Work Text

Dream fell to the grassy floor, heaving in breath after breath of stale, sad air-- he felt as though he hadn't taken a breath in 500 years. He pushed himself up and looked around. The sky was a dark red, fading into a softer red on the horison, and the sun was setting. (wasn't the sky supposed to be blue?) The grass around him was dry and brown. (wasn't the grass supposed to be full and green?) Right in front of him he saw the stump of a tree. (wasn't the tree supposed to be tall and beautiful?) There were remnants of terror-grief-anger in the air, making it hard to breath. (or maybe that was just the smoke.)Dream felt awful. Somewhere, in the back of his mind, he knew that this-- whatever this was-- was his fault. It was the consiquence of his own actions. He turned around to see a smouldering village just a little ways down the hill, though Dream felt that the fire should have died out long ago.He took a deep breath and choked on the foul-tasting air, diving into a couching fit. He could FEEL the negativity in the back of his throat and feel the smoke creeping into his lungs. He scoured his memory for anything-- anything-- to help him, to explain what was happening. What happened. But he came up blank. He could only faintly remember feelings and experiences, though three things stuck out.He was the Guardian of Positivity, his name was Dream, and he had a brother. (well, a twin, but his brother always felt older, more mature, than him.)The next question was: where was his brother? He felt like they always stuck together. That they were always in ear-shot of each other.Dream took in a shallower breath this time and started looking around. He was sure he could find him. He was sure he could find his brother. They were always in ear-shot of the other, maybe if he called his name?Dream opened his mouth to yell, before he realized that he didn't know what to shout. He didn't remember his brother's name, not even what he looked like. Not where they lived, not what they wore, not where they were, not-- not who they were.Dream tried anyway."BROTHER?" he yelled."BROTHER??" he asked, drawing out the "r.""BROTHER?""BROTHER, WHERE ARE YOU??"Dream called sixteen more times before moving into the village. He felt like the village was dangerous, (not just because of the fires everywhere, no, it was something else,) and he walked through the rows and rows of houses and shops cautiously, keeping an eye out for anything that moved.(he felt scared. he knew that it was wrong, but he felt scared, and he didn't know what to do.)Dream took a deep breath."BR-" He broke down in a fit of coughs and fell to the gravel road, curling in on himself. The emotions in the village echoed less, but they were so much more personal. He could distinctly FEEL that the man who lived just two houses away from where Dream stood died in his daughter's arms trying to protect her. He could FEEL that the old lady across the village felt only regret for not accepting her child for who they were before she died. He could FEEL that two little kids were playing ball together right in front of where Dream stood, so, so happy, before they saw whatever was coming and died struggling to reach each other.Dream still didn't know why, but he knew that what had happened to these people was his fault.(he was so, so scared. he just wanted his brother. he didn't know what was happening, or why, and that only fueled his fear. he felt like a lonely, lost child.)"B-brother?" he called into the village. The village full only of emotions. He couldn't FEEL anyone, not even animals.Dream was alone, and he knew that it was his fault.(for his first night back, it was an awful one. he would never tell, but he cried while he ran from the mess he had created.)Dream lay on the floor, staring at the red sky. (he was crying, still, but he would never admit it. besides, who was there to see?)He knew he had a brother. He knew he was the Gardian of Positivity. What else did he know?He knew...He knew FEELings. He could remember feelings, and that was about it. His lastest "memories" were full of guilt-sadness-greif, and the tiniest further back he could remember protectiveness-disbelief-fear.The more he tried to "remember," the more concerned he felt about the life he lead before. Through his past emotions he could conclude that he, very often, was worried. About who, Dream could only guess. His brother, maybe? Through his past emotions he could also conclude that this, having barely any memories, was not a normal occurance. That meant that whatever had made the sky and the grass wrong had most likely erased his memories. That meant that whatever had made the sky and the grass wrong had most likely taken his brother. That meant that whatever had made the sky and the grass wrong was most likely dangerous. That meant that his brother was in danger, and was most likely hurt.Dream had to find him. He had to SAVE him. He had to.He didn't know what would happen if he didn't.
