"what's a miracle?" freddie asks them one day.
"captain cook," replies roger, thinking of new horizons to be explored and new places to be discovered. he thinks of leaving what he knows behind and going out into the unknown, abandoning familiar comfort for the hope of something novel. he thinks of being written about in history books and being hailed as a public hero, but not for staying in one place for his whole life.
"cain and abel," replies john, thinking of knives in backs and fraternal betrayal. he thinks about how cain and abel must have been so close, so loving, before one declared that he was not the other's keeper and returned him to dust over something as unimportant as envy.
"jimi hendrix," replies brian, through with thinking about his failed marriage and his failed family and his failed band and his failed career and his failed life, instead opting to think about nothing but what cool sounds he can make with his guitar so he doesn't lose his mind entirely.
"the tower of babel," freddie thinks to himself. he thinks about how such an immense combined effort must have culminated in something so marvelous, and he thinks of how everything fell apart when the ability for communication was lost. he thinks of how nothing was ever the same again.
and admittedly, he feels corny when he writes the lyrics down. none of it really fits together, but it is queen, after all. it sounds like a rallying cry and not anything that anyone would ever want to play on the radio. but it is queen, after all.
the time will come, one day, you'll see, when we can all be friends…
