physical copy when you can read online for free, right?I placed the book on my desk and looked at the cover. It was a teenage girl. Typical cute anime girl appearance. I guess it was a Manga. She had big pale-indigo eyes, messy blonde hair, wearing a white dress shirt, a short and pleated black skirt, but most importantly… Almost as if it was a part of her body, she was holding a violin against her neck. Playing a song of some sort.“After the storm~ has passed, I looked up to the sky~! That brilliant blue~! A bittersweet goodbye~! I remember how we laughed, it always makes me smile…”I could hear the music playing all around me. I could hear her voice as she sang and played her violin.“Among a million stars~ a single love is born~! A burning light~ to last the test of time~! When the winter turns to spring and today into the next, it’s a symphony of each and every dream~!”I turned the page and started reading. A little girl who fell in love with music. She wanted to perform on stage and share her music with the world… And she did. But then she got sick. Then she got sicker. She met the boy who inspired her to become a musician. Helped him overcome his trauma, helped him return to the stage and recover…“We were walking side by side, just a single step away… I wish I could recall, what had made us laugh at all. How I miss~ the magic of those ordinary days~…”Then she… Needed surgery. The odds of success weren’t that low. But they weren’t that high either. It was a coin toss. But she would rather take the chance than wither away a little more slowly.“Even now, it’s still all so clear and your voice is the music I hear… You are still the orange of the sunset in my dreams…”I saw my tears dripping down onto the page. It’s so weird. Why am I crying? Why am I sniffling even though I don’t even need to breathe? My stomach feels upset, even if I can’t feel hunger. My throat was dry, yet I don’t have thirst.“I just really wish that you were here, ‘cause inside my dreams it’s not enough…” I started singing subconsciously, “To hear your voice once more, that’s all I’m asking for… We’ll pick up our duet, ‘cause it can’t be finished yet… *Sniffle*”“I just really wish that you were here, to compose another memory~!” I could hear the boy singing as he played the piano, “I promise when I find I’m missing you, I’ll play…”“Our symphony…” I muttered and closed the book. There was a teenage girl. Fair skin, blonde hair, indigo eyes, a small nose, a beautiful smile. At first a little inhuman, but then I blinked my teary eyes and she became more ‘realistic’. At least I could tell that she was a human now and not an Anime character. After all, Anime or Manga faces are actually based on ‘cats’, not humans, so some of the features will always be a bit strange if translated into a more realistic setting…“Hello? Are you okay?”“Yeah, I’m fine. Thanks.” I didn’t need to sniffle anymore. I looked back down at the book and it was replaced by a piece of paper, “Your name is Kaori, your surname is Miyazono, correct?”“Yep~!” She replied with a smile and leaned forward, trying to read the paper upside down, “What is this anyway? Are you Kami-sama?”“Umm…” I nodded with an awkward smile, “Yes, I suppose I am, Kami. That’s what my parents named me at least…”“Wow! So even Kami-sama has parents?!” She stood up out of her seat and I could see the short pleated black skirt below her white short-sleeved dress shirt. I quickly looked back up at those big indigo eyes as she grinned at me while putting her hands on ‘my’ desk casually, “You’re judging me, right?”“Judging?” I looked back down at the piece of paper, which had a bunch of random pieces of information on it, “Maybe?”[Seven Virtues]

Maybe you’re the ‘Kami-sama’ and you’re supposed to send ‘me’ somewhere?”“But you said your parents named you Kami!” She retorted and sat down on the side of the desk, snatching the A4 paper from my hands, “What is this?! Who wrote this?!”“No clue.” I shrugged and watched her crumpling up the sides of the paper in anger, “I’m surprised your Wrath score was only ranked ‘Decent’.”“Humility just says ‘lol’! Wait, Seven Sins too?! I am kind of hungry… Lust…” I could see the side of her face blushing really hard as she read that part, “What’s wrong with being a Musician?! So what if I’m proud to be a musician?! Are you going to send me to hell because I like music?!”“Like I said, I have no idea whether you qualify for Heaven or Hell. Or whether I have the power to send you there or anywhere really.” I just shrugged and looked up at her pouting face while leaning back on my chair with my arms folded, “Where do you ‘want’ to go? Where do you think you deserve to be?”“I… I want to go home.” That cheerful teenage girl was still smiling, but for some reason it hurt even more to watch. She handed the paper back to me and casually laid down across the desk, closing her eyes and speaking much more calmly, “I just want to go home. I want to wake up… I… I was in surgery. I remember it hurting a lot. Then it was just numbness everywhere. I thought I would be fine with it. I knew for a long time that I wouldn’t survive much longer… A slow, painful death as my body failed me. So I took a chance and… Now I’m here.”“You died.” I sighed and watched the tear running down the side of her left eye, falling onto my black table and dying it… Blue. Such a powerful, depressing emotion of sadness. I could almost taste it in the air. No, I could taste it. Although it didn’t feel good, the saltiness did give me a certain thirst. Make me feel a bit more ‘alive’ than before.“Enough about me!” Although she was still sad, the cute girl rolled over onto her side and used her arm as a pillow, sniffling a bit before smiling again, “Tell me about yourself, Kami-sama. What kind of music do you like?”“There isn’t much to tell. I was just a guy. I grew up in a loving family. I had some friends. I remember there being a few crushes that I never acted on…” When I said that part, I could ‘see’ the boy she was thinking about in her mind, “But then I graduated High School. Got a shitty job that I hated, which didn’t even pay well. Finally, I remember… I finally moved out of my parent’s house. And then I woke up here. A few hours ago.”“Wait, wait-wait-wait~!” She quickly sat up and looked at me seriously, “Why does it sound like you died too?!”“It does sound like I died, huh?”I nodded seriously, but for some reason, I didn’t feel too upset about it. Or maybe this weird inhuman form of mine isn’t capable of normal emotions or feelings? I’m just like a… Mirror. Is that something new though? Maybe I’ve always been this way? Just that I was human before and now, I’m… A ghost.“Like I said before. Maybe I’m the spirit being judged and you’re the Kami-sama?”“Hahaha~! No way~!” She immediately shook her head and waved her hand, sitting on my desk with one leg dangling down and swinging. That dainty foot pressed against my seat and rolled my chair backwards a little bit, then pulled me forward, “Hey, you’re shrinking!”“I’m just nervous.” I snickered and my body was already a lot smaller, taking that more neutral form once again. I was still wearing a t-shirt and jeans though. My clothes seemed to fit my body no matter the size.“Don’t boys usually grow when they see a beautiful girl sitting on their desk?” Kaori grumbled for a moment, then giggled and reached out to squeeze my cheeks, “Aww, but you’re so cute~!”“Thanks?” I didn’t stop her from playing with my cheeks. It felt… Warm and comfortable. The desk suddenly turned pinkish purple and I was a little surprised, “Did you do something just now?”“Do what?” She also looked down at the desk in confusion, “I didn’t do anything, right? I just realized that your desk changes colors! So cute! Did I hit a button somewhere?”“I don’t think it’s a button. The last time, you cried and the table turned blue.” I sniffed the air and licked my lips curiously, “This time it tastes a little sweeter, but still pretty salty.”“You! Perverted Kami!” She actually slapped me in the face while blushing! Then the table turned more reddish-pink… This time I tasted a bit of blood in my mouth. But there weren’t any wounds. There was only a very faint ‘pain’ and shock from the slap… It felt pretty good. Almost like I was human again.“Rather than bodily fluids, I think it’s more likely that the table reacts to intense emotions.” I calmly explained to the girl who was sitting back on her chair again and drooling onto the table slowly. The color did change, but from red to purple, then blue, then purple again.“Look at this paper.”“When did you add colors?” She took her simple ‘judgment sheet’ back again. Then muttered, “So Diligence and Sloth are both blue. Patience and Wrath are red, Abstinence and Gluttony are pink, Kindness and Envy are green, Chastity and Lust are purple, Liberality and Greed are gold, and finally, Humility and Pride are both white…”“Apparently.” I nodded and spat on the table, but it didn’t react to me at all. Just sucked up the juices and absorbed them instantly. Looking just as clean and clear as before. Still purplish-blue, a mixture of maybe curious lust and bored sloth?“That makes sense.” She nodded and handed the paper back to me, “So you still haven’t told me yet. What kind of music do you like, Kami-chan?”“A little bit of everything, probably.” I shrugged and took the paper, placing it back inside the drawer where that comic book originated. There was nothing inside of there. Just a small, empty drawer.“Do you have any instruments we can play? You look like a pianist!” She giggled and was stunned when a familiar brown violin appeared in her left hand, “Wow! So cool! Awesome!”In her right hand appeared a bow, so she immediately started testing out to see whether it was tuned properly, “It doesn’t even need to be tuned!”“Nice.” I gave her a thumbs up and snickered, “Unfortunately, I don’t have any instruments on me. I’m a pretty good singer though. I vaguely remember playing a bit of everything, but never really had the time or patience to ‘master’ any instruments. Mainly just liked to sing because I didn’t need to fool with anything.”“It’s just the two of us trapped in this weird afterlife together, Kami-chan. But as long as we have Music, we’ll always be free!” Kaori grinned and started playing a familiar melody. It was an old song from probably before I was born. It starts off with piano and moves into electric guitar, with drums, et cetera.“Cry alone~ I’ve gone away~ no more nights~ no more pain~! I’ve gone alone~, took all my strength~, I’ve made the change~, I won’t see you tonight! Sorrow~! Sank deep inside my blood~! All the ones around me, I cared for~ and loved…”The more I sang, the more I remembered my parents, my brothers and sisters. My family together… And the whole world around us turned dark blue. Kaori was crying, but she kept playing with her eyes closed, no longer sitting down. The desk and chairs were gone. We were standing on a strange stage in front of countless shadowy figures in the darkness. Those eyes were like a starry sky, various different colors in the abyssal depths.“It’s building up, inside of me~! A place so dark, so cold~, I had to set me free~! Don’t mourn for me~, you’re not the one~ to place the blame~, as bottles call my name~, I won’t see you tonight~!”Kaori also opened her eyes and widened them in shock, but she still started singing along with me after that, “Sorrow~, sank deep inside my blood~! All the ones around me~, I cared for~ and most of all~ I loved~! But I can’t see myself that way~! Please don’t forget me~! Or cry~, while I’m~ away~!”Then she had a violin solo! And we started lifting up out of the depths of the abyss and into the bright blue sky!“Cry alone~! I’ve gone away~! No more nights~! No more pain~! I’ve gone alone~! Took all my strength~! But I’ve made the change~! I won’t see you tonight~!”We flew up out of the atmosphere and saw the bright blue moon, literally blue. Even when we landed on the dusty surface, it looked like the depths of the ocean again! There were countless colossal, twisting and writhing figures in the distance! Massive tendrils broke through the ground and sent huge plums of dirt, dust and rocks up into space due to the low gravity…“So~ far~ away~, I’ve gone~! Please~! Don’t follow~ me~ tonight~! And while I’m gone~! Everything with be~ alright~!”She started playing another violin solo and amazing enough, it sounded like a duet! With a distant piano playing, echoing amidst the chaotic screams and roars that surrounded us! As the piano solo and the drumming of the moon got louder, the reality around us cracked apart!“No more breath inside~! Essence left my heart tonight~! No more breath inside~! Essence left my heart tonight~!” As I sang out with all of my strength, the two of us appeared on a magnificent golden stage! There were tens of thousands of people singing along as we finished the last part of the song.“Woah~ oh oh~ oooh~ yeah~! Oooh oh ohhhh~! Woah oh oooh~! Woah~ oh oh~ oooh~ yeah~! Oooh oh ohhhh~! Woah oh oooh~!”In the cheers and applause, the two of us bowed and I looked over to the side of the stage, where I saw some familiar faces smiling back at me. Chapter 2: The Gateway to Samsara Reincarnation“That was awesome~! Thank you so much~!” The short girl hugged my face into her small, sweaty chest and I hugged her back. Fortunately I didn’t have a dick at that moment, so it wasn’t embarrassing. I still looked like a short genderless child. Probably why she felt so comfortable with me?“I’m happy if you’re happy. Literally.” I honestly felt joy and excitement. It was really nice. I felt like a ‘person’ instead of a weird newborn eldritch deity of some sort.The scenery had already changed back to my ‘office’. Which was just a blank white room, with a simple black desk and two chairs in the middle of it. On one side was a black door, which led to my ‘bedroom’, which literally only had a bed and nothing else.“Ah, sorry, haha~!” She finally realized what she was doing and pushed me away with a blushing face, “I get a little too excited sometimes. Please forgive me, Kami-sama!” Then she actually bowed to me seriously. Well, she’s ‘Japanese’ and it’s pretty normal/polite to bow. It didn’t feel awkward at least.“It’s not a big deal.” I shrugged and wiped the sweat off my face with my right hand. But most of it was just ‘absorbed’ into my body. It felt very interesting. I’m wondering if I’m some kind of amorphous slime monster on the inside?“I think I’m ready now.” Kaori smiled wryly and breathed out a long sigh, with her violin and bow disappearing into white specs of light, “Go ahead and do it! I’m ready to pass on!”I looked behind her back and saw that a big black gateway suddenly appeared on the wall. It was a huge double-door, at least five meters high. When it appeared, the whole white room seemed to get larger in response. There was a big white ∞ symbol across the two black doors. Shining brightly.“I wouldn’t go through that door.” I warned the silly girl, but she just giggled and ran over to try pushing it open!“Ugh~! It won’t budge!” She sighed and turned to me, “Kami-sama, what’s wrong? Isn’t this the door to the afterlife?”“I mean… Maybe?” I shrugged, then walked over to the side, looking closely inside the middle of the left hoop of the Infinity symbol, “I see something. It looks like… Japanese?”“Let me see!” She clung next to my right side and read aloud in English, “If you were to be reborn anew, what kind of world would please you?”“Oh wait, look, it says ‘The Gateway to Samsara Reincarnation’ in fine print over here.” I pointed to the side, “This path doesn’t lead to heaven or hell, it’s obviously some kind of reincarnation service. Are you sure you want-”“I choose a world full of fun and adventure! A world with lots of wonderful people who love music as much as I do! I want to be reborn with a healthy body! I want to-” Before she could finish speaking, she was swallowed up by blinding light! Then the door disappeared when I opened my eyes again…“Well… Good luck, Kaori. Kami-sama blesses you, heheh…” I shook my head and sighed. Then I walked back over to my desk and smiled wryly, “I guess… Now I just wait for the next one to appear?”When I opened that first drawer again, I frowned. There was another comic book. But the picture on the front was still that beautiful young woman with blonde hair, indigo eyes, pale skin and a wonderful smile. I picked it up and placed it on the desk, looking at the name on the cover.“Kaori.” There was no last name anymore. Not necessarily a good sign. I opened the first page and it was the girl being born to a loving mother. No father was around, but the two of them were very close. Then her mother got sick and died. Fortunately she was lucky enough to be born with an incredibly healthy body. And strong too. Superhumanly strong.When she was a teenager, she beat up some gangsters who had knives and even old-timey pistols. She used a violin that she could conjure out of thin air. Everything was actually pretty good. She had friends and extended family members. The Kingdom of Elegia was literally called the Kingdom of Music. A whole island nation where everyone loved and celebrated music in various ways. Then the whole fucking country was destroyed and everyone died except for two people. And Kaori didn’t ‘wish’ for a Protagonist Halo.“Kami-sama…” I looked up at the young woman who was sniffling and crying, “Sorry… I’m sorry for wasting your gift like that…”“I wouldn’t call it ‘wasting’.” I sighed and walked over to her side, growing into a tall, muscular man and hugging her tightly into my arms, “I didn’t have time to read the last part.”“Last part?” Kaori looked up from my chest and sniffled, “What last part? What are you talking about?”“I wanted to warn you…” I snickered, “The door. Remember? I was reading the fine print and you cut me off. It said ‘The Gateway to Samsara Reincarnation Trial’. The ‘Trial’ part is pretty damn important, right?”“Wait! That… Then that was just some kind of ‘test’?! My friends and family in that life weren’t real?!” Rather than being upset that they all died, the scarier thing was that they never existed in the first place, “Please tell me you’re kidding!”“I never said they weren’t real.” I shook my head, “They were as real as you are… But they also really died. Sorry. You’re the only one that showed up here. I have no idea what happened to all those other souls.”“It’s… It’s okay, Kami-sama.” Kaori sniffled and rubbed her face into my chest, getting my white shirt wet with her tears and snot, “I’m sorry… I’m sorry for leaving you.”“You don’t have to apologize. You were ‘ready’ to move on.” I sighed and rubbed her back gently, “It’s probably my job to send you on your way. But I don’t really know how.”“Don’t! I don’t want to leave! Please, don’t… Just, let me stay here for a while, okay?” She looked up at me with big indigo eyes and then blew her nose on my chest, “Umm, sorry.”“It’s okay. It doesn’t taste that weird.” Yes, I could taste all the liquids that came in contact with my clothing. I could also feel sensations as if she was touching my skin directly, which was kind of jarring at first, but now it feels almost natural.“You can taste my snot?!” She freaked out and blushed harder, “Kami-sama… Were you watching me that whole time?”“Watching what? When you prayed to me that night with the flute-”“Stop! Don’t say it! It’s so embarrassing!” She pushed me away and complained, “If you were watching me all those years, then why didn’t you ever say anything? Or ‘do’ anything? My Mom…”“What could I say or do?” I sighed, brought her back to her chair and sat her down, “For you, it’s been eighteen years. For me, it’s only been a couple minutes. I only had time to wish you the best, sit down and then a comic book appeared, just like the last time you died. I read it in a few seconds and you were already crying in front of me.”“That… Sorry. Sorry for blaming you, Kami-sama.” She looked even more embarrassed as she stared down at her smooth thighs. She was still only about 5’2”, her breasts were a little bigger, but she didn’t really look that much more mature to be honest. This time she was wearing some pink pajamas, because she was basically sleeping at home, in bed, when the country was destroyed abruptly. She didn’t die instantly due to her powerful physique from the One Piece World, but it really didn’t take long.“It’s okay, you still expect way too much of me. I haven’t even been awake that long.” I smiled wryly and opened the drawer again, pulling out a familiar A4 Paper.
