LADY WHISTLEDOWN 1813
According to the much-heralded poet Lord Byron: Of all bitches, dead or alive, a scribbling woman is the most canine. If that should be true, then this author would like to show you her teeth.. My name is Lady Whistle down. You do not know me, and you never shall. But if you are currently reading these papers of record, then rest assured: I certainly know you.
People outside read the paper completely captivated. Perhaps one resides within the household of a certain Baron Featherington. Should one have a bracket for a face? Perhaps one resides within the household of a certain Baron Featherington. Should one have a bracket for a face. “Tighter, tighter “Portia ordered as she squeezed prudence into her corset, nearly cutting the poor girl’s airways.“Is she to breathe Mama ?” Penelope asked concerned for her sister.“ Nonsense, when I was Prudence’s age, I was able to have a waist of the size of an orange and a half” Portia grunted as she pulled forcefully at the strings.
Or perhaps one is more fortunate. Admirably proportioned, impressively refined. Then perhaps... One is a Bridgerton.. A total of eight children in this most prolific of broods. The rather industrious viscountess and late viscount having produced four perfectly handsome sons and four perfectly beautiful daughters.
“hugh ! I am already roasting! “ Eloise complained for the tenth time this morning.“Are you to complain the entire day, Eloise?” franscesca asked softly but exasperated.“Surely, I cannot be expected to bear these fashions the entire day.” Eloise continued to complain as if she had not heard her“I feel like a princess. Do look like one?” hyacinth exclaimed joyfully.“Do you truly wish to know what I think you look like?” Eloise shot back.“On your left!” Gregory rushed past hyacinth as stole her ribbon.“Gregory!!“Is our dear sister still not ready?” Benedict asked stressed.“She has only been readying herself the entire night.” Francesca said.“You mean her entire life. Where is Anthony?” Eloise asked curious“I shall run up and hasten her along.” Collin tried to rush upstairs but benedict stopped him“Is he not attending?” Eloise continued to push“Colin, wait. I will do it.” Benedict interfered“She likes me much better than you, Benedict.” Collin teased his brother“Did she say that?” benedict stated slightly hurt“Everyone says that.” Collin teased more“If our eldest brother is not bothering to attend, then why must I—” Eloise found It unfair“ELOISE. Quiet.” Benedict ordered“Oh, has that ever worked?” Eloise replied sarcastically. And she suddenly turns, yelling upstairs: “DAPHNE!!! YOU. MUST. MAKE. HASTE!”Eloise turned to look at a jaw dropped benedict and an amused collin at her un-lady like attitude “ should you think she heard me ? “Eloise then whispered proudly.
Yes. Perfect, indeed….
Unlike Lady Featherington, the widowed Lady Bridgerton has only one daughter on the market this year. Her eldest darling, the season's forthcoming diamond, Miss Daphne Bridgerton.
“Any sign of him yet ?” Violet asked her second son inquisively making him try to hide his nervous expression
“Should your brother wish to be obeyed as Lord Bridgerton, he must act as Lord Bridgerton. Where IS he, Benedict? » violet glared at him« I do not know » benedict lied.Find a ravenous Anthony Bridgerton, along with a lady friend Siena Rosso up against a tree. His breeches, down around his boots. Her skirts, bunched around her waist. When Anthony suddenly catches the eye of a beleaguered-looking VALET (40s) standing on the other side of the tree. The Valet holds up his hand. Anthony sighs, checking his pocket-watch. Unhappy, he tosses the watch aside. And as his movements grow a tad bit faster, and our Valet lets out an exasperated sigh.
For today is the day London's marriage-minded misses shall be presented to Her Majesty the Queen.
As a beaming Daphne eyes the beautiful scenery that passes...
A much-anticipated day, when dreams shall finally be achieved. Hopes, fully realized..
As Prudence and Philipa vie for space in their seats and an indifferent Penelope plays with her hair ribbon
And courses of lives, changed. For the better. One hopes
Practically all of society, in their glittering gowns and luxurious finery, passes beneath the majestic arches of this palace. Benedict, Colin and Gregory arrive on horse, trailed by the family's carriage. as footmen help the ladies down, daphne excitedly takes it all in, as a breathless Anthony approaches them after climbing off quickly from his horse.“Brother! You came here.” Daphne exclaimed relieved“Of course I’m here, sister. Would never miss such an important day for you and our family” Anthony reassured.“No, you would just be late for it.” Violet remarked ironically as Anthony gave her an uncomfortable look.Anthony changed the subject and offered his arm to his sister.“Shall we? “he asked and they were off at Daphne’s exuberant nod.
One's triumph at the palace today invariably signifies one's success on the marriage mart tomorrow.
“Miss Daphne Bridgerton. Presented by her mother. The Right Honourable, the Dowager Viscountess Bridgerton!” the lord in waiting announced.Queen Charlotte sits at the far end of the room. society members, on both sides of an insanely long aisle, all staring back at Daphne now.Daphne moves down the aisle -- slowly, carefully -- locking eyes with Her Majesty. The Bridgerton siblings watch from the sidelines, where Eloise covertly reads Whistledown..Daphne finally reaches the end of the aisle. A mere inches from the Queen now. She curtsies. So deep she's practically kneeling. Like she practiced. Her Majesty tilts her head. Judging. Everyone leans forward. It's fucking TENSE.
Pray, it is the Queen who shall keep the fashionable world apprised of a lady's single most valuable and desirable asset: her reputation.
Daphne finally reaches the end of the aisle. A mere inches from the Queen now. She curtsies. So deep she's practically kneeling. Like she practiced. Her Majesty tilts her head. Judging. Everyone leans forward. It's fucking TENSE.
As such, any lady failing to secure the court's glowing endorsement shall endure the consequences.
The Queen's on her feet now. Staring down at Daphne, until“ Flawless, my dear. “ Queen charlotte stated And she kisses Daphne on the forehead.Anthony smiles from the sidelines, impressed, as gentlemen whisper. Daphne stares up at the queen -- her mouth momentarily agape -- completely swept up in what's very clearly a HUGE moment. As Daphne and Violet back away-- DAPHNE quietly, to Violet whisêred “Did that truly just happen?” “Keep smiling, dearest. They are watching you. Now more than ever.” Violet whispered back still bowing
A weapon this author will wield most keenly. No matter who you are. Or what your name might be..
Although who knew how season was going to turn out.
As the tense moment passed, the Bridgertons felt the tension ease from their backs, especially with their sister's successful presentation as the highlight. They resumed watching the rest of the presentations with mild interest until the relief of the final name being called, a relief shared particularly by the brothers and Eloise. "Miss Blair Cornelia Waldorf, daughter of Dowager Duchess Bass, accompanied by her brother, the esteemed Duke Charles Bass," the announcement rang out, causing some gasps at the distinguished names and titles mentioned. The Bridgertons, however, looked up curiously, finding the names unfamiliar and noting the peculiarity of siblings bearing different surnames. As the doors swung open, all eyes turned in awe towards the stunning figure that entered, accompanied by a very handsome gentleman in his late 20s. She exuded confidence and grace, like she owned it, like she was the queen herself, appearing almost regal with her sweet smile accentuating her high cheekbones and flawless porcelain skin, her dark brown hair cascading in perfect curls down her shoulders, unlike the typical debutante styles. Her attire was unlike anything they had seen before, an off-shoulder gown highlighting her collarbone and slender waist. She stood before the queen, her mischievous smile making Anthony’s heart skip unexpectedly without him knowing why and leaving him mesmerized. "She's stunning," Benedict remarked admiringly from beside him, likening her to a work of art. "She is..." Anthony acknowledged, his words trailing off in awe. "Long time no see, Your Majesty. It is always a pleasure," Blair greeted with a sweet smile, barely suppressing her amusement at the queen's surprised expression. "Blair! What a surprise!" The queen exclaimed, rising from her seat to embrace the girl, causing murmurs of shock among the society members witnessing the familiarity between them. “look at how much you have grown since last time I saw you, you really are your mother’s daughter” at the last sentence, Blair’s expression dimmed slightly before putting a well practiced small.“you are perfection incarnated, my dear, the brightest jewel that I crossed path with in all my life. “ the Queen stated loud enough for the room to hear as she pecked Blair’s check fondly. The room erupted in shocked whisper but in understanding at her majesty compliment, the Bridgeton swallowed hard since this compromised Daphne’s diamond status and her potential future and chances to find a husband. An indignant cough interrupted them. "And of course, Charles, how could I forget you? You've become even more handsome since the last time I saw you," the queen turned to the dashing man, who smiled and bowed slightly before kissing the back of her hand. "You should take a look in the mirror yourself, Your Majesty. How is it that you remain so beautiful?" His raspy, seductive voice made women swoon and blush, even the queen herself. "Always a charmer. I hope you abandon your rakish ways and settle down with a girl of my choosing," she remarked, prompting a nervous chuckle from the man."Perhaps when pigs fly," Blair teased her brother making the queen laugh while he threw her an annoyed look."I have missed your banter, you two. Surely you must stay to have dinner with me. I'm sure Amelia and George will be happy to reunite with you both as well. You can tell us all about America and your travels through Europe," the queen suggested, prompting nods of agreement from both Blair and Charles."It would be our pleasure," Blair stated with a soft smirk."Let's head out then," the queen said eagerly, dismissing the guests absentmindedly, not really paying them much attention as she exited with them through the side door. One thought ran through everyone's mind: What just happened? While the Bridgerton’s remained standing there concerned for daphne and wondering hw they are going to inform her of the new events that took place, Anthony could not help but remember that woman’s sweet look and smile that were so enticing instead of thinking of his mistress who he took less than two hours ago against a tree.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
In the outskirts of London stood a luxurious chateau where the siblings, who had presented themselves to the queen the previous day, were staying during their time in the city. Blair sat in the garden with a cup of tea, engrossed in her favorite Shakespearean play, 'Hamlet.' Meanwhile, her brother perused reports delivered by his valet earlier that morning. However, their tranquil morning was abruptly interrupted by Blair's favorite maid calling out to her. "Miss Blair, a newspaper has arrived earlier, from a certain 'Lady Whistedown,'" Dorota exclaimed in her usual Russian accent, causing Blair to sigh as she had just reached her favorite part of the book. Meanwhile, Charles merely glanced momentarily with a raised eyebrow before turning his attention to the document. "What's so important about this sheet, Dorota?" Blair inquired curiously. "It talks about your debut yesterday; it also mentions Mister Bass," Dorota exclaimed excitedly. Blair snapped the book shut and snatching the sheet, exclaiming excited forgetting her manners "Gimme!” "It says that I am without a doubt the real jewel of the crown, and any man who marries you would not only be lucky because of my beauty and wit, but also because of my close relationship with the royal family and the fact that I am, in fact, the daughter of Eleanor Waldorf. Although I had some competition since Daphne Bridgerton had the classic characteristic of a Diamond of the first water.” The more Blair read, the more she detested what the writer had penned. One reason was the comparison to her mother, and the other was the widely known fact among her close circle that she detested being bested in anything. She breathed to be number one in everything which was exactly was her brother pointed out, so he decided to tease her."Is our little Blair afraid of some competition?" he teased, glancing at her, which prompted her to throw him a glare that could freeze hell twice over."Additionally, for something you're not even really interested in. Need I remind you of the imminency of your engagement to Nathaniel Van der Built?" Charles continued, completely immune to her dark look."You are right. Have your fun," Blair leaned back in her chair, relaxed, which intrigued and apprehended her brother since he knew she liked to win an argument. He understood he was on the right path when she opened her mouth. "You're also mentioned in this paper. Lady Whistedown declared you as the most eligible bachelor London has ever had the honor of having this past year. What with your title, your endless fortune, connections, and not to mention good looks," she teased devilishly before adding, "Her words, not mine." "Besides, until I'm engaged, I can have my fun being courted and complimented," she stated with a shrug. Charles groaned in annoyance, scratching the paper from her to confirm what she just said, while she exclaimed a "hey" in indignation. "Get your own paper," she stated with a pout. "This is exactly what I need. A horde of desperate mamas trying to get me to dance with their daughters." he huffed out."I am not feeling too well. I guess I will sit out from this ball," he stated, pretending to clutch his head."Don't you dare! I will attend, so will you. I need a chaperone, and since my dear parents only give a damn about giving orders and not following them, which explains why mother dearest is not here, you are the one to take me to this event" she stated matter-of-factly, making Charles snort in amusement and exasperation. "Oh, please. Like you need a chaperone. You're eighteen, and lord knows what you have done with Nathaniel while you stayed alone in his room, not that mother forbade you. Why do you even need a chaperone?" he asked sardonically. "Things are different here than in America. I would like to give a perfect impression, and hush about Nathaniel. Walls have ears. I don’t want anyone to question my purity, especially when it's still intact," Blair punched him slightly on the arm. "And who will question it? - oh, right, Nathaniel, since you're marrying him," Charles stated sarcastically, doing a gesture as if he just made an obvious realization, making his sister glare at him. "Whatever I do, I do not want to be viewed or placed at the same stature as the women we saw yesterday, leaning against a tree." Blair scrunched her nose in disgust at the lack of class they witnessed during their travel to the debutante ceremony the day before, causing Charles to burst out in laughter. "That was quite the sight, sister. I forgot to tell you;"Charles stated, his voice still filled with laughter while his sister looked at him curiously with a raised eybrow wondering what was so funny."I think I know who the sword in the sheath belonged to,""You are disgusting," Blair exclaimed, repulsed by the expression he used. "Do you still want to know or not?" Charles teased. Blair brightened up. "Of course, you know how much I like to gather as much dirt as possible on my potential enemies," she gleamed. "Viscount Bridgerton. He's the brother of the diamond," he replied with a devilish grin. Blair's eyes brightened with intrigue. "He's Daphne Bridgerton's brother?" she exclaimed, her tone sharpening as she added, "Stop referring to her as 'the diamond.'" Her brother knew exactly how to provoke her, yet he only smirked in response. "How did you come by this information?" Blair inquired with curiosity gleaming in her eyes. "At the carriage's side, leading the procession, I caught a glimpse of the family crest. And guess who arrived fashionably late, riding on horseback?" he stated, casually sipping his drink amidst their conversation. "Are you absolutely certain about this?" she raised a skeptical brow. Her brother feigned offense. "You know I always vet my sources meticulously. I heard at the club yesterday that he's been ensnared in an affair with the same soprano for three years and has been footing her lodging bills all this time; her name is Sienna Russo." He finished, causing Blair to light up as if she had just been bestowed with a diamond necklace. "If you weren’t such a rake, I am sure you would make an excellent prosecutor, with your knack for gathering evidence," Blair complimented him, clapping her hands excitedly. "Defending the innocent? Not a future I ever imagined," Charles shrugged, wearing a pensive expression. "With good reason. What is he doing, consorting with the same woman for three years? I thought men preferred novelty, especially with ladies of the night," Blair asked, intrigued. "Perhaps she possesses some hidden talent, some unique skills in the art of conversation," Charles snorted, earning a disgusted look from his sister. "Just as you have your own preferences?" Blair retorted rhetorically; her disgust evident. Charles shook his head. "You know me; I never entertain a lover more than twice. I bid farewell, and that's that," he remarked, his gaze distant for a moment before returning to the present. Blair wore a slight melancholic expression, understanding what was on his mind, until she was interrupted by his voice. "The question is, what do you intend to do with this information?" Charles asked, intrigued. Blair sighed happily, like a child receiving a coveted treat. "I was contemplating total social destruction," she snapped out of her reverie. "depending on my mood." "And here I thought you were going soft," Charles stated, amused, while Blair gave him a devilish look. "I should prepare myself for the ball, then. You should do the same," Blair stated as she rose from her seat, excitement evident in her movements. Her brother watched her go, shaking his head fondly and amusedly. The ball promised to be an intriguing affair; he only hoped the matchmaking mamas would leave him in peace and some drama would take place, that was his last thought before going back to his reports.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Maid Rose, along with two other maids, help a glowing, vibrating Daphne out of her extensive court attire and into her afternoon dress. Corset unlaced. Makeup scrubbed. Fake hair unpinned. A precise operation. Hyacinth hovers as Eloise reads Whistledown next to Francesca in the background.“You absolutely sparkled, sister!” Hyacinth exclaimed in excitement.“Come now, I merely simpered and minced in a pretty dress like everyone else.” Daphne said trying to appear humble. “Not exactly like everyone else.” Francesca cheered on “I shall need to go and visit with Penelope. Her presentation was anything but... What was it the Queen called you again— “Eloise stated with a thoughtful look“Flawless. Or some such thing. Trust I was astonished Her Majesty offered me, out of two hundred young ladies present, a most gracious remark.” Daphne glowed as she said this.“You, do not forget. Miss Waldorf made also quite the entrance, her majesty calling her-“ Eloise stated but was cut off by Hyacinth“Perfection incarnated! The queen even stated that miss Blair was the brightest jewel she have crossed in all her life!” Hyacinth exclaimed not understanding the why her sister Francesca shook her head at her behind daphne.“Do you think one day I would be like her?” Hyacinth stated in admiration.“Miss Waldorf?” Daphne asked confused and worried while Francesca smacked her head at her sisters inability to keep their mouths shut.“Miss Blair Waldorf is the sister of Duke Bass that escorted her. She was the last debutant to make her debut. She made quiet the impression with the queen, adding to the fact of her incomparable beauty and grace, she seems to be quite close with her majesty since she was invited along with her brother by her majesty to dine with the royal family that same evening.” Francesca decided to admit the truth, make Daphne breath shorten slightly at the stress she began to feel.“ this will reduce drastically my chances on the marriage mart.” Daphne muttered to her self as she sat down.“Like that is important, the compliments given to you by the queen. You and miss Waldorf had quite the distinction. And now two hundred young ladies have a common adversary. I wish you two luck sister.« i thank you for your concern but I thought you said you needed to visit Penelope?” Daphne scowled at her sister.“I thought the morning was perfect. Now Daphne will have her choice of handsome suitors, perhaps like Duke Bass ” Hyacinth stated to cut the tension.“ What would you know of handsome suitors?” Francesca stated amused “ But I must admit that miss Waldorf’s brother is a very handsome man, even his voice is nice to listen to.” She admitted with a pinkness on her cheeks“ Not exactly achoice since they will be divided between her and miss Waldorf.” Eloise stated nonchalantly.“ Eloise !” Francesca scolded her elder sister.“The morning did not only belong to me, dear Hyacinth. --My success on the marriage mart influences all of your prospects. Hyacinth may still have many years to go, but... There are others present who will need to make matches in -- oh, what is it -- say, a year's time? “she stated pointedlyAnd Eloise looks up. Daphne's staring at her now“We will all need to find love. One day. Indeed, a love as pure as what dear mama and papa once shared, if we are so fortunate. I merely hope I am able to continue such a grand tradition..”And Daphne's clearly feeling the pressure here -- as Eloise eyes her.Suddenly, Violet excitedly sails in, cutting the tension, trailed by A maid who carries a collection of gorgeous gowns.“Your dresses have arrived!” violet exclaimed And a thrilled Daphne makes an immediate beeline for them--“Oh, this one is quite ravishing. “DAPHNE stated with enthusiasm. “Mary Edgecombe wore a similar shade last season— “Violet stated but was cut off by her daughter.“--And secured three offers the very next day. One from an Earl.” She recited in excitement“Mary Edgecombe, now the Countess of Fulton, apparently spent the last year living in a cottage hundreds of miles away from her Earl. She is miserable.” Eloise informed them, being the down to earth girl she is.And they look to Eloise. She holds up her reading.“It says it all here.” She continued as she smacked a paper.“Do not tell me that is yet another scandal sheet. Eloise.” Violet scolded her daughter softly.“This one is different. This one list subjects by name. In full. Now that is different.” She defended herself. Hyacinth reaches for the paper--“Let me see!” Hyacinth exclaimed, but Francesca has already grabbed it.“Lady Whistledown...” Francesca muttered“Lady Whistledown?” daphne muttered in confusion never having heard the name.“The author’s name” eloise explained“Do we know a Lady Whistledown?” violet asked confused“Surely Lady Whistledown cannot be her true name...” Francesca the ever so intelligent explained. And that's when Daphne snatches the paper from Francesca’s hands. Violet watches her read a beat, before asking what it does say.Daphne read as she answers “She loathes the fact we have been named alphabetically, oldest to youngest...”“Your father and I found it orderly.” Violet defended their idea.“well, Lady Whistledown finds banality.” She answered back.“The papers were distributed across town today without charge—” Eloise.“--Without charge? What kind of author...” Violet stated as she takes the paper from Daphne. Begins to read.“Well at least she has something right. She compared Daphne to the diamond of the first water how lovely.” She smiled before her smile fell into confusion and worry.“I do believe if anyone can live up to such lofty titles, it is my eldest sister.” Hyacinth exclaimed proudly.“Who is this, Blair Waldorf?” Violet asked her daughters.“Why mother?” Eloise asked as she snatched back the paper.“Lady whistledown named her the real jewel of the crown and that any man who marries her would not only be lucky because of her beauty and wit but also because of her clause relations to the royal crown and because she is the daughter of Eleanor Waldorf.” Eloise exclaimed, her voice tinged with awe. The weight of those words descended upon poor Daphne like a heavy mist, casting a shadow over her spirits. To be compared merely to a diamond while Miss Waldorf was hailed as the pinnacle of regal elegance left her feeling diminished. "Eleanor Waldorf?!" Eloise gasped, unable to contain her excitement at the mention of such a renowned name. Francesca, ever curious, turned to her elder sister. "Do you have knowledge of her, Eloise?" she inquired, her interest piqued. "Yes, indeed," Eloise began, her voice filled with admiration. "She is a woman of remarkable strength and talent. Rising from humble beginnings as a seamstress, she garnered fame and fortune as the favored couturier to the highest echelons of society, including royal families. Nineteen years ago, she wedded the immensely wealthy Duke Bass, a union that not only expanded her business but also solidified her place in high society. However, it is said that she did not readily accept his proposal." Gasps of astonishment filled the room, and Hyacinth's scandalized voice cut through the air. "She refused a duke. Was he lacking in charm? Perhaps even ugly?" she exclaimed; her disbelief evident. Eloise shook her head, she has a starry expression on her face. "On the contrary, he was reputed to be exceedingly handsome. It is rumored that his son from his first marriage bears a striking resemblance to him, do you remember him ? thee Duke Bass who graced all by his presence yesterday, accompanying Miss Waldorf." Violet, eager for more revelations, interjected with a question of her own. "A duke in attendance yesterday? Pray, do tell," she urged, her anticipation palpable. Eloise, giving her mother a pointed look, "But of course, dear mother. Now, allow me to continue the tale," she declared sarcastically, regaling her attentive audience composed of her sisters, mother and maids with the saga of Lady Eleanor Waldorf's ascent to nobelity.“Continue the story sister!” Francesca asked excited by the end of the story.“Well Lady Eleanor Waldorf accepted at the condition that she could keep her last name since it was her brand and that if she had a daughter, she would have her last name and inherit the ‘Waldorf originals’” Eloise finished brightly, the other women even the servants stared jaw dropped.“A child taking after his mother’s name? impossible.” Violet denied, in a disbelieve voice."Indeed," Eloise affirmed with a nod, her admiration evident in her tone. "It is said that the duke's love for Lady Eleanor Waldorf knew no bounds, so much so that he willingly acquiesced to her terms, driven by a deep and abiding affection for her."“Lady Waldorf is truly a remarkable woman," she sighed in dreamily, her gaze thoughtful. "To forge her own path, to build an empire from naught but her own talents and determination, and to use her marriage as a means to expand her influence rather than merely fulfill societal expectations—such strength and foresight are rare indeed." "Mother, may I attend the ball this evening?" Eloise turned to her mother with a hopeful gaze, her eyes alight with anticipation. Violet, taken aback by her daughter's unexpected request, exchanged bewildered glances with her other daughters before addressing Eloise. "Eloise? What has brought about this sudden change of heart? Did you not express your reluctance to make your debut this season?" she inquired; her concern evident in her voice.Eloise, undeterred, offered a straightforward explanation. "That was before I learned of Lady Eleanor Waldorf's attendance at tonight's event," she revealed, a hint of excitement in her voice. Francesca couldn't help but snort with amusement at her sister's reasoning. "Surely, it should be the suitors who draw you to such gatherings, not the presence of another woman," she remarked, her tone laced with sarcasm, earning her a reproachful glare from Eloise.Violet, however, remained firm in her decision. "You cannot, Eloise. We had planned for Daphne's debut this year, and no ball gown has been prepared for you," she stated firmly, her maternal concern guiding her decision.“Please mother, I would like to meet Eleanor Waldorf. I am sure she is going to attend the event to chaperone her daughter. Just one ball and I’ll be very discreet.” Eloise asked pleadingly her mother. But it was Daphne who unexpectedly came to Eloise's aid, advocating on her behalf. "Allow her this, Mother. Consider it a practice for her upcoming season next year. I can lend her one of my gowns," she proposed kindly.Violet's gaze swept over her daughters, each one standing steadfastly beside Eloise, their united front a way to demonstrate their supportsRelenting to the combined pleas of her daughters that began to grow louder, Violet sighed and gave her consent. "Very well, Eloise. You shall accompany us, but you must promise to exercise discretion," she relented, a soft smile gracing her lips as Eloise enveloped her in a grateful embrace.“Thank you, thank you mother.” Eloise muttered again and again.Hyacinth, ever the optimist, couldn't contain her enthusiasm at the prospect of her sister's potential courtship. "Perhaps Eloise will even find a suitor and wed this season!" she exclaimed, her hands clapping together in excitement.“As Miss Waldorf remarked yesterday, such an occurrence would only happen when pigs learn to fly!” Eloise stated matter-of-factly, puffing her chest out, sure of herself.
Oh, Eloise don’t you know it’s bad to provoke destiny to prove you wrong….
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
At the Danbury’s domain, the footman received guests from their carriages, And here is the carriage of the Bridgerton family arriving. Out of it steps Anthony, followed by Violet, and then Daphne and Eloise in stunning gowns. The sisters enter along with their mother and brother, looking around taking all in, overcome with two distinct emotions as people quite to stare at them“Mama... It is magical » Daphne stated mermazed by the beauty of the ballroom.“I feel like a cow being presented at an auction.” Eloise stated frustrated making Anthony snort at the comparison and at the different reactions of the sisters.“Eloise, quiet” violet scolded the youngest of her two-daughter present who huffed.“I will go look for Penelope mother!” Eloise stated as she escaped without waiting for an answer from either her mother or brother.“Eloise!” The two whispered shouted after.“Did we have to bring her mother? She is quite handful.” Anthony stated with a tired sigh feeling like he lost 10 years of his life span.“Let her brother.” Daphne stated amused and kindly with a smile, she then noticed the gentlemen staring at her captivated, it seems that her brother has also noticed.“They are all staring, mother. » Anthony stated quietly.“Allow them to come to you, dearest” Violet beams and advise her eldest daughter while Anthony had a threatening glare on his face.
Eloise P.O.V
Meanwhile, as Eloise caught sight of Penelope across the room, she made a conscious decision not to immediately join her and her two annoying sisters. Instead, she opted for a quiet exploration of the surroundings, her keen curiosity leading her to discreetly traverse the room in search of Lady Waldorf. With a stroke of ingenuity, she ascended the staircase to gain a vantage point overlooking the ballroom, hoping for a glimpse of her idol. Upon reaching the upper level, however, her hopes were dashed as neither Lady Waldorf nor her daughter had yet made an appearance. Disappointed but undeterred, Eloise sought solace on a nearby balcony, ensuring that her family remained preoccupied and unaware of whereabouts. Lost in her thoughts, she retrieved a cigarette from her reticule, her focus solely on the task at hand. Oblivious to any other presence, she lit the cigarette with practiced ease, savoring the first inhale with a sigh of relief as she leaned against the balcony wall. Yet, her tranquility was abruptly shattered as her gaze absentmindly fell upon a looming figure shrouded in the shadows. Startled, she choked on the smoke, her senses suddenly on high alert as she struggled to regain her breath.“What the – Bloody hell! “She exclaimed knowing that if her mother heard her curse she would be scolded, never mind that it was in front of another gentleman. The man, of course It had to be a man that she found herself alone with rushed to her to apologize.“Are you alright miss! I must apologize I did not mean to startle you.” He now stood close to her and Eloise was able to see his features. He towered over her, he was a handsome man with dark skin and sharp features, his brown eyes stared deep into her blue eyes in deep concern.Eloise waved him off nonchalantly “I’m alright, you scared me. This is all” she stated before falling back against the wall relaxed. The stranger lifted an eyebrow curiously at the beautiful and mysterious girl weird attitude.“Can I ask you a question? What are you doing hiding like a thief in the dark in a balcony while it is quite cold out here?” Eloise asked the stranger with a raised eyebrow. The stranger paused, momentarily taken aback by her directness, before offering a candid response. "Hiding," he admitted, sensing something refreshingly genuine in her demeanor."Hiding? From what, pray tell? Have you perhaps absconded with a debutante's trinket, only to find yourself pursued by a horde of fluttering feathers and ribbons?" Eloise quipped, her frustration with societal conventions seeping into her words, eliciting a genuine laugh from her mysterious companion. Eloise raised a brow at the rich sound. His laughter echoed richly in the darkness, a sound that piqued Eloise's curiosity even further. "No, no stolen trinkets in my possession," he assured her, his amusement lingering in his voice."Then what, may I ask, brings you to seek refuge in the shadows?" Eloise pressed on, her curiosity rising.“Do you really not know me?” The stranger raised a brow doubtfully."Must I?" Eloise responded, her own eyebrow arching in bemusement as she took a drag from her cigarette, exhaling a plume of smoke into the frosty night air.Shrugging off her lack of recognition, the stranger extended his hand in introduction. "Allow me to rectify that oversight. I am Simon, simply Simon," he declared, offering his hand for her to kiss in the customary manner.“Nice to meet you simply Simon, I am Eloise, simply Eloise.” With a playful glint in her eye, Eloise accepted his hand, though instead of the expected kiss, she deftly maneuvered it into a firm handshake, a gesture more befitting two gentlemen. Simon found himself momentarily taken aback by her unexpected response, caught off guard by the spirited nature of the woman before him."Do you fancy one, Simon?" Eloise queried, her hand delving into her reticule to retrieve another cigarette, which she extended toward her newfound companion. Simon accepted the offer graciously, allowing the cigarette to rest between his lips. Before he could inquire about a light, Eloise moved closer, her presence enveloping him as she deftly ignited his cigarette with the flame from her own. In that fleeting moment, he caught a whiff of her intoxicating scent, the soft touch of her ungloved hand against his cheek as she expertly kindled the flame. She must have removed her glove to avoid soiling it, he reasoned, his senses heightened by the proximity to this enigmatic woman."How about you, Eloise? What brings you to the shadows unchaperoned?" Simon inquired, curiosity coloring his tone as he took a drag from his cigarette.Eloise's response was swift, her frustration with societal norms evident in her words. "Ah, yet another of London society's peculiarities," she remarked with a hint of exasperation. "Why is it that women require chaperoning while men do not? What dreadful calamity could possibly befall a woman in the company of a man without a chaperone? You and I are here together, conducting ourselves in a perfectly civilized manner, Simon. I didn't fling myself at you or engage in fisticuffs, nor did I suddenly profess my undying affection," she continued, her tone laced with defiance against the confines imposed upon her gender. It was Simon’s turn to cough now at what he heard.“Not all men are gentleman, some can be not mindful of women’s will Eloise.” Simon stated, not knowing how to explain to her, it was not a matter of fighting or kissing, but of much pleasurable activities.Eloise sighed, her shoulders slumping with disappointment. "I did not debut this year, much to my relief. This season belongs to my sister," she confessed. "But I chose to attend this ball with the hope of meeting my idol, Lady Eleanor Waldorf. Alas, she has yet to make an appearance," she lamented, her voice tinged with regret.“Lady Eleanor Waldorf?” Simon asked confused, not having yet heard the name, although the last name seemed quite familiar. Then, Eloise recited him what she explained earlier to her mother and siblings."It's exceedingly rare to witness a woman accomplish so much in a society dominated by men. The fact that this woman achieved such remarkable feats without being relegated solely to the role of a wife and mother is something I aspire to emulate," Eloise sighed wistfully, her voice filled with longing. "You see, marrying, being considered a beauty, and having children should not be viewed as accomplishments. Attending university, now that's an achievement! If only I were born a man, I could pursue such dreams. But instead, I'm expected to listen as my mother extols the virtues of her daughters simply because some man admires our shiny hair and blue eyes and wishes to fill us with babies!" she exclaimed, her frustration boiling over as she vented her grievances to Simon.Simon could only stare at Eloise in astonishment, his eyes wide and his jaw slack, utterly taken aback by the fiery passion burning within her. Never before had he encountered a lady or woman so fiercely outspoken and impassioned, and he found himself captivated by her spirited demeanor.Eloise, having noticed Simon's astonished reaction, arched a challenging eyebrow in his direction “why are you gaping? is it because I’m a woman and I shouldn’t know how to give a proper speech?” Simon lifted his hands in surrender and chuckled."Not at all. I didn't underestimate you, nor do I underestimate any woman. After all, I was raised by a fiery and spirited woman myself—Lady Danbury—who never hesitates to speak her mind," Simon confessed, acknowledging the influence of the strong women in his life.Eloise's eyebrow arched in surprise. "You were raised by Lady Danbury?" she echoed, a flicker of realization crossing her features. Suddenly, it dawned on her. "And your name is Simon... You're the Duke," she exclaimed, her eyes widening with recognition.Simon swiftly placed a finger to his lips, urging her to silence, but he couldn't hide the disappointment that flickered in his eyes at her realization of his true status. “You were hiding from the mamas!” Eloise exclaimed as she chuckled."Does it change your perception of me now that you know my duchy status?" Simon asked, genuinely intrigued, his breath held as he awaited Eloise's response as he stared into her beautiful crystal blue eyes.Eloise raised a skeptical eyebrow. "Why should it?" she countered, puzzled by his question. Then, comprehension dawned upon her. "Do you think I would eagerly embrace the proposition for you to court or marry me?" she asked incredulously, her disbelief evident. "After all my passionate ranting? Are you perhaps deaf or did my fifteen-minute heartfelt discourse fall upon deaf ears?" she challenged; her tone tinged with sarcasm as Simon felt relief seep into his bones."Ah, but perhaps I should seek revenge for your failure to heed my speech by arranging a meeting with my elder sister," Eloise teased, playfully making a motion as if to summon her sibling. However, Simon's expression turned to one of horror, and he instinctively reached out and grasped her bare arm to stop her.The sudden contact between his warm palm and her pale, silky skin sent shivers racing down their spines. It was as if electricity surged between them, causing their hearts to beat irregularly as an unexpected wave of intensity washed over them.Eloise gasped, her eyes widening in surprise as she turned to face Simon. His intense gaze held her captive for a moment before he released her arms, his throat tightening with an unspoken tension. Meanwhile, Eloise's chest heaved with irregular breaths, her mind swirling with confusion over why his simple touch had such a profound effect on her.“I—li-listened to y-you;” he said, well stuttered. Simon stammered, for the first time in years, he realized. His words hesitant as he attempted to alleviate the tension between them.“Tha-that is great!” Eloise responded, heart racing."I have to go; I have to join my family. Goodbye, Simon," Eloise said hurriedly, her troubled expression betraying her inner turmoil. With a quick motion, she tossed aside her cigarette and glove before hastily departing, leaving Simon standing there, his thoughts in turmoil as he watched her retreating figure before crouching down to lift the glove she forgot and staring at it with a troubled expression and a faint smile.
Simon P.O.V
"Eloise..." Simon murmured, his thoughts consumed by the enigmatic woman who had left with such an impression on him. "I wonder if we'll meet again?" he pondered aloud, his gaze lingering on the discarded glove, his fingers gently caressing its delicate fabric. Despite not even knowing her full name, he couldn't shake the feeling of hope that their paths might cross once more.
Meanwhile with Daphne and Anthony
Daphne was still with Violet and Anthony, now being approached by Lord Ambrose a middle-aged mage Daphne curtsies.“Lady Bridgerton. Miss Bridgerton.” He greeted the ladies in a somewhat charming way.“Lord Ambrose.” Anthony appraised him with a challenging raised eyebrow.“Lord Bridgerton.” He responded stiffly.“I believe you have already been introduced to my daughter, Daphne, Lord Ambrose.” Violet smiled at the man.“Yes. We met at your brother's levee.” Lord Ambrose’s smile returned as he gazed at Daphne.“If I recall, my lord, you had just won your first race at Newmarket.”“His first and only, I believe.” Anthony cut in while Ambrose sweated.Daphne tried to break the tension.“In that case, let us hope his lordship has found himself a new horse.” Daphne stated with a harmless smile.Ambrose laughed, charmed. A content Violet eyes Daphne, pleased that she is a natural while Anthony shifts uneasily.“I have not had the pleasure of seeing you at our club lately, Ambrose.” Anthony raised a brow “Should it have anything to do with the unpaid balance you left on our betting books winter last? You remember that, yes? I do.” Anthony told him sharply while his sister and mother eyed him skeptically. As lord Ambrose hold Anthony’s gaze for few seconds before nodding and bowing before he left.“What was that?” Daphne asked her brother sharply who smiled satisfied with his work.“Lord Ambrose is a cheat. A man of any honor ensures his debts are fully paid.” Anthony responded to her.“I did not realize... » she stated hesitantly.« How could you have done? It is the very reason why I am here, sister. Let us take a turn about the room. » he stated as he took hold of Daphne's arm, pointedly leading her away from Violet. Daphne takes a quick look back at her mother, left standing there, just as a passing gentleman nod at Daphne. Daphne smiles, nods back, when Anthony veers her in another direction.« Ah Mister Duncan Lewis. » Anthony acknowledged“He is rather pleasing.” Daphne complemented to her brother“He is rather here to shuffle about hunting fortunes. Trust Mister Lewis knows of your sizable dowry. Leave him be. » her brother advisedDaphne nodded.“I presume you know of him, to?” she asked curiously.“Mister Worthington. Second son. We shall find better” was his answer. He continued on…...“He is of dubious parentage. (yet another) I shall not have you making a life with a poet, heaven forbid. (still another) Nor an eccentric. My word! » Anthony continued to mutter to his sister going over every eligible Bachelor. And throughout all of this, that glow of enthusiasm once visible behind Daphne's eyes has begun to extinguish.Suddenly a voice exclaimed their names “Anthony ! Daphne!”They turn, see Benedict and Colin approaching. Anthony sighs.“If the only upstanding gentlemen present this evening are your brothers, then we are in a great deal of trouble indeed.” He stated to her before greeting his siblings.“You continue to say we, yet-“Daphne deflated.“Did mother tell you yet? About my tour? I am to begin in Greece.” Collin said to his sister excited.“Greece? How adventurous, Colin-“daphne cheered for her brother“--On guard.” Anthony warned.Anthony nods toward an approaching Lady Danbury. As the boys immediately look for an exit“Too late. I already noted you.” Lady Danbury exclaimedAnthony/Benedict/Colin (all smiles) greeted “Lady Danbury! /Good evening! /Lovely to see you!”“Miss Bridgerton, you look rather lovely this evening.” Lady Danbury said the unique Bridgerton gril present in front of her.As she spots Daphne's empty dance card, tied around her wrist she continues.“Is there a reason I have yet to see you on the dance floor?” She asked intrigued“All in due time, Lady Danbury. We have only just arrived.” Anthony stated with a smile. Lady Danbury was poised to utter something, but her words dissolved into silence as a hush descended upon the ballroom. With curiosity piqued, she and the Bridgertons turned their attention to the source of the commotion, only to witness the entrance of the Bass siblings. As they made their grand arrival into the ballroom, they appeared even more resplendent and ethereal than the previous day, if that was even possible, a sight that seemed almost otherworldly in its magnificence.Lady Danbury lifted a brow when she heard daphne’s breath hitch as she stared at the man who made his entrance with the crown Jewel."Who is this?" Daphne inquired absentmindedly; her attention fully captured by the striking figure who had just made his entrance. Unbeknownst to her, her question elicited a knowing smirk from Lady Danbury, who observed the unfolding scene with keen interest, sensing a potential.“That is Duke Charles Bass, he is accompanying his sister miss Blair Waldorf, the jewel of the crown like Lady whistledown stated and now that I see her again for the first time in years, I can understand why, she is quite out of the world.” Lady Danbury stated as she watched them glid through the floor gracefully while talking and chuckling. The Bridgerton siblings couldn't help but concur as they beheld Miss Waldorf, her presence exuding an aura of elegance and perfection that left them breathless. Adorned in a resplendent royal blue ball gown, the fabric cascading around her in luxurious waves, she was a vision of unmatched beauty. Her shiny hair was artfully styled in an intricate bun, with tendrils of perfectly curled strands framing her delicate features.Miss Waldorf's makeup was understated yet impeccably applied, enhancing her natural radiance and causing her face to glow like the moon shining upon it. Her cheeks were flushed with a rosy hue, and her lips were glossed to perfection, beckoning any suitor with their irresistible allure. Anthony, in particular, felt an undeniable urge to kiss her, his desire intensifying with each passing moment as he found himself captivated by her undeniable charm as he watch her exchange with the guests with such ease only few could have.Their reveries were cut off by lady Danbury’s voice."Duke Bass is undoubtedly the most eligible bachelor Mayfair has seen in decades," remarked Lady Danbury, her tone tinged with admiration as she observed the esteemed guest. She is giving a ‘tip’ to the members of the family she is quiet fond of "Beyond his endless handsomeness and charms, which have erupted the hearts of many a woman, his wealth extends far beyond the confines of his duchy."Lady Danbury continued, repeating what was told to her by the queen "You see, his father, Barthowme, was originally a second son before his brother passed. Thus, Recognizing the potential way to enrich himself beyond the traditional bounds of nobility, he ventured into the realm of business, creating the Bass industries and expanding it through the years in Europe. Before his passing he was also a trusted advisor to the royal crown for decades.”"However," Lady Danbury added, her voice lowering slightly, "when his brother passed without leaving an heir, the responsibility fell squarely upon him to assume control. Now, Charles Bass, following the death of his father two years ago, presides over both the duchy and the vast Bass empire, which he himself has expanded, inheriting not only his father's wealth but also his keen business acumen."Lady Danbury continued "Not only that, but like his father before him, he serves as a counselor to the royal crown, having grown alongside the princes themselves." Her words painted a vivid picture of a man of immense influence and stature, leaving the Bridgerton’s thoroughly impressed by the magnitude of his power and influence.“Are you saying that he is an eligible able bachelor to court Daphne, lady Danbury.” Bendict bless him asked after the blank silence, making his sister who stared after the said man gasp at the sound of her name gasp and blush, while Anthony focused on the conversation interested“For miss Bridgerton’s Sake, I do not think so.” Lady Danbury shook her head making them all stare at her eyebrow raised."With all due respect, Misters and Miss Bridgerton," Lady Danbury interjected, her voice carrying a tone of solemnity, "Duke Bass, before his noble title, is first and foremost a businessman. From what I have gleaned from the queen herself, it appears that love is not at the forefront of his priorities. Rather, his primary objective is to secure a marriage alliance that will further his business interests beyond the confines of Europe and America."Lady Danbury paused, allowing her words to sink in before continuing, "Rumors abound regarding a potential match between him and Serena, the heiress of the Van der Woodsen empire residing in America. It is said that she has harbored feelings for him since their childhood days, and such an alliance could prove mutually beneficial in expanding their respective business ventures." Her revelation cast a sobering light on the realities the situation and daphne for her part felt a little disappointed without knowing why.“And here they come.” Lady Danbury warned as she placed a smile on her face.“Lady Danbury, what is it in this town’s water? you and our queen do not age at all, you are just even more beautiful after all these years.” A raspy and very attractive voice said as Charles bass approached the group to kiss the back of hand of Lady Danbury;Lady Danbury chuckled charmed by the man’s words “Charles Bass always the sweet talker, no wonder all those women fall at your feet. You have grown into a more handsome man in the last eight years we have not seen each other.” She responded to his compliment.“You say charmer, I say sweet liar, Lady Danbury. “ A melodious voice said with a deadpanned voice.“Are you calling me old, miss Waldorf?” Lady Danbury raised an eyebrow in a way that usually scare the bridgertons siblings who felt nervous at the sight of it, although miss Waldorf did not appear affected by it at all. "Yes," Blair stated matter-of-factly, her words cutting through the air like a knife, leaving the Bridgerton siblings staring at her in horror, anticipating the inevitable repercussions of her blunt rudeness. However, to their surprise, Blair's next words carried a note of unexpected humor. "You have aged, why lie? Although you have managed to retain your grace, I must say," she added with a hint of mischief dancing in her eyes and a satisfied smirk playing on her lips.Lady Danbury, caught off guard by Blair's boldness, erupted into laughter, the sound echoing through the room and causing the other siblings to gape in shock at the unfamiliar sight.“You sure have maintained your sharp tongue miss Waldorf and your humor.” Lady Danbury said between chuckles.“it’s good to see you, Lady Danbury.” Blair stated with a dimpled smile while she curtsied slightly in respect.“Do you see what I have to live with daily lady Danbury? Every day bullied by my own mean sister. “Charles asked in mirth making everyone laugh at the exchange as Blair rolled her eyes and sighed at his dramatics.“Ah right, I’ve yet to introduce you to my guests, the esteemed viscount Bridgerton, his brothers: misters Benedict and collin Bridgerton and as you should know Daphne Bridgerton.” Lady Danbury introduced them to the Bridgerton making them turn their gazes to them.“A honor to make your acquittance, your graces, we have heard so much about.” Anthony, the head of the family introduced himself to the duke by bowing slightly his head and shaking his hand, his brothers doing the same."Likewise, Lord Bridgerton," Charles remarked politely as he shook their hands, his demeanor gracious and affable. "I must say, you Bridgerton men seem to attract nothing but compliments even in your absence. I couldn't help but feel a tad jealous for all the attention you received at the club I visited yesterday, whether it was from men or women, I guess I shall to adopt the Bridgerton blue to attract more attention" he joked, a playful glint dancing in his eyes as he elicited chuckles from the Bridgerton brothers, who felt themselves relax at the bass playful attitude.Charles turned to the only Bridgerton female before him, his heart skipping a beat as his gaze fell upon her. She was a vision of magnificence, her delicate features accentuated by large, innocent blue eyes that seemed to captivate him instantly."Your grace," she greeted him with an angelic voice, executing a graceful curtsy before him."Miss Bridgerton," Charles replied, his words drawn out slowly in his raspy, deep voice. His dark brown eyes locked onto her blue ones, a magnetic connection sparking between them as he gently took her gloved hand and pressed a reverent kiss to the back of it.Likewise, the Bridgerton brothers, from youngest to eldest, greeted Miss Waldorf warmly, she offered a charming smile in return. As Anthony approached her, he felt as though time itself had slowed, his gaze locking with hers, drawn to her foxy and mischievous brown eyes."Miss Waldorf, it's an honor to make your acquaintance," Anthony said with his characteristic charm, his smile reaching his eyes as he bent to kiss the back of her hand. However, he couldn't help but notice a shift in her demeanor as his lips touched her glove. Her charming smile faltered, replaced by a more polite expression that did not quite reach her eyes, leaving Anthony puzzled by the sudden change in her demeanor."Likewise, Lord Bridgerton," Blair replied politely, though her demeanor cooled slightly when Anthony hesitated to release her hand. Sensing her discomfort, Anthony was about to let go but Blair swiftly withdrew her hand, a flicker of distaste crossing her features as she recalled the scene she had witnessed the day before with his mistress beneath a tree. Anthony's gut dropped at the sight of the slight look of disdain on Miss Waldorf's face as she glanced at him, though it was quickly replaced by a more genuine smile as she turned her attention to greet Daphne. Her swift change in expression left Anthony feeling unsettled, has he done something or did she find him repulsing. Admittedly it would be the first woman he would cross that have this opinion, adding to that a woman he was attracted to.Meanwhile, Blair's demeanor softened at the sight of Daphne, who’s large, Bambi-like eyes that were filled with admiration gazed at her. The genuine, large smile directed her way melted away any lingering traces of distaste that may have been generated because of that goddamn author. In that moment, any reservations Blair may have harbored dissipated as she returned Daphne's smile with one of her own, genuine and welcoming.“You must be miss Daphne Bridgerton.” Blair inquired as she approached her under the wary gaze of her brother, who knew her for her ruthlessness when she wanted toward competition.“It is quite right miss right. It’s a pleasure to make your acquittance, miss Waldorf.” Daphne curtsied in respect."Likewise, please call me Blair. I must say, I really like your dress. It suits you well," Blair remarked with genuine admiration, her smile warm and inviting as she extended the olive branch of friendship, she really did not know why but she felt a connection and kinship to Daphne.Daphne's genuine smile widened at the compliment. "Thank you, Blair! And please, feel free to call me by my name as well," she replied warmly. "I truly admire the integrity of your outfits, from your dress to your jewelry. The design is refreshingly modern and not something we're accustomed to seeing here in London. Could you perhaps recommend me to your modiste?"Blair light up at the reference of her design, was about to answer but was surpassed by her own brother.“The dress was designed and made by Blair herself, miss Bridgerton; when going to important event, my little sister loves putting her own creations” Charles said to daphne staring at her intensely making shivers run down daphne’s back as a soft blush appeared on her cheeks.Blair was about to give her minds to her brother for interrupting her when she noticed the connection between the two who stared intensely at each other.“That’s impressive miss Waldorf, I’m sure that your mother is quite proud of you.” Lady Danbury commented making Blair turn toward her and the Bridgerton brothers who agreed with nods.Blair suppressed a grimace at the name of her mother, Charles sensing that replied smoothly but sarcastically.“Oh yes, mother dearest is proud of her progeniture;” He states bitterly.Blair brushed off the subject and turned back to Daphne."You should come to our home the day after tomorrow to see the collection of dresses that I've made," Blair suggested warmly, her eyes alight with excitement at the idea of talking clothes with a girl who was as interested as her in fashion."And that she was able to bring with her in a luggage," Charles interjected mockingly, earning himself a hit on the arm from Blair, who didn't even spare him a glance. "Such violence," he muttered while wincing, eliciting snickers and giggles from those around them at the siblings' banter. "You could choose which style you would like more, and I'll be able to make you a dress after taking your measurements," Blair offered with warm smile that made her adorable dimples and high cheekbones stand out, something that Anthony couldn’t help but register in his mind.Daphne's eyes widened in surprise at the generous offer before she reached out to grasp Blair's hands in hers, overflowing with gratitude. "Thank you so much, Blair. That is incredibly generous of you," she said earnestly, feeling touched by the genuine kindness extended to her.Lady Danbury however interrupted them.“Duke Bass, miss Waldorf, let me now take you around the room and introduce you. It’s been a while since you set a foot in England after all. We must refresh your memories.” Lady Danburry offered.“Sure,” Blair replied to her before turning to the siblings “it was a pleasure to make your acquaintance” as she curtsied slightly as she waved to daphne who curtsied and waved who as well was not used to having friends her age.The men bowed their heads in goodbyes before the pair of siblings left the group with lady Danbury.“That went quite well!” Collin cheered ever the optimist.“The duke is very funny despite his workload and responsibility and miss Blair, in addition of being a beauty is very witty and charming.” Benedict stated the obvious. The only siblings who did not contribute to the discussion were Anthony and Daphne who stared at Blair and Charles respectively with a slight wistful look.Benedict and Collin noticed soon after and shared a raised brow at that.
It seemed that this season was going to be more interesting than they had initially anticipated.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
That next day’s golden morning light bathes the Bridgerton’s’ beautiful home..Daphne is wide awake in her bed, reminiscing the the ball of last night while staring at the ceiling. Her meeting with the duke Bass still fresh in her mind, She could still feel the electric tingle that coursed through her veins as his penetrating gaze locked with hers, and the gentle caress of his lips upon the back of her hand. The memory of his broad, comforting hands enveloping hers, and the heady fragrance that enveloped him, stirred within her like a symphony of sensations. And oh, the resonance of his deep baritone voice, echoing through her heart that beats irregularly at the memory. She put a hand on her chest to try to calm it before a sinking feeling engulfed her as she remembers the words that lady Danbury’s uttered. Duke bass was not looking for a love match but an advantageous marriage of convenience thus explaining his impending betrothal to an American heiress. Her heart ached at the thought of it. She shook her head, He was the first man she felt attracted to, this was going to pass when she will find her perfect match, today is the beginning after all. She thought with determination as she exited her bed when her maid rose entered the room.“Miss? You have already awakened” said maid asked surprised“Have cook prepare as many biscuits as he can this morning. And perhaps we might move a few extra chairs into the drawing room, too. Oh I do wonder... Which gentlemen will be the very first to call. I have so much to ask of them all. » Daphne asked cheerfully.“Well, let us get you dressed” rose smiled as she helped the eldest Bridgerton sister dress herself.Daphne let rose prepare her, yet deep, beneath her facade of resolve, a flicker of uncertainty lingered. Two hours later, Daphne embroiders with her mother and sisters in their exquisitely appointed drawing room. No one's talking. Until the door suddenly opens. Daphne tosses her hoop to the side. Smoothes her dress and looks up, hopeful that it’s a pretendent, but it's just—“Anthony, I did not expect to see you here this morning.” Daphne exclaimed surprised, not at all happy with his presence.“It is terribly early for you, dearest” violet commented to her eldest son.“I could not sleep for some reason. All the excitement, I presume.” He stated as he took a seatnext to daphne who eyes him skeptically, when he noticed the situation, he commented “Am I the first gentleman to arrive? How wonderful”The day passed in the blink of an eye as the drawing room of the Bridgerton’s which had already very few suitors, was emptied following Anthony practically chasing them all off.
It seems the purported diamond of 1813 requires a closer inspection... For this precious stone appears to possess a rather glaring imperfection. And an even rarer jewel -- of only the most remarkable brilliance, fire and luster -- has been unearthed who will fit more the role of competition for the jewel of the crown. Her name, unknown to most, yet soon known to all, is Miss Marina Thompson... This author is left to wonder whether Her Majesty might reconsider the high praise she once afforded Miss Bridgerton. For we all must know what the Queen despises more than anything: being wrong. And the drawing room at Bridgerton House currently appears to be emptier than the muddled head of her dearest King George.
Indeed, while Her Majesty may find solace in the accuracy of one prediction – that of Miss Blair Waldorf reigning as the true jewel of the Crown – the splendor of yesterday's ball served to affirm this declaration with resplendent clarity. Miss Waldorf captivated all in attendance with her unparalleled beauty, quick wit, and irresistible charm.
Her drawing room became the epicenter of society's gaze, drawing not only the elite of London but also nobles from far-flung provinces, all eager to pay homage to this extraordinary beauty. The throngs of titled admirers who gathered at her feet served as a testament to her unrivaled allure and magnetism. Truly, Miss Blair Waldorf's luminance shines brighter than any gem in the Queen's treasury, securing her place as the jewel of the Crown.
A stoic Daphne reads Whistledown as Maid Rose unties her corset from behind, revealing indents on Daphne's skin where the boning has left impressions. A few blisters visible, too. Violet reads her own paper nearby.Seated gracefully amidst the opulent surroundings of her parlor, Blair reads her own paper as she takes a sip of her iced beverage, relaxing after the rather busy day while a part is high from the high praises and flattery another part of her feels bad for Daphne, it seems like her overbearing and hypocrite brother did manage to drive her suitors away.she noticed yesterday in the ballroom, how the viscount did not even allow his sister one dance with any suitor and how her dance card was empty because of it.If only the ton possessed even a modicum of intelligence, they would surely recognize the injustice inflicted upon her. Yet, surrounded as she was by a sea of imbeciles, Blair could only deduce that the ton viewed Daphne as undeserving of their attention. She decided to take the matters on her own hands, she will travel to the Bridgerton’s tomorrow afternoon to lift the poor girl’s spirit and to scheme a plan to make her shine again and get rid of her overbearing brother.
The next day’s afternoon
in the Bridgerton’s drawing room, Anthony shows an anxious suitor to the door and then turns around, exasperated.“ Is a suitor in possession of a proper gentleman's education simply too much to ask?” Anthony as the women in the room, in other words his sisters and mother.“It is astounding. » Violet pointed« It is inconcevable » daphne forced out.« Well, I must be off to my club then. Sisters. Mother » Anthony bid farewell and was about to head out when the footman appeared.“What is it hambolt ? another suitor ?” Anthony asked with a raised brow while his mother and sisters sat up slightly.“No, sir, miss Waldorf is here to see miss Bridgerton.” The footman announced while daphne smiled widely at the presence of the woman with who she exchanged pleasantly two days ago. While Anthony’s heart skipped a beat at the news.“Let her in.” he ordered as he sat down the footman who bowed.Violet raised a brow interested “ did you not say that you were going to the club ?” she asked her son.Anthony cleared his throat “ the least I can do is to greet our guest beforehand;” he said avoiding his mother searching look.“Miss Waldorf.” The footman announced before Blair made her appearance. At the threshold of the drawing room, she stood, a vision of unparalleled loveliness, resplendent in an exquisite white day dress adorned with delicate floral motifs that gave her an air of innocence. Her lustrous, mid-length hair cascaded in perfect waves, meticulously coifed into a rare and pristine arrangement that set her apart from the throngs of London society, in which normally if anyone daring to replicate her meticulously coiffed hairstyle would undoubtedly be met with scandalous whispers and raised eyebrows. Adorned with a coordinating headband and heels that echoed with each graceful step, she exuded an aura of refined sophistication. Her makeup, though understated, added a touch of enchantment to her already radiant visage. A subtle blush imparted a rosy glow to her cheeks, while her lips boasted a hue as delicate as the petals of a rose. Her complexion, flawless and luminous, bore no trace of imperfection, radiating with an inner glow that captivated all who beheld her.Indeed, she appeared as though plucked from the pages of a fairy tale, a living embodiment of beauty and grace, she looked like a porcelain doll brought to life.Blair had a charming smile with pearly white teeth when she stepped into the room as she curtsied slightly to violet who appeared quiet enthralled “Lady Bridgerton.”Violet stood up from her seat to welcome her “Miss Waldorf, welcome indeed. It is a pleasure to finally make your acquaintance.” Violet stated with a warm and motherly smile. “I've heard nothing but praise for you from my children” she continued, her smile widening when Blair’s smiled widened before giggled."I am relieved to hear that," Blair quipped with a playful smile, punctuating her words with a theatrical sigh of mock relief “I’m also Happy to know they did not call me a wicked witch after witnessing my banter with my brother”. Her jest elicited laughter from the assembled women, casting a much lighter-hearted atmosphere upon the room.Anthony, observing Blair's playful banter with amusement, couldn't help but smile genuinely at her lighthearted demeanor. Seeing how she was able to lift his family’s mood in a mere minute, his appreciation for her playful spirit only grew stronger. As Blair's gaze fell upon Anthony, a subtle shift occurred in her demeanor. The playful sparkle that had animated her features moments before seemed to dim slightly, replaced by a polite but forced smile of cordiality.Anthony couldn't help but feel a pang of discomfort at the unmistakable coolness in her demeanor, a stark contrast to the warmth she had exhibited with the others. Though he attempted to mask his internal wince, he couldn't shake the feeling of being met with a blatant distaste at his presence, leaving him unsettled in her midst. She curtsied slightly as she acknowledged him her eyes staring into his “ Viscount Bridgerton”“Miss Waldorf, it’s a pleasure to have you in our home.” Anthony stated as he bowed slightly to her.“Thank you, my lord.” That was her curt response before turning to the other Bridgerton daughters.Violet rushed to introduce them to her “"Since you already know Daphne," Violet began, gesturing towards Blair, who offered a warm smile in return to Daphne's bright expression. «Let me introduce my other daughters to you”.“This is Eloise. my second oldest daughter” she pointed to beautiful brown haired and blue eyes girl who had the same age as her, who was holding one of her favorite book that just was published the year earlier."And here we have Francesca," Violet said, turning her attention to the sweet-natured teenager who greeted Blair with a gentle smile.Lastly, Violet directed Blair's gaze towards the youngest of her daughters, Hyacinth, who regarded Blair with wide-eyed wonder and innocence. “You have very beautiful children lady Bridgerton, you must be proud. I l also ove how orderly you have been in naming them alphabetically, quite original if I say so myself.”Blair's thoughtful compliment drew a genuine smile from Violet, who nodded graciously in acknowledgment. "Thank you, Miss Waldorf. I am indeed proud of my children," she replied warmly. "And as for their names, well, I must admit that there was a certain logic to arranging them alphabetically. It certainly makes for an orderly household," she added with a light chuckle, her affection for her children quite evident in her tone.“You can take a seat miss Waldorf.” Violet invited the girl to take a seat who complied.“Thank you lady Bridgerton, before explaining the reason behind my visit. Let me hand you some of my favorite pastries made by one of our chefs back home since I did not want to come bare handed.” Blair started as she called out softly ‘Dorota.’A middle aged maid who bowed at them and entered with a tray with different delicious looking pastries making the girl’s mouth as well as secretly Anthony’s water.“Miss Blair, you shouldn’t have bothered yourself.” Violet stated more charmed than before by the girl while she stared at the load of pastries presented to them."It's truly no trouble at all. Jean-Louis, our esteemed French chef, has been with us since childhood. He's particularly renowned for his expertise in crafting delectable sweets. My personal favorite is his 'mousse au chocolat,' a Swiss specialty that simply melts in your mouth. And let's not forget his refreshing, fruit-filled cold smoothies – an absolute delight, I simply wanted to share it with you." Blair explained with a hint of pride. With practiced expertise, Dorota then proceeded to serve each guest a plate adorned with a variety of delectable treats, accompanied by a generous dollop of Jean-Louis' famed mousse au chocolat. Completing the ensemble, she graciously offered glasses of the freshly prepared smoothies, inviting her guests to indulge in the tantalizing flavors. As the heavenly flavors tantalized their taste buds, Eloise and Hyacinth couldn't help but emit soft groans of sheer delight, their expressions betraying the utter bliss they experienced. Meanwhile, the rest of the guests maintained a composed facade, yet their eyes sparkled with shared satisfaction, silently acknowledging the exquisite taste that enveloped their senses."It truly is a delight, Blair," Daphne exclaimed, her words punctuated by another delectable bite. Violet echoed her daughter's sentiment with genuine enthusiasm. "I wholeheartedly agree, Miss Waldorf. I've never tasted a pastry quite so delicious."Blair responded graciously; her warm smile infused with genuine warmth. "Please, call me by my name, Lady Bridgerton. We are sharing pastries, after all. And considering you even know my favorite sweetness; you've discovered my weakness. In other words, you can drop the formality," she insisted playfully, eliciting a hearty laugh from Violet in agreement.“Only if you call me Violet.” Violet responded warmly."Very well, Violet," Blair continued, her tone earnest as she shared her intentions. "Besides fulfilling my promise to Daphne by bringing some sketches of my designs and taking her measurements for a Waldorf original dress, I've also come to personally extend an invitation to your family."Violet's interest was piqued as Blair revealed her plans. "An invitation, you say?"Blair nodded, her smile warm and inviting. "Yes, indeed. I'm delighted to invite you and your family to the grand opening of our new hotel in the heart of London, 'The Empire.' While we've only extended invitations to close friends and business partners thus far, I've grown fond of your children and now, you, since our meeting. It would bring me great joy to have you join us for this special occasion.” Blair stated as she handed a beautiful envelope to Violette.“The empire you say? the grand building that was under construction for 3 years now?” Anthony asked intrigued making blair look at him before nodding and responding."Yes, 'The Empire' indeed," Blair affirmed, her voice sugary voice tinged with pride. " Like you stated, It has been under construction for three years now, a labor of love and dedication. This project marks our first-ever collaboration, my brother and I. While he oversaw the financing and construction of the magnificent building and its essential infrastructure, I had the privilege of designing it."She paused momentarily, a fond smile gracing her features. "Hence why we chose to name it 'The Empire' – a nod to our respective roles. He, the king of construction, and I, the queen of design, jointly reigning over this grand endeavor."“That’s amazing miss Waldorf!” Eloise cheered expressing the amazement felt in the room at her involvement in such a big project.“Truly remarkable!” daphne expressed in slight awe.The young women stared at her with stars in their eyes as Blair responded “Thank you. I hope you’ll be joining us. Like I said, this is an event that is very dear to us, We plan to commence with a morning brunch followed by a guided tour of select areas within the hotel. Later, we'll be treated to performances by talented artists coming from various corners of the world who I’ve already seen perform beforehand. I've personally overseen every detail of both the event. So hopefully you will not be bored to death.” Blair joked in the end. “Of course we ‘ill attend, won’t we Anthony ?” Violet answered for her family before turning to question the real head of the family, her son, who she found was gazing at miss Waldorf in an intense look.“Of course, mother! ” he affirmed after being snapped out of his thoughts by her voice. “Our whole family will be happy to join you to this happy event, miss Waldorf.” Anthony stated to the young woman who smiled tightly at him.“How wonderful” Blair exclaimed with a smile."Now, onto more pressing matters," Blair announced with a sugary sweet smile, rising gracefully from her seat as Violet nodded in agreement. Taking Daphne's hand in hers, Blair continued, "I'll accompany Daphne to her chamber to take her measurements, and then we'll return to showcase my collection of dresses. We won't be gone long."With a gentle tug, Blair guided Daphne out of the drawing room, leaving behind an air of anticipation as they embarked on their task.
Little did they know that the goal behind isolating daphne was not to measure her but to form a plan to save her from the clutch of the dragon, whose name was Anthony Bridgerton.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
As Blair and Daphne withdrew into the latter's chamber, Anthony resolved to proceed to the club, as he had spoken of an hour prior. "I am truly delighted by your unexpected visit today," exclaimed Daphne with joy, as Blair guided her to position herself before the looking glass, producing a measuring tape. Blair returned a sympathetic smile. "I daresay the past two days must have proven rather tiring, with your brother driving away all potential suitors," she remarked frankly, causing Daphne to gasp in astonishment."You have noticed," Daphne remarked with a sense of relief, grateful that someone had perceived her situation accurately—that it wasn't her lack of desirability, but rather her brother's intimidating presence that deterred potential suitors. "I should think anyone possessing even a modicum of discernment would notice such a circumstance. Yet, it appears London's society, in tandem with Lady Whistle-ass-Down, share a collective deficiency in cerebral faculties," Blair declared matter-of-factly, prompting Daphne to emit an unladylike snort at the amusing moniker she had bestowed upon the chronicler. Quickly regaining her composure, Daphne covered her mouth in embarrassment, cheeks flushing with shame, while Blair couldn't help but giggle at the scene.“Lady whistle-ass-down?” Daphne asked giggling.“Admit it, it is rather fitting.” Blair stated smugly “although the chronic might be a little diverting, its content is just reflecting the ton’s opinion, in a way that it’s state the obvious without digging for the details. Quite unoriginal if you ask me. We had a multitude of such publications in New York," she explained disdainfully as she wrote notes on a paper.“Despite how unoriginal it is, people seem to believe what she says. Soon enough, they might even perceive me as naught but a wallflower," Daphne expressed sadly, causing Blair to raise her eyes from the paper, regarding her with a thoughtful expression.“Which is why I am here right now. We are about to change the thinking of some dumb people.” Blair stated suddenly making daphne turn to look at her surprised.“You are willing to help me? But why is that ?” Daphne asked intrigued and quite puzzled.Blair approached her and touched the marks left by the corset on her “because I’m an overachiever and hardworking myself and I don’t like seeing hard work going to waste, because of an insipid detail. I see that you’ve trained yourself all yourself for this debut and your brother and this lady Whiste-ass-down seems to get in the way.” She explained while putting daphne’s hair on the side and looking at her shoulder’s length.“Those Insipid details like you mentioned are my obstinate brother and an exceedingly influential author whose words seems to weigh more than the queen’s. it’s impossible to get passed them” Daphne replied in a pessimistic tone."Please drop that pathetic and pessimistic expression, Daphne," Blair urged firmly with a scoff "Do you believe that women will ever achieve anything if we allow setbacks to diminish us? You must possess a determination that exceeds all others to attain your aspirations. If there's one lesson I've learned in this life, it's that while life may influence us, We are ultimately the ones who shape it," she declared resolutely, lifting Daphne's chin and guiding her to meet her own gaze in the mirror, making the later’s eyes widen at the aspiring words."Now, my dear, the choice is yours. Will you allow yourself to perpetually play the role of the victim, or will you seize the opportunity to become the heroine of your own story?" Blair asked her as she patted her back.Daphne’s eyes grew determined “ I would like to have a say in my life.” Daphne replied with determination making Blair smile winningly.“That’s what I like to hear.” Blair patted her back with a wide smile making her adorable dimples which was returned by the Bridgerton girl.“How do we proceed?” Daphne asked as she sat on her bed after Blair finished with her task.“We have to take down two enemies in this chess game, the knight and neutralize the queen.” Blair stated with a smirk.“The queen?” Daphne asked confused making Blair to roll her eyes."Figure of speech, my dear, have you never indulged in the intricacies of chess?" Blair posed the question rhetorically with an exasperated sigh, swiftly interrupting Daphne before she could respond."Figure of speech, my dear, have you never indulged in the intricacies of chess?" Blair posed the question rhetorically, swiftly interrupting Daphne before she could respond."But let us not dwell on that now. Our focus must be on eliminating the interference caused by your brother and maneuvering Lady Whistle-Down's influence so that she only sings praises of your future accomplishments." She summarized.“It will be impossible to stop Anthony.” Daphne responded doubtful.“Let me take care of your brother. I know exactly which buttons to push to get rid of him and his meddling ways.” Blair stated with a devilish smile, making daphne stare at her nervously.“As for lady whistle-ass-down, I have the perfect plan.” Blair resumed as she stood up and marched around the room.“Lesson one daphne: do you know what makes a woman truly irresistible to a man, aside from her elegance and beauty” Blair asked the Bridgerton girl who stumbled over her words in search of an answer."Flattery?" Daphne ventured, her confusion and innocence evident, eliciting a giggle from Blair at the girl's naiveté.Seating herself beside Daphne, Blair gently patted her head in feigned sympathy. "You are truly an adorable and naive creature," she remarked, brushing away a mock tear, which elicited a nervous giggle from Daphne, who stared at Blair with genuine confusion."Men are often drawn to what their peers possess, particularly if a man of higher standing than yours shows interest in you. This is sure to catch their attention," Blair explained patiently, as if guiding a child taking their first steps into understanding."How can I possibly capture the attention of such men, especially now that my brother has driven away even second-borns and untitled men, rendering me undesirable to all?" Daphne inquired with a touch of sadness."I know just the man well titled who can adeptly stage a faux courtship with you and isn't in the least bit intimidated by your brother," Blair asserted confidently with a smirk.“Who?” Daphne asked intrigues and hopeful for the plan to work.“My brother.” Blair stated simply making daphne’s heart stutter slightly.“Duke Bass?” Daphne asked shocked."Who else indeed? Certainly not my imaginary brother Romeo, so smitten by Juliet that he meets his tragic demise," Blair retorted sarcastically.“Why would Duke Bass be willing to help me?” daphne asked bewildered.“"Because, not only does he owe me a favor, but he's also eager to shake off the mamas who've been trailing him since his arrival. Expressing interest in you could serve as the perfect distraction” Blair continued her explanation absentmindedly as she adjusted herself in front of the mirror, adding another layer of red to her lips.“He is already planned to marry, is that correct? from another woman who is not part of london’s society.” Daphne asked after a brief silence. Blair lifted her gaze to stare at her from the mirror when she detected a hint of disappointment in her voice.“Where did you hear that?” Blair asked surprised because the news travelled fast making Daphne gasp and cover her lips."Never mind," Blair replied, her focus returning to Daphne. "To answer your question, it's not official yet as Charles hasn't proposed. However, Serena, one of my friends, has been following after him like a lost puppy for years. And considering my brother's plans for a marriage of convenience, I don't think it will be long before he makes a proposal," Blair explained, her expression thoughtful as she paused for a moment."Unless, of course, he manages to fall in love in a short amount of time and allows himself to finally be happy," Blair mused, her words more directed to herself than to Daphne."But a word of advice, Daphne," Blair cautioned, her tone serious. "While I orchestrate this plan, I suggest you guard your heart against falling for him, because he will only break it. Don't allow this staged courtship to become a reality for you, no matter how charming or thoughtful you may find him," Blair advised sagely as she turned to look at Daphne.Daphne hesitated a moment before swallowing and nodding making Blair smile in relief."That's reassuring," Blair replied softly. "I wouldn't want my first friend in a long time to end up heartbroken over my brother, like so many before her," she stated empathetically, to which Daphne smiled at the reference of her being a friend to Blair. But inside she had a small doubt on her remaining of stone in front of the duke.“Why don’t we head downstairs, now? I will show you all the materials and designs I can use to work on your dress.” Blair offered as she linked her arm in hers and led her outside of the bedroom.Once outside they found Dorota outside waiting for them. At Dorota’s discreet Blair smirked internally."Why don't you show me to the powder room? I need to freshen up before joining you downstairs," Blair innocently suggested to Daphne, who smiled and led the way."You can go ahead and join your family. I'll join you once I'm finished," Blair offered graciousl, once they arrived in front of the door of their destination.Daphne hesitated a moment before agreeing.Blair made a theatrical entrance into the powder room, but as soon as she heard a knock, she swiftly exited, finding Dorota outside who discreetly indicated that Daphne was out of sight."Did you find it, Dorota?" Blair inquired, raising an eyebrow."Of course, Miss Blair," Dorota responded dutifully. "The office was downstairs, on the floor beneath the drawing room. It was locked.""And?" Blair prompted impatiently; her eyebrow perfectly arched."I was able to unlock it and find the documents you asked me to find," Dorota stated before glancing around and handing over the documents."I knew you were my favorite servant for a reason, Dorota," Blair beamed, sighing with satisfaction as she flipped through the documents.“Hide it for now. I want to go and get couple copies of these, Vanya would bring you to the nearest printer. Do it quickly, before putting them back into the office, discreetly and locking the door behind you.” Blair ordered her maid who bowed, took the papers and ran out.
Everything was going according to the plan to get rid of the knight.
Afterward, Blair descended the stairs and was surprised to find Francesca, Hyacinth, and Eloise waiting outside the door of the drawing room. She gave them a confused expression. "What are you doing waiting outside?" Blair asked the youngest Bridgerton sisters. Hyacinth responded cheered, "Daphne is being visited by a suitor." Francesca huffed in annoyance at the situation and corrected her sister’s statement "Daphne is being visited by Lord Berbrooke.""And this is depressing news because…?" Blair asked skeptically. "I’m sure you are yet to meet him but the man is an ugly and old toad who has held a bizarre fascination with our sister for years," Eloise responded."He is quite disgusting," agreed the usually kind Francesca.“If the man is so bad why did your sister receive him or the better question, why didn’t you kick him out ?” Blair asked bewildered."We wanted to at least stay with our sister, but Mother thought it would be quite rude, and it might give a bad impression if we kicked out Lord Berbrooke," Francesca explained with a hint of frustration."Ladies, allow me to demonstrate how a woman can gracefully dismiss repugnant men without appearing rude, and simply by driving him away," Blair declared mischievously, with a wink, before she entered the drawing room without bothering to knock.Blair let out a fake gasp as she made a surprised look at the sight of daphne seated beside lord Berbrooke.“oh I apologize lady Bridgerton, miss Bridgerton. I did not know you had a guest.” She stated in a very sweet and innocent way under the watchful eyes of the youngest girls. Violet stood up “Nonsense Blair, you are a guest as well. Ans like I told you call me Violet.”"Why don't you take a seat?" Violet, being the perfect hostess, proposed."Sure, although we have not been introduced, sir," Blair asked with a raised eyebrow, addressing the unsightly Lord Berbrooke, who was munching on his cookie like a disgusting pig and eyeing her with unwelcome lust."Lord Berbrooke, my lady," he announced, attempting to stand up to kiss the palm of her hand, but Blair stopped him."A pleasure, I'm sure," she stated with a slight grimace. "Do not bother yourself; you seem so... comfortable seated there," she finished, opting not to say, "far from me."
"Like I would ever let that disgusting bastard touch me with his herpes-infected lips," Blair thought with disgust. "Lord knows how much he must pay girls hefty sums just for them to approach him. There must be a minimum wage for the poor girls," she mused, appalled by the situation.
"Have you tasted the chocolate mousse I brought, sir?" Blair offered sweetly, holding out a plate filled with it, to which he eagerly accepted, much to the confusion of Violet and Daphne. Blair then casually moved behind him to serve herself a cup of tea, engaging in small talk with Violet as she pretended not to see where she was going. With a subtle movement, she maneuvered herself into position before knocking her elbow against his head, causing his face to collide with the plate of chocolate mousse. The youngest Bridgerton daughters burst into laughter by the open door, while Violet scolded them softly, trying to suppress her own laughter. "Oh, I'm terribly sorry! How clumsy of me!" Blair exclaimed with faux concern as she quickly turned around, “accidentally” knocking her cup of hot tea onto his head, causing him to scream in pain. This time, even Daphne couldn't help but giggle as she asked, "Are you alright, Lord Berbrooke?""Yes, Miss Bridgerton," Lord Berbrooke replied through gritted teeth."I'm truly sorry, Lord Berbrooke. I don't understand why I'm so clumsy today," Blair stated, feigning innocence as she took a heavy napkin and throwing it forcefully on his head, causing his wig to fall off, further humiliating him.She then paused, holding his wig with a sugary sweet smile and a devilish look that made him swallow nervously. "Lord Berbrooke, you dropped this," Blair stated, her tone saccharine as she handed him his wig.Violet couldn't help but hide her face to chuckle at the comic sight.“Thank you miss Waldorf.” Lord berbrooke stated red faced."If you'll excuse me, Miss Bridgerton, Lady Bridgerton, I must take my leave," Lord Berbrooke stated, bowing hastily and not waiting for a response before fleeing like a thief. At his departure, all the women burst into laughter."You, Blair Waldorf, are now my most favorite person," Eloise declared, with Francesca and Hyacinth chuckling as they entered the room."No, she is mine!" Francesca countered, approaching Blair."Did you all learn the trick now?" Blair asked the girls, who giggled and nodded in response."It's quite an efficient and funny trick," Eloise remarked humorously."What trick?" Lady Bridgerton asked, raising an eyebrow."Nothing of importance, Violet," Blair deflected, changing the subject."Why don't I show you my designs of the dresses now?" Blair suggested, sitting beside Daphne, who took her hand and squeezed it."Thank you, Blair!" Daphne whispered, relief evident in her tone."My pleasure," Blair responded. "Did you see how his wig fell off?" Blair joked, making Daphne giggle in agreement, with Blair following behind, both of them amused by the memory. The afternoon was filled with laughter and giggles. However, upon Dorota's arrival, Blair found herself needing to excuse herself to prepare for the opera. It was there that her plan to rid herself of Anthony would be set in motion, now that all the necessary elements were in place.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Blazing chandeliers float above the jam-packed, noisy audience as Siena performs Gluck's "Iphigénie en Tauride." Anthony, accompagnied by his brothers, stands amongst a group of conversing men,in the gallery. Every now and then, he meets eyes with Siena, up on stage. And as one of those looks between the two of them lingers—A society man ask Anthony a question making him snap out of his staring contest with sienna.“Do you know her, Bridgerton?” He was asked which catches Anthony off guard. It’s catches Anthony off guard.“Yes, Pray tell, are you acquainted with the lady, lord Bridgerton?” a melodious female was heard as the highly esteemed miss Blair Waldorf made her appearance accompanied by her none other than his grace the duke Bass. The males stared at her beauty in transfixed, Miss Waldorf's figure was enveloped in a resplendent crimson gown, its hue as bold as the beating of a passionate heart, cinched snugly at her slender waist, accentuating the delicate contours of her form. Her luxuriant locks, coaxed into a cascade of curls, were artfully arranged in a half updo which was swept to the side, with a scarlet blossom adorning its side. A few errant tendrils danced provocatively around her countenance, framing her pouting, luscious and glossy lips with a tantalizing allure.“Miss Waldorf, your grace.” The gentlemen greeted with bows at the presence of such prolific individuals.“Gentlemen. Bridgertons” Blair greeted back with a charming smile, while Charles only nodded in greetings, an amused smirk forever stuck on his face."Lord Bridgerton," Miss Waldorf pressed on with a raise of a single, exquisitely arched eyebrow, "you have yet to offer your thoughts on the opera singer. Do you harbor an opinion regarding her?" Her inquiry hung in the air, suffused with an aura of curiosity, fake if the author can say so herself.“ The singer? I can not give a thought for I never saw her beforehand. ” Anthony play it off making Blair smirk internally. “Really? What a surprise?” Blair inquired in fake surprise, making Anthony stare at her intensely.“I seem to remember catching you at one of her representation.” Blair stated innocently with a thoughtful expression.“Really ? I do not seem to remember.” Anthony shrugged nonchalantly while benedict stared at him intensely.“Are you certain? I am sure I’ve noticed you, even my brother could attest. It was the play where this lead actress was on a tree by the forest infront of a carriage but was stabbed repeatedly by the villain, I remember because the thrusts of the sword were quite bloody savage and frantic if I can say so myself but……how do I put it in words…. quite pathetic.” Blair stated with a sweet sugary tone while her eyes held a devilishness making benedict choke on his drink as Anthony stared at her jaw-slack in astonishment as the duke burst into laughter at his sister's blunt but hilarious words. “Miss Waldorf” Anthony almost stumbled while muttering her name.“Strange, I have not watched this play. What is it named ?” one of the gentleman asked interested making the two eldest Bridgerton brothers sweat.“It was an exclusive play gentlemen, only exclusive opera worshippers, like lord Bridgerton here and i, graced the audience that evening.” Surprisingly it was Blair herself who saved him from humiliation, while benedict snorted at the double meaning of ‘opera worshipper’“well, I did not know that Bridgerton was such a fan of opera.” One gentleman stated amused.“To each their guilty pleasure gentlemen.” Blair stated sympatically."Now, if you would be so kind as to excuse us," Blair smoothly addressed the gentlemen, her words dripping with sweet honey while carrying a subtle undercurrent of disdain aimed squarely at Anthony, "Lord Bridgerton and I must take our leave to discuss the lamentable piece we were privileged, or perhaps cursed, to witness." Her apology masked a delicate insult, leaving Anthony momentarily flagger bagged, at the duality he was able to witness of miss Waldorf, an outward demeanor of sugared charm concealing the razor edge of her inner cunning. It was a revelation that left him stunned and thirsting to know more deep inside, but for now anger burned brighter within Anthony than any other sentiment, stoked by the audacity of Miss Waldorf's attempt to publicly humiliate him.Internally, Benedict was dying of laughter, his suppressed chuckles threatening to spill over as he leaned in to explain to Colin, who, upon grasping the situation, found himself unable to stifle his own amusement, succumbing to his own fit of chucklesBlair leaned against Anthony and put her arms around his elbows as she gently led him across the room, for a few moments he was to be stunned by what happened but also at the smell of her dazzling perfume the engulfed her entire being and thus him since he was near her.“What was that miss waldorf ?” Anthony hissed angrily through gritted teeths."Admit it, Lord Bridgerton," Blair declared with a mischievous glint dancing in her eyes, "it was rather amusing." Her lips curved into a playful smile, a soft giggle escaping her as she observed Anthony's reaction. "Well, at least for me," she added with a teasing lilt, "watching you squirm like a little boy caught with his hand in the cookie jar." Her laughter bubbled forth, a melodic sound that echoed through the room. How can she be so charming and cunning at the same time, Anthony thought bewildered internally.“miss Waldorf, I will not admit the same behavior in the future. If this type of action is repeated. I will be forced to-“He threatened angrily.“To what, Bridgerton ?” Blair asked while raising a challenging eyebrow unimpressed and dropping all formality and politeness.“Report to my brother? go ahead, he already had a front seat of you thrusting into your mistress in the middle of the forest, like a savage, didn’t they teach you how to use a bed? ” Blair asked in a challenging way but a sweet sugary smile was plastered in her face as she fixed his cuffs, pretending to be the perfect debutante for all other to see, who could not listen to their conversion. “Miss Waldorf!” Anthony exclaimed flaggerbagged and scandalized “this is not the talk of a lady!” he exclaimed.“Oh, you mean the talk concerning s-e-x?” Blair asked in a fake scandalized whisper before she giggled."Miss Waldorf!" Anthony's voice carried a note of incredulity, unused to such bold discourse with a lady. His brows furrowed slightly, a hint of disapproval flickering across his features."Do calm yourself, Bridgerton," Blair retorted, her tone tinged with playful irreverence. "You're wound tighter than a corset at a royal ball. And as for your mistress," she continued, her words laced with a provocative edge, "I trust she's earning her keep with the substantial sum you bestow upon her?" Her teasing remark hung in the air, daring Anthony to respond as she led him into a more secluded corner of the room where not many people can see them but still not selected enough to cause a scandal.“What do you mean?” he asked confused.Blair took some papers for her pouch and began to list as she flipped through them “ let me summarise, you generously cover her lodging, her wardrobe expenses—though I must confess, the exorbitant cost seems unjustified for the ghastly ensembles she favors, ones that could bring tears to even the most stoic of eyes—and let us not forget the lavish gifts bestowed upon her over the course of three years.? Is that quite right? ” Blair explained before asking a shocked viscount, not receiving a response she continued “who could have known you possessed such a tender, nurturing side?” Her words, infused with playful sarcasm, teased in dramatic dreamy sigh while putting a hand on her chest.“How did you come across this ?” Anthony demanded as he Took the papers from her hand."A fairy lady bestowed it upon her, naturally," Blair quipped with a roll of her eyes, her sarcasm palpable. "How else, pray tell, would such sensible information landed on my hands? Are you deliberately being obtuse, Bridgerton?" Her words dripped with incredulity,“you found them in my office. That’s why you came home earlier.” Anthony realised"Ding ding, we have a winner," Blair exclaimed with a triumphant grin, her adorable dimpled smile contradicting the cunningness that lay beneath. "I knew there was still a spark of intelligence flickering in that mind of yours," she teased, her tone playful yet edged with a hint of satisfaction.“Didn’t you ever learn to never leave anything valuable unattended?” Blair asked in a disappointed manner “oh! And before you start to believe you hold my only leverage, think again. Those documents are but mere copies, i took the liberty of making many of those" she revealed smugly with a sly smile, enjoying the shift in Anthony's demeanor. "You're welcome to keep them if you wish. Perhaps they'll come in handy for kindling a fire, or better yet, to set aflame your mistress's atrocious wardrobe," she suggested with a wicked glint in her eye.“What is it that you want?” Anthony asked through gritted teeth."Already?" Blair queried with an adorable pout; her disappointment genuine as the amusement was cut short. "You haven't even allowed me the pleasure of detailing how I also possess your love letters, or contemplating the various ways in which I could disseminate such scandalous news. Imagine, not only society but also your dear sisters discovering the depths of your debauchery along with your hypocrisy " she mused, a mischievous glint dancing in her eyes despite her feigned dismay.“Out with it!” Anthony ordered with fury in his eyes making Blair simply roll her eyes.“Fine!” Blair relented to uncover his request “ I want you to cease your interference in Daphne’s courting or marital decisions from now on.” Blair demanded, making Anthony look at her in bewilderment."Do spare me your feigned surprise," Blair retorted, her tone tinged with sarcasm as she congratulated him with a mockingly applause. "I must say, you've achieved the impossible—ruining a diamond's chance at a promising match while somehow managing to keeping her respectful reputation intact. Quite the feat, I must admit," she remarked dryly, her words laced with biting criticism. "Is there any other endeavor in which you excel at destructing all that you touch? Apart from, of course, the unfortunate incident with the poor tree I witnessed that day, or the assault on my senses with your presence," she added, her sarcasm cutting through the air like a sharpened blade.Instead of answering the hurtful question, he asked her instead.“All this scheming to stop me from interfering into my sister's matches ?” he asked in disbelief.“You are quite headstrong and dumb as a bull from what daphne told me and from what I observed. I plan right now to salvage what you managed to detroy, so I warn you do not get in my way or your not-so-secret affair will be exposed, as well as your exploits in using those hips of yours.” Blair warned threateningly, to Anthony who only stared at her transfixed.
Is it logical of him to find her threatening and scowl adorable and of wanting to kiss her senselessly, to taste her juicy looking lips and to immerse himself completely into her. he must be losing his mind, he thought to himself
“if you maintain your end of the bargain until daphne manage to get herself married or at least engaged than I’ll burn myself those documents in front of you to demonstrate my good faith” Blair proposed tone firm “are we clear?” she then asked with a lifted eyebrow making him nod to which Blair smiled sweetly satisfied."It's been... enlightening to conduct business with you, Bridgerton," Blair remarked with a soft pat on his chest, her touch feather-light «I shall leave you to your own devices now, to indulge in daydreams of your mistress while she performs her... somewhat adequate play," she concluded with a smirk, before turning on her heel and leaving Anthony to stare after her hypnotized.‘What a woman’ he thought.During the play, he did not stare at sienna’s direction at all nor did he return her questioning gaze, contrary to Blair's beliefs. He kept glancing at the bass’s box, completely immersed into the different expression displayed on miss Waldorf’s face during the performance. He could not help but think on her soft touches, exquisite smiles and harsh but very witty words.Blair's multifaceted nature left an indelible imprint on Anthony's mind, haunting him to the extent that he found himself unable to join his mistress for the first time in ages. As he drifted into the realm of sleep, her presence lingered like a tantalizing whisper, weaving through his thoughts. The last thing that danced before his mind was of her intoxicating scent, a fragrance he tried in vain to replicate by burying his face in his pillow, hoping to capture even a hint of the allure that had ensnared him so completely.
