Work Text
“I’m sorry it came to this,” the man sighs softly. “Truly, I am.”There’s no response – there never is. It’s always just him, talking to empty air and trying to apologise in the vain hope that the essence of his brother’s old quirk lingers so that the latest holder’s predecessors might hear him.He huffs a breath, reaching out to the cooling body beside him and places five fingers down to tag it. He’d rather not let Garaki get his hands on this one and the best way to ensure that was to know where it was. Damn the precognition quirk he picked up last century. When the distant wails of sirens begin to close in he finally stands, brushing debris off his torn suit. Absently, he flicks through his horde for a repair quirk and the awful sludge teleportation, activating them both and disappearing from the scene. Forty years later, when he wakes up after thinking himself to have truly died, he once again curses the precognition quirk he picked up in the last two centuries. Garaki is now vital to his survival, which in turn is vital so that he may see through his final purpose. In the back of his head his small group of various healing quirks strain against the restraints of his new ‘life support’ he has so graciously been fitted with. As if he can’t tell when his quirks are actively being suppressed. No matter. All this means is that the silent game of chess against the Good Doctor has just turned into a war. _.-~-._.-~-._.-~-._.-~-._.-~-._ “If she cannot see the greater purpose of the mission then perhaps she is not a fit choice to be part of it,” he says drolly into the receiver, eyes on the profile of the failed hero. “It’s a shame too,” he leans back in his chair. “She has such a fascinating quirk.”He hangs up, ending his voicemail and letting it be sent off through the secure line not even his old master knows about. The candid photo of the girl’s profile smiles up at him from the screen. He writes in a final note before exiting the file. Now on the screen lay his master’s vitals. He hums as he presses a button that releases another dose of the quirk suppressant – such a fine innovation he made when presented with the wrong boy. A happy accident that is now leading to the demise of the one who has been containing his genius all this time.He laces his fingers together as he stares down at the counter. 20… 25…He hit the button again at 30 percent. In a few more weeks’ time, he’d be able to up the dosage again another five percent.Running the calculations over mentally he was sure he could up it to over 50% by the end of the year. Perfectly timed for the next phase of the larger plan… His hands slam down at his desk in his fury. He knew! All for One knew and had gone and gotten himself captured! All his life support apparatus had been removed for the flimsy, uninspired little piece of plastic! He’d be able to detox himself without any issue in there and there was nothing–!As his fists slammed against the console once more they hit several keys, resulting in his search history being pulled up.Heavy breathing was all that could be heard for a few moments as he stared at a small grouping of the prior inquiries. And then he began to chuckle. What a perfect solution to this conundrum.

_.-~-._ .-~-._ .-~-._ .-~-._ .-~-._ “Ah, Aizawa, any news–?”The man put up a hand for silence as the other rubbed tiredly at his eyes. When his colleague looked up and grey eyes met Toshinori’s, he knew there was no good news to be shared about the search results. He couldn’t help a mental cursing of his frailer form being all he could use these days. If only he’d been faster, if only he’d checked on them sooner, if only–He took a shuddering breath, his entire body reeling with the physical pain of his old wounds and the emotional pain of his utter failure in the last forty-eight hours. His present coworker’s offered platitudes to him, but he didn’t really hear any of it.His successor and the little girl were gone, and he couldn’t help but feel it was all his fault.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
I got a notification about a comment and upon opening it realised it's been over a year since I last touched this.Um. Whoops?Nothing like the Ao3 curse (though I do have a job and have finished high school now, so... yay for that?), just a severe lack of writing motivation and falling out of the fandom off and on.Unfortunately, I can't guarantee anything to come of the burst of inspiration I've had other than a small rewrite/overhaul of the first two parts in this series (On Edge and Burning Up). When I first started writing them I was in a worse place mentally and viewed the actions of certain characters (coughcough All Might coughcough) much more cynically then I do now. These days, I want more comfort than hurt, so the rewrite will include a more favourable view of All Might (I mean, I've already changed canon with Burning Up, what's the harm in changing more?). I was already planning on reframing the actions of my AU-Might in the partially written second chapter of this fic, but I think fully rewriting things at this point would be a better course of action as it will also allow me to double-check things in this small 'verse and adjust where necessary. I do promise to finish this one day. Whether that's by the end of this year (which sounds kind of like a fun goal, even if just to see how far I get into finishing) or by the end of next year. I read every comment and though I've not replied to a few, know I really appreciate them and the interest being shown through them. If you have any ideas you want to see included now's the time to ask! Though, I do reserve the right to not include something if it doesn't fit what I'm aiming for. I'll mark this work as complete - for now. Whenever it loses that and has a chapter count once more... you can look forward to some updates! Thanks for sticking with me :)
