Flowers for You Flowers

Work Text

Aizawa Shouta had never received flowers before in his life.

He hadn’t even spared a thought to this fact before. Hadn’t thought of, or daydreamed about being on the receiving end of such a romantic gesture or anything of a similar nature. Didn’t recognize the quiet yearning for what it was, until today. Everyone knew that men were the flower givers, not receivers. So he thought up scenarios and gifts and gestures on how to

give

affection, attention, time, love, without thinking about receiving the same. He had honestly given up on finding love, his logical, honest, and blunt personality as well as his career driving most potential partners away. Which is why he is so stunned at the sight of his problem child holding out a delicate bouquet of Sakura blossoms and pink and blue forget-me-nots.

Izuku’s smile dims the longer he stands there staring at the bouquet, and, embarrassingly enough, is what gets him to snap out of his stupor and take the flowers from his problem child.

“I’ve never been given flowers before.” Is the only thing that comes out of his mouth. The only thought he can coherently share in any capacity. Izuku’s hand that was holding the flowers out goes up to rub at the back of his neck as he laughs sheepishly.

“I know you’re not a fan of sweets, and I wasn’t sure how you’d react to a stuffie, so I went with the basic first date gift. Plus, in all my research I found that the asker is generally the one to gift first--” Izuku continues to ramble nervously but Shouta is stuck on--

“Date?”

Izuku falters.

“Yeah, our date today, to see the new noir detective movie and then the cat cafe after to make fun of the movie and cuddle with the cats.” Izuku replies hesitantly, and indeed those are the plans they made for today but…

“Date.” Shouta repeats, short-circuiting again. “I was wondering why you were so nervous asking to do something we’ve done before.”

“I- you, you didn’t know-” Izuku stutters out, before laughing nervously, “I think I’m going to go-” He starts to turn and leave but Shouta lashes out with his capture scarf, wrapping it securely around Izuku’s torso and pulling him back into the kitchen, then depositing him in a dining room chair.

“Stay.” He commands, and Izuku lets out a little squeak and nods his head rapidly.

“Stay-staying, Sensei!” He replies and then blanches. “I-I mean, Aizawa-san! Hah, you’re not my Sensei anymore, you haven’t been my sensei for years! It’s just habit when you use that tone, but I--”

“Hush, please.” Shouta interrupts his nervous ramble again. Izuku’s mouth clicks shut and silence reigns in the house. Shouta takes a deep breath and lets it out, slowly. He then turns and puts the bouquet on the counter, going through his cabinets to find a glass big enough to hold them. Eventually he gives up and puts them in his spare coffee pot, turning and placing the pot and bouquet onto the dining table. He sits down facing Izuku and studies him for a moment. His problem child is nervous, leg jiggling and eyes flitting around the room at everything but Shouta himself.

“I didn’t realize you meant for today to be a date.” He starts, which makes Izuku flinch. “But, I also would like for today to be a date. I would have liked every other outing we’ve had together, every day off spent together, to have been a date.” He confesses and Izuku’s eyes snap to him, surprise and shock on his face.

“You-- really?” He breathes out, fragile and hopeful. Shouta nods.

“Yeah, Izuku, really. I’ve had feelings for you for a long time, but I was never going to say or do anything, because I think you could do better than me. I think you deserve better than me.” Izuku looks indignant and opens his mouth, likely to spill compliments and arguments on why Shouta is and would make a good partner, but Shouta holds up his hand, stopping him. “I don’t want to argue about my insecurities right now. I want to be selfish and go out on a date with you anyway. I want you to be my boyfriend, to be mine for as long as you’ll have me.”

“Forever! I want you to be mine forever.” Izuku blurts, frantic and over joyed. Shouta huffs out a laugh.

“We haven’t even been on a first date and you’re already dropping forever? I don’t know Izuku, that’s kind of fast.” Shouta teases him, making Izuku pout and whine.

“We’ve known each other for almost a decade, Shouta! And I’ve been living with you part time since the dorms and we help each other with work and Eri and we are really good friends who talk through their problems or needs and I don’t think it’s fast at all to know I want you in my life for the rest of it!” He declares, passion making his voice louder and louder until he’s almost yelling at the end. Shouta sits there, a little surprised and very much in love, observing Izuku as he regains his breath but doesn’t lose his determined look.

“Okay Izuku, forever it is.” He promises, a soft and fond smile on his face. Izuku’s resulting smile is blinding.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A week later, Izuku enters the house with a bouquet of red roses for Shouta and a bouquet of yellow sunflowers and orange calendula flowers for Eri. They would be sitting her down after she gets home from school and telling her about their relationship.

“I’m home!” Izuku calls into the house, changing into his house slippers.

“In the kitchen.” Shouta yells back. Izuku bounces into the house hiding the roses behind his back.

“I’ve got something for you!” They say at the same time. They pause and then laugh.

“You go first Shouta!” Izuku says, happy and fond. And Shouta pulls out a beautiful vase of red roses and baby’s breath. Izuku gapes.

“I know red roses are basic and maybe over done but-” Shouta starts, self deprecating, but Izuku will not let that stand and interrupts by shoving his own bouquet of red roses into Shouta’s face.

“I got you red roses too!” They stop and stare at each other before bursting into laughter again. They set the flowers down and pull each other in, nuzzling and kissing each other as much as they can while laughing.

Their home is never flowerless again.
