Work Text

The sleeping mastiff woke up to the muffled sound of the train moving. He was listening to music before he fell asleep, and It seemed like it turned off after a while. Just before he could turn the music back on, he was approached by a blue cat in a plaid red sweater."Excuse me, may I ask you a quick question?"Before the half awake mastiff could respond, the cat asked, "What time is it?""7... 7:32" He had to check his phone."I was right! I thought my watch was off. Mind if I sit across from you?"The dog was feeling a little lonely and homesick, so he agreed to the company."My name is Rover by the way, I thought I should mention it""I'm Bodi, sir" He cringed as he called the cat sir. It was a hard habit to break from when he was more sheltered. Some time passed before Rover asked another question. "Where's your stop?""Lemon Grove"The cat thought for a minute, then said "I don't think I've heard of it"Before they could discuss it further, the train stopped at the town. They said their goodbyes and Bodi got off the train, ready for his new life. The air was cold, but nothing he wasn't used to. He hadn't really thought out what he would do when he got to the new town, so he decided to look around and see if he could get a place to stay. After some wandering around, he found a small cafe. It was around this time that he made a groundbreaking discovery: he hadn’t eaten anything today. As he walked in, the smell of freshly brewed coffee danced in the air, pleasantly playing with his nose. The cafe seemed relatively empty, which was reasonable for a cafe this late at night. He went to the bar and sat down, setting his acoustic guitar aside.“What can I get you?” A low but calming voice asked. The voice’s origin was a pigeon with small round glasses and formal barista clothing.“I’ll have…” He thought of what a cafe might have for food. “A bagel, and some tea, please”The pigeon boiled some water and grabbed a bagel with some cream cheese. When Bodi was done with his food, he took his tea in a to-go cup with him into the chill night. He went to check the time on his phone and realized that it was now 9. Luckily, he found Nook’s Homes. After a few minutes of talking with a Tanuki that he couldn’t tell was scamming him or not, he was now the proud owner of an apartment not that far away. On his way there, he heard beautiful music off in the distance. He walked in the direction of the sound in an almost trance like state, hypnotized by the beauty of the music. When he found the source of the music, he saw what he thought was a dog in a sweater with their hood up playing the guitar, but not singing. From what he could see of the dog, he definitely wanted to meet them. The mystery musician was on a wooden bench, only illuminated by the warm light of a streetlamp nearby.“Hey” Their voice was like a warm blanket on a cold day. “Want to join me?”Bodi was staring wasn’t he?“Uh, y-yeah sure. Sounds great”The mastiff sat next to the musician and got a closer look at him. The dog had white fur and beautiful dark brown eyes, like coffee. Again he was staring.“Haven't seen you before, are you new around here?”Bodi could feel himself blushing. He could not figure out why.“Yeah” He tried to hide his eagerness but utterly failed. “I just got here”Bodi listened to the white furred dog play, wanting to listen for forever.“You want to join?”Bodi replied, a little surprised, “How do you know I play guitar?”“You have yours with you. Unless that’s someone else’s”He totally forgot about his own guitar, and was embarrassed.“Oh, well, I actually have somewhere to be, so” He started going in the direction he thought his new home was. The other dog gave a small laugh, seeming to enjoy Bodi’s awkwardness. He realized while walking that he was wagging his tail the entire time with the new stranger.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

He made it. It took some time for Bodi to find his way to his apartment because all he could think about was the new stranger he met. He never felt this way before.

He was so exhausted from walking that he took no time to explore his new home and just layed down the blanket and pillow he brought with him and got ready for bed. It seemed that he wasn’t fully unprepared after all.  Despite his fatigue, he stayed up thinking of the snow furred guitarist.

He awoke early; his body still used to the routine he had when with his dad. He would’ve called his friends if it wasn’t so early, so he sent a text telling them about how he got lost and went for a jog.

The sun peaked out from the horizon, bathing the forest in golden light, thawing out the chill of the early morning. It took some time for his body to get used to the cold, aided by his jogging. He chose to have his morning run in the forest because he loved the crunch of the fallen leaves when he stepped on them.

After a while of running, Bodi decided to sit down next to a tree. He watched as the fiery leaves fell. It was calming. If only he had his guitar, the dance of the falling leaves gave him a great idea for a song. Thinking of guitars made him think of the attractive canine. Attractive?? No no no, boys can’t like other boys, he thought to himself. At least, that was what he assumed. He probably just wanted to be really good friends with the fellow guitarist. Yeah, that must be it.

He got up to start walking home, but his weak knees made it difficult.

Bodi completely forgot that he didn’t eat breakfast before his run, and was only reminded when his stomach started hurting.

The smell of coffee would never get old. Bodi saw that the cafe was more active than yesterday. Although, he was at a cafe at night. He sat at the bar.

Bodi ordered a plate of eggs and a cup of tea.

“That will be 500 bells” the pigeon cooed.

As Bodi handed over the money, he noticed something new. Well, new to him. He saw a small stage tucked away in the corner with a wooden stool and small microphone on it. It didn’t take long for someone to get on the stage, and Bodi recognized them. His face grew warm.

A cacophony of cheers, claps, and whistles came from the crowd that had seemed to grow since last Bodi looked that way. The musician started tuning his guitar, and the sound of the strings being plucked was enough to silence the eager crowd. After a minute or two of tuning, the dog spoke.

“Hey” his voice was calming, like a warm blanket.

“I heard a new song recently, and I want to give it a try”

The crowd cheered. Bodi could make out a single word the tangled mess of the crowd’s voice: “K.K.”. The strum of the guitar quieted the audience, and what followed was a familiar song. It was a song Bodi wrote. K.K. 's voice (or, who he thought was K.K.) was rustic and sounded like dark chocolate. Even better, he was singing Bodi’s song.

When the song was over and Bodi had eaten his food, he went to leave the cafe. He was startled when he felt a tap on his shoulder. When he saw who it was, he nearly fell over.

“I saw you in the crowd when I was playing” Bodi’s heart skipped a beat.

“I wanted to ask-” Did he just blush?

“I didn’t catch your name when we first met”

“Bodi” He responded quickly.

“My name’s Bodi”

“I’m sure you heard my name, but I’m K.K. Slider” They stood there awkwardly for a moment, not knowing what to say to each other.

Finally, K.K. broke the silence. “I wanted to ask if you wanted to have dinner. At my house.”

“Yes! I mean- yeah, sure”

“Does 6 work?”

“I’m free at 6”  It didn’t matter if he was or not, he would've said yes no matter what.

“I’ll see you then”

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Bodi didn't have much variety in his wardrobe. He did plan to go clothes shopping, but there was no time for that, so he picked out his usual blue sweater and took his guitar. It was 5:30 when Bodi decided to head out. The air had a nice chill in the air and gray clouds filled the horizon.KK didn't give him an address, but a list of directions. First, he had to start on the path he had his morning run. Then, he turned off the path at an oddly shaped stone, or, was it a tree stump?. He followed this for awhile until he saw a cozy cottage with a water wheel on the side, spinning slowly as the water from the near by river passed through it.When bodi got closer to the cottage, he saw an abundance of nature that surrounded it. The trees looked like little sunsets due to their autumn colors, accompanied by the dark green bushes. He went up to the door. It took him a minute to build up the courage to knock on the door. Every time he would try, he noticed that his shirt needed fixing, or that he had a hair out of place. He finally built up the confidence to knock on the door."One moment!" The sound of pots clanging together and footsteps followed the voice. The door swung openThere was flour on KK's nose, which Bodi found adorable. He was wearing black half circle glasses. Bodi felt his tail start to wag and couldn't take his eyes of the handsome dog. You would call a friend handsome right?KK interrupted Bodi's thoughts "Hey. Come in"The warmth of the cozy cottage comforted him, flooding him with memories of home. Bodi set his guitar down."I made spaghetti"KK led Bodi to the dining room, where a small table with two chairs sat. KK gestured to sit down."It smells amazing!" while taking a seat."Thanks for having me over"KK set down the two plates of spaghetti "My pleasure"It took Bodi all his will power to not scarf it down when he tried it, but he didn't want to embarrass himself in front of his new friend."So, why'd you move here?" KK asked."I don't know" He replied "I guess the big city got to be too much after a while" Bodi had a question of his own now. "When did you move here?""A long time ago" the snowy dog replied "I can't remember"After they finished eating, KK suggested that they played some song since Bodi brought his guitar. So, they spent a long time singing and playing random songs. They even made up a few. Each time KK sang, Bodi was too distracted by the dog's singing to play well."I should head home" the time was 12:36. He didn't really want to leave, but knew if he stayed any later he might fall asleep on the walk home."Isn't it raining?""It's just sprinkling" Bodi said as he opened the door to support his argument. Instead, it just proved that if he leaved that house Bodi would be soaking wet for the next 7 years."Why don't you spend the night?"Why didn't Bodi think of that? They decided to sleep on the couch and share a blanket. The rest of the night was spent cuddling each other, and all bodi could think was how he wanted this to last forever.
